Welcome to our Autumn 2020 Newsletter Dear Friends I write this on 9th October, on what is a gorgeously sunny autumnal day. Thankfully, we have been Covid free since late June, with our borders closed and limited travel for essential keyworkers and humanitarian reasons. We all feel extremely fortunate and grateful to be in this position compared to so many of our friends around the world. We hope that you are all in good health wherever you may be. This year sees the 40th Anniversary of the consecration of Cathedral Isle of Man in Peel. In addition to this, 2020 is designated the Year of the Cathedral and Pilgrimage, so we felt it very fitting to feature aspects of the Nativity story as the theme for our Christmas stamp issue. I hope you enjoy the issue and its message this festive season. Our 2020 Year Collections are now completed and make for a very interesting range of issues, which
pay tribute to the work of so many who have carried us through the past twelve months. The year collections also serve as a timely reminder of the values and heritage of our Island, which unites us with both our local population and those who have made positive contributions worldwide. With all good wishes and sincere thanks from the entire team for your continued interest in Isle of Man Stamps & Coins Take care

SIMON CALLOW ATTENDS PRESS EVENT FOR DICKENS – ONE FIFTY ISSUE Actor Simon Callow CBE joined staff at The Charles Dickens Museum on 8th October for the presentation of our beautiful ‘Charles Dickens One Fifty’ stamp collection that was created in cooperation with the museum. Simon Callow CBE is a Patron of the museum and has been associated with Dickens all his career. He commented “I am really very happy to be returning to the Charles Dickens Museum, one of my absolute favourite places on earth, to support the launch of
this splendid suite of stamps. John Leech’s sketches were the very first illustrations of characters that had only just formed in the imagination of Charles Dickens and would soon become fixed in the hearts and minds of his readers. It’s a particularly nice touch that they’re joined in this set by the ‘eagle-eyed’ portrait of Dickens, which captures him when he was in the midst of creating them.” http://www.iompost.com/dickens
A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY A special online conference dedicated to collecting classic GB stamps is set to take place as a “virtual” event on the popular www.allaboutstamps.co.uk website from 13 to 15 November. Being held in partnership with the Great Britain Philatelic Society (GBPS), the online event will give collectors the chance to learn more about British stamps with special talks, webinars and Q&A sessions. The online conference will be free to attend and is set to be the first of an ongoing series of ‘Collectors’ Conference’ events to be featured on the allaboutstamps.co.uk website. 2
News Highlights ISLE OF MAN STAMPS & COINS ATTEND FIRST VIRTUAL STAMP EXHIBITION Hosted by the Philatelic Trading Society, Virtual Stampex opened from the 1st - 3rd October 2020, providing collectors with the opportunity to connect globally with Stampex stand holders, PTS members, auction houses, postal administrations and experts, completely free of charge. We were delighted to be involved in what was a first for Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, and are grateful to the PTS for their innovation in the absence of physical exhibitions this year. We do however look forward to meeting with collectors in person as soon as it is safe to do so!
IOMPO HELPS CELEBRATE KINDNESS IN OUR COMMUNITY In September an event was held at the Gaiety Theatre by Isle of Man Newspapers in conjunction with Manx Telecom, to celebrate the many acts of kindness that have been shown within our community during the recent challenging times. The event was a time for reflection and also a reminder about the huge positive impact all of our front line and key workers made to the lives of so many during lockdown. The business was represented by our colleagues, Muneera Quayle, Johnny Williamson, Afton Wood and Maxine Cannon.
A night of entertainment was provided to show the many people who supported our Island community during lockdown how much they are appreciated. Maxine Cannon commented “To speak with so many people who recalled acts of kindness from my colleagues across the business was not a surprise as I know without the extra challenges of Covid 19 you are all champions of our business. I was very proud when a packed Gaiety saw clips of how our work changed to cope with the ever changing challenges our Island faced in the spring of 2020”.
MITCH MURRAY TAKES MEDIA BY STORM In September we issued ‘Mitch Murray’s Top Ten’, a collection commemorating the life and career of Songwriter-Composer, Producer and Author Mitch Murray CBE. This impressive collection highlights many of Mitch’s achievements and even includes a world first, a new musical composition released exclusively via the stamps. Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail provided extensive coverage with a full page write up in the tabloid, and news of the issue hit some of the artists for whom Mitch has previously worked with. Chris Raynor of Paper Lace said “The Paper Lace success was due to Mitch Murray & Peter Callander...without Mitch’s commercial & catchy songs the world may never have heard of the band.” www.iompost.com/mitch-murray

We are very pleased to present this commemoration of the life and achievements of Isle of Man resident Mitch Murray CBE with our dynamic set of ten top stamps. Mitch Murray writes… I’m looking at ten remarkable stamps, and I’m like a drowning man, but in a good way. My whole life rushes before me, the stamps capture it; colourful, interesting and full of fun. This fabulous collection, issued by the Isle of Man Post Office, represents my career in all its aspects, and covers a period of sixty years. It’s an honour I could never have imagined receiving. Believe me, a lifetime tribute like this is so much better when you’re still alive. For one thing, you’re able to make sure they get your story right. However, that was never in doubt. Not with this team. Having experienced the talents and vision of the good people of the IOMPO, who encouraged me to make suggestions and get involved with the concept, I found the experience so enjoyable I’m now hoping for a follow-up. Oh, wait! They don’t do that with stamps, do they? From the first stamp in this collection, featuring my songs; ‘How Do You Do It?’ and ‘I Like It’ - both number ones for Gerry and the Pacemakers - and one of them also recorded by the Beatles - through to the tenth
stamp; a reminder of the books I wrote, starting with ‘How To Write A Hit Song’, which inspired a 12 year-old schoolboy - the future Sting - to begin songwriting. Later, thanks to my career within a career; speechwriting, a successful series of books on making funny speeches and, through the window, a friendly ‘Hello’ to the magic folk at the famous, enchanted Manx Fairy Bridge. These are memories made vivid. Here I find reminders of the wonderful artistes and performers I’ve been privileged to write for and often produce; Tony Christie, Paper Lace, Gerry Marsden, Georgie Fame. Flashbacks to co-writers like Peter Callander; one of the world’s best lyricists, Les Reed; a musical genius, Geoff Stephens; a great guy and an all-rounder just like me - especially the ‘great guy’ bit. Here I see Ivor Novello Awards and Gold Discs, there I relive London’s Tin Pan Alley, Denmark Street (that’s me, in the street, up the pole with Freddie and the Dreamers in 1963). What’s this? Oh yes, my love of comedy - there I am in 1965, appearing on ABC’s ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’, singing my eccentric hit, ‘Down Came The Rain’. This record was my biggest comedy success, but there wasn’t a single funny line in it. A
4
B
It was all ‘comedy performance art’. The laughs came when my crazy voice suddenly screamed, ‘Down Came The Wrrraaain!!!’ Look at the ninth stamp; more humour. We’re in the 80s and I’m presenting ‘Dial A Disc’ for BT - a 24/7 Show available only by dialling 160 on your phone. I also wrote jingles for it: ‘Can you guess where this is coming from? Quite right, it’s British Telecom, And ev’rybody’s well-e-come Music in your ear’ole, Dial-A-Disc! A salute by stamp to The Society Of Distinguished Songwriters (SODS), which I founded in 1971, and still going strong, with members like Don Black, Mike Batt, Gary Barlow, Sir Tim Rice, Tony Hatch, Justin Hayward, Barry Mason, and 40 more superb British songwriters whose music continues to thrill the world with the greatest songs, film scores and musicals. As founder, I’m often referred to as ‘The Sodfather’, and I simply had to include this brotherhood on one of these great stamps. Being a songwriter is a wonderful life, but there’s one condition; you have to keep having big hits. I’ve been very fortunate - ‘The Ballad Of Bonnie and Clyde’, ‘Avenues And Alleyways’, ‘Billy, Don’t Be A Hero’ and many others - all still being played, sung, whistled and now commemorated on postage stamps. Having lived in the beautiful Isle of Man for half my life, I couldn’t be more proud.

At last, the Island was again buzzing with excitement that the British motorcycle industry was back in business, making motorbikes instead of munitions and eager to showcase their latest products at the TT. Six long years had elapsed since Cyril Pullen and his Rudge had crossed the winning line in 1914 and, sadly, some familiar faces had departed the scene forever. Happily, however, more than twenty new ones were stepping up to take their place, among them Graham Walker, George Dance, Bert le Vack, Gus Kuhn and Rueben Harveyson, all of whom would eventually feature highly in the motorcycle hall of fame. To add to the anticipation of this ďŹ rst post-war event, a signiďŹ cant change in the TT Course was adopted to give spectators in the Island’s capital the thrill of seeing machines travel at high speed along Glencrutchery Road. This was achieved by adding Signpost Corner, Bedstead Corner and Governor’s Bridge to the route, following the ascent from Hillberry and replacing the pre-war section which had involved competitors turning right at Cronk-ny-Mona and proceeding down Johnny Watterson’s Lane to its junction with Ballanard Road where a left hand turn had been taken to join the top of Bray Hill. 6
The new arrangement now provided the machines exiting Governor’s Bridge an opportunity to accelerate at full speed along Glencrutchery Road passing Noble’s Park on the way; the area which had been chosen for the re-location of the competitors’ paddock. To add to the pleasure of the spectators, it was also decided to place the start and ďŹ nish line in much the same position as it is today, and apart from a minor route deviation in Ramsey in the very early 1920s, the ďŹ nal piece of the TT jigsaw was in place. The 37.73 mile TT Course was complete and although many highway improvements have been undertaken over the years to the road surface and to ease bends for everyday trafďŹ c, the route has remained unchanged since 1920. As we know, the event has developed a history which continues to be enriched each year and it is fascinating to wonder if any of those present in 1920 ever imagined two-wheeled machinery would still be racing along the very same circuit one hundred years later. Sadly, in 2020, all racing was cancelled due to COVID-19, but that only gave us more time to reect on our Isle of Man road racing memories and look forward to 2021 and beyond and perhaps one day seek World Heritage status for our unique and fantastic race course? Long live the TT!

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens, one of the world’s most famous and loved writers. To celebrate Isle of Man Post Office present a set of six stamps featuring five engravings from his most famous book A Christmas Carol and a miniature portrait of the author from the same period as the book was written. In this collection we reflect on the story of his major triumph and how it changed Christmas forever; as well as encapsulate a key moment from his celebrated life and times. Geoffrey Sanderson writes…
A Christmas Carol This much loved classic story was written in a few short weeks to ensure its publication before Christmas 1843, but its message has stood the test of time. First published over 175 years ago and recognised by critics on its publication as ‘a national benefit and to every man and woman who reads it a personal kindness’, the story has been retold and adapted ever since. The stamp designs depict five of the famous engravings as they appeared in the book, illustrated by Dickens’s long time friend and collaborator, John Leech.
Dickens and Leech Caricaturist and illustrator John Leech (1817 64) was a leading comic illustrator when he met Dickens in 1842. Dickens employed Leech the following year to create black and white drawings and hand coloured plates for A Christmas Carol Leech was commissioned for all the successive Christmas books often paired with other artists from the Punch staff and the Dickens circle.
Dickens and Christmas In the early 1800s a new literary marketplace was emerging to meet the demands of a more literate and affluent audience. At this same time our modern day idea of Christmas began to emerge with an emphasis on celebrating children 8
and family. This included the arrival of a new tradition that still survives to this day; as 1843 was also the year of the invention and sending of the first Christmas card, by V&A Museum director and postal system reformer Sir Henry Cole. In tandem the printing industry was also evolving, producing many new formats of books which made ideal Christmas presents. The timing of these changes was important to Dickens’s career. Dickens loved Christmas and it was at the heart of his work: his first and last published books contain Christmas scenes and A Christmas Carol was the most popular of his public reading performances. Even today the book remains in print and a year does not go by without another adaption of the story on stage or screen. At over 175 years since its first publication, Dickens is inextricably linked to our ideas of the modern Christ mas because of the enduring storytelling and characters of A Christmas Carol having continued relevance.
The Lost Portrait Our highest value stamp features the lost portrait of Charles Dickens, depicting the emerging literary star at the age of 31. The painting was officially lost for over 130 years, and recently, miraculously, turned up in a box of trinkets in South Africa. Art dealers Philip Mould Company formally re identified the portrait and it now resides in the Charles Dickens Museum, London.
Painted in late 1843 by artist and fellow social campaigner Margaret Gillies (1803 87), it was last seen in public in 1844 when exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The portrait returned to the UK in time for the 175th anniversary of the publication of A Christmas Carol in December 2018.
About The Charles Dickens Museum In developing this exclusive stamp set, we partnered with the Charles Dickens Museum, the UK’s leading authority on Dickens’s life and times and home to thousands of artefacts from his life, including 48 Doughty Street, the only house in which Dickens lived in London that survives. This is where the author wrote The Pickwick Papers Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby It’s where he first achieved international fame as one of the world’s greatest storytellers, and where visitors and scholars alike can uncover the private world behind the author’s public image.
It contains the world’s finest and most comprehensive collection of material relating to his life and work, with over 100, 000 items including furniture, personal effects, paintings, prints, photographs, letters, manuscripts, and rare editions. The collection, and the discoveries that their network of researchers uncover, form the inspiration for their programme of special exhibitions and events. The Museum is a focal point for all things Dickens; hosting events, exhibitions, workshops, performances and talks on his life, work and legacy. We are grateful for their guidance and permissions in using the original engravings featured in these designs; which are taken from A Christmas Carol and created by Dickens’s friend and collaborator John Leech. https://dickensmuseum.com

,20 3RVW 2IƓFH SUHVHQWV VL[ IHVWLYH VWDPSV WR FHOHEUDWH WKH VWRU\ RI WKH QDWLYLW\ The Rt Revd PA Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man writes… The year 2020 began with great promise. Not just was there the usual excitement of a new year, but it was the beginning of a new decade, and a time for looking forward to new opportunities and discoveries. There were rumours of a virus that was emerging in Asia, but that seemed so far away, and, after all, is humanity not now an advanced civilisation that can effectively control its own destiny? How different it looks as we move towards the end of the year. Far from shaping our own society as we wish, we have been forced, across the world, to adopt acute defensive measures that noone had envisaged. Far from 2020 being a year of inter-connected human endeavour, it has turned out for many to be an experience of isolation and fearfulness, and for others a year of illness, bereavement, loss, and death. With this, there has come unemployment, economic hardship, and increased disparity between wealth and poverty. In many parts of our world, the poor have become much, much poorer, with this dreadful dispossessedness often exacerbated by human incompetence or natural disaster. / iÃi >Ài ` vwVÕ Ì Ü À`Ã] LÕÌ Ì iÞ >Ài ÌÀÕi] and around them lurk other issues of concern, especially the climate of our planet. But it is also in our human nature to look for good: good in one another, good in the world around. We may therefore wish, at the end of the year, to be grateful
for many things in the life of our Island, and to acknowledge that we have been richly blessed. In facing our challenges, we have experienced sadness, and we mourn the loss of life in our own community, loss of life that circumstances did not allow us to mark as we would have wished; but we have also experienced warmth, the comfort and support of each other, and a renewed understanding of the relationships of empathy that shape a caring and compassionate society. For all these reasons, it is particularly appropriate Ì >Ì Ã i v > * ÃÌ "vwVi vviÀà Õà À ÃÌ >à stamps that tell the story of the nativity. These are events rooted in the experience of poverty, injustice and political oppression, uncertainty, vulnerability, and hardship. It tells of a child born to everyday impoverished parents in a dark, cold world where nothing could be taken for granted. In describing a small family on the edge of the unknown, the story of the nativity encapsulates the concerns of so many in our world today, and yet it also points towards light and hope: not without challenge and struggle, to be sure, but light and hope that can be a sign of new life and iÜ Li} }ð / iÃi À ÃÌ >à ÃÌ> «Ã Û Ìi us to draw that light and hope into our own lives, and to allow them to dispel darkness and sorrow.
