Welcome to our Autumn 2014 Newsletter Dear Friends, My goodness it doesn’t seem that long since the start of the year when we were getting ready for our Island of Culture issue and the beginning of year-long celebrations. This issue of our newsletter sees the presentation of another style of artwork, silk painting. I saw the banners at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show and thought that they were ready made stamps, the colours are so vibrant. I hope you enjoy the mini sheet as much as I did when I saw them all together. This morning I have checked over the final proof of the 2014 Year Book. The range of topics which we have celebrated, commemorated or simply included within the year’s programme, to add interest for our collectors, have all been a pleasure to research, design and produce; each have brought about their own set of emotions. For a small Island we have made a tremendous contribution to the national and international scene over many centuries and long may that continue. To that end our national broadcaster Manx Radio has played a significant role over its 50 years to support all things Manx to the point today where you can listen in real time to broadcasts no matter where you are in the world. When we researched the issue it brought home
Tribute to Legendary Artist Robin Gibb with the Release of a Limited Edition of the Album 50 St Catherine’s Drive
to me how Manx Radio has just always been there, it’s something we tend to take for granted but the first thing you look for when anything happens on the Island, especially for people like me who don’t use social media. It is with pleasure that I would like to introduce to you our new member of staff, Tony Reynolds, who is Manx born and went to live in Canada with his parents as a child but the lure of the Island eventually brought him home. We are delighted to have Tony join our team from IMS which is another division of the Isle of Man Post Office. On behalf of the Chairman, Executive Team, and all the staff of Isle of Man Stamps and Coins I would like to thank you most sincerely for your continued support and feedback on our services; it is very much appreciated. All good wishes

Manx Aviation and Military Museum Director, Ivor Ramsden said: “We are very grateful to Isle of Man Post Office for donating this fine commemorative medallion which will be put on display along with some of the medals that were awarded to local men for their wartime service. It will make an interesting comparison in styles and is a direct link between our generation and the one which suffered the rigours of the ‘Great War’ a hundred years ago.”

Limited Edition Postmark Cover Commemorates Final Return Journey of 2014 for the Douglas Horse Trams On Sunday 14th September the final Douglas Corporation Horse Tram of 2014 departed from Derby Castle carrying its passengers and 300 special postmark covers produced by the Post Office to commemorate its final return journey of the season until spring 2016 when it reopens following promenade works. The event attracted crowds of people who waited patiently for their trip along the promenade, many reminiscing about previous journeys they had taken in the heyday of summers when the trams were full from morning to night. It was a very emotional departure with trammer “Mark” completing the journey.

DARK SKY DISCOVERY WE ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT THIS CELEBRATION OF THE WONDERFULLY CLEAR SKIES OF THE ISLE OF MAN IN COLLABORATION WITH DARK SKY DISCOVERY. HOWARD PARKIN BSc FRAS WRITES… In recent years many people have become more aware of their natural environment. In the Isle of Man this awareness encompasses not just our beautiful landscape and maritime environment but also covers the wonders and clarity of our stunning Manx night skies. It has now been formally acknowledged that in the Isle of Man we have what has long been recognised as some of the clearest skies in not just the British Isles, but in Europe.
In October 2012, it was announced that all seven had been granted Dark Sky status. This meant that the Isle of Man had a higher concentration of Dark Sky sites than any other area in the British Isles. Following overwhelming popular support for the initiative and suggestions from the public, it was decided to apply for an additional number of Dark Sky sites and, in September 2013, a further 19 sites were submitted for DSD status. All were subsequently granted DSD status in January 2014, making the Isle of Man an area with 26 Dark Sky sites, by far the highest concentration of Dark Sky sites in the British Isles.
In 2012, recognising the Island’s unique aspect, seven Dark Sky sites were identified as suitable for consideration as Grade 2, or Milky Way sites, the highest standard that is awarded by the Dark Sky Dis- The additional 19 sites are at Conrhenny, The Clypse, Baldwin and Ballure reservoirs, The Sloc, Port covery Network (DSDN), based in Edinburgh. Soderick, Ballaugh, Glen Mooar and Glen Wyllin Dark Sky Discovery status is granted for sites that have good sight lines and are fully accessible by both beaches, Peel Castle, Cregneash, Rushen Abbey, Port y Vullen, Ballanette Nature Reserve, Tynwald the general public and disabled people. From an astronomical perspective, from all Grade 2 sites you Mills car park, Onchan and Poulsom Parks, Moorought to be able to see the Milky Way clearly on dark agh Promenade and the Mount Murray Golf Club. clear moonless nights. On the Island the Milky Way has been known in Manx Gaelic as Raad Mooar re Gorry or the Great Way of King Orry, commemorating the landing of King Orry in the late 11th century. The original seven sites identified were at Axnfell Plantation, Smeale, Niarbyl, The Sound, Fort Island, Port Soderick Brooghs and the Sulby reservoir car park. All of the site landowners readily gave full support to the applications, and NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, wife of Manxman Chris, supported the application with the quote opposite. 4
From not just the Dark Sky sites, Manx stargazers can see some amazing sights in our night skies. With the naked eye, you can clearly see the Milky Way, a sight often unseen on the adjacent Isles, The Orion Nebula - some 1500 light years away - and the Milky Way’s companion galaxy the Great Andromeda Galaxy, the light from which has been on its way to us for about two and a half million years. This stamp issue shows four of the sites and, in the foreground of each, are some of the constellations that can be seen from the Island through the year.
“I TRIED ON MANY OCCASIONS TO IDENTIFY THE ISLE OF MAN FROM ORBIT, BUT I HAD GREAT DIFFICULTY BECAUSE IT IS SO DARK! I EVENTUALLY CAPTURED AN IMAGE AND IT SHOWS HOW WONDERFUL THE NIGHT SKIES IN THE ISLAND ARE. THE MANX SKIES ARE FANTASTIC FOR ASTRONOMY - GREAT FROM ABOVE, ON BOARD THE ISS (INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION) AND FROM BELOW, ON THE ISLAND.” NICOLE STOTT

MANX RADIO 50TH ANNIVERSARY The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to mark this historic landmark with a set of eight stamps. Terry Cringle, journalist and broadcaster, writes… Manx Radio has the historic distinction of being the first commercial radio station in the British Isles, at a time when broadcasting was a monopoly enjoyed by the BBC with no advertising content. The idea for it was born in 1960 by the setting up of a Manx Government-sponsored company to be a possible vehicle for launching commercial radio and TV programmes from the Isle of Man to the whole of the UK and well beyond, raising substantial revenues for the Manx Treasury. It was a brilliant and exciting concept, especially financially. It attracted a lot of nationwide attention and strong interest from individuals and organisations in offering investment support, including Granada TV in Manchester. But the scheme ran straight into trouble politically. T he UK Government was against commercial radio and used its powers to block legislation passed by Tynwald which would have made the Manx Government the Island’s station licensing authority instead of the UK’s Postmaster General. It could have been the end if there was not now great public support for the idea among the Manx people. Tynwald responded by engaging the huge electronic communications company Pye Ltd to be its technical consultants in early 1964. Pye was awarded a secret concession to establish a small, low-powered radio station which would be heard within the Isle of Man only, as a springboard for future expansion. Pye flew in the necessary technical equipment from Dublin and a caravan converted into a mobile studio arrived in Douglas by cargo ship. The caravan was taken under tow by tractor and set up in a field next to Signpost Corner. There it went on air with commentaries on the 1964 TT races. But with transmission on low levels of VHF and a feeble medium wave output, designed not to upset the UK Government, it was far from strong enough for most people in the Island to hear it. Tynwald was in no mind to give in. For the next 17 years it sent deputations to the Home Office in London asking for more power and finally it happened. Permission was given for a big increase in medium wave output with directional aerials designed to prevent the station’s commercial programmes spilling over into neighbouring areas of the UK. These were not wholly efficient and commercial radio was gaining acceptance. By this time Manx Radio was owned and operated by a Manx Government body, the Isle of Man Broadcasting Commission, with financial support to make up its losses. Now in its 50th year it is endorsed by Tynwald as the Isle of Man’s national radio station and, importantly, public service broadcaster. 6

THE ISLE OF MAN GUILD OF SILK PAINTERS TOWN BANNERS The Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this colourful miniature sheet which is the result of an exemplary collaboration between the artists and the organisers of The Celtic Kingdom Festival of Silk, Island of Culture and Manx National Heritage. Our miniature sheet showcases silk banners portraying the Island’s heritage sites, buildings and activities unique to each area painted by members of The Isle of Man Guild of Silk Painters. They were created for The Celtic Kingdom Festival of Silk 2013 when the Island’s Guild hosted the bi-annual festival. Local authorities were approached to fund banners to represent their areas and the silk painted banners were displayed during the festival at The Sayle Gallery in Douglas. At the time of writing the banners are on display as part of this year’s Island of Culture festival at the House of Manannan in Peel. Island of Culture 2014 is a year-long celebration of the Island’s talent and creativity, led by the Isle of Man Arts Council. The design and painting of the town banners were undertaken by seven of the Guild’s artists. Hilary Bruce designed the Laxey banner around the Laxey Wheel,”The Lady Isabella” and sought to incorporate a salmon in the picture for the old norse “Laxa” meaning Salmon River. Jean Buck designed Port Erin’s banner to add life to the tower at Bradda Head with a chough flying overhead. Ann Cannell chose Castletown topping her design with a crown over Castle Rushen. Jan Avron Cotton turned the Ramsey town emblem with Albert Tower into a delightful colourful image as did Chris Cowell and Sarah Goulden, who also chose the Port St Mary town emblem to work on portraying a map of the Island, a loughtan sheep, the Legs of Man and the bright red sails of a Manx nobby fishing boat. Betty Hopson’s design of Peel Castle was beautifully executed along with her design of Tynwald Hill, which was jointly worked on with Jean Buck. 8
The artists undertook a workshop led by Mary Gulland who introduced the group to the colourful banner ribbon design which brings the work together. The silk was first pinned to large frames. Designs were sketched on large sheets of brown wrapping paper and then traced onto the silk with a soft pencil. The traced designs were then sealed with a black line of “guta” a shiny glue substance that creates a strong sealed outline. This process took several days allowing for the guta to dry before painting the design. The background painting was not undertaken until the ribbon design had been added. This was the most difficult stage of the project to determine the folds and shading. The ribbons then had to be guta’ d and a further time lapse before the background and ribbon painting could complete the work. The eye-catching silk paintings can be displayed for years to come throughout the Island. At the end of the “Year of Culture” the banners will be returned to the relative town commissioners for display in the Island’s town halls. The banners will be on display at the House of Manannan until the end of this year. The Guild of Silk Painters was formed on the Isle of Man in 2011 following a workshop undertaken by Jean Buck for the Friends of Manx National Heritage at the Manx Museum. The i-Museum at the Manx Museum offered workshop facilities with the space and facilities needed to work with a group. Over the years Jean had introduced silk painting to The Mannin Art Group and members came forward to join the Guild. Following the successful bi-annual Festival membership has increased and workshops continue to take place at the i-Museum throughout the year.

THE SNOWMANTM AND THE SNOWDOG Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this heart-warming set of stamps to celebrate the story of these much-loved characters that bring so much joy to children of all ages at Christmas… Hamish Hamilton first published Raymond Briggs’ wondrous tale of The Snowman who comes to life, his friendship with James and their marvellous adventure, in 1978.
Later that day it snows and Billy builds a Snowman and, with a little spare snow, a Snowdog. That night, at the stroke of midnight, The Snowman and The Snowdog magically come to life.
The charming illustrations of the book were translated into film over 30 years ago. Now a seasonal classic in both video and Channel 4 broadcast, The SnowmanTM has become a part of everyone’s Christmas.
The boy awakes and joins them on an amazing adventure, flying over London and onwards to the North Pole, where Snowmen and Snowwomen from around the world are gathering for ‘The Annual Downhill Race’. They enter the race, competing with an assortment of colourful characters. Billy and The Snowdog narrowly win and are rewarded with a prize from Father Christmas.
In 2012 a new 30 minute film was commissioned by Channel 4 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The SnowmanTM. The SnowmanTM and The Snowdog re-unites viewers with their beloved Snowman in a brand new adventure with a new set of friends… The SnowmanTM and The Snowdog beautifully captures the magic and excitement of the original film as well as being a heart-warming story about love, loss and friendship. When a young boy, Billy, moves house, he discovers a secret box hidden under the floorboards. In it are a hat, scarf, some lumps of coal and a shrivelled tangerine - a snowman-making kit!
Dawn is breaking so Billy stuffs the present unopened into his pocket for the journey back. Once home Billy must leave his new friends outside and return to his bedroom but first, a wonderful surprise awaits him… We hope these lovely stamps bring something of the charm of the story and do justice to Raymond Briggs’ original vision.
Raymond Redvers Briggs (born 18 January 1934) is an English illustrator, cartoonist, graphic novelist and author who has achieved critical and popular success among adults and children. He is best known in Britain for The SnowmanTM but his other works, including When the Wind Blows, The Bear and Fungus the Bogeyman have also found millions of fans worldwide. 10

The 70th Anniversary of VE and VJ Day Miniature Sheet Issue date 17.02.15 Torgau, a small market town on the River Elbe south of Berlin entered into history on 25th April 1945. That day, Germany was split into two. It was victory in Europe! Berlin was being overrun and by 30th of April Hitler was dead. On 7th May, in Reims, General Jodl signed an unconditional surrender of German forces. The official VE Day was 8th of May. The news spread and the world rejoiced.
“It’s a great relief. Our biggest treat tonight will be - no blackout and a double issue of rum. We’ll think of the comradeship that has carried us to victory.” Death of a Hero – Sir Winston Churchill. 1874-1965 Issue date 02.01.15 Great Britain has had some determined and single-minded leaders, few so much as Winston Spencer Leonard Churchill, a man who fought in the greatest war the world has ever seen and led his country through its successor war twenty years later. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of his death and 70th anniversary of his tenure as Prime Minister, Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of eight stamps portraying the lasting legacy which Sir Winston left to not only the British nation but worldwide.
