THE TABLE OF THE WITCHES IN CAÑAMERO A long, long time ago in Chalcolithic times (the Copper Age), the witches in Las Villuercas built a table as a place to gather their coven every full moon. The witches would start at the Old Square and go to the Escarihuelas, following the way up to the top of the hill near the castle, facing the Gorge of the river Ruecas. They would all bring their pumpkins and put them on the table for the full moon to bless them and give them magic powers. This meant that all the potions they put inside the pumpkins would get magic powers too. After that, they would drink their special concoctions, dance and go into a trance. Start your own story, beginning with: It was full moon again that night…

It was full moon again that night and all the witches were around the fire. They were arguing about the “citizens hunt” and thinking about how to kill them. The witches were very ugly. They had big noses, long dark hair and they were very tall and thin. The next morning they decided to go to the village on their brooms and they arrived to a river near the village. The witches waited for the nightfall, because they wanted to attack when the citizens were sleeping. When the nightfall came and all the village was in silence, they decided to attack but when they got in all the houses they realized that the citizens weren’t at the village. The witches looked in the village square and they become aware that all the citizens had been killed by other witches. When they got face to face with the other witches they realized that they were like them and they became friends. Lucía Alonso

It was full moon again that night. The witches met one more night to prepare their plans. Avería was the wisest witch in the coven, Rosalía and Petra were younger witches and they were apprentices of Avería. All of

them came from a magical and special town. That town was called Cañamero. That night they met to make a potion to save Avería from death. She had a curse, if the light of the sun touched her, she would die. To make the potion they needed three frog eyes, two bat wings and enchanted water from the river Ruecas. Rosalía was responsible for the frog eyes from the reservoir of Rivera del Fresno. Petra looked for bat wings in the Chiquita Cave. The most difficult ingredient to find was the enchanted water, they had to catch the water in the natural pool Pond of the Trout in the River Ruecas. Avería’s brother was sent to catch the water with a bucket. Three nights later they all met to make the potion. They made fire and they mixed everything in a cauldron , in ten minutes the sky was filled with magical lights. From the darkness, a man with a cloak appeared and threw the potion to the ground, but Petra knew a magical spell to recover it. Avería took the brew and she got healed from the curse. The coven caught the man in the cloak and they locked him in the dungeons of Cañamero Castle. The lived quietly and without danger for many years. Jairo Díaz

It was full moon again that night. It was very foggy and it was very very cold. All the villagers were at home. All except some “women”. In fact, they were five witches, one for each side of the Satan’s pentagon that was drawn on the floor. Suddenly, two girls joined the group, they were twins, they were twelve years old and this night they would turn thirteen, the age to become a witch. In order to be a witch they had to pass a test. The test consisted of making a potion, and if they did it right, they would definitely enter the coven. The potion was difficult to prepare and if they did it wrong they could die in the attempt. Most of the ingredients were kind of easy to find, they were: an eye of a toad, dew from the field, a tentacle of an octopus, an orchid from Almaraz and last, but not least, the heart of a witch… This was the only way to make sure that the knowledge of one generation would pass on to the next. The old witches knew that by the end of the night one of them would no longer be there. It was a tradition, but that didn’t make it any easier. And it wasn’t easy for the twins either. The twins were mixing the ingredients cautiously, one at a time, checking and rechecking every step. They were taking longer than they should, because they didn’t want to get to the last step; but finally, there was nothing left to do except taking the heart of one of the witches.

They looked at the witches, they looked at each other and they knew what they had to do it. They drank the potion as it was. It tasted bitter and it burned their mouths and throats. Suddenly, they felt dizzy and fell onto the ground. The old witches used all their powers to save themselves and when they finally woke up, they realized that their aura was different. In fact, they were no longer girls but they weren’t witches either. Or not the usual kind of witch at least. Their clothes were white, their skin was shiny and their eyes were golden. They were white magic witches. They were exiled from the tribe, so they decided to live in a village where they found their own clan. The only thing to realise they were not mere humans was their golden eyes and if you look closely to the mountain every full moon you will find them gathering around a bonfire. Myriam Fernåndez

It was full moon again that night in Chalcolithic Times, in Villuercas where there was a mysterious witch. She was called Margarita. All the village were scared by her and she was very angry. She was thirsty of revenge, so she decided to make a special concoction to punish the villagers. She went to the countryside to catch insects and special plants. With much patience, she caught fifty special insects. Margarita went to get a rockrose, because these plants were magical. She also caught leaves of prunus lusitanica, because these were magical too. And finally, she caught many flowers: ten different types of flowers. With all the ingredients, Margarita went to the top of the nearest mountain. Nobody could see her, so she chose that place. The witch made a fire and put a cauldron on the fire. She threw the insects, and then the magical plants. While she was stirring the potion, she started to recite some magical spells. The potion was finished. Margarita drank the magic potion and five minutes later she disappear. She was reflected in the full moon and at midnight, Villuercas disappeared. Elena GarcĂa

It was full moon again that night and all the witches came to the town. They were very excited because they had never done that magic. It was black magic, and it was very difficult. Clarise, the oldest and best witch doing spells, came closer to the magic table, and she started pronouncing the spell (there was a dead dog on the table)”Oh dear dog, revive, revive right now!” And the dead dog started to move. The dog stood up, and… he started to dance! Clarise, received excited a clapping from the other witches. All the witches made a very big and funny party. But they didn’t remember that the dog only was to be alive until 00.00. At 00.00, the dog began to fall asleep again. All the witches said goodbye to him and returned to their houses. The party had been incredible! Sabina Verdasco

It was full moon again that night and an old witch named Catalina went out to find the last ingredient that was missing for her potion. That same night there was a meeting of all the witches to discuss issues such as the citizens from the town, who were very dangerous. Catalina was not afraid to go alone, so she went to the town because the ingredient was by the doors of the castle: it was a small plant that grew only there. The witches were all reunited but only the boss was missing. They waited more than two hours, but Catalina did not show up, so they went to look for her at home. In her house there was only her black cat and as he was able to speak thanks to a spell, they asked him where Catalina was. He told them that she had gone to the castle and had to cross the town. The scared witches went looking for her. Entering the town stealthily, one of the witches called Josefa, was so scared to see a dog asleep that she started to run. The dog noticed it and began to bark and all the citizens, alerted, left their houses and chased her to the castle. Catalina, already at the gates of the castle, was arrested by a guard in front of the other witches. They decided to go away and never go out again and nobody knew anything else about Catalina. The legend says that every full moon night a spirit, imbued by all the witches, goes out to visit all the citizens of CaĂąamero. Celia Carrasco
