Issue 15
Welcome to the No.8 Tours VIP Members Travel Club A Personal Note Hello to all No.8 Tours VIP Members and a warm welcome to all those recently joined. The past couple of months have been "interesting". Our whole country has had to learn how to approach everyday life from a different angle. It is a testing time for business the economy and its citizens. Thankfully our successive governments have had the books in reasonable order even after coming through two devastating earthquakes. Through wise but no less tough decisions were made to protect its citizens by closing down the country knowing full well the enormous effect this will play out on the economy. A decision I am sure none of us would have wanted to make, and I take my hat off to our current leadership for this. By shutting down and by the action of everyone's courageous efforts to sacrifice may have resulted in the country avoiding painful loss of life and prolonged economic winter. As I write, the great news is, by all indications, the country is tracking well towards being COVID free. Elimination is now a real possibility, medicines are under development, and vaccines are on trial, soon life can start to look normal again and yes, able to travel once again.
No.8 has been busy in their bubbles, When we started the company 11 years ago never did we realise our name would be so pertinent to what is required in today's current situation not just to survive but to thrive as well. The No.8 Ingenuity has been called upon to produce a catalogue of quality and uniqueness expected by the members. Over the past weeks, we have been busy working from home. With the uncertainty that many Tourism providers may not operate in the future, we have taken the time to re-look at our itineraries and offer. We have been in contact with most of our suppliers reassuring them we will be resuming our operation as soon as possible. We hope that helps in a small way to give confidence to these businesses. ISSUE15 has new exciting tours for those that have been on just about all the trips— we have created a whole number of innovative day tours, hidden discoveries we've never visited in our back yard before. We have taken the magnifying glass to the most popular multi-day tours and have added new activities and new destinations to make them more unique and exciting. We are genuinely proud of ISSUE15, and we hope you love it as well.
A sincere thank you from the No.8 Team We cannot find the words to express our gratitude for all your support. We have been receiving lovely calls and emails of encouragement from you all. I must apologise if I haven't answered you directly, Sarah and I have been very focused on getting ISSUE15 complete. Gretchen and Alberto have been sending them through; those messages have lifted the spirits of us all I must say. To the No.8 Senior Travel Club Members, you are our true heroes; your understanding and patience have been crucial for us to navigate through these tricky waters. We are one of the fortunate ones to continue providing the service we love to the people who want it and in some circumstances who need it. Sadly, many small businesses won't make it, and for that, as a survivor, we will be forever grateful to you and for your contribution. Please find a couple of complimentary travel vouchers enclosed as a gesture of thanks from us all here at No.8 Tours – New Zealand's Senior Travel Club. With love and good wishes from the No.8 Team
Andy, Sarah and the No.8 Tour team

Willowbrook Private Country Estate Thursday 17th September WOW we have been waiting for an opportunity to visit this unforgettable property, we have watched its progression from plans posted online, to now having the privilege to be guided through this Private Country Estate with Georgian Manor House. Beginning with the purchase of 30acres which had once been an apple orchard. Owners Peter and David, together set to work drafting plans for the house and architectural features as well as creating a plan for the landscape gardens which were designed in the manner of the 18th century English style. For 7 years, they spent all their spare time setting out the gardens and landscaping, with the help of devoted friends. They have created a collection of stunning themed gardens and outdoor rooms, blended harmoniously with the surrounding countryside. After 3 years of construction, the jewel of Willowbrook The Manor - was finally completed in 2016. We will enjoy a lunch and guided tour of this Private Estate.

Lunch at Farty Flowers Fawlty Towers! Thursday 24th September Recently relocated from England, Basil, Sybil and Manuel will host us for lunch in their new Boutique Hotel, Fawlty Towers. This lunch show is performed in true Fawlty Towers and Monty Python fashion and is as good as it gets so much so we can confidently state without a doubt that this is the most outrageous, hilarious Fawlty Towers Lunch Theatre show ever to be performed in NZ for that matter the world! The show follows a storyline with a beginning, middle and very satisfying suspenseful ending. Your hosts today, the “manic, misanthrope” Basil Fawlty and his “languid little nest of vipers” Sybil (his wife), along with their “lovable, confused and tormented” Spanish waiter Manuel will go above and beyond the call of duty. They guarantee their guests are treated to a whirlwind of classic Fawlty Towers comedy, with played out scenarios full of entertaining confusion and chaotic hilarity. A sell out last year we have limited seats so be quick. Venue destination Ohaupo.

October 2020 The Waikato West Coast Wilderness Departure Thursday 1st October DAY ONE We have an exciting experience for you all today, as we head north stopping first at the beautiful Waihi Beach for morning tea. After the beach break we will call in to the Woodturners Café for lunch before journeying to Tuakau Jetty. Here, we board the 22 metre houseboat “Discovery 1”, a state-of-the-art luxury palace on water. We will partake in a scrumptious boxed lunch on board along with plentiful tea and coffee. We depart historic Lapwood Landing and cruise upriver accompanied by the spectacular moving landscape of the Waikato Riverland, with its Maori culture, towering ancient cliffs, early history, water activities, and abundant bird life. We are following in the wake of the old paddle steamers which plied supplies upriver to Hamilton before the establishment of road and rail. This section of the Waikato River plays a significant part in New Zealand’s unsettled colonial history as the backdrop to the Maori Wars that were fought here from 1863 – 1864. As we cruise up the river, we will pass the location of the old Tuakau Sand Plant and if you look carefully under the trees, you’ll spy skeletons of abandoned barges. Learn more about the fascinating history of the Tuakau Bridge. Once we’ve disembarked, we will travel to the west coast township of Raglan where we will be spending our first night.
DAY TWO After breakfast we will be at the wharf to step aboard the Wahine Moe for about an hour’s cruise of the Whaingaroa Harbour - discovering for ourselves the delights of its expansive and distinctive coastline. The
fascinating geology, natural birdlife habitats and riveting local history will be pointed out to us by our captain and crew on this relaxing and refreshing journey. Afterwards we will be able to explore the local township and main beach – Ngarunui famous for a lot of things – and its left-hand point breaks at beaches to the south of the town making it a mecca for surfers from around the world. Many of the local shops and sights pay homage to the community’s surfing customs and traditions. Leaving Raglan mid-morning we journey through rugged country stopping for lunch and perhaps a cup of the Raglan Roast Coffee before travelling onto the impressive 55-metre high Bridal Veil Falls on the Pakoka River. We next drive to the coastal settlement of Kawhia for a short comfort stop before proceeding to our destination to overnight in Te Kuiti.
DAY THREE After breakfast we are in for a treat – a hairy feet treat to be exact. Ten years ago, when Sir Peter Jackson’s film crew turned up to Mangaotaki Valley near Piopio to film The Hobbit and put Warwick and Suzie Denize’s farm on the map, no one knew how much life was going to change. Our exploration with the Piopio Hairy Feet Tour will showcase the unusual rock formations, massive limestone cliffs, native forest, working sheep & cattle farm and the locations for the extensive film shoot. After a picnic morning tea, we’ll be off to the Awakino Hotel for a pub lunch and from there we will be enjoying a scenic drive and a stop off to access Waikawau beach through the famous Waikawau Beach Tunnel – cut into the sandstone cliffs in 1911 by three men armed only with picks and shovels. Day SEVEN The penultimate day on the Chatham Islands is underscored with a highly recommended flight to Pitt Island - a fully escorted tour for those who want to explore further afield. If you decide to stick to the main island, we have a visit to the massive olivine Basalt Columns this morning – an unusual lava rock field created out of lava flows dating back 80 million years. We’ll be finding a pleasant spot for a picnic lunch at Port Hutt, previously a main harbour for the Chathams where several vessels have run aground. Following this we will be taking a stroll through the utterly beautiful Admiral Gardens. Established by the Croon family, the garden boasts, in addition to a plethora of native and exotic plantings, vast swathes of the Chatham Island forget-me-not, a botanical mecca for bees, birds and butterflies. We’ll be lingering here after our garden tour to enjoy the Admiral Gardens hospitality with a buffet barbecue dinner before returning to Hotel Chatham for our last night on the island.
Day EIGHT Sadly, we say goodbye after breakfast to the friendly and welcoming Chatham Islanders. We depart late morning on Air Chathams bound for Auckland arriving early afternoon and connecting shortly thereafter for our Tauranga flight. Drop off to home will be late afternoon.

west of the city attracts hundreds each day in the warmer months to careen down Mother Nature’s theme park ride on a bodyboard or inner tube. We won’t be “riding the slide” here but we will instead head to the very beautiful Rere Falls to have a refreshing picnic morning tea. Lunch today will be at Eastwoodhill – New Zealand’s National Arboretum and in 2004 adjudged a Garden of National Significance. Founded in 1910 by Douglas Cook, the 135 hectares of exotic and native trees, shrubs and climber plantings is one of the region’s most visited tourist attractions. We will be touring the gardens in a 12-seater jeep with a gourmet boxed lunch to ensure we spend as much time absorbing the astonishing beauty of our glorious surroundings. A return to town and a chance to relax and wander the shops or for those with energy still to burn, the paved, 1km Riverside Trail Walk awaits. We’ll reconvene at the hotel late afternoon to put our feet up for a bit before Christmas Eve dinner at the hotel tonight.
DAY FOUR Happy Christmas! A good way to kick off this special day will be our very pleasant meander through Gisborne’s Botanical Gardens followed up with a walk on Wainui Beach to inhale the sea air and admire the ocean views. Christmas lunch will be a sumptuous feast put on by Emerald Hotel’s Nick’s Bar & Restaurant where there will be ample opportunity to eat ourselves to a standstill. Gray’s Bush Scenic Reserve 10km from the city centre is semi-coastal and home to a small but significant remnant of the tall kahikatea (podocarp) forest. This will be an excellent place to walk off the excesses of our lunch but if this is too strenuous, the beach waits for a late afternoon stroll as the day draws to a close. Our evening meal will be an appropriately light supper before we turn in after our day of revelry.
DAY FIVE Today’s blend of discoveries historical, environmental and viticultural begins with a trip up Wheatstone Road to get a bird’s eye view of Gisborne before assembling mid-morning at Dive Tatapouri. In addition to morning tea here, we’ll be hearing from their guides about the incredible work taking place at this unique marine attraction working with a range of stingray species and other sea life. From here we’ll be gathering for lunch, wine-tasting and a talk and tour at Matawhero Wines. Current owners Richard and Kirsten Searle continue a grape-growing legacy started in the 1960s which today sees them producing 8 varietals from 45 vintages and garnering a slew of awards. Afterwards we take in the historically important Titirangi Domain on Kaiti Hill. Formerly an ancient Maori settlement, there are several lookouts to admire the extensive vistas over Poverty Bay, the harbour and city. A World War II gun emplacement reminds of Gisborne’s strategic wartime location and at the summit, Cooks Plaza is a space to reflect on our colonial past. The October 1769 landing of the first Europeans - Captain Cook and his crew - is marked by an obelisk erected in 1906 near the foreshore. Following our time here we’ll be heading back to our hotel and dinner at Nick’s Bar and Restaurant – so named after Young Nick – Captain Cook’s cabin boy, who legend has it, first spotted the white cliffs of Poverty Bay.

February 2021 Captivating Catlins
we’ll head into Oamaru and get settled at our accommodation where we will dine prior to our trip out tonight to view the famous blue penguin colony. We will be witnessing the world’s smallest penguin in its natural environment at a rock quarry at the head of the harbour. Watch as these aquatic flightless birds arrive home from their days fishing and marvel in the experience of this magical event.
Departure Wednesday 3rd February
DAY THREE
While in the South Island why not extend your holiday, you can add the Stewart Island trip to make it 10 days away or make it a 19 Day South Island Sojourn by further adding on The Southern Scenic – Ask us about this and save on airfares.
Today is all about time travel starting with a trip back to the 1880s and the crazy quirky Steampunk HQ experience. Set within Oamaru’s old Grain Elevator building, the museum is a surreal dive into an altered universe of contraptions, bizarre machinery, pipes & gas cylinders, skeletal sculptures, flickering lights and even a full-scale train engine that billows smoke and spits fire. Late morning there will be time to explore the town’s Victorian Quarter before we head off to take in the Moeraki Boulders on Koekohe Beach. Large spherical concretions, these fascinating formations are said to have been growing for over 60 million years with the largest ones reaching over 2 metres wide. More ancient boulders are found at Kataki Beach with the geologically interesting Shag Point another wild and beautiful stop off point where we’re likely to catch sight of seals and penguins if we’re lucky. We then enjoy lunch at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary wildlife refuge and will take a guided tour of this important flagship biodiversity project operating in coastal Otago. A predator fence surrounds the 307-hectare sanctuary where native flora and fauna have been able to thrive. Our final destination today is Dunedin where we’ll be staying at the Scenic Hotel and dining in at the Princes on Dowling restaurant tonight.
DAY ONE This morning we fly to Christchurch. Upon arrival we’ll hop aboard a Red Shuttle bus which will give us an en route tour of the Christchurch Rebuild before we arrive at our centrally located hotel – Chateau on the Park. Our earlier bus tour may inspire the afternoon’s activities where you are free to roam and take in the highlights of the city’s regeneration and vibrant post-earthquake renaissance. Marvel at the exhibitions of the Canterbury Museum and Christchurch Art Gallery; stroll through nearby Hagley Park, the botanical gardens and along the Avon River; savour the shopping of the new Christchurch Crossing and then head back on foot or by bus to the hotel for dinner at the Garden Court Brasserie tonight.
DAY TWO After breakfast, it’s all aboard the coach for our ultimate destination of Oamaru – the largest town in North Otago and home to some beautiful Victorian architecture. But first, we’ll be stopping for morning tea and a visual treat at Lushingtons Gardens, Gifts and Café in Ashburton before heading to gather for a sumptuous lunch in the picturesque South Canterbury foothills. The quintessential Kiwi dining experience at Harlau House Café features locally sourced food, fresh seasonal vegetables and warm hospitality. After lunch we are in for something extra special. Riverstone Castle on the outskirts of Oamaru was built by owners Dot and Neil Smith to create their dream fantasy and includes a moat, a tower and even a dungeon. One of a kind and full of surprises, this impressive fortress is unforgettable. From here

DAY FOUR David Attenborough has described this morning’s destination as “a unique and very special place” that “every visitor to Dunedin should see”. The Royal Albatross Centre houses the only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross in the world. These graceful and majestic birds and their nesting and chick-rearing habits have been thrilling visitors since 1983 when viewing was opened to the public. After our very own guided tour there’s time for a cuppa at the Toroa Café and an opportunity to secure a memento from the gift shop to remind us of our time here. Sticking to the royal theme - straighten your crowns, folks – we’re heading now to Larnach Castle & Gardens on the Otago Peninsula. A rich history dating back to 1871 when merchant baron
and politician William Larnach began building the castle, the estate is magnificently set amidst exquisite grounds ascribed a Garden of International Significance. The current owners have spent decades painstakingly restoring, conserving, and assembling collections so that visitors can appreciate the breath-taking garden spectacle and astonishing craftsmanship held within this national treasure. We’ll be lunching at the Larnach Ballroom Café here before moving on to another very special time capsule - Olveston House. The authentic and original historic home built by the Theomin family was gifted to Dunedin City Council in 1967. The tour also includes the family’s motor car – a 1921 Fiat 510 Tourer. Back to the hotel and dinner at Princes on Dowling again tonight.
DAY FIVE Our journey today covers the scenic route from Dunedin to Invercargill diverting through the famous Catlins Forest Park region to encounter arguably the most pristine coast in New Zealand. A comfort stop in Balclutha is followed by morning tea along the way. Have your walking shoes at the ready because we’re going to visit the iconic landform of Nugget Point, say hello to the lighthouse and later marvel at the splendour of the tiered 20-metre-high Purakaunui Falls – the most photographed waterfall in the country. This region is home to many seabirds including penguins, gannets and royal spoonbills and is also the habitat for a large breeding colony of fur seals. A late lunch at the award-winning Whistling Frog café in Papatowai will be a yummy stopover in a pretty setting and from here we get a chance to learn more of the local history at our visit to the Waikawa Museum and Information Centre. It will be worth stopping next at the spectacular Curio Bay to stretch our legs. It’s home to a colony of rare yellow-eyed penguins, a pod of Hector’s Dolphins and when the tide goes out a 180-million-year-old Jurassic fossil forest is revealed. First lit on the 1st January 1884, the Waipapa Point lighthouse has been a popular location with photographers seeking the perfect shot and is flanked by golden beaches and is often the spot for snoozing sea lions. We’ll be stopping for around an hour and then heading to New Zealand’s southernmost city, Invercargill for the night. Accommodation is at the Ascot Park Hotel with dinner onsite tonight at the Emberz Restaurant.
DAY SIX Early departure this morning takes place after a delicious breakfast . Our flight back to Tauranga is sure to be accompanied by a feeling of wistfulness about the ending of our travels and wonderful memories of the thrilling adventures experienced amid the unique beauty in this spectacular part of the South Island.

We will pass through the patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains and journey over the regions magnificent braided rivers. The Coastal Pacific train is rated one of New Zealand’s best scenic train trips, with an on-board licensed café, GPS triggered (at-seat) commentary and open air-viewing, it’s an unforgettable experience and a relaxing journey for all. Once we reach the coastal town of Picton, at the head of the Marlborough’s sounds, we will hop off the train stretch the legs for half an hour, then return to the train to cruise the rails once again along the rugged coast line to our final destination Kaikoura. Arriving mid-afternoon, we will bus the short distance to our seaside accommodation then out for tea.
DAY THREE Just after midnight on 14 November 2016, most of central New Zealand woke following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake 60km south west of the coastal town of Kaikōura. Generating the strongest ground acceleration ever recorded in New Zealand and caused widespread damage throughout the districts of Hurunui, Marlborough and Kaikōura. With close to a million cubic meters of rock and material falling onto the coastal transport corridor, Kaikōura and the surrounding rural communities were isolated - all roads and the rail network in and out of the area were damaged and closed by the slips. This major event disrupted the lives of many: homes were damaged, businesses were

closed, farms left with damaged land and no access to markets for their goods, and communities devastated by the loss of trade from passing traffic and tourists. Today we will be joined on the bus by local resident and business owner Ben Judge who will explain firsthand events of that day he will point out major geological changes and provide an insight into living post-quake around the region. Along the way we will stop for lunch and return midafternoon to our accommodation.
DAY FOUR We have an exciting day in store, we will be armed with sonar rather than the cold steel harpoon of centuries gone by. Kaikoura's whale watching is one of New Zealand's deservedly famous attractions. Whale Watch is the original guided cruise company to take trips out along the Kaikoura coast and view these magnificent whales and other amazing marine life. Just offshore from the town of Kaikoura a deep undersea canyon attracts an extraordinary abundance of marine life, the most famous being the Sperm Whale. As the Whale watching capital of New Zealand, every Whale Watch tour is a unique experience and the sightings vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch tour may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky Dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. Depending on the season you may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales. Kaikoura often hosts the world's largest dolphin the Orca and is home to the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin the Hectors. Our expedition will take 3.5hrs and will be cancelled if the weather is not suitable. We have a plan B up our sleeve if this is the case. Once we return from a great few hours on the water we will return and spend a relaxing afternoon exploring around Kaikoura and walking some of the easy coastal walks available.
DAY FIVE After breakfast we travel from Kaikoura up the coast, watching for the many seals dotted along this rugged coastline. Crossing the Hapuku River we will make our way inland up the stunning Puhi Puhi River Valley, the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains will stand above us, as we make our way up the valley to Puhi Puhi Station. We will spend our day with our Host Nicky McArthur. Nicky will provide a Tour and informative talk on this important reserve as well. Nicky has a harrowing story to tell of the earthquake and significant loss of property and damage to the station. Puhi Puhi Station is also home to one of the two remaining colonies in the world of the endangered Hutton's shearwater, which nest in burrows high in the mountains. The establishment of a charitable trust for the protection of this endangered seabird set in motion the process to have the entire upper area protected, in perpetuity, under a QE. Nicky is not only a member of this trust but also convenor of the Friends of the Hutton's Shearwater, formed to ensure the future of this endangered species. This will be a fabulous day and we will head back to our accommodation in Kaikoura for our last evening in this lovely location.
DAY SIX This morning we travel back to Christchurch then home. Travelling via the very picturesque Inland Road, stopping at a lovely local café for morning tea. From here we will make our way through lovely mountain scenery on to Christchurch airport and home.

The image of the rugged, resilient and resourceful farmer working the land is integral to our view of New Zealand and shapes our national character. Yet today, so few of us have the opportunity to experience this iconic way of life and environment. Owners of Retauruke Lodge set out to search for a property that combined all that is so special about heartland NZ and which would allow them to share this lifestyle to provide a truly memorable and treasured experience. A lunch and tour await us with our hosts, we won't want to leave however we must, and we'll head back to the Powerhorn for some Powderkeg feasting and a warm bed to sink into for the night.
DAY FIVE It’s always a joy to appreciate the beauty of a true craftsman so it will be an interesting visit to Alba Custom Knives after our breakfast. Hunterville Custom Knifemaker, John McDonald has spent decades literally honing his skills in this traditional art form - part of our human existence for many thousands of years. While we enjoy a picnic morning tea here at his workshop, John will be sharing his significant knowledge and there will be an opportunity to purchase your own custom knife as a unique memento of the day. Our scenic drive then brings us to Makoura Lodge - the beautiful 600 acre farm of Hugh and Kimberley McIntyre where lunch is served and there’s time for a wander and a stimulating talk about the property’s history and heritage dating back to 1896. We head for our hotel tonight checking out the Rangitikei Viaduct Bridge on the way – it’s one of New Zealand’s tallest and longest rail bridges.
DAY SIX It’s always sad to say farewell to this picturesque part of the North Island. We’ll learn more of their inspiring conservation programme and environmental protection initiatives over morning tea followed by a tour of the property. We depart here and head north to Waiouru. Frequently Asked Questions 1. How do I become a VIP Member?
8. Can I request special dietary requirements?
Very easy to do, all that's required is call or email No.8 Tours with a request to become a member. We then register your details on the Database and post you our catalogue. Your travelling companion will also receive the VIP member pricing even though they aren't yet a member. If they would like to become a member as well, please let us know, or they can contact us directly.
We can request special dietary requirements for the meals throughout the tour, the details of which will be passed onto the suppliers; however, we can't guarantee that the suppliers can always do this.
2. How far in advance should I make my reservation? We encourage you to make your reservation as early as possible mainly if you are limited to a specific period in which you can travel. Multi-day tours tend to fill quickly.
3. Do I need to pay a deposit? Deposits are required on booking to confirm your reservation; however, you can make a provisional booking without a deposit. If we are holding your provisional booking and someone else would like to take it, you may be asked to release it or commit by way of deposit. In the past Members have been missing out, as bookings weren't confirmed by way of receipted deposit. "Provisional bookings" that have past the balance due date of the trip will be cancelled.
4. How many vouchers can I redeem towards a tour payment? As a way of showing our appreciation for your custom No.8 Tours provides a complimentary $15.00 travel voucher automatically every time you take a multi-day tour with us. 6. Why are single rooms more expensive? The price per person for single occupancy is higher than the price per person for double occupancy. ... I wanted to say thankyou to the gentleman that went out his way to walk me to my front door at 10;30 at night, upon my return from Les Miserables. I am 90, had a very long day and felt safe and cared for. I didn’t expect such level of service and am so impressed.
