Welcome to our Summer 2021 Newsletter Dear Friends Welcome to our summer newsletter! As I write this, we are at the beginning of Manx National Week. Tynwald Day is on Monday 5th July, and as many of you will know it will mark our 48th anniversary of postal independence. It would be very remiss of me not to say a real big thanks to you for your continued support of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, I hope you enjoy our latest new releases as much, if not more than the first Isle of Man issue you bought way back when….. To our coin collectors, I would like to apologise for the lack of new issues we have been able to offer you over the last nine months. Currently the Isle of Man Treasury is undertaking a review of their routes to market, with the result that circulating coins are not available to us with the exception of ad hoc pre-packaged new issues, the most recent being Alice in Wonderland. We recognise that continuity and completeness is crucial for a collector, and please be assured that as soon as we receive any
ARMED FORCES DAY 2021 Saturday 26th June 2021, saw the nation gather to mark Armed Forces Day. Locally on the Island, hundreds gathered to celebrate the contributions, both past and present of those who have served, with a family event held at the Villa Marina. We were honoured to be involved with the launch of our Royal British Legion stamp issue which also saw the first play of a tribute film ‘In Flanders Fields’ poignantly recorded by members of the RBL in their 100th year. We are grateful to all who took part. SGT BEN POKU Sgt Ben Poku has been a volunteer case worker at the RBL for over 13 years, providing essential support for ex-Servicemen and women, and their families. Originally from Ghana, Ben Poku has served in the Army for almost 21 years, first as a Gunner in

feedback from our counterparts at Treasury we will share this with you. At this point I would like to thank all of our numismatic collectors and those interested in philatelic numismatic collections, my favourite of which will always be the 150th Anniversary of the Penny Black in 1990. Enjoy the summer months and hopefully it won’t be too long now before we are able to meet in person, either on the Island or beyond, we miss getting together. With all good wishes

He is now based at Catterick Garrison and has been working within the local NHS during Covid-19. He is pictured here with the RBL 100 stamp from which he is featured. Sgt Ben Poku, RBL Volunteer Case Worker, said: “It’s a real privilege to feature on these special edition stamps to mark the RBL’s Centenary, as we celebrate the charity’s proud heritage and the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces. I love my Volunteering role, it’s very rewarding to see first-hand the impact the work of the charity has on the people it helps. The money raised from the sales of these stamps will help us continue to provide life-long support to the Armed Forces Community, in what is a very poignant year for us.” iompost.com/RBL

ALL ABOARD! ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE REPRESENTATIVES JOIN MANX NATIONAL HERITAGE AND THE MANX WILDLIFE TRUST TO MARK ANNIVERSARY Vice Chairman IOMPO Chris Thomas and staff from the Stamps & Coins division were delighted to join representatives from Manx National Heritage (MNH) on a visit to the Calf of Man on Monday 17th May 2021, to mark the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Manx National Trust. The trip was organised by Shaun Murphy, Property Manager for MNH, and Dr Erica Spencer, Environmental Planner and Ecologist for MNH, as a sign of appreciation for all the hard work the IOMPO team have invested to produce the Calf of Man stamp collection which was released in April. The team were met on the Calf by Dr Lara Howe of Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) who was forthcoming in sharing her knowledge of the Island and describing the conservation work she undertakes as part of the contribution of the Island to our biodiversity. Guests also had the opportunity to meet the wardens, view some of the locations featured on the stamps and encounter more wildlife, all of which highlight the important role the Calf of Man plays in nature conservation and the significant contribution it has made to the Isle of Man’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere. Chris Thomas MHK said The Calf of Man stamps are a fitting tribute to this celebration and we are proud to be able to promote this unique and stunning Nature Reserve and Bird Observatory around the world with this spectacular stamp issue. We would like to thank everyone involved for their invaluable support“ Find out more at iompost.com/calf-of-man 3

New Collection - issue date 11.06.21 The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to present the official licensed stamp collection in celebration of the UEFA EURO 2020 Championship. Founded in 1958, the tournament takes place every four years and is regarded as the finest display of European football. This issue celebrates the reintroduction of fans back into stadiums as well as a theme of togetherness across Europe through football. Postponed in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament will take place from 11th June – 11th July 2021, attracting the attention of a live audience of 5 billion viewers across Europe and the world. UEFA EURO 2020 is being held across the continent for the first time in the competition’s 60-year history, with action unfolding across 11 host cities. Amsterdam, Baku, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome, Seville and St. Petersburg all play host to the festival of football. Hampden Park in Glasgow will host the national team as Scotland hope to continue the dream having qualified for the tournament for the first time in 22 years. Wembley in London will have the attention of footballing fans across the world as hosts of both semi-finals as well as the final on the 11th July, just the second time England has hosted the final, the first being at UEFA EURO 1996 in which England heartbreakingly departed at the semi-final stage. England will be sure to have their eyes set on a home victory this time round. The tournament and the re-introduction of fans back to stadiums symbolises a return to normality during such recent times of separation. A crucial component to any live event, the sporting universe looks forward to welcoming back fans as they cheer on and support their teams to success. Our stamp designs celebrate the ways through which football can bring people together, following a theme of connection and unity during a time in which such privileges have been taken away. We utilise the official UEFA EURO 2020 artwork of host stadiums as well as iconic landmarks and scenery from eight host cities. In addition to this, the stamps are linked by a football pitch themed pathway as well as bridges, connecting fans across Europe through football.

The eight host cities selected for this Collection Baku – The first time Azerbaijan has hosted such a tournament, the Baku Olympic Stadium hosts Group A matches as well as a quarter final. The city hosted the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final.
Copenhagen – The largest stadium in Denmark, the Parken stadium will host Group B matches as well as a round of 16 match. The Nyhavn canal and the colourful houses alongside are pictured in order to represent the city. Denmark were crowned European champions with a 2-0 win over Germany in 1992 and will hope to repeat their famous victory this year. Glasgow – A British host of the tournament, Hampden Park will be a crucial advantage to Scotland, who will look to make history this summer. Having earned qualification in a tense match over Serbia in November 2020, Scotland feature in the tournament for just the third time in their history. London – One of the key venues and host of both semifinals and the final, Wembley in London is the epicentre of the tournament. England fans will dream of cheering their team on from the stands in the final match of the tournament on 11th July in their pursuit of the country’s first European Championship title.
Munich – The Football Arena Munich will host three Group F matches as well as a quarter final this summer. Germany have won the tournament three times; a joint record with Spain, and have played in six finals.
Rome – Host of the tournament’s opening game, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome is one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world. The 1968 final was played at the Stadio Olimpico and won by the host nation Italy, who will hope to repeat their country’s successes of the past.
Seville – The Estadio La Cartuja will host fans this summer. The city in southern Spain is presented alongside the stadium. Three time tournament winners Spain will hope to be victorious as they seek to be the most successful nation in European Championship history, their previous victory in 2012.
St. Petersburg – The second largest city in Russia, the Saint Petersburg stadium will be a hive of activity with seven matches scheduled to be played at the venue. St. Petersburg’s wealth of Baroque-style architecture is displayed next to the stadium.

The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to present this stamp issue celebrating 100 years of the Royal British Legion (RBL), one of the United Kingdom’s most important charities. Locally on our Island, the Royal British Legion serves a vital role at the heart of our community, with 10 branches and clubs across the Island. Ray Ferguson, Chairman of the Isle of Man Branch writes… In this centenary year of the Royal British Legion, it is perhaps proper to reflect on where our wonderful organisation here on the Isle of Man came from. During the first years of the Great War (1914-1918) more and more people found themselves affected by the devastating effects of war, disablement, and death. Authorities struggled to care for the steadily increasing numbers of disabled servicemen and their families. In response to the situation a number of ex-service associations were formed to alleviate the hardships that many service families were facing. The first of these, the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers was formed in 1916 with two others, the National Foundation of Discharged and Disabled Sailors and Soldiers, and Comrades of the Great War being constituted in 1917. A fourth group, The National Union of Ex-servicemen was formed in 1919. In 1921 these four main associations banded together to become the British Legion. Following a similar path as their UK comrades the first exservicemen’s association on the Isle of Man was the Manx Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers Association who were formed in 1917 and who subsequently became the Manx Legion and then the British Legion, Manx District. On 1st July 1945 we became Isle of Man County, British Legion and in 1971 H M The Queen awarded the organisation its ‘Royal’ prefix. We are rightly proud of our history and the work done by our members and volunteers to support the armed forces community. We remember the high price paid by the Isle of Man in two World Wars and those whom we lost or were injured in subsequent conflicts. It is particularly pleasing to see the service of two very different generations of Manxmen represented on the RBL Centenary stamps. Mr James Fenton, one of our oldest members and a veteran of the WW2 Burma Campaign and RAF Flying Officer Sam Randle representing today’s generation of Manx service personnel. Clemmie Hill, Marketing Manager of the Royal British Legion writes… The Royal British Legion was formed in the aftermath of the First World War to fight for the rights of those who had given so much and come back to so little. Today, it continues to stand with the 6
Armed Forces community and challenge injustices to ensure all those who have served and sacrificed on our behalf get the fair treatment and recognition they deserve. Throughout its history the RBL’s work has left a deeprooted legacy for generations to come and it remains dedicated to its mission of creating better futures for all those who serve with the British Armed Forces. It has evolved and adapted over time, responding to the changing needs of the Armed Forces community and reflecting the modern-day society in which they play an important role. The RBL has always been supported by a network of volunteers, members, fundraisers and partner organisations who share its passion for bringing people together to support, commemorate and celebrate the Armed Forces community. In this, its centenary year, the Royal British Legion is firmly focused on the future and using its 100 years of experience supporting the Armed Forces community to build an organisation fit for the next 100. Perhaps best known for its annual Poppy Appeal and Remembrance services, the Legion is a campaigning organisation that promotes the welfare and interests of current and former members of the British Armed Forces – although service is no longer a membership requirement. In its modern iteration, the Legion has approx. 2,500 branches with more than 235,000 members nationwide. Ben Glazier, Managing Director of Glazier Design writes… Each stamp has a foreground and background image and hidden layers. In the foreground we meet the people who have made the RBL what it is.Volunteers, carers, members and beneficiaries. In the background we see locations important to the RBL and to members, including where they train, serve, rehabilitate, spend their final years, and where they are remembered. The sky of each stamp is made up of micro text visible under a magnifying glass, bearing the names of people important to the RBL, the Isle of Man and this issue as well as two lines per stamp of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. There is one more secret that awaits; under UV light, a red poppy is revealed, printed in a special fluorescing ink. We are honoured and privileged to have had the opportunity to create these stamps and we hope they bring recognition for the RBL for the many things they do that we don’t know or think about.
