Feature Story

October is Family History Month

Looking for the trail

of your ancestors By Celeste Kuta, Adult Reference Librarian Celeste Kuta's paternal grandparents, Rozalia Witek and Stanley Kuta, married Sept. 3, 1912 in St. John Cantius Church, Chicago.

P

eople are curious about their family’s history for many reasons. I wondered, who are my great-grandparents? I didn’t know their names, and the people who might have known were no longer living. What do I do next? Fortunately, my curiosity about these distant relatives happened at a time when interest in genealogy (the study of the descent of a person, family or group from an ancestor) was rapidly increasing due to the digitization of documents typically used when tracing family lines. As I became familiar with our library’s databases that held the clues to my family’s story, I learned there was much more to this hobby than collecting names and dates. Ancestry Library Edition can provide many of the vital facts you’re looking for, but our newspaper databases, Access NewspaperARCHIVE and NewsBank, contain obituaries that can serve as a mini-biography of your ancestor. You may discover a lengthy account of a wedding, or an advertisement of a business owned by your grandfather. Access these databases at www.indiantrailslibrary.org/research/genealogy.html and view a list of some of my favorite genealogy websites. (Ancestry Library Edition is only available inside the library.)

When I receive emails or telephone calls from out-of-state genealogists who are looking for information about a former Wheeling resident, I often rely on the sources at the Wheeling Historical Museum. (The Raupp Museum is a fantastic resource for Buffalo Grove history.) On the contrary, if your research is focused on other parts of the country, don’t forget to contact the local library or society in that geographic area. Some family researchers have received family tree documents and pedigree charts that have been carefully maintained through the years. Others are just getting their feet wet. Experienced or not, you are welcome to join the monthly Genealogy Interest Group that meets at the library on the second Wednesday of each month. It’s an opportunity to use Ancestry Library Edition and learn from other attendees. In honor of Family History Month in October, we are offering two sessions on learning the basics of genealogy, using the library’s resources and more. You can find more information about all our genealogy programs on page 11. I can’t wait to meet you and help you on your journey to discovering your family’s history.

View a special display of the Indian Trails Library’s history on your next visit to the Wheeling Historical Museum. Wheeling Historical Museum 251 N. Wolf Rd., Wheeling www.wheelinghistoricalsociety.com

Adult Reference Librarian, Celeste Kuta, presents the display she created documenting the library's history through the years.

Open Sundays (April through October 30), 2-4 pm or by appointment, 847.537.3119
