My favourite film is War horse. It is directed by Steven Spielberg and It´ s an American film, but I saw it in Spanish. In this war - drama film there appear actors like Jeremy Irvine, Emily W atson, Tom Hiddleston and obviously an amazing brown horse. Jeremy Irvine plays the role of Albert Narracott, a boy who lives in a farm in Devon with his parents. Emily Watson plays the role of Rose Narracott, Albert´s mother. Tom Hiddleston plays the role of captain Nicholls, the second owner of Joey and captain of the British army. Joey is the main charac ter and alsoa brown War horse. I really love this film beca use the story is very exciting film. My favourite part is the end, when the horse… You have to see it . I recommend you A LO T but remember, it can make you cry.

VA L E N T I N

In this writing I’ m going to give information about Valentine’s day. Valentine’s day has two stories: I will start with the 1st story. The Romans celebrated Lupercalia the 15th of February, in honor of Lupercus, the God of crop dancing with the women they picked. The 2nd story is related to Saint Valentine, in the 3rd century AD. Valentine was a Christian priest that performed marriage cured her blindness. Before he died he sent a letter signed “From your Valentine” the 14th of February. The symbols that represent Valentine’s day are: Cupid, the symbol of love & desire Heart, the symbol of love and passion. The shape comes from the siliphium plant Some phrases of the vocabulary are: To have a crush: Tener un flechazo To be shut throught the heart: Tener un disparo en el corazón To be nuts about something: estar enamorado de alguien To fell head over heels for Love at fisrt sight: Amor aprimera vista To grow old with somebody: Crecer con alguien To get struck by Cupid’s arrow: Golpeado por la flecha de Cupido To be broken heart: Tener el corazón roto For Valentine’s day people give cards, letter, flowers, chocolate or present The 14th of February is the day of lovers. In USA this day was imported by the British in the 19th Century and the practice of exchanging cards was more popular in a card to everyone in their class. Finally the importance of this celebration is love. Melisa Cisneros, 2º ESO 1

R G I M IM EMIGRATION IN THE 60´s:

My grandparents, Mercedes and Gregorio, emigrated to Switzerland to look for a better job and to earn more money. There, my grandfather worked in the construction sector and my grandmother was cleaning houses. They were living in Switzerland for four years, until my grandfather was fired. They lived in a rented house next to a silk factory. Now, they tell us how difficult it was to earn a living in a place that was not your home and that they had to work hard. There, they met many people with whom they now have almost no contact but who were very kind and good to them at that time. NOW: My uncle Pedro left for Canada about three years ago to improve his economical situation. He is dedicated to teaching children with disabilities in Spanish. He has married there and has had two children, he lives in a residential area on the outskirts of Montreal. When he comes to visit us or calls us on the phone, he tells us that there, there is a diffetent way of life and that there are more Jobs available in every sector. He also tells us that it takes a bit to adapt. Paula Alonso Serrano 4Âş ESO 1

S T N RA BEING AN EMIGRANT IN THE 50s

Many years ago, in the 1950s, my grandfather had to move to Germany to work and earn money to support his family. He started working in a factory, where he did not earn much, but he needed the money. His wife and children continued living in Spain, since moving the entire family was difficult at the time. Over time, he worked supervising factory workers and his salary increased. He did not have many holidays and rarely could return to his village to see his family, so his wife and three children moved with him to Germany. The boys did not like being there, for them it was all new, they had no friends and the language was difficult for them. So, two months later, they returned to Spain, where the situation had improved and they found work quickly.

BEING AN EMIGRANT IN THE 21ST C Two years ago, my cousin left for an Erasmus in Rome, where she lived for 1 year. She left because her grades were very good and had the opportunity to travel there to continue her university degree and at the same time she learnt the language. There, she met many people and after returning to Spain, she decided to go to work in the summer to take care of a girl from a family with a lot of money. She lived in the same house, and she only had to take care of the girl, so she practiced Italian and occasionally taught her Spanish. She is very fond of the experience because she has learned a new language that in the future she can work with, she has met new people and she knows the city of Rome.

BEING AN EMIGRANT IN THE 60s My grandparents emigrated to France in the sixties. First, my grandfather left with a work contract and he looked for a place to settle. He found a shack near a relative of him. Two or three months later, when he was settled and he had found school for his children, he returned to Spain by van for his wife and his three children. My grandmother didn’t work. My grandfather worked in a factory making animal food with animal bones. After three years they moved to a half-furnished apartment for a large family. The two older children went to school. My grandmother didn’t know any French. When she went shopping, she gave the purse to the seller so that he caught the money. When she returned home, she told her children what she had bought and what the seller had caught so that they told her if she had been cheated. She was never cheated. My grandparents were in France for 15 year. In the summers, their children returned to Spain. One summer their older son drowned in a river.

BEING AN EMIGRANT IN THE 21ST CENTURY My cousin Fabián, 28 years old, went to Brighton (England) four years ago and he is still there. In Spain, he didn’t study English but he worked in a hospital. In England, He started working as an errand boy and now he works in a hospital kitchen. When he left, he spent three years living with different families because a flat was too expensive. This year he has rented a flat with three Spanish friends that he has met there. He goes everywhere on his bike and some weekends he does picnics on the beach.

RANT EMIGRATION IN THE 60´s

S

In the 60’s, my grandfather called Ignacio emigrated to Germany to work in an automobile factory. He went to live there with my grandmother, a partner and his wife. They lived in a house the four together and while the men went to work their women did the house chores, the shopping or walked the city. For my grandmother and her friend it was very boring, because they did not know the language and their husbands worked hard and were rarely at home. They were there for eight years. During that time they only visited Spain once. In 1973 they returned to Spain definitely because my grandmother was pregnant with my mother. They did not have a great time during those years, like all emigrants.

RECENT EMIGRATION My cousin’s boyfriend, named Rubén, lives in Granada and he went to Haiti in 2010 to help people who were left homeless by the earthquake, because he is a soldier. He was with three more companions and they remained there for six months. That situation was very hard for everyone, especially for a girl they met there. The girl was 6 years old and had lost her parents and her older sister. Rubén helped her and took her with a foster family. Every once in a while the girl, named Hera, who is now 13, sends him letters.

Saint Patrick’s Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, Saint Patrick ´s death date. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day.

Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and Northern. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. And we also played a fun game: In the game we had to make sentences and with those find clues and with those clues we had to find the leprechaunts´pot of gold. We were in two teams. Maria, the teacher, hid the clues around the class and gave us hints to find the clues. IT WAS GREAT FUN!!! ADRIÁN DOMINGUEZ 1ºESO1

nt Patrick’s Day!!! Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, “the Day of the Festival of Patrick”), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick. the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption. Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland,Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival. Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. In recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations for having become too commercialised and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish. And we also made a fun game: The game tried to make phrases and with those phrases, find clues and mediane those clues we had to find the treasure we were two teams. The teacher hid the clues for the class and gave us traces to find them.

THANKSGIVING DAY In Thanksgiving Day people give thanks for the things that they have. This day is the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving day has a history: The pilgrims came to America from England in the Mayflower;the pilgrims hadn’t a good Winter, because they had no food, lots of them got ill or died.In the Spring the Indians helped the people to plant and gave food to them. In Thanskgiving tAmericans eat:turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, greavy, pumking pie… There are some activities typical of Thanksgiving too: There’s a parade with lots of balloons. After Thanksgiving dinner there’s an important American Football match and then they go Black Friday shopping.

Christmas in America On 24th December Christmas Eve is celebrated and Christmas Day is celebrated on 25th of December. Some common foods for Christmas are: Turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, apple crumble, christmas cookies… The typical Christmas decoration for doors are wreaths. At night you put a stocking on your bed and if you have been good, Santa will fill it with presents, but if you are bad Santa will put coal in it. A Christmas Carol is a carol (song or hymn) whose lyrics are on the theme of Christmas, and which is traditionally sung at Christmas. Salvation Army centers across the UK collect donations at Christmas.

JOBS

Last Tuesday 31st of January, we watched in class a brilliant speech of Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs didn’t finish University because his parents didn’t have enough money. When he decided to finish it, he did a course in calligraphy because he was very interested in it. At the beginning, he thought that the course wasn’t going to be useful, but he was wrong. When he created Apple’s company in his twenties, he used the different styles of letters he learnt on his Apple project. Later, when he was 30, he was fired from Apple. Nevertheless, it wasn’t a barrier for him because he founded a new company. Then, the failure turned out into success because Apple bought his new business. That period was one of the best periods of his life: he became on the maker of Pixar (one of the best animation studies of the world) and Next. Unfortunately, doctors discovered that he had got a pancreas cancer. The doctor said him that he only had 3 months of life… However and thank God, it could be cured. He talked about all that trough three stories: “Connecting the dots”, “Love and loss” and “Death”. During the speech, he is constantly saying motivational phrases; some of them are “Keep looking, don’t settle” and “Stay Hungry, stay foolish”. These phrases made me reflect about my life, he motivated me and he guided me to follow the right way. Now, I’m surer than ever that I am always going to do what I love. Now I know that every day I have to look at me on the mirror and say to me… “If I were to die today, would I have done everything I wanted?” As he said, “If you live your day as if it was your last, some day you’ll certainly be right”. From my point of view, this is one of the best speeches I have ever listened to. It is so encouraging and motivating that… I would see it again. I absolutely recommend it to you, it’s worth it! María Juárez Camacho, 2º BH Portfolio

I have never heard about this speech but once I have listened to it, I totally agree with this man. I think that everybody has to fight for reaching their wishes and for having the life they want and Steve Jobs is the clearest example of this. Although he had a hard life because he quitted university because he didn’t like it, he got fired of Apple and he was on the brink of death because of his cancer, he overcame all his difficulties and he always followed his dreams. He is still happy, he is still reaching his aims and he also encourages other people to do the same. I would recommend this speech to everyone to open their minds and change their point of view. There is always at least one reason to smile and it is that you are alive. I would describe this lecture in three words: emotional, inspiring and clever. Inés León Ríos 2ºBachillerato PEL

Steve Jobs was the founder of Apple. When he was born, he was adopted by another family. When Steve grew up, he got very good marks at school, and when he finished high school he had got the privilege to go to a very prestigious university, but his family did not have a lot of money and he decided to leave it. Steve divided his life into three steps, the fist one it is call “Connecting the dots” and he tries to transmit that some decisions in your life can mark or determine your future, but you can only see it backwards. The second step is “Love and loss”, and it receives this name because Steve was fired from work, but he continued in love with his job. The last step is called “Your time is limited” because the doctor said to Steve that he had got a very serious illness and he had little time left of life. In my opinion this speech is astonishing because it shows us that Steve did not have an easy life. He was a person with a lot of problems in his life but he has got the ability to overcome them. I recommend this speech for people that, like me, don’t know what they want to to study in the future, he ,at first ,did not know what he wanted to do with his life, but finally he found what he really loved. My favourite part of the speech is the moment that he realizes that all th useful for his future. In conclusion I think that this talk is amazing and if I have to describe it in MOTIVATING AND EMOTIONAL.

Articles and toughts on Jobs’ lecture at Stanford graduation ceremony

When I saw that video I thought about my future. Although it seems absurd, I thought about what I am going to do in my future, or when I finish my degree at University. I don’t know how is going to be my future life, but I am sure whatever happens, I will face things positively. This video has transmitted me the confidence that I need. It is also a motivating speech, because it says to us that we have to find another solution when we have a problem, and that solution can be better than the first option. Talking about the speech itself, I am completely ascinated. The way which Steve Jobs talks about his personal experience in order to make the students think that there is a positive thing in each problem is awesome. I would recommend it, especially to those people who are a bit pessimistic. Don’t worry, take things easy an enjoy your life. Moreover, I think that this video is an example of overcoming. I love the part in which he says that he had cancer. He explains that although you have bad news, there is always a reason to continue living. Finally, if I have to describe this speech, I will say that it is a clear example of “Never give up”, because nowadays the key to success is being able to continue when the others have surrendered.
