hich would you rather do: follow your brother into the family business so you can hang outdoor signage in minus-twenty-degree Minnesota winters, or spend your workday cruising beautiful Lake Minnetonka every Minnesota summer? Dave Lawrence was a young man in his twenties when faced with just that sort of choice. No dummy he, Dave jumped at the opportunity to tend bar for a then-popular Lake Minnetonka cruise line. He fell in love with working on the water, and we are so glad he did. That was a while back. By 1985 his love of the hospitality business and his dad’s entrepreneurial spirit merged to inspire Lawrence to found his own business, a Lake Minnetonka cruise line.

Lake Minnetonka is one of Minnesota’s larger lakes and certainly one of the most popular recreational lakes. Officially named in 1852, Minnetonka means “big water” in the Dakota language.

And big it is, with 13 municipalities surrounding it. Early history tells stories of large steamboats, grand hotels, yacht clubs, sailing regattas, and vacations for the rich and famous. All this a mere

15 miles west-southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Lawrence picked himself a fine place to begin his business and in 1988, when he met the woman he would later marry, a new inspiration was sparked to take his company to greater heights.

There’s something very special about Lawrence’s company.

Those “in the know” know: “The second best day in a man’s life is the day he buys his boat. The best day is the day he sells his boat!” This old joke speaks to the universal fact that we all love time on the water. It’s even better when there is no work, maintenance or hassle involved. There’s a certain je ne sais quoi about all things water, be it in, on, or about. We can’t really describe it. We only know that everybody seems to love, dare I say, flock to the water. So while you’re planning your group trips for 2017, maybe consider time on the water. It’s relaxing. Sights from a boat offer a different perspective than from land. More importantly, it just feels so good to be lazily floating on any sort of watercraft.

The water portion of your tour will always stand out as the most memorable, most enjoyable, and often the most talked about.

So come aboard, and let’s figure out some of the many ways you can include boats in your tours.

With water having such universal appeal, it’s a good thing there are so many diverse ways to include your group in a water/ boat themed tour.

There are short tours like the popular 30-minute speedboat tours out of Chicago’s Navy Pier, and overnight outings like the 2-day cruise offered by Riverboat Twilight in Iowa.

Most often planners look for a 1- to 3-hour long adventure that can be easily supplemented into your group’s itinerary.

Good thing there are plenty of those to consider as well, such as Duluth’s sightseeing tour in Minnesota, or the Mark Twain Riverboat dinner cruise in Missouri. And speaking of dinner cruises, you gotta eat, right? So what about eating on the water?

It’s not a given that your group will be fed while cruising, but it is an option quite often. From snacks to box lunches to sit-down candlelight dinners, eating on the water just notches up the fun factor. Consider a box lunch on the luxurious Riverboat Twilight in Iowa when you take your group on the 1.5-hour sightseeing excursion. There is also a cash bar and gift shop located onboard.

Sometimes the meal is the focal point, like with a dinner or lunch cruise on the Breezy Belle in Minnesota. Or just offer some great “unwind time” as your group enjoys dinner while cruising the Missouri River on Omaha, Nebraska’s River City Star.

Sometimes that nautical meal is best served from a restaurant near the water before or after the boat experience. Maxson Riverboat & Restaurant is a perfect example as they offer an on-shore meal in their glass-enclosed riverside dining room. Kansas’ Tuttle Puddle Tours offers a stop at Little Grill, a Jamaican restaurant, as part of a daylong excursion. If your group is into gaming, North Dakota’s 4 Bears Casino is a great stop for fun and food before touring Lake Sakakawea on The Island Girl.

Many on-the-water experiences combine more than one “thing.” I mean, is it dinner, is it sightseeing, is it entertainment, or history?

Hard to tell sometimes because it’s really all that rolled into one great experience. We call that “more bang for your buck.” But if history is what you’re looking for, there’s plenty to be had on the water. In Illinois, the Spirit of Peoria combines a buffet-style meal with live entertainment and history of the Mississippi from Mark Twain himself! Or maybe Michigan’s Alpena Shipwreck Tours is more of what you’re looking for. You can explore the shipwrecks of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary from glass-bottom viewing wells while learning the exciting tales of famous ships and their history. In Duluth, Minnesota your group can learn about the area’s history with Vista Fleet Cruises. South Dakota has the Capital City Queen riverboat tour, which offers a 2-hour cruise on the Missouri River including historic landmarks and some great stuff about the Lewis & Clark expedition. Or travel back in time in Wisconsin with Escapade Lake Cruises where your group will learn the rich history of Green Lake, the state’s deepest inland lake.

Of course, if history is your thing, you will want to check out the Sergeant Floyd River Museum located on Sioux City, Iowa’s riverfront. The dry-docked motor vessel, M.V. Sergeant Floyd is now a historical museum named after the only man to have perished on the Lewis & Clark expedition. Devil’s Lake, North Dakota has a maritime museum and also exhibits models of three paddlewheel

steamboats from the USS North Dakota. Wisconsin’s Door County Maritime Museum showcases the area’s rich maritime roots. In Michigan you can explore the new maritime museum as part of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse tour. A ferry takes your group to one of Michigan’s oldest lighthouses restored to its original 1866 splendor. Missouri has the world’s only permanent Titanic Museum Attraction in a ship shaped structure. New to the museum is the Titanic Murder Mystery experience where your group can solve a whodunit!

Which reminds me: showboat theatre is another great way to add water. That’s right! From June to mid-August your group can enjoy great musicals and comedies performed aboard the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, moored at Riverfront Park in Iowa. Or how about solving a hilarious murder case while enjoying a 3-course dinner amid stunning views of the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan aboard the Harbor Lady in Wisconsin?

Theatre, of course, isn’t the only form of entertainment to be enjoyed on the water. Many cruises and boats offer live entertainment in the form of music or storytelling, such as the Spirit of Peoria in Illinois.

Some of the area’s greatest musicians, storytellers, actors, and entertainers can be found making regular appearances on Illinois’ authentic paddle wheeler. There’s dancing onboard the Spirit of Brownville for an unforgettable river experience in Nebraska. If you make your way to Hannibal, Missouri be sure to book your group on the Mark Twain Riverboat for more dancing and live music.

There you can also enjoy the “prettiest pirate on the Mississippi,” Princess Jenny Cash, as she sings some of her (and likely your) favorites. Continue the tradition of music on the river with modern jazz, big band, and blues from Ben Bumbry and the Messengers.

If your group is still yearning for more, try some Kansas-style adventures by arranging a custom excursion from Prairie Outfitters & Excursions. A Superior Tour Along Highway 61

The world-renowned North Shore Scenic Drive Byway is a journey through breathtaking wilderness along the shorelines of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Stretching 142 miles north from Duluth to Grand Portage, this section of U.S. Highway 61 is nationally designated as an “All-American Road.� View lighthouses, waterfalls, state parks, and friendly shoreline communities on this unforgettable tour.

12 – 2:00pm Visit the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wisconsin. Your tour begins with an introductory film, So We Have a War. Follow the story of WWII from Hitler’s rise in Europe through the attack on Pearl Harbor to the events in the North African, European and Pacific theaters of war and life on the home front.

2 – 4:00pm Make the short drive to Duluth to enjoy a tour of the Glensheen Historic Estate.

This legendary mansion boasts more than 7.6 acres on the shores of Lake Superior.

In addition to the spectacular home, your group can explore its seven acres of formal gardens and working vegetable gardens, the tennis court, and bowling green. Be sure to visit Glensheen’s Museum Shop for that special souvenir.

10 – 11:30am Visit Lake Superior’s floating maritime museum, the S.S. William A. Irvin. Tour the proud flagship of U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes Fleet and marvel at the surprisingly pristine condition of this vessel that carried iron ore and coal for 40 years.

11:30am – 1:30pm Your group can enjoy lunch in Canal Park and browse the many unique shops in the area. Take a stroll along the Lakewalk and you might even see ships entering the harbor.

12 – 2:30pm Get ready for an adventure at Lutsen Mountains! Ride the North Shore Mountain Tram (mid-America’s only gondola lift) to the top of Moose Mountain and enjoy 100-mile views across Lake Superior. Have lunch atop the mountain at Mountain View Grill!

Gondola tour lunches include deli lunch buffet, salad, chips, dessert and beverage.

2:30 – 4:00pm Head south down Highway 61 to explore the historic Split Rock Lighthouse & Visitor Center, perched 130 feet above the lake.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011, Split Rock Lighthouse is a rare example of a highly intact 20th-century Great Lakes light station. View films and exhibits about the lighthouse, and stories of major storms and shipwrecks.

4:00pm Return to Grand Superior Lodge for a relaxing evening.

9 – 11:30am Today your group is headed back up Highway 61 to Minnesota’s own New England: Grand Marais, MN. What a great community for shopping, stunning views, great food, and galleries with locally-produced crafts, jewelry, and inspired artwork—all within Grand Marais’ walkable downtown.

11:30am – 2:30pm Your next stop is at The Naniboujou Lodge for lunch. On the National Register of Historic Places, Naniboujou boasts Minnesota’s largest native rock fireplace, a 200-ton work of art that stands in the 30’ x 80’ Great Hall.

Naniboujou was originally a private club enjoyed by the likes of Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey. Probably the most memorable aspect of the lodge is the wondrously painted dining room with Cree Indian designs over the walls and the twenty-foot-high domed ceiling (resembling the shape of a canoe). This work of art continually amazes and intrigues, echoing the elegance and style of another era. (Itinerary consideration: group teas are served here.)

2:30 – 4:00pm Travel down Highway 61 to Cascade River State Park for breathtaking views of the rushing river and grand waterfalls that lay within the gorge, lush with moss and ferns that grow on black volcanic rocks.

4 – 7:00pm Another great tour option is North Shore Scenic Cruises. Enjoy a unique interpretive cruise along Minnesota’s famous shoreline.

Your group will enjoy a two-hour narrated audio/visual presentation on the sights and attractions along Minnesota’s most majestic section of coastline. See the ships that sail Lake Superior as well as the wrecks that lie under her icy waters. Cruises begin mid-May and run through early October’s fall colors.

The Bregants were spokespersons for the Woodward Candy Company of Council Bluffs and called “The Smallest Couple in the World.”

2 – 4:00pm Grenville M. Dodge was a nationally known and respected military general, railroad builder and politician, and also one of the wealthiest citizens of Iowa. The Historic General Dodge House is on the National Register of Historic Places and is open for tours Tuesday through Sunday.

Efforts are focused on scheduling private groups of 16 to 24 people. The advantage of organizing a private group trip is that you pick the date, time, and river segment you wish to explore. They’ll bring the boats and host an educational “sandbar” seminar followed by a hotdog and marshmallow roast. Float trips along the Kansas River are appropriate for novice boaters and groups, however it takes some muscle power to paddle down the river.

Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours at Wild Mountain Taylors Falls, MN

Since 1906, tourists by the thousands have enjoyed the scenic beauty of the world famous Dalles of the St. Croix River by excursion boat. Near Redwood Falls is the Gilfillan Estate. Tour the mansion, the large farm museum, and attend FarmFest—a huge agricultural festival held every August.

Minnesota’s Machinery Museum in Hanley Falls hosts the state’s largest collection of farm equipment and exhibits. Check out the old time threshing show every August!

East of Montevideo is the Olof Swensson Farm Museum built in 1901. You can see the large barn, 22-room home, and welcoming grounds.

The draining of Glacial Lake Agassiz from west central Minnesota after the last ice age shaped this river valley. There is still evidence of those forces for the sharp eye.

The old town of Ottawa is ripe with limestone buildings from a local quarry, including a church, town hall, and barn.

Near the Minnesota/South Dakota border is the Continental Divide, which separates water flowing south to the Gulf of Mexico and water flowing north to Hudson Bay. A sign at Browns Valley explains this phenomenon.

HUNTING & FISHING Hunting in the valley begins in the fall with over 150,000 geese at the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area. Deer, duck, pheasant, and turkey are numerous, and trapping muskrat, mink, fox, raccoon, and beaver is also viable. Bow and black powder hunting have grown recently with outfitters able to supply your needs along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway.

Ortonville’s Big Stone Lake is famous for national fishing contests, but all along the river and its tributaries walleye, largemouth bass, crappies, northern pike, perch, blue gill, and fighting catfish abound. Don’t forget about the ice fishing in the winter!

BIRDING The Minnesota River Valley Birding Trail is almost entirely within the Scenic Byway and there have been sightings of nearly 350 species within the river’s watershed. 10:00am – 1:00pm The Lewis & Clark Boat House and Nature Center in St. Charles offers something for everyone. On display in the lower level are full-size replicas of the boats that Lewis & Clark’s Corps of Discovery used on the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The keelboat and two pirogues were constructed by volunteers and were used by museum members during their three-year reenactment of the entire expedition during the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial.

The upper level houses the Lewis & Clark Museum, with exhibits related to the expedition, the river and natural habitats they encountered. The museum is self-guided. A brochure explains the exhibits, and an activity sheet helps children explore the museum. A 20% adult entrance fee discount is offered for tour groups of 15 or more, and tour leaders

and bus drivers are admitted for free. An orientation program presented upon arrival tells about the facility and Lewis & Clark’s stay in St. Charles. Be sure to stop by the gift shop before you leave!
