From the Director

Renovation Timeline

In just over a month, we will break ground for the renovation of our library. The groundbreaking represents the culmination of years of careful planning by the board of library trustees and library staff, with input from the community. For those of you who are new to our community, here’s a brief history on how we got to where we are. The Wheeling Public Library was started in 1958, when the Wheeling Women’s Club solicited books and funds to start a library to serve the semi-rural areas of Wheeling and Buffalo Grove. In 1974, the name was officially changed to Indian Trails Public Library District to better reflect the multiple communities it served. After outgrowing its space three times, the library moved to its current location (355 Schoenbeck) in 1981. The first expansion began in 1995 and was held in two phases, with the final phase completed in 1998. By 2010, the library had once again outgrown its space and needed to be renovated to adapt to the dramatic changes occurring in libraries. Four years of in-depth planning and assessment began in 2010 (see sidebar) and in mid-2014, staff began working with architects to design a library that would reflect what our members wanted in their library.

We started with a clear goal—to transform our library into a vibrant, active and engaging community space for our 67,000 residents both today and into the future. After countless meetings with trustees, staff, architect and designers, that space will soon be a reality. If you’ve been in the library recently, you may have noticed the slideshow of 3D renderings of the proposed renovation and seen the displays of the color palette and fabrics in the vestibule. Our designers have selected textures and colors that will bring a vibrancy and warmth to the library, as well as timeless design. You will see more changes this month, as staff begins packing books and materials in preparation for our closing at 5 pm, March 20, our last day of service at this address until spring 2017. The library will close for two weeks while materials and equipment are moved and installed at our temporary location. We will reopen Monday, April 4, at 70 W. Dundee Rd. in Buffalo Grove, just one mile west of our current location. On behalf of the library board of trustees and staff, I thank you for your support of this project. I hope you will join us on April 2 at 355 Schoenbeck for the groundbreaking and April 4 for the reopening at our temporary location. I encourage you to visit www.itpld.org/renovation to stay updated on the renovation. We are tremendously excited to take this next step in our library’s history by creating a space that will serve our community now and in the future. Brian D. Shepard 2

Q. Why did you decide to get involved with the Foundation? Mike: I grew up spending a lot of time visiting the Oak Lawn Public Library. While studying for my MBA I had a specific area of the Mount Prospect Public Library where I went. Now I have a 6-yearold and spend time at Indian Trails looking for Level 2 Easy Readers, and will occasionally check out a Wii game. (Lego Indiana Jones has been our favorite.) The library is different to ‘who’ you are, ‘where’ you are and even ‘when’ you are. But it is always a valuable resource and I want a role in making sure ours is effectively available to our community. Q. What do you hope to accomplish on the Foundation? Mike: The Foundation’s primary purpose is to raise funds. I bring years of experience in fundraising via the Mount Prospect/Arlington Heights Rotary Club as well president of the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce where I have co-chaired the golf outing committee the last two years. I like to imagine myself as a valuable resource and contributor to the future success of the Foundation. Q. What three words describe you? Mike: Thirsty for knowledge. Q. What book would you recommend to a friend? Mike: "Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson. Q. Complete this sentence: In a perfect world, a library ..... Mike: is as celebrated as a new casino!
