Issue 14

Welcome to the No.8 Tours VIP Members Travel Club A Personal Note Hello to all No.8 Tours VIP Members and a warm welcome to all those recently joined members. Issue 14 has been a labour of love and we are excited to finally have it in your hands. Thank-you to all our VIP Club Members for your continued support, each year we like to formally thank our loyal supporters like you, and we couldn’t be more grateful, your participation has allowed us to improve the existing tours and launch a few new exciting adventures. In summary 2018-19 has been a big year, thank you to you all. We have completed 85 trips in this time and have experienced incredible growth in the VIP Membership, over 30% growth in registrations. As a result of this growth and the club's strength in numbers, we are gaining traction with our suppliers. No longer is your travel club viewed as a small ‘ma and pa’ hobby business, but a significant player in the senior travel industry. We are now able to access better rates and terms from these premium suppliers. As a VIP Member, you will continue to see the quality of accommodation and meal options regularly reviewed and if need be changed. Your valued reviews of each tour via the feedback forms has proved to be a valuable tool for No.8 Tours. As a result, several accommodation providers have lost our trade for the following year an opportunity now awaits the incumbent. In planning the new catalogue, the team was chartered with the task of increasing quality but not at the cost of increasing prices. I think the team has done an excellent job in this regard and I am pleased to say that the pricing in Issue 14 is either the same, reduced or where a price increase has been Incurred you will find it minimal. If this is the first catalogue you have received, we hope you find some exciting trips and new destinations to visit over the next twelve months, what a great way to grow your circle of friends and share experiences. Isolation or feeling lonely can be fleeting, or for some, it can be a longer-term emotion. We think the travel club can play a small part in fighting loneliness. Through each of us promoting travel and outings, we are helping people make new connections and providing a platform to reengage, have fun and enjoy life again. When you share your catalogue with people, you never know what impact and a new lease of life you may give someone. Thank-you once again, to all of you who continuously support us on our journey, we appreciate your loyalty, compassion, zest for life, fun and sense of adventure and we look forward to sharing time in some beautiful locations together. Please find a couple of complimentary travel vouchers enclosed as a gesture of thanks from us all here at No.8 Tours - New Zealand’s Senior Travel Club. With love and good wishes from the No.8 Tours Team.

Andy, Sarah, Gretchen, Keith, Frans & Alberto Issue 14 Where is Issue 13, you ask? Well we had to ‘perculate’ over this one for quite some time. With the number 13 having bad luck connotations for some we just decided to skip it, job done.

CANCEL FOR ANY REASON (Any reason at all)

In deciding whether to travel or not, personal circumstances need careful contemplation, and for No.8 Tours Senior Travel Club Members, they are often health-related. Cancellation is a real possibility causing a degree of anxiety. Some folks worry right up to the day they travel; others may prefer to delay or not book at all in fear of losing money as a consequence of cancelling. No.8 Tours has been seeking a solution to this problem for some time now. At last, we are super excited to announce that we can offer affordable protection of your investment. No.8 Tours in partnership with Cover-More NZ can offer a peace of mind Cancellation Insurance, designed specifically for the senior traveller in mind. This allows you to cancel your trip, ’For Any Reason At All’ and claim your prepaid, non-refundable costs back.

When customers add and pay for Cancel for Any Reason cover, if they need or want to CANCEL THEIR TRIP FOR ANY REASON, they won’t need to worry about the claim being excluded*. There are some rules around when they will need to buy their policy/book their trip/or make further travel bookings which are explained below.

• Customer must buy the policy within 48-hours of initial deposit/payment of the trip. • Cancellation Cover with Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) package, must be paid for at the same time as purchasing the policy. • Must cancel the whole journey at least 7 days before the scheduled departure date. • Can only claim 75% of their cancellation cover purchased to a max of $10,000 per policy. Notting Hill of Tirau and The Red Barn Wedding Venue TOUR CODE: ND-REDB

Thursday 19th November Today we’re off to explore the corrugated-iron renaissance town of Tirau and south Waikato. A long established farming service hub, 20 years ago Tirau began reinventing itself from a 'drive through' to a 'drive to' town. We’ll start with a delicious morning tea under the giant orange teapot at Heidi’s on the Hill. Our next port of call is to hear an interesting talk and explore the classically sophisticated Notting Hill Interiors. This iconic design mecca has been serving its customers since 2004 and is the favourite destination for many who make regular pilgrimages to be inspired by the stylish homewares within. They have a great story, and our hosts will be sharing this insight into how they have become such a successful business and staying ahead of the pack. After a browse of the shops, we board the coach and continue to our lunch at The Red Barn, Hinuera. One of the unique venues in the Waikato the converted turn-of-the-century livery stables are set in lovely grounds. With views to savour and food to match, the day concludes having satisfied three of our favourite subjects: great people, delicious food and beautiful scenery.

November - December 2019 Charming Chatham Islands TOUR CODE: SO-CHATM

Thursday 28th November DAY ONE Flying to New Zealand’s easternmost outpost, Chatham Islands will be via the Auckland airport. Our Air Chathams flight will touch down on the island late afternoon. As we descend, you’ll be struck by the rich diversity of scenery below, with rolling farmlands, white sandy beaches, volcanic peaks and dramatic rocky outcrops. The Chatham Islands consist of two main inhabited islands, Chatham Island (90,000 ha) and Pitt Island (6,300ha) surrounded by smaller islands. We disembark and head to the Hotel Chatham to check in. Built in the 1860s on the waterfront at Waitangi our accommodation has a delightful vintage charm with all the facilities of a modern hotel. Here we’ll be treated to a sumptuous seafood buffet tonight with fresh bounty such as crayfish, grouper and blue cod, harvested from the seas surrounding the islands.

Friday 29th November DAY TWO After breakfast we head west to Splatter Rock to take in the spectacular pillow lava-flow formations and marvel at the layered olivine basalt cliffs of Cape Young. This location is an opportunity for plant enthusiasts to view the famously huge Chatham Island forgetme-nots, thriving just above the high tide mark. We will be stopping for a picnic lunch and visiting Helen who is our host at her historic Maunganui sandstone cottage nestled in a flourishing garden. Built for missionaries between 1866-1868 it’s full of historical artefacts and old photographs each with a story to tell. After lunch we head to Waitangi West - home to the Chatham Island Oyster Catchers – travelling through a diverse landscape of coastal sand dunes, past lakes and spectacular views of large sand blow outs and remnant kopi stands. Dinner tonight is at the hotel.

Saturday 30th November DAY THREE Some may opt to head out on a fishing charter from the settlement of Owenga but for the rest, the day centres around land-based activities. After breakfast we head to the Kopinga Marae. Built for its panoramic views of the islands and opened in 2005 it pays tribute

to the Chathams Moriori ancestors. A fish factory tour at Owenga is scheduled this morning – our deeper dive into the island’s primary industry. Amazing views are all around us at our next stop at Rangaiki Cliffs and Shelley Beach where we’ll find a pretty spot to have a picnic lunch. While we are in the neighbourhood, we’ll drop in to visit Eva Cherie Tuck. Her art gallery displays an array of colourful artworks depicting the diversity of flora and fauna of the local landscape. As we set out for the journey back to the hotel, we’ll stop to pay our respects to Tommy Solomon who died in 1933. His commemorative statue marks his place in history as the last full-blooded Moriori – the indigenous people of the islands.

Sunday 1st December DAY FOUR Bird-watching is on the agenda this morning as we head to the south coast after breakfast to visit the Albatross colony breeding programme set up by Taiko Trust at a protected site at Point Gap. We then move on to visit a local farm to learn more of the special challenges farming on New Zealand’s remotest islands. We’ll head back to a fish and chip lunch at the hotel before a visit to the museum where ancient and modern history of the islands is on show. A walk up Tikitiki hill and around the town will be a good way to get your bearings, take photos and enjoy the fresh air before dinner tonight at the hotel.

Monday 2nd December DAY FIVE Don your hiking shoes as we are off after breakfast to explore the peaceful track of the Nikau Bush Conservation area. 19 hectares of regenerating forest are home to the native Nikau palm – usually in full bloom at this time of year. Following this, we stop at DOC’s Ocean Mail Reserve where we will have a picnic lunch and enjoy fantastic ocean views and seabirds. Onwards then to Muirson’s Farm to see a Sunderland flying boat restoration project. The Point Munning fur seal colony is our next stopover – over 200 years ago the processing of their skins and oil was a thriving industry in the Chathams. Still regarded as a sacred treasure by the Moriori, the incredibly rare tree carvings at Hapupu are set to be a highlight of our entire stay. We stop here as our final activity for the day. Tonight’s dinner is the famous seafood buffet dinner at the Kaingaroa Sports and Social Club.

Saturday 18th April DAY THREE Just after midnight on 14 November 2016, most of central New Zealand woke following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake 60km south west of the coastal town of Kaikōura. Generating the strongest ground acceleration ever recorded in New Zealand and caused widespread damage throughout the districts of Hurunui, Marlborough and Kaikōura. With close to a million cubic metres of rock and material falling onto the coastal transport corridor, Kaikōura and the surrounding rural communities were isolated - all roads and the rail network in and out of the area were damaged and closed by the slips. This major event disrupted the lives of many: homes were damaged, businesses were closed, farms left with damaged land and no access to markets for their goods, and communities devastated by the loss of trade from passing traffic and tourists. Today we will be joined on the bus by local resident and business owner Ben Judge who will explain first hand events of that day he will point out major geological changes and provide an insight into living post-quake around the region. Along the way we will stop for lunch and return midafternoon to our accommodation.

Sunday 19th April DAY FOUR We have an exciting day in store, we will be armed with sonar rather than the cold steel harpoon of centuries gone by. Kaikoura's whale watching is one of New Zealand's deservedly famous attractions. Whale Watch is the original guided cruise company to take trips out along the Kaikoura coast and view these magnificent whales and other amazing marine life. Just offshore from the town of Kaikoura a deep undersea canyon attracts an extraordinary abundance of marine life, the most famous being the Sperm Whale. As the Whale watching capital of New Zealand, every Whale Watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky Dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. Kaikoura often hosts the world's largest dolphin the Orca and is home to the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin the Hectors. Our expedition will take 3.5hrs and will be cancelled if the weather is not suitable. We have a plan B up our sleeve if this is the case. Once we return from a great few hours on the water we will return and spend a relaxing afternoon exploring around Kaikoura and walking some of the easy coastal walks available.

Monday 20th April DAY FIVE After breakfast we travel from Kaikoura up the coast, watching for the many seals dotted along this rugged coastline. Crossing the Hapuku River we will make our way inland up the stunning Puhi Puhi River Valley, the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains will stand above us, as we make our way up the valley to Puhi Puhi Station. We will spend our day with our Host Nicky McArthur. Nicky will provide a Tour and informative talk on this important reserve as well. Nicky has a harrowing story to tell of the earthquake and significant loss of property and damage to the station. Puhi Puhi Station is also home to one of the two remaining colonies in the world of the endangered Hutton's shearwater, which nest in burrows high in the mountains. The establishment of a charitable trust for the protection

of this endangered seabird set in motion the process to have the entire upper area protected, in perpetuity, under a QE. Nicky is not only a member of this trust but also convenor of the Friends of the Hutton's Shearwater, formed to ensure the future of this endangered species. This will be a fabulous day and we will head back to our accommodation in Kaikoura for our last evening in this lovely location.

Tuesday 21st April DAY SIX This morning we travel back to Christchurch then home. Travelling via the very picturesque Inland Road, stopping at a lovely local café for morning tea. From here we will make our way through lovely mountain scenery on to Christchurch airport and home.

The Hidden Wonders of Our Central North Island Canyon Country TOUR CODE: NM-RNGTK

Monday 11th May DAY ONE We head south via the western lake road through Taupo to arrive in New Zealand’s unique volcanic plateau region stopping along the way for morning tea before arriving at the majestic mountain village of Whakapapa for lunch. This UNESCO world heritage alpine environment is home to the newly constructed 'Sky Waka' – Mt Ruapehu’s brand new state-of-the-art gondola opened in mid2019 and designed to transport us comfortably the 1.8km through rugged landscapes past snow laden peaks and spectacular waterfalls. Tonight, we’re gathering for a delicious dinner and resting our heads in the luxuriously opulent Chateau Tongariro. Steeped in timeless elegance and part of the local landscape since visitors first began arriving to stay in 1925, the sublime alpine views from virtually every window and impressive period interior of the hotel are an absolute delight.

Tuesday 12th May DAY TWO After breakfast we take a nature ramble through craggy bush-covered countryside to arrive for a nourishing morning tea at the charming Blue Duck Café situated within the boundaries of the Station of the same name. Featured on Country Calendar, the farm is famous as being home to one of the highest concentrations of whio (blue duck), kiwi, native bats and native fish in New Zealand. Get ready to 'go bush' as we are off on a safari here. We’ll have a tour and talk about the local history, hear stories of the ongoing conservation work and experience up close the workings of this unique sheep and beef station operating in harmony with the native flora and fauna. After that, it’s on the bus again and we’re headed for the home of the giant carrot – Oakune. A quaint ski resort town on the edge of the Tongariro National Park it’s a vibrant mecca all year round with skiers and trampers. We’re staying tonight at the boutique accommodation of Powderhorn Chateau, close to Turoa skifield. There’s time for a spell of rest and recovery before we dine in at the cosily hospitable Powerkeg restaurant.

Wednesday 13th May DAY THREE We’ll be saying 'yeeha' and 'set ‘em up Joe' after breakfast this morning, when our posse rides into town for our morning tea at farflung and authentic western-style Mellonsfolly Ranch. The old west lives on at the very end of the road within the borders of this remote and authentic thousand-acre ranch in the middle of no-place and boasting some of New Zealand’s most unspoilt native bush. We’ll be taking a stroll on the boardwalks and sauntering up the main street of the Old West Town where the Lucky Strike Saloon and Miss Nancy Ann’s Hotel have stood witness to cowboy derring-do and where horse flesh is the currency. Lunch at the ranch will be followed up with much hoopin’ and a hollerin’ as we indulge in some good ole’ western style activities like cannon firing to get the hearts pumping and our laughter lines a little deeper. With dusty boots and mean appetites, we’ll head back to the Powerhorn for some Powderkeg feasting and a warm bed to sink into for the night.

Thursday 14th May DAY FOUR After breakfast we travel down country to experience the natural beauty and geological magic of Whitecliffs Boulders. Resting serenely as they have done for eons in the dazzling Kahikatea forest above the Rangitikei River these large, perfectly round boulder formations known as cannonball concretions are covered in a soft downy crewcut of emerald moss, appearing surreal and other-worldly. It’s our privilege to have access to this special place for morning tea (weather permitting) and the tour and talk here will undoubtedly remain in your mind as we make our way to lunch at Flat Hills Café. Next port of call is the Mokai Gorge and Gravity Canyon – our miniature version of Colorado’s Grand, but nonetheless high enough to have been home to a bungee jumping point in the past. For a meal with French influence and flair we dine tonight in Taihape at Le Café Telephonique – a converted telephone exchange.

We head for our hotel tonight checking out the Rangitikei Viaduct Bridge on the way – it’s one of New Zealand’s tallest and longest rail bridges.
