Dot’s Message Chaghteraght Dot is in the air and we attended exhibition with The Isle of Man Family History S pring two exhibitions in London - Spring Society, our Department of Tourism and Manx Stampex at the Design Centre, Islington and the BBC’s ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ exhibition at Olympia. We teamed up with our friends from Guernsey, Jersey and Gibraltar for Stampex and Sue Corkill, of our customer service department, manned our stand. Sue is no stranger to Stampex and was delighted to meet all the regulars who make the journey down to the metropolis. The Royal Engagement miniature sheet was the star of the show and public reaction illustrated what a popular couple Prince William and Kate are with the majority of people.
National Heritage - whose presence coincided with the opening of their iMuseum here on the Island. It was the first time the Departments and the Society had been represented at the event and, with laptops firing on all cylinders, it was a joy to be there when another piece in the ‘family jigsaw’ was discovered after years of searching.
Dot and friend at our ‘WDYTYA' stand Chris Kneale on standby Our own Maxine Cannon met up with TV history broadcaster Tony Robinson at the show. No stranger to the Island, Tony admired the Genealogy products and remembered enthusiastically our Viking stamps by his friend and colleague Victor Ambrus.
Sue at Stampex Our Isle of Man Genealogy stamps, issued in February, gave us our first venture into the wonderful world of family history. The popularity of researching our origins has been promoted by numerous TV shows tracing the ancestors of celebrities who have discovered some amazing connections. We shared our busy stand at the ‘Who Do You Think You Are’
Time Team’s Tony admires Maxine’s merchandise Finally, we have a bit of a reputation for our excellence in producing special collectable stamp folders. If I may draw your attention to our Lifetime of Service Commemorative Folder on Page 9 - it really is one of the best folders we have ever done in my opinion. Sixty years is an historic milestone in any terms and the unstinting devotion to duty that Her Majesty the Queen and HRH Prince Philip have made over this period is immeasurable.

THE
Isle of Man Butterfly COLLECTION
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this Butterfly Collection of eight stamps featuring species selected not only for their beauty but also to highlight some uniquely Manx aspects of their lives. In the Isle of Man 19 species of butterfly may be seen during the year– at different times and places. This is only a third of the number in Britain (59) though some of them are surviving better here than across the Irish Sea.
There is another special aspect of butterfly species on the Island. Most of them have been here for thousands of years – after the last ice-age – and can’t or don’t venture across the sea. Some of the species on these stamps can and do fly to Man. The Painted Lady is a regular summer migrant Butterflies have an intimate relationship with plants. The arriving each year (though in variable numbers) from as far illustrations show them using some of their favoured flower away as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It does not sources for food. The Red Admiral is illustrated on Buddleia however survive our winter. The Red Admiral is also a which is a well used nectar source in gardens, parks and the regular migrant (from southern Europe) but until recently it roadsides in high summer. It is also popular with the too did not over-winter. Now due to a warmer climate it can Comma and Small Tortoiseshell, and the Painted Lady. A hibernate to re-emerge on warm sunny days in spring. Buddleia in full flower in a sunny position in August can have dozens of these related species. And most importantly for the Isle of Man: when many other of the British Islands are losing species, we have gained two Ragwort is also a popular nectar source for butterflies; new species in the past decade. The Comma and the appropriately as it is the Manx national flower (Cushag) Speckled Wood were not ‘Manx’ species. Then they were and widely distributed. recorded on the east coast at first in small numbers It is frequented by the Small Copper and by the Common (presumed to have crossed the sea from Cumbria) and now Blue though this latter species will use a variety of plants to may be seen anywhere. They can be added to the Manx list feed on. The Green-veined White is a widespread Manx of butterfly species. species and can be seen anywhere from the coast to the Gail Jeffcoate, Butterfly Recorder, Isle of Man hill-tops though it does favour sheltered damp places; here Stephen Jeffcoate, Chairman, Manx Wildlife Trust it is nectaring on Lavender. The Dark Green Fritillary is the Island’s only fritillary (there are eight species in Britain) but is doing well here. It heads for thistles as a source of food.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – April 2011
The Isle of Man Post Office congratulates Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton on their royal wedding on April 29, 2011, marked by a public holiday. To celebrate this special occasion, we are issuing a miniature sheet of two stamps, featuring Prince William and his bride to be. It will be an exciting day for Britain, which is currently in the middle of a recession. Billions of people around the world are expected to watch the ceremony on television and thousands will line the streets of London. Prince William follows in the footsteps of his grandparents by getting married to Catherine at Westminster Abbey. It was there that the Queen married the Duke of Edinburgh and it was the venue for Princess Diana’s funeral. Kate will travel to the Abbey by a limousine from the Queen’s fleet of cars. Prince William will follow with the rest of the royal family. It is one of the few times that a future princess has not arrived in a fairytale horse-driven coach. The last royal to travel by car was Sophie Rhys-Jones when she married Prince Edward at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 1999. The service will take place at the church at 11am on April 29 and will be conducted by The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall. But, in line with tradition, The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, will perform the marriage ceremony and The Bishop of London Richard Chartres, who counselled the prince in the wake of his mother’s death and presided over his confirmation, will give a ‘very personal’ sermon. Up to 2,200 guests, including heads of state, members of European royal families and celebrities, are expected to attend.
One hundred golden tickets have been reserved for the public, being drawn at random. After the ceremony, the couple will emerge to a spectacle of marching soldiers, military bands and mounted regiments. They will return to Buckingham Palace in a horse-drawn State Landau coach along the traditional route for the State Opening of Parliament taking in London landmarks such as The Mall, the Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square. However, in a break with tradition, the Queen will host a buffet reception at Buckingham Palace rather than a tencourse wedding breakfast. It will be a marked difference to her own wedding reception in 1947 when she had a banquet of sole followed by braised partridge and Bombe Glacée. After official photographs the newlyweds are expected to appear on the balcony for an embrace. Their appearance will coincide with a flypast from William’s RAF colleagues. After retiring for a rest, the couple will attend a private dinner and dancing at Buckingham Palace, hosted by the Prince of Wales. He is inviting 350 guests to the party, including William and Catherine’s school friends from Eton and Marlborough, contemporaries from St Andrew’s University, and military colleagues. Kate will be the first commoner to marry an expected future king for 350 years, since Anne Hyde married the future King James II, in 1660.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 1st April 2011 TT2011 CENTENARY OF THE MOUNTAIN COURSE The Greatest TT Races of all time...
We are delighted to present ten epic races selected by a special group of legendary TT heroes, historians and journalists…
Racers John McGuinness, Ian Hutchinson, Michael Dunlop, Dave Molyneux, Charlie Williams, Steve Parrish; historian Bill Snelling and journalists John Watterson and Gary Pinchin spent hours deliberating to arrive at, what they believe, are some of the most exciting races in TT history. After a public vote the all-time favourite features on our Miniature Sheet. 1935 Senior TT – Woods v Guthrie Stanley Woods beat Jimmy Guthrie by four seconds after a masterful tactical stroke during the closing stages of the 1935 Senior. Nortonmounted Guthrie led the race by 26s going into the last lap but his team, seeing Woods’ Moto Guzzi crew preparing a pit-stop, signalled Guthrie to ease his pace - only for Woods to flash past the pits without stopping.Woods set a new lap record to win the race by three seconds. 1967 Senior TT – Hailwood v Agostini Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood fought out arguably one of the greatest races in TT history in the ’67 Senior. Ago - riding an MV Agusta - broke Hailwood’s lap record on the first lap but the Honda rider fought back, with another new record of 108.77mph but was still down by 8.6s. But after the pit stops, there was virtually nothing between them and the closest TT finish ever looked on the cards until Ago’s chain snapped on the penultimate lap. 1976 Senior TT – Herron v Williams John Williams smashed Mick Grant’s lap record by 27s and took the speed up by 2.65mph to 112.27mph in a stunning charge on the works Texaco Heron Suzuki RG500 in the ’76 Senior. Going into the final lap he had a three-minute lead over Yamaha-mounted Tom Herron but Williams’ Suzuki had to push his out of fuel Suzuki in from Governors and wound up seventh while Herron won the race. Not a close finish but a typically dramatic TT race. 1977 Sidecar TT Race A – O’Dell/Arthur v Greasley/Skeels With the demise of World Championship races at the TT, the Sidecars were given two races and capacity limits upped to 1000cc. On the first lap of the opening race Dick Greasley and Mick Skeels broke the 100mph lap from a standing start on their Yamaha but George O’Dell and Kenny Arthur - also on a Yamaha-powered outfit, upped the ante and with a record-breaking 102.80mph final lap, to beat Greasley by 50 seconds. 1979 Classic TT – George v Hailwood The Isle of Man celebrated its millennium in style with an epic, six-lap Classic race in 1979. Alex George led the first four laps, riding a 1000cc Honda Britain four-cylinder, four-stroke. Mike Hailwood, riding a four-cylinder, two-stroke Suzuki RG500 fought back and going into the final lap led by 0.8s but George was stronger over the Mountain and won the race by a mere 3.4s – at a new record average of 113mph

1992 Senior TT – Hislop v Fogarty Carl Fogarty and Steve Hislop were riding unfamiliar bikes at the TT; Foggy on a Loctite Yamaha OW01, Hizzy on an Abus-backed Norton rotary. But it didn’t stop them delivering one of the greatest-ever Senior showdowns. Hislop broke his own lap record. Fogarty raised it to 123.61mph but Hislop took the race by 4.4s and set a new race record of 121.38mph in Norton’s first TT win since 1973, their first Senior victory since 1961. 2000 Formula 1 TT – Dunlop v Jeffries Joey Dunlop was riding Aaron Slight’s WSB Honda SP1 1000cc v-twin. David Jefferies was on the V&M Yamaha R1. Joey revelled in the tricky mixture of wet and dry conditions around the 37.73mile course and while Jefferies briefly led on the fourth lap, Joey was back in front thanks to a slick pit stop by the Honda team. Jefferies was eventually sidelined with engine failure. Joey won the race by almost a minute. 2008 Senior – McGuinness v Donald The 2008 Senior was the kind of close-fought scrap that defines the modern era of TT racing. Early on there were five riders in contention. On the last lap it came down to two: Cameron Donald, on a Relentless Suzuki, had five-second lead but John McGuinness was charging on the Padgetts Honda. Donald’s bike sprung an oil leak while McGuinness’ last lap of 129.517mph ensured him the victory to equal Mike Hailwood’s TT win tally. 2010 Sidecar TT Race 2 – Klaffenbock/Sayle v Holden/Winkle Former World Sidecar champion Austrian Klaus Klaffenbock and passenger Dan Sayle made it a Sidecar TT double by winning a dramatic second race during the 2010 TT. Thanks to a spirited run over the Mountain on the final lap, Klaffi recorded the fastest race lap at 114.15mph to defeat John Holden and Andy Winkle - clinching victory by just 1.12s after being some 10s down. Klaffi was the first non-Manx winner of a TT sidecar race since 2003. 2010 Superstock TT – Hutchinson v Farquhar Ryan Farquhar went into the fourth and final lap of the 2010 Superstock TT with a 5.54s lead but Ian Hutchinson was on a mission and, by the time they had reached the Bungalow, was up by 1.29s. Hutchinson crossed the line to win the race by 1.3s thanks to a stunning new lap record of 130.741mph - the first-ever Superstock 130mph lap.The Padgett’s Honda rider won a record-breaking five solo TT races in the week.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 1st April 2011 TT2011 GREATEST RACE MINIATURE SHEET
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this miniature sheet to celebrate the TT race voted the greatest ever by bike fans in the 100th anniversary year of the TT Mountain Course.
With so many memorable and truly awesome races in TT history, every bike fan has their own favourite ‘most exciting TT race ever’ and many a great debate on this important matter has ensued over a pint of ‘Bushey’s Brew’. So, in anniversary year, the Isle of Man Post Office decided enough was enough - just which race do the fans think is ‘the Greatest TT Race ever?’ From a short list of ten races chosen by an eminent panel of TT experts we invited the fans to choose a winner. Over 2000 entries were received and of those entries the race voted number one - by a huge majority - was the 1992 Senior Race when the late Steve Hislop beat Carl Fogarty by just 4 seconds! A truly memorable race and a worthy winner. We asked second-placed man on the day, Carl Fogarty, to recount the race… “The strange thing about the build up to the Senior race of the 1992 TT was that the two fastest guys there, me and Steve Hislop, had not won a race during the week. There were some other fast riders there, such as Joey and Robert Dunlop and Phil McCallen, but I knew that Steve was the man to beat. He was actually the fastest rider I have ever seen around the TT circuit and if everything clicked for him on the day, I was going to have my work cut out. As ever we were staying at The Empress Hotel and it’s always an important moment for a rider to pull the curtains back and see what the weather has in store. It was a really nice day, so it was
going to be a fast and dry race. I was in the lead from the start and I knew that it must have been Steve in second place. I was still in the lead at the end of the second lap by just two seconds. The Norton was a lot faster in a straight line. In fact my Yamaha was only in the top 10 in one of the three speed traps. I think that is part of the reason it was such a classic race – the fastest bike versus the best handling bike, even though I was already starting to experience major problems. The bike was making such a noise that I had a massive headache. “The faster I go, the sooner I can get off this bike,” I thought. Steve had reversed the lead on the third lap and pulled into the lead by a few seconds on the fourth lap, despite the fact that I was pulling back time in the pits because the Norton took on more fuel. But somehow I managed to pull five seconds back on the final lap going over the Mountain section, where I was a bit stronger than Steve, even if my bike wasn’t that strong at that point. I had started number 4, with Steve number 19, so when I crossed the line I could hear the commentator counting down before Steve crossed the line to win by four seconds. I can honestly say that nobody could have ridden the Yamaha, in the state it was in, any faster on that day. I waited to tell him that I had got the lap record until we were on the rostrum. He was gutted because he always wanted to be the fastest man at the TT.That record stood for an amazing seven years, one of the proudest achievements of my career.”

cartoons by
‘Dusty’ Miller
Between 1933 and 1962 newspaper cartoons by Harold ‘Dusty’ Miller (1898-1964) captured political and social issues in a way that text alone could not. Some cartoons would remain topical for generations. Occasionally he bordered on morale-raising or conscience-pricking propaganda but mostly visualised public sentiment. Miller won a scholarship to Liverpool School of Art when 13. Financially unable to take advantage of it, he became a telegram message boy, at 14, for Liverpool Post Office. Later, in a World War 1 trench, he designed a 1917 Christmas card which the Postmen’s Federation adopted for sending to postal workers in the armed forces. In 1919 Miller joined Liverpool City Police and designed a police Roll of Honour. Health considerations, however, led to him moving with his Manx wife to the Isle of Man in 1926 and becoming advertising manager and artist for the Isle of Man Times and Examiner newspapers. Cartoons had to be produced to meet the newspapers’ weekly deadlines and were often drawn at home. In 1953 Dusty’s artistry in oils and water colours led to his being founder chairman of the Isle of Man Art Society. His dream of an annual Easter art exhibition was realised in 1963, one year before his death, aged 66. Ten years later, the founder of Isle of Man Post Office and former work colleague, Victor Kneale, would suggest that, had Dusty been alive, he could have designed commercial postage stamps. In fact, he had produced two designs in about 1938 and 1953 when there were public campaigns for them. Isle of Man Post office is pleased to present a set of 6 stamps in honour of a former Liverpool telegram Boy who became the Island’s most influential cartoonist.
37p - the southern hundred "Thrills galore when motor-cycle racing came to the South" for the first time in July 1955. The idea had come about when alternatives to the TT were discussed in 1953.
38p - I’m staking my claim on the sands at douglas Dusty's design for a postcard in the early 1950s, when Douglas beach was a major holiday feature, was never actually published. 68p - national expenses fence This image from 1955 reflects the relentless rise in the calls on the public purse.
76p - will uncle sam provide the ‘third leg’? By September 1940 the Manx people had raised enough money by voluntary donations to pay for two Spitfires and it was hoped that a third one might be funded by (Manx) Americans. 11op - Bob a job week Like Bob-a-Job week the large baby in the scout’s arms reflects the falling value of ‘the Bob’ against increased Government costs in 1954.
165p - well councillor - did you vote for evening meetings? The Douglas Town Council had voted to hold some of their meetings in the evening, perhaps to the dismay of some of their wives!

COINS
Isle of Man Treasury Coins Cooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin Miscellaneous Tokens & Checks M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGI The farthing, halfpenny and penny regal coins of Victoria, dated 1839, were the last to be minted for the Isle of Man until the introduction of the decimal coins in 1971. British coins were then the only currency in general circulation - and the few odd Irish coins that found their way to the Island!
British Isles converted to the decimal system of currency. Provision was made in the Manx Decimal Coin Act of 1970 for a distinctive Island series of circulating coins. Six coins in the denominations of halfpenny, penny, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p were prepared and released on the 20th October 1971. All decimal coins issued for circulation in the Isle of Man bear the head of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
There was, however, a special issue of non-circulating gold coins issued in 1965 for the bicentenary of the Act of Revestment (when the Island was sold to the British Crown in 1765 for £70,000) The 1971 Isle of Man decimal set of coins. There were 495,000 halfpennies minted and 100,000 of each of the other denominations. The 1965 Act of Revestment gold coins, £5, £1 and £1/2
A new set of coins, with different designs, was issued in 1976.
Towards the end of 1970 the Isle of Man Government decided to issue a crown (face value five shillings) believing it would be the last one struck in the sterling area before decimalization. It was made generally available for collectors through the Manx banks and a number did find their way into circulation. These Crown coins were struck by the Royal Mint in London and featured the tail-less Manx cat.
All coins (1/2p, 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p) dated 1972, 1973 and 1974 are scarce. Pobjoy Mint produced only 1000 of each coin in those years and they were despatched as samples to the Isle of Man Government in the hope of obtaining a regular order for coins. Due to the fact that there were enough coins (all dated 1971) in circulation at that time, including all the British coins, no more were issued until 1975. Those coins dated 1972, 1973 and 1974 were put into circulation along with large quantities of newly minted coins dated 1975. When it was realised that these coins had been released, many collectors, including the general public, hunted for the elusive dates. Only the pennies and 2p coins are still legal tender and it is, therefore, unlikely that any of these coins now remain in circulation.

Further details of the Island’s decimal coins will be featured in future issues of Stamp and Coin News.
