The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet which features original artwork by Islandbased artist Catherine James. The Manx winters can be bleak, wet and cold and, on many occasions, “Manannan’s mantle of mist” makes it difficult to see further than the bottom of the garden. Yet, to awaken on a winter’s morning to windows limned with frost patterns (before central heating) is to enter another dimension, a magical transformation, a silvering of hoar frost-edged leaves. Rusty bracken, teasels and sea holly become gems to rival a jeweller’s window, all against a backdrop of winter lace trees, while the glowing colours of rose hips in the hedges entice hungry birds. Bright red holly berries with shining spiked leaves and ivy bowers bearing beautifully aligned fruits - in colours that range from green/ orange to purple/black throughout the winter months - provide food for blackbirds and other members of the thrush family. These bowers also give essential shelter to many creatures on the cold and frosty nights. Then, the extra privilege of discovering, in a hedge of brambles, an old birds’ nest filled with a colourful array of berries, nuts and seeds, to form the jewelled larder of a field mouse. 4
All of these images came to mind when I was asked to design Winter Flora stamps for the Isle of Man Post Office. This also gave me the need to look in greater detail at the hellebores, now far removed from the original green hellebore, the wild relative of the Christmas rose, yet still retaining - for me - a primeval aspect, despite the amazing colours and patterns. What a designer is nature! Yes, a Manx winter can be cold and dark. It can also be incredibly beautiful. I hope the Winter Flora stamps give some indication of this other aspect of winter on our Island. Watch our interview with Catherine James now! /IOMstampsandcoins
Winter Flora has a luxurious aspect that you don’t get in the other seasons because you get these deep purples, deep greens and rusts and compared with the greyness of winter it makes them look more luxurious. The team at Isle of Man Stamps & Coins have captured that aspect superbly.

Born in the Isle of Man, the seventh child in a family of eight children, Catherine found it difficult to be heard amongst the constant chatter so tended to say very little, but read as many books as she could find. She made drawings on any available paper and spent as much time as possible in the woods and fields of Santon.

The Isle of Man Post Office is proud to mark this year-long festival of the arts on the Isle of Man with this celebrational stamp issue.
by J U A N M O O R E
Mark Kermode writes… What is culture? It’s the music you listen to on the radio first thing in the morning as you make breakfast, or get the kids ready for school. It’s the clothes you put on, or the jewellery you wear, or the poster for that play you really want to see, and which catches your eye in the street as you run for the bus. It’s the book you read at lunchtime, or the poem that floated around in your head all day, making you wonder where and when you heard it first. It’s the film you read about in the paper and then went to see in the cinema, only to discover that the stupid film critic didn’t know what they were talking about after all. It’s the heated discussion you had in the pub afterwards, raising your voice ever so slightly as the musicians over in the corner started playing a tune everyone in the room seemed to know. It’s the letter you wrote, the song you sang, the film you made, the reel you danced, the picture you painted, the museum you visited, the sandcastle you patted, the dinner you cooked, the photograph you took, the design you doodled - or the long quiet walk you took along the beach or out across the hills, trying to clear your mind and to get away from all that culture! Mark Kermode Film Critic, Author and Patron of Island of Culture 2014
Clare Christian writes… This is the year in which we focus on and celebrate the richness of our Island’s culture. What is our culture? Culture means different things to different people. For some it’s the traditional, the legacy passed down from Celtic and Viking forebears. It’s the language we almost lost which now springs up again; it’s Manannan’s mist and Hop tu Naa or 1000 years of parliamentary history living on in Tynwald. It’s our music, dance, art and design influenced by earlier generations and built upon by today’s vibrant choirs, bands, groups and individuals. For others it’s found in more contemporary works, influenced by modern technology which has opened up new avenues for creativity: film, video, animation, pop music, art installations, modern dance, community art works and live streaming of events from beyond our shores. It’s exploring the creativity which is latent in all of us. It may be reflected in the enjoyment derived by members of our choral societies, orchestras and brass bands, our historical, literary, art and theatrical groups who add so much to the social fabric of our Island. Our culture is embodied in the community spirit of the numerous volunteers who encourage and support both young and old in participation in the arts for their own enjoyment and for the entertainment of others. Our culture is for everyone and everyone is a part of it. It’s who we are. Hon Clare Christian BSc MLC President of Tynwald and Patron of Island of Culture 2014 6

The Isle of Man Post Office is proud to present this stamp issue to commemorate the landmark anniversary of the ‘war to end all wars’ 100 years ago. The control of warfare is a precarious business. The military make many mistakes. There is a whole world of truth in Shakespeare’s... “Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.” Once the ‘dogs’ are out it’s the turn of Burns, the Scottish bard... “The best laid schemes o’ mice and men...” Like so many military engagements WWI turned out differently to the plan. It was not meant to be a war fought from dug-out, mud-squelching, rat-infested trenches. The vision set out by the German strategist Alfred Count von Schlieffen and his successor Helmuth von Moltke was for a dashing attack across the northern plains of Europe: to sweep aside the Belgians and seize Paris before the Russians in the east got moving. It went wrong. The Russians mobilised quickly. The French resisted strongly together with their allies the Belgians and British. The Germans failed in one of the first principles of warfare, ‘to maintain the momentum of the attack’. The war stagnated. The opposing forces dug in and faced each other from Lorraine to the Belgian coast, eventually losing thousands of men in grindingly slow battles for mere yards of mud
8
along the frontiers of France, Belgium and the Low Countries. This close and locked encounter produced our familiar images of the trenches and placed into our history those well-known names Ypres... Arras... Somme... Verdun. There were so many volunteers amongst them; the Isle of Man Rifle Volunteers (raised 1860). Its orders were received on 5th August 1914. The telegram read... The Order delegates to the Lieutenant-Governor all powers with regard to calling out Volunteers exercisable by His Majesty, and orders Lieutenant-Governor to call out Volunteer Corps forthwith for actual military service. So, the Manx contribution to WWI began, manifesting itself in many ways both at home as guards to the internment camps and abroad in various theatres of the war. On 6th March 1915, Volunteers of the 1st Manx Service Company marched from the old Drill Hall, Douglas and embarked on the Isle of Man Steam Packet to form distinct Manx units in the Cheshire and King’s Liverpool Regiments. Their service was mainly in France, by which time the trenches were dug and the armies faced each other.

Communications
It is difficult to imagine how lives were governed from the blast of a whistle. A single shrill blast sent men ‘over the top’ to advance across open ground in the face of an enemy dug in behind barbed wire emplacements. Alternatively, the British Regiments could be raking the ground with their Lewis or Vickers machine guns at up to 600 rounds per minute against the advancing Germans. Sappers specially recruited from the mining communities dug deeply and stealthily beneath enemy lines to cause massive explosive damage. The vital stuff of war; food, water, ammunition was dragged through the mud by horses requisitioned from the plough.

Isle of Man Post Office marks this historic centenary with a miniature sheet which showcases art and craft work produced by a wide variety of artisans, making imaginative and ingenious use of the waste materials of warfare.
JANE A KIMBALL WRITES… The term trench art originated during World War I (“The Great War” or the “War to End All Wars”) through a series of contests sponsored by the popular French magazine ‘Le Pays de France’ for the best pieces made by ‘l’artisanat des tranchées.’ Translated into English as ‘trench art’, it has been used ever since to describe a wide variety of largely anonymous war souvenirs made from the detritus of war or from pieces of military equipment by combatants, by prisoners of war or civilian internees, by convalescent soldiers and by civilians collecting objects from battlefields to sell to soldiers or to civilians visiting battlefields after the war. Despite its name, trench art was not created by mud-splattered soldiers in soggy front-line trenches hammering out souvenirs for loved ones at home while dodging bullets and artillery shells. The noise produced by decorating shell casings and other pieces would be sure to attract fatal fire from the enemy’s trenches. Most trench art pieces were created at a distance from the front lines, either in reserve trenches, by prisoners of war or civilian internees, or by civilians collecting battlefield detritus after the war to sell to battlefield tourists. After the initial German invasion of Belgium and France, soldiers on those fronts created gifts for their relatives from battlefield detritus during lulls between battles. Many parts of the Western Front were stable “quiet sectors” except for infrequent offensives launched by one side or the other. When soldiers were moved back from the front line to reserve trenches, they picked up spent shell casings and other debris on the way to use in crafting war souvenirs. The sheer mass of troops and material on the Western Front tends to overshadow other fronts of World War I, but interesting trench art pieces were also made in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Macedonia, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli, Palestine, North and East Africa, and in Siberia and Northern Russia. The creation of a trench art piece was always dependent on the materials available to the person who created it and to his artistic skills when applied to a particular object. Although spent brass shell casings are the
10
most common medium used to create trench art, the attractiveness to most collectors is the quality of the decoration on a shell casing whether it be flowers, particular battles or places, names of military regiments, portraits of soldiers, pieces of military equipment such as tanks, aeroplanes and artillery pieces, or women in various roles as the ‘girl left behind’ or women met by overseas troops in France. Trench art collectors are also often attracted to crudely executed pieces stamped out by a soldier to express one of his personal war experiences. Other popular trench art pieces made from battlefield detritus were transformed into cigarette lighters, match box covers, tobacco boxes, letter openers, models of tanks, aeroplanes or submarines, clocks, inkwells, penny banks, picture frames, candleholders and a variety of rings, bracelets, brooches, and other pieces of jewellery to send home to their wives or sweethearts. A soldier’s military equipment, his helmet, canteen, mess tin, and canvas gas mask bag also provided surfaces for painted or engraved trench art pieces. Pilots often painted their aeroplanes to identify them and made lovely engraved objects from the plentiful broken wooden propellers. Convalescent soldiers transformed spent shell casings into vases, and made embroidered belts, pincushions and a variety of pieces of jewellery. Prisoners of war used scrap wood, soup bones, tin and other materials to make vases, trinket boxes and other handmade pieces to sell or barter for food and cigarettes. Turkish prisoners made a variety of beadwork pieces from materials furnished by the camp wardens to keep them occupied during their confinement. The Great War is often called the “golden age” of trench art. As the conduct of combat changed, and different equipment was issued to military troops, other styles of trench art were made during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Falklands War and current conflicts. As long as war persists in human culture, combatants will find new material with which to make their war souvenirs. In Iraq and Afghanistan, soldiers have made a variety of interesting and sometimes humorous video recordings to record their war service. These can be found on the Internet.

ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS PLEASED TO PRESENT A SET OF SIX STAMPS TO MARK THE 50TH DISPLAY SEASON OF THE RED ARROWS Squadron Leader Jim Turner, Red Arrows Team Leader: “Ever since the very first display by the Red Arrows, the Team has showcased – at home and overseas – the excellence of Royal Air Force personnel and equipment. Countless audiences have seen these qualities demonstrated for themselves over the years. Each sortie represents the speed, agility and precision of the Royal Air Force and is a tangible reminder of the exceptionally talented, dedicated and motivated pilots, engineers and support staff that are the Red Arrows. The Team remains an important public face of the Royal Air Force. The very nature of the work undertaken by the service often goes on out of sight of everyday gaze, which is why it is crucial we continue to highlight how the Royal Air Force in 2014 is an agile, adaptable and capable force. Indeed, the Team is a core part of the service and our pilots have previous combat experience in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and have protected the skies above the UK. Many of the Team’s men and women in the engineering and support branches have also been deployed on operations in Afghanistan and Libya and some will continue to serve overseas on detachments during their time with the Red Arrows. On leaving the Team they will all return to normal duties, directly supporting the Royal Air Force’s commitments around the globe in 12
support of the UK’s national interests. Each individual contributes to maintaining the Team’s position as a world leader and is committed to upholding the traditions and achievements established by our predecessors. Previous Teams, in whose distinguished footsteps we follow, have inspired generations and people of all ages and backgrounds. In my third year as Team Leader, I aim to continue this wonderful legacy. All members of the Team are very proud to be a part of this 50th display season and are honoured to have the opportunity to entertain audiences at home and around the world.”

Coin Collections The Isle of Man Cat series continues with the Snowshoe cat Snowshoe Cat Crown in a box AG79 £12.95 Since 1988, the Isle of Man Cat coin has delighted collectors worldwide, and the 2014 coin featuring the Snowshoe Cat and her kittens is sure to continue this tradition. The design on this coin depicts an adult Snowshoe Cat with her two kittens, with a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS on the obverse. The Cupro Nickel coin is available in a plush collector’s box. The rare Snowshoe breed originated in the United States of America in the 1960s, first appearing in Philadelphia when a Siamese breeder’s cat had kittens with white feet. They remain rare due to the difficulty of reproducing the correct coat markings; a short-haired coat consisting of solid and white patterns while the ears, tail, and face mask are solid, black-based colours. A medium large cat, and longer than many cats, the Snowshoe is generally affectionate, sweettempered and mellow, enjoying human company. They are also known to be very intelligent, and also enjoy water, having been known to swim on occasion.

The set, ideal for collectors or a great gift idea, is presented in a hard-shelled collector’s case. The coins depict just some of the 98 events being held across 15 disciplines of winter sports - the luge, figure skating, curling and alpine skiing.

Man Lands on the Moon 1969
Men first landed on the Moon, on 21st July 1969. Apollo XI American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, set his left foot on the surface of the Moon and uttered the famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was joined by fellow astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. While they collected Moon samples, the third astronaut Michael Collins, told mission 2013 control in Houston that he had successfully orbited the Moon in the mother ship Columbia.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II’S CORONATION “I am sure that this, my Coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendour that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God’s Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen”.

Future Issues Battle of Clontarf Issue date 23rd April 2014 This issue will commemorate 1,000 years since the battle of Clontarf, fought near Dublin on Good Friday, 23 April 1014, which was a watershed in the struggle to control the Irish Sea and the trading port of Dublin. The battle shaped the history of Ireland, breaking the power of the Norse but leaving the Irish kingdoms divided.
The Manx Ark Rare Breeds Miniature Sheet Issue date 15th April 2014 Commercial pressures have led to the extinction of many breeds of British farm animals. Since the 1970s, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust has worked to preserve traditional breeds, and the Isle of Man’s rare breeds farmers are vital to the effort, establishing a “Noah’s Ark” of breeding animals, and providing a valuable research base for some of the world’s rarest beasts.
Archibald Knox (1864-1933) Issue date 4th April 2014 Archibald Knox, now considered one of the leading designers of the early 20th century, started his artistic career on the Isle of Man, and the designs he produced for Liberty & Co. in London gained him an international reputation. Our issue will commemorate 150 years since the birth of a man whose distinctive and intricate designs reflect the inspiration and influence of the carved Celtic and Norse crosses that had fascinated throughout his life.
