Engaging communities & enriching lives

Message from the

president and the director

A

Although we are just beginning the planning process, staff are committed to keeping our members informed and updated on any upcoming plans.

s we close the books on 2014, we look forward to an exciting 2015. We are happy to report the many exciting changes that have taken place, from new software to improved service and extended outreach, the library continues to move forward on its strategic plan. We are fortunate to serve a community that values its library and we see that every day in the members we talk to and the questions we answer. While some communities are struggling to keep public libraries funded, we are thankful that our residents recognize the immense impact the library has on the community, whether it is offering storytimes, teaching early literacy skills or providing a place to meet friends or study.

As always, we remain dedicated to providing exceptional resources to the 67,000 residents we serve.

1K CLUB

In September, the library launched 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a national initiative that grew out of the belief that children need to hear 1,000 stories read aloud to best prepare them to read on their own. This ongoing program is open to any child, birth to pre-K.

280 CHILDREN registered for the program by the end of 2014. 4

English as a Second Language

ESL Classes

Nowhere is our community’s diversity more apparent than in the popularity and growth of the library’s ESL classes. Our ESL classes offer non-native speakers the opportunity to improve their English language skills, which is vital to their understanding of American culture and society and their economic success.

The Foundation for the

Indian Trails Public Library District The library has been fortunate to be served by three fundraising groups: Children’s Advocates, Foundation for the Indian Trails Library and Friends of the Library. We are grateful for the years of service and the funding they have provided to the library. In 2014, the library asked the three groups to meet and begin exploring the possibility of merging into one group. After discussion, the groups opted to merge under the umbrella of the Foundation for the Indian Trails Library to better maximize resources and skills. The new Foundation will be launched in early 2015.

Thank you to these groups who made this merger possible. Children’s Advocates Sheila Anderson Marcia Becker Jane Born Stephanie Demb Allison Leist Don Johnson Jenny Johnson Darla Stavros Beth Stoken
