Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?
I live and work in Buffalo Grove. I’ve been working in Information Technology since I was in my 20s. I grew up in Buffalo Grove, about a half mile from the library. I have been visiting this library since it was built, as well as the old library on Jenkins Ct. before that. My girlfriends and I would join the summer reading program, and I’ve often wondered how we managed to carry all those books home. The library is one of my happy places. Since raising my own family here, my kids have the same love for the library. I was encouraged to run by family and friends who know my passion for the library. I decided in the fall of 2022 to run and I’ve been happy with my decision every step of the way. I don’t think I’ve missed a meeting since being elected. I love being involved at this level.
What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community? The library, librarians, and staff have pivotal roles in people’s lives. Our library is a place to learn new skills, gather to learn about other cultures and get help with too many things to mention. I’m constantly impressed while reading the monthly reports that say how many people are helped daily. Libraries change lives.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee?
I loved learning all about how the board runs during the first few months after being elected. I felt honored to be asked to be the treasurer last year.
What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them?
Some challenges facing libraries are censorship and safety. The library has strong policies in place for both. Staff constantly review and refine policies to ensure they follow best practices.
What are your hopes and goals for the future of our library?
I hope the staff continues to be creative with the program offerings and continue to reach out to the local schools. Early literacy is so important.
What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult?
Well, that is a little like asking which is my favorite child. This is not a comprehensive list.
Children’s book -
“Madeline” by Ludwig Bemelmans
“Tikki Tikki Tembo” by Arlene Mosel Middle School book -
“Outside” by Andre Norton.
This forged the path to my love for dystopian fiction.
Adult -
“The Stand” and “Fairy Tale” both by Stephen King.
“The Martian” by Andy Weir.
See, I can’t choose one! If you ask me tomorrow, my choices may be different.
What is your favorite area of the main library or Branch?
Again, that’s like asking which is my favorite child. The Branch is amazing. They utilize the space so well. My favorite spot at the main library is the Launch Pad. I’m a self-proclaimed nerd who loves to learn, so I love all the technology offered in the Launch Pad. The classes are another favorite “area” of the library.
