Feature Story

Meet our members

High School Advisory Board Anyone who says teenagers today do nothing but eat, sleep and play video games has never met the High School Advisory Board (HSAB) of the Indian Trails Library! Two years ago Sarah Heimsoth, the library’s high school librarian, tapped into the creativity and enthusiasm of students from Wheeling, Buffalo Grove and Stevenson high schools to create the HSAB. Throughout the school year this dynamic and diverse group of 15 high schoolers devoted hours to making the library the place for teens to go by helping staff plan programs and work on projects. They have decorated windows, attended programs and most recently, walked with library trustees in the Buffalo Grove Days Parade. We thought it was time you got to learn more about these great teens! Artistic and musical, Cynthia (grade 10, Stevenson) loves helping out with small projects decorating the library windows. Robin (homeschooled) says being part of the advisory board is a good way to learn about programs and likes suggesting program ideas. Jasleen (grade 11, Buffalo Grove) likes reading nonfiction and would love going back in time to witness the history of her religion. Although it’s Jenniferís(grade 9, Wheeling) first year on the HSAB, she is all about getting out of her comfort zone, just like her favorite book character, Katniss Everdeen, from the Hunger Games trilogy. Cover photos: HSAB and teen volunteers.

Are you interest ed in joining the High School Advisory Board? Look for more inform ation in the summer and fall newsletters or contact Sarah He imsoth at sheimsoth@it pld.org

Sierra (grade 12, Buffalo Grove) is a founding member of the HSAB and heading to Michigan State University next fall to study advertising and writing. What she remembers most about the library is the behind-thescenes library tour where she learned how the “magic” happens. Pranathiís(grade 9, Stevenson) favorite memory is when she got her first library card in second grade and checked out the entire Nancy Drew series. Vanessa (grade 12, Wheeling) isn’t sure where she’ll go to college, but she knows she wants to study abroad. She might even take her favorite book with her – Running Out of Time – because the plot twist is so interesting.

Working behind the scenes is what Irene (grade 11, Wheeling) likes about being part of the HSAB. She loves attending the teen programs at the library and spends her free time dancing, reading and swimming. When she isn’t at the library or school, Grace (grade 9, Buffalo Grove) spends her time in pottery class or taking Tae Kwon Do. Her favorite authors include David Clement-Davies, Brandon Mull and Rick Riordan. A jazz musician, Emily (grade 11, Buffalo Grove) is one of the founding members of the HSAB and has many fond memories of the summer reading program. She would love to jump inside a Harry Potter book or The Phantom Tollbooth.

ìWhat I like most about volunteering is expressing my ideas and hearing what other people think.î

Elisha (grade 9, homeschooled) knows that if the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came to life, the first thing he would do is tour Willa Wonka’s factory! Sounds yummy to us.
