Maxine’s Message
Chaghteraght Maxine
t is with great pleasure that I am writing my first piece for our newsletter. As you may have read in our spring newsletter, I succeeded Dot our General Manager, and dear friend, following her retirement from the Isle of Man Post Office after 38 years service. It was noted by Mike Kelly, our Chief Executive that Dot hadn’t had so much as one day off work sick since 1999 - loyalty and reliability were her cornerstones.
I
Maxine Cannon, General Manager, IOM Stamps & Coins
Chris Oates, our Production Manager also retired after 38 years. Chris was our ‘figures’ man, a steady rudder who made sure the integrity of our collections was always maintained. We all wish Dot and Chris a very happy retirement. When my appointment was announced the local news headline read “New face at Isle of Man Stamps and Coins” - with a sub title “Maxine has worked in the department for 32 years.”
Above: Dot with our CEO, Mike Kelly, and Chairman Geoff Corkish MBE MLC
My husband asked me how long you have to be in the department to be an old face! Since starting in the Bureau on the 1st June 1981 I have been extremely fortunate in having so many of our loyal collectors, trade customers, suppliers and colleagues willingly share their thoughts and give me guidance on all aspects of collecting Isle of Man Stamps and Coins. I sincerely hope this will continue as we move past our 40th anniversary of postal independence. Many people comment that we must be running out of ideas for new stamp issues, but this isn’t the case. Manx history, culture and heritage has centuries of material to draw upon and our researchers continue to unearth fascinating topics for your enjoyment. With best wishes, Maxine

Celebrating Forty Years of the Isle of Man Post Office... The Europa theme this year is Postal Vehicles and, in a happy coincidence, we celebrate our fortieth anniversary as a postal authority independent of the GB Royal Mail. The 73p stamp matches with the year 1973 and our sheet features our own Isle of Man Post Office vehicle out in the beautiful Manx countryside. There is also a special first day cover featuring the 73p Europa value and associated postmark. A Warm Manx Welcome at the Postal Forum More than 30 delegates representing small Postal administrations from around the world including Aland, Barbados, Estonia, Falklands, Greenland, Seychelles and Swiss Post, attended the inaugural Small Posts and Island’s Postal Forum in May. The three-day forum, held at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas, was designed as not for profit and was sponsored by Escher, a Dublin and Boston based IT business providing solutions to the postal world, Jon Enschede, high quality security and stamp printers based in Holland, Swiss Post Solutions, one of the most innovative Posts in digital solutions and Ukash, a global e-money business who see the Posts as key business partners. The forum, officially opened by the Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK, was by invitation only and aimed at key decision makers and senior officials from postal administrations around the world. With declining mail volumes, technical substitution, economic uncertainty and the changing social tenders of customers, all Posts are facing the same kind of challenges, be it a large Post or small. Smaller Posts do not always have the resources to invest heavily in solutions to these global problems and instead have to rely on creativity and resourcefulness to continue to compete successfully. The purpose of the forum was
to allow small Posts to come together to exchange ideas and best practice, explore current and future trends, network, address common issues and identify new areas and opportunities for collaboration. There was a varied programme with some very interesting speakers. Full day sessions covered all aspects of the postal industry from digital and physical integration, innovation in philately, customer service, engaging with government for retail services as well as reform to modernisation and corporatisation. They were presented by a variety of key speakers and proved invaluable in bringing together a wealth of experience and knowledge for all the attendees to benefit from, as well as a number of enlightening question and answer sessions. Within the event programme, Isle of Man Post Office took advantage of the opportunity to showcase the Isle of Man to the visiting delegates with trips to Laxey and the south of the Island so they could see how it differs from their respective homelands. The group also had free time to explore the Island at their leisure. The feedback from the Forum was excellent and other Posts have already offered to host the event, ensuring this first event provided a blueprint for similar events in the future.

Mr Norman Bason It is with sadness we advise you that Norman Bason, former Controller of the Isle of Man Post Office, recently passed away at the age of 88. In 1973, at the time of postal independence, Norman was in charge of the Philatelic Bureau with Stuart Slack as his assistant. Norman interviewed me for a job as Postal Assistant when I joined in June 1981. I remember him as a very calm and kind person who was very well thought of by all the staff at the time. NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 19.06.13
The Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to celebrate the 100th Tour de France with a set of eight stamps, capturing the truly unique spirit and history of Le Tour. This year, 2013, marks the 100th edition of the Tour de France - the world’s biggest annual sporting event and widely regarded as the toughest endurance test in sport. It began in 1903 and the first British riders took part in 1937, but it wasn’t until 1958 that Brian Robinson became the first Briton to win a stage. The Yorkshireman has played a key role in bringing the Tour to his home county for the Grand Départ in 2014, so there are several reasons why he has been chosen to feature on the 42p stamp. Robinson is pictured in the 1960 Tour. He was one of the British pioneers who inspired subsequent generations, but the Isle of Man has also played its part in generating interest in the Tour. For more than 50 years Isle of Man International Cycling Week attracted a long list of Tour de France riders including Coppi, Anquetil, Merckx, Simpson, Fignon and Roche. Mark Cavendish - the first and so far only Manx rider to compete in the Tour - has 23 stage wins at the time of writing. He won the Green Jersey in 2011 and Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour outright in 2012. Cavendish is pictured on the 40p stamp in the 2011 Tour, while Wiggins appears on the 120p stamp in the 2012 race. The Yellow Jersey first appeared in the Tour 1919 so that spectators and the press could easily identify the
race leader. The 1p stamp shows Frenchman Eugène Christophe, the first rider ever to wear the Maillot Jaune. Only four men have won the Tour five times, so it is fitting that they are each honoured with their own stamp in this issue. Frenchman Jacques Anquetil won in 1957 and then four in a row from 1961 to 1964. Belgium’s Eddy Merckx stunned the cycling world by winning on his Tour debut in 1969 and ‘ The Cannibal’ was unbeatable for the next three years. He didn’t ride the 1973 race but returned to win his fifth title the following year. Bernard Hinault won his first Tour in 1978 starting the race resplendent in the French national champion’s jersey and finishing it in yellow. He won again the following year but injury prevented him making it three in a row. Tours number three and four came in 1981 and 1982 and win number five in 1985. Only one man has won five Tours in successive years - Spain’s Miguel Indurain won from 1991 to 1995. A photo of Anquetil in the 1963 Tour is on the 73p stamp; Merckx racing in the 1970 Tour is on the 108p stamp; Hinault in the 1979 race on the 119p stamp and Indurain in the 1992 Tour on the 69p stamp.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a stamp issue to commemorate some of the most significant events of recent history reported in The Times in the year that this world-famous publication celebrates its own 225th anniversary…
Peter Jennings FRPSL, FRGS writes: The Times newspaper, now owned by News International, was founded in London during 1785. Initially titled The Daily Universal Register, it was first published as The Times from 1st January 1788. Since then it has comprehensively covered major events at home and abroad in words and pictures, during war and peacetime. All the headlines reproduced on this set of six Newspaper Headlines, in association with The Times newspaper, capture the drama and immediacy of particular news events flashed across the world. People of a certain age vividly remember where they were when they heard the news that President Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. They can recollect the excitement and pride as England won the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final, dramatically beating West Germany 42 in extra time, at the old Empire Stadium. People still talk about watching in awe remarkable television pictures of American Apollo XI astronaut, Neil Armstrong, stepping down onto the surface of the Moon, in July 1969. Residents in the Isle of Man recall with particular pleasure going to a post office and buying the first postage stamps issued by their new independent Postal Authority, in July 1973. 40p Value: The Eagles Have Landed – 2003 The unrivalled supersonic airliner Concorde was retired from service after 27 years on 26th November 2003. The first Concorde flight took place on 2nd March 1969 and the aircraft entered commercial service on 21st January 1976. The primary users were British Airways and Air France who profitably flew regular transatlantic flights from London Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport to New York in less than half the time other airliners took. 42p Value: Ramsey Proved Right in World Cup - 1966 The Football Association, formed in London during October 1863, organised the 1966 FIFA World Cup Finals, the eighth of these TECHNICAL DETAILS Design...........................................................................EJC Design Text..................................................Peter Jennings FRPSL, FRGS Printer ......................................................................................BDT Stamp Size ..........................................................40.64 x 29.79mm Colours ..........................................................................................4 Process ..............................................................Offset Lithography
tournaments. The magnificent England team, under Manager Alf Ramsey, later Sir Alf, won a sensational final at the old Empire Stadium, Wembley when they beat West Germany 4-2 in extra time, on Saturday 30th July 1966. HM the Queen presented the Jules Rimet Cup to England Captain, Bobby Moore. 73p Value: New Stamps Being Issued by the Isle of Man Postal Authority - 1973 The Isle of Man became an independent postal administration on 5th July 1973; prior to that the Post Office had been run by the Royal Mail. The Isle of Man Post Office, situated in Douglas, marked postal independence by releasing its first definitive issue - 22 values, ½d to £1 – plus an engaging 15p commemorative stamp, showing a Viking Landing on Man, AD 938. 108p Value: Great Wall Stormed by Queen – 1986 HM The Queen, accompanied by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, made a state visit to the People’s Republic of China from 2nd to 8th October 1986. President Li Xiannian, President of the People’s Republic of China, 1983-1988, was her host. The Queen visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Kunming and Canton, and was also shown the iconic Great Wall of China. 141p Value: President Kennedy Assassinated - 1963 John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States of America, was assassinated, on 22nd November 1963, by sniper Lee Harvey Oswald as his presidential motorcade drove through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. 179p Value: Man Lands on Moon in Perfect Touchdown - 1969 Men first landed on the Moon, on 21st July 1969. Apollo XI American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, set his left foot on the surface of the Moon and uttered the famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was joined by fellow astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. While they collected Moon samples, the third astronaut Michael Collins, told mission control in Houston that he had successfully orbited the Moon in the mother ship Columbia.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 08.08.13
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet to celebrate the outstanding murals by renowned Manx artist John Miller Nicholson (1840-1913) in the centenary year of his death. St Thomas’ Church was designed by Ewan Christian, an architect of Manx decent, who chose the architecture of the 12th Century for its style. Although the intended spire never materialised, his masterpiece - including the box pews - was complete in time for the opening on 1st August 1849. Christian went on to become President of the Royal Institute of British Architects and official architect to the Ecclesiastical Commission. Canon Savage was appointed to St Thomas’ in 1882. He was a keen antiquarian and had a knowledge of church architecture. At Easter 1896 he put forward the idea that the church would be enhanced if the walls were decorated in a form appropriate to its style of architecture. A scheme was prepared by the very talented self-taught local artist John Nicholson, who, with his brother James, ran a housepainting business in Douglas. In October the Bishop approved the scheme which was estimated to cost approximately £450. By November the decoration of the chancel had commenced and took nearly six months to complete. Work then started on the main body of the church, but additional fundraising was necessary. The scheme was greatly hit by the failure of Dumbell’s Bank in February 1900. Fundraising became difficult as so many people were affected by the crash. Following the death in 1909 of Thomas Mylchreest, a church warden, his widow paid for the completion of the decoration in his memory. Canon Savage decided on what was to be portrayed, and asked Nicholson to give “expression” to his thoughts. Each design was drawn on squared paper and then enlarged on

the walls using the same grid pattern. John Nicholson personally supervised the work with his brother undertaking various texts in lettering copied from a 12th century manuscript in the British Museum. Their workmen undertook the colouring-in of the decoration, but discretely added pencil notes high up on the walls to say how fed up they were with the job taking so long! So much of what was portrayed was symbolic, such as the vertical decoration on both gables representing the Tree of Life. In the chancel there are angels, musical and flying. The Archangel Michael is shown fighting a many-headed dragon, representing the devil, whilst Archangel Gabriel brings news to Mary that she is to be the mother of God. Either side of the arches in the nave religious symbols abound with the Ark of the Covenant, Golden Candle Stick and the Table of Shewbread. The four evangelists appear as a man, lion, ox and eagle. Next come the lamb, pelican, phoenix and dove - being well known representations of the very foundation of truths of the Christian faith. The final representations show a vine representing Christ with us mortals as the branches: the lily representing purity; the olive as fruitfulness, and the palm tree representing victory, given palm leaves were waved in triumphal procession. Canon Savage had hoped that the walls above and below the side galleries would be similarly decorated, but the special service of thanksgiving for the completion of the murals on 10th April 1910 brought the scheme to an end and gave St Thomas’ a unique heritage amongst churches in the Isle of Man.

COINS AND COLLECTABLES
Isle of Man Treasury Coins Cooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin Two Pound Coins Issued between 1986 and 1997 M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGI The Manx £2 coin received Tynwald (the Manx Parliament) approval on 17th February 1986 and went into immediate production at the Pobjoy Mint. This new coin was first advertised as a ‘Double Pound’ and featured the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay. It is believed that pattern £2 coins were produced in 1984 and 1985 to gain official approval but none were struck for circulation. The circulating Manx £2 coins of this design were dated 1986 and 1987. They were struck in a single metal, Virenium, and have an interrupted grained edge. Bi-metal coins were first issued in 1997. All the issued £2 coins minted between 1986 and 1997 bear the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf. The Tower of Refuge coins have the legend “ELIZABETH THE SECOND” whilst all the others have “ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II” with the Triskeles (Three Legs of Mann) appearing either side of the coronet. The Triskeles also appear on either side of the date on all issues. These £2 coins bear the Pobjoy die mark of a Celtic ‘AA’ on the reverse, except for those dated 1986 where there is no die mark.
Two coins were issued In 1993 and 1994 to commemorate the achievement of Nigel Mansell, World racing champion who lived in the Isle of Man at this time. On the 1993 coin Mansell is shown in his No.5 racing car taking part in the 1992 F.I.A. Formula 1 race. In the following year he became PPG Indy-Car World Champion, suitably illustrated on the 1994 £2 coin. VE and VJ Days were commemorated in 1995 with a splendid coin showing the embellished badge of the Royal British Legion. The Isle of Man has a great sporting tradition and this was reflected in the issue of a set of circulating coins featuring Manx Sporting Themes in 1996. The £2 coin showed historic car racing with an E-Type Jaguar, 1906 Rolls Royce and a 1904 Napier. These coins were dated 1996 and 1997. The same design was also used in 1997 for the introduction of the bi-metal coins. Manx circulating £5 coins from the same period will feature in the next issue of Stamps and Coins News.
Coins of the Isle of Man, by M. J. Southall, M.B.E
Coins issued in 1988, 1990 to 1993 depicted a Manx Airlines BAe 146100 Jet Aircraft flying over the Isle of Man. Coins showing a Manx Airlines Advanced Turbo Prop (ATP) over the Isle of Man were prepared in 1987 but not released for general circulation. The Treasury did, however, issue a few examples before speedily withdrawing them. A £2 coin depicting a Manx airship dirigible was prepared before the project was scrapped in 1989. A few examples were released by the Treasury and Mint before they were officially withdrawn.

FUTURE ISSUES A Christmas Stamp Gallery - Issue Date 17.10.13 When looking for a way to celebrate our fortieth anniversary we decided to look into our archives to see what had been consistent over a number of years. We homed in on our Christmas stamp designs and decided to showcase a selection since our very first Christmas stamp back in 1976. When we viewed the collection in its entirety it was fascinating to see so many traditional Christmas activities portrayed and the very different approaches: original artwork, paper sculptures, stained glass windows, a child’s interpretation of Christmas via a design a stamp competition - each issue plays its part in celebrating our fortieth anniversary of Isle of Man Stamps.
A Journey Through Africa Miniature Sheet - Issue Date 13.09.13 The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet showcasing the African pictures of renowned Islandbased wildlife artist Jeremy Paul. In our issue text Jeremy guides us through his own personal voyage of discovery of some of the most outstanding locations for viewing the continent’s signature animals so familiar to us all.
Big Cats - Issue Date 13.09.13 A set of six stamps which feature original artwork by Island-based artist Jeremy Paul. Big Cats is a term used to cover some of the most charismatic species of cat - these are the top predators that everyone knows - but may confuse. They are powerful, we view them with awe and respect, we may fear them, but above all we are seduced by their beauty. All are in danger - mostly due to habitat loss, poaching and persecution. Most now inhabit a tiny fraction of their original range and many are confined to national parks and reserves. The issue also encompasses the 2013 SEPAC theme of wildlife.
