Welcome to our Autumn 2021 Newsletter Greetings from a very autumnal Douglas! As I look out of our Stamps & Coins window which is located at the front of POHQ it is very blustery with leaves swirling high into the sky. Hop-tu-Naa a Celtic festival celebrated in the Isle of Man on 31 October is just around the corner. It is the celebration of the traditional Celtic festival of Samhain, the start of winter, which is thought to be the oldest unbroken tradition in the Isle of Man. Island schoolchildren start half term soon so not long till homes around the Island will be glowing from the light of carved turnips and pumpkins. Here Paul, Charlie and I feel like we need to go back to school to solve the puzzles created for our celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Mensa which is included within this newsletter, I hope you have a go, please let us know how you get along - 20 prizes of Manx Kippers to be won for all those who send in correct answers on a postcard by the 15th December 2021. For those of you who remember the many varied issues designed by Collen Corlett back in the 1980s and 90’s, you will be very pleased to note that
Colleen has once again put her distinctive style to the Captain John Quilliam issue, welcome back Colleen and sincere thanks. If you ever get the chance to visit Arbory Church take time to study Colleen’s magnificent design for the Quilliam stained glass window. In summing up 2021 it has been our great pleasure to have “stayed connected to you”, we are hugely appreciative of the support you show Isle of Man Stamps and Coins, often we feel very humbled by your comments. Take care and all good wishes

ON THE ROAD TO THE ISLE OF MAN MOTOR MUSEUM Marking the release of our Transport Museums of the Isle of Man – On The Road stamp issue, on the 19th July, members of the six featured museums gathered at the Isle of Man Motor Museum in celebration of the collection ahead of its release on the 28th July 2021. This collection focuses on road vehicles and is a tribute to the selflessly-dedicated enthusiasts who restore and preserve an extraordinary assortment of machines for the Manx public and visitors to enjoy. The issue date – 28th July 2021, coincides with Heritage Transport Week which took place from 28th July - 1st August 2021. As part of the official launch of the stamp issue we had the pleasure to meet up with the museums involved who were presented with their individual stamp board. These are now displayed at each museum. To mark the occasion, a group picture was taken in front of the Isle of Man Motor Museum (below).

Isle of Man Branch of the Royal British Legion Audrey Brown MBE – RBL Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator - ‘Service not Self’ (RBL motto) “It was with sadness I heard that Audrey had passed away on the 3rd October 2021. The last time I spoke with her was at the RBL100 reception at Government House in May where I thanked her for help provided in bringing our RBL100 tribute together. I asked a colleague how he would best describe her, ‘Without doubt the most totally focussed Poppy Appeal Coordinator in the RBL, with the result that year on year the Isle of Man was presented with the Poppy Appeal Trophy for the most funds raised per head of population’. He was reminded also that up to very recently she would place a Poppy Cross on every single memorial around the Island in the days leading up to the 11th November.” Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
Annual Gathering MENSA 75th Manchester 1st October 2021 It was our pleasure to send a frame of philatelic material to the UK branch of MENSA in time for their Annual Gathering in Manchester on the 1st October. Around 300 members regularly attend the Gathering from around the UK. As a special gesture for their 75th Anniversary we produced a postcard as it also coincided with world postcard day so members could share the puzzles with counterparts around the world. Pictured are British Mensa Chief Executive Cath Hill (left) and Chairman Chris Leek (right).
Stay connected sheetlet To coincide with Thinking of You Week in September we issued a sheetlet of stamps, labels and matching postcards. The stamps chosen were the Triskelions from 2017. In their original format they were issued as self - adhesives on this occasion they are gummed. Isle of Man Post Office celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the birth of one of the Island’s most famous sons. Frank Cowin writes… Captain John Quilliam is a much celebrated Manx hero but is not well known elsewhere. This despite him being the third most senior person on HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar where it is claimed he steered her into the battle. Christened in St Runius & Buried in Arbory - 1st Class Value His life began and ended in his native Isle of Man. Born in the only parish with no coastline he was christened in St Runius Church, Marown on 29th September 1771. He died at the Whitehouse, Kirk Michael, on 10th October 1829 but was buried in the vault of his wife’s family, the Stevensons, at Arbory Parish Church. Arbory primary school enact events from Quilliam’s life in the church every Trafalgar Day, 21st October, and following this the British Legion join them to lay wreaths on his tomb. John Quilliam the Royal Navy & the Ambassador in China - EU Value Despite the popular story Quilliam was not ‘pressed’, but from the age of 14 worked for the Admiralty in the Portsmouth Dockyards before transferring to the Navy when he joined HMS Lion in May 1792. HMS Lion took British Ambassador Lord Macartney to China to negotiate trade terms with the Emperor. There were many misunderstandings, including the Ambassador refusing to kowtow (kneel before the Emperor with his forehead touching the floor), and as a result the negotiations were unsuccessful. The trip took over two years and by the time they returned Britain was at war with France.

John Quilliam in the Battle of Camperdown - Large Letter Value John Quilliam was involved in three major naval battles before Trafalgar. First the Battle of Groix on 23rd June 1795, then on HMS Triumph at the Battle of Camperdown where during the battle he was made an Acting Lieutenant; later qualifying to make it permanent. He served under Captain Riou as a Lieutenant at Copenhagen in 1801 where Nelson used their ship, HMS Amazon, to
finalise his battle plan. Riou was killed during the battle and later replaced by Captain Sam Sutton. During the return to Britain, Nelson used Amazon as his Flag Ship and they then served in the battles and skirmishes around Boulogne. Once peace was negotiated Quilliam was able to return to the Isle of Man. The stamp depicts the battle of Camperdown and the medallion shows the British Admiral Duncan receiving the Dutch Admiral de Winter’s sword in surrender. HMS Ethalion takes Thetis & Quilliam is a Rich Man Rest of the World Value Prior to Copenhagen Quilliam was a Lieutenant on HMS Ethalion when, in October 1799, they captured Thetis, a Spanish Treasure Ship, laden with Silver Dollars. Quilliam’s share of the prize money was £5090 which, today, would be the equivalent of a sizeable lottery win. Many of the Silver Dollars were later overstruck by the Royal Mint to show the head of King George III on the portrait of Carlos IV of Spain. The popular joke was that it was “The head of a fool on the neck of an Ass!” In December 1799 HMS Ethalion ran onto rocks at night in a storm but all the crew were rescued safely. Victory at Trafalgar - USA Value In 1803 when the peace failed, Quilliam was called back to serve on HMS Victory at first under Sam Sutton and then, when Nelson arrived, Captain Hardy. Nelson appointed Quilliam as first Lieutenant and he served as such in the Mediterranean, during the ‘Long Chase’ to the West Indies and back, The Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson and the struggle to Gibraltar after the battle. Quilliam was immediately promoted to Commander and later Captain of the Bomb Ship Aetna. Later Quilliam brought back to Britain one of the few prize ships salvaged after Trafalgar. The left hand side of the stamp is a scene from the battle; and the right hand side shows the Memorial window put in Arbory Church by the Quilliam Group and which was designed and made by Colleen Corlett, the designer of this set of stamps.
John Quilliam MHK & Balcony House Castletown EU Large Letter Value On his return to the Isle of Man Quilliam was made a Member of the House of Keys, but after two years was called back to sea to serve first in Home waters, then in the Baltic and finally on the North American Station. During this time he had resigned from The Keys (their building shown to the left on the stamp) but was reappointed on finally retiring from the Navy. Soon after he married Margaret Christian Stevenson and they used Balcony House (seen in the centre of the stamp) as their town house. When The Keys met with others as Tynwald they met in Castle Rushen (seen to the right). In the foreground is the
sculpture of John Quilliam, by Bryan Kneale RA, which was relocated last year to Castletown harbourside. It was to be no quiet retirement as he was very involved with Sir William Hillary in the founding of what is now the RNLI. He co-operated with George Quayle of Bridge House in a number of ventures and with others in improving the design of Manx fishing boats. With John Christian Curwen he was involved in the battles which led to the end of the Duke of Atholl’s interests in the Island. Ill health caused him to move to Kirk Michael where he died. B

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mensa. British Mensa, the world’s oldest and most famous high IQ society was founded in Oxford on 1st October 1946, it began with a chance conversation on a train in 1945, between Australian lawyer Roland Berrill and English law student and scientist Lance Ware. They discovered a shared interest in IQ, which over time led to conversations about forming a high IQ club. The name Mensa – which is Latin for table – was chosen to highlight the round table nature of the society where every member is equal. The society aims to recruit people with an IQ in the top two per cent of the population. There was not – and still isn’t – any other criterion. On 22nd April 1946, Lance Ware received a letter from Berrill enclosing ideas for the club which he wanted Lance and his sister, the third founding member, to consider. It was to have a monthly journal called Mens which was Latin for mind. Lance thought that would cause confusion with another publication entitled Men Only so the name Mensa was chosen, and Mensa Magazine for the journal. ‘Mensa’ Berrill said, “was the first Latin word pupils were taught at school”. The society now boasts more than 140,000 members in more than 100 countries around the world – including the Isle of Man. British Mensa chief executive Cath Hill says: “Mensa’s 75th anniversary is a huge milestone for the society and we are
delighted that the Isle of Man Post Office has chosen to celebrate it with us by issuing this beautiful set of stamps.” Anyone who meets the criteria can join by taking a publicly accessible test and there are members of all ages, from all walks of life. What you think of as intelligence might not be what gets you admission; in a world where neuro-diversity is increasingly recognised, the organisation remains proudly accepting of anyone, regardless of race, religion or gender. Our stamps are based on puzzles, the kind of brain-teasers that Mensa is known for, can you solve them all? Our stamps also contain many codes, layers of information, a cypher and references to places that are important to the organisation. In a global first, we have added what3words references to important Mensa places and locations on the Isle of Man. The app what3words is an incredibly clever way of giving a location, every 3 metre square of the world has been given a unique combination of three words. We hope you enjoy solving the codes and visiting the locations in our stamps. To find the solutions, visit the Isle of Man Stamps & Coins (iomstamps.com) and Mensa (mensa.org.uk) websites or check out the small print within this newsletter.

Isle of Man Post Office presents festive cheer in the form of six jolly seasonal railway stamps… Our set features Thomas and Friends wintering on the Isle of Man while celebrating all the fun of Christmas railway excursions in the beautiful scenery that typifies our world-famous transport heritage network. One of the most successful and widely-known characters in children’s literature, Thomas the Tank Engine is universally-recognised and much-loved by readers of all ages. He first appeared in his own volume in 1946, the second of the Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s books in the series, making this year the 75th anniversary of publication.
Collectors may recall that in 1995, the Isle of Man Post Office released a set of six Thomas the Tank Engine stamps in which Thomas dreamt that he visited his friend, Caledonia on the Isle of Man.
