Welcome to our Winter 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends It is with pleasure I welcome you to our first newsletter of 2018. Please accept our very best wishes for the new year; I would like to assure you that we are all here to look after your needs. When I look back on 2017 I am reminded of all the occasions we supported letter writing amongst 2 year olds to 102 year olds. Yes that’s correct - I went to a stamp talk and as I often say ‘there is no such thing as a free lunch’ I decided to provide each attendee with a Twelve Days of Christmas card and complimentary stamp and asked them to write to anyone in the whole wide world with a Christmas greeting. We have received a lot of very good feedback from our efforts to encourage letter writing. It was also a joy to visit a local pre-school class along with postman Steve Cooke who hand delivered Christmas cards from Father Christmas. We sent in excess of 3000 letters to Father Christmas and it is always a lovely project to be involved with, especially when you see the joy on the childrens’ faces when they receive their reply. If you are involved in any school groups or clubs I will very happily send a postcard from the Isle of Man with a nice postmark if the names and addresses are sent on a file or pre-printed label. I hope you find the new collections interesting and very different to one another. We have taken on board your comments regarding too many stamp themes and therefore as from 1st April 2018 there will be two fewer issues in our programme going forward. Further, we plan to announce production figures in the next newsletter. With all good wishes from the Stamps and Coin team and sincere thanks for your continued support

Manx Tholtans by Ray Kelly Exhibition Our Manx Tholtans by Ray Kelly stamp collection marked a special collaboration between Ray Kelly and Isle of Man Post Office as it coincided with a fascinating exhibition of the same name, which took place at the Manx Museum in Douglas. Ray said, “I have encountered tholtans in various states of disrepair; some are a mere pile of stones. Each year they deteriorate further as they are exposed to the elements, so it has been important for me to encapsulate their essence before they disappear totally.” Ray was pleased to show some Isle of Man Stamps and Coins representatives around the exhibition in December and share his knowledge of the unique images.
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present our first collaboration with Israel Post, a Limited Edition double cancel commemorative envelope titled “Peace on Earth” The cover, in a limited edition of just 200 copies features a “Season’s Greetings from the Holy Land” Frama label postmarked ‘Nazareth Israel 24th December 2014’. The three stamps featured are the 2015 Christmas Prayer Book, originally issued in 1991 - Christmas Paper Sculptures and 2005 Stained Glass Windows. It is with great pleasure that Isle of Man Post Office presents a set of six stamps showcasing a selection of picturesque stone ruins that grace the Island’s landscape. Typically speaking, a tholtan can be defined as an abandoned home, farmstead, mill or other industrial building, its gradual decay a signifier of a changing rural society. Photographer and author Ray Kelly writes…
iomstamps.com on the Douglas-Ramsey mountain road. Before it was sold
It is from the old hill farms, homesteads and mills that the Island people originated and some of the traditional farming ways are still vivid in my memory. As I walked the hills and the valleys I wanted to capture the old ways in my photography as a means of an almanac, to preserve their images for the future. I have encountered tholtans in various states of disrepair; some are a mere pile of stones. Each year they deteriorate further as they are exposed to the elements so it has been important for me to encapsulate their essence before they disappear totally. The best preserved tholtans are the ones that still have their roofs intact; or at least some part of the structure remaining. Even the most dilapidated homesteads seem to reveal something about the families who once lived there. It could be the style of the wall construction, lintel indentations that were used as shelving, the rusty old iron stove or washbowl that remains. I started my photographic recording of tholtans some thirty years ago and it is with some dismay and sadness that, when I came to compare my images, the rate of deterioration is tangible. I felt that I had been called to record them so I commenced my fascinating journey. I feel that this project will always be a work in progress as I don’t think I can ever say categorically that I have recorded every tholtan but I am happy that the most important ones are now stored forever, frozen in time on the day I took the pictures. 20p Value - Ballagale is a little ruin sited above Fleshwick beach. It is situated very close to the old Port Erin reservoir, which no longer supplies the water to the town. According to the 1894 census Mrs Esther Bell was the last person to live there, around 1885, when the reservoir was constructed. The farm was quite substantial with its two-storey build, and the outside toilet appears to adjoin the house. There are fuchsias in the hedge, and two large slabs of slate standing in the large garden from where there is a glorious view over the Calf of Man and the south. It is a short walk to Fleshwick beach, certainly a great place to live in the summer. 4
1st Class Value - Pairk Mooar covers about 60 acres in total and sits near the snow line of North Barrule mountain
to the Ramsey Water Company in 1934 one of the last to own the farm was Mr Gelling of Ramsey, who also had a lovely little summerhouse, pebble-dashed and modern, which has been demolished. He lived there for many years and left in the late 1930s. In the 1940s a Mr Jackson rented the property along with Park Llewellyn and some of North Barrule. EU Value - Cronk Dhoo is situated below the Barregarrow to Brandywell road and, although not a true tholtan, as its roof is still in situ, it won’t be long until nature takes over. It was last farmed in its own right by Mr Michael Webster, a well-known shepherd, who had extensive acreage throughout the Island. It was recently used as a retreat by King William’s College, but these days the only inhabitants are sheep who have taken a liking to sleeping upstairs!
RoW Value - North Laxey Mines sit high in the hills above Cornaa. Supervised by Captain Corlett, who was also a respected sheep farmer, the mine produced lead from 1856 until about 1897. A large viaduct carried water across the valley, the pillars of which can still be seen. There were apparently four wheels installed, the biggest being Elizabeth. There is a substantial group of ruins; the one depicted possibly being the Manager’s office. £1.74 Value - Carnagrie means ‘cairn of the wind’ and has various spelling options, of which this is the commonest. This little ruin sits on Slieau Whallian hill overlooking Lower Foxdale, and was probably used for mine workers homes. The workers would keep a few animals to feed the family and walk to the pits daily. There are several such ruins along this ridge, and a bleak spot it would be in the hard winters of the past. It was farmed for many years by the Christian family. £2.08 Value - Kirk Michael Mines are not very easy to find or reach, they are situated in the valley between Slieau Curn and Slieau Freoaghane. Listed as lead and copper mines, they are known to have cost several prominent locals a considerable amount of money. They were in operation from 1868 until about 1879 and even though a large water wheel, built in Kirk Michael for crushing, was installed very little now remains.

100 YEARS OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of eight stamps that celebrates one hundred years of history and service of the Royal Air Force, presented through images of iconic aircraft that we all know and love. The eight stamps include aircraft from the entire history of the Royal Air Force, but limited as we are by the number of stamps, we have had to choose just a few aircraft, symbolic of their times, from the very large number that have served.
6
Our stamps feature more than just the chosen aircraft; on each stamp you will also find: the name of the aircraft, a medal ribbon and medal initials, the RAF Ensign, the name of an important person associated with the Royal Air Force, the name of an RAF base and the GPS coordinates of the airfield. These additional features are included to add texture and depth to the stamps and to reflect the wealth of information that 100 years of history of the world’s greatest air force has to offer; we hope they will be of interest to serving and former personnel alike. Some of the additional details in our stamps are so tiny that you will need to magnify the stamps to see them, but one further tribute awaits; printed in security ink, visible only under UV light, the sonnet High Flight by John Gillespie Magee appears on the stamp, not in lettering, but in Morse code. Magee was an Anglo-American officer pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force; he died at the young age of nineteen while training. His famous sonnet was written shortly before his death and is a worldwide favourite of aviators and astronauts. To see the poem, shine a UV light on the stamps and if your Morse is a little rusty, perhaps use an online translator to read it. The RAF is an organisation staffed by exceptional people from all backgrounds, serving in a wide range of roles; don’t think just about pilots, think about weapons systems operators, nurses, intelligence analysts, vehicle technicians, electricians, drivers, musicians, movers, engineers, chefs and cyberspace communications specialists, and many, many more. Every role is essential to the smooth operation of the Royal Air Force, and we pay tribute to the people of the RAF in our special stamp sheets. We are very grateful for the assistance of the RAF 100 Programme Team at the Ministry of Defence for their help with this issue, as well as the RAF Historical Branch, The Royal Aeronautical Society, the Manx Aviation and Military Museum, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and many others.
ON THE OCCASION OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE RAF On the 1st of April 2018, the RAF celebrates the 100th anniversary of its foundation in 1918, through the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS); it is the oldest independent air force in the world. Pilots had been flying in combat before this date and we started our research with an English RFC pilot, Geoffrey Glazier, whose grandson created this stamp issue. Born in 1899, he was a student at Aldenham School in Hertfordshire, England; he left school one day with a group of friends and signed up with the Royal Flying Corps. After a short period of training, he travelled to France, arriving on the 26th March 1918. On the 15th April 1918 he was shot down whilst flying a Sopwith Camel low over German trenches and invalided back to England. His short war lasted only three weeks, however one week into it, on the 1st April 1918, the RAF was formed; as an RFC pilot on active service, he became one of the first RAF Officer Pilots. Geoffrey was one of the lucky ones, he lived through the war, along with many fellow English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish officers and many from the Isle of Man such as Sylvester Quine, Theo Watterson, Fred Corlett, George Kewley and Turner Chrystal. The RAF is made up of people who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation. Many of Geoff’s friends in the First World War and many more pilots, navigators, drivers, engineers and other RAF personnel, both military and civilian, have paid the ultimate price in the 100 years of the RAF. Many more continue to serve, in roles so varied that it would be impossible to list them all; this issue is dedicated to them all, with gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

We are proud to present this set of six stamps showcasing landmark designs in the twenty-year career in the fashion industry of two of the Isle of Man’s most talented and successful individuals, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi. Justin and Thea were awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Isle of Man Newspapers Awards for Excellence. JUSTIN AND THEA WRITE… The Isle of Man is a unique place, it has inspired us throughout our careers; it is in our hearts and souls. We draw on the colours and the raw beauty of the Island, the diversity of the landscape and memories from our childhoods have been a great inspiration. From the fishing boats and the lobster pots, to the colours of the promenade, the sea and the changing seasons. The Island’s pagan history and the Celtic symbols have been a great source for us to draw on and we often incorporate them in prints and designs. When you don’t live on the Island your thoughts and memories become so precious and really expand and inspire your creative design process. Every visit to the Island brings new ideas and reminds us of so many memories, it’s a special place and we love to bring our children to experience the joy and history of the Manx heritage. THE STORY OF PREEN Preen by Thornton Bregazzi was founded in 1996 by Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, built on an aesthetic of juxtaposing the masculine with feminine and mixing of hard and soft. Their debut collection at London Fashion Week for Spring Summer 2001 established the brand’s essence of punkish sensibilities with vintage elements and hand crafted details. The collection debuted to rave reviews with critics responding to the subverting of traditional motifs and British sense of tonguein-cheek chic. The label has since become synonymous with deconstructed London cool and developed a cult status amongst fashion heavyweights.
Over two decades, Preen has evolved from a small boutique in London’s Notting Hill to a globally-loved brand stocked across 5 continents and an industry insider favourite. Regularly featured in leading fashion publications and broadsheets, Preen has also collected a loyal fan-base of famous faces, with stars from Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Bosworth, Beyonce, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Emma Stone to the Duchess of Cambridge and former First Lady Michelle Obama repeatedly stepping out in their designs. In 2008 ‘Preen Line’ was launched - the effortless rock ‘n’ roll contemporary line focusing on the easy wear elements of the Preen Woman’s every day wardrobe. A fashion week must see for 30 seasons, showing on the runways of both London and New York and winner of the ‘Established Designer’ award at the British Fashion Awards 2015. With six ready to wear collections a year, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi has expanded to include Preen Home - an opulent offering of soft furnishings, Preen Mini, the luxe children’s wear line as well as a seasonal offering of accessories and footwear. THE COLLECTION Our stamps chart twenty years of ‘Preen by Thornton-Bregazzi’ through their most iconic dress designs. JUSTIN WRITES… We decided to shoot the model in a box as if inside the stamps and shot with a soft focus so that there was almost a painterly feel to the final images. Naturally, we chose a red-headed model inspired by Thea’s trademark hair…
THE YEAR OF OUR ISLAND 2018 This exciting IOM Government-wide project has been instigated to highlight and celebrate Manx success stories, of which we have many. Emphasising arts and design particularly, we can applaud Manx men and women who have achieved national and international acclaim, such as Thea and Justin. By so doing we hope to generate national pride through recognition that growing up on an island within a small community often affords opportunity that cannot be found in larger towns and cities. In contrast to sometimes being considered as isolated or small, the Isle of Man provides an environment that continues to nurture talent and frequently produces sons and daughters who achieve success globally, which they often attribute to continuing inspiration from their home and roots on the Isle of Man. IOM Post Office is pleased to support this initiative with this stamp issue. 8

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this set of two stamps to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dog. As the dog is known as a ‘man’s best friend’ there is much to celebrate in 2018. Chinese symbolism suggests our four-legged friends enjoy good health, happiness a good level of fitness and above all are faithful. Moreover, thought to understand human emotion, the dog always obeys its master whether king or pauper. If in 2018 a dog should appear at one’s door it means the inhabitants can expect good fortune.

When, in 2015, it marked the turn of the sheep, couples rushed to conceive the year previously (Year of the Horse), fearful that their child would mirror the characteristics of this submissive woolly follower who according to superstition, brings only bad luck, failed marriages and misfortune. Each of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac has its virtues and faults. The unquestionable favourite is the dragon, with the tiger, the horse and the dog closely behind. The Chinese believe these animals signify enthusiasm, fortune, strength of character, strong business sense and much wealth – with the dog being deemed the most trustworthy.
What’s more, and in further detail, according to Chinese Five Element Astrology Calendar, 2018 is the Year of the Male Earth Dog and brown the colour of Earth in the Chinese Five Element system. Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present six silent cinema show-stopping stamps inspired by the popular Edwardian tales of one of the Isle of Man’s most illustrious and colourful characters, Hall Caine. Austin Mutti-Mewse writes: Ninety years after The Jazz Singer premiered to audiences in their thousands, we champion a select band of actors who have links back to the Island via the author Sir Thomas Hall Caine (1853- 1931). At a time when cinema celebrates one of the most monumental milestones to have affected the industry – the arrival of sound, better known as the ‘talkies’ - we pay tribute to some of the stars who brought Caine’s characters to life. During the end of the Edwardian era, Sir Thomas Hall Caine (1853 - 1931) became one of the Island’s most famous residents after a string of his popular novels were adapted for the screen, with over half of these initially to be filmed on the Isle of Man (though Hollywood had different ideas). A few of his better-known novels were adapted to become some of the most important films in early cinema history, including The Eternal City (1915 & 1923), The Christian (1923), The Bondman (1929) and perhaps his most famous, The Manxman (1929), which was one of the most eagerly anticipated film openings on the Isle of Man. These features made stars out of their cast of characters… POLA NEGRI (1897 - 1987) The undisputed silent screen vamp made a monumental impact in Barbed Wire (1927). Dubbed ‘the monarch of all melodramas’, Negri swapped her usual glamorous garb for rags as a French, rather than Manx farm girl set in Normandy, France instead of the Isle of Man. CONRAD NAGEL (1897 - 1970) Nagel was dubbed ‘The Prince Consort’ during the 1920s following a series of successful leading roles 12
opposite Gloria Swanson, Bebe Daniels and Pola Negri, however by the arrival of sound his career was beginning to wane. He survived playing a series of supporting male roles and later became a founding member of The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences. BARBARA LA MARR (1896 - 1926) Dark and exotic with extraordinary beauty and high IQ led La Marr to iconic film star status with a legion of fans. It was her wild private life which perhaps raised most interest; married six times, she enjoyed a wild love life which culminated in drug addiction and an early demise by a suspected overdose aged just 29. ANNY ONDRA (1902 - 1987) Alfred Hitchcock cast golden-haired Ondra as the heroine, pregnant by one man but married to another in The Manxman (1929). Besotted with her, Hitchcock cast her next in his first ‘talkie’ Blackmail (1929). Despite her exquisite looks, her heavy accent was a hindrance; therefore her brief moment in British cinema didn’t last. RICHARD DIX (1893 - 1949) Initially a stage star, Samuel Goldwyn plucked Dix for screen stardom as the statuesque male lead in Not Guilty (1921). His well-demeaning nature earned him a solid reputation. However, when ‘talkies’ arrived he found himself cast aside. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 dealt him a second major blow wiping out most of his fortune. NORMAN KERRY (1894 - 1956) His handsome dark look made him an early matinee idol, starring opposite major stars of the day. As the lead in The Bondman, directed by Herbert Wilcox, his was Caine’s favourite film performance. A real-life action hero, he joined the French Foreign Legion at the start of WWII, returning to the U.S. when France capitulated to Nazi Germany.
