Dear Planner, As many of you know, shopping is the #1 activity for motorcoach groups. No matter the occasion—a girlfriend getaway, museum tour, hands-on experience, festival, food tour—travelers always want to pick up something special to remember their tour by. But to devote an entire group tour to shopping? Now your groups are really in for a treat.

In this issue, you’ll find the usual big name retail spots (Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and Bloomington’s Mall of America), but the growing trend in shopping these days is small, one-of-a-kind specialty shops; the boutiques offering items found nowhere else in the world. The Midwest is chock-full of quaint little downtown walks featuring all kinds of these unique shopping options. Downtown Overland Park in Kansas, Nebraska’s Grand Island, and Iowa’s Village of East Davenport are some standout options (just to name a few).

Antiquing and consignment shopping are another favorite option among groups! Visit the Beaver Island Toy Museum in Michigan for unique collectibles or browse the vintage clothing racks in downtown Fargo, North Dakota. For the more hands-on group, add a class to your trip! When you think of Branson, you think of showstopping performances, right? Fair enough. But when you think of Silver Dollar City, you should think of one thing: SHOPPING. And not just any ordinary shopping, either. Sure, the words “unique shopping” are ubiquitous in the group travel world, but the shopping in Silver Dollar City is the kind that will leave your group writing home about—that is, if anyone actually wrote home anymore. Let me explain…

Dollar City specialty of entertainment is advanced as craftsmen and artisans tell stories and spin hilarious tales of the past while demonstrating their creations. Perhaps your groups will reminisce a favorite childhood memory or family story as these things spring to life before their very eyes.

First, let’s be clear: Silver Dollar City is not a city. It’s an 1880s theme park credited with putting Branson, Missouri on the map. The award-winning park showcases a colony of 100 resident craftsmen, with rides, attractions, and a showboat, plus world-class festivals thrown in for extra fun. Situated within the natural beauty of the Ozarks—with its rolling hills and Table Rock Lake—Silver Dollar City is a travel destination that is consistently rated a top group tour favorite.

It all started at Marvel Cave, one of the Ozarks’ oldest attractions. A group of miners entered the cave in 1882, hoping to find priceless mineral deposits. Instead of the lead ore they expected, there was nothing but a whole lot of bat guano.

Still, it looked to them that there was a wall of marble in the cave, so one of nature’s greatest wonders was named Marble Cave. The mining company cleaned out the guano, but the “marble” turned out to be limestone. They ceased operation by 1889, but not before planning a town—Marble City—to be constructed on the hilltop near the cave’s entrance. A plat map was recorded at the local courthouse in 1884.

So what exactly is it that makes Silver Dollar City shopping so special? In the words of Pete Herschend, whose parents founded Silver Dollar City, “…it’s the pioneer handicrafts and the men and women who are the crafters.” Many of these artisans live right in the “city,” creating their crafts there, and living a community spirit that made America what it is today.

When Henry Lynch, a Canadian miner, purchased the cave and some land around it in 1889, his plan was to open the cave to sightseers. With the help of his family, he did just that and operations began in 1894. Not exactly profitable at the start, the cave was closed for a period while Lynch raised more capital. It reopened in 1900 and has remained so since, making it the oldest continuously running tourist attraction in

the Ozarks. When Lynch died in 1927, his daughters took over the business and renamed the attraction Marvel Cave.

By the time Hugo and Mary Herschend traveled to the Ozarks with their two sons Jack and Peter in the mid-20th Century, the Lynch sisters were ready to retire. The Herschends fell in love with the beauty of the area and the resourcefulness of her people. Wanting to share that unique heritage and lifestyle, they struck a deal to take over Marvel Cave, a venture continued

by Mary and her sons after Hugo’s death. Mary made vast improvements to the cave, including a railway to pull visitors up from the depths of the cave. With a desire to expand, but also wanting to keep things authentic, Mary began construction on that mining town that was never built. The Herschends’ frontier town began as five shops, a church, a log cabin, and a little street drama reproducing the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys—all on land surrounding the cave. The name was inspired by a promotional idea of giving visitors silver dollars in change. Opening May 1, 1960, Silver Dollar City was soon attracting four times more visitors than Marvel Cave. The family realized they were in the theme park business and started charging admission in 1968.

Today, Silver Dollar City craftsmen are creating handcrafted treasures and vacation souvenirs that can be shipped and waiting for your travelers when they return home.

You’ll find pottery and cut glass and blown glass and candy and leather and soap and furniture and knives and candles and even a blacksmith. The list is long and all is handmade with love the way grandma used to. Entertaining demonstrations are part of the experience and a reason why motorcoaches love to return again and again.

Silver Dollar City continues to grow today and offers an abundance of shade trees and bench seating in a beautifully landscaped setting. Attractions are all handicap accessible and easy to navigate. Adventures can be had from March through December, so start planning your visit. Special prices are available for group planners and professional tour operators.

Why Shopping?

Shopping is the number one activity for groups when traveling. In fact, I’d wager that if your next tour didn’t include some shopping, your group might be a bit bewildered or even disappointed.

From souvenir shopping at the museum gift shop to a more handson experience such as make-your-own pottery at a local ceramics store, the goal is always the same: creating long-lasting memories with your groups. You can even sweeten the deal by coordinating with local CVBs to receive coupons and discounts for your group’s shopping experience.

If the travelers in your tour group are anything like us—and we bet they are—one of the best parts of a motorcoach trip is the opportunity to investigate the local trendy boutiques, small gift stores, shopping malls, outlets, downtown retailers, and specialty shops. Sure, the thrill of a train tour or a relaxing sunset cruise will create memories for your group, but that handcrafted sweater purchased at an artisan’s gallery is a memory your traveler can take home and enjoy for years to come.

The Midwest takes its shopping seriously. Thanks to the cold winters, it’s become a favorite indoor pastime. So with shops in every size, shape, and theme conceivable, it only makes sense for shopping to be a must-do on your itinerary. Here are just a few examples:

Traditional Shopping

THE MALL

Did you know indoor shopping malls have been around in some form or another since the 1950s? Yep! And they only get better—and bigger—with time. Okay, so you’ve heard about Mall of America® in Minnesota, but malls come in all sizes and often have an easy set-up for the shopper. If you’re considering a visit to an outlet mall, you may need to also consider the weather. A traditional indoor shopping mall will keep your group warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Mall of America® (MOA), which opened in 1992, has over 500 retailers and restaurants under one roof, not to mention an aquarium, movie theatre, amusement park, and celebrity appearances throughout the year. And malls aren’t just “mega.” They’re convenient. They bundle recreation, shopping and dining in one area, and they have gloriously large parking lots. You’ll have no trouble parking a bus here!

Unique RETAILERS WITH BIG IDEAS in unique places

If you’re looking for an indoor activity, but you want something more eye-popping than “mall” to add to your itinerary, consider a specialty retailer. Unique specialty boutiques are springing up all over the Midwest. Some host monthly events, while others are open just a few days a week. They may specialize is repurposed furniture (take your group there to get some home décor ideas) or they may specialize in handbags or other accessories. The list is endless and these savvy business owners love to open their doors for groups. And what better way to make your group feel just that more special? Cabela's®— known as the “World's Foremost Outfitter” of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear—has become a destination in itself, with locations around the Midwest, offering lots to see as well as lots to do. How about a 45,000-gallon aquarium? Or a mountain diorama with 75 wild game mounts? Cabela’s® and other retailers around the Midwest play host to a number of unique indoor activities and have built reputations as tourist destinations. Local chambers, CVBs, and retail associations know just what you’re looking for: antique malls, flea markets with live entertainment and dancing, outlet emporiums, craft barns, and multistory artist lofts with gallery space around every corner. At a furniture retailer they always have plenty of chairs and sofas for your group members to take a load off (and get decorating ideas, of course).

STORE-ING UP GREAT MEMORIES

Shopping—it’s something everyone does and everyone knows how to do. As an item on your itinerary, shopping gives your group travel members a chance to move about on their own and to individualize their browsing. It also gives them an opportunity to find that perfect gift for a friend or that perfect takeaway memory of a good trip. You provide the motorcoach, and your tour operator, chamber, CVB and retail association will provide the shops and shopping ideas for your one-of-a-kind itinerary.

Shop Across Missouri This sample itinerary can be customized for any time of year.

Expect the unexpected as you shop your way across southwestern Missouri. With downtown shopping districts, outlet malls, and antique stores galore, your group has countless opportunities to find exactly what they’re looking for. day one JOPLIN, MO Welcome to Joplin! Centrally located at the intersection of Interstates 44 & 49 and the birthplace of Route 66, Joplin has unique shopping and history you won’t find anywhere else.

10:00am – 2:00pm Start off your morning with a shopping trip down Main Street. Take a stroll along this historic avenue and pop in and out of numerous boutiques, confectionaries, donut shops, repurposing stores, hobby shops, and more. Several lunch options, from pizza to sushi, can be found along Main Street as well.

2 – 2:30pm Venture over to City Hall where you’ll find two sensational murals: Joplin at the Turn of the Century and Route 66, Joplin, Missouri.

Through these massive works of art, you’ll get a taste of who Thomas Hart Benton was as an artist and learn how Anthony Benton Gude perceived this city in the mid-20th century.

2:30 – 4:00pm Head east along Route 66 to Springfield, MO. 4 – 6:00pm Welcome to Bass Pro Shops®, also known as “The Granddaddy of All Outdoor Stores.”

As the number one tourist destination in Missouri, this huge sporting goods store attracts over four million families, sportsmen, and outdoor enthusiasts each year. Explore 500,000 square feet of shopping fun, intricate wildlife displays, and other entertainment.

Enjoy dinner at Hemingway’s Blue Water Café, a full-service restaurant inspired by American author and saltwater fishing legend Ernest Hemingway.

6 – 7:00pm Travel south along Highway 65 to Heather Hill Farms in Ozark, MO. Open seven days a week, this specialty shop offers complimentary samples of over 175 varieties of cheese and several varieties of wine. Be sure to call ahead before your visit.

7 – 7:45pm Continue south along Highway 65 to Branson, MO and check into your group-friendly accommodation.

day two BRANSON, MO 7 – 11:45am Enjoy a group breakfast at your hotel or at a downtown Branson café. Then head over to Dick’s Oldtime 5 & 10. Opened nearly 50 years ago in beautiful downtown Branson, this variety store has evolved into a nationally known destination for Branson visitors.

Dick’s provides hours of entertainment for all ages, and features a vast assortment of merchandise with over 50,000 different items and several unique collections.

11:45am – 1:45pm Experience a private customized tour with your group! Main Street Lake Cruises is conveniently located at Branson Landing in historic downtown Branson, and offers sightseeing cruises and scenic tours along Lake Taneycomo. Your groups will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the majestic Ozark Mountains, take in the immense diversity of Branson’s wildlife, and cruise past the Branson Landing waterfront.

SHOP ACROSS MISSOURI

1:45 – 3:45pm It’s show time! You can’t stay in Branson without taking in a few shows with your group. Catch a matinee this afternoon or even a morning performance. Though Branson was originally known as a mecca for country, bluegrass, and gospel music, today this bustling city offers virtually all genres of music and performance styles: rock n’ roll, pop hits from yesterday and today, magicians, acrobats, comedians, variety shows, and seasonal acts for the holidays. In short, there are so many types of shows, that it’s easy to find one (or ten) to suit your group!

3:45 – 5:00pm Head back to your hotel for a bit of rest, and refresh before this evening’s entertainment.

5 – 7:30pm Experience a dinner show like no other at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction. Thirty-two magnificent horses and a cast of top-notch riders will thrill you with daring feats of trick riding and competition.

day three SILVER DOLLAR CITY THEME PARK 8 – 9:30am Miss Molly's Mill Restaurant is Silver Dollar City's first restaurant and one of the few original buildings on Main Street. Your group will enjoy a hearty breakfast featuring all the best southern morning favorites this side of the Mississippi.

9:30am – 3:00pm Spend the day at Silver Dollar City Theme Park! Your group will enjoy exciting rides, attractions, world-class festivals, shopping, and unique dining options throughout the park. Stop and watch over 100 craftsmen entertain and demonstrate their crafts. Spring 2018 marks the arrival of the “World’s Fastest, Steepest & Tallest Spinning Coaster” known as “The Time Traveler.”

3 – 4:30pm Mel's Hard Luck Diner, home of Branson's original singing servers, is a must-stop!

The servers, hosts, cooks, and cashiers are all professional singers, songwriters, and musicians. They offer you a great dining experience seasoned with a song! Ask about the “Climb Every Mountain Ice Cream Avalanche,” served on a bed of 12 scoops of ice cream.

Galena is a small town tucked in the northwest corner of Illinois. Known for its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, Galena offers one-of-a-kind shopping experiences along historic Main Street. Birthplace of Andy Williams Howard Andrew “Andy” Williams was born in Wall Lake, Iowa in 1927 and lived with his grandpa at the top of the hill overlooking the Chicago & North Western Depot at 102 East First Street. This home has been restored to the late 1920s and early 1930s era for your groups to visit. The grounds have been landscaped, a smokehouse re-assembled, and a summer kitchen brought in from the country and converted into a gift shop. And of course there’s the proverbial outhouse! The home is full of memorabilia from the many decades of Andy’s music and television career. Busloads of visitors have enjoyed learning about the Williams family through photos documenting the Williams brothers’ careers and the beautiful restoration of the house.

Chicago & North Western Depot The depot played an important role in the economic growth of Wall Lake as sixteen passenger trains per day stopped here. The restoration of the depot has taken it back to the remodeling completed in 1913.

The depot has another direct connection to Andy Williams, as his father was employed as a mail clerk on the C & N.W. Railroad during Andy’s early years.

Swedish American Museum

SWEDESBURG Visit the Swedish American Museum in Swedesburg and immerse your groups in 19th century Swedish heritage. Housed in the former Farmers Union Exchange building, you’ll be able to view authentic items from Swedish immigrants, such as farming implements, homemaking necessities, school materials, and other 19th century artifacts. Find out what sort of food these immigrants brought with them for their long journey to the United States, such as bread, grain, butter, cheese, and potatoes. Visitors will learn about the Swedish settlement in the area and about early farming practices. Don’t forget about Ole, a 14-foot-tall reddish-orange fiberglass Dala horse.

These colorful horses originated in the Dalarna Province in Sweden, and have become the symbol of the entire country. If anyone in your group is interested in tracing their roots, library volunteers can assist in searching through genealogical records from the area.

KALONA Leave behind the stress of today’s world and savor the family values, work ethic, and unpretentious lifestyle of an earlier age. At the Kalona Historical Village, your groups will stroll through a scenic 1800s village and explore pioneer life through 13 authentic buildings. Each of these structures is restored and filled with interesting and informative displays depicting the rugged years immigrant settlers spent taming the Iowa prairie. The village encompasses the eras from the earliest frontier days of the Snyder Log Home, to the Victorian influence of the lovely Wahl House.

Dubbed the “Quilt Capital of Iowa,” Kalona is home of the Quilt & Textile Museum located in the Kalona Historical Village Welcome Center. View two nationally acclaimed galleries: one for Amish textiles, and the second featuring English pieces.

Matchstick Marvels Tourist Center

Visit and learn about the local Amish settlement, which is one of the largest west of the Mississippi River. Groups can discover the great respect the Amish have for family and their elders, and the considerate way the Amish provide care for the senior generation in grandpa house.

GLADBROOK Over five million wooden matchsticks have gone into Iowa artist Patrick Acton’s 70 incredibly detailed scale models of life-like sculptures, complex machines, and world-renowned architecture. The tiny 2-inch-long sticks have been used to build huge models, like his 13-foot true-toscale model of the battleship USS Iowa, and a 12foot lighted model of the United States Capitol.

The Matchstick Marvels display continues to draw visitors from all over the world.

If you visit during June or December, take part in Swedesburg’s Midsummer Fest and St. Lucy’s Day celebrations.

Learn about another culture in the Iowa Mennonite Museum & Archives, where you will find many historical artifacts related to the Mennonite culture and Mennonite history. The Archives are also a rich repository of Mennonite genealogical records, past and present. Groups can also enjoy a meal served in a conservative Mennonite home, and learn more about the intriguing traditions of the Amish and Mennonite cultures.

You can see many of Acton's most intricate creations at the Matchstick Marvels Tourist Center, as well as drawings and plans for many of the models, plus tools and equipment used in construction, and a video documentary of Acton's unusual hobby. More of Acton’s unique models can be seen in museums around the world. Many are featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not museums in North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe.

9 – 10:00am Enjoy a morning stroll on the Memorial Walkway along Odebolt Creek. The walkway includes perennial flower gardens, benches, and gazebos for shade and relaxation.

10 – 11:00am Tour the First National Bank, which was originally known as Adams Bank when it was built in 1918. The lavish building’s interior is restored to its original 1900s style. Groups can tour the historic bank, as well as W.A. Adams’ town office and garage located behind the bank with prior arrangements.

11:00am – 12:30pm Stop at the Old Odebolt Bowling Alley Restaurant for a delicious lunch and salad bar, or arrange for a catered meal at the Odebolt Community Center.

12:30 – 3:00pm After lunch, visit Heritage Square. Groups can tour the Iowa Rural Schools Museum inside the restored Victorian-style 1883 Willow Tree School, which includes a collection of over 2,000 items from the 1870s to the 1950s. These captivating items will transport you back to the days of one-room schools. Further your experience with a video presentation of Iowa’s Unsung Prairie Transformation to Farms & OneRoom Schools. This documentary provides insight into Iowa’s farm settlement and the construction of 12,623 one-room schools by immigrant farmers. Next, tour the 1886 Peterson Pioneer Home—one of the first homes built in Odebolt. This house has been restored and furnished with antiques from the 1800s. Tour the Odebolt Historical Museum to learn about the Adams and Cook Ranches.

Displays feature military history, a 1900s kitchen, a barbershop, hospital equipment, school memorabilia, music section, many local artifacts, as well as historical items and photos from Odebolt’s past.

3 – 4:00pm Take an evening stroll through the fragrant and beautiful gardens of Prairie Pedlar. Groups can view phenomenal perennials, herbs, ornamental trees & shrubs, hanging baskets, and filled containers. Take a walking tour of more than 50 display gardens, visit the barn and gift shop, or see what events, workshops and gardening classes are available!

4 – 4:30pm Discover Odebolt’s ties to Cracker Jack and American Popcorn Companies. On Dewey Street you can view the Cracker Jack Company seed drying building, or drive a bit further out of town to visit historic corncribs used to dry ears of popcorn produced by local farmers. Odebolt was once known as the “Popcorn Capital of the World” for producing 3/4 of the world’s popcorn by 1915.

After the Great Depression, the Castle fell into disrepair. It saw a renaissance in the ‘60s as an artist mecca and, believe it or not, as a rock concert venue in the late ‘70s to early ‘90s. Famous bands including Aerosmith, The Doobie Brothers, Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, and Tina Turner, all rocked the Castle.

Group tours of the property include a narrated tram tour of the exterior and a walking tour of the interior. Microphoned guides are knowledgeable in not just historical points but also personal stories and tailor each tour to the abilities and interests of the group.

Castle Farms is handicap accessible and has wheelchairs available, so no one is left out of the tours. Paved paths and extensive gardens enchant guests, while a World War I museum will take them back to another era. Another fan favorite is the outdoor Model Railroad, the largest in Michigan. Over 70 trains travel 2,500 feet of track from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting. HO and G-scale trains run along historical replicas as well as up fanciful towers and through hedges and flowers.

What was life like for early Swedish immigrants in Minnesota? What did they bring with them from across the ocean? What did they leave behind?

What awaited them at their destination? Learn how these early families lived, worked, and played back in Minnesota’s frontier days on your visit to the Gammelgården Museum in Scandia.

Gammelgården means “old small farm,” and this museum is the only such open-air facility in the United States devoted to Swedish immigration.

Its preserved and restored buildings date back to the 1850s, when Minnesota’s first Swedes settled in the area.

ON YOUR VISIT TO GAMMELGÅRDEN, YOU CAN: • Hear stories of the families who lived in the Immigrant Hus and the Pråst Hus, the oldest existing parsonage in Minnesota.

• Get a close look at the tools stored in the barn, and listen to farmers’ stories in the Ladugård.

• Attend a service in the GammelKyrkan, the oldest Lutheran church building in Minnesota.

Gammelgården’s calendar includes several special events, which are held on the museum’s green, shady, and well-kept grounds:

• During the Immigrant for a Day event in May, you may find yourself hauling water, making butter, doing laundry, or playing games as you step into the shoes of a recent immigrant making a new life on a small farm.

• Celebrate the long days of summer with traditional Swedish music and dances as the Majstång is raised on Midsommar Dag in June.

• Spelmånstamma, or the “Gathering of Fiddlers,” is held in August. It celebrates a long tradition of fiddlers gathering, playing tunes, and teaching each other new music.

Gammelgården also offers Swedish language classes, sausage-making classes, and coffees and teas where Swedish specialties are served. The year winds down with a traditional Meatballs and Lutfisk Dinner, and finally Lucia Dagen, bringing light to the dark days of December.

The Scandia Butik offers a selection of gifts, including fine Scandinavian imported food and gifts, sweaters, linens, books, and cards.

Minnesota River Valley BYWAY BITS FARMS & RED BARNS What do the Jolly Green Giant, a millionaire’s estate, and a 100-year-old “Century Farm” have in common? They’re all here along the Byway!

Near Redwood Falls is the Gilfillan Estate. Tour the mansion, the large farm museum, and attend FarmFest—a huge agricultural festival held every August.

Minnesota’s Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls hosts the state’s largest collection of farm equipment and exhibits. Check out the old time threshing show every August!

East of Montevideo is the Olof Swensson Farm Museum built in 1901. You can see the large barn, 22-room home, and welcoming grounds.

Le Sueur is home to the Green Giant Company.

The local museum and town markers tell the whole story! Ho, Ho, Ho! CANOEING, KAYAKING & HIKING The Minnesota River, generally slow and winding, provides excellent game fishing including walleye, northern, channel and flathead catfish. Rock rapids, white water, and fine fishing can all be found on the Yellow Medicine River and Hawk Creek, which some claim are two of the best white water rivers in the state. If that sounds too ambitious for you, try your luck on the Chippewa or the Pomme de Terre Rivers, as they are known for their wildlifeviewing and gentle waters.

Prime spots for hiking are located in the six state parks and many other parks along the Byway. A wide variety of hiking awaits you with forested, prairie, and riparian ecosystems. Bring along friends or family to make this trip a memorable one. Don’t forget the camera!

GOLF & FRISBEE GOLF There are more than 25 golf courses along the Byway with a wide variety of playing surfaces and layouts, many with beautiful bluff and valley views! Frisbee golf courses exist in many river valley communities.

HUNTING & FISHING Hunting in the valley begins in the fall with over 150,000 geese at the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area. Deer, duck, pheasant, and turkey are numerous, and trapping muskrat, mink, fox, raccoon, and beaver is also viable. Bow and black powder hunting have grown recently with outfitters able to supply your needs along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway.

Ortonville’s Big Stone Lake is famous for national fishing contests, but all along the river and its tributaries walleye, largemouth bass, crappies, northern pike, perch, blue gill, and fighting catfish abound. Don’t forget about the ice fishing in the winter!

BIRDING The Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail is almost entirely within the Scenic Byway and there have been sightings of nearly 350 species within the river’s watershed. With many refuges, wildlife management areas, scientific and natural areas, parks and other specified lands, the habitat is healthy and widespread. Check www.birdingtrail.org for great details!

FESTIVALS With 287 miles’ worth of towns, there’s bound to be a festival for your taste or season. Here is just a sample of some events: Sauerkraut Days (Henderson), Rock Bend Folk Festival (St. Peter), RibFest (Mankato), Bavarian Blast (New Ulm), FarmFest (Redwood Falls), Fiesta Days (Montevideo), AppleFest (Appleton).

Don Burhans and his wife Claire have created a museum for railroad enthusiasts, model railroaders, railroad historians, and educators interested in preserving and sharing their knowledge and passion, and inspiring the next generation to carry on after us.

The museum includes HO and N scale layouts, both on exhibit and in process. They offer numerous train-related events throughout the year, a large railroad-related library, speakers, train shows and swaps. Scandinavian Heritage in Clay County This sample itinerary can be customized for any time of year.

The Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County invites you to explore the history and rich heritage of the area. With a variety of exhibitions, cultural festivals, films, lectures, and historical sites, your groups will receive a full immersion in the culture of FargoMoorhead and the Red River Valley.

10:00am – 12:00pm Your adventure begins at the Hjemkomst Center. Get an up-close view of the jawdropping Hjemkomst, a 76-foot-long Viking ship, complete with Igor, the dragon figurehead. In 1982 the ship sailed from Duluth to Norway after local educator Robert Asp built it in a Hawley potato shed. His family and friends completed the voyage in 72 days. Explore the ship gallery and learn this 20th-century Viking saga, worthy of a Norse legend. Follow that story with a guided tour of the Hopperstad Stave Church, a replica of the Viking-age stave church located in Vik, Norway. Discover more of the strong Scandinavian culture of the region and learn about the craftsmanship that went into the detail of this local wonder.

12 – 1:00pm The Minnesota culture doesn't stop there.

Take a seat at the Rex Café under the Hjemkomst Center atrium and indulge in some local fare like the Messy Sven, Ole's Potato Salad Sandwich, or Mosquito Bites.

The café now sits at the site of the former Rex Hotel, a prominent locale built by The Duluth Brewing & Malting Co., named after one of their beers, and rich with the sordid history for which Moorhead was once famous.

1 – 3:00pm After lunch, continue your journey into Fargo-Moorhead’s local history and culture.

Take a stroll through the rest of the fantastic exhibitions, but start with Wet and Dry: Alcohol in Clay County, 1871-1937. This local exhibition runs until January 8, 2018 and details the role of booze in a city that started with a railroad and a gunfight, continued through Prohibition-era speakeasies, and still exists as one of the binge-drinking capitals of the U.S. Explore the spirited debates surrounding the issue in three major periods: Settlement, the Saloon Era, and Prohibition.

From the Rushmore Mall to unique downtown shops, Native American arts and crafts outlets and Black Hills gold jewelers, you’ll find a variety of shopping available to your groups while visiting Rapid City. LaClare Farms: Taste Something out of the Ordinary MALONE, WI

LaClare Farms is a family-run dairy goat farm located in southeastern Wisconsin. Spend a few hours or the whole day exploring this beautiful, group-friendly facility.

Larry and Clara Hedrich (the “La” and “Clare” of LaClare Farms) started their dairy goat operation in the late ‘80s. After a few years of showing their goats throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, they decided to go commercial, milking goats by machine. After working with a local dairy plant, they crafted their first batch of Evalon, their trademark cheese made from 100% LaClare Farms milk. This signature cheese went on to win several awards, and soon this operation became a household name in the cheesemaking world.

Take your groups for a memorable, 7-mile, 55-minute round-trip train ride on a former branch line of the Chicago & North Western Railway, nestled in a valley between the Baraboo Hills of rural Sauk County. Passengers ride in restored steel coaches built a century ago. An authentically attired conductor will call “all aboard!” before the train leaves from a historic wooden depot, built in 1894.

Mid-Continent is much more than just a train ride.

The Coach Shed is filled with restored wooden passenger cars, freight cars, and displays from the turn of the century. There you will find examples of Mid-Continent’s nationally renowned wood car restorations, such as the Badger #2 “Fish Car,” the exquisite Art Nouveau-motif of the Milwaukee Lake Shore & Western #63, and the 1903-built Copper Range Coach #60. In the outdoor display yard, you can inspect steam locomotives up close, including Copper Range Locomotive #29, Soo Line #2645, and Kewaunee Green Bay & Western #49. In all, there are nearly 40 train cars and locomotives on prominent display with many more awaiting restorations.
