O Land of Our Birth

Welcome to our Summer 2020 Newsletter Dear Friends I’m writing this on a very wet and miserable Friday afternoon in my dining room on the last day of homeworking before we resume work back at Post Office Headquarters. Paul, Charlie and myself have been back in the office on a number of occasions over the past three weeks and it was good to catch up with our production team colleagues led by Stuart, who have remained at their post since lockdown commenced way back in March. They have done an incredible job to meet the needs of our customers and suppliers in very challenging times and I admire their positive attitude thus ensuring your needs were always first and foremost in their minds. During the last few months the benefits of living on the Isle of Man are there for us all to enjoy every day. In May, Paul Ford suggested we run a photography competition to capture the spirit of our Island on a new issue, seeking images inspired by our Manx national anthem which can be read below. In collaboration with the Isle of Man Steam Packet

Company and Biosphere Isle of Man we filtered down over 1000 entries to just 20 for inclusion within the collection. If you are familiar with the Island you will, like me, probably have very happy memories of the locations, and if you have never been to our shores, there is a welcome awaiting once we can all travel freely! We are very fortunate that our Island has been Covid free for over 60 days. Sadly I know from newspaper reports that this is not the case for many of our customers and the last few months have seen a lot of sadness. Our thoughts are with you and your families. We are here to support in any way we can. Take care and my very best wishes Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

OUR MANX NATIONAL ANTHEM O land of our birth, O gem of God’s earth, O Island so strong and so fair; Built firm as Barrule, Thy throne of Home Rule Makes us free as thy sweet mountain air.

When fierce tempests smote That frail little boat, They ceased at His gentle command; Despite all our fear, The Saviour is near To safeguard our dear Fatherland.

Ye sons of the soil, In hardship and toil, That plough both the land and the sea, Take heart while you can, And think of the Man Who toiled by the Lake Galilee.

Let storm-winds rejoice, And lift up their voice, No danger our homes can befall; Our green hills and rocks Encircle our flocks, And keep out the sea like a wall.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY We are excited to announce that we will be showcasing our collections at the world’s first virtual international stamp show - Virtual Stampex. The online exhibition will run from 1st-3rd October and we will be ‘virtually’ present to help you explore our collections and all our new releases. Please visit www.stampexinternational.co.uk for more information 2

Our Island, thus blest, No foe can molest; Our grain and our fish shall increase; From battle and sword Protecteth the Lord, And crowneth our nation with peace. Then let us rejoice With heart, soul, and voice, And in the Lord’s promise confide; That each single hour We trust in His power No evil our souls can betide.

News Highlights ISLE OF MAN BY DOUG CANEPA Maxine Cannon first met Manx born Doug Canepa and his wife Jo in 1984 at a stamp exhibition in Melbourne Australia. Doug’s father was an officer on the Isle of Man Steam Packet but when he sadly passed away, Doug’s mother took the family to start a new life in Australia. Doug’s love for the Island has never waned and he has returned to stay with Maxine on a couple of occasions. We were emotionally moved when Doug recently got in touch to share a poem he had written about his homeland and we are delighted to share it with you. Thank you Doug!

SNAEFELL 125TH ANNIVERSARY – ISSUE DAY EVENT On Thursday 25th June, Isle of Man Post Office in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure’s Public Transport Division, held a special gathering at the Bungalow & Snaefell Summit as part of the celebrations for the Snaefell Mountain Railway’s 125th Anniversary. The event marked the launch date of a commemorative stamp issue from Isle of Man Post Office and a newly released book titled ‘Snaefell: A Mountain and a Railway’ by author and railway expert Andrew Scarffe. Andrew also wrote the issue text for the products featured in the ‘125th Anniversary of the Snaefell Mountain Railway’ stamp collection.

A beautiful jewel in a shimmering sea A greater sight there never can be Its History, its Heritage, its Life through the years Gives a sense of belonging without any fears To visit the place of your birth and your childhood To stay so much longer, as you know that you should Having to leave with the knowledge and fears That you may never be back can bring only tears You may have to dream as clear as you can About this beautiful place, this Isle of Man.

Transport Services Ian Longworth, author Andrew Scarffe and staff from Isle of Man Railways who watched as Tram Number 1 was driven up to the Bungalow in one of its first outings since March. 125 First Day Covers were carried on board the tram and signed at the Summit by Andrew Scarffe, to now be made available as a set with Andrew’s book, creating a very special product for collectors to mark this special anniversary. Ian Longworth, Director of Transport Services said ‘This event has been a great opportunity to celebrate the Island’s heritage railways, something which is so important as a way of stimulating ongoing use by both locals and tourists’.

To mark the occasion, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Julie Edge MHK, was joined by Director of

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Snaefell Mountain Railway; the first mountain railway in the British Isles. Andrew Scarffe writes… The Snaefell Mountain Railway climbs from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell, the Isle of Man’s only mountain, 2036 feet above sea level. Built by pioneering Victorian engineers, its trams were powered by electricity, a technology then very much in its infancy. Very few British cities or towns had electric trams at this time; an electric tramway climbing a mountain was without doubt state of the art technology. Perhaps even more remarkable, the railway is still in active operation today and is little changed from those Victorian times. The success of the Douglas to Laxey Electric Tramway, which opened in 1894, prompted its promoters to turn their attention to Snaefell and the prospect of a tourist railway to the summit. Construction began in January 1895, and the first trams ran in public service on 21st August after only eight months work! The railway is nearly five miles long and at the time of its construction it wasn’t known if electric trams could climb the gradients of 1 in 12. It was decided to use a raised centre rail, named the Fell Rail after its inventor John Barraclough Fell, which would be gripped on the ascent by motorised horizontal wheels mounted beneath the tram, to give additional adhesion. In the event they weren’t needed but the Fell Rail was retained and used for braking on the descent. It is now the only railway in the world to use the Fell system. Six trams were built by G F Milnes and Company of Birkenhead, of which four survive today. Each tram was originally equipped with four 25HP motors manufactured by Mather and Platt of Salford. They were the most powerful trams in Britain at the time. The railway was an immediate success and an average of 1000 people were carried to the summit each day during the summer months. Hotels were built at the summit and at the Bungalow, next to the Mountain Road. 4

In 1902 the mountain railway and the electric tramway between Douglas and Ramsey were purchased by the newly formed Manx Electric Railway Company, known as the MER. The Isle of Man was by now a very popular holiday destination visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. In 1907, a charabanc service was introduced between the Bungalow and Tholt-y-Will glen where another hotel and tea room was built. During the 1920s and 1930s trams left Douglas for Laxey every few minutes at peak times; and at Laxey queues for Snaefell circled the station. From 1950 tourism began to decline and in 1957 the MER Company, with no funds for desperately-needed maintenance, sold both railways to the Isle of Man Government which still operates them today. The original 1895 motors were replaced by second hand equipment from Germany in 1977 and, more recently, government has made considerable investment in the Manx heritage railways which are now recognised as one of the Island’s leading tourist attractions. A journey from Laxey to the summit takes thirty minutes. As the trams climb the Laxey Valley there are unrivalled views of the Laxey Wheel and the hamlet of Agneash. At Lhergy Veg, the line clings to a steep rock face looking down on the Laxey River far below. Trees and lush farmland are left behind as the landscape gradually changes to that of the more barren uplands. The Mountain Road is crossed at the Bungalow and the line now climbs in a spiral around the mountain. In turn Sulby Valley, Jurby, the Point of Ayre and Ramsey come into view before the tram comes to a halt outside the Summit Hotel. A short walk takes the traveller to the actual summit from where Seven Kingdoms can be seen at a glance. Mann, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Neptune. And the Seventh? Look above, to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Andrew Scarffe has had a lifelong interest in the Manx Electric Railway and Snaefell Mountain Railway. His earliest memories are of weekly trips on the tram to Ramsey to visit his maternal grandparents. The family home was almost next to the Laxey Wheel and it was perhaps this that fostered a life-long interest in the Great Laxey Mine. His great-great-grandfather and his father before him were miners at the famous lead mine. While still at school, Andrew began to research the history of the Great Laxey Mine which led to the publication of his first book, a definitive history of the mine and the Laxey Wheel, which was published in 2004 to mark the 150th anniversary of the waterwheel. Since then he has written a further six books about various

aspects of the history of Laxey and the railways. His latest book tells the history of the Snaefell Mountain Railway to mark its 125th anniversary. Andrew has been a volunteer on the Great Laxey Mine Railway since it was opened in 2004 and took on the role of fundraiser for the restoration of the former Snaefell waterwheel, which was restored in 2006. He has been a committee member of the Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust for 15 years and was recently elected chairman. He regularly gives illustrated talks about the railways and mine. He now works for the engineering department of Isle of Man Railways and can often be seen driving the electric trams of the Manx Electric Railway during the summer months.

Isle of Man Post Office, in collaboration with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and Biosphere IOM, is pleased to present twelve winning photographs selected from a recent competition titled ‘O Land of Our Birth’. The final choice of images references the words of our national anthem which have stood us in good stead during the past few months and will continue to do so long into the future. The national anthem of the Isle of Man was written and composed by William Henry Gill (1839–1923), with the Manx translation by John J Kneen (1873–1939). It is often referred to by its incipit, O Land of Our Birth. It is sung to an adaptation of the traditional Manx melody of Mylecharaine’s March, which had been described as the “Manx national melody” long before Gill’s composition.

First performed at the Manx Music Festival on 21st March 1907, there are eight verses in the modern anthem, but only the first verse is usually sung. The anthem was given official status by the Isle of Man’s legislature, Tynwald, on 22nd January 2003, with God Save the Queen being designated as the royal anthem.

PORT ST MARY “My picture captures the relaxed pace of life in this once busy commercial port now focused on leisure activities. It retains its traditional charm and reminds us of what can be achieved in a changing world.” - John Jones PEEL “A glorious sunny day in Peel, showing the crystal clear waters of Fenella beach. Taken on our first family holiday, returning to not only our honeymoon island, but the land of my birth.” Terence Meadmore PEEL “Long walks on the beach, fish and chips, a street so pretty I couldn’t resist, grabbing my camera, salty air damp, to capture this moment, now printed on a stamp” - Sarah Elliot THE SOUND “The Sound sunset overlooked by Thousla Cross as the fishing boat hits the sunset’s reflection. Sat there I think how lucky I am to live on such a beautiful island...” – Liz Lillis-Ingram 6

CALF OF MAN “Loaghtan sheep on the Calf of Man in July 2019. Startled by our approach, they were momentarily posed on a rocky outcrop against the skyline before vanishing into the bracken and heather.” Colin Gill PEEL “Peel Marina in the sunshine, with its colourful fishing boats and historic castle. I wander around Peel, enjoying the atmosphere and greeting locals I know in this small community, taking my camera whatever the weather.” - Sue Furner

DOUGLAS “I took the photo of the Ben one early morning before I started work, it was very calm that morning and the vessel glided in the bay without disturbing all the little boats. I ended up being late for work but it was really worth it.” – Craig Harriman

BALLAGLASS GLEN “Took a stop in an enchanting place and went home calm and at peace. A beautiful and serene destination where you can live like in a fairy tale.” – Marionette Espinosa THOLT-Y-WILL “A vantage point from conquering Snaefell. An image of a split second to appreciate all we have at our touch on the Isle of Man on a beautiful summer’s afternoon.” – William Hale

GLEN MAYE “I’ve been a regular visitor since childhood and Glen Maye is one of my favourite glens with this lovely beach at the bottom. Taken on a quick walk before catching the ferry home” – Gareth Caley

CREGNEASH “I think that this photo, taken in Cregneash, captures the essence of Manx farming from yesteryear, with “ye sons of the soil, in hardship and toil, that plough both the land and the sea”. Tim Norton DOUGLAS “Taken while visiting the Isle of Man for the Manx Grand Prix in 2017, I felt this spectacular sculpture evoked the Viking heritage of the Island against a stunning blue Manx sky.” – Hilary Denison

Isle of Man Post Office take great pleasure in issuing this landmark set of stamps showcasing three remarkable master watchmakers who are inextricably linked to the Isle of Man. Dr Roger W Smith writes… There is no doubt that, through history watch and clockmakers from the British Isles have contributed the vast majority of inventions which allow us to keep time. In fact more than 75% of all the inventions which make today’s wristwatches function in the most convenient and accurate way are British and it’s notable that the Isle of Man has played an important role in that discovery. Watchmakers tend to fall into two categories; mechanical artists and innovators. The ‘greats’ manage that rare combination of both; creating works of beauty and fine craftsmanship which also push the boundaries of timekeeping accuracy, functional performance, robustness and longevity forward. And some, like John Harwood (1893-1964) and Dr George Daniels (1926-2011), invent something which is utterly transformative. For me, this level of invention is the holy grail for my journey as a watchmaker and it is the accomplishments of the likes of Harwood and Daniels which truly inspire my work. I was fortunate to work with Dr George Daniels at his Riversdale workshop (near Ramsey) and this gave me first-hand experience of his undoubted genius. George Daniels’ famous breakthrough came with his invention of the co-axial escapement. The escapement is the very heart of mechanical timekeeping and conventional designs, such as the ‘Lever escapement’, had been refined over centuries. So, for George to invent a radical new escapement design as recently as 1974, which gave a fundamental improvement to timekeeping performance was simply staggering. Although George was most famous for this invention, his contribution to the resurgence of mechanical watchmaking cannot be understated. Embarking on his journey to hand-build a watch, he found that virtually all the 34 trades required to 8

build a watch had vanished from Britain. So George took on the unprecedented challenge of teaching himself every single one of them. In so doing, he devised what is now known as The Daniels Method and, with the publication of his seminal book, ‘Watchmaking’, he showed us the way. Watchmakers have tended to follow that sadly typical British narrative of the lone inventor fighting the odds to create something new and ground-breaking, and often going unrewarded in their lifetime. George Daniels fought in isolation for years before Omega adopted his escapement in the mid-1990s, but received every possible accolade in later life - and deservedly so. John Harwood however, was another great inventor who devised an incredible breakthrough from the Isle of Man, but was never fully recognised for his work. I doubt even many Manx people are aware of this exceptional watchmaker. Like me, John Harwood was born in Bolton, but he settled on the Isle of Man after returning from the trenches of the First World War to work in a tiny Douglas workshop repairing wristwatches. It was here that he noticed the recurring problem was dust and moisture getting into watches via the exterior opening for the hand-winding mechanism. Harwood began to speculate whether it was possible for a watch to wind itself through the natural movement of being worn on a wrist. After having made approximately 25,000 watches John Harwood sadly went out business in 1931 as a victim of the Great Depression. Rolex, having adopted the self-winding mechanism, survived and, although they recognised John Harwood’s contribution in an advertisement in 1956, he virtually disappeared from the annals of watchmaking history. It is therefore fitting that this fascinating stamp issue by the Isle of Man Post Office reminds us

not just about John Harwood, but also the Isle of Man as a very special place in the pantheon of horological invention.

Series 3 and 4 watches and the Series 5 (Open Dial) watch. All feature Roger’s latest evolution of his single-wheel co-axial escapement.

DR ROGER W SMITH OBE

In 2018, Roger was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for ‘outstanding services to watchmaking’ and, in 2019, Birmingham City University awarded Roger an honorary doctorate in recognition of his advancements in horology.

Roger Smith’s horological career began, aged 16, at the Manchester School of Horology. He passed out top of his class and was awarded the British Horological Institute’s Bronze Medal. During the course, Dr George Daniels (1926-2011), was a visiting speaker and inspired Roger’s ambition - to hand-make watches. After eventually working alongside Dr Daniels to create the Millennium Series of watches, Roger established his own studio in the Isle of Man in 2001. His first creation was the Series 1 watch followed, in 2006, by his seminal Series 2.

In 2019, at the ‘Designing Our Future’ expo in New York City, Roger announced his collaboration with the Faculty of Science at Manchester Metropolitan University to develop the world’s first mechanical watch using nano-materials. Named the ‘GREAT Britain II’, this watch represents the greatest single step forward for mechanical watch technology in the modern era.

In 2012, the British Horological Institute recognised Roger with the rarely-awarded Barrett Silver Medal. During 2013, Roger was invited by the Prime Minister, David Cameron to become an Ambassador for the GREAT Britain campaign, representing the best of British innovation, technology and creativity. To celebrate these values, Roger created the now iconic ‘Great Britain’ watch. In 2015, Roger Smith announced the first range of authentic British watches for decades. The range comprises reimagined Series 1 and 2 watches, newly developed

2020 YEAR OF THE NURSE AND MIDWIFE At a time when society is showing its collective gratitude to healthcare workers, the issue of our May collection ‘The 2020 Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ could not have come at a more meaningful time. Working in partnership with the Community Nursing Charitable Trust, which raises funds for the continued development of nurses and midwives for Manx Care (similar to the NHS), the issue is a tribute to the critical role of our nurses and midwifes in achieving universal health coverage. Since its May release we have been truly honoured to receive some wonderful comments which we are delighted to share with you.

“Recognising the contribution of the nursing profession in this way is very special and this is an extremely thoughtful tribute from the Isle of Man Post Office. Florence Nightingale is probably the most iconic nurse in history and the most prevalent in our profession and so using her image will resonate with many.” Estephanie Dunn, Regional Director for the Royal College of Nursing “Since qualifying in 1982, I have witnessed significant advances in the nursing and midwifery professions; many of which have resulted in increased autonomy for practitioners. Not only has this led to improved care delivery, it acknowledges the true worth of nurses and midwives. I am proud to represent such noble professionals; and sincerely thank IOM nurses and midwives past and present - for their commitment to patient care.” Cath Quilliam, Director of Nursing on the Isle of Man “Midwives are present not only for the births of babies but also for the births of parents and families. I feel privileged to be a Nobles Midwife sharing this special time with Manx families.” Barbara, RM, Head of Midwifery “My inspiration as a Nurse was my Great Aunt, who was a Field Nurse during WW2, meeting Casualties from Dunkirk. My motivation is to care and support people alongside my peers. Being a Nurse provides great camaraderie and we all have one common goal.” Jenny, EN RN BSc Hons. These comments along with many others can be found in the collection below.
