#CarryUsThrough

In this issue... The 250th Anniversary of the Birth of William Wordsworth – The 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower – #CarryUsThrough - World Health Organisation Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020

Welcome to our Spring 2020 Newsletter Dear Friends, Hello from the Isle of Man, where we are currently all sustaining a period of ‘lockdown’ as I am sure many of you are too. I hope this finds you safe and well during these testing times. Here at Isle of Man Stamps & Coins, while some of us have been working from home for the past few weeks, I must pay tribute to my colleagues who have continued to go to their normal place of work and carry on their duties in an environment which is very different from the norm. So a big clap to each and everyone of them! Although a challenging situation, we are still able to maintain the high standard expected of our products and services. From issue research and design, to the team who despatch your order, we continue to be here to support you.

loved ones, just to let them know that we are thinking of them during these times of isolation. Within the pages of this newsletter we are excited to share with you a number of fantastic issues. We tell the tale of the great William Wordsworth’s travels to the Isle of Man and also journey alongside Myles Standish aboard the Mayflower during its 400th anniversary year. We also include two important topical issues; the W.H.O. Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020 and #CarryUsThrough. So much hard work has gone into these issues and we are delighted to acknowledge the real-life heroes within our communities through these stamp issues. My sincere thanks for taking the time to read this newsletter and for your continued support of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins. As the Manx adage goes – “Whatsoever way you throw us, we will stand together”, so if you need our help, please just ask. All best wishes and good health,

As we are forced to spend more time at home, we are given the opportunity to look through our stamp collections and remind ourselves of the issues of yesteryear that we may have forgotten. We are also presented with the perfect opportunity to write a letter or send a greetings card to our

APOLLO XIII ANNIVERSARY To mark the anniversary of Apollo XIII, Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to have worked with Jay Honeycutt to produce a brand new commemorative cover. Jay was one of the key Mission Operations Team responsible for training and saving the crew of the stricken Apollo XIII craft. Jay has also written an account exclusively for Isle of Man Post Office, recalling what happened at Mission Control in Houston when Jim Lovell radioed from the spacecraft with those nowfamiliar words - “Houston, we’ve had a problem here. We’ve had a Main B Bus under-volt”. 2

Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

Jay Honeycutt said “The emergency that NASA encountered on Apollo XIII was the most difficult challenge that the flight operations world had ever faced, even more so than the lunar landing. It proved to be a tremendous example of teamwork, showing the world the best of NASA’s ingenuity, professionalism, and “never say die” attitude. The activities that were required to save the crew were memorialized in the phrase ‘Failure is not an option’. Full details about this exciting new product can be found on the back cover.

News Highlights MANX RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO DISPLAY MANX FLAGS Isle of Man Post Office is encouraging Islanders to place a Manx flag in the window of their homes as a sign of unity, and remembering the Isle of Man’s centuries old motto which has stood the Island in great stead ‘Whithersoever you throw it, it will stand.’ For anyone who may not have a Manx flag, two new posters using artwork from the 2008 Interceltique stamp collection have also been made available, with the motto on the poster changed to reflect the Covid-19 situation to ‘Whichever way this throw us, we will stand together.’ Julie Edge MHK, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office said: “As a proud and trusted Manx brand, we would like to see as many people as possible display their Manx flags to collectively show our support to one another in this unsettling time for our Island and the wider world. The Isle of Man is known for its resilience and unlimited community spirit, we are all in this together.” 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS! In April we were delighted to safely deliver Island resident Kathleen Jenkins a big bundle of cards for her 100th birthday. This included her very special celebratory card from Her Majesty The Queen which Kathleen was thrilled to receive (at a safe distance) from her local post lady. We were also happy to mark the 100th birthday of fundraising hero Captain Tom Moore by sending him a specially-designed card. Captain Tom is said to have received thousands of cards to mark his milestone birthday, after proving what an inspiration he is by walking 100 lengths of his garden to raise so much money for the NHS!

DOUGLAS ART SCHOOL EXHIBITION To coincide with the launch of our March issue ‘The Douglas School of Art’, journalist and broadcaster Paul Moulton met up with Ian Coulson, artist and lecturer and Yvonne Cresswell, Curator, Social History, Manx National Heritage

to discuss the stamp collection and the artists behind each of the stamps featured. The interview took place at the Manx Museum where an exhibition, despite being temporarily postponed, will run until January 2020. The full interview can be found at www.iompost.com/douglas-art.

Isle of Man Post Office celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s great Romantic poets, in collaboration with The Wordsworth Trust. Although synonymous with The Lake District, William and Dorothy Wordsworth were strongly associated with the Isle of Man and Manx locations were featured in ‘The Itinerary Poems of 1833’. Manx author Valerie Caine writes... The poetry of William Wordsworth, and the surviving journals of his sister Dorothy, are important literary legacies, but hidden amongst them are details of two visits to the Isle of Man and a number of interesting links to local people. It was Dorothy who first sailed to the Island from Whitehaven in 1828 – her final journey before decline into ill health. Her original manuscript (also containing other material) faded and scattered with corrections, comprises two small notebooks held at the Jerwood Centre of the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere. Although seasick on the inbound sailing, Dorothy was welcomed on land with a dish of tasty crabs and stayed with the siblings of her brother’s wife Joanna and Captain Henry Hutchinson, who lived on South Quay in Douglas, a fashionable area at that time. Both unmarried and driven here by economic circumstances, Joanna, who was godmother to T. E. Brown’s sister, Margaret, was left disabled after an accident on Douglas quayside. Captain Hutchinson (the ‘ex- mariner’ of the sonnets) is buried in Braddan churchyard, with an epitaph said to be written by William Wordsworth. Their nephew, also named Henry, was married and lived in Peel. Dorothy spent the first ten days in and around Douglas with Joanna, Henry and their friends, before heading in a clockwise direction with Henry and her brother’s son, Willy, to explore the hidden delights of the Isle of Man. Upon reaching Ramsey and Maughold, Dorothy returned to Douglas by horse and cart 4

before spending her final week in and around Douglas. She declared that Douglas, Ramsey and Peel were charmingly situated, the latter being the most unforgettable. She remarked that the Isle of Man, with proper culture, could be even more beautiful than the Isle of Wight. William, however, only spent four days on the Island during July 1833, as part of his journey to the Scottish islands with his eldest son John and old friend Henry Crabb Robinson. He was urged to visit the Isle of Man by Dorothy, who furnished him with details of where to visit and avoid. Indeed, it is said that the Reverend Robert Brown (father of the Manx poet T. E. Brown) implored Dorothy to persuade her brother to visit the Island - exclaiming it to be ‘a national honour’. He later received a signed copy of William Wordsworth’s collected poems and it is known that a volume of Reverend Brown’s own works was in William’s collection. Although advised by his sister to travel anticlockwise, William pursued the other direction, expressing an interest in ascending Snaefell. He did, however, visit Ballasalla, described as ‘a little wood-embosomed village by the side of a stream upon which stands the ruined walls of an old Abbey’. He visited Thomas and Elizabeth Cookson, connected with the Wordsworth family but residing on the Isle of Man for the sake of economy. Thomas was buried in the grounds of Ballure chapel. A water-colour of Rushen Abbey, painted during the 1830s and given by William Wordsworth to Thomas Cookson, has latterly been gifted to Tynwald by his descendants.

A

William lingered in the Castletown area and King William’s College before heading towards South Barrule. He too expressed much pleasure with Peel Bay. He also confessed that on the whole he liked the Isle of Man better than he had expected, and vowed, unsuccessfully, to return with his wife. He produced ten sonnets about the Island, although one was written by Captain Henry Hutchinson. Links with the Isle of Man and the Wordsworth family abound. One of his sonnets is dedicated to Sir William Hillary (founder of the forerunner of the RNLI) who rescued many shipwrecked mariners in Manx waters and had built the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay. He also sent a copy of his plan for a Great Central Harbour in Douglas, dated 1836, to the poet. Both William and Dorothy also made friends with Sir Walter Scott, who wrote Peveril of the Peak - partially set on the Isle of Man. He was persuaded by William to include an appendix in his 1831 edition of the novel, to correct the misrepresentation of the Manx historical figures William and Edward Christian.

B

Additionally, another William Christian (from the Cumberland branch) became William Wordsworth’s headmaster and later represented the Wordsworth family in a dispute. Both families were also linked by marriage. William Wordsworth also assisted in the campaign to clear the name of Fletcher Christian (Mutiny on the Bounty) who was also part of the Cumberland branch of the family. Rumours abound of his escape after the mutiny, with suggestions that William Wordsworth may have met the celebrated mutineer, forwarding information about the saga not in the public domain - to emerge later in The Rime of an Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the voyage to the New World of the Mayflower. Caleb Johnson, author and historian behind MayflowerHistory.com writes‌ Four hundred years ago, 102 passengers, frequently referred to as the Pilgrims, set sail on the ship Mayflower, bound for the northern parts of Virginia, where they hoped to establish a small colony. The core of the passengers were religious Separatists that fled their English home parishes for Holland starting in 1607, due to increased religious persecution under King James I. Over the course of the next thirteen years the Pilgrims grew a church congregation in the town of Leiden, Holland - a country where they found religious toleration. Concerned about a potential war between Holland and Spain; worried their children were losing their English heritage and culture; and yet still unable to practice their religious beliefs back home in England, they ultimately decided to attempt a dangerous voyage to relocate their church congregation and to create a new English colony in the American wilderness. To help finance their voyage, and the first wave of colonists, they recruited like-minded individuals from a similar congregation in Amsterdam and amongst Puritan sympathizers remaining in England. Filling out the ranks were some hired hands - servants, seamen, a cooper and a militia captain named Myles Standish whose family hailed from Lancashire and the Isle of Man. The first half of the voyage went well with prosperous winds. About mid-voyage, however, the ship began to encounter storms. During one storm the main beam cracked. 6

During another a passenger named John Howland accidentally fell overboard, but he was successfully rescued. Two people died on the voyage - one passenger and one crew member. The Mayflower passengers had a patent to settle in Northern Virginia, around the mouth of the Hudson River in modern-day New York. However, they ended up arriving at Cape Cod in New England, and their attempt to sail south ended in a near shipwreck. The adult men drafted and signed a document, on 11th November 1620, that has come to be known as the Mayflower Compact. In the Compact, all the adult men agreed to establish their own elective government and be obedient to its authority. The Mayflower Compact is one of the foundational documents of American democracy. After more than a month of exploration, the Pilgrims came ashore at Plymouth in December 1620, and decided to settle and build their plantation on that location. They built their first common storehouse and their first houses. Although they had encountered some native peoples during their explorations on Cape Cod, they did not have any interactions throughout the winter months as they built their colony. In March 1620, the Wampanoag sent a visiting Abnaki named Samoset, who knew some English from the fishing vessels that visited of the coast of Maine, to understand the colonists’ intentions.

He coordinated a meeting between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag leader Massasoit Ousemequin, introducing another English-speaking native named Tisquantum, or “Squanto”. The two made a peace agreement and mutual aid pact.

A

In the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims brought in a small harvest of Indian corn, barley and peas, and made fishing voyages to supplement their food stocks. Joining with sixty Wampanoag who brought five deer, the two groups feasted, competed, celebrated and gave thanksgiving for three days; an event that is commemorated today as the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. Myles Standish of The Mayflower B

The Pilgrim Fathers engaged Myles Standish as their Captain and military leader and it is widely acknowledged that the success of the entire operation was largely due to his wisdom and leadership. Standish was descended from the Standishs of Lancashire and the Isle of Man. The family home on the Island was Ellanbane, near Ramsey, and several members of the Standish family were active in Island politics. There are many local stories linking the young Myles with the area. He joined the army in 1601 and was posted to the Netherlands. His links there with the Pilgrims are commemorated by a permanent Standish corner in Leiden Museum. His importance in the success of the New England settlement is also marked by the Myles Standish monument, which stands on Captain’s Hill in Duxbury, Massachusetts on land given to Captain Standish by the Pilgrims. The keystone of the entrance arch was presented by President Grant of the U.S.A.

Worldwide we are seeing countless acts of kindness and the coming together of communities in a bid to spread unity, care and positivity. The issue is presented on the underlying themes of strength, fortitude and love during a global crisis, celebrating the people making such a contribution to our lives; NHS workers, key staff, carers, volunteers, our community and the scientists and educators who will develop vaccines and educate our children. Similarly we wish to celebrate the kindheartedness and compassion found within our Island, as during these difficult times it is important to acknowledge these acts of kindness and care. The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of stamps that celebrates eight of the primary disciplines a Nursing or Midwife professional would undertake around the world today. The issue date coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, celebrated annually as International Nurses Day. Midwifery

Practice Nursing

Midwives are responsible for the pre, peri and post-natal care of women and babies.

Practice nurses work in GP surgeries where they hold their own clinics. They undertake many roles including immunisation programmes, smear testing, wound care and monitoring patients with chronic illnesses such as asthma or diabetes. Nurses who have completed additional training can also diagnose and prescribe medication for patients in their care.

Working in maternity units and community settings, midwives provide support and education. The profession has diversified and many midwives hold specialist posts, caring for pregnant women with special needs. Health Visiting/School Nursing Health Visitors provide health-enhancing advice and support to families with children up to school age. School Nurses oversee the wellbeing of children, and young people, from the age of 5 to 18. They engage youngsters in health promotional activities, including immunisation programmes. Hospital Nursing Nurses undertake numerous duties within the hospital setting and are pivotal in delivering and coordinating patient care. Although the majority work on the wards, many deliver care in other areas such as the emergency department, outpatients and operating theatre. Specialist nurses manage their own caseloads of patients and provide expert advice to patients and fellow colleagues. Mental Health Nursing Patients with acute or ongoing mental health issues are cared for by specialist nurses working in the hospital setting or out in the community. Practitioners also care for patients who are experiencing mental health crises; and for those with special needs such as drug or alcohol dependency, memory problems and dementia. 10

Community Nursing Patients are cared for in the community by District Nurses and specialist nurses who provide expertise in areas such as wound care, chronic conditions, dementia care and prisoner health. Community Nurses treat patients in their homes, or community clinics, where they work closely with GPs and other health professionals to deliver integrated care. Advanced Nurse Practitioner Advanced Nurse Practitioners have undertaken additional training which enables them to perform advanced diagnostic assessments of patients in their care. They are independent practitioners whose skills are utilised in hospital and community settings. Older People and End of Life Nursing Patients in their later years, or those nearing the end of life, are cared for by nurses who are adept at addressing their special needs - such as pain relief or the management of age-related conditions. Care is delivered in the patient’s own home, including care homes, or in the hospice.

Florence Nightingale – The Lady with the Lamp was born in Italy on 12th May, 1820. During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two-thirds. Her writings sparked worldwide health care reform; and, in 1860, she set up the first training school for nurses. She died 13th August 1910 in London. Nelly Brennan was a humble mangle-woman who came to prominence during the cholera epidemic of 1832-3. Whilst others shunned the gravely ill, Nelly visited them in their homes and ensured they were cared for. In recognition of her altruism, she was made the first Matron of the Douglas Hospital and Dispensary in 1850.

Esther Jane Bridson was the first Matron of the Westmoreland Road Noble’s Hospital when it opened on the 11th September 1912. She remained in post for seventeen years and was held in high respect by the hospital committee, as well as those she had cared for. Sarah Forester was Matron of the Island’s first purpose-built maternity home (now Crookall House) when it opened in 1939. She held the post for fourteen years and oversaw the births of over 5000 babies - one of which was the first Manx baby to be born during the Second World War.

Our stamp entry displays the Pilgrims as they prepare to step ashore at Plymouth Rock for the first time with an image of The Mayflower anchored in the background. This pivotal moment marked the start of a new period of civilisation in North America. The stamp also contains symbols and secrets relating to artwork along the border including co-ordinates of the stamps location, a compass, or a symbol.
