Stamps and Coins at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show To celebrate the launch of the Aardman – 40 Years of Creativity Stamp collection, Isle of Man Stamps and Coins bought Shaun the Sheep and Mossy Bottom to the Royal Manx Agricultural Show. As well as showing off the colourful collection, we also ran a competition encouraging children and young people to hand write birthday messages to Aardman which then went on to one giant birthday card for the world famous animation studio. We also raised £300 for The Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Charity and two local agricultural charities by asking people for a donation to place a stamp on our Shaun the Sheep model. Over 5000 people came through the stand which was a great success.

Islands and Bridges by Roger Dean Exhibition Our Islands and Bridges stamp collection marks a most significant collaboration between Roger Dean, Isle of Man Post Office and Manx National Heritage as it coincides with a landmark exhibition, of the same name, at the Manx Museum in Douglas. At a private viewing of the exhibition Isle of Man Post Office Chairman Ray Harmer MHK presented the internationally acclaimed artist and designer, with a framed set of his stamps. The exhibition, which is on until Saturday 19th November, includes Dean’s painting ‘Meeting Place’ which was influenced by the Isle of Man and produced exclusively for our stamp collection.
Autumn Stampex Representatives from Isle of Man Stamps and Coins attended and exhibited at this year’s autumn Stampex show. We had a great time showcasing our latest collections and meeting with our wonderful customers. Stampex also provides us with the perfect opportunity to meet and catch up with press, key contacts, clients and suppliers from all over the UK and further afield. We were also visited by Elizabeth Forrester of the Stephen Hawking Foundation who has been pivotal in our 100 Years of General Relativity stamp collection. Here she is pictured with Ben Glazier from Glazier Design who designed the collection.
Variable Value Definitives Speaking of Stampex we are very excited to reveal that we will be attending Spring Stampex to launch our Variable Value Definitives pictorial stamps. This first issue from Isle of Man Post Office will feature four highly attractive designs based on the Three Legs of Mann. These are the three legs as they appear in Douglas Town Hall, the Triskellion design that includes the smaller visuals of the Millennium of Tynwald three legs, the three legs as seen on a building in Castletown and a modern interpretation of the Three Legs of Mann.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps showcasing the work of internationally-renowned artist and designer Roger Dean. The issue marks a most significant collaboration between the artist, Isle of Man Post Office and Manx National Heritage and coincides with a landmark exhibition at the Manx Museum in Douglas. The original painting Meeting Place, inspired by the Island, was created for the stamp issue and the exhibition… Artist and designer Roger Dean was born in England in 1944. He is internationally renowned for his album cover designs, posters and books. His paintings, on which many of these designs are based, form an impressive body of work essentially defining a genre in which he is the primary creator and inspiration to others. He is also famous for his eco architecture, furniture and stage designs, along with his typefaces, logos and iconic designs for the computer games industry. He attended Canterbury College of Art and later the Royal College of Art, where he received a first class Master’s Degree and won the silver medal for work of special distinction. As a student he designed the Sea Urchin Chair, exhibited at the Design Centre in London and now part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s permanent furniture collection. The V&A also acquired two original Yes logo paintings, plus other sketches, which are now part of their permanent collection of prints, drawings and paintings. More than sixty million copies of Roger Dean’s images have been sold around the world as album covers, posters, cards, calendars and books. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal College of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London and the New York Culture Center, USA. In 2010 the Daelim Contemporary Art Museum in Seoul, Korea held a major retrospective of Dean’s work. Five years later eight of his paintings appeared in Revolutions 2 – The Art of Music, an exhibition at the Forest Lawn Museum in California. His Isle of Man exhibition Islands 6
and Bridges features 24 works and runs until November. In December 2016 six works will be on show in an exhibition of album art in Ludwigsburg, Germany. Three volumes chronicle the works of Roger Dean: Views (1975), Magnetic Storm (1984) and Dragon’s Dream (2008). His work has inspired generations of young men and women who have gone on to become professional designers and artists. It also, as Roger frequently says, demonstrates the importance of never going anywhere without a sketchbook and a pencil. “Roger created new ways of seeing things, through painting, record cover design, publishing and architecture, and as a consequence made it seem as if life could be a bit more of an adventure than many of us had previously been led to believe. The crazy thing is that we still haven’t caught up with many of his eco ideas. Let’s hope we do so some time soon.” Richard Branson
“For me personally, Roger’s art has a way of leading me gently into the canvas to embark on a journey of neverending discovery. There always seems to be something new to discover, and that is where his association with music really stands out. Music also needs to offer something new with every visit. Put the two mediums together, and you have something really special. And that is the one word that sums up Roger Dean and his work: special. In fact, in retrospect, there should be the adverb ‘very’ before that adjective!” Rick Wakeman

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to be part of the Europa stamp project for 2016, “Ecology in Europe – Think Green”, with this set of five stamps. The issue celebrates the Isle of Man being awarded UNESCO status as a world biosphere region – the first entire country to gain this prestigious accolade. It is a tremendous honour for the Island to become the first entire country in the world to receive biosphere status and the award is a tribute to those groups and individuals dedicated to ecological and environmental work being carried out across the Isle of Man. Fittingly, the theme for the Europa 2016 stamp is “Think Green” and for our 77p stamp we have joined postal services around Europe in the unusual step of sharing a common design to mark the 60th anniversary of the Europa stamp movement. The stamp motif shows a hand actively replacing the grey colour, representing environmental pollution, with green to symbolise environmental living and hope, and that “it is in our hands to create a greener planet”. That is a message reflected in many aspects of Island life, for example in the community’s commitment to ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. In 2004 an Energy from Waste plant, featured in the £1.13 stamp, was opened to stop the 60,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial rubbish produced every year going to landfill. Instead, it is all processed at the plant and is converted to produce ten per cent of the Island’s electricity, with state-of-theart technology and an onsite laboratory ensuring the highest environmental and operational standards are maintained. The Isle of Man is also gaining a reputation for developing green technology, perhaps most notably through the advancement of electric bike racing. The Island is famous for the annual TT motorcycle races, but history was made in 2009 with the first race 8
around the Mountain Course for electric-powered machines. There were doubters, but eight years on TT Zero, pictured on our £1.47 stamp, is going strong with the outright lap record – an average speed of 119.27mph around the 37¾-mile circuit – comparable to the speeds achieved by petrol-fuelled motorcycles. Categories for electric machines can now be found in motorsport – both two wheeled and four – around the world. Our £2.33 stamp is inspired by the Island’s efforts to invest in renewable energy production. In the heart of the picturesque Tholt-y-Will stands an anonymous building which is part of this movement. It contains two 600 kilowatt turbines which are powered by water from the nearby Block Eary and Sulby reservoirs. Together they produce up to four gigawatt hours of hydroelectric power every year, meeting one per cent of the Isle of Man’s annual demand.
Forestry Stewardship Council To underline our commitment to protecting the environment, this issue proudly carries the logo of the Forestry Stewardship Council. The FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests and all printers involved in this issue are FSC-accredited.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to celebrate the incredible achievement of the Solar Impulse team, flying around the world powered only by the Sun, with this miniature sheet commemorating a world-first for clean technology. We are proud supporters of the project through the purchase of solar panels. On 9th March 2015, after a dozen years of intense research and development, an aircraft took to the skies to begin an almost impossible challenge; Solar Impulse 2 departed from Abu Dhabi on the first leg of its challenge to fly around the world powered only by the Sun. Swiss pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg set out on the incredible journey with the aim of showing that clean technologies can achieve impossible goals. They wanted to prove that the zero-emissions technology could reduce energy consumption and save natural resources, while demonstrating the potential of renewable energy. More than a year after first taking off, Solar Impulse 2 touched down in Abu Dhabi on 26th July 2016, marking the completion of a world first. Over 17 legs and more than 500 hours in the air, 40,000kms had been travelled without fuel and the globe had been circumnavigated by an aircraft using only solar power for the first time. It had flown at day and night, with Bertrand and André taking turns at the control, stopping off at airports across Europe, North America and Asia during the amazing journey. It had been a remarkable adventure, attracting worldwide media attention and proving that clean technologies can achieve seemingly impossible goals. Solar Impulse 2 spent more than 21 days in the air, and silenced the doubters on the record-breaking leg between Nagoya, Japan, and Honolulu in Hawaii. André took the controls for the Pacific Ocean crossing, which took four days, 21 hours and 51 minutes and became the 10
longest-ever solo endurance flight after breaking Steve Fossett’s record from 2006. The regular stops were dictated by the endurance of the pilots as Solar Impulse 2 could, theoretically, fly forever with its energy supplies being constantly replenished through 17,000 photovoltaic cells. With the Isle of Man’s recognised commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the development of zero emissions technology, as shown by its UNESCO Biosphere status, it was with great pride that the Isle of Man Post Office sponsored Solar Impulse 2’s cells 4883, 4909 and 4935, ensuring the Island was a part of this incredible achievement.
SOLAR IMPULSE 2 The solar aircraft has a wingspan of 236 feet (72 metres), making it wider than a Boeing 747, but offered the pilots only a cramped cockpit rather than the comfort enjoyed on board a Jumbo Jet. It could travel at 30mph during flight, climbing to altitudes of 29,000 feet during the day to charge its batteries via thousands of photovoltaic cells and dropping to as low as 5,000 feet at night.

The Isle of Man Post Office is happy to present this colourful fun-filled set of six stamps celebrating the world of pantomime at Christmas and highlighting some of the most popular and iconic shows which have brought joy to so many for generations. Particular attention is paid to the pantos which have graced stages across the Isle of Man, including the legendary Gaiety Theatre, over the years. The story of pantomime is told by eminent British panto performer Christopher Biggins… Pantomime has its roots in ancient Greece, but pantomime shows, as we know them today, came into being in the middle of the 19th century as a way of presenting a children’s fairytale. It was further developed by the great impresario Sir Augustus Harris, Manager of London’s Drury Theatre. For my own part I first was offered a role in pantomime in the town of Darlington in 1975 playing Mother Goose. I’ve played roles in TV sitcoms (Porridge), period dramas (Poldark), cult shows (Rocky Horror Show) but, of them all, I love the pantomime; I love the audience participation and it’s the one show you can really “ham it up” playing to the audience. It’s an extraordinary part of British theatre, which will go on forever. Every town in the country produces a pantomime, professional or amateur, ranging from exotic productions with state of the art technology through to local amateur dramatics with wobbly scenery and handmade props. It all works because that is the beauty of pantomime - pleasing hundreds of thousands of children and adults, it is so special because of the range it covers. Children remember the first pantomime they attended and then they pass this wonderful experience on to their children. Long may it continue…
12
A Very Manx Panto A trip to the theatre to see a pantomime is as much a traditional part of Christmas as turkey and Christmas trees. Normally audiences in theatres and cinemas are instructed to keep quiet…but the rules don’t apply here. Audiences, young and old, are encouraged to get involved in the singing, booing the villains and warning the heroes “he’s behind you!!” The Isle of Man has a rich culture in pantomime with professional productions at the Gaiety Theatre and local shows in the parishes around the Island. This year The Wizard of Oz is being performed at the Gaiety and it promises to be a spectacular show taking the audience on a journey along the magical yellow brick road. Local group productions follow the traditional pantomime themes but include much more local humour - making fun of the well-known characters in our community. Everyone can get involved in local panto, it sometimes helps if you can act or sing! There is also so much hard work behind the scenes in each production, whether it’s making costumes, painting scenery or helping on the night. Local businesses like to actively support pantos in their own areas embodying the fantastic spirit found in the Manx community. Plus, of course, our Island is full of talented performers! The annual pantomime is the one show that grandparents, parents and children can all enjoy together. Alison Lodge

Future Issues
2017 marks a very exciting year for Isle of Man Stamps and Coins with the issue of our first ever Variable Valuable Definitives Collection at Spring Stampex.
Our Civic Pride collection will also be due in the first quarter of the year and this will feature a stamp for the 2017 Europa theme of Castles. For motorsport fans, we will be celebrating 110 years of the Isle of Man TT Races with a collection dedicated to legendary Great British Motorcycles. Coming later in the year we will have collections covering some of our most popular themes including nature, military and royalty. For the most up to date information about our stamp and coin collections please visit www.iomstamps.com.
