Feature Story
How partnerships help everyone As 2017 nears, we look forward to finalizing the details of our renovation project that have occupied a great deal of our energies over the past year. The next issue of your library newsletter will feature plans to move back to our renovated building, along with a preview of new services. In the meantime, I’d like to reflect on some of the things we have learned this past year and invite the whole community to participate in an event planned for early 2017. Since April 1, we have held nearly 300 adult programs, attended by almost 7,000 people. With minimal programming space available during our renovation, we have been fortunate to host programs through the generosity of the following organizations: Buffalo Grove Park District, RAM Restaurant & Brewery - Wheeling, National Louis University - Wheeling Campus, Wheeling Park District and the Village of Wheeling. Without the willingness of these organizations to allow us the use of their space, we would have had to significantly reduce our adult programming. Being able to host our programs off-site has helped members who have come to rely on library programs to learn something new or be entertained. The library has also benefited by attracting first-time participants to many of its programs, while our host organizations have benefited with new visitors to their facilities. In summary, we are all better off by partnering together. In December we will launch another type of partnership - a One Book, One Community program in collaboration with Vernon Area Public Library District and Cook Memorial Public Library District. This ambitious program will bring our three libraries together to host programs and a visit by Thrity Umrigar, author of The Story Hour. I invite you to join us at Indian Trails Library or one of our partner libraries for One Book, One Community programs. As we move into a new year, we will continue to partner with local organizations to provide stronger future offerings to our community.

About the Program
Three great neighbors, Vernon Area Public Library District, Indian Trails Public Library District and Cook Memorial Public Library District, invite our members to participate in an exciting joint program, One Book, One Community: Connecting Across Cultures. Our goal is to promote literacy, intercultural understanding and foster a sense of community by bringing our library districts together through literature. Our reading selection is The Story Hour by Thrity Umrigar.
About the Book
The Story Hour explores the relationship between Lakshmi, an Indian woman who tries to take her own life after immigrating to the U.S. and feeling trapped in a loveless marriage, and Maggie, the experienced psychologist who is in charge of her care.

Join speaker Vidya Nahar as she shares how to get in touch with your inner happiness and improve your mental health by using different laughter techniques. R
Author Visit: Thrity Umrigar Saturday, February 18, 1-2:30 pm Stevenson High School, West Auditorium, 1 Stevenson Dr., Lincolnshire Best-selling novelist Thrity Umrigar shares her journey as a fiction writer and the joys and challenges of the writing life. She discusses the inspiration for our One Book, One Community selection, The Story Hour. Thrity Umrigar is the author of six novels, including The Space Between Us, The World Be Found, The Weight of Heaven, Bombay Time, and If Today Be Sweet. Books will be available for purchasing and signing, courtesy of The Book Bin. This event is free and open to all. This two-day workshop includes instruction on care for infants and children, feeding and diapering, choking rescue, behavior management and babysitting ethics. Each student will receive a kit with an instruction book and backpack. You must attend both days to receive your Babysitting Completion Card. The Indian Trails Public Library District Board of Trustees meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:15 pm. The meeting is open to the public.
