Fuel supply

Since its construction in 1967, the Mesnils Pasteur housing complex in the town of Dole has had its heating needs covered by an

The fuel used is bark, collected from the sawmills of the whole Franche Comté region. Fuel delivery is the responsibility of a transport company. The fuel is received untreated, and is transformed on site and is then stored in a feeder silo of 400 m 3 which is enough for two or three day’s use at full capacity. It is also planned to supply the boiler with 1,200 tonnes of forest wood. The association AVENIR, providing work for the disadvantaged, has a wood shredder at its disposal and plans to collect wood from the nearby Forest of Chaux. After several months’ storage over the winter, the fuel will be delivered as and when needed in mid-season.

urban boiler plant. This boiler plant was equipped with three generators : one coal-fired (12 MW), one bi-fuel oil/natural gas (15 MW), and also an oil (15 MW). The town of Dole needed to invest in a new boiler with a smaller output to cover the summer period in comfort. The decision was taken to install a wood-fired boiler to diversify the energy sources used and to assure a constant supply of competitively-priced energy. The final choice of fuel was the use of bark, which is abundant in the area and is a low-priced source of wood energy.

The chain has been designed to cope with a large variety of types of wood waste (bark, pallets, industry by-products etc.) The system screens, grinds and removes the iron from the wood delivered. The installation deals with 12,000 tonnes of wood per year, and guarantees the boiler a certain level of independence, since it means that several sources of wood can be called upon.

A self-operating boiler The boiler has an output of 3,200 kW, which is 17 % of the total capacity installed. It covers 36% to 48 % of the heating and hot water requirements of the complex. It works at full capacity from October to May and at the required rate over the summer. The boiler is entirely selfoperating, from the supply of fuel to the clearing of the ashes. The boiler furnace with mobile grates takes the fuel with a moisture content of up to 60% gross weight.Multi cyclones removes the dust from the smoke. The ashes are removed by a worm screw to a special receptacle. The boiler is also equipped with a system for limiting Nitrogen Oxide emissions.
