Priot Ilyich Tchaikovsky The “Swan Lake” and “The “The Nutcracker” were two of my favourite’s stories when I was a child. When we talked about Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in Music lessons I liked so much, because this composer composed for these two stories and for many other stories. Tchaikovsky was born in Votinsk, Russia on 7th May 1840. At the age of 8, his family and him moved to St. Petersburg. When he was a child, he was a good musician, but his parents made him study law. After his graduation, he moved to Moscow to teach music there. Tchaikovsky wrote many different styles of music, but his most famous pieces of music was ballets. Tchaikovsky died on 6th November 1893. When my teacher showed “The “The Nutcracker” ballet video, I loved it, because, it’s a beautiful ballet

AN AMAZING STORY The story of Arthur Winstol by Patricia Ignacio 3ºESO1 Arthur Winstol was a young man in great trouble. He was a stranger in the city with no work and no money to buy food. He was an engineer in his hometown but just as everything was going well, he had a problem. His father died and he went to a new city because he wanted to forget about this piece of bad news. That new city was Roundfull. Roundfull is an amazing city with very nice people, but Arthur had no money and work, so he tried to find a job in the city. He began as a sailor and he liked it. Everything was going well, but one day he saw a beautiful woman in the port. She was called Claire, she was slim, she had curly long brown hair and green eyes. He fell in love immediately. Two months later, he began to work as an engineer again for a famous man in the country. So he was going to meet this important man, but he had not forgotten about that girl. He wanted to see her again. Throughout the week he looked for her but he had no luck. The last day he saw her through the window at the train station. She was the ticket inspector. Suddenly, when the train had just started to leave, he tried to do something to stop the train but he was unable to. When he arrived in his new city, he thought about Claire. Ten years later, he had become a very famous engineer. He had a very big house and a very big car. But he didn´t care about money. He still thought of Claire. One day he decided to return to Roundfull. He wanted to find Claire. He spent a week there, but he thought it would be impossible to find her. When he was going back to his house in his new city, he saw Claire at the train station again. But this time he wasn´t on the train. He stopped her and they talked a lot. Arthur told her his story and Claire, amazed, fell in love too. He decided to quit his job and stay with her in Roundfull with little money but happy.

ADVERTS

In this advert there is a car, it’s grey and big and it has big wheels it’s an Audi Q7 and it drives through water, it’s like a beach and this advert wants to prove that this car has a lot of power and strength to walk on water. This is an advert for a car company. Car companies make these adverts so that people think, these cars are good, with strength… and are good cars that are powerful, and they convince people and then they buy these cars. I think they use car magazines and billboards to advertise these cars. The Real Madrid footballers use these cars because Audi manufacturers give players these cars for advertising and so people buy them. I like this advert because I like cars and I love this one. When I have a driving license I'm going to buy this car. I like this advert because it reminds me of going to the beach on holiday. I really like this ad because it shows that this Audi has the strength to go on difficult roads like the beach. The only bad thing that this advert has is that I can’t see the car completely and if the lights were on, it would be more beautiful.

DESCRIPTION OF AN ADVERT In this advert, you can see many things. In the centre there is a model, Fernando Alonso, who is wearing plain black trousers, a plain black shirt and comfortable black shoes. In front of the model there is a big black horse which has a shiny coat. The model is holding the horse by a rope and they are looking at each other. They are in a room with some pictures, all very old. It seems an ancient kings´ castle. This advert is for a company which sells watches, it is called Viceroy. I believe that the advert appears on television, magazines and newspapers, which we usually watch or read. In my opinion, they have chosen Fernando Alonso because in a Formula 1 track you have little time to give your best. The same thing happens every day. But the difference between one thing and the other is that life is a chain, what you do one day, it affects the rest of your life. And on the track when you want to take it in you have to start again. It means that time passes by very quickly and you have to take advantage of it. I like this advert because a very beautiful horse appears and I like them very much. I like it because it has got plenty of detail as well. I think that people will not understand this advert when they see it, because it´s a bit difficult to infer. The model is too brave to stand in front of the horse because this horse is very imposing.

Description of an advert In this advert, there are two models on a motorbike. There is a boy who is wearing a plain grey cotton T-shirt, blue denim jeans, a black belt and a silver watch. There is also a girl who is wearing an elastic red lycra dress. The girl is eating a red apple and under them there are two perfume bottles shaped like a red apple. They are hugging each other on a motorbike in the city. I think that the models aren’t famous. This is an advert for a company which sells fragrances for men and women; this company (DKNY) is very famous all over the world and a bit expensive. I think they use this advert in magazines, on billboards in the city centre… It seems to me that they are trying to sell this perfume to glamorous people, because models are celebrities and DKNY is an expensive brand. I like this advert because the photo is very beautiful and I like the fragrances and if they are by DKNY I like them even more. This advert reminds me of the summer because the models are wearing summer clothes. In my opinion, It seems to me this advert is very striking for people, because girls who look at the model, will want to be like her.

Description of an advert

In this advert, there is an Stradivarius model who is wearing a short, beautiful, new, flowery blue, red, yellow and pink, silk, Chinese dress. She is sitting on a chair in a garden, sunbathing. The model is comfortable on the chair, but it seems that the sun bothers her so she covers her face. This is an advert for a company which sells all kinds of clothes. These adverts can be seen in women's fashion magazines and sometimes on billboards in big cities. With this advert they are trying to sell clothes to young women, so that they feel comfortable and free, because the model on the chair is an example of being relaxed. I like the advert because the model makes me feel comfortable buying clothes and also because I almost always see people wearing Stradivarius clothes. The outfit that the model is wearing along with shoes and accessories is very nice and I would buy them for partying because Stradivarius is not a very expensive clothing brand.

DESCRIPTION OF AN ADVERT In this advert we can see a young and strong man, he is not very tall. His eyes are dark and his hair is brown. He is wearing a beautiful brown plain leather jacket, modern blue and white denim jeans which are torn, a plain, pale blue shirt and a pair of plain white trainers which look comfortable. He is just leaving a clothing store. I believe that this clothes’ shop belongs to Dolce & Gabbana because this is the company which the model represents. Behind the model we can see an exhibition of pictures which have photos in which they have painted men with expensive clothes. The model has a bag in his left hand, so, in my opinion, he is going shopping. The model is Lionel Messi. Everybody knows who he is. Leo is wearing Dolce & Gabbana's clothes which he is advertising, because, as far I can see, everybody watches him when he is in a public place. He is known worldwide, so probably, Dolce & Gabbana has chosen him because all the sport's journalist take photos of him when he is in the street, in the stadium, with his family, when he must go to sports awards... and he is a role model for a lot of people. Dolce & Gabbana is a famous Italian fashion brand which is popular in many countries. It was found in 1985 in Milan, by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Other famous footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckhan were the faces of this fashion brand a few years ago. I think that these adverts are on billboards near big cities, on posters, in bus stops, in crowded shopping streets... It seems to me that Dolce & Gabbana has had a good idea because Messi appears every day on TV and when people see that he is wearing Dolce & Gabbana clothes, everyone wants to have these clothes as Messi is an idol for young people. The company increases its income as more people will buy these clothes. I like this advert because, in my opinion, Messi is a very humble person, he is a good example for young people and he rarely does bad or silly things. He is shy, humble and generous because he collaborates with NGOs. I don't think that Messi was ready for the photo in this one, and he looks unprepared, so I think that it is good, because he looks natural without lights, make-up or anything like that. He is simply walking along the street and someone takes a photo of him. His height isn't too good but think that , apart from that, he's a good model

DESCRIPTION OF AN ADVERT

This photograph is from Melbourne. In this photo, you can see a man wearing a silk blue shirt, a cotton black tie and a cotton black waistcoat. He is wearing a pair of black shoes and black jeans and a very cool black hat. He’s sitting on the floor, looking to his left. He seems to be thinking about something or waiting for somebody. This is an advert for a company which sells all types of clothing. I believe that the clothes they make are very fashionable and elegant, but they are obviously expensive. They use these photos to show their new collections and to become better-known. They show these photos in magazines, in TV ads, on the internet and in more places. It seems to me that they are trying to sell this clothing to people whose work is ‘important’, such as businessmen; or just for a day in which you have to wear something special for an important event, because the model in the picture is very elegant. I like this advert, because the clothing is very cool and because it is also informal, but I would not buy it because it is not normal clothing for a normal day. I don’t think that people would use it for going to buy bread or something like that. In my opinion, people buy clothes because they have seen them on TV or in a magazine in which the model looks very good in them, but when they use the same clothes they don’t suit them so well and yet they wear them because it is ‘in’.

FASHIONS DIRNDL

Diego Rubio 4ยบ ESO 1

It's a typical Bavarian and Austrian dress, it is worn by young women. Originally it comes from the Western Alps. This dress was initially for peasants, then for maids and around 1870 it became popular among the aristocracy. In this photo it is green, white and black. She has got a dirndl which has a green plain apron, a white short sleeved blouse with ruffles on the sleeves and a frill around the neck; finally, the dirndl has got a black flowery dress over the shirt and under the apron. In my opinion this is a beautiful dress for young women, because it encourages joy and freshness and it is more or less elegant. The dirndl is a dress from the 19th Century, it originated in the Western Alps. Now, this dress is a regional garment for people and a symbol of the country, but they aren't popular for everyday life. I think that this garment is too short for the 19th Century, because at that time people were less open than today, but I believe that it was a good garment for celebrations in the 19th Century.

Bell-Bottoms Bell-Bottoms are peculiar trousers which in Spain started to be fashionable in the 70s, but previously in the United States they had become popular with the hippie movement. This item of clothing can be for men and women but I think that it is more usual on women than on men. Bell-Bottoms are made with cotton, denim (like in the photo) but any material can be used for making Bell-Bottoms. Bell-Bottoms are normal trousers but they are narrow from waist to knees and they are wide (like a bell) from knees to the feet. They are still in fashion because now retro clothing is fashionable, you can find Bell-Bottoms in many fashion stores. In my opinion, I think that it is a ridiculous fashion because when I see some people with it I want to laugh. It is only for hippie people, but for me these clothes should not exist. The only person that looked good in these trousers was Elvis Presley.

The Giraffe Women

In Maynmar, Thailand, since 1990, women have worn golden rings around their neck to lengthen it by 30cm with 32 rings. From the age of five years old worn, the rings are put on to lengthen the neck and that will slowly press down on the clavicle. It's a good way to get money from the tourists who want to see women with such long necks. The Thai government wanted to end this trend to change the poor image of the country, but the women have not allowed to end this tradition that attracts many tourists. I do not like it because it produces a lot of neck. It also causes embarrassment . Seeing it also produces shame, because the women have to do that just to get money for the whole tribe.

SCARY STORIES Photographs

There was a girl named Alicia who lived in a small town. Alicia loved going out with her friends and taking photographs of strange things like elderly people, abandoned houses, dead animals, shadows… but Alicia had never taken photos of herself, because she thought that she was ugly. She was responsible for taking photos of her friends. On Halloween night Alicia had planned to go to the cemetery with her friends and she took her camera as always. When they arrived Alicia took a photo of her friends, in front of the cemetery´s gate. When Alicia saw the photograph she observed a black bulge, but she thought that it was a tree. They went into the cemetery and Alicia took a photo of each of her friends in different places and she observed that in all the photos the same black bulge appeared. Each time it was bigger and more obvious, but she didn’t want to say anything. Finally, in the last photograph that Alicia took, an elderly woman with a black coat could be seen next to one of her friends. Alicia, scared, ran to her house. When she arrived she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth and went to sleep. When she was in the bathroom she had an impulse and she took a photo of herself in front of the mirror. Alicia observed the photograph and she saw the elderly woman with the black coat covering her eyes. Alicia turned and she saw that there was no one there, but she stretched her arm and she touched a silhouette. She asked: –Who are you? –What do you want from me? She turned again and she saw that in the mirror there was a message: –Don’t be afraid, I am your grandmother.

VOICES BY AMANDA RODRÍGUEZ 4ºESO 1 My name is Elisabeth and this is my story: I was born on 19th November 1719 in Valea Viilor, a small village near Transilvania. Fifteen years later, I was murdered. Valea Viilor was a quiet village, people were friendly but there weren't children to play with, so my friend was a spirit. When my sister Debie was born I was four, I liked walking into the forest and watching the birds fly, sometimes I sang with them. When Debbie was born I felt happy, but soon she became my nightmare. One day, I went out to walk into the forest, I was alone. I started singing, I felt a shiver and the birds flew away. I decided to go back home, otherwise my mother would be angry, as the moon was soon going to come out. I arrived at home, my parents were looking for me and my sister was crying. I felt a shiver again. That night it was cold and there was a full moon. Everbody was sleeping but I was still awake. I could hear someone crying, but it soon stopped. Finally, I fell asleep. The next day I got up early and I went to the forest. I met a boy, he was my age more or less, I had never seen him before. -Hello, I have never seen you before, I'm Elisabeth, what's your name? - I asked. He didn't say anything but wrote something on the ground. Jade. -I suppose that is your name.- I said. Finally, I had a friend. Jade helped me choose some beautiful flowers and then I returned home. -I will come back this afternoon! - I said. He smiled. In the afternoon I went to the forest again, I went every day and we played. Some time later I could hear his voice even when we were far away. Jade always told me that I couldn't say that I knew him, because someone would kill him again. Debbie was 10, but she wasn't a normal child. One evening Jade told me that he was a spirit, his sister had killed him. And he told me that I had to help him. Some weeks later we hadn't discovered anything. -Maybe if you could see this person...- I said. Suddenly, Jade gave me his necklace, I put it on. I came home and the necklace started getting red and hot. I took it off and put it on the table. The next day, I went to the forest but Jade wasn't there. I came back to my home, and I found the necklace on Debbie's bed, but it was broken. I never saw Jade again. That night I listened to voices that said “kill her”. I was becoming crazy. I tried to kill Debbie twice, but she was stronger than me. One month later I appeared dead in the forest, she had murdered me.

THE WITCH AND THE VIOLIN Once upon a time a village had a legend. A long time ago, there were three witches who knocked on the neighbours´ doors and took away their children. The witches took the children to their lair on top of a mountain. They locked the children up in cages and then, they put them in potions. One day, a girl threw the three witches into the potions. The girl opened the cages where the other children were and they ran away. The girl, very brave, stayed there and she saw the witches melt in the potions. The girl slept there. Next morning, when the girl woke up, she looked in the mirror and she saw that her body had changed. Her skin got a green colour, she got an aged face, her nose was pointed with a small black wart on top. Her hands had changed as well, she had got long and slender fingers. The girl was frightened and she thought of going to visit her mother. She went down the hillside of the mountain and she found an old violin, she first looked both ways and then took it. Playing the violin to comfort her, she arrived to the village. Everybody was frightened and ran away to their houses. She thought that her mother would run away too, so she stayed in the village square and she played her violin. While she was playing the violin, the people listened to her melodies. The girl went to her lair. There, she put on a purple robe, a purple hat with a belt and brown boots, belonging to one of the witches. The village met in the square and they decided to capture the witch and burn her on the bonfire. They put a musician in the centre playing a violin. The witch, when she heard it, thought that the village was welcoming her so she went there. She reached the square and the people surrounded her and locked her up in a cage. The village made a big bonfire and they tied the witch to a stake in the centre. They lit a branch and, quickly, everything burnt. The witch, suffering, gathered all her forces and flew into the sky. The people ran away to their houses very frightened. The witch, to avenge what had happened, decided to go to the streets of the village playing her violin and scaring the neighbours every night.

Scary Story Once upon a time, in Canada, people said that in a house, near the river, they could hear a lot of noises. They were very frightened, and nobody would go out at night. But one day, a little boy, tired of staying at home, escaped. He was only six years old! Everyone was crying, they knew that the boy would never go back home. His sister went to look for him. When she went to the river, she found a little child. The child was torn apart. She cried and cried for a very long time. But a month later, no one remembered the boy and no one remembered the house by the river. On Halloween, the children went out “Trick or Treating”. They knocked on the abandoned house and the boy, who had disappeared, opened the door. He invited them to come in. When the children went inside the house, they saw a lot of toys, sweets and many nice things. But one of the children didn’t come in, because the boy’s face looked familiar to him. He tried to run away and warn the other boys´ families, but when he arrived at the town, all the lights went off, and George, the boy who had disappeared a month before, made him suffer what he himself had suffered first. Nothing has ever been heard about these children.

fàÉÜç Éy [tÄÄÉãxxÇ Once there was a young couple who couldn't have children. Five years after marrying the woman became pregnant and had a girl named Amy. When she was four years old they moved to a big house at the end of the street. Amy was very happy because it had a very large garden where she could play with her dolls. Shortly after living there, Amy's father gave her a porcelain doll similar to the girl. Amy was very happy because she had a new doll to play, sleep and do many more things with it. When she was five years old the doll disappeared. Her parents searched all over town and in the woods but could not find it. One night, while the mother was sleeping she heard Amy´s laughter, so she got up and went to Amy's room and there was the doll again. Every night it was the same, she heard her laugh, she went to her room and there was only the doll. The parents were locked up in a mental hospital because they said they heard the laughter of their daughter and people said that it was impossible because their daughter was dead. When they came out of hospital they decided to sell the house. When they were packing the last of their daughter's things, the bell rang, the father opened the door and found a wrapped box. When they opened it, they found their daughter transformed into a terrifying porcelain doll with no eyes and with the mouth sewn and the true porcelain doll had disappeared from the house. Fifteen years after these events the people of the village keep saying that if you go into the house at night you can hear the laughter of the doll and of little Amy.

Scary Story

Diego Rubio 4Âş ESO 1

Our story begins in a farm near a small village, this village was a mysterious place because the young people went to the nearest city and they didn't come back, they lived in the city; in this town only old people lived there and they were friendly and happy, but when the visitors asked the old people where the young people were, they always answered with a serious face: -Nobody wants to live in a place like this. Visitors thought that they said that because young people needed jobs, more people, more shops, or something like that; but the old people didn't say it was only for this reason: Sixty years ago, on 1st November a group of friends between 12 and 16 years old went camping in a meadow, the teenagers didn't stop laughing, singing, dancing...; A neighbouring farmer got angry because he couldn't sleep and he went to the camping site and told them off because of the noise but they ignored him. The man, very angry, put their fire out and returned home to sleep. The teenagers were very angry too, they went silently to his farm and poured oil in front of his door, then, they knocked on his door and hid behind some bushes. When the man opened the door, he slipped on the oil and hit his head on a rock; as a result, he was dead. The friends were worried and returned to their homes in the village, but they never said anything about it. The man was found after two days and everyone thought that he had died accidentally and he was buried in the cemetery. One day, a girl crying said to her friends that they should tell the truth. The other teens threatened her: If she said something about the murder, the farmer's murderers would kill her, but the girl told the truth about the murder to her parents and when she was walking along a dark alley, the teens that played the joke on the farmer caught her and abducted her. They told her that if she told the truth, they would kill her. She didn't promise anything because she felt guilty, so, they killed her. They were cowards and killed her because if they didn't do this, she would have told the truth and they would have been put in prison. Nobody knew who the girl's killer was , but in the cemetery, under the ground, something began to move. The farmer's spirit came out and possessed a black cat, this cat was totally normal, but, when the moon was full, he became a ghost. This ghost passed through the walls and only looked directly into the teens´eyes. The teens began to disappear at night. They simply faded away as dust, but the death of the guy who killed the girl was horrible: he was in his room and, suddenly, the door began to move; then his bed began to levitate; after that, the ghost appeared in front of him and projected horrible things to the ceiling, so the guy became crazy and he ripped his eyes out; he fell onto the floor with his face soaked in blood, his mouth wide open and his hands over his head. 60 years later people still haven´t forgotten this horrible event and they say that the village is cursed, no one wants to live in that place...

HALLOWEEN STORY DAVID LÓPEZ 4ºESO1 One night, I went with my friends Pedro, Jose and Juan around town. That night was a very special night, because it was Halloween. When we arrived at the square, my friends and I decided to play football with an old ball that was in the litter. We were playing football when Jose fell down, and he broke his arm, we decide to go with Jose to his house because the hospital was closed. When we arrived to Jose´s house, I saw a strange man with big boots who was crossing the street. We went into the house but there wasn´t anybody there. I decided to call an ambulance because Jose was crying, but the telephone was broken. Then, I heard some strange sounds like people crying. Everything went dark as there was no light. All was dark because there wasn’t light. Pedro decided to go to the kitchen and get the other telephone to call the police, but twenty minutes later Pedro had disappeared I decided to stay in the living room because the doors were closed. Suddenly, a big witch appeared in the middle of the living room crying. The previous day my cousin had told me the story of a witch that was a girl who was afraid and if you woke her up she would kill you. Juan touched the witch and she jumped in front of Juan and threw him and when all hope was lost, my cousin turned on the light and said, that it was a joke, Pedro appeared and I calmed down. The next day Jose hadn’t broken his arm, it only was a wound. Everything was normal again but this joke wasn’t funny.

OUR HOLIDAYS MY HOLIDAYS IN TENERIFE The last week of August I went to Tenerife with my family. The first day we went to the beach and there we went for a walk along the Maritime Promenade. Then we went to the hotel to eat. When we finished with our lunch, we rested and then we went to the hotel swimming pool. The second day we rented a car for all the week and we went to the village Icod de los Vinos, to visit de oldest tree in the world, Drago Milenario. We took some photos and then we went to Garachico to eat and to visit the San Pedro de Daute Parish. The third day we went to the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and there we visited some things in the city. Then we went to Teresitas Beach and we were swimming there. This beach didn´t have surfers because there is a dike built and there are no waves, neither there are any fish. The fourth day we went to La Orotava which is near the volcano El Teide. There we went around El Teide to see El Zapatito de la Reina and El Dedo de Dios. They are forms that the lava let there and they have those names. We climbed to the top of the volcano in a cable car. On the top of the volcano it was very cold and windy but that was worth it. Up there, there was a fabulous view! The fifth day we went to Faro de Teno. The trip was long but it was worth going there. When we arrived, there were a lot of people. There were people diving too. On the way we stopped in a viewpoint and if you looked down, you could see the clear sea water. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! The sixth day we went to the beaches Las Américas and Los Cristianos. There, we didn´t swim because we didn´t have any swimsuits. There were a lot of foreigners. In the afternoon we went to Los Gigantes and we saw the cliffs. The seventh day we went to Loro Parque, a park with a lot of animals. There we saw: monkeys, penguins, a lot of types of fish, sharks, birds, a show of parrots, a show of dolphins and another one of gallows, seals, a giant tortoise, tigers, crocodriles,... We spent the day there. And finally, the last day in the morning we went to the Lago Martianez and we swam and we had a great time. In the afternoon we packed the suitcases to return to Navalmoral.

AN AWESOME CITY IN GERMANY,FRANKFURT! by Aroa Cerezo 4ºESO1 The real name of the city is Frankfurt am Main, but it is more known as Frankfurt. Frankfurt is a city in the south of Germany, in Hesse’s state and its administration region is Darmstadt. Is the largest city in this state and it is the fifth-largest-city in Germany. The river Main passes through it. It is a good city to visit because it is the financial centre in continental Europe and it has a lot of banks such as the European Centre Bank, the German Federal Bank and many others. The best time to visit Frankfurt for me is the summer, because its summer is like Spanish spring, there are 28 or 29 degrees celsius if it is cloudy, or if it is sunny may be there are 34 or 35 degrees celsius. If you went in winter you would see snow, because there it usually snows. The best way to go is by plane, because it has a lot of airports. But if you want you can go by bus or by car, too. Here in autumn and winter you can do skiing or in summer you can do swimming or sailing in lakes or in rivers. The best things to see are Romerberg, the old central square where the town hall is, and the Main evening along the banks. If you go up on one of the banks you will see the whole Frankfurt. The gothic cathedral is awesome, it’s so big, it’s red more or less and it has a clock on top of the tower. You can stay in a hotel because there are a lot. If you visit Frankfurt, you will need an umbrella because there it usually rains. Maybe you will need a jacket too, if it is cold. And if you want take photos, you will need a camera.

MY HOLIDAY by Maria Lirón 3ºESO1 Last summer holidays were really good! I finished school in June. The second of July I went to Northampton with my friend Ángela. My parents came with us to the airport but we did the checking alone, because my father and my mother needed to come to Navalmoral again. It was a funny adventure. On the fly we were sleeping. When we arrived to London we were a little bit lost.At the airport a policeman talked with us about our trip to London. We were very nervous. In Holcot we went to high school. We made a lot of good friends. We went to the cinema twice. We saw “The Amazing Spiderman” and “Snowwhite and the Hunter”.They were so good. Another day we went to a “Jungle park” as in Granada. When we came to Spain again I went with my family to Alicante for two weeks. In Alicante I have a lot of cousins, and I always have a great time there. One day we went to the karts, and we had a really good time all together. Another day we went to the beach and we took kayaks and we did some competitions. One day we went to the drive-in cinema with our friends and family. It was so good. Some days we went to the beach. When I came back to Navalmoral I was in Facebook with my English friend Henry. He was in Badajoz with his family, and we came with them to a water park. The other days I stayed in Navalmoral with my friends. Then it was my birthday and I celebrated a very big party with my friends. On the twelfth of September we had a surprise birthday party for María Ramos, it was great.

MY HOLIDAYS Last summer I was in Málaga with my sister, my brother and his girlfriend. We were only for four days, but it was fun. We slept in my sister's house. One day after breakfast, we went to the beach, it was hot but the sea was a bit cold. We ate there. Later, at 7 o´clock, more or less, we walked along the shore of the beach. There were many market stalls. A woman did leather braids for hair and she put me one. In the evening we dined in a restaurant near the beach. The next day we went to Marbella, it is very beautiful, I love Marbella. There were a lot of shops everywhere. We could see many boats and many expensive cars too. In Marbella we were on a beautiful beach, there was a small lighthouse. We walked while we ate an icecream. Another day we visited the cathedral of Málaga too, it is wonderful. That day, in the evening, we went to the beach and the sand was cold, it was very beautiful. We also visited some small villages near the beach, the streets were very narrow and a lot of fishermen live in these villages . In addition, I was at the festivities of my village in July and August and I was at the festivities of Navalvillar too, I've enjoyed myself very much.

LAST SUMMER WAS GREAT!

DIARY OF A SUMMER This summer has been really funny for me, I haven't travelled this year, but I have stayed in my town and in the nearby villages. I have spent an unforgettable summer with my friends. In addition, I have met new people and I have made a lot of friends. In my village, I went to the swimming pool with my brother many days at midday, then, in the afternoon, I played a football match with my friends or I went to walk with my friends and their dogs. Finally, in the evening I went out with them in my village, we went to the park in front of the town hall because there, there was Wi-fi and we could connect to the Internet on our mobile phones. One day I went with my parents and my brother to Plasencia to renew our IDs and, after that, we visited beautiful places , for example “Garganta la Olla”, “Piornal” “Cuacos de Yuste”... I thought that this trip was going to be boring, however, I changed my opinion quickly because these places are really nice and my brother is a funny person because that day I laughed a lot with him. One day my friends and I rode on our bikes and went from our village to a nearby town “Roturas”, we cycled around 16 Km. When we were coming back, my bike's chain broke and I had to walk back to Robledollano . At night I was really tired, but it was great and funny and perhaps we'll do the same route soon. I stayed in Madrid too, on the 7th of July, my friends and I went to Aquopolis, it was a hot day, so we spent the whole day in the swimmingpools, slides and other rides, some of my friends and I got some false tattoos on our necks, but these tattoos disappeared in one week. Moreover, I have stayed in a lot of villages festivities with my friends, and there, I have met a lot of people. The summer has been too short in my opinion but it has been an incredible summer. Benidorm Benidorm is a coastal town located in the province of Alicante, Valencian community, Spain. It’s a beautiful place with a very big and clean sea, many shopping centres, “Terra Mítica”, Aquópolis ...You can go to trips and see attractions in and around Benidorm. The best time to visit Benidorm is in summer because they have a very beautiful sea and it isn’t cold. You can go to museums because there are five different ones. Many tourists go to Benidorm in summer because there are a lot of fishing tournaments and also in the winter is a good time to go. If you don`t like the sea you don´t have to go there as there are a lot of tournaments: hunting, football, basketball, tennis, mountain bike, paintball and there are a lot of things to do in this city. I went to Benidorm last summer and I recommend you to see these three places : 1.Aqualandia is located near Mundomar and Playa Levante. It`s the biggest water amusement park in Spain and in that park there are rides for children and for adults.

2. Another place you should be sure to visit is Terra Mitica. It’s a very big theme park and there a lot of rides, but these are more for adults because they are more impressive. It is the biggest park in the Valencian Community.

3. Mundomar is a theme park centered about marine animals and tropical birds. You can see a lot of animals like dolphins, whales…. and a lot of birds. It`s a good experience.

If you go to Benidorm you can see dolphins in the sea and there is a dolphin museum and you can touch the dolphins and you can take pictures of them. I recommend you visit Benidorm because it’s a beautiful city.

MUSIC REVIEW NOTHING BUT THE BEAT The album that I’m going to review is the fifth album by the Dj David Guetta, which is called “Nothing But the Beat”. This album was released on August 26th 2011 by Virgin and EMI. Since then that it has sold over a million copies in Europe alone. It achieved a top 10 position in twenty-three different countries, eight of those were as number 1. The album’s genre is pop/house/urban-dance. The album’s price is now 6.70€. The magazines “Allmusic” and “Rolling Stone” review the album positively, giving it three out of five gold stars. However, “Entertainment Weekly” and “The AV Club” give it only B- and C-, respectively.

Overall the reviews seem to be favourable. My favourite song is “Titanium”. It is about an anti-love song. It tells of a failed romance story. The imagery is violent and it is about guns. Perhaps reflecting modern obsession with guns and violent imagery (war video games), as it is often repeated, but suggesting that the central figure is immune to pain. She doesn’t care about the result of the relationship. The use of Titanium also reflects modern fascination with a “new” metal which is expensive and fashionable, found in many designer products which appeal to the young and wealthy. Since his debut album, “Just a little More Love” (2002), David Guetta’s musical and lyrical styles have not changed. Ten years of success! Why change a winning formula? This is definitely one of the best albums I have ever heard. I love this genre of music and David Guetta does it as well, if not better, than anyone else in pop music today. His style may not have changed, but his standards haven’t dropped either. For anyone seriously interested in pop/house/urban-dance, he and his music are the best.

BOOK REVIEWS

ZAIRA ÁLVAREZ 4ºESO1 Title: A 3 metros sobre el cielo

Author: Federico Moccia

Publishing house: Planeta

Place and edition´s year: Italy, 1992

Number of pages: 416

Gender: Dramatic and romantic

This book talks about two young people who fall in love and have a beautiful relationship:Baby is a girl from the upper class with a good education and Step is a boy who becomes irresponsible due to family problems. They fall in love and have a beautiful love story until Step loses his best friend and becomes violent, so she decides to end their story forever. The ending is very sad. The main characters are: Babi is the female main character of the story. She is 16 years old. She is a high-class girl, educated, disciplined… Step is the male main character of the story. He is 19 years old. He’s tall, he’s got dark brown eyes, and is warm and welcoming, although a little rough, always cursing, like his friends. He’s strong, muscular and handsome. He usually wears jeans and black leather jackets. He is a street thug who steals, destroys, takes part in motorcycle races... Dani is 14 years old. She’s Babi’s young sister. Paolo Mancini is Step's older brother. Pallina Lombardi is Baby’s best friend. She’s 16 years old and goes to school with Babi. Pollo is 19 years old. He is Step’s best friend. All the characters that appear in the story are always in problematic situations, because the main topic of the story is street violence. I can relate to the main character of the story because I always like to dress well and be with my friends, but her biggest mistake is falling in love with someone she should not have chosen. I really like this book, especially the part in which Hugo leads Carla to fulfil one of her dreams, living in a house in front of the sea. I recommend this book to anyone over 18, but especially to girls, because they will like the love story between the characters very much.

The title of this book is Tengo ganas de ti by Federico Moccia. The genre of the book is romance and drama. It has got 494 pages. Planeta Internacional is the publishing house and it was published in Barcelona in October 2010. The book tells a story about a romance. The boy, Step, ran away to New York to forget a girl, Babi. Two years later, he came back to Barcelona to start his life. One day, he meets a beautiful girl, Ginebra, and they begin to get to know each other until they fall in love. They do lots of things together. Step decides to go to visit Babi and they can´t stop themselves kissing. Gin becomes aware of it and she gets angry with Step, but then she forgives him. The main characters are Step, Gin and Babi, and they are real people. In the story they tried to improve their lives and their feelings. Step ran into a trouble with a man because they were fighting to defend Gin. My favourite character is Step, because he is a very good and generous person, he is very handsome as well. I can relate myself to the character Gin because she is responsible, cheerful and she loves photography. I have done plenty of the things that the characters do in the story and I also feel connected to the book. Tengo ganas de ti is the best book I have ever read. My favourite part is when Gin and Step had their first date, because it is such a beautiful part that you want to be one of the characters. And my least favourite part is when Step races with a man to recover his deceased friend´s motorbike, because I remember plenty of bad things. I would change the ending of the romance because I want Step and Babi to fall in love again, they are a good couple. I recommend this book to all the young people who like romantic stories and if they are sentimental, they will like the book. ESTEFANÍA TOMÁS 4º ESO1

By Amanda RodrĂguez Laguna 4ÂşESO1 I've chosen an intriguing, action and horror book that I read last year. The original tittle of the book is Red Riding Hood, who's afraid?, it is a new version of Little Red Riding Hood for teenagers. Catherine Hardwicke directed the film on this book after having received the script in 2009. It was written by David Leslie Johnson and Sarah Blakley- Cartwright. The original book is written in English but Julio Hermoso Oliveras translated it into Spanish. This book was published for the first time in Spain in March 2011 in Torrealguna, (Madrid) by the publishing house Santillana, but the publishing house in my book is Alfaguara. This book has 350 pages.

The most important characters in the story are: Valerie: is the main character in the story. Valerie is a beautiful and brave girl. She is bigger than her sister Lucie and must take care of her. Valerie has been in love with Peter since she was very young. Her parents want her to marry Henry, but she doesn't want to. She can talk with the wolf, so everybody says that she is a witch. Lucie: is the youngest in the family, she is in love with Henry, but no one knows that. Something terrible happens to her in the story. Suzette: Valerie' and Lucie's mother. When she was young she was in love with Adrian, Henry's father, but she was forced to marry Cesaire. Cesaire: Suzette's husband, is a woodcutter. Peter: He has known Valerie since they were kids. After a few years they met again, and he fights for her. Henry: a rich man whom Valerie must marry. The werewere-wolf: is one of the characters in the book. At night he becomes a wolf. He must choose someone to be the next were-wolf when he dies, and he chooses Valerie. I will tell you a bit about the story... The protagonist is Valerie, she lives in a small village, Daggorhorn with her sister Lucie and their parents Suzette and Cesaire. Their grandmother lives alone in the

forest. Lucie and Valerie like going to their grandmother´s home, and playing in the forest. When Valerie was a child she played with Peter, a boy that one day went away from the village and was never seen again, until he now came back. They have been in love since they were children, now Peter fights to be with her, but Valerie is forced to marry Henry. Everybody in the village lives scared because there is a were-wolf that attacks people and it kills two people during the story. The men wanted to kill it but the wolf is stronger than them. The wolf chases Valerie because it wants Valerie to be the next were-wolf. She can talk with it and everybody in the village says she is a witch. Guess who's the were-wolf. My favourite character is Peter because he fights to save Valerie from death and risks his life for her. He wants to live with Valerie and marry her. I like Valerie very much too, because she is always brave. I think that I have nothing in common with any characters because they live in another time, so they act in a different way. The book is too fantastical for me to feel or do anything similar to what the characters do and feel. I like this book a lot because every time the story is more surprising and I couldn't wait to know what happened on the next page. I was intrigued! My favourite part is when Peter and Valerie meet again, because this part is very romantic. My least favourite part is when the wolf kills the first person. I wouldn't change anything because the story is perfect, the ending is sad but beautiful, so I like it. I recommend this book to teenagers who like mystery, this book is really very beautiful. There is the film too, I saw it after reading the book, but the book is more interesting because the film doesn't have as meny scenes, and you can imagine the scenes and characters as you like with the book.

HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS A fiction book review Brief presentation of the book: The title of the book is “Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets”, there are seven books and it is the second book in the saga. Its author is the famous Joanne Kathleen Rowling. She was born on 31st July 1965, she is a British novelist and her books have become the best-selling book series in history, now J.K. Rowling is a millonaire. The publishing house is “Salamandra” and this publishing house published this book in October 1999 in Spain but this book was published before in others countries. This book has 288 pages and its genre is fantasy, thriller and mystery.

(The book)

(J.K. Rowling)

Points to Ponder: Brief summary: Harry Potter waits impatiently at home with his evil aunt and uncle to start the second year of Hogwarts School. A day an elf warns Harry that the School is in danger because someone has opened the chamber of secrets. Harry helped by his friends Ron and Hermione fight with enormous spiders, a basilisk and with the same reencarnation of Lord Voldemort.

The main characters are: Harry Potter: It is the main character of the book, he has dark hair, he wears glases and he has a scar on his forehead. He is a good magician and he is able to talk to snakes and he saves the School. Ronald: His friends call him Ron, he is the best friend of Harry ś. He is a clumsy magician and he is very cowardly but he always helps Harry. Hermione: She is a good friend of Harry, she is very beautiful and a good magician, she always helps Harry. Dumbledore: He is the headmaster of the School, he is an old man and he gives advice to Harry Potter to fight with Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort: He is the villain of the book, in this book he possesses the body of Ron's sister to do bad things.

The charactes aren’t believable because it is a fantasy book and in reality it can’t happen. The charaters have many problems, for example Ron could be eaten by a enormous spider, Hermione becomes a cat... My favourite character is Lord Vodemort because he is always terrorising the world, he has a lot of power and he can dominate to people and animals.

My personal experiences In the personality I identify with Ron because I am very lazy and distrutful and if I see enormous spiders they scare me a lot like Ron. But I also identify with Harry Potter because he helps to save to people and I like this. Obviously I haven’t felt like any character because magic doesn’t exist and everything that happens to them is connected to the magic but sometimes I felt that magic may exist.

My opinion I love all books about Harry Potter but Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets is my favourite. I like it because when I read these books I disconnected from the real world and I entered into a incredible world with magic, fantastic creatures and mysterious things. My favourite part of the book is when Harry Potter fights against the basilisk and is helped by the phoenix (a fire bird). Togueter they manage to overcome the basilisk and then Harry fights with Voldemort and saves Hogwarts School. I like all parts of the book but if I have to chose one that I don’t like it is when Ron and Harry go to see to spiders and then spiders want to eat them. I don’t like this part because I hate spiders. If I could change something in the book I would change the spiders for mice or grasshoppers. But in general de book is incredible.

My recommendation This is a perfectly good book and it is a book for all ages. I recommend this book and any Harry Potter book to people who want to disconnect from reality and people who like fantasy, thriller and mystery books. I also recommend this book to people who like magic.

Captain Nobody Brief Summary: -Title: Captain Nobody -Author: Jose Mª Carrasco -Publishing: Edebé -Place and edition's year: Barcelona 2008 -Number of pages:197 -Gender: Fiction and adventure

Points to Ponder: The story is about a young man (Paquito Castañedo) who works AT children's parties as a hero “Captain Nobody”. One day he captures a thief by chance and he becomes a “real” hero. He gets a very good reputation in Seville and he goes to TV interviews, openings and other events. He meets Susana Soto a journalist woman who is very pretty and interesting for Paquito. One advantage of his fame he decides to help a community which is near a factory which pollutes the local population. Paquito takes action by closing the dangerous factory but there will be more than one surprise along the way.

Main characters: All of them are credible except Captain Nobody, he is a human not a super-hero, in the book he has luck and looks like a hero but he isn't a real hero, and the things in which he seems like a hero aren't credible. Paquito Castañedo has the life of a famous person and helps an unhealthy community called “Vista Linda”. Jaime helps Paquito in his famous life because he is his representative. Federico and Salvador go with Paquito and help him with many things because they are their friends. Susana Soto is a journalist who works on TeleGiralda and she filmed Captain Nobody appearances, so in time Paquito and Susana fall in love. Alberto Urbano is the villain because he is an arrogant young man who is rich and he only thinks of himself. Paquito and his people must fight against dangerous people like Alberto Urbano or problematic teens as “Los Traca”. Paquito must be brave to fight with Alberto Urbano in order to help Vista Linda and he nearly gets shot. My favourite character is Jaime Ourensanz, because he is a man who helps Paquito. He could cheat him so as to get his money but he is honest and good and helps him in his famous type of life. I cannot relate to any of the characters in the story, but Paquito and me have some similarities in the physical apppearance for example( the brown eyes or the dark hair or the heigh) and other things because I'm a shy person too, but a sociable person when I feel confident. The book is interesting and I had a good time while I was reading it because I felt intrigued. My favourite part of the book is when Salvador and Paquito hit the stupid teens who tried to steal products from Salvador's shop and when Paquito saves Susana from a possible misfortune, helping her to escape a big rock falling on her when Paquito pushes her. If I could change something I would change the name of Captain Nobody because “Paquito” is a little ridiculous in my opinion; and also the ending, I want to know what happens between Susana and Paquito. I would recommend it to people who have a lot of free time because reading is a good way to spend your time when it's raining for example. Diego Rubio Mateo 4º ESO 1

FILM REVIEW FAST AND FURIOUS 5 The film that I´m going to review is called “Fast and Furious 5” and is directed by Justin Lin. The screenplay of this film is written by Chris Morgan and the music is made by Brian Tyler. This film had its premiere on 29th April 2011. The main actors are Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Elsa Pataky, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Tego Calderón, Don Omar, Joaquim de Almeida and more.

Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) free Dom (Vin Diesel) from prison. They go to Rio de Janeiro. There, they are hunted by a high-powered U.S. strike force, led by its toughest Fed (Dwayne Johnson) and an army of corrupt cops working for a ruthless drug kingpin. To gain their freedom and win this ultimate high-stakes race, they must pull off one last job, together with his team, made up of characters from the whole Fast and Furious saga - an insane heist worth $100 million. The main characters are: •

Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker): he is an expolice officer. He has short blond hair and blue eyes. Before he prosecuted Dom and now, he is his sister´s boyfriend, Mia Toretto.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel): he is a fugitive prosecuted by the police for many years. He is a brave and strong man who protects his sister.

Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster): she is a beautiful woman. She has long dark hair and brown eyes. She is Dom’s sister and O’Conner’s girlfriend.

The action takes place in Rio de Janeiro at real time and it is a chronological story. This film shows us a country like Brazil, dominated by a mafia society that manipulates anyone who crosses its path. The film´s genre is action and drama. I like this film because I like action films. I think that what the director wants to show is that with a good team, everything is possible. It is impossible to understand this film if you don’t watch it, so I recommend that you watch this film and its whole saga because you will love it. JESÚS JAVIER TALAVÁN

MY HOBBY

My hobby is horse riding. Since I was four years old I have loved riding horses with my brother Jacobo. He was the one who taught me how to steer the horse, how I had to use the reins so that the horse would follow me, how to put on the saddle ... He also gave me good tips on how to ride better. My father and my brother work on a farm with fighting cattle. There, my brother has many horses and when I have free time at the weekend I like going horse riding. I have always found interesting horse riding, because it is a way to relax and disconnect a little bit from everything. In the festival of my town I like to go horse riding with my friends and other riders because it is a tradition. I love riding because the horse can become a good friend and it is another way of doing sport. In addition, since I was very young I have liked watching bullfighting and bullfighting on horseback with a lance. My family environment is connected to the world of bullfighting and this has led to me having a great passion for horses and bulls.

CL ONING Is cloning good or bad? by Gema Parra In this century, cloning is being more and more used every day but, like everything nowadays, it’s a difficult topic to talk about because people have different opinions related to this. Some people are for, and others are against. Some people say that if we clone animals, we will increase the diseases that we had some years ago like ‘mad cow disease’, and also, scientists can use cloning to create some crops with special qualities that real ones don’t have, for example some extra vitamins, being able to be grown in some difficult areas, etc. However, it’s not a good idea to create human clones, because people can use it ‘to make’ their own children, choosing the type of the body parts that the children have, for example: blue eyes, fair hair, etc. So life wouldn’t be the same as what we know it to be. In conclusion, I think that cloning of plants and some animals can be a good idea because it can help humans benefit, like helping people in developing countries. But, I don’t believe that human cloning is a good idea, because it can be very dangerous and a little strange.

Is cloning good or bad? Cloning is the method whereby we can obtain identical copies of an (already developed) organism, cell or molecule already developed in an asexual way. I think that cloning is good when it is used to make animals. Cloning is an important progress in the scientific world. Thanks to these scientists can fight some diseases and make sure they aren’t passed on to future generations. Cloning is also used to obtain more resistant animals and vegetables, for example tomatoes resistant to cold or bigger fish. Moreover, we can make GM food, this is food genetically altered, it is good because we can eat two or more types of food on the same plate. However, cloning can be dangerous, for example if one of the fish that now are bigger escapes, it can kill off the typical fish or if one of the plants that now are more resistant causes a plague without control, it could be the end of the other plants, because the new organism is more resistant than the normal one. So cloning requires a lot of control, because if not, it could endanger the ecosystem. I think that GM food is dangerous because this food can contain a gene from other food which you are allergic to, so your health could be in danger. In conclusion, I think that cloning is good but, it needs a lot of care and attention.

WEBSITE REVIEW Wikipedia

Alberto Román 4ºESO1

One of my favourite websites is a free encyclopedia called Wikipedia. I have used it since I was 10 because my brother showed me it. I have used the Wikipedia to search for information about: famous people, places in the world, animals, sports… and then to do projects. Advantages: One advantage of Wikipedia is that you can search for information in every language of the world. Moreover, you can connect at any time. In addition, Wikipedia is very easy to use because you only have to Google it for whatever information and “Wikipedia” appears. Another advantage of Wikipedia is that it is free and it hasn’t got any advertising. Disadvantages: However, there are also many disadvantages and they are: Many people write false information and then when other persons search for this information it is wrong, but most of the time the information is true. Another disadvantage is that there are people who are addictive to this type of websites. And, finally, the last disadvantage is that bad comments can give a bad image to the business. Conclusion: Wikipedia is a good international free encyclopaedia and helps people to search for information about anything in any language. Opinion: In my opinion, the Wikipedia is the best encyclopaedia in the world because you can search for information about everything. However, I think that there are people that shouldn’t write information because that information is false.

CATWALK

In this photo the Queen of Spain, Sofía, is wearing a yellow jacket, with many pins, a thin red belt, a red skirt with a black sequined pattern and a pair of red pumps. On her right hand she has a red handbag and on her wrist she has a red watch and three bracelets. On her left hand she has a lot of bracelets, and a ring on her finger. Sofía’s wearing this because the colours symbolise the flag of Spain, and the photo was taken when she went to the Olympic Games in london 2012.

SMOKING SMOKING SHOULD BE ILLEGAL In the 21st century, it is known that smoking is bad, yet people still smoke. Young people smoke more and more and start at younger ages. This is a big problem for the health care system.

It is true that nicotine is bad, but quite incredibly, it is good for some diseases because it helps to keep it stable. These are very few diseases, but they are not uncommon.

Most doctors warn of the danger of tabacco for health, as it can cause lung cancer and mouth cancer, but still some people continue smoking, because they can't quit and others simply don't want to.

In conclusion, I think that smoking should be banned and laboratories should find a good solution to people stopping being addicted to nicotine.

GRAFITTI Banksy by Gema Parra Banksy is the name of one of the most famous street artists in the world. He makes his graffitti by using stencils. His favourite artist is Kate Kollwitz, because he thinks her style is really beautiful. He has made a film, which is considered by his friend Mr. Brainwash, to be like a cult movie. Banksy, which is also the brand of his pictures, is very annoyed because he considers that he has never vandalized anything and for some people, that’s what he does. He has given one of his pictures to charity, to prevent eye disease. He hasn’t got Facebook or Twitter. I think that Bansky is a good artist and that what he is doing is good, because he is showing his feelings with pictures and expressing his concerns. Apart from that, his pictures are very original and can make you smile when you see them or to think about them and what they’re trying to tell you.

MY OPINION ABOUT BANKSY WEBSITE I´m going to talk about graffiti art in general, very briefly. Then I want to consider Banksy’s answers to questions on his website. Some of his questions, however, are silly and pointless and these won´t be commented on. We can begin by saying that graffiti art is a life style and this is a motivation for many people who do it. Why graffiti artists do it and in this way? It can be for many reasons. For them, this is art, not a simple painting. They love painting and they want to decorate places with their beautiful graffiti. They also want to show their opinions or ideas through their art. It is a challenge for them and they cannot fail. Now, I want to consider Banksy’s website and his answers to the questions people asked him. Some of the answers that Banksy gives are vague and provocative. For example, he calls people “idiots” who are concerned about using stencils in their street art. The question about him being a “sell-out” is avoided. When asked about “Exit Through The Gift Shop” he only answers with one word, “Yes”. He considers street artist Robbo to be a good artist and he says he didn’t disrespect his work or have him beaten up. This tells us a lot about the kind of “street life” that these artists live in: very rough and at times dangerous. The street artist Blek le Rat is not “rated” by Banksy. He says he can’t “even draw”. Artist turned doctor, Käthe Kollwitz, is his favourite artist. To the question “Why are you so annoying?” he gets the answer “They make it up”. Again, this tells us about the life of a successful street artist who is a famous figure and, therefore, a target for the fictional stories of the popular press. Banksy does not seem to be a very nice person, at least on the evidence of his answers. He seems very arrogant. But his work makes people think and he helps brighten up dull buildings. In conclusion, I think that, for me, graffiti art is not an act of vandalism, I think that it is a life style for many people around the world. It is also a different view on art and on the world too. Many people like this art, but others say that “It is a crime”. I think that we cannot judge something that normally seems beautiful. I like this art and I also like Banksy’s graffiti. But what I don’t like about Banksy is his style, his way of life. For me, he seems very arrogant and very vain, and this makes many people hate him.

BANKSY Banksy is the nickname of a very famous street artist. He began to paint graffiti in the main streets of the UK and he criticizes things or ideas that he doesn´t like with his graffiti. His real name is Robert Gunningham. He is a young man of about 30 years old. He is tall, his skin is white and his hair is blonde. His works are satirical paintings about politics, morality, music, ethnicities… He has painted graffiti since 1992, he has got a very similar style to Blek le Rat (another graffiti artist). As far as I can see, people are divided, some of them think that his street art is vandalism because he shouldn´t paint graffiti on public walls or on private spaces, except if he has the owners´ permission. Other people think that he is a good artist because his art is original and close to everyone. Everybody can see his graffiti on the street and give their opinion about it. In my opinion, he is an artist, as good as or even better than other classical artists. He is original and the most important thing for me is that everyone can see and understand his graffiti. You don´t need to be an art critic to evaluate one of his works. However, I think that he shouldn’t paint his graffiti wherever he wants, he should have the owners´ permission. For example, I don´t mind if he paints the public walls in my town, because his art is very funny and original. If he were a beginner or a person who can only paint his name on a wall, I wouldn´t like his art, but he is an experienced graffiti artist and I think that a wall with a graffiti is funnier than a simple grey wall. Walls with graffiti are funnier and more cheerful than simple walls. This is my opinion, but if another person thinks that it is vandalism, no one should paint on someone else’s property without consent.

HOW MANY SUBJECTS ? Teenagers should study fewer subjects . Here in Spain, teenagers have to study at least ten or eleven subjects at secondary schools, and if you fail two of them, you have to repeat the year again. However, people have different ideas about the number of subject that we should study. On the one hand, people are for the number of subject that teenagers have. They think that if we have a lot of subjects we are going to know more about general culture and we are going to be better prepared than others. They think that knowing more things about different subjects, it can also help us to find a job or something similar. On the other hand, there are many people (teenagers included) who think that they have too many subjects and it confuses us about the things that we learn. Moreover, there are subjects that are very similar and if it there were only one subject of this kind, it would be easier to remember the contents. In conclusion, I think that if teenagers had fewer subjects, it would be easier to study than with many subjects which are similar and don’t provide us with anything new about general culture.

UNITED WORLD COLLEGES UNITED WORLD COLLEGES The UWC is a series of schools created to provide a challenging and transformative educational experience with a diversity of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future. All over the world there are 13 colleges, to which about 80 to 100 students of different nationalities come every year. All students who attend are scholarship students in their countries of origin, with a scholarship valued at 45,000 euros. Here in Spain around 10 scholarships are given out. To get one of them you must pass a series of stages. The first, called Preselection is to complete a form answering a few questions and write an essay on any subject with a maximum of 300 words. The second, called Selection is to be a weekend in Madrid performing a series of activities and living with teenagers from all over Spain. And the third, called Final Step is to have a personal interview with a committee member of the UWC. The educational method taught in these schools is the International Baccalaureate (IB) , in which apart from having your different subjects, you must participate in voluntary activities and social projects. G.M.FOOD

GM FOOD

BY GEMA PARRA

In the 21st Century, the GM (Genetically modified) food is more and more used by factories to make their products ‘better’ and longer lasting. But there are some different opinions related to this. On the one hand, some people think that GM food can help developing countries because factories can make some crops with special qualities to survive in poor areas or in areas with bad weather. Moreover, the food that scientists produce is edible for a longer time and it’s cheaper to sell them in supermarkets. Apart from these reasons, the seeds can be modified and they can be resistant to pests. But, on the other hand, when you eat GM food you don’t know which qualities they’ve got and you can poison yourself. Moreover, farmers who cultivate GM food have to pay the factories to make them GM crops. In conclusion, I think that GM food can be good to help developing countries and to produce food in a faster and cheaper way, but we have to know that we can’t be sure which ‘food’ we’re eating and if it can be dangerous for our health.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD Genetically Modified food is the result of scientists´ work, they have produced new kinds of food/crops, which produce a bigger harvest, are resistant to diseases and water shortage and help them to stay fresh for longer. GM food, however, is not a new thing. For thousands of years man has been engineering food crops and farm animals. Now, scientists are doing the same thing but in a much shorter time and at a genetic level. There are both good and bad arguments for and against GM food which I will discuss below: The case for GM food is quite strong. Scientists are able to manipulate food genes to make fresh food last longer. Food can also be made to taste better, making it more enjoyable to eat. Therefore, less food will be wasted and food can stay in the supermarkets for longer. Manipulating genes can also produce crops such as wheat, barley, maize and rice that are drought resistant, which means they don’t need as much water as traditional varieties. This is good news for countries where there is very little water but which have large populations to feed. In addition, these same countries will benefit from crops genetically modified to resist diseases, so they produce more food. Moreover, GM crops have the potential to make farming more productive, helping to feed the world. However, the case against GM food is also strong. All food has been modified by man for thousands of years. Now, scientists modify food in a short period of time by manipulating it at a genetic level and that is the problem. What could the consequences be? It might not be safe. If GM food is created in a short period of time, scientists won’t have time to test it and know if it is safe or not. We don’t know if GM food is safe for human consumption. In the short term, there may not be a problem, but who is able to know what might happen to future generations? Genetic problems in humans in one hundred years may be the result of genetic manipulation today. The world of insects and animals, may also be affected by GM crops with serious results for the whole planet. In conclusion, I think that manipulating food to create GM food could be a good idea. To have longer lasting food, to prevent famine, to waste less water..., but we must think of the possible serious consequences of not testing properly in the near future, not only for our society, but for the whole world and that is the real problem.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD In the 20th century, GM food appeared for the first time as a plant. Some scientists introduced a gene into a genome of a bacterium. Now people have different opinions about GM food, some of them are for and others are against. Some people think that GM food is an opportunity for the present world, and they give some reasons for , as GM food is able to help people who are dying of famine. Another reason that these people argue is that this food can look good and have better taste. Furthermore, this GM food can be cultivated in dry places, and that is an advantage for the years in which there is a drought. Anyway, there are people who think just the opposite. They think that GM food is dangerous for our world, because it destroys the planet. GM food might not be safe because we could lose genetic diversity. If we continue making GM food, we will destroy the existing plants. Moreover, this food could be toxic for the environment. In conclusion, I think that GM food could be good for people who are allergic to some food, in spite of it, it could destroy our planet.

EXCHANGES EXCHANGE WITH CHICAGO Last March, students from Woodstock (Illinois) came to Navalmoral. They stayed in our houses and were very friendly. Sophie stayed at my house: she was very nice and loved speaking Spanish. They arrived on Saturday and Patricia, Maria and me went to have dinner with Jenny, Shannon and Sophie. We talked to them. They said that Chicago and Navalmoral were very different. They said that Navalmoral is more classical. Jenny did not like Spanish food and she had a hamburger, but Sophie loved Spanish food and she ate cheese, ham, meat… On Sunday we had a picnic with our families and some teachers. On Monday we went to school. We had a science lesson and Rubén talked to us about Monfragüe. On Tuesday we went to Monfragüe and Plasencia. We had a great time with the American people. They loved the natural park. On Wednesday we went to Cáceres, Los Barruecos and Trujillo. Susana, Andrew, Noah, Juanma and Johny were missing for a while. When we came back to Navalmoral we went to El Jardincillo with Carlos, Lucas, Abel, Natalia, Patricia and Maria. We had a great time. Thursday was the last day, we were really sad and they were sad too. Our farewell was: “Next year we´ll come to Woodstock to visit you!”

EXCHANGE TRIPS IN 4ºESO We went on a trip to Cáceres with the students of I.E.S. Universidad Laboral from Cáceres and I.E.S. Jálama from Moraleja. We saw the main square in Cáceres , we could see the city hall and the main buildings in the historical town.We went on a guided tour about the history of Cáceres. After that, we had to fill in a questionnaire. While some were on the tour other were at the film library watching two documentaries in English .In my opinion, the trip was wonderful as I met a lot of new people and I made a lot of friends. I really enjoyed the breakfast that we had at I.E.S. Universidad Laboral. On the next trip we went to el Trabuqete in Guijo de Sta. Bárbara. First, we had a gymkhana about the main things in town. I finished first, because I knew the answers and a little bit about the town. Then, we walked around the town before we started the walk to Trabuquete, which is a river with a lot of rocks. I really enjoyed this route, because it was perfect. I saw a lot of birds and I learned many things about the aream. In my opinion, this trip was fantastic. I enjoyed all the day the whole day.

THE EXCHANGES WITH TRUJILLO

In May we did two exchanges with I.E.S. Francisco de Orellana from Trujillo. First , they came to Navalmoral and we did an adventure trial and a musical instruments workshop in English, after starting the day with a great breakfast at the school canteen. When we went to Trujillo we had a presentation activity and later we went to the main square and, there, we had a treasure hunt in the old part of the city. We visited the castle, the churches‌ Both experiences were fun and we made friends with students from Trujillo.

OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT MY YEAR AT ZURBARà N Hey everyone, it’s Mike, your language assistant for this past year. This year has been a lot of fun, not only because I have had the opportunity to make the most of the Spanish weather and see lots of Spain but also because I got to work at this great school. I remember when I first came in and met the teachers, not understanding much and thinking that it was going to be a daunting experience. Then to have my first class with 3rd ESO, I thought it was going to be difficult but I could not have been more wrong. Although every Monday with 3rd ESO was difficult, I still had a lot of fun with them. When I think back on my time with most of the groups, I think we had fun, well as much as we could give the work we had to do. Every class was different as was every student and there was always a good mixture of personalities which it made it entertaining to teach you all. But it was very much different experience to interact with student from 12 year olds, just out of primary school, to 18 year olds, a few years younger than myself. However that was just part of this great experience. I have been able to travel around a lot of Spain, see lots of interesting things, eat lots of Tortilla de patatas, enjoy lots of fiesta and carnavales and many more things. I have learnt a lot this year and been able to practice my Spanish which has been really good. I have also met a lot of great people, many of whom work at school and I hope will remain good friends. It has been wonderful and amazing to be part of the Zurbaran family and you all made me feel so welcome, I hope I will be able to come back and see you all soon. Thank you! Un beso y un abrazo,

Mike Pink

THE BILINGUAL EXPERIENCE MY EXPERIENCE IN THE BILINGUAL SECTION I remember the first time that I came to this secondary school. I remember the day when I did the exam to get into the bilingual section: I was nervous and excited. The first day of class in this school was the best, because I met my classmates. I got on with all my classmates and now they are my best friends. The teachers have changed and I have spent a lot of time working and doing homework. Choosing to enter the bilingual section is the best decision that I have ever made, because you learn many things. Thanks to the bilingual section I have learnt a lot of English and things about life. Along these four years, I have improved my pronunciation and my way of thinking. I have always had the same teacher in the bilingual section. She is a very good teacher, but a little strict. In spite of being a strict teacher, I have learnt a lot with her and I have got very good results. So maybe a strict teacher is better for your English...Furthermore, I have met the best classmates in the world. They helped me when I had doubts. Some partners have failed in previous years, but I see them in the corridors and sometimes we chat. But the worst thing in the bilingual section is the seventh period on Wednesdays, when we stay at school until twenty past three. But despite that we have had a great time. The bilingual section has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that you learn a lot of English and you meet foreign people and even people from other towns. The disadvantages are that you have subjects in English like Maths, P.E. and Music, but that way you learn even more English. The bilingual section is the best thing that you can choose, because you learn plenty of English and things about life through the European Portfolio of languages, which can help you to have success in the future. It can also help you to find a job.

MY FIRST YEAR IN THE BILINGUAL SECTION I´m really happy of being in the bilingual section at I.E.S. Zurbarán. I´m glad because I´m learning many different things. At first, being in the bilingual section is a bit hard until you get used to it, as here you have a higher level compared to the standards of other groups in the school. In my class we all work very hard and it is easy to get used to the level of the group because we help each other.I´m very at ease with the classmates, so I hope we are together for a long time… THE BILINBUAL SECTION IS HARD BUT IT IS WORTH IT!!
