Meet the Trustees
MEET TRUSTEE: CAITLYN KEENAN
Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?
I grew up going to the libraries in Chicago and have such fond memories of the libraries we went to.
My daughter and I love the library and all of its offerings. When I moved to Wheeling, I was looking for a way to get involved and support the library that we love so much.
What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community? The library supports a third space outside of home and school/work. It offers a place to gather, explore, play, discover, and expands our community’s access to ideas, tools and experiences that we would not otherwise have or know about.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee?
Shortly after joining the board, I had the pleasure of voting to approve and attend the groundbreaking for The Little Free Pantry, installed by amazing 9-year-old Maya Schaab.
What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them? Many libraries across the country are facing censorship, deteriorating community support and decreased funding. Indian Trails Library District’s leadership and staff have worked hard to build a wonderful culture, connect with the community through extensive partnerships and programming, being fiscally responsible through external funding sources and internal controls, and defending the right to the free exchange of ideas. Our community can continue to support, patronize and advocate for the library.
What are your hopes and goals for the future of our library? I’m excited to see the library be a welcoming place and resource for all of our community.
REGISTRATION
My hope is that the library evolves as it carries out the vision of embracing culture, connecting community and igniting curiosity. A shared goal is to advocate for accessibility and support our community through representation and inclusion. I’m looking forward to advocating for supporting neurodivergent members and children with diverse needs.
What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult? There are so many–one of my all-time favorites as a kid was Tomie de Paolo’s Strega Nona–who doesn’t want a never-ending supply of delicious freshly made pasta? As an adult, I’m still a big Harry Potter fan and anything historical fiction.
What is your favorite area of the main library or branch? The Launch Pad and the Muriel Lischett Reading Room.
Registration for most November and December programs opens on Tuesday, October 15 at 9 am.

Maker-in-Residence
ACCESSIBILITY TO ART DEMYSTIFIES THE CREATIVE PROCESS
The Launch Pad makerspace hosted its second annual Maker-in-Residence program during the summer. This unique initiative brings working artists into the library to teach their craft. This provides the community with an exceptional opportunity to engage with and learn from professionals actively involved in the art world. Direct interaction can inspire, motivate, and provide invaluable insights that surpass what traditional forms of education can offer.
Library staff selected Shannon Lee, an independent animator, visual artist and educator, from many applicants to lead the program. Shannon’s work in animation techniques blends science fiction, magical realism, and personal experiences through experimental narratives. She has been showcased at international film festivals and teaches continuing education classes at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
We are committed to supporting professional working artists who share their craft through in-person instruction with community members.
Programs like the Maker-inResidence are crucial to the Foundation’s mission of fostering creativity and learning. Your contributions help us bring talented makers like Shannon into the library to offer learning experiences to our members. Please join us in supporting the 2025 Maker-in-Residence program.

During her residency, Shannon led a group of all ages in creating an animated video for the library. Over three weeks, participants learned to make 2D puppets with paper and used the puppets to create stop-animation videos. This collaborative process not only taught practical applications of artistic skills and techniques but also fostered a sense of community as participants learned and created together under the guidance of a practicing artist.
Many participants experienced creating 2D puppets and stop-motion animation for the first time.
“Shannon is a great teacher. Very informative, patient, and nice to work with.”
“This was a lot of fun. It was great to have the program in 3 parts.”
“This was a great class and to be able to learn both parts.”
