DRIVE A TANK: A MINI-MILITARY ADVENTURE
O
ne of the great satisfactions of working with groups is making people happy. Often times it’s the little things that accomplish that: value added items, games played on the bus, meeting new friends, special treatments like receptions or treats at destinations; those wonderful special touches that allow your caring ways and likeability to shine through. But sometimes it’s the big things. Sometimes it’s the destination. Sometimes it’s dreams coming true. And that is pretty much what happens all the time at Drive A Tank. Certainly no ordinary adventure, Drive A Tank offers your group a once-ina-lifetime experience like none other. In fact, there is no other place anywhere in the United States where you can do this. So people come from all over the world to a tiny town in Minnesota, about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Minneapolis/Saint Paul, just north of Mankato, to a place called Kasota. Apparently, if you build it they really will come! Drive A Tank is exactly what the name suggests: a chance to drive authentic tanks and shoot machine guns, all in a safe environment. A real live military experience without the war! Owner Tony Borglund didn’t set out to have such an unusual business. On a trip to England with his dad they noticed such places abound. “The Brits are proud of their military
heritage,” said Borglund, “unlike here in the U.S. where we keep it more hidden.” An idea was hatched. “Tanks are cool and people will pay money to drive them.” Soon they purchased a bunch of vehicles in England and began the process of moving them to the United States. The company has only been around for about a decade. The challenge of adhering to all the government and safety regulations, getting the proper permits in place, and even just finding a location for such an undertaking was almost as huge as the idea itself. But the motivation was just as big: Provide folks with “one of the coolest things they’ve ever done.” It’s awesome and it’s crazy and it truly is a chance to step out of the ordinary and do something unusual. And you know what? People love it. Maybe you’ve got a group who would love it, too. Let’s face it. Most people have never driven a tank. This military theme park allows you to drive a tank, crush cars, and shoot machine guns…all under one roof—so to speak. And, the government does not own it. Provide your group with their own armored mini-military adventure. All the tanks are British tanks. There is a 45-minute safety briefing to start, and then a battlefield with all sorts of terrain (even a path through the woods) to drive your tank on. There is car crushing and an indoor firing range for automatic weapons. And it’s really easy. If you can figure out
your left from your right, you can drive a tank. Plus, who doesn’t like shooting a machine gun?! You may think Drive A Tank appeals only to men, but you’d be wrong. As Borglund pointed out to me: “Chicks dig tanks too. The ratio is not 50/50, but it’s closer than you’d think.” And age? Not much of a factor. The oldest customer was a 96-year-old man who had no problem doing any of the stuff, according to Borglund. Yes, it’s pretty extreme, but anyone can do it. Maybe that’s why retired persons love it so much. Then there is Diane, a self-professed adrenaline junkie who was 74 last year when she traveled up from Missouri to tick yet another item off her bucket list. Diane just met the height limit at 4’11’’. She said she was afraid to ask if there was a minimum weight requirement since she weighs a mere 77 pounds. She may be little but she’s mightily determined. They had to put a cushion under her bottom so she could see out the peephole. Her experience? “They were extremely nice and extremely accommodating.” It took three days to wipe the smile off her face. While the guns on the tank are actually disabled for safety reasons, the indoor shooting gallery satisfies your need to shoot at things. Diane shot a Thomson AK47 and the crew at Drive A Tank even told her “I want you on my team.” I’m guessing you don’t want to mess with Diane. “It’s quite an adventure,” she reports.
“I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” For a little extra fee, and a whole lot more fun, you can drive that tank over a car or motorhome or even a trailer house! The power of a 5-ton machine at your disposal just makes you want to crush things. Diane told me, “I just think everyone ought to do it. We had a wonderful time.” She added, “I was high for three days after…it pumps the adrenaline so much.” What about your group? Want to help make some dreams come true? “Tanks are a mysterious machine,” Borglund points out, “different from the norm.” Perhaps that’s why they provide such a memorable experience. The best way to start your group on an awesome, crazy, and memorable adventure is to give Tony a call (507-931-7385). He will design an experience that fits perfectly for your group. Plan on about half a day, but it really depends on the package you choose. He even has an option for an MRE lunch in the field (that’s military lingo for “meals ready to eat”). No matter the size of your group, Borglund can make it fit—fit the group and suit the person. “I’ve never told anyone, ‘No, that’s too big a group, we can’t do it.’ We’ll always figure it out.” However it gets figured out, know this: Nobody ever wants to leave.

THE GUYS HAVE IT!
BY KATHLEEN SOMERS
P
op a car hood, dig a hole in your yard, or start construction on anything, and men will come flocking. Even if it’s just to stand around and watch, they love projects. Competitive by nature with a built-in can-do attitude, men attract to tools, sports and challenges. So it makes perfect sense that enticing a bunch of men to a tour bus will take more than shopping and museums. In what may be a natural backlash to the girlfriend getaway, and perhaps a natural outgrowth of bachelor parties and beer blasts, we now see an emerging trend in tourism called the “guy getaway,” or “mancation” as it is sometimes referred. And while vacationing like a man is not new, it is now popular enough to have spilled over into the group travel market. Have you considered how this special niche in travel fits into your business? “The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.”
in their travel. You could be the one to lead them to it. Did you know that recent online research found an estimated 20 million men currently spend between $10 and $12 billion a year on guys-only getaways? When two million web users were recently polled, Compete, a Boston-based online market research firm, found that among those polled, 38% of men and 34% of women had taken a gender-based trip in the last year. So clearly there’s a market. If you think guy getaways means not thinking about the fairer sex, think again. “Eighty percent of all travel decisions are made by women; regardless of who they travel with, or who pays for the trip or where they go,” says Forbes. And tour operator and travel agent research indicate that women make 70% of travel decisions. So while gender-specific group travel is trending, it’s a very good idea to be sensitive to the one he left at home. With that said, let’s look at some ways to get him out of the man-cave and into the motorcoach.
– Henry David Thoreau
Or maybe he just has to wait for the planner to put together an exciting itinerary. The mancation trend is here to stay and there are huge opportunities for the group market. No longer is the tour bus filled with only retirees looking out the window while tourist attractions float by. Today’s groups are made up of a much wider demographic encompassing all sorts of groups. One of those groups is looking for a little more adrenaline
Guys’ travel options are endless. They allow men to blow off a little steam, maybe relax a bit, and even recharge, while having a fantastic time bonding with new or established buddies. If you’re thinking sports, spirits and something special to eat will get your trip started, you’d be right. The beauty is, you can combine all three aspects in a variety of ways: from one afternoon at the ballpark with brats and beers to a week or more of golf courses, distillery tours and a quest for the world’s best burger. See if any of these ideas trigger your own creative juices.

Staying on Course, of Course
Perhaps your group loves all things golf—from driving ranges to actual golf courses, to lessons with the pros. There are golf museums and pro shops, disc golf at the new Forsyth Disc Golf Course in Illinois (it’s gotten rave reviews). In keeping with the theme, you could watch one of the many excellent golf movies on your motorcoach ride, such as The Legend of Bagger Vance or Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius. Plan to take your group to a golf tournament. Look for simulated golf, like what you’ll find at Scheels in Fargo, ND. And if your group is fortunate enough to actually be on the golf course, be sure to provide cigars and a cold one to make the day all the more memorable. Dining at the golf course is also a good option.
Lakes, Rivers and Streams
What about trout fishing lessons, or canoeing or kayaking? Bring your guys

fishing in Lake of the Woods, MN, otherwise known as “The Walleye Capital of the World™.” Resorts in the area will provide your group with the perfect mix of experience and luxury. Consider river cruises, or hop aboard the Appledore IV and sail the waters of the Saginaw River in a tall ship. New Town, ND offers a relaxing yacht cruise on scenic Lake Sakakawea during the summer. In southeastern Kansas you’ll find Timber Hills Lake Ranch with its world-class fishing. For a slightly slower pace, check out Horicon Marsh Boat Tours in Wisconsin. Specializing in the motorcoach industry for 52 years, they know how to keep your group comfortable on the pontoon sightseeing tour. Anything in or around water is always a winner.
Bleachers and Stands
You can never go wrong with America’s favorite pastime. Baseball games, such as a RedHawks game in Fargo, are always more fun than anyone should be allowed to have. And plan to visit the Maury Wills Museum as part of your RedHawks experience. Also while in Fargo, get your group over to the Roger Maris Museum. Consider batting cages, basketball games, and stadium tours like Lambeau in Green Bay or the Kansas City Royals Kauffman Stadium Tour in Missouri. Iowa is home to the real Field of Dreams, and Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN invites your group to experience the heart-pounding excitement of live horse racing. Step back in time with the St. Croix Vintage Base Ball Club, or a real old-fashioned sports card store.
Tours and Museums
While not all museums may make the cut for your he-man group, there are plenty the guys will thrill to. Tour a working sawmill at Kendrick Forest Products in Iowa. John Deere Adventures provides factory tours, a pavilion with vintage machines, plus the original homestead site. Look for classic car collections in Nebraska or My Garage Museum in Illinois. There’s the Trucking Museum in Iowa, and the Kansas Motorcycle Museum. Michigan is home to the Gilmore Car Museum and Adventure Mining Company offers four guided underground tours of one of the best-preserved copper mines in the state. And just because baseball is always a good choice, there’s the Museum of Nebraska Major League Baseball, dedicated to the careers of over 140 major league ball players with roots in Nebraska. Don’t forget the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame in South Dakota.

not get a little rivalry going with a 600-horsepower NASCAR racecar at the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Kansas Speedway? Get your group some drag racing lessons, off-road driving experiences, or just take them to Southwest Speedway for some racing action in North Dakota.
Out West
Extreme Adventure
And if the need is for adventure, try Buffalo Safari Jeep Tours in South Dakota or some high flying on the Soaring Eagle Zip Line. Experience the scenic Minnesota River Valley from above the trees at the #1 zip line in Minnesota, Kerfoot Canopy Tours. Anything that involves jumping off or climbing tall structures will get the juices flowing. But the best idea of all is a day at Drive A Tank in Minnesota or nearby Extreme Sandbox. Seek out some rock climbing, or fun at Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan.
that attracts groups from near and far. The Culinary Center of Kansas City offers serious educational curriculum committed to the art of grilling. The Blind Pig Co. in Champaign, IL has 28 drafts on tap and serves craft beers from around the world. It even made it onto the Top 100 American Bars list published by Imbibe Magazine. And when in North Dakota be sure to make the trip to Silver Prairie Saloon, south of Fargo. You will be so glad you did. In Missouri some great choices include Crown Valley Brewing & Distilling or Anheuser-Busch Brewery. For a tour of how limited edition batches of specialty liquors are made, visit FEW Spirits in Evanston, IL. A free tour of Grand River Spirits, also in Illinois, will improve your artisan-spirits IQ.
In the Cards?
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry The thing about men is you gotta feed ‘em. Fortunately there are plenty of ways to incorporate food and drink into a manly group tour. Wisconsin, known for its beer and cheese, offers excellent cheese factory and brewery tours along with some great winery tours. May I suggest the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. for a top experience? All tours include tasting and a souvenir glass. The Firehouse Brewing Company is a wonderful restaurant in South Dakota

For the Wild West experience, bring your guys to a rodeo in North Dakota. Or maybe immerse them in farm or ranch life like you’ll find at Black Leg Ranch, a real working cattle ranch near Bismarck. Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports in Missouri features a complete shooting experience in a park-like setting. Keep the theme going with the Front Street Cowboy Museum & Steakhouse in Nebraska.
Two big reasons men gravitate toward mancation group travel are the convenience of a pre-packaged deal, along with the male bonding camaraderie. But if you are still not sure about exploring a gender-specific group outing, consider this: you don’t need to dive into the deep end right away. Think about separating your adventure seekers for a special activity while the remaining group enjoys a traditional experience. Then everyone can meet up later for a meal. More work for you of course, but it’s a great way to test the waters and see how this niche of guy getaways works for you.

LARSON’S FAMOUS CLYDESDALES
Larson’s Famous Clydesdales When you hear the word “Clydesdale” you think of Budweiser, right? Well, did you know that the Midwest is home to its very own “Famous Clydesdales?” Larson’s Famous Clydesdales is one of the only places in the United States where visitors can see fourteen of these beautiful creatures, up close and personal. Owners Judy and Cal Larson have watched over these gentle giants for over 28 years. Their dream was to assemble a famous six-up hitch full of siblings, all from one mother and father. It took ten years to make it happen and Cal says that as far as he knows, this has never been accomplished before. The Larsons’ love of big horses is a family affair, with all four of their children having competed and won Junior Championship Awards. Cal and Judy’s six-horse hitch of Clydesdales has won the National Championship, among many other honors. With Cal doing all the training and driving of their six- and eight-horse hitches of Clydesdales, it really is quite a show. Groups have the opportunity to come to the ranch and experience a down-home feel and see what it takes to make it all happen. During the tour you’ll enjoy watching
“Big Bud” getting harnessed, as well as a demonstration of a cart class, antique hitch wagons, and a museum. Judy will be your tour guide and gives a humorous and personal tour guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. She reels off her daily lectures in an energetic, encyclopedic fashion that is sure to keep your group entertained. This 90-minute guided tour is truly exciting, capped off with a short Grandstand Show. Pat and take pictures with champion Clydesdales and even meet a rare baby Clydesdale. Be sure to visit the Souvenir Shop! Larson’s Famous Clydesdales is located in Ripon, Wisconsin and open mid-May through mid-October, rain or shine. Shows start at 1:00pm, Monday-Saturday. For more information or to reserve a tour for your group, call 920-748-5466 or visit them online at www.larsonsclydesdales.com.

The Original Operating Toy Train Museum in Iowa What better place to learn about three eras of trains than at Trainland U.S.A.? This extensive toy train museum in Colfax, IA displays Lionel trains and accessories along 4,000 feet of track. Bammert Blacksmith Shop Museum | PHOENIX In the early days of Keweenaw copper mining, blacksmiths were in high demand as horse-drawn carriages and wagons were the principal means of land transportation. Built in the 1880s at the Cliff Mine and moved to Phoenix in 1906, Amos Bammert operated this blacksmith shop until his death in 1940. In addition to shoeing horses, Amos built buggies, sleighs and wagon wheels in this very shop. The Keweenaw County Historical Society has restored the building’s exterior and interior, exhibiting the shop and equipment as they were at the end of the 19th century.

Like the Vietnam memorial picture or the autographed photo of Judith Resnik (America’s second female astronaut, who perished in the Challenger), which hangs over the cash register. There is a letter written to
the Minnesota Twins’ previous owner Calvin Griffin asking why he kept trading away the team’s best players. His reason will amaze you…and get a discussion going! With or without an interest in sports, your group will have a memorable time. Spend as little or as much time as your group needs. “It’s a neat place for people to come,” says Huneg. There is a huge parking lot to accommodate your motorcoach. No stairs is a plus. And Rob Huneg is super fun to work with. Contact him for your own group’s visit at 612-872-6666 or online at www.twincitiessportscards.com.
Much of Twin Cities Sports Cards’ success can be attributed to its unique items and congenial atmosphere. Still, let’s not discount owner Rob Huneg’s welcoming ways, passion for the hobby, and vision to create a special place where kids, adults, men, women, browsers and buyers can all come and feel equally accepted. An old-fashioned barbershop type place where mail carriers and policemen, children and serious collectors come and learn and maybe leave feeling a little better

150-year-old story is still being woven. One of the last vertical woolen mills in America, these fifth generation craftspeople take raw wool and create products of outstanding comfort and quality. Shop their vast collection of blankets, throws, scarves and accessories. 2 – 3:30 pm Visitors travel for miles to get a taste of the world-class cheeses made at Caves of Faribault. In 1854 a German immigrant named Gottfried Fleckenstein began using these natural sandstone caves for brewing and storing beer. Fleckenstein Brewing Co. operated here until 1919 when Prohibition was imposed. Due to federal regulations, public tours are not offered at the caves, but you can sample and purchase their famous cheeses at The Cheese Cave in downtown Faribault. 3:30 – 5:00 pm Check into one of Northfield’s many group-friendly hotels and freshen up for the evening! 5 – 7:00 pm Enjoy contemporary dining with neighborhood charm at The Ole Store Restaurant. Their seasonal menus are designed to showcase local ingredients, fresh produce, and the finest meats. 7 – 9:00 pm Enjoy an after-dinner cocktail at Loon Liquors— makers of organic, nationally awarded gin & whiskey.
Or just head back to your hotel for some relaxation.

FARMS & RED BARNS
What do the Jolly Green Giant, a millionaire’s estate, and a 100-year-old “Century Farm” have in common? They’re all here along the Byway! Near Redwood Falls is the Gilfillan Estate. Tour the mansion, the large farm museum, and attend FarmFest—a huge agricultural festival held every August. Minnesota’s Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls hosts the state’s largest collection of farm equipment and exhibits. Check out the old time threshing show every August! East of Montevideo is the Olof Swensson Farm Museum built in 1901. You can see the large barn, 22-room home, and welcoming grounds. Le Sueur is home to the Green Giant Company. The local museum and town markers tell the whole story! Ho, Ho, Ho!

GEOLOGY, MINING & THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE
See the oldest exposed rock in the world! That’s what you’ll find near Granite Falls, but there are several other places along the Byway that will excite the geologist in you. Look closer and you will even find cacti among the outcrops. The draining of Glacial Lake Agassiz from west central Minnesota after the last ice age shaped this river valley. There is still
evidence of those forces for the sharp eye. The old town of Ottawa is ripe with limestone buildings from a local quarry, including a church, town hall, and barn. Near the Minnesota/South Dakota border is the Continental Divide, which separates water flowing south to the Gulf of Mexico and water flowing north to Hudson Bay. A sign at Browns Valley explains this phenomenon. Continued on Page 30

CANOEING, KAYAKING & HIKING
The Minnesota River, generally slow and winding, provides excellent game fishing including walleye, northern, channel and flathead catfish. Rock rapids, white water, and fine fishing can all be found on the Yellow Medicine River and Hawk Creek, which some claim are two of the best white water rivers in the state. If that sounds too ambitious for you, try your luck on the Chippewa or the Pomme de Terre Rivers, as they are known for their wildlife-viewing and gentle waters. Prime spots for hiking are located in the six state parks and many other parks along the Byway. A wide variety of hiking awaits you with forested, prairie, and riparian ecosystems. Bring along friends or family to make this trip a memorable one. Don’t forget the camera!

STOP GOLF & FRISBEE GOLF
There are more than 25 golf courses along the Byway with a wide variety of playing surfaces and layouts, many with beautiful bluff and valley views! Frisbee golf courses exist in many river valley communities. HUNTING & FISHING
Hunting in the valley begins in the fall with over 150,000 geese at the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area. Deer, duck, pheasant, and turkey are numerous, and trapping muskrat, mink, fox, raccoon, and beaver is also viable. Bow and black powder hunting have grown recently with outfitters able to supply your needs along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. Ortonville’s Big Stone Lake is famous for national fishing contests, but all along the river and its tributaries walleye, largemouth bass, crappies, northern pike, perch, blue gill, and fighting catfish abound. Don’t forget about the ice fishing in the winter! BIRDING
The Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail is almost entirely within the Scenic Byway and there have been sightings of nearly 350 species within the river’s watershed. With many refuges, wildlife management areas, scientific and natural areas, parks and other specified lands, the habitat is healthy and widespread. Check www.birdingtrail.org for great details! FESTIVALS
With 287 miles’ worth of towns, there’s bound to be a festival for your taste or season. Here is just a sample of some events: Sauerkraut Days (Henderson), Rock Bend Folk Festival (St. Peter), RibFest (Mankato), Bavarian Blast (New Ulm), FarmFest (Redwood Falls), Fiesta Days (Montevideo), AppleFest (Appleton). As you can see, a wide range of interests and activities await you along the MN River Valley National Scenic Byway! For information call 888-463-9856 or visit www.MNRiverValley.com.
