Regarding I.T.F. - C, we have had many emails to date asking why we do not use content from the I.T.F.-C administration site, as we do from the rest of the I.T.F.’s. In an e-mail dated 05/01/10 sent to our senior editor, the Secretary General wrote - “Your magazine has no interest to our I.T.F. and as your news is copied from webs, our members can source the same information from where they like, as you do to edit your needs. All new and relevant I.T.F. news is communicated weekly to our INO'S around the World and I am happy with the information foundations we have in place”. Editors Response: This statement is not entirely true, I am afraid, as many articles are not from the sites mentioned but submitted items from genuine authors. We will always add information from their groups members if they submit it directly to us by the deadline but, as their Head Office have made the above statement publicly, we must respect their wishes. Therefore, from January this year, we decided we will not add their content to any future issues unless they retract the above request made. We trust this clears up why we are not covering their news as much nowadays.

Editors Notice Regarding issue 6: In February 2010 (issue 6), we unwittingly used a very unfair and offensive term for the I.T.F. under Mr. Ung by calling it I.T.F. - N.K. For a basketball fanatic, injuries in the knee joints can be considered common aside from sprains and ankle strains. So suit up your child with elbow and knee pads; you can also add eye goggles and a mouth guard. In baseball, swinging the bat and throwing balls may take their toll on your child's muscles. But all the sliding on the base plate and the risk of being hit by a ball can pose a more serious injury that can afflict joints and other bone tissues. Your child's basic protective gear should include a batting helmet, elbow and knee pads, protective gloves, and shin guards.

Sports injuries are not child's play by Sharon Bell Games are definitely fun, especially for children. But playing in sports can turn into a hospital emergency for your kids. Statistical data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that annually close to 800,000 children suffer from injuries that are related to playing sports; and a big chunk of this number are linked to basketball, baseball, football and soccer. In the same study, it has also been found that over 60% of the injuries are associated with damages in the joints. For most parents, sports injuries are an acceptable risk for all kinds of sports; in other words, if you do not want your child to get wet, then do not allow him or her to frolic in the rain. But the thing is that long after a sports injury has healed, certain complications may sprout later in your kid's life. And the most difficult backlash may come in the form of osteoarthritis. Yes, it is true! Sports injuries can put your child five times more prone to osteoarthritis than someone who has not experienced any abuse in the joints. And while osteoarthritis may come out years later, even after the sports injuries have completely healed, children of today—especially those who love to play sports—are exposed to greater risks of joint diseases. Indeed, osteoarthritis and other joint diseases are no longer confined to the 50- or 60-year-old age brackets; members of the younger generations who have experienced sports injuries may suffer the symptoms of various joint and bone diseases as early as in their late twenties. But this should not deter you from allowing your child to be out there playing basketball, baseball, football or soccer; the benefits of getting your child involved in sports are clear and incontrovertible. The issue at hands is how you can best protect your child's joints and bones from being injured in a game; doing so will greatly diminish his or her chances of acquiring joint diseases like osteoarthritis later in life. Surely, you know a lot about preparing your child's body for any game; stamina and resistance play important roles on how a player, young or old alike, will perform in any physical sport. But the key to an injury-free playtime is wearing the right protective gear. Giving your child added security against traumas common in any physical sport may be the smartest thing to do.

If your child plays football, sprains and torn ligaments are the most common types of injuries to look out for. Invest in sports gear like helmet, chest and shoulder pads, shin guards, and, of course, the right shoes. Soccer is another form of football, but in this sport your kid does not need a helmet nor chest and shoulder pads; shin guards and pads on the elbows and knees will do. Indeed, osteoarthritis and other joint diseases have become the leading causes of disability in the US; and the victims keep on getting younger each year. Protect yourself and your child from the symptoms of these diseases such as stiffness and pains in the joints. While sports injuries sustained by your child may cause osteoarthritis much later in his or her life, it is good to know that there are specially formulated products that can improve the health of one's joints. When the day that osteoarthritis does arrive, you can use products like Phosoplex to help you deal with joint diseases. Visit www.Phosoplex.com for more details.

Bullies work in different ways: Ask a child at your school / club what a bully is and they will return the answer of someone that hits you, calls you names or torments you for no reason - the real truth is bullies exist in all walks of life and, with today's ever improving technology, the bully is even more able to wreak havoc on lives by the use of mobile phones, texting and e-mailing. Reportedly, they have now gone to another level by also attacking individuals on social networks. The sad fact I learnt recently is many of these networks do not recognise U.K. law (in particular the Malicious Communications Act) so, yet again, the bully gets away with it - or do they? Bullying often follows you into adulthood, especially if you do not work on your confidence and body language level at an early age. This is when the learning of a Martial Art like Tae Kwon Do comes of good use, as many clubs and styles are not just about fighting these days, but about building confidence and self control in their members lives. Bullying is often responsible for leaving you feeling worthless and making you do something out of character in extreme situations, suicide seems to be the easiest way out, leaving the family of the victim destroyed and still the bully moves on to attack his next victim. Due to a situation in 2009 that resulted in me being pushed out of a group he liked (and still today I find the same person tries to provoke me by making claims that I am doing things I am not), we decided to arm ourselves and learn a bit about law. We uncovered the Malicious Communications Act - this says all users of mobile phones and the internet can now be held accountable for their actions against others. The law states if you have a complaint against you twice in a six month period, you will be arrested and get a criminal record. You may lose your civil rights too, so think before you type or call your next victim. A new campaign is being rolled out in the U.K. to make everyone aware that if they do misuse the internet and phones, they will be penalised heavily as this problem has reached an all time high and is now classed as an epidemic (about time I say). From 2003 to 2004 31,000 children called Childline in desperation after being victimised by bullies in various ways. The law is getting stricter on offenders - keyboard warriors are finding themselves in deep water, as new technology traces the IP address and brings down these individuals. For many years now in Martial Arts, Instructors and seniors have used their positions to demean the lower grades sending e-mails which have been in poor taste, yet we don’t report it - why? Because no one listened for fear that their position will make you look stupid and you won’t be taken seriously. I think we are all guilty of heated arguments with each other and going too far, but now we all must show restraint or face the courts. Often a bullying nature is used to control the victim, but now even the heads of corporations must watch their step as the law is finally looking after all of us. If you are facing any type of harassment, this is bullying so get on the phone and report your bully. If your bully is calling your phone, get the number barred after a few calls then report them - you will have the last laugh. Editor: Chris Snow

www.tkd-itf.org The last IIC we have in Malaysia was in the year 2000, Johor, Malaysia conducted by General Choi. www.tkd-itf.org

The IIC, last week end was very meaningful to all of my members and myself, after all this year, the IIC was back in Malaysia. With the present all the Grand Masters, Trajtenberg, Marano and Bos, we were very please and have learn a lot of new approach, the implementation and application, standardization of technique etc. Overall we have learned and took a lot of benefit from this seminar. For some of my student its something they hardly see and know.

Therefore we are looking forward to have similar IIC here in Malaysia in the near future. I myself was so great full to all the GM Masters for their vast experience in taekwon-do, sharing them with us. Even members from foreign country such as Singapore, Indonesia,Vietnam,Thailand (special thank to master Rountwhite for his presence and assistance during the IIC), Nepal, Phillippines and as far as Finland were attending this IIC.

We all take part in this thing we call martial arts, but at the end of the day, what is the real point in the activity? What is it within man’s psyche which seeks to control something as harrowing as being attacked by another? The martial arts are necessary to mankind, since every person has a built-in fear of attack. This is proved in the very existence of Adrenaline, a Fight or Flight hormone. It is part of a law of self-preservation & self-protection. Evolution has built every creature with this quality, which conforms to the natural law. It is a sad truth that potential harm could be caused to you by another human being. There is no manner of protection you can give yourself, but to prepare for the worst. It makes no difference how big or strong you are, how intelligent you are, or how fast your reactions. You alone will not be enough to defend a gang, & therefore the fear is always present. In that famous philosophical & political text, the Leviathan (1651), Hobbes argued this case most succinctly. He stated that although some men may be stronger or more intelligent than others in their natural state, none are so strong as to be beyond a fear of violent death. This consequently justifies self-defence as man's highest necessity. This necessity, though slightly pessimistic is at the same time realistic. Even those with a “Love thy neighbour” philosophy recognise the natural necessity for self-defence. Evidence even suggests that Jesus himself was said to have believed in the need for self-defence. In the Gnostic gospel[EN-1] of St. Thomas, Jesus tells Thomas; “Fortunate is the man who knows where the brigands will enter, so that he may get up, muster his domain, and arm himself before they invade. “So the case for self-defence as a necessary human endeavour is apparent. It does not matter how much money you have, how many bodyguards you surround yourself with, the fear of being attacked is a homo-psychological “ball & chain”.

How many people have actually considered Bruce Lee’s ideas & taken them further? Let us not forget the death of this legend, but also let us remember that he died whilst many of his theories were still evolving. As great as he was, (which I do not disagree with) he was a single man who was a part of the evolution of martial arts as Newton was to physics & his ideas were evolving continuously. Lee himself stated that: “The founder of any branch of Chinese gung fu [or any form of martial arts] must be more ingenious than the common man. If his achievement is not carried on by his disciples of the same ingenuity, then things will only become formalized and get stuck in a cul-desac; whereby breakthrough and progress will be almost impossible.“

In other words, Lee has pinpointed the reason for crystallization and tradition in the martial arts (or indeed any subject). The fact that truly innovative & ingenious people are rare, means that if it is carried on by people with less ingenuity (not to be confused with intelligence[EN-2]), through the attempt to retain the innovation, the system is taught in a formalised way, lest any secret be lost in digressing. Eventually, the system becomes stale & hence “breakthrough and progress will be almost impossible”. Lee’s concepts were like the prism to a beam of light. His concepts showed the spectrum of colour present in light. But he did not invent light. We must remember, that as innovative as Lee’s ideas are; they can always be improved upon. The danger lies in when people are satisfied, or accepting of the ideas & unwilling to challenge them [EN-3]. This is the very reason for martial arts becoming crystallised and traditionalised. When no fluidity & flexibility is present, death commences.

There are many different paths which will lead to enlightenment. However, mastery can extend from understanding the path which so-called “Enlightened ones” have taken. The secret is not to assume it’s impossible because you find it hard. But to recognise that if it’s humanly possible, you can do it too [EN-4]. Basic psychology tells us that in most situations, under the same stresses, people act & react in much the same way. Therefore, given the same impetus as Lee had, taking the same course of study & reading the same books as Lee, you will come to realise that which Lee realised. For that reason, my philosophy is not to blindly follow Lee’s method, but to study that which he himself had sought. Furthermore, this resonates in the understanding of anything. I read that which Aristotle read, so that I may come to the same conclusions as Aristotle. Given the same impetus, most people will come to the same conclusions. Everything in the world manifests itself. The secret of realising the so-called secrets of martial arts is to look at what is in your sight. The secret is that there are no secrets. Consider that the secrets descend from the founder of the style. The founder of the art discovered the truth, & naturally, after his passing this truth was protected by his followers in order to keep control of the school. However, if the founder discovered it in his own path, you may follow the path to reach the same conclusion [EN-5]. In the words of the Greek philosopher Meno, “by a process of mere questioning, will he attain a true science, knowledge in the fullest sense by the recovery of such science out of himself.”

Only then will what was once hidden become plain to you. Others will recognise the innovation of your thought, because they realise it has always been there but they were unaware of it. Gravity has always been present on the earth, but the innovation of Newton was that he brought it to people’s attention. If gravity had always been present, what did he truly say that was innovative? He simply saw what was in his sight (the apple falling) & what was once hidden (the existence of gravity) became plain to him. Lee looked at what was plain to him; the movements of the human body & their application to fighting - and what was out of sight became visible. His own teaching of this path was what he called Jeet Kune Do. By looking at what is in your sight; what is unknown will become evident to you. That was the purpose of JKD. “Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back.”

For example, our perspective of fire tells us that it is hot & causes pain & damage; but if we were to view it from the perspective of granite, fire would not cause any damage at all. It’s powers of destruction are purely relative depending upon the subject receiving its effects. Therefore, we can only know anything from a human perspective. The meaning of truth was summed up perfectly by a Greek philosopher named Parmenides who stated that one should “…view the world with an independent, or true view (that is independent of time and position, the accidents & peculiar view point of the receiver)”. This is a much better explanation than that which the dictionary gives; “that which is not False…conforming with reality”. It stands to reason that in any situation, there will be many different sides, but there remains only one truth. What happened, happened - that is the fact & the truth. But ask any observers & each version will be slightly different. Thus, the very meaning of the truth, suggests that an individual truth is impossible – a mere illusion. The truth lies in seeing passed the “versions”; the perception, to see the totality; the truth. Each martial art is a version of the truth, a perspective. Tae Kwon-Do teaches that kicks are the answer, Judo demonstrates that throwing is the answer; Muay Thai promotes elbow & shins as the answer.

Lee had the right idea in “taking what is useful & discarding the rest”. With this idea, Lee infers that martial So consider those basic techniques you practice over & over. arts have elements that are useful, but they also have parts Do not wish for more, for you have the secrets already. When that have missed the point. This is true since all martial you can truly understand this, then you too will have the arts are a “version” of the truth. In the same way as a secret of ingenuity. police officer will ask all the witnesses to build up a true picture of the event, or an historian who will look at all the sources in context. It is your faculty in discovering the truth to identify that which is useful as separate from that which is useless. What is useful is universal. This universal will appear in many art forms. Be your own police officer; look at all the arts, take what is useful, it’s Bruce Lee once INTRODUCING point of view within context, compare with others & build stated: “The a true view of the martial arts event by discarding the rest. Truth in Combat is This being said, however, what Lee didn’t quite reach is different for the fact that what is useful will always be the same. each Perhaps this was part of his theory which was not fully individual." explored. Why is it that he opted for Boxing techniques in To critique this his JKD? I believe that it is because they are natural statement, we techniques, which follow a principle of natural simplicity. must first look He didn’t use “Boxing” techniques, he used techniques at what “truth“ which are natural to the human body, which happen to is. To the also be in boxing. Why did he not use Karate gedan philosophical barai? How many non-martial artists do you see use a Pessimism Gedan barai in a pub brawl? Techniques with more movement in Western philosophy, no truth can ever be artifice than reality are useless and are therefore the first known, because our entire understanding of the world around methods to be discarded. In accordance to the dictionary us is constructed by what our senses tell us (and our senses description, these techniques are not true because they do can often be mistaken). not have a basis in ordinary reality.

So why these specific techniques? The Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius stated that “To a reasoning being, an act that accords with nature is an act that accords with reason.” The explanation as to why nature is a perfect example of reason & structure is too complex to argue in this article. Nevertheless, nature has an inert way of being terminally simple. It is only our human inability to see the bottom of the iceberg that makes our minds consider the world as complex.

Take your mind away from your body, & what you have left is an object. Imagine that your body is an object like any other. The body is a weapon like any inanimate object – it has its very own armoury in the form of bones. Conversely, the human body has many weak points; where nerves converge, where tendons are just beneath the skin & where bones cannot protect the vital organs well enough (the floating ribs for example). This is a good argument for the proof of Dim Mak or fabled “Death Touch“. Now if your body is a weapon, consider it “Ding An Sich”, or “The thing in itself“. This was a philosophical idea popularised by a German philosopher named Immanuel Kant (22 April 1724 – 12 February 1804). He argued that because the mind bases it’s knowledge of the world around it from the senses, we must recognise that these senses are a purely human perception. Therefore, objects exist in & of themselves & do not need someone to perceive it in order for it to exist [EN-6]. This means that we should consider the weapon in itself – take the hand for example. The most powerful parts are the knuckles, the palm & the base (when clenched). The application of these areas to the open targets of the opponent creates a phenomenon more commonly known as a “technique”. I argue that many martial arts teach techniques without looking at their elemental purpose. If the body’s weapons were considered Ding An Sich, alongside the target of application or it’s point of convergence, then the techniques will happen naturally. If we take these possible techniques as the parameters of fighting we can begin to construct the truth in combat. Parameters & elements are present in every subject. Music, for example, is based upon the same notes. Any kind of music, from classical to Punk rock uses the same basic notes. With this in mind, all humans have two arms & two legs, which means that all movements possible are limited to the range of motion possible with these limbs. Once you have identified which parts of the body are best used as weapons, we must also consider the targets on the human body in which these can be applied. [1] The Gnostic gospels are thought by some to be the true Christianity. These texts were discovered in Egypt & are referred to as the Nag Hammadi. Arguably one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th Century, they are texts much closer to Jesus’ original teachings.

Some even pre-date the more wellknown 4 Gospels in RomanCatholic Christianity. These texts have gained much Modern popularity because of conspiracy theories as well as The Da Vinci Code. For a good account of the texts & the religion, see Ehrman’s “Lost Christianities”. For the full copy of St. Thomas’ Gospel, consult Ehrman’s “Lost Scriptures”. [2] It is evidenced in many martial arts systems whereby the founders ideas are not furthered & are not progressed. A good example would be Lee’s JKD. Some masters have taken the art further, looked into what Lee was studying & improved the system where Lee was interrupted. Others on the other hand state, sometimes ignorantly, that Lee’s ideas can never be improved & describe the highest point achievable in the martial arts. This would be a mentality based upon faith rather than informed reason. [3] Einstein once remarked that ingeniousness was a unique combination of knowledge & imagination. Many people are intelligent, & knowledgeable, but few are ingenious. [4] A truly inspiring statement, however, I have simply paraphrased the words of the great Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius, Book 6, 19. For more inspiring lines, see Aurelius’ Meditations. [5] Although my philosophy is geared towards self-teaching & learning, there are many pitfalls. The study must be made soberly, looking at all the possible areas of study & viewing the whole picture. That way, any knowledge gained can be put into context. We must consider the main exponents of the study, say Bruce Lee, Morihei Ueshiba, et al, and seek to learn the underlying principles of each masters method. We cannot rule-out any masters ideology based upon our own favourites, or our own opinions. Self-teaching means you must act in two minds; as a student & as your own critical teacher. [6] Remember that well known saying; “If a tree falls in a forest, does it make a sound?”. Consider this carefully. The word “sound” infers a sense - which needs a living being to perceive it. Since trees have no sense to perceive “sound”, would the tree falling make a “sound”? In effect, the phenomenon of “sound” cannot exist without a sense to make the vibrations of the air mean anything.

GM Cho Sang Min reads first T.K.D. book written in1959

This past month of March marked the 44th anniversary of the foundation of the International TaekwonDo Federation (ITF). What better way to celebrate this event than to be in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of (south) Korea. This is the city where the ITF was formed on March 22, 1966. Forty four years to the day, several original Pioneer Grandmasters were invited to Seoul by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), a 37 year rival of the ITF. The purpose of the invitation was to thank, honor and credit these Taekwon-Do Pioneers, who were the founding members of the ITF, for their hard work and dedication in spreading Taekwon-Do to the world before the WTF was even thought of.

(The WTF was formed 7 years after the ITF in May of 1973. This was one

year after Gen. Choi exiled himself to Canada to escape political oppression by the increasing brutality of the military dictatorship in power at that time in south Korea. Members of the ITF voted to move their international headquarters to Toronto Canada. The year 1972 was the height of the oppression of the dictator who came to power in a military coup eleven years earlier on May 16, 1961. He only fell out of power when he was shot and killed at point blank range on October 26, 1979 by his own KCIA man.) The invitation by the WTF was extended to Col. Nam Tae Hi, who cofounded the Oh Do Kwan, the military gym where Taekwon-Do was originally developed and Gen. Choi Hong Hi’s “right hand man” through TaekwonDo’s early period of development. Invited as well were Grandmasters Cho Sang Min (Pioneer–Brazil), Kong Yong Il (1973 World Tour Team Member) and Kong Yong Bo (1st ITF Overall World Champion 1974). Others that were invited were Grandmasters Kim Jong Chan (Pioneer-Singapore, Malaysia & Coordinator of the ITF Formation Committee), Choi Chang Keun (PioneerMalaysia & 1973 World Tour Team Member), Park Jong Soo (PioneerGermany, Holland, Canada, 1965 & 73 World Team Tour Member), Rhee Ki Ha (Pioneer-United Kingdom & Ireland, 1973 World Tour Team Member), Lee Yoo Sun (Pioneer-Hong Kong, Holland, France) and Yang Woo Sup (Pioneer–Australia). These were all soldiers or students under the leadership of Gen. Choi, the man that named the Korean Martial Art of Self Defense Taekwon-Do that he was developing along with his military team.

The ITF was formed in Seoul back in 1966 with 9 initial member countries. These countries were Korea, United States, Italy, United Arab Republic, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Germany and Turkey. The preparatory committee to form the ITF met on February 26, 1966. The ITF was registered as a social organization (#27) with the Education Ministry of south Korea on October 27, 1967. On November 5, 1968 the ITF registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (#66) as a private organization for international goodwill. This marked the first time in Korean history that an international organization was headquartered in Korea. When the ITF was formed the Korean Ministry of National Defense issued order #95 which called for all Korean armed forces to train in Taekwon-Do. So the military and police started to learn ITF Taekwon-Do, with one of the first instructors being Grandmaster Kim Yong Chan.

The purpose of establishing the ITF was threefold: 1) To spread Taekwon-Do, the Korean National Art of Self Defense around the world with the goal of cultural exchanges which would foster friendly relations from the member nations. 2) To improve physical standards, promote indomitable spirit and provide wholesome international Taekwon-Do games with a goal of building a more peaceful society. 3) To advance both the theory and techniques of Taekwon-Do as well as unify the rules of the international games so a high standard and value of Taekwon-Do could be met and maintained. The ITF was spread quickly around the world due to the efforts of the ITF and the talent and drive of its international instructors that they trained and dispatched around the world. This coincided with the rise in popularity that had Western society eagerly embrace Asian martial arts. In effect these Korean men, who left home to spread TaekwonDo around the world, not only shared Taekwon-Do, but taught their students about Korea, its history, customs, language and culture. They were among the first exports of Korea, before it became the economic power house it is today. For their efforts, these Koreans should be honored as national heroes and patriots. Today, as a result of their George presents copy of 1st TKD efforts the ITF style of Taekwon-Do is practiced in over 100 Magazine to ITF Instructor Kim Hoon countries around the world. The event took place at a press conference called at the headquarters of the WTF on March 22, 2010, which coincided with the 44th birthday of the formation of the ITF. Plaques and gifts were presented to these Pioneer Taekwon-Do Grandmasters for their “dedicated service, outstanding contribution, and lifelong endeavors to the promotion and development of Taekwondo”. The plaques were presented to the Pioneers by Dr. Choue Chung Won, the President of the WTF. Dr. Choue took over at the helm of the WTF as a result of scandals that rocked the WTF, the Kukkiwon and Taekwondo in Korea. Under his leadership the WTF has now spread to 190 Member Nations around the world. Dr. Choue, while not a Taekwondo man, is an academic with a record of integrity. It was personally refreshing to hear his words, which in my view are a great first step in the outreach to the original style of TaekwonDo.

While we are unable to have all of the pioneers with us, this is a great day as we gather together to not only to honor your legacies, but also the others that have gone before us. Our sport and our culture have long traditions. While we look to a new vision for the future, it is important to recognize where we have been. The past can offer guiding lessons as we pave the way for our sport to reach beyond borders of any kind. And as a family, your dedication is a part of all of our history. We want to nurture this bond and work to be whole once again; uniting the legacy of our past and the vision of our future. So today, we gather here to show our appreciation for your dedication and sacrifice that has led us to where we are.

In appreciation for your dedicated service, outstanding contribution, and lifelong efforts to promote and develop Taekwondo, I would like to present to you this token of gratitude from not only myself, as the President of the World Taekwondo Federation, but also the entire taekwondo family. Thank You” The festivities were captured by LUV Films (www.LUVfilms.com), a company established in 2004 that has been hard at work in documenting the history of Tae Kwon Do. I have been involved with this effort since 2006. This event was prompted in part by an interview of Dr. Choue conducted by LUV Films back in 2007. In that interview Dr. Choue promised that in the future he would invite the ITF Grandmaster Pioneers and honor them, as without their efforts Taekwon-Do may not have had the success it had today or even make it into the Olympics. The internal politics of the Korean Martial Art organizations have been in place since the onset. Like all organizations, Tae Kwon Do has its share of these internal politics. Additionally Tae Kwon Do was both blessed and cursed by Korea’s national and geo-politics in a way that no other Martial Art has. This historic event was a good move in the right direction. These invited Grandmasters were just a representative sample of a list containing some 80 plus names, including Gen. Choi that was submitted to the WTF during these events. While we may never completely eradicate internal politics from the picture, hopefully some of the curses that have plagued Tae Kwon Do from early on can finally be put to rest. All Tae Kwon Do practitioners around the world should follow the examples of these Tae Kwon Do leaders displayed by the spirit of this event, as well as refrain from participating in any further negative ways that are just not the Martial Art Way.

Gloria Rhee, (Poon Sun) sister of GM Rhee Ki Ha meets with Col. Nam as GM Cho & WTF Secty Genl looks on as well as many who played an important role in helping to develop the sport of Taekwondo and gain official Olympic sport status. Col. Nam started teaching Tang Su Do (Korean karate) in the Army as early as 1947. He performed a demonstration in front of the first president of Korea, Seung Man Rhee and broke 13 roof tiles. The President was so impressed that he ordered Gen. Choi, Col. Nam’s superior officer to teach this to all the troops. As a result the Oh Do Kwan was established and the 29th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Fist Division”, spearheaded the development and spread of Taekwon-Do throughout Korea. Col. Nam was Gen. Choi’s self described right hand man through these efforts.

Dr. Choue and his administration were not in office during the years that Tae Kwon Do suffered as a result of the political interference and mudslinging that occurred during a series of military dictators. Hopefully he will continue to reach out with his extended hand and that hand will be embraced by more in the future. Only time will tell. Hopefully Korea will let go the hold that they have on Tae Kwon Do, so it came finally become the true international martial art and Olympic sport, with no ties, bonds to any nation, with no country exerting undue influence or control over it. This will be the measure of whether Tae Kwon Do can live up to its mandate as an international art and Olympic sport. Maybe then, Gen. Choi Hong Hi, the man most responsible for the globalization of Taekwon-Do can be truly honored for his efforts and the vision he had for spreading the Art he named around the world with the purpose of building a more peaceful world by building martial artists with outstanding physical traits and high moral character.

It is hoped that each one of us can do their best to build friendships and unity through Tae Kwon Do. LUV Films is trying to do this with their first film, TONG-IL the movie. The website has been launched at: http://www.TONG-ILmovie.com. I was both excited and proud to be a guest of the WTF, along with these Pioneers, while trying to do my small part. Please remember to check future issues of OriginalITF E-Zine for more information. As always I can be reached at: TKD.Research@yahoo.com. I urge all of us to do your part in bringing all Tae Kwon Do students together, regardless of style or affiliation! Grandmaster Nam Tae Hi: Col. Nam started training at the Chung DoKwan at the end of the occupation period when Korea was freed of Japan’s rule. The Chung Do Kwan was one of the first Korean karate schools to open. It was an important and influential civilian Kwan. Col. Nam was a senior member. This Kwan produced many great second generation leaders that played vital roles in developing original Taekwon-Do for self defense in the Korean Military,

In 1959 Col.Nam accompanied Gen. Choi as the team leader on the historic Taekwon-Do demonstration team to first demonstrate abroad, when they visited Vietnam and Taiwan. Col. Nam played key roles in developing the first two new Korean patterns, Hwa Rang and Chung Mu. He was the first chief instructor dispatched to Vietnam to teach their soldiers the deadly art of self defense he helped develop called Taekwon-Do. For his efforts he is referred to as the “Father of Taekwon-Do in Vietnam”. Col. Nam spent a full year there, from December of 1962 to December of 1963. All students of Taekwon-Do in Vietnam can trace the heritage to him. He held the first Asian Championships in Hong Kong back in 1969. He relocated to the United States in the 1970s, settling in the Chicago area. Col. Nam served as a vice president of the ITF, leaving the organization and Gen. Choi due to his outreaches and Taekwon-Do work with north Korea. Col. Nam now resides in the Los Angles area and is involved with the Taekwon-Do Pioneers Council.Grandmaster Cho Sang Min was a chief instructor of the ITF back in Seoul Korea. He was instrumental in helping Gen. Choi to devise the patterns Moon Moo, So San, Eui Am and Yon Gae.

As the ITF instructor he was responsible for graduating many students of the 4th degree level and above to international instructors. One of the most prominent ones was the late Grandmaster Park Jung Tae. Grandmaster Cho was dispatched to Brazil where he is considered the Pioneer and Father of Taekwon-Do in that country. Grandmaster Cho was inducted into the Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame for his efforts in 2007 at a ceremony in New Jersey, USA. He now resides in the Los Angles area and is involved with the Taekwon-Do Pioneers Council. Grandmaster Kong Yong Il was a skilled fighter in Taekwon-Do. He achieved the non-commissioned officer rank of Sergeant in the Korean Army. He was a member of the ITF 1973 world tour that traveled to numerous countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Far East. In Egypt alone, some 100,000 were estimated to view the demonstration. New ITF branches were established there due to the successful efforts of the team. This legendary team held challenge matches throughout and legend has it that Sgt. Kong was undefeated in 127 matches. He later moved to the United States. He was inducted into the Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame for his efforts in 2007. He is currently involved with the World Taekwon-Do Alliance after being the first president of the International Chang Hon Taekwon-Do Federation.

I.T.F

There is a huge problem with the martial arts. This problem, to be plain, is the result of lowered intelligence. And this problem can, if not addressed, result in the lowered intelligence of the practitioners. Having stepped in front of the firing squad, let me say that I believe that the martial arts are the greatest invention since anything. Done with the right disposition, they result in high levels of discipline, increased morality, and a calm viewpoint of life that reassures society across the board. And, not to be less than truthful, they kick butt! Now, having properly protected myself against the occasionally brain challenged, let me describe that huge problem. The problem is one of power and authority. Simply, once one is put in charge in the martial arts, one tends to squash anyone who threatens that power. You've all heard the fellow in the ring who threatens to knock the head off his opponent with an axe kick just because he really don’t like him. This is the heart of spectacle, this is the gladiator gone looney tunes, creating his own ratings, causing the crowd to cheer for him, inciting to riot all in the interests of a corporate deal. This is the lesson of classrooms such as the WCW, yet brought into all other facets of sport where a dollar is to be made. Now, once the less than intelligent soul becomes 'champion of the world,' he continues his career through seminars, and even his own chain of schools. And in this career he continues his world class example with bad morals, manners and English. Any student who dares to question is apt to get his answer in headlocks and body slams, and not through the scientific reasoning of pulleys and fulcrums.

Now, thank the stars, this is not all instructors, many instructors are intelligent, joyous beings. But, what do we do about the, for lack of a better word, louts? I mean, I don't think the various sporting commissions will require a sixth grade education as necessary for a fellow who has dynamite in his fists. Well, the answer lies in education, but not necessarily of the world champion. The answer lies in educating the masses. And this answer is possible through the education of the school systems. Yes, it is about time to open a can of whup ass, apply a head popping leg scissors to, wrench the arm right out of the socket of...boards of education everywhere. Time to take them teacher types out and slap them in the heads with their own books. You want to fix the martial arts, start earlier, and pick the right fellow to pick on, next time your kid comes home with an F, head down to the local teacher store, and take a good helping of knuckle knocking, slobber knocking common sense, and convince them idiots that they better not to fail yer kid, and that’s final!

The problem is some in the Martial Arts use position and rank to bully and undermine others - this is a fact in all arts. I.T.F. Tae Kwon Do is political and has some real problems in it - individuals who believe they can just disregard others feelings and, if some thing is created that threatens their existence, they panic and do whatever they can to harm the creators instead of sitting back and saying “Oh well, competition is healthy”. Guess that’s where you are referring to brainless idiots damaging the arts. Good write up once again by this author though..... chuckle

Following on from the last issue and the ‘Respecting our Masters’ article, I decided to flip the coin this time and put forward the argument for those that do not respect the Masters in the same way many of us do. I am sure this article will upset some (especially those holding Master grades, who this article really points to), but try to remember this is an opinion of many I have met in Martial Arts in general, let alone Tae Kwon Do. I.T.F. Tae Kwon Do is a fantastic Martial Art but, like most arts, it really has some problems in it that only ruin it for the rest of us. You only have to look at the fact of us having three I.T.F.’s nowadays, which simply is not good for any of them. Remember when you started? I do (25 years ago) and, to be honest, I have seen many changes that have done good and bad things for our art. Masters are those individuals that have done 30+ years of their life but, over the last decade, we have seen individuals gain Master grades that fall short of the Master quality. Yes, they may have done the years (but, in some cases, may have not) but their understanding of the art and people skills suck! “What is a bad Master then?”, I hear you ask. Well, someone that knows his chosen art but lacks the true skills of a Master, meaning they have not reached the correct maturity level yet. Masters should know their chosen art inside out, be a person with knowledge who is humble with his approach to senior and junior ranks, one who knows every time he steps onto the mat he progresses and can learn from white belts and Black Belts and, finally, that learning of the art never stops, regardless of their rank. As a young 12 year old taking up the art, I thought that a Master was a guy like those seen in Kung Fu films - these were people that could kill in one strike, walk on water, put the matrix to shame, even dodge a bullet, then reality struck! Masters cannot walk on water, they may be able to kill with one strike though! I always here colour belts saying ‘I bet he could beat everyone up’ - the fact is, take away the fear of the Master grade and you would probably give him a run for his money. The truth is, if you stop sparring and being active in the art, you lose your timing, reaction, speed and power. The body weakens compared to a guy who does 10 rounds a week, his timing and reaction in sparring will be pretty hot compared to the guy who gave up sparring and only ever practices patterns to move up the ranks. It is a sad fact that as we get older, our bodies get weaker. If we go back 10 years, I would do 20 rounds of sparring a night and still be fit enough to carry on - these days, five two minute rounds and I am knackered! We bruise easily and they don’t heal quickly like when you were young. Make no mistake however, Masters are cautious if you spar them - their blocks are like iron and the wisdom will be to wait and look for that big finish. You, as a younger practitioner, will hit fast and hard and be on your toes, whilst the Master will sit back, wait and look for the counter that will stop you in your tracks. Unlike the myths of Martial Arts, Master are not super human, as they bruise and bleed like all of us.

There are some great Masters out there that can spar and ‘walk the walk’ but, sadly, more stop training at Master level due to work commitments or injuries they have sustained in their lives. I have witnessed first hand Masters swearing at officials at tournaments due to them not understanding the rules, or just because the result went against their students - is this how a true Master should act? I have had many dealing with Masters over the years, even invited a few to my schools to teach - some I have been in awe of and some I have almost fallen asleep due to their lack of understanding which shows after about 30 minutes on the floor (which is often camouflaged by misdirected praise of the quality of my members). I have trained under Grand Master Rhee on a number of seminars and he was fantastic - his understanding of the art is second to none and he has some great Masters around him who are also the real deal. At General Choi’s seminar in 1999, I felt he was rude and blunt but, as the creator, he was entitled to feel angry - only after joining the I.T.F. did I realise his opinion was that we were not doing his art the way it should be taught, therefore we were faking his style. The opinion is a Master is invincible and understands the meaning of ‘Do’, but in reality they are like everyone they can be hot headed as they are human, some smoke and drink (which to me is wrong but, again, they are human), they feel pain like all of us, they grieve like all of us and most good ones understand life is is a beach. A few need educating (but only a few!). All said and done however, they as Masters are on a pedestal, so they MUST watch their conduct inside and out of the do-jangs and understand that when they act wrongly towards others, they will be held accountable. In Martial Arts terms, few make it to such a high grade (kinda like few make it to celebrity status in Hollywood) but when they do, their actions have to change or they will be slaughtered by the media. So Sirs, next time you find yourself boiling over in a situation, think hard as walking away and keeping your temper will mean you maintain respect from your juniors in our art - losing control only makes the juniors see you for what you are.

Early in the morning on 7th March (5.30am - aarrggh!), Chris was clattering around the house. I suddenly thought “Oh my god, yet another year has gone by - seven years we have hosted these events and I am still not used to these early starts”. God, I hate getting up early! The van had been packed by Chris and the girls on Friday. Must be nice for the U.K.-L.T.S.I. members just to turn up, not having to load and unload the vans the night before! Never mind, we do it for the U.K.-L.T.S.I. and all those attending on the day.

Battle at the VII South East Opens The 7th South East U.K.-L.T.S.I. / U.K.T.U. Opens 2010 was possibly one of the most nerve racking tournaments we had ever hosted. It made history for us in a way, as the odds were stacked against us from the start - this would be a testing tournament, as we were not sure of the backing we would get from past attendees after the negative character assassination that our very own Chairman faced from our ex I.T.F. body in 2009 (this resulted in us making the choice to leave them in October 2009, thankfully). Chris, the Chairman of the group and also the editor of this magazine has many supporters (and a few enemies!) across the U.K. - this is because he is someone that will not back down to those that bully juniors, a man not scared to confront those in power and question their actions, hence why we are proud to have him as our leader. We were very concerned after our worst year since the U.K.- L.T.S.I. arrived in the U.K.. When the troubles hit in 2009, Chris even offered his resignation as Chairman but it was declined by the Executive. In January, Chris said he would personally finance the event from start to finish and take the risk, but he was refused by the group as we believed in his vision - his offer was declined, resulting in him pulling off an event in March which would make U.K.-L.T.S.I. history. With 240 attendees in a recession, we sent a message to those against us, making them realise you can’t keep a good dog down. Here’s how things panned out!

The exodus began as soon as we arrived at the complex. Chris was delegating and, as usual, working hard to get the arena set up by 8am (makes me laugh as he is like Superman on these days!). At 7.30am, the groups Black Belts and Instructors started to arrive. I was busy setting up the canteen with my mum, as this is the area we look after for the day. We had a good chuckle at Chris’ expense at one point, as he was laying down on the job, or so it looked - in fact, he was plugging in an extension lead, but it looked funny the way he was doing it! Many usual clubs attended the event like U.C.T., S.T.A., U.K.-L.T.S.I., I.T.U.K., Learn T.K.D., Harris T.K.D., Rayners Lane, just to mention a few - nearly all these clubs were on site to assist in the set up, which made the event run smoothly. The arena was ready by 8.30am and the umpires meeting was underway. Stuart Smith, Chris’ support system on these days, took over the rings and informed all visiting Instructors of their expectations as umpires for the day. Rings were assigned to 4th Degrees and above, meaning five rings would be run on the day. By 9am, the rings were working and the junior championships were well underway. Mum and I had a birds eye view of the event (when spectators were not in the way!) and what transpired was fantastic. The skill of the children five years and over was a real credit to all coaches on site. The pattern event was heating up with D. Doran (Hemel U.K.-L.T.S.I.) following in his sisters footsteps and securing a gold. Some juniors were not as good as others but, overall, standards were good across the board. The divisions were well covered - in some cases, some of the younger children were giving away six years. That being said, the score system we use is possibly one of the best, as students don’t just get eliminated, it all goes down to scores whether they make it into the next round. I think the scoring is 1, 2 or 3 is a poor pattern, 4, 5 or 6 is an average pattern and 7, 8 or 9 is good to excellent. Rayners Lane junior E.K. Boston won a gold in patterns, beating off all opposition and proving age means nothing when it comes to learning the art.

Also, club mate N. Vagama beat all in the category, taking another gold for Rayners Lane. I glanced across the arena to see many of Chris’ juniors on the floor doing their stuff. A. Buckley had scored the first silver of the day for St. Albans, making light work of all his opponents apart from U.K.-L.T.S.I. member D. Doran who beat him to the post. Next came the sparring - Hemel Hempstead were to make their mark in four divisions, both junior and adult, as brother and sister from the Adio family stamped their authority and won two golds in two different divisions. Not to be outdone, two other club mates D. Doran and D. Britten also secured two golds in sparring. Another group who showed their skills on the day was the ‘Spirit T.K.D. Academies’. L. Costa, P. Tynan, A. O’Kelly, D. Smith and L. Latham all secured golds in sparring, proving that their group is full of quality fighters. Aldershot Tae Kwon Do (aka ‘Learn TKD’) also flexed their muscles and won a number of divisions - as usual, they tend to be good at all elements of the art, where some just excel at sparring. S. Jurukan, J. Webster, D. Richardson, C. Green and N. Duffy all secured golds from their events. It is a hard task to state who out of the above are over 13’s, so I have added all the students on to one list. The final event for juniors under 12’s was destruction. F. Adio and E. Estole both did well to beat off the opposition and secure their golds. The morning finished with a break, then we swiftly moved on to the 13’s+ tournament. This started with a display dedicated to Grand Master Tran of the I.T.F. Vienna group.

The students were lined up and sat down, then the lights were switched off leaving the arena in complete darkness. At this point, a display of photos lit up the hall - alongside it was a very fitting song ‘everybody hurts’. The display lasted about 10 minutes - on the screen were images of the latest casualty of the Haiti earthquake, a great man called Grand Master Tran, President of the I.T.F. Vienna group. I had spoken to Chris about his plans at this event, as I knew he was planning something special. It turned out great. At the end of the display, the lights went on and a one minute silence was called. Looking around, some of those on the floor were very emotional - you could see it in their body language. One Instructor approached Chris after and said “Sir, I just wanted to thank you and your organisation for this tribute - it means a lot”. Chris said “We are all part of the same family, it was our gift to all those in attendance from his group”. I think it made Chris’ day that this coach took the time to thank him for creating it. On to the afternoon, it started with a team pattern challenge. Both Stuart and Chris had made sure their members were committed to this as, since the problems of last year, there has been a different approach from all Instructors in the group and a much more serious attitude. This showed when Chris’ Excel T.K.D. Team performed, making all realise they were there to win gold and nothing else. If you don’t believe me, visit www.uk-ltsi.com to see the video of the event! Sparring of the U.K.-L.T.S.I. members is more aggressive now, as it seems the gloves are off in all areas.

Personally, I think it was disgraceful what happened to Chris in 2009 but, then again, I think all it has done is unleashed an untamed animal in him! He was known as a taskmaster before, but now he is much more focused and determined. He has vowed that, one day, he will get the last laugh on those responsible - knowing him for 15 years now, you can bet someone is going to suffer! In the afternoon, there was some fantastic patterns and Black Belt sparring matches. Andrew Smith and Stephen Townshend, two of the top under 18 competitors of the U.K.-L.T.S.I., fought hard giving a real crowd pleaser. Calvin Thomas and Adam Gardner, heavyweights, went toe to toe in a great fight too. Looking over at ring five (centre stage), Vicky Smith and Lyndsey Renolds were sparring, which was a very hard fight indeed. Another hot fighter coming out of the U.K.-L.T.S.I. is Callum Jordan - his first bout as a new Black Belt would see him meet Ben Dale. This was a wake up call but, all said and done, it was good to see Callum give a good fight against a very talented England junior I.T.F. fighter. There were many great fighters on the day, too many to mention here. All said and done, it was a great event enjoyed by all. We thank all members and supporters for making it a success, especially the volunteers who gave up their time to support us in our hour of need. Our next event is the 2010 Invitationals in October. We asked a number of Instructors and members of Grand Master Trans group what would be the best way to let others know about him - some said a write up on his life, some said just let people know of his demise but, Naturally, we don’t want focus on that because he had achieved a lot in his time. We feel it is better if we highlight his achievements to date. We researched and decided we would run an official article from the I.T.F. Vienna group site, so all rights are theirs

Grand Master Trân Triêu Quân is a Canadian citizen who was born in Vietnam, where he started studying the martial art of Taekwon-Do when he was twelve years old. Five years later, he started a Taekwon-Do school to teach this martial art within the education system of the city of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). He moved to Canada in 1970 to study engineering at Laval University in Quebec City. There he also set up Taekwon-Do schools, the first such schools in Eastern Canada. After receiving his engineering degree, he chose to make his permanent home in Canada. His professional career: Grand Master Trân started a consulting firm, Norbati Consultants Trân & Associates, which specializes in building standards and project management for the construction sector. Norbati has worked on projects in Canada and abroad and has developed an innovative concept for the modernization and optimization of the building construction sector in developing countries. 1.

Starting in 1979 and for more than 20 years, Grand Master Trân Triêu Quân worked closely with General Choi Hong Hi, assisting him in the development of the ITF and conducting seminars in countries around the world. In 1982, Grand Master Trân published Cessez d’avoir peur (“Don’t be afraid”), a practical guide with an innovative approach to self-defense using simple, easy-to-learn techniques. In 1984, after leading the Canadian Taekwon-Do team to a first-place overall win at the World Championship held in Glasgow (Scotland), he was named Coach of the Year at the athletic awards dinner for all sports in the Quebec City region. From 1985 to 1989, Grand Master Trân served two terms as president of the Canadian Taekwon-Do international Federation. In 1986, the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City proclaimed Grand Master Trân one of their “Productive Citizens”. In 1990, he received the “Best Event of the Year” award from the City of Montreal (Canada) for organizing the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championship in that city. In 1997, the Trân family were given the title of “Family of the Year” for the Quebec City region and, he was named “Personality of the Year” by the 6,000 members of the regional professional association of engineers in Quebec. From 2001 to 2003, Grand Master Trân was president of the Pan-Am Taekwon-Do Federation. At the 2003 Congress of the International Taekwon-Do Federation in Warsaw (Poland), Grand Master Trân was elected President. He thus became the successor to the Founder of Taekwon-Do, the late General Choi Hong Hi. Grand Master Trân is very proud of the vision he and his team have implemented for the ITF since they were first elected in 2003. This vision is that Taekwon-Do must be fully developed in all four facets: Taekwon-Do is a sport and a martial art, but also a way of life and a tool for social development. The members of the ITF Board of Directors, under the leadership of Grand Master Trân, have kept this vision in mind while making changes in structure and administration to make the organization more efficient and offer better services to ITF members. Since 2003 the ITF team has completely updated the legal framework for the ITF. This includes the revision of the Constitution and By-Law as well as the development of official policies and procedures. These documents are well written and easy to enforce. They are based on an efficient business-like approach, inspired by his professional experience. After General Choi Hong Hi’s death, there were conflicting claims by various groups, each claiming to be the legitimate leaders of the ITF. Therefore, the direction team has worked hard to clarify the legal status of the ITF and to bring harmony among the associations and members of the ITF.

Under Grand Master Trân’s leadership, the ITF structure has become a more efficient and democratic operation. The technical aspect and the administration of the ITF now work independently of each other. This formula has been very successful in terms of efficiency and productivity. As a result, membership has increased significantly. There have been positive repercussions on the standardization of ITF Taekwon-Do techniques around the world, especially since the new structure was introduced for the International Instructor Courses. Since Grand Master Trân’s election as President, the ITF has become more service oriented than ever. It has set as its first priority to increase the number and the quality of the services offered to ITF associations, clubs, and individual members. There is more emphasis on consultation with the members, to be able to create innovative services to suit their needs. Working with a team of experts, Grand Master Trân has developed the Basic Program for Teaching the Do, the ITF philosophy. The ITF is the only international Taekwon-Do federation to offer such a program. This program is a work in progress, and Grand Master Trân takes a lot of pride in this innovative program. At various time Grand Master Trân has collaborated with experts in different academic fields at Laval University to do scientific research on various subjects such as the Theory of Power in Taekwon-Do, intervention techniques to help troubled young people, and the value of certain teaching methods. Since he was elected President of ITF, Grand Master Trân has traveled to an average of twenty countries each year, putting into practice his belief that to be a good leader one needs to be close to all the members. For 2006-2007, the local Chamber of Commerce, the Ministry of Immigration of the Province of Quebec, and the City of Quebec proclaimed Grand Master Trân an «Immigrant of the World». Grand Master Trân was Chairman of the Organizing committee of the ITF 9th Junior and 15th Senior World Championship in Quebec City, Canada. It was the first time in the ITF history that both junior and senior world championships were held together. Grand Master Trân was been re-elected for a second mandate for 4 year-term as President of the ITF at the 16th Congress of ITF on June 1st, 2007 in Quebec City (Canada). In December 2008, Grand Master Trân was promoted to 9th degree by Grand Master Van Binh, Chairman of the ITF Masters Promotion Committee. Grand Master Trân Triêu Quân was a leader and a builder. He worked very hard to further the best interests of the ITF and its members. He hoped that leaders of other organizations would be inspired by his creativity and his dedication and work in harmony to build a better world.

Sadly, in January 2010, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time resulting in his untimely death. Some have stated yet again another great man had fallen, one that it is almost impossible for anyone to ever fill his footsteps.

He basically operated at RAF Gaydon, 1992. whose gym he used as the weekend training base so every"When I was a kiddy there was body could travel to a central base. Master Rhee states that he is not than follow my father in Judo, I wanted to keep a little slimmer bothered about the names of the bodies, what concerns him is figure than Judo, allowed." how Taekwon-do can be unified or united so it can develop. Master Rhee started with Taekwon-do when he did his military When he first came to this part of the world no one knew what national service. All soldiers had to learn Taekwon-do, it was Taekwon-do was and even during the last decade he got part of their training. After basic training people with high IQs asked by an interviewer and reporters questions like "is Taekwere sent to the signals corps. The other top people had an opwon-do the name of a race horse?" That does not happen now tion of what they would like to do. Master Rhee's choice was to as many more people know about Taekwon-do. He agrees that study Taekwon-do which surprised his superiors, and he was the '88 Olympics has done a lot of good for the publicity of asked if that was really what he wanted to do, because at that Taekwon-do and the '92 Barcelona Olympics exhibition will time military food was very poor and soldiers were always hunalso help with the publicity. Master Rhee wants to see Taekgry; almost a starving situation, but still when he was offered won-do unified so it can have credibility as it spreads so everyother options he said he wanted to do Taekwon-do. Master one has to think about it, and put the politics and egos away, in Rhee stated: "I do not regret it, it was tough, but I continued to order for this to happen for the good of Taekwon-do and everydo Taekwon-do." one involved in it. I then asked Master Rhee about what training devices, like the When he first arrived karate was leg stretchers we have today, they had available to them. quite well known, and Master "Taekwon-do originated from Korea, so Korean people and KoRhee was introduced to the BKrean living systems and environments were a little bit different. So when I start teaching Royal Air Force or Police CaControl Commission. because they are so small and not well known. He was immediately told that they could not do that because they were different countries. So Master Rhee got his point across very well that all martial arts cannot just be lumped together under the heading of Karate. He had to explain about Taekwon-do and that it was invented by General Choi Hong Hi, so officially the name had been given on 1lth April, 1955. Also that all the techniques, terminology, system and rules are different and the culture it comes from. Master Rhee stated that if they wanted him to join they had to open the door a bit wider than Karate. He could not join under the name of karate, but he could under the term martial arts. I then asked Master Rhee were he saw the future of Taekwondo. He answered by saying that he is only a pioneering master. General Choi was the founder and he had asked General Choi on several occasions which way he favoured the development of Taekwon-do but as yet had not had a definite answer. Whatever General Choi decides he, Master Rhee, will support. Master Rhee's own personal view is that he is proud of Taekwon-do as a self discipline, a self challenge, but these days half the students studying Taekwon-do in Great Britain are juniors (under 18s) and in some schools it is over half. So you have to let these "children" have their enjoyment so you have to have a competition/tournament side to Taekwon-do. The important thing is, though, not to let it take over Taekwon-do, but to run along side the traditional part of Taekwon-do, so it complements it. Master Rhee, though, is not totally satisfied with the safety of the tournament rules, because every tournament he goes to he does not feel comfortable. As an example of this Master Rhee said that boxing has been an Olympic sport for many years, but there are still serious injuries (and even fatalities) in the sport which is against the principle of the games, and this happens when a boxer is only using his fists wearing gloves. So what can happen when you can use your legs as well, which are bigger and longer than your arms and hands. With the training in Taekwon-do your legs can be two or three times more devastating than hand techniques. So Master Rhee cannot see how Taekwon-do -can be accepted as an Olympic sport. With boxers only using their fists and wearing head guards, doing internal damage, what damage will legs twice or three times more powerful do. So Master Rhee feels that a lot more research and development has to go into discovering how Taekwon-do can be a competitive sport. One of the ways Master Rhee feels that the competitive side of Taekwon-do could go, which would include something like a gymnastics floor exercise and a power gauge, and with sparring the people wearing body protectors with some sort of touch sensors like those used in fencing, but without the wire attracted, because fencers only go back and forward unlike Taekwon-do competitors. From this base you can then state what techniques are allowed and what areas score.

So as to the way Taekwon-do will go Master Rhee says: "Everyone has to survey and listen as to which way is the best way to develop and benefit and be a credit to Taekwon-do." Master Rhee is now a grandfather and he now plays golf. One thing he regrets is that he did not take up golf earlier, because golf is a very disciplined sport. He plays not to beat anybody but the course and to improve his handicap. Master Rhee finds that golf is like Taekwon-do; there is always something to achieve. It is a self discipline, a self challenge.

On Sunday 7th March, I headed down to the Marlborough School Sports Complex as Chris and his team were hosting the 7th South East Tae Kwon Do Opens. I was driving the van with the 250 mats and loads of other stuff on board - once again, I would be working the doors for Chris after. At 12 noon, we were informed that a display would be shown on the huge screen, so all the lights were going to be turned off. Now, I personally don’t know much about Tae Kwon Do, apart from you kick and punch hard and you are extremely fit as the lights went off, I looked over the arena and saw floods of students sitting on the floor watching a very powerful display, to say the least. As the film started, music started too which was ‘Everybody Hurts’. A number of pictures were shown of a man called Grand Master Tran, but the wording on the display was really a tear jerker. At the end of the film, the lights were turned on - a one minute silence was held, the students done a silent bow then an applause. I asked Chris after if the man was his Master - he replied “No, I have never met him but we have over 50 I.T.F. Tran Quan members here, so we done the display out of respect for them. He is a Tae Kwon Do family member, so it affects all parts of the Tae Kwon Do community”. I was shocked, as Chris is my cousin - it was refreshing to know he has matured with life and his chosen art. I congratulate him and his team on taking the initiative to show respect for others at their main event. Well done all!

I am an active Tae Kwon Do’ist of about six years now, so my joining the I.T.F. was after the loss of the arts founder. I have seen students gain their Black Belts at our club over the years, then weasel their way into opening clubs by pledging full support for the group. As the Instructor only wants to spread Tae Kwon Do, they agree they can open up but, within a year, they leave saying they are leaving the I.T.F. due to politics. Sorry if this sounds like I am ranting, but I am! These same people have about as much skill and true understanding as a slug - their teaching standards are poor, unlike the school they came from. One guy left us about 9 months back - he took a couple of students who, again, had about as much skill as him. Not really a problem, but recently I visited his site only to see nothing has changed - he wears an I.T.F. suit, proclaims to be I.T.F., but is not I.T.F. in any way, shape or form. In fact, he grades his own students and issues certificates with no professional standards, just a printed peace of rubbish. He stated to many of us he only likes teaching - he makes out he has many members and that he teaches quality. Sorry, but this type of rubbish should be stopped from robbing the art. We pay our money as degree members, yet no one is prepared to make these types of students remove the I.T.F. logos etc. In turn, this means they are fooling the public - they are not I.T.F., so why advertise they are? They are crooks, that’s why. I spoke to my groups senior Examiner and asked him why is it that these types of Instructors can get away with it - he stated that it is too late for the I.T.F.’s to do anything now, as there are many clubs that do it and many companies that reproduce the logo, so it is not an isolated problem I am witnessing. So, to these people, I personally think you should be ashamed of yourselves and learn some integrity. You don’t want to pay in to the I.T.F.’s pot, so don’t wear the logos and stop lying to your members.

Readers memories section The General visit 1999: I was 26 years old and a qualified 3rd Dan under a non I.T.F. group based in the U.K. We were at the Latchmere Leisure Centre, awaiting the founder of the I.T.F. - suddenly, a voice shouts “Line up!”. Once lined up, we were instructed to turn and face the door - the doors open and in walks our Executive board. Behind them is a small man, soon to be announced as the great founder of the I.T.F., General Choi Hong Hi. After a rather long clapping session, he takes to the floor and starts to speak. I was standing in awe when, all of a sudden, I hear a whacking thud on the floor! Blimey, the guy next to me was so overwhelmed, he had gone and fainted flat on his face. The Chairman shouts “Move that man off the floor”. My jaw fell to the ground in amazement, as he was moved to the side by a number of the Black Belts so proceeding could carry on. What, no “Is he ok?”. That’s the power of money speaking, time is money and no one was going to stop this seminar. He was fine, by the way! On to the seminar, the General moved through the patterns. Not too impressed by what he was seeing, at one point we were told to form a half circle where students were asked to stand up and demonstrate their acquired skills learnt to date. I sat at the back of the hoards of practitioners on the floor, thinking he will never see me (look, I am invisible!) I sat as students were torn limb from limb by the General, as they performed the patterns - look no sign wave, he would say, no power... After a few patterns, we reached Yul-Gok. I sat right at the back, so no one could see me. The General says “Who will perform this pattern?”. “Not me”, I mutter. He raised his arm and pointed right at me - the floor cleared, leaving nothing between me and him. I slowly got to my feet, wishing the Starship Enterprise would beam me up. Blimey, has he got super hearing? I approached him and Mr. A. Read, 5th Degree, says “Sir wants you to perform Yul Gok” Yes Sir, I say. I come to attention and start performing the pattern. “STOP!” I hear him call. I nearly died on the spot..... “Why do you stop your movements?” “Umm”..... I replied... Quickly recovering, saying “Pardon Sir?”, he repeats “Why do you stop between each move? A river never stops flowing, so why do you?”... “I was taught that way”, I mutter. “NO! You must do it my way” he replies. He MUST have super hearing! I proceed to perform the pattern start to finish - he grabs my arm and says “You are technically good, but you would be better if you learn my way!”. Blimey, you could have blown me down with a feather - I was shaking like a leaf with nerves. Needless to say, I investigated the I.T.F. way over the next 18 months, finally deciding to leave the organisation I was with and try and learn his way. The rest, as they say, is history....

1918 -2002 ‘His legacy continues through all of our efforts’

As a avid wrestling fan for over 15 years now (well, we all have our weaknesses!), I was watching my usual dose of W.W.E. on a Friday night when they announced a guy called Antonio Inoki would be inducted into the 2010 Hall of Fame. I immediately set out doing research on him, only to find out that it is said he and Muhammad Ali staged the worlds first ever MMA fight in 1976. As I started to delve further into the history of this great man, I was amazed at his achievements - so much so, I decided I would do a special feature on his amazing career in our magazine. If you want to read about his achievements, you can visit these two great sites. Enjoy! Best regards, Chris. http://www.stripes.com/photoday/inoki/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Inoki#cite_note-9

Muhammad Ali makes a face at his next opponent, wrestler Antonio Inoki, during a luncheon at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. In the background is Jhoon Rhee, a Korean Tae Kwon Do expert who was said to be teaching karate to Ali in preparation for the exhibition event that would be called "unusual" by the more generous and "a farce" by others.

Inoki was born in an affluent family in Yokohama in 1943. He was the sixth son and the second youngest of the seven boys and four girls. His father, Sajiro Inoki, a businessman and politician, died when Kanji was five years old. Inoki entered the Higashidai Grade School. Inoki was taught karate by an older brother while in 6th grade. By the time he was in 7th grade at Terao Junior High School, he was 180 centimeters tall and joined the basketball team. He later quit and joined a track and field club as a shot putter. He eventually won the championship at the Yokohama Junior High School track and field competition. The family fell on hard times in the post-war years, and in 1957, the 14 year-old Inoki immigrated to Brazil with his grandfather, mother and brothers. His grandfather died during the journey to Brazil. Inoki won regional championships in Brazil in the shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw, and finally the All Brazilian championships in the shot put and discus.[5] Japan Wrestling Association (1960–1966) Inoki met Rikidozan at the age of 17. He went back to Japan for the Japanese Wrestling Association (JWA) as Rikidozan's disciple. One of his dojo classmates was Giant Baba. After Rikidozan's death, Inoki worked under the taller Baba's shadow until he joined the original Tokyo Pro Wrestling in 1966. Tokyo Pro Wrestling (1966–1967) After wrestling a long excursion in the United States, Inoki found a new home in Tokyo Pro Wrestling. While there, Inoki became their biggest star. Unfortunately, the company folded in 1967, due to turmoil behind the scenes. Japan Wrestling Association (1967–1971) Returning to JWA in late 1967, he was made Baba's partner and the two dominated the tag team ranks as the "B-I Cannon", winning the NWA International tag team belts four times.

Wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino tells a story about Inoki trying to "shoot" on him during a tag match in Osaka to build his reputation against the then-world champ. Bruno powered out of the hold, pounded Inoki unmercifully and threw him out of the ring. Inoki refused to re-enter the ring with Sammartino and tagged in Baba to finish the match. New Japan Pro Wrestling (1972–1994) Fired from JWA in late 1971 for planning a takeover of the promotion, Inoki founded New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1972. His first match as a New Japan wrestler was against Karl Gotch. In 1995 the Japanese and Korean governments came together to hold a two-day wrestling festival for peace in Pyongyang, North Korea. The event drew 150,000 and 190,000 fans respectively to May Day Stadium. The main event saw the only match between Inoki and Ric Flair with Inoki coming out on top. Days before this event, Inoki and the Korean press went to the grave and birthplace of Rikidozan and paid tribute to him. On November 30, 1979, Inoki defeated WWF Champion Bob Backlund in Tokushima, Japan to win the title. Backlund then won a re-match on December 6. However, WWF president Hisashi Shinma declared the re-match a no-contest due to interference from Tiger Jeet Singh, and Inoki remained Champion. Inoki refused the title on the same day and it was declared vacant. Backlund later defeated Bobby Duncum in a Texas Death match to regain the title on December 12. As Inoki refused the title his reign is not included nor is it recognized by WWE in its official history and Backlund is recognized as having one reign from 1978–1983. Final countdown and retirement (1994–present) Inoki's retirement from professional wrestling matches came with the staging of the "Final Countdown" series between 1994 and 1998. This was a special series in which Inoki re-lived some of his mixed martial arts matches under professional wrestling rules, as well as rematches of some of his most well known wrestling matches. Inoki faced Don Frye in the final match of his professional wrestling career. Culminating in 2006, Inoki's influence within New Japan declined.

An example of this has been the purchase of his image by YUKE's, who in 2005 purchased his controlling 51.5% stock in New Japan. As a result New Japan is now able to control Inoki's appearances and the use of his image. Inoki began a new promotion in 2007 called Inoki Genome Federation that competes with New Japan. On February 1, 2010, World Wrestling Entertainment announced on its Japanese website that Inoki would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2010. On February 9, WWE held a press conference in Tokyo, Japan to officially announce the induction, making him the first ever Japanese person to receive the induction. Inoki was presented with a Hall of Fame certificate by WWE's Ed Wells and stated that he will be attending the WrestleMania XXVI weekend festivities, which will see him officially inducted.

Inoki was amongst the group of professional wrestlers who were tutored in the art of hooking and shooting by the professional wrestler Karl Gotch. Inoki then went on to stage a series of mixed martial arts matches against champions from numerous other disciplines of martial arts. Inoki named his method of fighting "strong style". This method of wrestling (which was taught to Inoki by Gotch) borrowed heavily from professional wrestling's original catch wrestling roots. It is one of the most important influences of modern shoot wrestling. Inoki was a pioneer of mixed martial arts and faced many opponents from all dominant disciplines of combat from various parts of the world, such as Akram Pahalwan in Pakistan, Willie Williams of Kyokushin Karate, Olympic judo gold medalist Willem Ruska and WBA and WBC World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali. Though many of Inoki's matches were dismissed by the skeptics as worked, there has been little or no proof at all to suggest the validity of the worked theory and Inoki's mixed martial arts opponents have never stated that the matches were "fake". Most of the skepticism arose from the fact that Inoki was a professional wrestler, which automatically led to an assumption that the matches might have been worked. The worked theory also arises from Inoki's June 26, 1976 match in Tokyo with Muhammad Ali. Inoki initially promised Ali a worked match to get him to fight in Japan, but when the deal materialized Ali's camp feared that Inoki would turn the fight into a shoot, which many believe was Inoki's intention. Ali visited a professional wrestling match involving Inoki and witnessed Inoki's grappling ability.

The rules of the match were announced several months in advance. Two days before the match, however, several new rules were added which severely limited the moves that each man could perform. A rule change that had a major outcome on this match was that Inoki could only throw a kick if one of his knees was on the ground. In the match, Ali landed a total of six punches to Inoki, and Inoki kept to his back in a defensive position almost the full duration of the match of 15 rounds, hitting Ali with a low kick repeatedly. The bout ended in a draw, 3-3. Ali left without a press conference and suffered damage to his legs as a result of Inoki's repeated leg kicks. Inoki organizes Mixed Martial Arts events like "NJPW Ultimate Crush" and "Jungle Fight", showing traditional professional wrestling matches and mixed martial arts matches on the same card. Some of the major attractions of these events involve the best of NJPW against world renowned fighters in mixed martial arts matches. Inoki vs Renzo Gracie was a professional wrestling match that took place at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2000 against mixed martial artist Renzo Gracie. Inoki was the ambassador for the International Fight League's Tokyo entry before that promotion's demise. Inoki is one of the founders of Kansuiryu Karate.

Inoki was married to actress Mitsuko Baisho from 1971 to 1987. Initially the wedding was going to be paid by JWA, but JWA fired him in late 1971, so Inoki had to form NJPW to keep feeding his new family. Inoki and Baisho have a daughter, Hiroko (who uses her father's surname). Hiroko is married to Simon Inoki, who in 2005 was named President of NJPW. They are divorced now. Inoki appeared in the movie, The Bad News Bears Go To Japan, as a wrestler. He had the starring role in the film Acacia directed by Jinsei Tsuji. During one visit to a school in the 1980s, Inoki was punched twice by a student. Inoki slapped the student across the face. The student, who later turned out to be an Inoki fan, then thanked Inoki for the slap. The incident became very famous as the then live clip of the binta (slap in the face) was shown many times on Japanese television. Now various celebrities and even common people in Japan ask Inoki to slap them to install courage or even as some sort of strange blessing. The slap's name is the "Fighting Spirit (or Tokon) Slap." ( ) In 1989, Inoki established the Sports and Peace Party ( ). He was elected to the House of Councillors of the National Diet of Japan. He continued to wrestle and promote while serving as a legislator. He served in the Diet until 1995, when he failed to win re-election, after accusations of Yakuza involvement and bribery lead to a decline in his popularity. Inoki met with Saddam Hussein for the release of prisoners from Iraq before the Gulf War. As is the traditional gift for a visiting head-of-state, Saddam gave Inoki a pair of golden swords.

ick Bromell first found that people who burn over 2000 calories per week through exercise

significantly reduce their cardiovascular risks. He then evaluated a number of different types of exercise to see how effective each is in helping the practitioner burn 2000 weekly calories. He and his co-workers grouped the types of exercise into three categories with respect to their effectiveness in burning the minimum calories he found necessary to be of health benefit. The categories were: Best, Fair and Least effective. In the ʻBestʼ Category we find the expected running, jogging, walking, bicycling, cross country skiing/ Snowboarding and swimming. These are the forms of exercise which, at the time of Bromellʼs study, already had strong scientific support. Along with these types of exercise, Nick Bromellʼs study also found that martial arts rated in the ʻBestʼ exercise category for pulmonarycardiovascular health. Taekwon-Do is not only healthy from an exercise standpoint but is the optimum, effective self-defence for the average person at just about any age level. Nick Bromell found that practicing Taekwon-Do for one hour on each of three different days per week causes the body to burn over 2000 calories each week.
