SPECIA L Y EAR EN D EDITION!
Welcome to our Autumn 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends Firstly, a big thank you for your loyal support of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins during 2018, the Year of Our Island. As I look back over the year there have been so many highlights, it has reminded me of what a real honour and pleasure it is to work on such an eclectic mix of topics and also the paths we cross to bring our collections to fruition. Without so many people making a positive contribution to all that we do, we would not be able to share with our friends and collectors worldwide (oh, and the International Space Station) the centuries of heritage, culture and reach of our island nation. I hope you will enjoy filling your album pages and reviewing the Isle of Man additions to your collection this year: it has been our pleasure to serve you and we look forward to our continuing friendship as we head into the last year of the current decade – my goodness doesn’t seem that long since we released
our Millennium Midnight stamps which coincidently is where the seeds were sown for the recent 2001: A Space Odyssey issue. On behalf of all of my staff in Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, I would like to convey “All Good Wishes” to you, your family and friends. With best wishes
Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
ISLE OF MAN LETTER WRITING TALENT RECOGNISED In July 2018, twelve year old Blake Henwood, of QEII School in Peel was named as the Isle of Man’s representative for the Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for young people for 2018. Blake’s handwritten letter was selected from entries received from children and young people across the Island. The competition was organised as a collaboration between Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO), Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) and Cabinet Office as part of Year of Our Island. The competition ran from 19th February to 31st March and was open to all Island primary and secondary school children up to age fifteen. The theme for this year’s competition was “Imagine you are a letter travelling through time. What message do you wish to convey to your readers?”
2
Graham Cregeen MHK, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture said, “The Department was delighted to assist Isle of Man Post Office and Year of our Island with the organisation of this international competition. The standard of the entries, in both primary and secondary, were excellent and showed a real knowledge of our Island and its heritage through the themes the children had chosen for their letters.”
A SURPRISE VISITOR WELCOMED FROM CANADA! Isle of Man Stamps & Coins got a surprise knock on the door in August when a collector from Canada arrived to say “Hello”. Tony Gariano from Ottawa has been a collector of our stamps since the early 1970’s - his collecting speciality – genuine franked mail. We were his 79th country to visit, and we ensured he got to experience life at the post office by giving him a tour and inviting him to hand postmark his own items. He was surprised to learn that the stamps were actually printed in his home city! Thank you Tony for coming to see us, it was great to meet you!
News Highlights ‘THERE BUT NOT THERE’ SERVICE TO REMEMBER THE FALLEN SOLDIERS OF WW1 On Saturday 4th August 2018, a commemoration exactly 104 years after the outbreak of the Great War took place at the Manx Aviation and Military Museum in Ballasalla and was attended by family members whose relatives are featured on The ANZAC Memorials of Rayner Hoff stamp collection from Isle of Man Post Office. Starting proceedings was Isle of Man Stamps and Coins General Manager Maxine Cannon who described the background of Manx born sculptor Rayner Hoff and the project to celebrate his work on a collection of stamps, which involved a collaboration between Isle of Man Post Office’s Paul Ford, and Deborah Beck and Louise Cornwall, who are both based in Sydney, Australia. A simple service of Remembrance took place and Ivor Ramsden of the Museum shared his research into the fate of each soldier, followed by WWII veteran Hector Duff recounting his visit to the ANZAC cemeteries. Garry Hilton of the Isle of Man Post Office Southern Delivery Office recited from a book of Manx poetry entitled “Longing for Home”. On display around the museum garden sat a number of silhouettes of WWI soldiers, each bearing the ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE PRESENTS MIKE HAILWOOD’S WIFE PAULINE WITH COMMEMORATIVE COIN PACK In August, Isle of Man Post Office Chairman Julie Edge MHK was thrilled to present Pauline Hailwood with numbers 40 and 60 from a limited number of only 500 commemorative coin packs when she visited the Island for the Classic TT. The Commemorative Coin Pack was issued to mark sixty years since fan favourite Mike Hailwood first raced at the Isle of Man TT and forty years since he returned to the event. To mark this special year for motorsport, the Isle of Man Treasury with the support of the Mike Hailwood Foundation officially licensed two new

The figures, made from perspex and therefore transparent, have an ethereal, almost ghostly appearance, which remind us that although these men are long dead, their memories are kept alive by us today. The service concluded at 11am with the Exhortation and Last Post played by young musician Ashley Cole of Rushen Silver Band, finishing with the Manx national anthem.
Brilliant Uncirculated £2 coins, each making reference to Mike Hailwood’s legendary Ducati. Upon hearing the news, Pauline Hailwood said ‘I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Isle of Man Government for celebrating Mike’s special anniversary at this year’s ‘Classic’ TT. Also for honouring him with the production of two specially minted coins to mark the event, he would be so pleased. The coin packs are a beautiful memento of the occasion, which I am sure, will be very popular with Mike’s fans’

News Highlights ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE RECREATES HISTORY WITH ‘MAIL ON THE RAILS’ On Tuesday 4th September, a very special reenactment of ‘Mail on the Rails’ took place as part of the celebrations for the Manx Electric Railway’s (MER) 125th Anniversary. The re-enactment saw recently restored mail van 4 leave Ramsey at 1.50pm, full of enthusiasts and stop at each of the nine letterboxes at the trackside. A fully uniformed postman then cleared the box prior to moving on to the next box, ending at Derby Castle. Passengers were presented with special MER postcards and invited to post their items. A special postmark was designed specifically for the occasion. For many this was a ‘once in a lifetime’ event. In the run up to the event Andy Perry, Northern Delivery Office Manager for Isle of Man Post Office commented ‘Mail on the Rails is such a significant

part of the history of the Isle of Man Post Office, so to be able to re-create it in partnership with Isle of Man Transport as part of the MER’s 125th anniversary is fantastic. I hope that those who take part get to experience something special’.
On Friday 7th September we were delighted to support the Isle of Man Film Festival which saw a special 4K presentation of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a result of our recent stamp collection. Katharina Kubrick, daughter of the late Stanley Kubrick, was welcomed to the Island especially for the occasion where she conducted a Q and A session with film critic Mark Kermode and accepted a special framed set of our 2001: A Space Odyssey collection. Chris Stott of ManSat, Ben Glazier who designed the 2001 stamps, and Howard Parkin, Astronomer to Isle of Man Government also attended. Maxine Cannon gave a moving speech about Chris Stott of ManSat and presented him with a special frame.
‘THE LIFE OF A SCULPTOR’ DEBORAH BECK’S VISIT TO THE ISLE OF MAN On Wednesday 19th September, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, in partnership with Manx National Heritage, welcomed author Deborah Beck to the Island to conduct a lecture on the life of Rayner Hoff at the Manx Museum. The lecture explored Hoff’s eventful life, his meteoric rise as a prominent star of the art world in Sydney and explain why this talented sculptor left the UK to move to Australia in 1923. The lecture was a result of our recent stamp collection ‘The ANZAC Memorials of Rayner Hoff’ 4
which was a collection issued to mark the centenary of the end of World War I, and for which Beck wrote the issue text and contributed images.
Pictured is Deborah with the issue.
VISIT FROM JAY COVER We were thrilled that whilst visiting family for the weekend, Jay Cover, the Manx born designer behind our Manx Folk Traditions collection took the time to pop in to see us and view the stamps he designed in the flesh for the first time! Jay brought his family, including his very proud Mum, brother and sister along who were thrilled that Jay has created his very own Manx stamp collection.
A VISIT FROM THE LORD BISHOP OF SODOR AND MAN In September we were honoured to welcome The Rt Rev Peter Andrew Eagles, The Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man. Bishop Peter had requested the visit so he could learn more about our day-to-day activities and the challenges we face as a postal business. During his visit he met with members of the Executive Team, received a talk from Maxine Cannon, General Manager of Stamps & Coins and undertook tours of Douglas Mail Centre, Customer Services and IMS. To provide him with a meaningful token of our appreciation for his time in coming to see us, we produced a thank you card which was designed in our Stamps & Coins division featuring the Lewis Chessmen stamp issue. This was a particularly interesting issue to highlight as it had been a collaborative project with Government, had been printed by IMS and was handwritten to remind people about the pleasures of letter writing.
ISLE OF MAN PHILATELIC FEDERATION CONVENTION On Saturday 6th October the Isle of Man Philatelic Federation held its annual convention at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas followed by their annual prize presentation. Maxine Cannon had the pleasure of presenting the competition winners with their trophies, which included one in memory of former Stamps and Coins Manager Stuart Slack who ended his Isle of Man Post Office career as Chief Executive Officer. Presentations were also made to Alan Clucas (now Sub Postmaster at Pulrose) and Kevin Stannard, both former managers of Stamps and Coins and long-time employees of Isle of Man Post Office. 5

In memory of Michael Noakes 1933 - 2018 The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to present this set of six stamps featuring the work of four eminent portrait artists of our time who have painted HRH Prince Charles. We are indebted to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters for their help in compiling material as we celebrate the 70th birthday of the Prince. 2018 also sees the 60th anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II conferring on Prince Charles the title Prince of Wales on 26th July 1958, some six years after he became the heir apparent. The 14th November 2018 marks the 70th birthday of His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Charles was born at Buckingham Palace in 1948 and is heir apparent to the British throne. As such he holds many titles, including Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Earl of Chester, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. He is father to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry of Wales.
His Royal Highness has achieved great recognition as an environmentalist, for his views on the dangers facing our planet from climate change, as a proponent of organic farming and as a regular commentator on architecture and building conservation. Through many years of service to our great nation and the nations of the Commonwealth, Prince Charles has consistently acted as a humanitarian, with his tireless support of countless charities as well as The Prince’s Trust and the sixteen other charities he has started. He will take over as head of the Commonwealth when Her Majesty the Queen leaves the role. As well as being a champion of many arts charities and organisations, His Royal Highness is an accomplished watercolour artist and has published several books on the subject.

OUR SIX STAMPS We have chosen to represent His Royal Highness through portraiture. The paintings have been created by a variety of artists. Richard Stone 52p and £1.01 The son of a Colchester postman, Richard Stone has painted portraits of the Royal family for most of his career. Although he has had little formal art training, Richard’s success is a direct result of a natural talent and a strong determination to succeed in the career he has pursued since childhood. Alongside the royal commissions, other commissions include Baroness Thatcher, Dame Joan Sutherland and an official portrait of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. David Griffiths 83p David Griffiths was born in Liverpool in 1939 and brought up in north Wales. His artistic talent can be traced back to his grandfather, also a portrait painter, whose portrait of Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone hung in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery in 1889. David attended the Slade School of Fine Art and has oil paintings in many university and gallery collections, but it is his painting of Prince Charles on his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969 that is perhaps his best known.
June Mendoza £1.25 and £1.75 June Mendoza is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. She started life classes at the age of fourteen and by seventeen was working as an artist producing book jackets, magazine illustrations and some portraits. Her commissioned work includes a number of portraits of the Queen and members of the Royal family, foreign dignitaries and a wide range of portraits of personalities from the arts, music, government, business and the professions. Michael Noakes £2.42 During his eminent career Michael has been President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Chairman of the Contemporary Portrait Society and Governor of the Federation of British Artists. His portraits are held in collections all over the world and his subjects include actors, royalty, presidents and prime ministers. He was working on the portrait of the Prince of Wales for the King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles when he ran out of paper. The Prince handed him a sheet of memorandum paper so he could continue his series of studies. Once the portrait was completed, Michael gave this sketch to the Prince’s batman.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this gleaming set of six stamps to highlight a selection of the Island’s traditional folk customs that still form a part of the lives of the Manx today. Valerie Caine writes… Manx folk traditions have been recorded by both local and visiting collectors, including scholars of international reputation, and although some traditions may well have fallen by the wayside, several continue to be practised, or revived. You’ll find tangible links with our close neighbours, who have influenced the Island’s folklore and traditional beliefs through migration, evolving into a unique blend of Celtic, Norse, Scottish and English celebrations. Historically crofting and fishing provided employment for many Manx people, but the work could be strenuous and un-abating. It was a difficult life, with little time for leisure, so these spasmodic celebrations were a welcome distraction from daily demands. Celebrating the melliah is typically found elsewhere, but on the Isle of Man it can be traced back to the goddess Luan - the spirit of the corn. Its meaning has changed over time, but many associate the word with the last sheaf to be cut, decorated with ribbons and presented to the Queen of the Melliah; or the baban ny melliah (doll of the harvest) which sat on the farmhouse kitchen chimney-piece. In recent times the word melliah has become associated with a harvest supper and auction of produce.

Hop tu Naa, (old style New Year’s Eve) is a pumpkin free zone, with locals favouring the turnip. Divination was widely practised, with particular emphasis on how womenfolk may discover the name of the man they would marry. The dumb cake (Soddag Valloo), which consisted of some unlikely ingredients such as egg shells and soot, was prominent. Each woman helped to mix the cake, and when baked and eaten would retire to bed backwards without speaking, hoping to see the image of their future spouse overnight. Also known as Oie Houney (Hollantide Eve) youngsters would have fun with simple games, the more mischievous disturbing their neighbours by banging on doors with hard-hearted cabbage heads! And then there’s the mysterious figure of Jinny the Witch, who flies over the house but once a year, with variations of a curious rhyme in her wake. Despite its connotations, Hunt the Wren is another tradition which has remained popular across the Island. Originally they were hunted down, killed, and fastened to a pole, before processing in the neighbourhood, their feathers thought to ward off evil in the coming year. It’s staunchly linked to St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day) but nowadays revellers use an imitation bird and sell coloured ribbons to those they meet en route.
A
Celebrations for New Year’s Eve tend to merge with the first day of the new year, but it was important to abide by a few rules if you wanted peace of mind. You might be woken by a local fiddler, bringing good cheer, but ill luck would attend anyone meeting a cat first thing in the morning and you would be advised not to lend anything on this day, for fear of doing so all year. The curious housewife would rake the fire and spread the ashes across the floor and in the morning look for a mysterious footprint. A death in the family during the year was indicated if the toes pointed towards the door, and a new arrival if they were turned towards the fire. But perhaps the most popular visitor to any household would be the quaaltagh, or first-footer in Scotland, who would bring gifts to a welcoming household and receive food and drink in return. Although descriptions might vary across the Island, it was considered that the quaaltagh should be a dark-haired man who was not splay-footed.
But there was something magical about the eve of old Christmas Day when the bees were said to emerge from their hives at midnight, bullocks fall down on their knees in unison and the myrrh (Sweet Cicely) is reported to come into bloom. Manx collector, Dr Clague, cast a more practical eye upon such wonders, but what better way to enjoy this time of year than believing in miracles.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to celebrate this significant anniversary by offering a bird’s eye view of these most familiar Island landmarks in a set of four panoramic stamps utilising drone aerial photography.
Manx historian Charles Guard writes… This year, 2018 sees the 200th anniversary of the first permanent lighthouses on the Isle of Man and they are marvels of Georgian technology. Situated in the middle of the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man presented a serious hazard to 18th century ships trading between Ireland, Scotland and England; with no lights to mark its treacherous coast at night it was the scene of countless shipwrecks. Merchants from the surrounding ports petitioned the authorities on numerous occasions and eventually, in 1815, an Act of Parliament opened the way for the construction of three lights on the Island: one at its northern tip, the Point of Ayre, and two on the Calf of Man, a small island off its south-western tip. The lights were constructed and operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board, based in Edinburgh, under one of the greatest civil engineers of the age, Robert Stevenson, their Chief Engineer. The task was fraught with difficulties. The Point of Ayre was remote; there were no roads to it in 1816 and the site of the light tower was bordered by a huge shingle bank that was slowly shifting to the south east.
The Calf of Man was also remote and its situation wasn’t helped by the activities of its tenant who didn’t want the lighthouses built. He sabotaged construction, stole supplies, and generally made the job more difficult than it already was. Nevertheless, Stevenson managed to construct two magnificent lights on the Calf, each with their keepers’ houses and enclosures. The reason for two lights was most ingenious. Just off the towering cliffs of the Calf is a reef called the Chickens’ Rock, which lurks below the surface at high tide. It was impossible to see and many ships were wrecked on it. However, the two lights were built directly in line with the reef, and as ships passed, and the lights appeared directly above each other, mariners knew the reef’s location and could safely avoid it. The large houses for the keepers and their families were superbly built with cellars to store the lamp oil, coal bunkers, water butts, kitchen ranges and everything the occupants would need in such remote locations. Stevenson decorated the light towers with dolphins, the Three Legs of Man and other motifs, discreetly incorporated into the ironwork around the light chamber windows. Each tower was crowned with a magnificent copper cupola, the top of which formed a ball with sculpted copper flames. In fact, these were hidden chimneys through which the hot air from the burning lamps below could escape. Today, the lights on the Calf lie in ruins. In the 1870s a rock light tower was built on the Chickens to mark it, and the Calf lights were switched off. The light at the Point of Ayre, though, is still in operation, though it was automated in 1993. It has its original Fresnel lens from 1890 and it exhibits four flashes of white every twenty seconds. The tower now has a distinctive daymark of two red bands and is one of the iconic buildings of the Isle of Man.

ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THIS FESTIVE FUN-FILLED SET OF STAMPS TO CELEBRATE EIGHTY YEARS OF BEANO, THE WORLD’S LONGEST-RUNNING AND MOST-LOVED COMIC. EIGHTY YEARS OF FUN When work started on Beano back in 1937, the team had no idea they were creating a British pop culture icon. Now in its 80th year, Beano is officially recognised as the world’s longestrunning weekly comic, and has been delighting children – of all ages - for generations! Beano has also had a wider cultural impact, whether reassuring children in the face of the enemy and their worst fears during the Second World War, or introducing its most famous son, Dennis, as a rebellious icon. Above everything else, Beano is recognised as a great British institution of fun.
A Beano Christmas on the Isle of Man Our Christmas story sees Dennis, Gnasher and friends on the Isle of Man raising a laugh and causing mischief while helping the Manx mail reach Beanotown and all destinations worldwide. The moral of the tale is that writing to friends and family by post is still the best way to catch up at Christmas, or share good wishes at any time of the year!
Dreaming of a Write Christmas Christmas is the most wonderful time of year in Beanotown, so Dennis and Gnasher are grumpier than Scrooge when Mum reveals that they’re heading to the Isle of Man for a festive visit to a mysterious uncle with a shocking secret… He’s a postman – one of Gnasher’s most fearsome foes!
12
Just when Dennis thinks things can’t get any worse, a basking Megalodon munches the family’s mobile phones. Humbug! He’s now ‘marooned’ on an island, with no way of communicating with his mischievous mates; Christmas 2018 is cancelled. That’s when Uncle Paul reveals a secret way to message mates to his nephew. He explains how writing a letter or a postcard, sticking a stamp on it, then posting it is like sending an epic text message, only it’s delivered by your own postie ‘butler’. Even cooler, Paul arranges for the stamps to be amazing, funny scenes of Dennis running riot having fun on the Island. Not only do his friends write back, but they promise to meet together on what’s quickly become the Christmas Isle of Mischief, to share the festive fun. So be inspired by Dennis trying something different to bring a smile to friends and family. This year, let’s make sure everyone’s dreaming of a ‘Write Christmas’!
The Stamps • Dennis and Gnasher completing a ‘snowcastle’ version of the Tower of Refuge while a scarylooking Viking prepares to chuck a snowball. • Dennis and Gnasher, having painted their kartie/ sled with Isle of Man Post Office livery, have Paul the Postman tied up in a sack as they throw presents to all while they race down Tynwald Hill. • At a snowy Douglas Sea Terminal Gnasher is trying to grab at the non-existent tail of a Manx cat who is teasing him with a sausage-shaped Christmas gift. Behind Gnasher is the famous four-horned Loaghtan sheep, trying to ‘spike’ Gnasher!
• At the old Marine Drive toll gate Santa, squashed into his tiny Peel P50 car, pursues Dennis and Gnasher in their menacing sidecar and, unseen by Gnasher, a Manx cat joins in the fun on his sled. • Santa and his reindeers find flying conditions difficult as Dennis turns the world’s largest waterwheel at Laxey into a snowball chucking machine! • At Castle Rushen the Beano gang assemble for their surprise Christmas party proving that sending out invitations by post gets results.
• The IOM Steam Railway Christmas train has been Beano-ed! Dennis reaching across to splat custard pie into Santa’s face! Gnasher’s face fronts the train ‘Thomas the Tank Engine style’. • Dennis and Gnasher and the Manx Minx fairies make light work of the letters to Beanotown allowing time for Paul the postman to put his feet up!
NIGEL PARKINSON IS A COMIC FAN WHO LIVES AND BREATHES THE ART FORM. HE IS ALSO THE MOST PROLIFIC BEANO CARTOONIST WORKING TODAY. PARKINSON, A LIVERPUDLIAN, HAS BEEN DRAWING DENNIS SINCE 1999 AS ONE OF A SELECT BAND OF ARTISTS. NIGEL ENSURES THE IMAGE OF DENNIS AND GNASHER IS ALWAYS CONSISTENTLY REBELLIOUS — ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT NOW THEY ARE NOT ONLY A CARTOON STRIP BUT ALSO FEATURED IN ANIMATION, ADVERTISING, MARKETING AND MERCHANDISING AS WELL AS BEING STARS OF BEANO.COM THIS ARTIST ALSO ILLUSTRATES MINNIE THE MINX, BANANAMAN AND THE BASH STREET KIDS AND CAN SOMETIMES DRAW AS MANY AS 20 PAGES OF COMIC STRIPS IN A SINGLE WEEK. AS BEANO CONTINUES TO FLOURISH, PARKINSON HAS HAD A HUGE ARTISTIC HAND IN GRADUALLY MODERNISING ICONIC CHARACTERS WHILE KEEPING THEM INSTANTLY RECOGNISABLE TO EVERY GENERATION OF FAN. 13 13
