MY LIBRARY
Happiness is having your first library card!
Director's Column At the Temporary Library Four months ago, we opened the doors to our temporary location at 70 W. Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove. Since then, I have continued to hear comments from our members like “I can’t believe what you did to the space” and “It looks just like a library!” When our members tell us that they are happily surprised when visiting the temporary site, we know we have done a great job making the space functional and welcoming. It’s been an exciting four months, and we appreciate all the thoughts you have shared with us about this space - we know that our move was an adjustment for everyone. Interesting facts about our temporary space: In April and May 30,468 people visited the library 114,050 items were checked out 315 new library cards were issued Back at 355 Schoenbeck The weather has been on our side as the expansion of the main library at 355 Schoenbeck Road continues to move along at a great pace. I see the space evolve with every visit to the construction site, and it is exciting to see the foundation for future rooms that you, our community members, will gather in. You can follow the progress on the renovation website at www.itpld.org/renovation, where you can link to see up-to-date photos. And finally . . . I’m pleased to share that the Foundation for ITPLD has been selected as this year’s recipient of a portion of the proceeds from the Taste of the Town. This fundraising event is hosted by the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce and Wheeling’s Restaurant Row. Our Foundation Board will be at the Taste of the Town sharing ways you can get involved with the library. You'll find more information about the event on the back page.
Muriel Lischett 1922-2016
Muriel Lischett, March 1, 1968
Muriel Lischett, longtime Wheeling resident and one of the original founders of the Wheeling Library, passed away June 6. In 1955, Muriel led a small group who explored the possibility of establishing a public library in Wheeling. Three years later, she and other volunteers held a "Book and a Buck" drive, collecting more than 2,000 books and $450 in donations to form the nucleus that would grow to become the Indian Trails Public Library District. Muriel worked at the library for decades in various positions and passionately believed in the mission of the library to encourage literacy and bring books to the community. She will be missed.
