Spring 2018
In this issue... Harry & Meghan – A Celebration • Year of Our Island • The Manx International Scooter Rally Great British Motorcycles • The launch of Isle of Man Banknotes • Highlights from our collections • A glimpse at our future issues and much more…
Welcome to our Spring 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends, Welcome to our latest edition of Stamps & Coins News. It is with pleasure that I talk to you a little about our latest issues which feature in this edition. The Year of Our Island stamp issue is particularly special as we support the Island wide initiative to celebrate all that is good about our Island home. It’s very easy sometimes to only reflect on things that don’t work for one reason or another, but through our stamp issues, you, like me, have a unique insight into the terrific achievements of our small nation since the establishment of Tynwald in 979. The aims of the project are to not only recognise “our differences that make the difference” but also to celebrate and commemorate the contribution that Manx men and women have made far beyond our shores. These sentiments shine through many of our collections for 2018. The Island continues to welcome enthusiasts from all parts of the globe to experience first-hand our motorsport activities. When I was growing up we had TT week and then Scooter Week followed soon after, it is therefore great to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the International Scooter Rally with a new set of stamps and we look forward to welcoming the enthusiasts back in June. The sight of so many scooters, many expressing their owners’ personality through customised modifications is something I’m certainly looking forward to. On the 3rd April 2018 we introduced a new price guide for postal services and I have extracted some of the rates to give you an insight into the postal requirements for the values which will feature on our issues up to February 2019. I hope you will find this both useful and interesting. Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

The event was attended by representatives of the Isle of Man RAF Air Cadets and Isle of Man RAF Association, as well as pilots from RAF Valley who landed at Ronaldsway Airport, Isle of Man, in two RAF aircraft - Hawk T2 - specifically for the event. A spokesperson from RAF Valley said, “We were very honoured by the Isle of Man Post Office to attend this event which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the RAF. Isle of Man Post Office pays tribute to Professor Stephen Hawking On the news of the passing of Professor Stephen Hawking on Wednesday 14th March, Isle of Man Post Office offered its sincere condolences to his family and friends and to Elizabeth Forrester (Executive Director) and the Trustees of The Stephen Hawking Foundation. IOMPO also reflected with pride, the honour and privilege it felt to be chosen by The Stephen Hawking Foundation to record his life’s work on postage stamps in July 2016. On seeing the final set of stamps, which hung on his living room wall, Professor Hawking said: “Much of my life’s work has been to encourage young people in the study of cosmology and astrophysics and to help inspire them to better understand our universe and beyond. I hope that this unique set of stamps goes some way towards achieving this.”

Isle of Man Post Office congratulates HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle on their royal engagement. To celebrate this special occasion we present a set of two stamps featuring the happy couple.
Austin Mutti-Mewse writes… Prince Harry 33, is known to be “thrilled” to be marrying Ms Markle the US actress 36, after an eighteen-month romance. The union was officially announced with a photo call within the sunken garden, a favourite haven of his late mother HRH Princess Diana of Wales, at the couple’s new home of Kensington Palace. The Palace was also the location for the Prince’s proposal, at his Nottingham Cottage home nestled in the Palace grounds. Ms Markle said the moment was “just amazing” and “so sweet and natural and very romantic.” Ms Markle’s three-diamond engagement ring set on a band of gold was made by Her Majesty The Queen’s Court Jeweller, Cleave & Company and designed by Prince Harry himself, using two stones which belonged to Princess Diana. At the centre is a diamond from Botswana, a country that holds a special significance for the Prince who has made numerous visits to the country since boyhood. Prince Harry will have a pivotal role within the Commonwealth, and both he and Meghan are interested in making it more relevant to younger people. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are “delighted” for their grandson and his bride-tobe, and “wish them every happiness together.” Both Prince Harry’s older brother The Duke of Cambridge and The Duchess of Cambridge are “very excited for the couple.” The Prime Minister Mrs Theresa May offered the couple her “warmest congratulations.”
4
Ms Markle’s father and mother issued a joint statement wishing the couple “a lifetime of happiness,” adding “we are so incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry.” As one royal insider put it, making reference to Ms Markle’s beginnings in Hollywood, and the signature tune of American crooner Frank Sinatra, this royal couple will execute arrangements in the run up to their wedding day on Saturday 19th May “their way.” Whether it be the choice of banana, a favourite fruit of the couple, as an ingredient for the wedding cake or the eclectic guest list for the day itself, or an invite from The Queen to join her and the Royal Family at Sandringham this Christmas, there is certain to be a break from tradition. Fifth in line to the throne, Prince Harry has been dating Ms Markle, known widely for her leading role in the US television drama ‘Suits’, since July 2016. Prince Harry asked Ms Markle’s father’s permission to marry in the summer of 2017. Prince Harry and Ms Markle will marry at the momentous St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, just as his uncle the Earl of Wessex did in 1999. The Chapel is one of the most hallowed shrines of the British monarchy; within its walls great kings are buried, including Prince Harry’s great-great grandfather George V, his great grandparents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Her Majesty’s beloved parents. The wedding ceremony will take place in front of a backdrop of sublime examples of heraldic art which date back centuries.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this issue of ten stamps to mark a very special year in which we celebrate ‘our Island’ as a special place to live and work. Year of Our Island 2018 was inspired and informed by the recent UNESCO World Biosphere status awarded to the Island in 2016. Our ‘man and the biosphere’ status celebrates our living land and seascape, and the people living and working within, enjoying and supporting that environment. It is about balancing a vibrant community, valued environment and resilient economy, and remaining a special place for people and nature.
Chairman of Year of Our Island, Minister for Policy and Reform, Chris Thomas MHK (Member of the House of Keys) writes: ‘We know that our Island is a special place for people and nature and that was recognised by UNESCO which designated the Isle of Man as the first ever islandnation in its entirety to be awarded the status of world biosphere region. This year, 2018, will bring opportunities for us to value not only our environment but also our culture, heritage and community, and to remind ourselves how these enhance our quality of life and our health and well-being.
Simon Park Isle of Man-based professional photographer Simon Park has spent nearly 40 years photographing the Island and we have selected images that we hope convey the variety of experiences and contrasting scenery that Manx residents have at their disposal: the ten images range from ancient stones to sports festivals. The Stamps Ist Class Values: Walkers above Fleshwick; TT Fireworks and Lights; Port Erin Sandcastles; Manx Telecom Parish Walk; Michael Starkey Painting, Sulby.
EU Values: Niarbyl Coast; Skeddan Jiarg Dance Group; ‘It is also an opportunity for us to take care of our environment and our community by ensuring the impact Sunset at Peel; The Lonan Cross; Niarbyl Cottage. we have on our Island is positive. The Niarbyl Coast stamp is our contribution to the SEPAC (Small European Postal Administrations ‘This year is about championing existing events, Cooperation) ‘Spectacular Views’ project for 2018. activities and the sense of community that already exists on our Island, encouraging people to explore more, do more and share more. We want people to make the most of the things that already exist, whether it’s visiting our striking glens and beaches, joining in with our community groups, taking part in sporting and cultural events or volunteering time to maintain, support or enhance our natural and built environment’ The Isle of Man has much to be proud of and this year is an opportunity to celebrate the many positive aspects of living and working on our Island. Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to recognise the sporting and cultural significance of scootering on the Isle of Man while marking the 60th anniversary of the first Manx International Motor Scooter Rally. Our stamps feature eight aspects of this remarkable and multi-faceted festival. The story is described by author of Scooter Mania!, Steve Jackson… The first post-war scooter rally is believed to have taken place in 1948, essentially a camping trip in France organised by the Corgi Club. The scooter boom of the early 1950s, inspired by a cheap and accessible form of mobility, led to the formation of several clubs, openly encouraged by the Italian manufacturers. In 1952, Vespa held a rally in Bristol followed by a national rally in Brighton the following year. In 1955, the Lambretta clubs staged their first rally, by which time rallies in all the main towns and cities of the UK had become a regular event. The idea of an Isle of Man scooter rally first appeared in the Isle of Man Examiner on 26th October 1956. Mr JM Cain, candidate for East Douglas in the forthcoming election, made the suggestion, along with postponing the TT motorcycle race week until later in June, and the setting up of a commission to look at travel to and from the Island with a view to increasing the numbers of visitors. He believed that a scooter rally would be a big attraction, because of the opportunity to compete over the TT course, and that it would give all the entertainments a full two weeks of trade. He also suggested the revival of the Highland Gathering, which had been successful before the war. After the success of the inaugural Isle of Man National Scooter Rally, MHK JM Cain led a delegation on behalf of the IOM Tourist Board to visit Germany and Austria with a view to expanding the event on the lines of similar rallies in Europe. As a result, the event went international, for which Lambretta organised a publicity display on the Island. Former TT rider and Motorcycling Road Champion Freddie Frith was amongst the competitors. The event grew in size and stature, attracting competitors from as far afield as Rhodesia, Czechoslovakia, India, Sweden and Italy. In addition to the gruelling endurance events over the TT course, closed road racing was added by 1960, along with hill climbs, scrambling events and circuit racing. The Rally was also complemented by fun and games at Onchan Park alongside Concours D’Elegance competitions and glamour events such as the crowning of the Rally’s Scooter Girl. 8
It has to be said that female riders were also involved in the competitive events, one of the most successful being Elizabeth Smollen from Poland. In 1963, TT rider Eddie Crooks entered the fray in the year that his wife Pauline was crowned Scooter Girl. In 1965, Vespa and Lambretta returned to the fold, leading to a record number of competitors and spectators, including an elevenstrong team from Sweden. The event was cancelled in 1966 due to the seamen’s strike, but was back in ‘67 with Geoff Duke waving off the Manx 400 event around the TT course, and the instigation of a night trial and the Ramsey Sprint along the promenade. The peak of the event’s popularity was 1968, with the sand racing on Douglas beach attracting huge crowds. Major changes to the structure of the Rally took place in 1970 and in 1971, Bill Quayle, chairman of the IOM Tourist Board, declared the event as ‘the most important cog in the mosaic of Manx tourism,’ although the organisers of the TT may have disagreed! The turn of the decade saw the arrival of amateur teams that had tuned their own machines, increasing the stature of the out and out racing events, leading to fierce competition and accusations of ‘professionalism’ by some local competitors competing on stock machines. By 1973, records were being smashed and the Rally had now become a real speed event, with results now counting towards the Federation of British Scooter Clubs National Championships. Neville Frost smashed the six minute barrier for the Druidale circuit by nearly 11 seconds. As the popularity of scooters declined in the early 1970s, light motorcycles were invited to join the event in order to bolster the numbers in 1974. Unbeknown to competitors, the Rally held between the 11th and 18th September 1976 was to be their last. The Druidale circuit record was retained by a scooter, despite the introduction of motorcycles in 1974. The decision to end the event was taken later in the year, as it was decided to end the event on a high, despite a petition held by would-be competitors.

In 1981, following trouble at scooterist gatherings in the UK, the Isle of Man Executive Council called an emergency meeting and imposed a ban on scooters coming on to the Island, with the Steam Packet Company and Sealink being told not to embark any scooters without Manx registrations. The restrictions of visiting scooters, certainly in large groups, remained in force until 2002. The Isle of Man Scooter Rally has now been revived as a bi-annual social event, still drawing crowds of scooterists of all ages; long may it continue.

The Isle of Man TT course has been recognised as the sternest test for machine and rider in motorsport for more than one hundred years. Throughout this time the cream of British engineers and manufacturers have showcased their innovative work and proved its resilience. Our stamp issue focuses on these ground-breaking engines with the paintings of Graham Crowley in combination with archive imagery from Mortons Media. David Wright narrates the story…
AJS Supercharged V-four 500cc - 1939
Zenith Gradua Model C - 1920
By the mid-1930s, popular opinion was that the dominance of racing by single-cylinder machines would soon end and that the future lay with multi-cylinder racers. AJS produced a four-cylinder, supercharged, air-cooled V-four for 1936 and by 1939 had developed it into this water-cooled version that also came with plunger rear suspension. A fine piece of engineering which developed some 55bhp, it was handicapped by being the heaviest bike on the grids of the few events it contested.
The Zenith Gradua was an elegant model from the ‘flattank’ era of motorcycle design. Like the products of many small manufacturers, it was fitted with a JAP engine from London makers J.A. Prestwich. In this case it was their 654cc V-twin, side-valve unit. The term Gradua related to the fitment in Zenith early days of a form of belt-drive transmission that allowed variation in the gearing. This gave the marque an advantage over other makes that were generally fitted with a fixed gear. Zenith and JAP combined in later years to achieve competition success at Brooklands, and also broke the world’s outright motorcycle speed record at 150mph. Excelsior Manxman 500cc - 1936 Excelsior were strong supporters of racing in the 1930s and in the middle of the decade produced ‘Manxman’ models with 250, 350 and 500cc overhead camshaft engines, for use on the track and as fast roadsters. As usual in racing, the company’s ‘works’ models were at the forefront of development and for 1936 the 500 shown here came with redesigned valve-gear incorporating a four-valve layout driven by the marque’s customary vertical shaft and bevels, and utilising twin exhaust ports. It was built in very small numbers, although production ‘Manxman’ racers were plentiful and were still being used into the early 1950s. Douglas Twin - 1937 A flat twin-cylinder engine mounted fore and aft in the frame, plus a large outside flywheel, were distinguishing features of Douglas motorcycles for some 30 years. They helped to earn the company success on road and track, including a double Isle of Man TT victory in 1923 in both solo and sidecar classes. This 600cc model of 1937 was of conventional design for its time, with rigid frame, girder front-forks, drum brakes and four-speed gearbox. It appeared towards the end of production of the fore and aft engine, which was replaced by an across the frame flat twin power unit of more modern design.
Thoughts of a post-war racing future for the AJS-four were hit by the decision of the International Motorcycling Federation to ban supercharging in 1946. Vincent HRD 1000cc - 1949 In the late 1940s, the man who wanted the world’s fastest motorcycle chose a 1000cc twin-cylinder Vincent ‘Rapide’ or ‘Black Shadow.’ Exceptionally well-engineered, with many individual design features, the ‘Rapide’ delivered 45bhp and the slightly higher-tuned ‘Black Shadow’ gave 55bhp. Capable of prodigious mileage, the handsome V-twin alloy engine was also responsive to further tuning and was used for speed record-breaking, sprinting and racing. Vincent’s engineering excellence came at a price, with their Twins costing almost twice as much as a big Triumph or Norton in 1949. With production costs increasing in the early 1950s and demand falling, Vincent Engineers (Stevenage) Ltd ceased building motorcycles at the end of 1955. Norton ‘Manx’ 40M - 1961 A true icon from the world of motorcycle racing, the ‘Manx’ model derived from Norton’s first single-cylinder, overhead camshaft engines of the late 1920s. Powering racers in 350 and 500cc forms, they were painstakingly developed down the years to provide advancements such as increased power, better handling and improved braking and were at the forefront of world racing for several decades. Eventually outpaced by multi-cylinder machines in the mid1950s, the ‘Manx’ continued to fill the majority of race grids, long after Norton ceased building it at the end of 1962. Today, the legend of the ‘Manx’ lives on in the many replica machines contesting the Classic racing scene.

ISLE OF MAN BANKNOTES Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to announce that we are now able to offer a highly sought after, mint and uncirculated collection of Isle of Man Banknotes. These are now available to purchase from us as a selected provider by the Isle of Man Treasury.
In 1961 the note issue licences of all the commercial banks on the Isle of Man were revoked in preparation for the introduction of the Isle of Man government’s own note issue. All commercial bank notes were withdrawn and cancelled, but given the exceptional and long experience of note issue on the Island, the Isle of Man Bank were subsequently appointed to manage the Manx government’s notes. Today the Isle of Man Bank continues to assist and advise the government’s Treasury on matters of note issue, including monitoring circulation, holding reserves, sorting notes for ATMs across the Island and destroying old and unfit notes. This is the first time that Isle of Man Banknotes have been made available for sale in a Mint condition from us. When you purchase a banknote, you can expect an uncirculated note, presented to you in a wallet to ensure you receive your purchase in the most pristine condition possible.
