LA CHIQUITA CAVE STORIES

A long, long time ago, there was a goat herder in Cañamero called Álvarez. One day, he was grazing with his herd of goats when he saw a little creature on the river bank, by the Ruecas canyon, not far from the Otter´s Pool. At first, he thought that it was a water snake, but he took it and he discovered that it was a small lizard. He called it Chiquita and put it in a nearby cave. Every day he would come to feed it with goat´s milk and play with it, so they became very close friends. After a while, the Lord of the region started a war and Álvarez was asked to join the army, so he said good bye to Chiquita and left the town. Several years later, when the war was over and Álvarez could come back to Cañamero, the first thing he did, after visiting his family, was take some goat milk and go to the Chiquita Cave to visit Chiquita. He came into the cave, called Chiquita and saw a big , man-eating dragon which killed him.

Chiquita did not kill him, it was her father. When Chiquita went outside the cave, she saw her father and her friend Álvarez dead. When the police arrived at the cave they saw Álvarez on the ground. They called an ambulance and took him to hospital. Álvarez was in a bedroom when suddenly, he began to open his eyes and look around at the people who were in the room. Everybody was amazed. Álvarez began to speak and smile. Álvarez had not died! The police returned to the cave and they caught Chiquita´s father. When Álvarez was better, he went to the cave and he felt happy when he was with Chiquita.

LUNA DÍAZ

When the dragon killed the man, he remembered who the man was and why he was living now. The man was the owner of the dragon, and this man had cared about the dragon when it was only a small lizard and the man thought that it was a little snake. When the dragon remembered who the man was, he was sorry to have killed his owner and started crying. The dragon thought that if he committed suicide, he would not suffer. The dragon was up all-night thinking of his idea and the next morning, the dragon was found dead next to his owner with its hands stained with blood.

Everybody thinks that Álvarez had died after returning from the war, but the story is different. This is what happened: When Álvarez returned from the war he went to tell his adventures to his friend Chiquita. Apart from heroism and fighting, there was also love… Her name was Leila Williams, a girl with black hair and brown eyes who always had a disoriented face. He missed her and for a moment, he wished they could be together again. Chiquita's skin lit up, revealing a hidden power with which two wishes were granted to anyone who asked. The first wish Álvarez asked for was to live in the biggest and most powerful castle and the second was to be able to form a family with Leila. A short time later, Álvarez was living in Bermúdez’s castle, a city that Leila had recently visited. Everything was going smoothly, they had the perfect family with a beautiful daughter named Phoebe, but Álvarez did not know what he was doing. One day, while exploring his new home, he discovered a lagoon where three witches lived. These witches granted wishes, but for a price: if you wanted a wish, you had to kill a loved one. Álvarez thought it was not necessary, but a few years later he did not think the same... Bermúdez was going through a serious economic crisis that Álvarez tried to solve, but he was blinded by ambition and it made him give his beloved Leila to the witches. The problem was solved when he remarried, but he did not love his new wife, not like Leila. Years later, on Phoebe´s sixteenth birthday, Álvarez realized that even though he had a lot of money, power and women, he always wanted more. So, he told his daughter that he was going to show her a family heirloom, but instead he took her to the witches' cave and murdered her in exchange for more power. After killing his daughter and wife, Álvarez lived with remorse for the rest of his days, because he was not able to love anyone else due to the smear in his soul and he was given the punishment of dying alone.

Álvarez had a son. When his father didn't come home he went to look for him. He didn't find his father, but he found a little blue egg in a cave. He cared for it until it was born. The blue egg hatched a beautiful snake: its skin shone like a diamond and its eyes were purple. He named the snake Zafiro. He didn't know that his father was dead, so he spent all his time with the snake. They were very good friends. The snake grew up and scared the other kids, so he was the only one that played with him. When the two became adults, they went to live together in a house in the mountains.

The dragon killed Álvarez because, after not having seen him in a long time, he thought it was a giant worm, now that he had gotten bigger. Not to be eaten by his little Chiquita, Álvarez took his dagger and stuck it in the belly of the animal, making a slit to get out of his stomach. The poor dragon writhed in pain and Álvarez got out of its belly. Seeing how his little Chiquita died, he could not stand the pain and he took his dagger and stuck it in his stomach. Thus, the two died in terrible confusion.

When Álvarez came into the cave he realized that there were a lot of little bones. He started feeling nervous because he thought that an animal had eaten Chiquita. Álvarez walked all through the cave searching for the lizard. He was going to give up when he heard a strange sound coming from a big hole near the exit. He looked into the hole, it was shining! He got really scared, but after a couple of minutes he decided to climb down the hole. As soon as he stepped on the floor a huge creature caught him. When Alvarez saw the creature, he noticed that it was a dragon, but it wasn't a normal dragon. It was Chiquita. Chiquita saw him and, confused, she dropped him on the floor. The herder was calm but suddenly another dragon held him. He was almost going to be eaten by the dragon when he heard Chiquita saying “Mom, no, please”. One second later he was in the stomach of Chiquita´s mom.

The dragon was looking for his daughter for a long time, until one day he went to the cave and saw Chiquita wounded. Quickly the dragon took refuge with her. Then he thought that Álvarez was the one who had hurt her. A few days later, Chiquita died. The dragon decided to take revenge. He spent several years wandering around the cave to find Álvarez. When the shepherd came to the cave he saw a dragon. The dragon killed him, because he thought that the shepherd had killed his daughter, the snake Chiquita. In fact, the one who had killed Chiquita was the shepherd’s wife, since her husband spent more time with the snake than with her. Several days later, Álvarez's wife was worried because she did not know where her husband was. She went to see if he was in the cave, but when she arrived she saw her husband's clothes and several objects belonging to him at the entrance of the cave. She went into the cave, found his corpse and she decided to commit suicide, drowning herself in the river Ruecas.

When Álvarez returned to the cave, he found a huge dragon and, believing that it was Chiquita he called to her with the same tone and affection as always, but it turned out that it was not Chiquita and the dragon ate Álvarez. The dragon was Chiquita´s father and he was jealous of Álvarez, since he saw that the little girl spent more time with him and had more love for him, so he ate HIM.

MARIO ROMERO

The dragon killed Alvarez without compassion. The dragon killed the shepherd because he was becoming a close friend of Chiquita and the dragon didn’t want that. The dragon wanted to be Chiquita´s best friend, but she wanted to be Álvarez´s best friend. The dragon thought that if he killed Álvarez he could be Chiquita´s best friend. After the dragon had killed Álvarez, he asked Chiquita if she wanted to be his best friend, but Chiquita had a new best friend. The dragon wanted to kill him with a trap, but Chiquita´s new friend avoided the trap and the dragon died.

When the dragon killed the shepherd, he went to the nearest town to kill all the cattle of the villagers. The people of the village, realizing that the dragon had killed their cattle, went to the cave to get revenge for the damage caused by the animal. When the villagers arrived, the dragon was not there, because it had gone to live somewhere else. The following year, a hunter saw it and chased it until he lost track of it. The hunter called the villagers, who started looking for it again, until they found it and put it in a cage and threw it down the river Ruecas, so as not to have problems with it again.

Then, the dragon observed the body and recognised Álvarez, and the dragon started to cry, and it began to shrink. His tears revived the body and Álvarez killed the dragon because before the dragon had tried to kill Alvarez without a reason. Then, Álvarez went to his home crying, because he had just killed a friend, an old friend. When he went back to the cave, he looked at the body of the dragon and he tried to bring it to life again. A group of dragons attacked him, and he started to run for his life. Finally, the dragons ate the dead body of the dragon and Álvarez didn´t go to this cave again for the rest of his life.

Later, Alvarez was very scared. He wanted to go out and he needed help but there wasn’t any one. Alvarez started to run very fast and he fell into the river. The monster found the boy. It locked him in the cave. Some people went to visit the cave. Every day the monster kidnapped one person. Then, a group of students saw all the people there and they called the police. They were trying to fight the monster, but it was invisible. The monster never came back to the cave. Some people created a legend about it and the people think that it is true. They visit the Chiquita cave once a week because they want to see the monster .
