Winter

Dear Friends,

It was with real sadness I heard the news on Manx Radio just after 6.30pm on the evening of 8th September that H M Queen Elizabeth II Lord of Mann had passed away. Like so many I will always remember the time and where I was…

The days that followed were a real mix of emotions and remembering events where the path of Isle of Man Stamps and Coins crossed with that of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family.

At the same time there were a number of more immediate practical issues while considered and planned for which now had to be actioned. For instance all of our new issues from 14th September were put on hold as a mark of respect and in accordance with guidelines from Buckingham Palace.

As time went on the picture became clearer, our last new issue to feature the effigy of H M Queen Elizabeth II would be Manx Winter Scenes as they had been approved prior to her demise, I think this is very fitting as they feature local scenes somewhat reminiscent of the 7p Laxey Wheel stamp issued in our very first definitive set at the time of postal independence in July 1973.

We also had issues awaiting approval at the Palace which hadn’t completed the royal approval petition process, they will now be resubmitted with the new cypher of King Charles III, Lord of Mann. I think his

cypher is very elegant so hopefully by the start of 2023 we will be in a position to release our first issue of the Carolean era which is derived from Carolus – the Latin for Charles.

In closing, 2022 has seen postal tributes like David Bowie: Actor, which have taken many years to come to fruition. The highs of the Platinum Jubilee, the sense of pride in celebrating all things Manx through issues such as , Culture Vannin, The Creative Network, Michael Sandle, Cregneash, y Balley Ain and so on…but without you, our much valued collector, none of it would be possible. So from the entire team at Isle of Man Post Office a heartfelt thanks and all good wishes to you and your family for the Festive Season.

MANX WINTER CONCLUDES USE OF THE CYPHER OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II LORD OF MANN

We are delighted to release our festive issue for 2022 entitled Manx Winter by local artist Julia Ashby Smyth. This beautifully presented collection shares 6 distinctively Manx and Celticinspired illustrations, portraying the transformation of our Island during the winter months as we welcome the festive season and Christmas time. How many of the locations do you recognise?

Julia commented “I am delighted and honoured that these watercolours have been chosen

for the new ‘winter’ issue. Inspired by captured moments, most often whilst out walking, bundled up in layers of wool, the cold air nipping at my nose, these scenes bring back many happy memories. The Agneash image, for instance, was painted after a very happy day sledging down snowy slopes. I walked home through an entirely golden pink landscape, even the seagulls were pink. Winter light is exquisite, creating spectacular colours, deeply hued shadows and extraordinarily beautiful skies.”

This issue marks the final Isle of Man Stamp collection to be approved Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

News Highlights 3

Isle of Man Post Office presents six of the most notorious and significant shipwrecks in the waters off the Isle of Man over a period of almost five-hundred years.

Many hundreds of ships have met their final fate around the coast of the Isle of Man. The Island’s central location in the Irish Sea and proximity to major shipping routes have been factors in centuries of losses.

Patache Sancta CatalinaThe Spanish Head Armada Wreck 1588 Folk tradition says a Spanish Armada galleon was wrecked in the south of the Island at Spanish Head. People native to Rushen parish are said to have certain Spanish features after survivors married local women, and even today the term ‘Spaniard’ is often heard as a colloquial term for a Manx person from Rushen. Even that most Manx of Manx things, the tail-less cat, is said to have its origins from one that scrambled ashore after the ship was wrecked. Recent research suggests that the vessel was the Sancta Catalina. A patache rather than a galleon, she was a fast and agile type of ship used primarily as a scouting vessel.

HMS Brig Racehorse - The Skerranes, Langness 14th December 1822

HMS Racehorse was bound for Douglas to collect the crew of the cutter Vigilant when she struck Langness. Two boats were launched from the Racehorse to seek local help. Despite rough seas, one local boat made several journeys to the wreck. However, on the final journey back to Castletown a large wave swamped the boat drowning five naval crew and three local men.

Sir William Hillary saw the importance of support for the families of lost rescuers. Such provisions became a pillar of a new national life saving institution in 1824, the forerunner of the RNLI.

Brig Lily - Kitterland in the Calf Sound 27th December 1852

The Lily, bound for southwest Africa, with a general cargo, including 61 tons of gunpowder, was caught off the Calf of Man in a storm and driven ashore on Kitterland in the Calf Sound killing five of her crew. Early the next day a salvage party observed smoke coming from the wreck. Carpenters cut a hole in the deck to extinguish the fire. As soon as air entered the hold there was a huge explosion which killed 29 men. People nearby thought that an earthquake had occurred.

During 1899 a Manxman, who had emigrated to America, confessed on his death bed, to leaving a candle burning on the Lily while attempting to loot the wreck before the salvage party arrived.

Barque Thorne - Port Jack, Onchan 25th January 1890

The Manx version of Whisky Galore! Heavy seas burst open the ship’s main hatch, and cargo, including whisky and brandy in casks, floated out. The police and customs officials were at hand to try and prevent pilfering, but many individuals still managed to obtain large quantities of spirits, leading to amazing scenes of public drunkenness.

Customs officers placed twenty casks of spirits in a cave to protect them from the plunderers, but people clambered down and drank from the casks. The officers caught them, kicked the cask over spilling the drink. But the plunderers just took off their seaboots, filled them with the spilt whisky, and carried on drinking!

Steamship Clan MacMaster - The Calf Sound 30th September 1923

During dense fog the Clan MacMaster struck the Thousla Rock in the Calf Sound whilst on a voyage from Glasgow for the Far East via Liverpool. She was carrying a general cargo consisting mainly of motorcars, sewing machines, machinery, coal and cotton.

She is the largest ship to have been wrecked on the Manx coast. Many homes in the south of the Isle of Man proudly owned a brand new Singer sewing machine after the wreck!

Steam Trawler CevicBallure, Ramsey 26th June 1927

At 3am the second engineer got into the small boat moored alongside the Cevic, to row ashore to collect four men. The rope attaching it to the trawler snapped, and he was cast adrift. His crew mates feared that he would be in great danger in the rough seas. They weighed anchor and attempted to reach the small boat, but failed and the Cevic ran aground on rocks below Ballure on Ramsey South Beach. The small boat narrowly missed being wrecked on the Carrick in Ramsey Bay and landed at Port Lewaigue. The wreck was a major attraction for tourists during that summer.

The Isle of Man is a special place for wildlife, both above and below water; with over 87% of its territory being marine. Under the waves, beyond the view of many, the topography, strong tidal currents and relatively clean waters has created a myriad of diverse marine habitats and species, many of which are as bright and colourful as their tropical counterparts.

The majority of our 160km coastline is rocky reef and this creates a beautiful underwater habitat, a marine forest. The kelp provides canopy cover anchoring to the rock with its holdfasts like trees in a Manx Glen. Beneath this are seaweeds and animals that grow on the stipe (stem) or hide amongst the fronds (leaves) as birds and other plants would inhabit on land. Lastly the understorey is made up of many more seaweeds and animals, such as sea urchins, sponges, sea squirts and starfish. Often the smaller cryptic species can be found hiding between the branching holdfast.

Away from the rocky coastline, often in deeper water, out of the reach of sunlight is the soft sediment habitats. Their hidden animals buried in the seabed only hint at what lies beneath, such as worms and molluscs. One such species, the ocean quahog, a bivalve mollusc, is one of the oldest lived animals on the planet, with one individual found to be 507 years old. This also provides habitat for two of our commercial species, King and Queen scallops who can be found resting on the sea floor.

Much research has been undertaken in Manx waters over the centuries by marine scientists including the famous Manxman Edward Forbes. Not forgetting the many scientists and students who studied at the Marine Biological Station in Port Erin, where much exploration and investigation has been undertaken over the lifetime of the lab. This has given us a good understanding of the marine life that can be found in Manx waters and the processes that shape them. This work has highlighted the diversity that these marine waters have to offer and the huge amount of life that they support, from the little to the large. From plankton, to anemones, snails, crabs, fish and our larger marine life such as basking sharks, cetaceans and seals.

Some of these species and habitats are of conservation significance, both nationally and internationally. They can provide nursery grounds and shelter for many species resulting in increased diversity and richness. Maerl, a calcified red seaweed,

is the favoured choice for settlement of Queen scallop spat and helps trap carbon.

Another carbon capturing species is seagrass, the only truly marine flowering plant. It’s even thought to sequester more carbon than some forest habitats. Whilst horse mussel reefs provide shelter for many juvenile species and their reef structures also helps lock away carbon.

Fortunately, many of these important habitats and species are protected through the Manx Wildlife Act and the 10 Marine Nature Reserves that surround our coastline. They cover 51.8% of our coastal waters (0-3nm) which equates to just over 10% of our total territorial waters.

Many of us have been lucky enough to witness some of our amazing marine life, such as our cetaceans or seals, but below the waves there are many more remarkable species to observe with their vast array of diversity and richness, as reflected in this set of stamps.

Jewel Anemone - Corynactis Viridis

These small but colourful anemones form large congregations on rocky walls and over hangs in areas of high tidal movement where they use their tentacles to catch organic particles in the water. One anemone has around 100 tentacles, each with a small round blob on the end. Although seen in orange upon the stamp, they come in a variety of colours including pink, yellow, purple, red, green and brown.

Queen Scallop (Queenie) - Aequipecten Opercularis

One of our five main commercial fishery species, this bivalve has two curved shells compared to the King scallop which has a curved lower shell and a flat top shell. They are also smaller and are more vigorous swimmers. Their shells are often covered by a sponge which is thought to benefit both parties. The sponge is less likely to be eaten by a predator and it helps to keep starfish off the queenie.

Cushion Starfish - Asterina phylactica

A small starfish found on the shore or shallow subtidal waters. It can grow up to 15mm across with five arms. They feed on dead plant and animal matter. Individuals are simultaneous hermaphrodites and during breeding season will form small aggregations of up to 10 individuals to ensure cross breeding. They then brood the eggs by laying over the top of them, remaining with the breeding aggregation until the eggs hatch.

Squat Lobster - Galathea Squamifera

They look like something between a crab and a lobster with their long flattened bodies and tucked under tails, generally hiding in crevices between rocks. This species is chestnut, red brown in colour with a greenish hint and red tipped spines. It can reach lengths of 65mm, with a carapace length up to 35mm. This species is thought to be mainly a filter feeder, eating suspended organic matter, but will also scavenge for food.

Violet Sea Slug - Edmundsella Pedata

There are several species of sea slugs found in Manx waters but few are as colourful as the violet sea slug or nudibranch, although the colours of other species do vary and can be bold, bright and beautiful. The violet sea slug is a common species in Manx waters. These small slugs feed on even smaller animals called hydroids that grow in colonies on seaweeds and rocks. Small Spotted Catshark (also known as the lesser spotted dogfish) - Scyliorhinus Canicula

This small shark species is commonly seen by divers around the Island.

It is greyish brown in colour with numerous dark spots and a white belly. Catsharks hunt at night, eating a variety of prey that includes crabs, bottom dwelling fish such as gobies, and small molluscs. Their empty egg cases often wash up on the shore and are commonly known as mermaids’ purses.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this set of six stamps showcasing our Island through beautiful wintery artwork by local artist Julia Ashby Smyth

Snow in the Isle of Man can be a magical thing. Often a whole winter can go by with no more than the odd ‘dusting on the tops’, and definitely not enough to get the sledge out for.

So when it does snow, our landscape is transformed; the light changes and sounds are altered. If it happens overnight, you wake to a different world.

Snowflakes drift through branches, carpeting glens; sunsets bounce off the glittering surface in a myriad of fantastical colours and crunchy footsteps mix with the laughter of adults and children alike.

Impossibly white against laden grey skies, tiny ice crystals and frost re-sculpt bent ferns and stone walls; long blue and purple shadows plays across its folds and undulations.

Each stamp tries to capture an essence of these things. Laxey Wheel – Sometimes a winter sky is so intensely blue that it defies its season. A wintery walk to the far side of the Laxey Wheel on such a day revealed every detail in sharp clarity, from the redness of the flags to the yellowness of the flowering gorse.

Ballabeg Stop A sprinkling of snow and a festively festooned station is incredibly atmospheric, steam and smoke pluming great clouds into a lilac sky, the giggly excitement of Christmas palpable in the air.

Sulby Methodist Church – You can drive past a building regularly without really noticing it. Surround it with snow, and suddenly it takes centre stage. A late afternoon petrol blue sky counterpointed the slate, bringing out the golden tones in the stonework. Low light, along with the buttery glow from the stained glass windows created a delicious warmth. Starlings and sparrows vied for prime roosts in the bright variegated holly tree, their songs, beeps and twitterings filled the air.

Onchan Church Hall - Walking up a snowy Royal Avenue on the way to post some Christmas cards gave the perfect opportunity to appreciate the architecture of Baillie Scott’s Onchan Church Hall, the lights within radiating through the red hearts in the windows, a welcoming glow spilling out through the open door.

Groudle – Taking a walk through Groudle Glen on a fresh bright winter morning, the snow had dusted the rocks and paths creating a pristine canvas on which to drop and criss-cross of sharp edged azure shadows. These along with the icy cold silvers and greys of the stream brought an atmosphere of an arctic wonderland.

Agneash – Whilst living up in Agneash we were snowed in for two weeks. The only way to get supplies was to walk down to Laxey. The advantages of this was being able to watch the whole valley, including the smoke from chimneys and the bare bushes, turn ever deeper shades of pink as the sun dipped.
