Chinese Year of the Ox • Show Birds • Devoted To Your Service New Coin Collections • Special Limited Editions and much more
Welcome to our Winter 2021 Newsletter To all of our valued collectors and friends, I write to you on a typically overcast Manx winter’s morning in the hope that this newsletter finds you safe and well. I hope that you managed to enjoy the Christmas and New Year period despite all of the struggles faced across the globe. We underwent a short circuit breaker lockdown after the festive season and spent some time working from home. However, our product development team continued to produce stamp issues, and our production team worked really hard to assemble and despatch your orders with care, ensuring they reached you as quickly as possible. We really did appreciate your patience and understanding, particularly if you experienced any delays with your orders. We begin the year with the continuation of our Lunar New Year stamp series. Designed by Manx artist Jay Cover, the Chinese Year of the Ox is a groundbreaking stamp issue and a piece of postal history, being the first triangular stamp issue released by a British postal administration – it is a real collectors piece. Our second issue of the year is entitled
Show Birds, a collection of six beautifully presented popular and unusual species seen through the lens of award winning photographer Luke Stephenson. Finally we pay tribute to HM The Queen as we prepare to celebrate her 95th Birthday with an issue entitled ‘Devoted To Your Service’ along with ten other postal administrations. Keep an eye out for a special joint sheetlet which will be announced very soon. The team is excited to deliver our planned issue programme for 2021. We hope it adds variation and many interesting topics to your collections and we would love to hear your thoughts going forward. Wishing you all the best of health for the year ahead,
Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
SPANISH FEDERATION PHILATELIC SOCIETY To highlight the major global issues and response surrounding Covid-19, the Spanish Federation Philatelic Society published a new book from the Series “Let’s Talk About...” with the suggestive title “From the Great Plague of Marseille to COVID19” Notes on Disinfected Mail in Spain. This book is dedicated to all staff who gave so much, including those who gave their lives, to save us from this pandemic. It also aims to highlight the importance of the postal history of mail disinfection during the last five centuries and the similarities between the “old pandemics” and the current Covid-19 health crisis. We were honoured that our #CarryUsThrough collection was recognised in the publication and would like to thank Rafael Acuña Castillo of the federation for recognising our contribution. DONATION TO THE COMMUNITY NURSING AND THE COMMUNITY NURSING CHARITABLE TRUST In December, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Julie Edge MHK along with General Manager Maxine Cannon visited trustees from the Community Nursing and the Community Nursing Charitable Trust to make a donation as a result of our ‘Year of the Nurse and Midwife’ collection from May 2020. The Charitable Trust was set up to support Community Nurses with a means to pay for additional training and development so we were delighted to make a contribution to continue their fantastic work. You can find out more about the collection at - iompost.com/nurses 2
News Highlights ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE WRITES POSTAL HISTORY ISSUING FIRST EVER TRIANGULAR STAMPS BY ANY BRITISH POSTAL ADMINISTRATION As a continuation of the Isle of Man Post Office’s Lunar New Year series, January saw the release of our Chinese Year Of The Ox issue; the first set of triangular stamps to be issued any British postal administration. Artist Jay Cover said “For the illustrator creating a stamp design for your country is like being an athlete competing in the Olympic Games. Not only that but to do so in such an innovative way, by creating Britain’s first triangular stamp and to celebrate the Chinese New Year speaks to our Island’s global outlook, our openness our desire to embrace other cultures. It’s an absolute privilege as always to work with Isle of Man Post Office’. You can view the full collection overleaf.
MAYFLOWER 400 USPS PRESENTATION On Wednesday 18th November, the Isle of Man’s Chief Minister Howard Quayle, Isle of Man Post Office Chairman Julie Edge MHK, Alastair Kneale, President of the London Manx Society and Ben Glazier, Designer of the Mayflower 400 stamp issue, took part in a virtual framed presentation to the US Ambassador to London, Woody Johnson at the US Embassy. The frame included key products produced to commemorate the role played by Captain Myles Standish who lived on the Isle of Man and sailed on the Mayflower along with the Pilgrim Fathers and their families to establish a colony in Plymouth Massachusetts USA in 1620. The Ambassador was delighted to accept the frame and to hear about the many and varied cultural and heritage connections we share with the USA. Details of the new USPS joint cover can be found on page 15.

We mark one of the most famous festivals on the planet with the first set of triangular stamps to be issued by Isle of Man Post Office. Designed by Manx artist Jay Cover, this historic issue is a reminder of the power of stamps to serve as tribute to both historical events and the history of philately. The Chinese New Year is one of the most widely celebrated annual festivals on the planet and responsible for the greatest temporary movement of human beings as people join friends and families in celebration involving countless locations worldwide. The Ox is the second animal represented in the twelve year Lunar cycle beginning on 12th February 2021, other Ox years being 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009. In common with the animal’s agricultural role, people born under the sign of the Ox are considered to be hard-working and perceived as characteristically diligent, persistent and honest. They are intelligent and reliable, think logically and are fit for leadership, though they rarely seek to be the centre of attention nor do they seek praise. They typically show great endurance and, though they are prone to stubbornness and occasional displays of quicktemper, make loyal and honest friends. Our stamp set pictures the Ox in four guises, in addition to which, two other animals feature in the set that are strongly associated with the Ox: the Rooster is the most compatible sign with the Ox while, most famously, the Rat was carried by the Ox to the finish line of the mythological Emperor’s race of the zodiac signs - only to hop off at the last moment to leave the Ox in second place. The Triangular Stamp Triangular stamps are not common, yet one design features among the most famous stamps in the world, playing a significant part in the early life of the world’s best-known stamp dealer. The triangular stamps in question, a 1d in brick-red and a 4d in blue, were issued by the Cape of Good Hope on 1st September 1853, and are generally referred to as the ‘Cape Triangulars’ (in 1855 6d and 1s values were added). The Cape Legislative Council 4
determined that it wanted a ‘device so different from those of English postage stamps as to catch the eye at a glance’. The colony’s Surveyor-General, Charles Bell, prepared designs that were both triangular and polygon-shaped, but the printers, Perkins Bacon in London, only adopted the former, the design showing ‘Hope’ sitting on an anchor on top of a rock. It is believed the shape was chosen to help staff recognise stamps from the colony when sorting mail. The stamps remained in use until 1864. In 1861 an apparent shortage led to the 1d and 4d values being printed locally. The slightly crude result, although engraved on steel, is known by collectors as ‘Woodblocks’. Errors during the printing resulted in two of the world’s rarest stamps: the 1d printed in blue rather than vermillion, and the 4d in vermillion instead of blue. It is said that in 1863 two sailors offered a kitbag full of ‘Cape Triangulars’ to Edward Stanley Gibbons, who had started selling stamps from his father’s pharmacist shop in Plymouth in 1856. The sailors said they had won the stamps, all used, including strips, blocks and ‘Woodblocks’, in a raffle. Gibbons is said to have paid £5 for the lot. Whether true or not, certainly he was able to offer extensive supplies of the stamps at the time. Gibbons sold his stamp business in 1890, but the name of Stanley Gibbons remains world-renowned. Newfoundland quickly followed the lead of the Cape of Good Hope by issuing a 3d yellowish-green triangular stamp in 1857, again printed by Perkins Bacon, but no other Commonwealth country issued such a stamp throughout the 19th century. Indeed, not until New Zealand used the format, producing triangular stamps depicting Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) on its charitable Health issue in 1943. Triangular stamps remain unusual, as the subject matter needs to be
right, as with the pair from the United States issued for the International Stamp Exhibition, ‘Pacific 97’, depicting a mail coach and clipper. It is a challenge to create a design that comfortably fits the triangular format. The Isle of Man Chinese Year of the Ox stamps are, in fact, the first triangular stamps from any of the British postal administrations (Royal Mail, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man). Even more unusual is the fact that two of the stamps have the apex of the triangle at the base of the design. Most triangular stamps are designed with the apex at the top of the stamp, printed in sheets with alternate stamps upside down (known as tête-bêche), an arrangement successfully overcome in this case.
Chinese New Year In more recent years a number of postal administrations have marked the Chinese New Year with a special stamp release. As far as the People’s Republic of China is concerned, the first occasion was in 1980 when, on 15th February, an 8 fen stamp marked the Year of the Monkey. The design, by Huang Yongyu and Shao Bolin, showed the Gēngshēn Monkey or Golden Monkey. Although 5 million were printed, it is a sought-after stamp of which forgeries have been produced. — Richard West MBE

Isle of Man Post Office showcases both popular and unusual species of birds selected from the world of cage and aviary as seen through the lens of photographer Luke Stephenson.
In addition to the keeping of familiar varieties of budgie, canary and small finches in the home, there has been a widespread tradition of caged bird societies and competitions and ‘fur and feather’ shows at British gatherings stretching back centuries. The birds selected are new to our stamp collection and include both common and exotic varieties with one, a redpoll crossed with a bullfinch, included to illustrate an important aspect of bird fancying, that of creating hybrid cross breeds, both for their appearance and song. Show Birds on the Isle of Man by Roy Howarth
Bird shows grew in popularity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Isle of Man Cage Bird Society, founded in 1953, was the most specialised of recent years and ran for over 60 years. Caged bird exhibits have also been part of the Ramsey Fur and Feather shows since the 1930s while the Onchan Fur and Feather has held 93 shows to date. The Stamps The Fife Canary: One of the most popular
show birds. The wild canary, a species of the Serin finch genus, was found only on the islands off the west coast of Africa: the Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores and Cape Verde Islands.
The first captive birds in the Isle of Man, other than poultry and birds of prey, for falconry, were probably parrots in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries brought here by sailors from South America and Africa. They were exotic looking and could be taught to speak. They also brought canaries which had been domesticated from the fifteenth century and were kept for their song. Canaries were named after the Canary Islands which were named after the many dogs (Canids) that were found there. Linnets were also kept for their song. The budgerigar was imported by the artist John Gould in 1840 to the UK and the Budgerigar Society was founded in 1925 in England. It was most popular after World War II in the 1950s. Other societies were created for the various breeds of canaries and also British and foreign birds. A

Gouldian Finch: Also referred to as the
rainbow finch and named by British ornithological artist John Gould in 1844 as Amadina Gouldiae, in honour of his deceased wife Elizabeth. In the wild it inhabits grassy open woodlands across the north east of Western Australia, the Top End of Northern Territory, and parts of northern Queensland. Budgerigar: The budgerigar is probably the most popular domestic show bird. Most commonly green and yellow this small parrot of the genus Melopsittacus is native to inland Australia where they are largely nomadic and move according to food and water availability, sometimes seen in huge numbers in suitable conditions. Redpoll Hybrid: The redpolls are a group of small passerine birds in the finch family Fringillidae. Our specimen is the result of cross breeding with a bullfinch, an area of great interest to fanciers.
Paradise Tanager: Native to the
Amazonian lowlands and much of continent, the Tangara Chilensis songbird is found in the canopy of humid forests, often in mixed-species flocks. Despite its exotic appearance it is evaluated as ‘least concern’ on the IUCN red list of threatened species. Diamond Sparrow: Also known as a Firetail due to its distinctive shards of red upon its beak, eyes and rump. Stagonopleura guttata is an estrildid finch that is common to Australia and is found from the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia right through to the south-east of Queensland.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present six stamps in celebration of HM The Queen’s 95th birthday. To commemorate this milestone we showcase key aspects of Her Majesty’s long reign since her accession in 1952 and pay tribute to HRH Prince Philip in this landmark issue, produced in collaboration with ten other postal administrations. Lady Colin Campbell writes… The Lord of Mann is the most revered head of state in the world. Born on the 21st April 1926 to the Duke and Duchess of York, Queen Elizabeth II’s 95th birthday is celebrated by the Isle of Man Post Office with the issuance of a series of six stamps marking a few of the many highpoints of her life. The cover of this collection aptly features a dual image, a contemporary picture of the older woman who is fondly known all over the world as The Queen (as if there were no other), and a smaller image from nine decades ago of the young Princess Elizabeth when she had little prospect of acceding to the throne. Known for her sense of humour and beaming smile as much as for her devotion to duty, the stamp marked Princess is reminiscent of the famous broadcast Princess Elizabeth made to the Empire from South Africa to mark her twenty first birthday. In that speech, she articulated her intention to devote her life to the service of all the peoples of the Realm, a promise she has kept throughout her long reign and even longer life. The stamp entitled Coronation reminds us just how beautiful and glamorous a couple The Queen and her consort, The Duke of Edinburgh, were in their youth. Acceding to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25, and crowned in Westminster Abbey at
8
26, Queen Elizabeth II’s reign started with high hopes of a second and equally glorious Elizabethan Age as the first, and while her reign has seen the dismantling of the Empire and the development of the Commonwealth, it has also witnessed the creation of one of the world’s most vibrant and progressive multi-cultural societies. By her own admission, her goal of service to the people of her Realms and of the Commonwealth has been much enhanced by the innovativeness, imagination, and support of The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, so it is fitting that one of the stamps is entitled Marriage. Well known to be a great mimic and of sociable bent, The Queen has never had the time for many hobbies. Two of her main ones have been bloodstock and photography, and it is fitting that she is commemorated under the caption of Leisure as a young woman wielding a camera, her hair encased in the inevitable scarf she has always worn when out of doors. By her own account, she does not have the time to have her hair done more than once a day, and she is one of the few women whose hairstyle has never varied throughout her adult life. Partly this has been a matter of practicality but it has also been because The Queen is aware that she must be easily identifiable, and her hair has been but one of the elements of her image that has remained unchanged throughout the decades.

Pageantry is another essential element of the monarchy, so the stamp celebrating this aspect of The Queen’s reign and life is wisely chosen: the mature monarch, wearing a crown and the smile which lights up her face and provides a glimpse of the warm, kind, and dutiful woman who has devoted her whole life to her People. Another is the royal uniform of a hat, gloves, and brightly coloured outfits that she customarily wears during the day whenever she is out and about on her royal engagements, and the stamp entitled Royal Duty is representative of this.
Royal author Lady Colin Campbell, known to the British public by the moniker Lady C since her acclaimed stint on I’m A Celebrity....Get Me Out of Here resulted in her becoming the most Googled living individual in 2015. A popular and newsworthy public figure, she is called upon to commentate about the Royal Family all over the world, as well as taking part in popular TV shows such as Celebs Go Dating, Through the Keyhole, Loose Women, This Morning and Good Morning Britain.
