One Book,

Now in its ninth year, One Book, One Community (OBOC) is a partnership among Cook Memorial, Indian Trails and Vernon Area public library districts to encourage dialogue and build community through a shared experience of literature.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Geeta’s no-good husband disappears, rumors spread in her rural Indian village. Geeta soon learns that a dangerous reputation comes with some benefits: No one messes with her or tries to control her. It’s even been good for business; no one dares to not buy her jewelry. Geeta convinces herself that she enjoys her freedom, even if its price is isolation—that is, until other wives ask her to help dispatch their no-good husbands too. With her reputation becoming a double-edged sword, Geeta must find a way to protect the life she’s built while juggling the personalities of a complicated band of would-be widows.

For fans of Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri or the series “Dead to Me,” The Bandit Queens is a razor-sharp tale of female friendship filled with clever criminals, second chances and wry and witty women.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Parini Shroff holds an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a practicing attorney and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay area, and has family in Gujarat, India. The Bandit Queens is her debut novel and is a national bestseller.

Meet the Trustees

MEET TRUSTEE:

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?

One evening, my son, who was around 12 or 13 years old, said to me, “Take me to the library,” and off we went, along with my daughter, so he could work on a school project. As we browsed, I opened a book that spoke to me and when I looked up, I noticed a sign indicating that the library was looking for trustees. I was searching for something extra to do. At my alma mater, Morehouse College, we were taught to contribute to our community in honor of Dr. King.

As a Wheeling resident, Henry has served on the board from April 2001 to present and has held positions as Trustee, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community?

Our role is to help the community. Many people here may not be able to afford a computer or a movie. I tell others that if it’s winter and you’re stuck at home with your grandchildren, take them to the library—you won’t regret it. Libraries offer much more than you think, and a good library can improve the educational standards of the entire community.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee?

1. Being appointed here on the board. When I was a senior at Morehouse College, I worked in the library. Miss Johnson was very patient with me and now I’m here.

2. A member suggested creating a space for students to study for final exams after the library closes. The library is now in its fourth year of hosting After Hours Finals Night Study Sessions, which take place on a weekend every December for high school students only. This program provides study spaces, pizza and refreshments to equip students with the resources they need to succeed in their exams.

3. Passing the referendum to renovate the library.

What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them?

One of the biggest challenges libraries face today is the rapid pace of societal change.

The staff at Indian Trails Library is excellent, and we have a very cohesive board. We must stay on top of changes such as technological advancements and shifts in community dynamics.

What are your hopes and goals for the future of our library? I want to keep making progress. It’s important to listen to the members who use this library and understand why they come here—and find out why members of our community don’t use the library. Ultimately, it’s about building a strong community. If we can’t serve effectively, we need to ask ourselves why not. I don’t understand the mindset of “Oh, you can’t do that.” Instead, let’s just try it.

What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult?

As a high school aged child, The Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger was my favorite book. As an adult, I discovered the world of audiobooks, first on tape, then on CD and now digitally streaming to my smart device.

What is your favorite area of the main library or branch?

The Branch-the whole location as it opens opportunities for people living in the area. At the main library, my favorite area is the documentaries section.
