Welcome to our Autumn 2019 Newsletter Dear Friends And so we come to the final newsletter of 2019, goodness what a year; so much has happened since our first issue, The Year of the Pig, back in January. Each year I lay out the stamps onto our Lindner pages and reflect on how many people are involved with each collection and then the reach of the stamp around the world on posted items and in collections. It makes me feel very proud to be part of something where you have the joy of working and bringing pleasure to people such as yourselves. In this spirit I am delighted to announce that at the end of November our standing order collectors and collectors who have ordered all of our 2019 issues will receive a complimentary collectors sheetlet titled “Steam Trains”. The sheetlet is a mark of our appreciation of your loyal support. We intend to produce a sheetlet with a different topic each year, which will hopefully build into a very nice topical series, each housed in a beautifully presented
pictorial folder. We aim to deliver your first Christmas present and Christmas card with your special sheetlet on the issue day, 20th November 2019. Please drop me a line if someone gets there before us! On behalf of all the staff who work in Isle of Man Stamps & Coins I would like to extend to you and your family all good wishes for the festive season and happiness in 2020.
Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
CURTISS NC-4 PRESENTATION BOARD VISITS THE EXHIBIT IN FLORIDA! We were thrilled that our stamp presentation board illustrating the Curtiss NC-4 from our recent 100 Years of Transatlantic Aviation issue made its way all the way to Florida to visit the Naval Aviation Museum where the original Navy flying boat is preserved. Pictured here is Museum Director Captain Sterling Gilliam and Museum Foundation President & CEO General Duane Thiessen next to the Museum’s NC-4 exhibit.
RESTORATION OF THE AMY JOHNSON PLAQUE On Tuesday 24th September, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture Geoffrey Boot MHK and Stamps & Coins General Manager Maxine Cannon met in Glen Helen for the unveiling of a new plaque in honour of Amy Johnson. Amy Johnson was a world-renowned woman aviator who broke a number of flying records and was the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia. She planted a tree in Glen Helen when she visited the Isle of Man in April 1933. We recently paid tribute to Amy in our 100 Years of Transatlantic Flight issue on which her name is featured on the £2.55 value stamp. 2

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to showcase the illustrious career of the Manx engineer who made momentous contributions to the development of twentieth century telecommunications worldwide and who put in place the foundations of the BBC. Frank Gill, born in Castletown in 1866, was a global visionary telecommunications engineer. Trained at various companies in London, Ireland and Lancashire, in 1890 he became the chief electrician to the Liverpool District of the National Telephone Company. Here he installed the first UK automatic junction signalling equipment and was responsible for the first very large metallic circuit exchange equipment. Frank was appointed District Manager for Dublin and the South of Ireland in 1893, quickly becoming the Superintendent of Ireland in 1896. Here he supervised the designs of the new Dublin Exchange, built in 1897, and the new Belfast Exchange, constructed a few years later. By 1902 he was appointed Engineer in Chief, where he controlled UK-wide engineering work including central battery exchanges. This included nineteen exchanges in London, five in Liverpool, four in Glasgow, four in Manchester, five in Birmingham and twenty more in other towns with thirty specially designed buildings. Frank controlled £12.2m of capital and revenue expenditure and introduced 2500 miles of circuits. Following UK telephone nationalisation in 1912, Frank set up Gill and Cook Consulting Telephone Engineers, with his deputy engineer. They were very successful, working in Argentina, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Malay States, Portugal and Turkey. During WW1 Frank voluntarily became a Comptroller General at the Ministry of Munitions where he gained the OBE for his services. In 1919 he became the European chief engineer of the International Western Electric Company. By 1922 6
wireless telegraphy was developing rapidly and, fearing similar nationalisation seen with telephones ten years earlier, 23 equipment manufacturers met to agree a way forward to develop broadcasting (also called wireless telephony) throughout the UK. They met at the Institution of Electrical Engineers in London under the chairmanship of the newly elected Institution President Frank Gill, where all agreed to use a smaller committee called the ‘Big Six’ comprising Marconi, General Electric, British Thomson-Houston, Metropolitan Vickers, the Radio Communication Company and Western Electric. The Post Offices specified the Burndept Company should join to represent the smaller partners. They met again on the 25th May and Frank ensured they discussed key matters including patents, company name, revenue and licencing fees. Frank insisted this must become a single company, but Marconi and Metropolitan Vickers did not agree. Before a meeting on the 8th August 1922 Frank pleaded with them and the dissenters finally agreed to his request. The Big Six agreed the new organisation would be called the British Broadcasting Company (the BBC). Objective achieved, Frank withdrew as chairman to take up work with America and was replaced by Sir William Noble, who completed the structure already agreed by the Big Six with Frank.
In November 1922 at his Institution of Electrical Engineers Presidential Address (later quoted as “the greatest paper on telecommunications of the 20th century”) Frank outlined far-reaching proposals for world-wide telephone equipment, standards and cooperation. He concluded: “…In the telephone we have the most perfect means of communication... we shall be making a definite step towards… increasing the good-will without which there cannot be peace on Earth.” January 1923 saw Frank organise the first transatlantic radio telephone link between his London office and AT&T in New York. In 1924 Frank promoted the formation of the vital International Consultative
Committee for Long-Distance Telephony (CCIF). By 1925 he was a Vice President at Compania Telefonica Nacional de Espana in Spain. In 1927 King George V permitted Frank to wear The Order of Isabel the Catholic, awarded by King Alfonso XIII of Spain in recognition of his work. The 1941 Birthday Honours List detailed Sir Frank Gill’s knighthood “for services rendered in the development of the telephone industry and international telephony”. Sir Frank remained active and prominent within the profession and was attending a communications conference in Geneva when he was suddenly taken ill and died on the 25th October 1950. A

Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this joyful delivery of ten beautiful and diverse greeting cards as our festive stamp set for Christmas. The set celebrates the centenary of the Greeting Card Association and we are delighted to have been able to collaborate with the GCA and industryleader Geoff Sanderson to mark the occasion and showcase the range of the membership’s work. Creative Consultant Geoff Sanderson writes… I was honoured to be asked to curate the cards used in this very special collection of stamps on behalf of the Greeting Card Association (GCA). The designs chosen evoke the spirit of the season, whilst featuring beautiful artwork from some of our leading artists and illustrators - showcasing the work of the publishers that the GCA supports. After training as an illustrator, and not fitting into the 80s advertising world, I decided to follow my true star; I answered a small ad looking for a greeting card designer; a career as a creative director in the greeting card industry followed and is now thirty winters old. Starting in a design studio in Burton-on-Trent it has since taken me all around the world from Kansas City to Tokyo and back. Along the way I’ve designed and managed ranges for many UK retailers including Marks & Spencer, the global greetings publisher Hallmark and most recently developed personalised cards for the print-on-demand retailer moonpig.com.
Encouragingly, the card sending habit remains strong and we are spending more on cards for close family and friends, with 18-34 year olds sending more cards than a generation ago. Despite all the online options available, around 94% of sales still come from individuals going out to the shops to buy their cards. Greeting cards are also a leading component of the British creative industry, where we lead the world in innovative design and export our cards globally. It is also an important employer of creative talent, with the industry directly employing over 100,000 designers, illustrators and other creatives, with many more employed indirectly working as freelance or self-employed. The industry also inspires business growth, with many a creative visionary forming their own publishing business. The card industry is also an essential feeder into employment for hundreds of graduates from the UK’s universities each year, via graduate design sponsorship, competitions and work placements.
To be inspired to evoke the magic, excitement and spirit of Christmas in the height of summer is never an easy thing to do; but it’s something that the writers, designers and artists of the greeting card industry happily do every year and Christmas is a special as well as a sacred time for many, and the Christmas card is a good and tangible way of keeping in it is when most cards are created.Typically the Christmas touch as well as sharing the joy, and means much more than range development process lasts twelve months; and ubiquitous social media messages which are sent all the time. the cards are published just in time to annoy all those who like to moan that Christmas comes Christmas cards also send a warming festive factor to the earlier and earlier every year - but not UK economy. We send over 96 million single Christmas me I can’t get enough of Christmas. cards a year, at an average price point of £1.92, and the I hope you enjoy these lovely stamps... market is worth nearly £185m. In addition we spend an additional £230m on boxed or packed Christmas cards – another 900 million Christmas cards. Christmas cards are 12% of the £1.7Bn total UK card market.

The Greeting Card Association is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The voice of the British greeting card industry, the GCA is an independent trade organisation, wholly owned by its members - greeting card publishers, retailers and manufacturers. The British are the most prolific card-sending nation in world, spending £1.7 billion a year on greeting cards. The UK also leads the world in greeting card design and innovation which sees millions of UK cards exported all over the globe. The GCA represents the industry to the media, government, education, Royal Mail, and other bodies as well as providing specialist help and advice for greeting card businesses. The first commercial Christmas card was sent in 1843, pioneered by Sir Henry Cole a Victorian philanthropist who also worked with Sir Rowland Hill to establish the Penny Post, which was instrumental in the card sending
habit extending to all occasions. Cards were so important for keeping people in touch during WW1 that in 1939, when WW2 saw the banning of the production of greeting cards to conserve paper, the GCA contacted Lord Beaverbook on the grounds that the morale of the fighting forces and the general public would be undermined by the ban. The Minister agreed and a Government statement was issued rescinding the ban and stating:“Greeting cards are considered essential to the war effort”. With scientific evidence proving that receiving greeting cards improves mental health and well-being, greeting cards continue to be the preferred choice to express sentiment to someone important. And with 18-24 year olds now sending more cards than a generation ago the great British tradition of card sending is set to continue. www.greetingcardassociation.org.uk

Q & A with Maxine Cannon During a recent visit to the Island our very good friend, and lifelong Isle of Man collector, Stuart from Fleetwood, asked me to answer a few questions which he thought other collectors may find interesting. I was only too happy to oblige. How do you decide on the cost of stamps? We look at the postal rates in the price guide, usually published in April each year and match values against genuine postal rates. We then n ask the counter network to review the values to ensure that we have not missed anything which is regularly requested, and at the same time check that the sheet format and number of stamps on the sheet are conducive to counter use.
Another consideration is affixing stamps to our first day covers. This is carried out in the main by our Stephen Meyer International autophix machine (pictured in use right) which has served us well since 1990. How do you decide on the print runs for stamps and covers? We review recent purchasing trends, considering sales of mint sets, first day covers and presentation packs and then look at whether the issue will appeal to our dealers in foreign markets. Finally we make a judgement call about what interest there will be from non-philatelic thematic collectors, considering how popular the subject matter is and whether the brand has worldwide appeal or a limited fan base. Based on this information, we decide on the print quantities for each issue.
And the number in a set? This is often determined by the topic, if through the course of our research we find extra interesting material we sometimes increase the number of stamps or the format. Our aim is to match postal needs with value for money for our collectors. How is the size determined? By the number of stamps in the set, the format and postal requirements. Our main postal issues for the year would generally not be the largest stamp sizes as they have to fit on all shapes and sizes of envelopes (believe me as I spent some time down in the sorting office last Christmas and found that the cards can be barely big enough for an address and stamp)!
On average we produce 13000 stamps in total of each value for all purposes. However from time to time, where an issue is likely to be very popular such as the RAF100 collection, we would print more stamps to meet demand. We print approximately 1250 presentation packs and 2500 first day covers. I think our collections have attracted more perceived value in recent years in line with reduced production runs. I think our collections have attracted more perceived value in recent years in line with reduced production runs. We greatly appreciate your interest in our stamps and coins and remember that we are always just a phone call away if there is anything you’d like to know... Best wishes and nollick ghennal, Maxine
