Welcome to our Autumn 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends, Welcome to our first newsletter of 2019, I hope the year will bring you lots of enjoyment particularly around your philatelic interests. A friend from the past has re-joined Isle of Man Stamps & Coins. Tracy Maddrell worked with me and Dot Tilbury way back in 2005 and is now our Assistant Product Developer. I found this photograph from one of my all- time favourite stamp issues “A Time to Remember”. Sadly a number of people are no longer with us but their stories are captured in time through the stamp issue and also a CD recording which we produced in association with Manx Radio. That’s one of the best things about stamps, they capture a moment in time that might otherwise be lost forever. That won’t be the case with my work friend and colleague Alan Gault who retired in January 2019 after almost 31 years’ service. Alan would be known to a great many of our friends around the world as he was the voice of the bureau in his role as Customer Services Officer and used to attend Stampex exhibitions. We will remember Alan with fondness and wish him and his family every happiness.

ISLE OF MAN, GIBRALTAR, GUERNSEY AND JERSEY ISSUE JOINT LIMITED EDITION WWI COMMEMORATIVE ENVELOPE The collaboration brings together one stamp from each of the postal administrations’ First World War issues released in recent times to commemorate 100 years of the Great War. The stamps, which are cancelled with the date 11.11.18, are affixed to a specially designed envelope entitled ‘Remembering the Sacrifices of our Men and Women in WWI – Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey Remembers’. A card inserted into the envelope tells the story of each of the stamps; Gibraltar Remembers: The Gibraltar War Memorial, Guernsey Remembers: Guernsey’s war-time volunteers, Isle of Man Remembers: The ANZAC Memorials of Rayner Hoff 2

The first voices of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins are now Tony, Carlo and Charlotte who has just joined the team, however if you feel you would like to speak to our product development team or myself directly please don’t hesitate to do so, it’s very important to me that we are looking after your needs at all times.

With sincere thanks and all good wishes to you and your family.

News Highlights MANX FOLK TRADITIONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT! It was a busy time over the Christmas period for celebrating Manx folk traditions, with a surge of interest this year, providing a boost for the occasions and ensuring these wonderful traditions are kept alive. St Stephen’s day saw local communities participating in ‘Hunt the Wren’, perhaps the most interesting of Manx traditions, come together to sing and dance around the streets. The practice, dating back to pre-Christian times, is centred on a wren, “the king of all birds,” which is hunted and then danced through the streets on a special pole (the bird in the wren pole used today is just a replica!). Image supplied by Culture Vannin

ISLE OF MAN REPRESENTED AT INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXPO SINDELFINGEN IN GERMANY The event took place from Thursday 25th – Saturday 27th October and is a large exhibition offering lectures, stamp exhibits and contact with collectors, dealers and postal administrations from around the world. Special thanks to Hermann E. Sieger GmH For flying the flag for the Isle of Man! We are also excited to be attending Spring Stampex from 13th -16th February at the Business Design Centre, Islington. We will be sharing stand number 78 with Anpost, Faroe Islands, Jersey and Guernsey so please pop by to say hello, there will be lots to see.

VISIT TO THE CALF OF MAN In October we were delighted to get the chance to visit Dan Woollard, Calf of Man Bird Observatory Warden along with Charles Guard, Broadcaster and Historian on the Calf of Man for what was a very special visit. Dan is the current Observatory Warden, living on the Calf for several months and being responsible for bird netting, trapping and ringing operations, bird recording and information dissemination. Charles Guard provided invaluable support to our Lighthouse 200 collection by providing background information and explaining the history of the Lighthouses on their 200th anniversary. Both took the time to sign a limited number of 200 covers, especially postmarked: “Carried to and from the Calf of Man from Port St. Mary 30th October 2018 on the Scraayl” These are now specially numbered and form a perfect addition to our existing collection. More information can be found on page 11. 3

ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS PLEASED TO PRESENT THIS SET OF FOUR STAMPS TO CELEBRATE THE CHINESE YEAR OF THE PIG WITH THE PAINTINGS OF ZHANG YONG. Zodiac signs play an integral part in Chinese culture, and can be used to determine your fortune for the year, marriage compatibility, career fit, best times to have a baby, and so much more. The zodiac cycle repeats every 12 years, making it easy to figure out whether it’s your year, just check if your age is a multiple of 12. The Pig is the twelfth of the 12 zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Pig was late because he overslept. Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off. When he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of fortune as well. Pigs also possess a beautiful personality and are blessed with good fortune in life. Recent years of the Pig are: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019. Paired with the Chinese Celestial Stems there is a 60-year calendrical cycle. The years also cycle through the five elements of nature: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The year 2019 brings together earth and Pig. According to the Chinese horoscope Pigs might not stand out in a crowd. But they are very realistic. Others may be all talk and no action. Pigs are the opposite. Though not wasteful spenders, they will let themselves enjoy life. They love entertainment and will occasionally treat themselves. They are a bit materialistic, but this is motivation for them to work hard. Being able to hold solid objects in their hands gives them security. 4

They are energetic and are always enthusiastic, even for boring jobs. If given the chance, they will take positions of power and status. They believe that only those people have the right to speak, and that’s what they want. Pigs born in 1959 and 2019 are thought to be social butterflies with friends from all walks of life. They have fortunate lives and can find happiness. They are successful later in life. However, it is said that they aren’t always known to be the most romantic people! THE TRADITION OFCHINESE NEW YEAR Chinese New Year is a festival (usually referred to as the Spring Festival in modern China) that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar and runs between the 5th and the 19th February 2019. Festivities traditionally take place from the evening preceding the first day of the year to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21st January and 20th February. It is one of the world’s most prominent and celebrated festivals, and is the cause of the largest annual mass human migration in the world. It is a major holiday in Greater China and has strongly influenced the lunar new year celebrations of China’s neighbouring cultures, including the Korean New Year, the Tết of Vietnam, and the Losar of Tibet and is celebrated worldwide in countries with significant overseas Chinese populations, including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Mauritius, as well as many countries in North America and Europe. We are pleased to work with The Naughton Group, a Hong Kong-based graphic design and marketing company which provides design services to a broad range of clients all over Asia.

he IsleThe of Man Office is very pleased to present collection of six stamps Isle Post of Man Post Office is pleased to this present this gleaming set to ofshowcase a selection of the in service on the Isle from the 1950s to the continuing six stamps tobuses highlight a selection of of theMan Island’s traditional folk1970s customs our ‘All Aboardthat Please!’ series of issues of 1999 and 2015. still form a part of the lives of the Manx today. Once more the images are specially commissioned from renowned motorsport and transport artist Peter Hearsey, while local historian and author Richard Davis provides expert commentary. This set features Manx buses from both the Douglas Corporation and Road Services fleets from the 1950s through to nationalisation in 1976 when the two fleets were amalgamated under government control as Isle of Man National Transport. Leyland Titan PD2 The first double-deckers with concealed radiators to enter the Road Services fleet were three PD2/22s in 1956. Although mechanically similar to previous PD2s acquired shortly after World War II, these differed in having lightweight bodywork and ‘tinfronts’ of a style used by BMMO in the UK. All three were withdrawn from service by the mid-1970s.

A EC R egent V Following on from the immediate post-war period, Douglas Corporation Transport continued to order additional new double-deckers from AEC (Associated Equipment Company) with four rear-entrance Regent Vs appearing in 1957. With a lightweight body and semi-automatic transmission these buses were quite lively performers.

A EC R eliance Douglas Corporation Transport was renowned for having unusual vehicles in their fleet. For example, two AEC Reliances 6

acquired new in 1958 were the only ones of their type to be

fitted with bodywork by Mulliner, perhaps better known as luxury car body builders. The Reliances continued in service until October 1976 when DCT was amalgamated with Isle of Man Road Services.

Leyland Leopar d In 1967 IOM Road Services ventured into coaching operations with three dual-purpose Leyland Leopards. Originally painted grey and red and fitted with coach seats, they were downgraded to service bus status and adopted red and cream livery when the company gave up its coaching interests. The bus illustrated operated on the Island for 19 years and was the last bus in the fleet with a manual gearbox.

Leyland National The first Leyland National in the Road Services fleet appeared in 1974. At 11.3 metres long and with a turbo-charged rear engine and integral construction, it was

a radical departure from anything seen previously. Six further examples followed in 1975 and another seven in 1976, becoming the last buses delivered to IOM Road Services. The first one, MN 9514, was subsequently re-registered MAN 14A to match similar vehicles in the fleet.

Bedfor d Y RQ The final bus acquired by Douglas Corporation Transport was a Bedford YRQ which entered the fleet in 1975 and was therefore just a year old when the Douglas undertaking was amalgamated and nationalised. All the surviving yellow buses that continued in service were quickly repainted into National Transport red and white though, like the Bedford shown here, many were little-used before being sold to UK buyers.

R I C H A R D DAV I S Richard was born in Douglas in 1946 and still lives on the Island. Retired after 30 years’ service in the Isle of Man Constabulary, Richard is a well-known author and historian having published seven books relating to the Island’s history and buses: Buses of the Isle of Man 1945 – the Present Day, Douglas Corporation Transport Buses – Centenary Edition, Isle of Man Road Services Buses and four volumes of Those Were the Days. When not researching or writing books, Richard spends time restoring and displaying his vintage buses at transport events in the UK and Ireland.

PET ER HEA RSEY Peter was born in London where, after leaving art school, he worked in advertising for several years before moving to the Island in 1977. He is an elected member of the Automotive Fine Arts Society in the USA and his paintings and etchings of historic motor racing scenes are collected worldwide. Since working on the first “All Aboard Please!” stamp issue in 1999 he has produced the artwork for various other stamp issues and has enjoyed working with Richard Davis on this latest set.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this issue of ten stamps to showcase the diversity of wildlife to be found, by the patient and observant, in the small but richly-varied landscape of the Isle of Man. In addition to enjoying the visual beauty of the images by Manx photographer Brian Liggins, we are mindful that this diversity in such a small area also raises interesting ecological issues… LAURA MCCOY, CURATOR OF NATURAL HISTORY, MANX NATIONAL HERITAGE WRITES… The landscape of the Isle of Man has changed since it separated from the UK around 8,500 years ago. Surrounded by the Irish Sea, the Island is influenced by all its nearest neighbours, and yet is unique in its composition of wildlife, making it something to be treasured and protected. Islands can be hugely important in terms of supporting rare species and serve as refuges, but their sensitivity to environmental impacts increases the smaller they are. The continued presence of rarities like hen harriers, lesser-mottled grasshoppers and the greater butterfly orchid is by no means guaranteed, and government agencies and wildlife groups manage and monitor the Manx countryside to support them. Alien species, such as wallabies and harlequin ladybirds, compete with indigenous wildlife, impacting biodiversity and food chains. We are seeing more attention being given to curbing the spread of

“I enjoy the challenge of taking pictures of wildlife as it is always on the move so you have to be ready and focused to capture the moment. I spend hours waiting and trying to get the right shot. I travel all over the Island to picture different species. The light plays a big part in capturing the perfect image.”

Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam and hope to have these tenacious plants eradicated in the coming years. We are also lucky enough to have a population of honey bees that, unlike many places in the world, have so far avoided being infected by invasive varroa mites because of the continued vigilance of the beekeeping community. Numerous areas are managed for wildlife on the Island, such as the Ayres, Cooildarry and Ballaugh Curragh, plus more than ten percent of our territorial waters are marine nature reserves. There are many instances where the local community can help keep our Island a beautiful place to live and work, such as not disturbing ground-nesting birds, picking up dog waste, buying local produce and not dropping litter; we have already seen the huge impact that beach-cleans can have and the work does not stop there; helping experts monitor local wildlife at coordinated events can also feed into long term scientific studies.
