Welcome to our Spring 2015 Newsletter I am writing this on our return from the Easter break and send our congratulations to Mr Ransome, the winner of ‘Winston the Eggman’ competition. I hope you have entered the competition for an original Penny Black, catalogued at £500. The presentation from Stanley Gibbons is very striking have a go you just never know! Another interesting item due for release on the 6th May 2015 is our limited edition Mulready Folder, the finished item is impressive. Since last writing to you my right hand lady, Mirella, left Stamps & Coins for pastures new. Mirella is a great people person, always eager not only to help our customers but also to hear more about their collections and have a general chat. We pride ourselves on offering you a very personal and friendly service and anytime you need help or advice we are just at the end of the phone, email or by letter. I must just tell you about a very special event which took place on the day of the partial solar eclipse on 20th March. If, like me, you didn’t get a good view due to low cloud you will understand the excitement we felt when later in the day Alan Bean, the fourth Moonwalker, spoke to local schoolchildren via Skype about his NASA career. The young people prepared

a series of well thought out questions and Alan responded in such a way that the 9/10 year olds gained a very personal insight into the life of an astronaut. Currently we are working very closely with education professionals to make available our stamp and coin material to help with aspects of the curriculum. We also make stamps available for letter writing purposes. I am sure you will agree the pleasure of getting an unexpected letter (not a bill!) through the letterbox makes your day. Thank goodness 175 years after Rowland Hill, Thomas Mulready and Co., established the universal postal system. The postal stamp still has a part to play in our daily lives and I treasure every letter which is stamped. All good wishes

The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to present a set of stamps which reproduces 10 panels from the Tapestry by kind permission of the President of Tynwald.

T

he Millennium Tapestry was completed and presented to Tynwald to celebrate the Millennium in 1979 by the Isle of Man’s branch of the Woman’s Institute who celebrate their 65th anniversary in 2015, the WI as an organisation celebrates their 100th anniversary in 2015. The Tapestry was made by embroiderers in the Isle of Man during the period from spring 1977 to April 1979. The work was widely publicised and any person, of either sex, who was skilled with a needle could apply for cloth and design. There are 78 embroidered squares. The Tapestry was financed through the Millennium Committee of Tynwald. The basic design was laid out along the lines of traditional American commemorative patchworks, where many needle workers contribute a piece of work and the whole is stitched together to make one hanging, or it can be a bed-quilt to commemorate a wedding. The Tapestry was intended as a celebration of 1000 years of Tynwald. The main historical events in the life of Tynwald were given pride of place. Time starts with the arrival of the Vikings and moves through the ages to the modern Tynwald building. The Tapestry is on display on the ground floor in the Legislative buildings on Finch Road, Douglas. The Legislative Buildings are open from 09.00 - 17.00 Monday - Friday, excluding public holidays. The Isle of Man Post Office is very grateful to Paul Dougherty, Seneschal to the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald who photographed the Tapestry during restoration work. The Viking Arrival - Norse invasions of the Island began in 800AD and the Island remained under Norse rule until 1266. The Norse set up Tynwald. Manx Bill of Rights - The Manx Bill of Rights was passed to ensure the law was being properly enforced and meant that the accused was assured the right of trial by Jury. Tourist Industry - The Manx tourist industry is made up of many facets which include, for example, outdoor activities both on land and sea, the various Heritage Railway systems, Motorsports, Wildlife, Arts and Culture. 4

Spuds ‘n’ Herring - A traditional Manx meal of potatoes and herring. Fishing Industry - The Manx “Nobby” was purpose built for herring fishing in the 1890s. TT - The TT (Tourist Trophy) races celebrated their Centenary in 2007. It originated when a course was needed on public roads to hold trials for the Gordon Bennett car racing trials. Transport - Only one line of a once vast Steam Railway system remains on the Isle of Man. Originally built in the late 1800s the 3 feet track gauge lines covered about fifty miles. Now only the southern line, operating since 1874, continues. It covers around 15 miles from Douglas to Port Erin. The unique Manx Electric Railway, built between 1893 and 1899, is located on the eastern coast of the Island connecting the towns of Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey. The line still operates with the majority of its original Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock in daily use along arguably some of the most scenic stretches of railway in the British Isles. When bus competition became a threat to the Isle of Man Railway it bought out the bus company and operated it as “Isle of Man Road Services” in conjunction with the railway. As the railway company began to falter, it relied more heavily on the bus operation, and when the railway lines closed for the first time in 1965 the bus services were intensified to replace the removed rail services. The vehicles of Road Services carried an all-over red livery with two off-white bands and the Railway Company crest was modified to include a facsimile of a bus instead of a railway locomotive. House of Keys in Castletown - The Old House of Keys in Castletown was used as the meeting place of the House of Keys until 1867. Women’s Suffrage - Women could vote on the Island from 1881. The picture depicts women campaigning on Ramsey beach for Women’s Suffrage. Tynwald Hill - Tynwald Hill is 12ft high and said to be of soil brought from each of the 17 parishes.

THE ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS PROUD TO HAVE COLLABORATED WITH THE ISLE OF MAN FEDERATION OF THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ON THIS SET OF SIX STAMPS IN CELEBRATION OF ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF CAMARADERIE AND CAMPAIGNING WORK TO IMPROVE SOCIETY IN SO MANY VITAL ASPECTS. LIKE THEIR WI CENTENARY SYMBOL OUR STAMPS ARE ROSE-SCENTED... Established in 1915 in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, the WI is the largest women’s voluntary membership organisation in the UK and has over 212,000 members in 6,600 WIs across England, Wales and the Islands. The organisation was originally established to provide educational opportunities for women and revitalise rural life, and although the activities members engage with today have changed over time, the aims of the WI remain the same; to educate and inspire women, wherever their life leads them. Although it was not the reason why the WI was formed, the timing of the first meeting and the initial growth of the organisation meant that many members were involved in essential work during both World Wars, including the nowfamous jam making that kept the nation going. Nowadays, the aims of the organisation have widened, but many WI members still join primarily to make new friends, learn and develop skills, and make positive changes to their local – and in many cases national – communities. Every WI is as individual as its members, and each member has the opportunity to influence what their fellow members learn about at meetings, and campaign on at a national level. The organisation is entirely democratic; every campaign issue that the organisation works on stems from a WI member’s resolution, and each meeting topic is decided by the members of that WI, meaning that members truly shape the organisation and play a key role in ensuring it continues for another 100 years. Every WI belongs to a federation – there are 69 in total – and the Isle of Man Federation was formed in 1950. With 750 members in 30 WIs, members have always taken an active 6

interest in Island life. WI members can get involved in a huge range of activities from craft and home economics, to public affairs and science; there really is something for everyone. Throughout the summer, the Federation takes a leading role at the agricultural shows with marquees showing off the very best of the WI, and encouraging women from across the Island to give their local WI a try.

As WI members celebrate 100 years of the organisation and everything that it has offered women throughout their lives, it is important to look forward to what the organisation can continue to offer. There are chances throughout the year to celebrate with fellow members – locally and nationally – to look back on the wealth of achievements of members, and to commend the work of every woman who has been able to make a positive change for herself, her community, or the nation through the WI. The true strength and power of the WI is its members, and 2015 is the year to celebrate each and every one.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet of four stamps featuring the paintings of artist, mariner and Manxman John Halsall. We also mark a number of historic anniversaries from our rich Manx maritime heritage…

Matthew Richardson, Curator of Social History at Manx National Heritage writes…

tow. A few months later, the crew were presented with medals to mark their heroism.

The Isle of Man has a long and proud tradition as a seafaring nation, and for many generations its people have made a living from the sea. The oldest surviving Manx vessel is the Peggy, of Castletown. Built by the enigmatic George Quayle in 1790, she is also now the world’s oldest yacht, the only surviving example of a shallop, and is believed to be the only civilian craft fitted with sliding keels. Quayle makes reference to the Peggy in his correspondence, and remarks upon a trip to Windermere, where she was raced, and the hazardous journey back in rough seas. He states that were it not for the sliding keels, she could not have carried enough sail and all aboard would have been lost.

Later that same year, HMS Ramsey (a former Steam Packet vessel serving with the Royal Navy) was on patrol in the North Sea, searching for contraband. She stopped a vessel flying the Russian flag, only to discover this was a ruse de guerre. In reality the vessel was the German raider Meteor, and the Ramsey was raked with gunfire. She sank quickly, and as many of her crew were local naval reservists, it was one of the darkest single days of the war for the Manx people.

Perhaps the oldest Manx vessel still afloat is the Master Frank, built by Clucas and Duggan in Ramsey around 1896. She was subsequently purchased by the Kinnin family, who fished mainly for cod, using a long-line. She remained with them until 1964 when Willie Kinnin sold her. She is generally regarded as the only surviving Manx half-decker, these boats being built for speed and to cope with the short, sharp seas found to the north east of Ramsey, where these vessels plied their trade fishing. After a thorough rebuild she was re-launched in 1996, and is still a regular sight at traditional boat events. During the First World War, Manx seafarers were on the frontline of the war at sea. In May 1915 the Peel vessel Wanderer was fishing off Kinsale when she saw the liner Lusitania heading for Liverpool. The area was known to be patrolled by U-boats, and a few minutes later, the Lusitania was torpedoed. The Wanderer’s skipper had no hesitation in ordering his men to head straight for the stricken liner and her helpless passengers and crew. She was the first rescue vessel on the scene, and the little boat picked up numerous survivors and took two lifeboats in 8

The ships of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company were also called upon to play their part in the Second World War. Having been chartered as a troop ship, a number of which participated in the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940, Mona’s Queen was on her way to rescue British and French soldiers on 29th May when she struck a German mine. Some 24 members of her crew, most of them Manx, were lost along with one of the finest vessels in the Company’s fleet. The IOMSPCo vessel Ben my Chree III was launched in 1908, and was one of the fastest steamers in British coastal waters. For this reason, with the outbreak of the First World War, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and converted into a seaplane carrier. She took part in the operations at Gallipoli in 1915, and her place in history was secured when she assisted in the sinking of the first vessel to be destroyed by a torpedo launched from an aircraft. HMS Ben my Chree was herself lost in 1917 when, sheltering in the harbour of Castelorizzo, she was hit by Turkish gunfire. With the petrol in her hangars ablaze she was quickly gutted, but there were no casualties.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to celebrate this most significant historical landmark in collaboration with Waterloo 200. The Battle of Waterloo marked the end of the Revolutionary (1792-1803) and Napoleonic (18041815) wars. These long conflicts cost Britain dear financially and also, resulted in a greater proportional loss of population than World War One.

British/German and Dutch force under the Duke, undefeated also withdrew north, to a ridge straddling the road south from Brussels. Bonaparte followed, having detached 30,000 men to prevent the Prussians joining Wellington.

Over a long career, the Duke of Wellington’s abilities as a commander had improved, after gaining logistical and political experience in India and during the Peninsular War (1808-14). Napoleone di Buonarparte, a Corsican, attended military academies in France and, having survived the Revolution, was promoted brigadier general and later created First Consul in 1799. With successive European coalitions ranged against him, he won victories against Austria, Prussia and Russia. Crowned Emperor of France in 1804, his power overreached itself and, after losing the Peninsular War, the Russian campaign (1812) and the Battle of Leipzig (1813), he was exiled to the Isle of Elba.

After a severe storm the previous night, by Sunday 18th June, wet ground prevented an early start. A three-mile Allied line, with three defended farms in front (Hougoumont, on the right, La Haye Sainte and Papelotte) waited for Bonaparte’s first move. At 11.30am Hougoumont was attacked, the first of several assaults which lasted all day. The farm, defended by German and British troops, held.

By 1814 with victory in Europe and Napoleon’s first abdication, the war was over and the Congress of Vienna was assembled to re-establish a new order in Europe. After a surprise return to France (March 1815), four armies, the British/German and Dutch army (c. 100,000), the Prussian force (c. 120,000), also the distant Russian and Austrian armies were mobilised against him. Anticipating an Allied invasion, Bonaparte advanced rapidly with 125,000 men (the Armée du Nord) to the border of France with the Netherlands (now Belgium). Napoleon and Wellington had never faced each other in battle, before Waterloo. After two preliminary battles at Ligny and Quatre Bras, north of the border town of Charleroi, on the 16th June, a Prussian force, under Field Marshal Blücher was defeated and retired northwards. The 10

Around 12.45pm a 64-gun battery fired on Wellington’s left centre, followed by a 17,000-strong infantry assault. This was repelled by a strong but wasteful British heavy cavalry attack, countered by French cavalry. A Prussian corps assaulted Napoleon’s right rear at Plancenoit. Bonaparte, depleted of infantry, launched several heavy cavalry assaults on the Allies, many units of which had formed up in squares. These French assaults failed. Around 6.30pm the German-held central farm of La Haye Sainte fell and Wellington’s positon was increasingly threatened. Finally, another Prussian force appeared on Wellington’s left. Napoleon launched a determined assault around 7.30pm, by around 4,000 of his Imperial Guard, which was repulsed. Victory was complete and Prussian cavalry pursued the French off the battlefield. The victory was momentous, but the ‘Butcher’s Bill’ high – 55,000 men killed, wounded or missing. The Duke pursued a political career and lived until 1852, whilst Bonaparte, banished to St Helena, died of stomach cancer in 1821.

The Battle of Waterloo marked the end of the Revolutionary (1792-1803) and Napoleonic (1804-1815) wars. Isle of Man Railway Letter Stamps Folder Issue date 27th March 2015

THE PENNY BLACK MULREADY FOLDER Issue date 6th May 2015

To celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Penny Black, this album includes two reproduction Mulready envelopes, four caricature envelopes and a specially-designed Postal History Stamp Sheet, with words and pictures supplied by Robin Cassell of Mulready Philatelics. Commissioned by the General Post Office, William Mulready designed pre-cut postal stationery lettersheets and envelopes which went on sale at the same time as the Penny Black and Twopenny Blue adhesive stamps, or ‘labels’, 6th May 1840.

The Penny Black Mulready Folder TE43 £20.00

The lettersheets and envelopes were widely caricatured until, within two months, it was decided to replace the Mulready stationery. The Mulready caricatures contribute to an amusing and colourful chapter in the history of the uniform postal reforms.

Future Issues Manx Buses ‘All Aboard’ Part 2 Issue date 15.07.15 These new stamps feature Manx buses from both the Douglas Corporation and Road Services fleets and 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of their amalgamation to form Isle of Man National Transport. This colourful collection augments our “All Aboard Please!” issue of 1999, proving that, like buses, good stamps are worth the wait! 50th Anniversary of The Curraghs Wildlife Park Issue date 03.07.15 Since its opening in 1965, the Curraghs Wildlife Park has been home to some of the world’s most endangered species. Over the last 50 years it has successfully bred fishing cats, red pandas, Humboldt penguins, Waldrapp ibis, Bali starlings, scarlet macaws, Brazilian tapirs and Madagascan teal, to name but a few, providing education and recreation to thousands of visitors each year. Pomp and Circumstance Her Majesty The Queen Issue date 18.06.15 Thursday 10 September 2015 marks a very special day in the Royal calendar. At the grand age of 89, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, has become the longest reigning monarch in over 1,200 years of British History. The Companies Act due on the 1st April has been postponed because of approvals around the companies. It will now be issued on the 1st September and has been replaced by the Millennium of Tynwald Tapestry issued on the 10th April.
