Welcome to our Winter 2022 Newsletter Dear Friends, I hope when you read my welcome the thought of spring days is upon us and that the spring flowers are peeking out above the ground. For our friends in the southern hemisphere autumn leaves for you… We are delighted to present with this newsletter our new issues which feature the work of four very different artists who all have their roots firmly in Manx soil: Anya Jackson, Nancy Corkish & David Byrne and Michael Sandle. During the preparation of their issues I have been very moved by each of them always having an aspiration to see their work on an Isle of Man stamp. I hope you enjoy their stories as much as I did. The 6th February 2022 was a very historic day for H M Queen Elizabeth II Lord of Mann, being 70 years since her accession to the throne. Here on the Isle of Man we have been honoured with many Royal visits but, for me, the most memorable was in 2003 when H M Queen Elizabeth II, along with HRH Prince Philip, came to our Island to preside over the Court of Tynwald on 5th July.
Our former manager Dot Tilbury, Janet Bridge and I presented Her Majesty with an album of our Golden Jubilee collections. It was the most glorious summer’s day and to actually present our stamps made it one of the proudest of my Post Office career. To know that all the collections we have issued since 1973 form part of the Royal Philatelic Collection for future generations to enjoy is very humbling. With heartfelt thanks for your interest in our collections from all the team at Isle of Man Stamps & Coins. Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
PRESENTATION TO HIS EXCELLENCY SIR JOHN LORIMER, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF THE ISLE OF MAN AND LADY LORIMER MBE BY THE ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE On 4th February, to commemorate the release of the Platinum Jubilee stamp issue, representatives of Isle of Man Post Office were thrilled to be invited by His Excellency Lieutenant General Sir John Lorimer KCB DSO MBE and Lady Philippa Lorimer MBE to Government House to begin the Island’s first of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in this very special year. We were delighted to present His Excellency with a framed sheet set from the Platinum Jubilee
collection. He remarked “Her Majesty the Queen, Lord of Mann, has reigned through an extraordinary period of history, with steadfastness, dignity and grace. It is indeed an honour to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this year and I am delighted that the Isle of Man has produced these wonderful stamps in commemoration of a truly remarkable monarch, who has given so much to so many over her 70 year reign.”

THOMAS & FRIENDS AT THE ISLE OF MAN RAILWAYS Last Christmas, Stamps & Coins were delighted to support the Isle of Man Railways Polar Express Christmas Trains with our Thomas & Friends stamp issue. Children on board the festive services were encouraged to write letters to Father Christmas and were thrilled to post their messages to the North Pole. Each letter was sent with a stamp from the Thomas & Friends collection affixed and was posted in a special gold post box at Douglas station.
YEAR OF THE TIGER ARTIST ANYA JACKSON UNVEILS LUNAR NEW YEAR STAMP ISSUE In celebration of the Lunar New Year, we welcomed illustrator Anya Jackson to our Postal Headquarters to mark the release of our latest issue. The four stamps, valued at 67p, £1.71, £2.32 and £3.89, feature traditional Chinese pottery forms alongside the customary use of gold metallic ink. Each stamp also portrays a different facet of the Tiger mythology. Anya said: “This is a dream; since first discovering just how beautiful the stamp sets are that the Isle of Man Post Office releases, I’ve been keen to work together – I think it’s been years in the making! There’s something very special about collaborating with a client you’ve always admired and share roots with.”
A VISIT TO CREGNEASH Marking the release of the Creneash, y Balley Ain – Our Cregneash Home stamp issue, we caught up with artist David Byrne at his home in Cregneash to share the stamps. David was thrilled to see his work, and that of his late partner Nancy Corkish, shared in this issue. Focused on their paintings inspired by the surrounding landscape at the southern tip of the Island, this issue captures the dramatic scenery so familiar to both David and Nancy. Upon seeing the printed stamps, David said: “I am delighted and honoured to see the work of Nancy and myself paired together on these stamps. We have lived at Cregneash for many years, witnessing all seasons and the dramatic effects of nature on the landscape. I hope the artworks of our home are enjoyed by many.” 3

Continuing the Isle of Man Post Office’s association with the Chinese New Year we present the Year of the Tiger. The first day of February 2022 marks the beginning of one of the most prominently celebrated festivals on the planet represented this year by the adventurous, courageous, impulsive and passionate Tiger! Chinese New Year is a major holiday in Greater China and has strongly influenced the lunar new year celebrations of China’s neighbouring cultures, including the Korean New Year, the Tet of Vietnam, and the Losar of Tibet. The event remains the cause of the largest annual mass human migration in the world. The Tiger is the third of all zodiac animals. The mythology tells that the Jade Emperor decreed the list of signs would be placed in the order in which they arrived at his party. The Ox set off the night before and was first. The Tiger arrived early the next morning and was second. Rat secretly climbed onto Ox and jumped down when he saw the Jade Emperor. So the Ox and Tiger were pushed back to second and third. Despite his protests, the Tiger could only settle with being the third sign of the zodiac. In Chinese culture Tigers are seen as guardian figures of children, and infants and babies wear shoes and hats with tiger designs to protect against evil spirits. Tigers are courageous, determined and active people who rarely feel tired, love a good challenge and adventure in life and never 4
give up and are well-suited to occupations that call for imagination and stamina. While they are capable of being headstrong and hard to control they are also kind and benevolent. Tigers are born leaders, rather than working to live, they live to work. A high position leadership or management position would be the best fit. Typifying these characteristics, famous people born under the sign include: Queen Elizabeth II, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Munroe, Stevie Wonder and Usain Bolt. This issue continues the Isle of Man Post Office’s strong association with the theme and our own tradition of offering younger Manx designers their first opportunity to design stamps. In this suitably spirited set Ana has incorporated aspects of the Tiger’s mythology: the sign’s celebrated courage; the cosmological link to the element of water; Tiger’s compatibility with the Horse, and the auspicious association with plum blossom. The inclusion of traditional Chinese pottery forms alongside the customary use of gold metallic ink is apposite for this quintessentially Chinese celebration. Understanding the global appeal and relevance of the event during the current uncertain Covid-19 restrictions, we hope this issue will reach many of those who may be unable to celebrate the occasion as they usually would.

HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II - 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ACCESSION TO THE THRONE In recognition of this historic occasion, the Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to present a set of eight stamps drawing inspiration from the words of the national anthem God Save the Queen at the time the Nation, Commonwealth, Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories come together to pay tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to showcase the long and fruitful artistic partnership of David Byrne and Nancy Corkish who lived together for nearly three decades in the closest dwelling to the rugged southern tip of the Isle of Man until Nancy’s death in January 2021. Inspired by the atmospheric landscape and strong sense of place, they produced hundreds of watercolour paintings which have been enjoyed by a great many people on the Island. As a Manx speaker David enthusiastically agreed to use the Manx issue title Creneash, y Balley Ain to more closely associate with the soul of this most beautiful and protected ancient landscape. The title has been supplied by Culture Vannin’s Yn Greinneyder and translates as Cregneash, Our Home. The subjects encompass the peninsula to capture the varied topography, dramatic skies, changing seasonal weather and the sense of belonging that both artists felt and shared. In the final two images of the set both artists feature their home in context as part of the view to the Calf of Man. David Byrne began to devote more time to painting seriously in 1956, having forsaken long-distance running. David took early inspiration to paint the Manx landscape from the work of William Hoggatt and the example and friendship of Norman Howell while later developing great admiration for the watercolours of Archibald Knox and Norman Sayle. Having braved the seasons painting in the open air David eventually took to working from his car, where location drawings and colour notes would evolve for use later at home where he could enlarge the image and attempt to distil a sense of place and to ‘capture the moment’ he had earlier experienced. Multiple visits to familiar locations might result in seeing the scene differently and the outcome could be a fresh approach and a new painting, as he comments: ‘Nature is never the same twice, and you’re not the same twice’…‘on the Isle of Man the weather can change six times in half an hour, and that‘s what I like.’ 8
He believes that it has taken him many years to tune and develop his palette to capture the distinctive subtleties of colour found in the Manx landscape. David turned ninety in 2021 and still lives in their Cregneash cottage. Like Nancy he has been a well-known figure in the Manx art scene for decades, with paintings in a great many Manx collections, but this is his first set of stamps. Nancy Corkish is best known to stamp collectors as the artist behind the landmark ‘Manx Cats’ issue of 1996, though she first shared an artwork credit with John Nicholson RI in 1986. She was born in Yorkshire and moved to the Island in 1957 where she soon became involved in art courses and exhibitions at the IOM College and with the IOM Arts Society under the notable influences of George Crellin and Norman Sayle. Nancy was highly versatile and produced an impressive range of commissions and independent works for over sixty years. Known for her consummate nature studies, often incorporating meticulous drawing, her work became well-known and much sought-after on the Island. She was primarily a landscape painter who became focused on painting personal emotion through observation in her work. Her sensitivity to environment and her determination to capture its essence is evident in her own words: “The Island is geared towards watercolour painting. It could be with the sea being all round it and you get a lot of moisture in the air, you get this sort of veil over things. You can wake one day and it will be a pinky, mauve day or it can be a greeny, grey day, or it can be a really golden day and you do get feelings about the light. I think the Isle of Man is very sympathetic to watercolours because of the subtlety of the light.”

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a selection of major public works by the world-renowned sculptor and printmaker Michael Sandle RA. Michael was brought up and studied on the Isle of Man before embarking on an illustrious career in art and education which now spans more than sixty years. Michael Sandle RA writes… The Lifeboat Men Memorial in the Marine Gardens in Douglas, Isle of Man is the most difficult sculpture I have ever attempted. As the lifeboat needed fourteen men on board and had to be in forced perspective that was problematic enough. As Sir William Hilary had taken command of the tiller the coxswain and one other crew member had to sit at either the side of the boat which meant one of the crew had his back to the viewer and I had to really struggle with the scale of this figure, so much so I came very close to abandoning the project. I didn’t use models and all of the lifeboat men are modelled from memory. The Malta WW2 Siege Memorial was erected in 1992 and came about because I was asked by the then president of the Mercantile Marine branch of the George Cross Island Association, who had closely followed my career, to design a memorial for ‘Operation Pedestal,’ the code name for the convoy that saved Malta from capitulation in World War II. This is the most important commission of my life and I was able to choose the perfect site for it at the entrance to the Grand Harbour in Valletta, design all of the architecture and execute the bronze figure - representing all of the dead of that conflict - and include at the heart of the memorial a 13 tonne bell that rings every midday. This bell was inspired by the ‘Maria Gloriosa,’ the most famous bell in all Christendom which hangs in Erfurt Cathedral, Germany. St George and the Dragon is sited in Blackfriars, London and is, I believe, a successful public sculpture because the all-important scale is right and it enhances the architecture. My St George is standing up in his stirrups straining to kill the dragon and he and his horse are set at an alarming angle. The idea originally was for the dragon to appear to be winning as a metaphor for Thatcher’s Britain but, as no business concern would have the courage to display something quite so anti-establishment, I toned it down to St George nearly having to break his neck to succeed. 10
The International Seafarers’ Memorial is sited at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on the Albert Embankment in London and is by far the largest bronze of my career. I knew at the outset that I would have to have a classic cargo ship that appeared to be sailing out of the building. The sculpture was designed to be seen from within the IMO building as well as in front of it and, seen from the second storey, the ship seems to broach the Thames, For some strange reason the seafarer standing on the bow of the ship looks uncannily like my late father who was a himself a sailor, although in the Royal Navy. The Viking sculpture is on the exterior of a former neoGothic church in Port Erin on the Isle of Man. Originally it was intended that a sculpture of mine be placed in front of the bricked-up entrance to this deconsecrated church, which is now the Erin Arts Centre. I decided however to turn the unsightly bricked-up doorway into a relief sculpture depicting a birds-eye-view of a Viking funeral. The subject chose itself as Vikings are part of Manx history and I am pleased with the spontaneity of the modelling of the figure central to this work. The four-horned Manx loaghtan sheep suggested itself effortlessly. A Twentieth Century War Memorial is about the obscenity of war. The impetus to make it stemmed from my finding myself in the middle of a student riot against the escalation by Nixon of the war in Vietnam in the 1970s at the University of California, Berkeley. The riot was put down with some force by the National Guard and, as I was fleeing down Telegraph Avenue, I realized I had to make a sculpture about it. A knee-jerk reaction caused me to think of it first as a ‘Mickey Mouse Monument for Amerika’ until, after doing my homework, I discovered that the seeds for the Vietnam war had been sown by the British in 1945 after VJ Day during the Atlee government where, astonishingly, we fought alongside the Japanese against Ho Chi Minh and his followers. We even used Spitfires against the Vietnamese so I changed the title to illustrate universal duplicity.
