LEAVING ON A JET PLANE–AND FINDING JOY AT THE AIRPORT, PAGE 10

While travel is on my mind most of the year, in the summer, my backyard is the farthest I want to go. I live near Cultus Lake, BC, a place people come to from all over the world. Our backyard has been turned into a little Austin, Texas Honky Tonk meets Margaritaville-style bar called the Tipsy Flamingo. And we have a fair-sized creek behind our place surrounded by forests, trails and mountains. For me, the quintessential summer travel experience is 15 steps out of my backdoor.

In the summer, I want to be swimming as much as possible. My favourite little oasis is the Shuswap in BC, from the beach at Little Shuswap in Chase to Scotch Creek on Big Shuswap. And at night, it’s easy to stargaze so I can learn more about astronomy than just spotting the Big and Little Dippers!

For me, there has to be a beach involved. Come summer, I love travelling to spots in Canada where I’ll find a gorgeous stretch of sand, including Tofino on the west coast, where I can watch the surfers and comb the shore for treasures, and Summerville Beach in Nova Scotia on the Atlantic Ocean for swims perfect for cooling off on a hot day.

Making Summer Memories

Thanks to long, sunny days and warm nights, summer has always felt like the ideal time for connecting and making memories with the people we love. In this issue, we’ve put together a diverse collection of travel destinations and inspiration perfect for maximizing quality time with family, friends, or anyone else you care about.

When it comes to romance, our writers have uncovered a few ways to add some extra love to your next vacation. For starters, we have a story on six scenic destinations for an epic “I Do,” from Greece to the Maldives. We also take you to the white sand beaches of Anguilla where it’s almost impossible not to feel romantic, and to Maui for an unforgettable vow renewal with a traditional Hawai’ian twist.

For travelling families, we’ve got recommendations for cruises that pack a serious punch when it comes to fun–think theme parks, offshore adventures and unique learning opportunities right on the ship. We’ve also got tips for exploring Galveston, which happens to have a rich pirate history kids are sure to love. Any families who are flying this summer may want to take a look at one writer’s tips for making the most of your time at the airport to help minimize any travel-related stress.

And since road trips are a classic summer activity (and one that I love), we’ve got some great ideas for curated itineraries courtesy of three companies that take the stress out of planning an open-

road adventure. When you’re ready to get packing, don’t miss our roundup of beach bag essentials perfect for an idyllic day on the sand.

We also take you off the beaten path to St. Vincent & The Grenadines, a Caribbean paradise that remains just outside the mainstream lens (but likely not for long). And if riding the rails is more your speed, join us on one writer’s train journey through the American Southwest aboard the iconic Rocky Mountaineer, complete with eagle sightings.

But when it all comes down to it, a vacation isn’t always just about where you go—it’s often about the experiences you have along the way. On a recent trip to Barbados with my daughter, I discovered that sometimes the simplest moments can be the most meaningful. In our case, it was the subtle but impactful ways we connected with each other, as well as the connections we made with locals that really made our trip so special.

So sit back and let us take you on a journey to some amazing places. Whether you’re planning your own trip or just dreaming of one for now, Travel Life is here to help inspire and guide you.

Cheers to making lasting summer memories no matter where you travel!

Leaving on a Jet Plane–and

Finding Joy at the Airport

Start your vacation off on the right foot by embracing the pre-flight experience and making the most of your time at the airport

The headlines are full of how awful air travel is these days. I get that. Likely, so do you. Perhaps I am an eternal optimist, or maybe I just decided quite some time ago that travel is a part of my life, so I had better find a way to make it fun. Whatever the reason, I actually enjoy my time in

airports–a lot. The thing is, you can make your trip so much better if you prepare a bit, go with the flow and just decide that it’s going to be a good experience.

Let’s start with the practical side of things–like dressing for travel. It is important to be comfortable–

10 TRAVEL LIFE.CA SUMMER 2023 | JOURNALS FINDING JOY

not just for the flight but also for getting through security. Understand that you will likely have to take off coats, sweaters, shoes, belts and any big jewellery at security. Pack your carry-on so you can easily access your liquids and laptop. Just doing this decreases frustration substantially.

Arriving at the airport early is a game changer. Being worried about getting to your gate ruins everything. Get there early, check your bag (if you have one) and go through security and customs as soon as possible. That way, a long lineup won’t send you into a meltdown. And if it all works out, you’ll have time for a coffee or a glass of wine, which is always a win in my book!

Once you are through, take a breath and remind yourself that your vacation has started. Of course, access to a lounge provides a nice quiet place to relax. If you have this option, find a spot and enjoy the moment. Lounges always

feel like a treat and are worth the splurge, if you can.

There are often great things to see and do in the main area, too. The people-watching can be fabulous–and it’s different in every airport. Find a spot where you can see the flow going by and settle in. Human behaviour is fascinating at any time–at airports, even more so. There are so many things going on. And maybe it’s okay to feel a bit superior as you sit there all happy when you see someone who is flat-out sprinting to the gate because they didn’t get there early enough. But find some compassion too. We’ve all been there!

Some airports have spots where you can get a pedicure or a massage, and there are often places to get your shoes shined (which is an oldschool way to give yourself a lift!). Most airports have shops–I gravitate to books or local food items, while others might be interested in accessories, clothing or destinationspecific souvenirs. Window shopping works, too, so it doesn’t have to be

an expensive pastime.

Airports have all kinds of options for refreshments–from coffee to cocktails. If you arrive early, it’s a treat to sit down and have a bite to eat. Quite often, the food and drinks have a regional influence and that’s always a good option–even if you live there. I tend to order things I might not have a chance to try otherwise, giving me that little “already-on-mytrip” boost.

Going into the actual “travel” part of your trip with a bit of a sense of adventure and a sense of humour can make a big difference. In my experience, if you decide that travel is a real pain, it likely will be. We get what we look for–and airports are no exception. Take a chance and think of it as an enjoyable part of the journey and watch what happens. It might surprise you!

In my humble opinion, these are the best airports for food, shopping and people watching:

Expert tips for a great sleep on vacation

Ispend a ridiculous amount of time analyzing photos of hotel mattresses before booking a stay and at last I have justification. According to “The Sleep Doctor,” Dr. Michael Breus, “27.6 per cent of U.S. adults who factor mattress types into their decision when finding somewhere to sleep on vacation sleep an hour more on average each night while travelling.” This is especially important for light sleepers like me. An hour of sound sleep can make all the difference, especially on a long distance trip.

If the thought of jet lag makes you shudder, you’re not alone. Over one-third of adults sleep less than the recommended seven hours each night, so losing more sleep en route can lead to poor concentration, changes in mood and travel fatigue. Just what you don’t need when you’re going through customs at a foreign airport.

ENROUTE ESSENTIALS FOR BETTER SLEEP

Elite athletes who travel constantly for games and tournaments are coached on how to adjust their sleep schedules to avoid jet lag. The rule is to go to bed one hour earlier each night for a few days when travelling east on any trip that covers two or more time zones. If you’re going west, hurray! You can catch up on the shows you’ve missed while you stay up an hour later.

Once you’re in the air, eye masks, headphones and ear plugs are your friends. At take-off, set your watch to the local time at your destination and sleep when appropriate. Avoid dehydration by saying yes to every offer of water and no to alcohol. When you wake up, stand up and stretch a few times to keep your circulation going. Airlines usually serve meals for overseas flights, so wake up to indulge, but watch your caffeine intake. It could keep you overly

alert when you land. If you’re constantly chilly on airplanes like I am, bring along a pashmina or a light warm blanket. It’s the number one accessory that helps travellers sleep, according to a recent study by Dr. Breus. And if you need your plushie, bring it. No judgement.

TIPS FOR ONCE YOU ARRIVE

Upon arrival at an unfamiliar destination, there’s bound to be a bit of stress involved with picking up your luggage (hopefully it arrived when you did), and then finding your way to your accommodations while sleep deprived. Google map and research your options before leaving home or book an online transfer service in advance. Kiwitaxi operates between airports and hotels in 120 countries.

As soon as you get settled in your comfy hotel room (you did research the bed, right?), try and go for a walk if it’s sunny. Your circadian rhythms will reset faster. Although, ignoring my own advice, I couldn’t resist staying up to watch the stars fill the sky in Maui after an overnight flight. Unpack your favourite sleep shirt, your beach book and perhaps even a photo of loved ones to make your hotel room feel like home. If you have sleep apnea, a widely undiagnosed condition that makes you wake up constantly due to clogged breathing passages, don’t let that stop you. Look for new travel size CPAP machines that weigh less than a pound. If there’s a pillow menu pick your favorite. Then stick to the local time schedule. Take an afternoon nap if you need to. Just 30 minutes is the length of time the Mayo Clinic recommends.

After you arrive home, relaxed and refreshed, continue to practice what’s called good sleep hygiene. Go to sleep at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. Keep screens of all kinds out of the bedroom. The blue light will hinder your body’s melatonin production and keep you awake. And don’t stay in bed if you can’t sleep. Read a book, try meditation, or deep breathing until you get sleepy, then close your eyes and dream about your next vacation.

Theme Parks at Sea and So Much More:

THE BEST FAMILY CRUISE EXPERIENCES

Exciting and wondrous experiences await kids, parents and multi-generational families taking to the water for vacation.

Record-Breaking Fun

There’s a new generation of megaships built by the big, family-focused cruise lines that are going head to head to come up with the biggest, most extravagant theme-park style activities at sea. Norwegian Prima is the first of a new class of ships for Norwegian Cruise Line, and the Norwegian’s designers filled this 4,500-person ship with family innovations galore.

Speed demons will love the first three-level race track at sea. Norwegian is the only cruise line with go-karts and the Prima Speedway takes it to three whole new levels. The racetrack is over a quarter-mile long, circling the funnel of the ship, with 14 nail-biting turns at speeds reaching over 30mph–all in the open ocean air. Then there’s The Drop, the world’s first dry freefall slide with a 10-storey plunge–more G-force than an F1 race car. And The Rush: duelling dry slides that will provide an exciting outlet for the competitive members of your family.

As part of the kids’ Aqua Park and Main Pool area, Norwegian has also introduced its first Tidal Wave waterslide featuring gushing surfs for guests on innertubes to try and catch the best wave.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas debuts in early 2024. She will be the largest ship in the world, with nearly 10,000 passengers and crew aboard. We’ve already been given a sneak peak at Icon’s upcoming family fun.

Icon of the Seas will be home to the largest water park at sea. Over 17,000 square feet in size, it’s name:

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas
INSIDE CRUISING FAMILY CRUISE

‘Category 6,’ represents its six, recordbreaking water slides, and a play on words of the most extreme level of tropical storm.

That’s the theme of the waterslides: Pressure Drop, the industry’s first open free-fall slide off a 45-degree angle drop; Frightening Bolt, the tallest drop slide at sea with a 46-foot drop and a 360-degree loop; Storm Surge and Hurricane Hunter, the first raft slides where four people can ride together and boomerang off of a lotus leaf while facing incredible ocean views; and Storm Chasers, cruising’s first matracing duo along 431-foot slides.

Exploring Exotic Seas

Paul Gauguin Cruises’ Moana Explorer Program in the South Pacific offers families a completely different pace and way to experience life at sea. Paul Gauguin Cruises has teamed up with a South Pacific marine education and conservation foundation to provide kids on dedicated family voyages hands-on, interactive

activities on board and ashore showcasing the natural wonders and cultures of the region.

Kids can discover their inner naturalist and the whole family can bond over activities including visiting a sea turtle care centre, hiking volcanic mountains, snorkelling lagoons, conducting water experiments, creating natural jewellery, designing a Polynesian tattoo and more.

History and Culture on European Rivers and Beyond

With only 100-200 guests on river ships, you get to know the other passengers, and on dedicated family cruises, kids can make new friends while sailing by river into the heart of a destination.

Emerald Cruises’ Dedicated Family River Cruises were designed for multi-generational families to explore Europe together.

On a Rhine family river cruise, in addition to seeing the biggest collection of riverside castles in Europe, you can take a canoe trip on the legendary river, go geocaching and visit Anne Frank House.

On the Danube itinerary, families can visit a quirky museum and interact with the art, take part in a cooking class on a Slovakian farm, or take an archery lesson at a castle.

Emerald Cruises is the only river cruise line with a heated pool with a retractable roof, and families can enjoy pool activities with the ship’s wellness coach, wheelhouse tours with the captain, movies in the ship’s cinema and cooking lessons with the chef. Poolside ice cream is served daily.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ special Generations Collection is tailor-made for families, including kid-friendly menus, onboard activities such as dessert making with the ship’s pastry chef, a lounge for kids with movies, video games and dedicated Family Hosts, complimentary bicycles to explore riverside towns independently and family-focused shore excursions that bring local history and culture to life.

They’re available in Europe on the Rhine, Danube and the Netherlands, and even in Egypt, where activities include a soccer game with local children, sand dune boarding, a swim in the Nile, a traditional felucca sailboat ride and a visit to the wheelhouse to learn about navigating a ship on the Nile.

No matter where your family’s interests lie–from nature and history, to thrills and adventure, there’s a cruise option that fits the bill for multi-generational fun.

POP-UPS, SPEAKEASIES AND WELCOME TO NASHVILLE’S COVERT COCKTAIL SCENE

POP-UPS & HIDDEN BARS

There is no shortage of cocktail bars worthy of a visit in Nashville, Tennessee. So much so, it can be a mind-boggling conundrum choosing–and choosing wisely. This author’s advice would be to narrow your options by selecting a theme. To that end, there’s no more current, on point trend than speakeasy-style establishments–especially those that go the extra mile, featuring time capsule-esque décor, classic, prohibition-era cocktails and house-made bitters and infusions. From the bar, thoughtfully curated cocktails are named for country music’s top stars, while private liquor cabinets ensure top-shelf spirits are always on-hand for members. Located in a minimalist, industrial space that once housed a motorcycle repair shop, this smallyet-mighty cocktail lab takes no reservations, nor does it even have a menu. Instead, talented bartenders will ask what you like, or don’t, then concoct bespoke and mindbogglingly good cocktails. Bitters are made in-house, eggs used for flips, sours and other frothy tipples are organic and free-range, and chunks of ice are chiseled to order and shaped to fit your glass. It’s cocktail bar theatrics at its best.

THE TWELVE THIRTY CLUB

Co-owned by Justin Timberlake and consisting of three separate, stacked venues under one roof, The Twelve Thirty Club features live music hub, Honky Tonk on ground level, the stylish Supper Club and adjacent rooftop bar on the third floor and the private, members only Honorary Member lounge and VIP venue in-between. Even without being able to gain access to the second floor, the Supper Club more than delivers on the opulence, with plush and private banquettes and superlative cuisine in a swanky, sophisticated setting.

During summer months, hit the rooftop for its Mediterranean-inspired Pool Club oasis, complete with city vistas for miles. For dinner, head to lobby-level Commons Club to nosh on inspired, modern Southern fare, beginning with steamed mussels in fennel and curry butter, then onwards to lobster spaghetti with peas and pecorino. like an Italian HOW T O EAT

Simple tips for making your next visit to Italy even more delicious

WHERE TO GO?

Who doesn’t love Italian food? From pasta to gelato, divine cheeses and even more divine wines, the choice is endless. And I promise it all tastes better in Italy. But dining in Italy is more than just sitting down and tucking in. There are some customs which may be new, odd and complicated for visitors. So let me be your private maitre d’ on a little tour of how to eat in my favourite country.

The most informal spot will be called a “bar” (more of a casual resto than a watering hole), with sandwiches, pastries and coffee. Tell the cashier what you want and pay for it, then take the scrontino (receipt) to the service counter to receive your food. If you walk in, sit down and wait for service, you might be sitting a long time!

Going up the food chain you have casual options like a tavolo caldo (hot table), enoteca (wine bar) and pizzeria with limited offerings, or a more “formal” osteria, small trattoria and ristorante. Here you can expect to pay a coperto of €1.50 to €3 per person, a non-negotiable charge to cover the setting of the table and serving of bread (even if you don’t eat it). This usually replaces tipping, though a cash gratuity of five to 10 per cent for good

service will be appreciated. Just check your bill to be sure you have not been charged servizio or you will be tipping on top of the tip.

READING THE MENU

An Italian menu can be pages long and quite overwhelming. A full meal comprises four courses: antipasto (appetizer); primo piatto (pasta or soup); secondo piatto (meat and fish, sometimes priced by weight). Vegetables, contorni, are usually listed and priced separately. Then, just like home, comes dolce (dessert, pronounced “dol-cheh”). No wonder Italians love to linger over a meal!

But you don’t have to indulge in all of this: it’s perfectly fine if, like many, you want only two courses, and lots of eateries offer a fixed price menu of two or three courses. Whatever you choose, just be sure you don’t cut up your pasta or you may make your waiter weep. (Italians never cut up their pasta. Ask for a spoon if necessary).

Lastly, if you have food concerns such as allergies, get them translated into Italian and have a small card to show the waiter prior to your visit. You may save yourself time, confusion–and more.

Arriving from the Austin airport by Uber, our driver inadvertently pulls up at the Lake Austin Spa Resort’s LakeHouse Spa, rather than the front doors of the property. No worries. Wandering the short distance along its manicured walkways we pass two pools, one in a rustic barn, walk through a wooden arched gate and traverse a trellis-covered path before we see our first glimpses of the green lake on which this resort rests.

Its location on Lake Austin, actually a part of Texas’s Colorado River, is a key aspect of its wellness offerings. Whether “in, on or beside” the lake, the resort embraces the philosophy of marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, who in his book Blue Mind , describes the healing powers of water. The leading wellness retreat in Texas Hill Country, Lake Austin Spa Resort has received accolades worldwide for its 25,000 square foot spa, varied and innovative “Ripple Effects” fitness programming, wellness and lake activities, delicious food and stunning lakeside property. in the 1940s, had a short-lived stint as a nudist camp in the mid-70s and then in the late 70s became a camp to lodge cowboys and rodeo clowns. After that was its incarnation as a “fat farm,” at a time when health was focused on weight loss. It was not until 1994 that the retreat was renamed the Lake Austin Spa Resort with a focus on active healthy living and fitness—without the calorie counting.

The resort has only 40 cottage-style guest rooms, accommodating up to 80 guests (or slightly more with families). So having more than 20 daily all-inclusive activities—plus the option of private add-on experiences, personal training and other outings—makes the experience feel very personalized. Guests also have

access to their LakeHouse Spa, which has 30 treatment rooms, including a private outdoor suite with in-ground tub, two acres of terraced gardens, two pools and the luxurious “Blue Room” salon.

IN, OFF AND NEXT TO WATER

With geography as integral to the experience, water can be seen from almost every vantage point. Guest rooms are arranged in a row, each overlooking the lake, with wicker outdoor furniture and covered awnings out front to enjoy coffee in the morning. They have a beautiful second-floor Treehouse Studio for some of the classes, a glassed-in lake view fitness centre, and even Bokken-do, a way of learning and practising traditional Japanese sword skills, taught by Japanese-trained David Robbins under a massive magnolia

tree.

Aquatic classes are offered in their rustic-chic Pool Barn, a 90-degree junior Olympic-size pool with garage style doors. Pool classes include their Wellness on the Waters workout, which is conducted on inflatable paddleboard-style mats tethered together on the water; their Flute and Float class, where you can listen to meditative flute music as you float on a buoyancy mat; and the popular Myofascial Release class, where the instructor offers each of us of a sampling of “assisted stretching” of the fascia or fibrous connective tissue. Only five minutes, and I felt a release from muscle pain for the entire day!

We also have access to hydro bikes, kayaks and paddleboards and enjoy a swim in the lake. Even some of the hikes (of which there is a three-and five-mile option daily) are accessed by short pontoon ride. One morning, we take a boat to Austin’s 215acre Common Fords Ranch Metropolitan Park. We do a loop trail in the prairie region of the park with a birding, flora and fauna specialist and a hiking guide for faster paced walkers. As soon as we disembark, we see a great blue heron on the lawn and look up to admire a red shouldered hawk in a tree. Pecan trees cover our heads as we walk, and wild grape vines soar in the tree canopies alongside us. We arrive at a slow-moving waterfall before circling back to the pontoon.

MINDFUL DINING

Stays at the resort are all-inclusive, which—as well as activities—includes not just three meals a day, but healthy snacks, tea and coffee that you can help yourself to, and daily smoothies or frozen yoghurts (that are there for the asking). Executive

chef Stéphane Beaucamp uses locally sourced ingredients (some from their own organic gardens), to create what he refers to as “conscientious cuisine,” which focuses on flavour, nutrition and balance.

We had almost all of our meals on their outdoor lakeside patio, but you can also eat indoors in their lakeside dining room, have lunch at the spa’s Aster Café—for healthy salads, power bowls and wellness shots—or request room service.

The resort also offers a weekly cocktail class as well as culinary demonstrations. The week I was there, personal chef Danny Kievit showed us how to create tasty sandwiches for a springtime tea party. And for the cocktail class, we learn how to make “tipsy Texan” drinks with tequila and peach liqueur, cranberry juice and ginger ale. Other culinary events include chef-led cooking classes and a monthly culinary week featuring chefs from the Food Network, well-known eateries and cookbook chef-authors.

WELLNESS–BROADLY DEFINED

As I was to discover, wellness is broadly defined at this resort. At their “plein air” wildflower watercolour class, the instructor encourages us to enjoy the creative release and flow, without worrying about being good or bad at painting. One evening an astronomer hosts a talk about “The Stars at Night” and another day there is a tarot reading. There are author’s nights each month, wine cruises are available daily and inspirational talks are given on such topics as learning how to activate your neuroplasticity to boost memory.

What I can attest to, is feeling very “well” after spending three days at the resort.

Lose the Crowd and Find Your Other IN Anguilla

Apicture-perfect sunset on Anguilla’s Meads Bay is a near-nightly occurrence. The waters embracing this seductive Caribbean island are painted an irresistible aquamarine, but now, as the sun starts to dip, a swathe of fire burnishes their surface.

Sipping wine in the hot tub gracing the balcony of our penthouse suite at Tranquility Beach Resort, my wife and I take in the spectacle. A mere handful of people occupy the nearby beach.

Anguilla’s tourism motto is “Lose the Crowd. Find Yourself,” but this evening I modify it slightly.

We’ve lost the crowd and we’ve begun to find each other.

A TABLE FOR TWO

While tonight’s sunset is spectacular, last night’s light show was no less delicious–partly due to our clifftop table at Malliouhana Resort’s Celeste restaurant, partly due to the world’s best lobster bisque and grilled snapper. Look no further than the Caribbean’s culinary capital if you’re yearning for a romantic table for two. One day we park ourselves at a beachside table for lunch at Da’Vida. One evening we sample another perfect sunset at Jacala, our table for two located in an elegant setting mere metres from one of Anguilla’s most beautiful beaches.

If you want to experience a sunset up close and personal, forego dinner

one evening and book a sunset cruise on “Tradition,” a classic West Indian sailing sloop, sampling hors d’oeuvres and sipping champagne cocktails holding hands with your significant other. One thing’s for sure: whether you dine clifftop or beachside, whether you share a table for two at lunch or dinner, dining in Anguilla is an irresistible recipe for romance.

liquid melodies of steel pans, or just lounge on the beach, sipping wine from their extensive list. A day on an island made just for you.

ON ANGUILLA LIFE IS A BEACH

AN ISLAND JUST FOR YOU

One ingredient in your recipe for romance may well include some quality time on an entire island made just for you. It’s no mere coincidence that one of the boats ferrying you out to Sandy Island, a tiny atoll reclining just off Anguilla’s coast, is called “Happiness,” another called “Bliss.” These emotions characterize your day here, whether you stroll the entire island hand-in-hand, samba to the

A perfect beach is key to any romantic getaway. Populate that beach with a minimum of people and I’ll be pledging undying love. That’s why Anguilla makes my pulse race. With over 30 beaches gracing the island, you’re sure to find one to share with that special someone, but a handful stand out if romance is part of the equation. Meads Bay, our own base of operations, is downright gorgeous, with the added advantage of some great bars and restaurants. Shoal Bay may well be the most popular beach here (and even then it’s never particularly crowded), but if you really want to turn up the temperature consider Katouche Beach (don’t tell anyone about it), Little Bay (accessible only by boat), Maundays Bay, or Cove Bay, one of my favourites with its stunning views of the emerald mountains of St. Martin to the south.

ON ANGUILLA LIFE IS A BEACH (BAR)

Looking for libations to lubricate your beach-time romance? Then check out Savi Beach Club on Meads Bay, Anguilla’s newest and most elegant watering hole. Think comfortable

designer couches, a polished stone bar and handcrafted cocktails like the irresistible Pina Asada, their take on the more traditional Piña Colada. If you seek a more laidback vibe but want to keep the romance sizzling, consider Dune Preserve (once rated “World’s Best Beach Bar” by CNN Travel) or Sunshine Shack, a windswept minimalist establishment on Rendezvous Bay. Elvis’ at Sandy Ground, with its bar constructed from the hull of a traditional sailing sloop, is one of my favourite hangouts, but you’re sure to find your own romantic retreat.

AN ISLAND TO FIND YOUR OTHER Anguilla’s unspoiled vibe has long made it a haunt of the rich and famous. “Celebrities visit St. Barth’s to be seen,” one local told me. “They come here to hide.” That vibe also contributes to its appeal as a romantic retreat. It’s the ideal island to lose the crowds, and as I reflect on my last day in Anguilla, decide it’s also the perfect island to find your other.

Hawai’i Making Memories in

A vow renewal in Maui is a dream come true and one filled with Hawaiian culture, unforgettable sunsets and romance at every turn

Aloha. It’s a word that visitors to Hawai’i are accustomed to hearing. It means hello, goodbye and also love, which brought my partner Brian and I to Maui in April this year. We were going to renew our vows. To us, it’s a destination where romance can be found everywhere.

Revisiting Romance–Hawaiian Style

When we first visited together eight years ago, Hawai’i got under our skin in a good way. We fell hard for its charms, balmy weather, ocean breezes, long ribbons of golden sand and legendary hospitality, where visitors are treated like ‘ohana (family)–something at the core of the local culture.

Once we decided to get married, we pictured ourselves back there committing to life as husband and wife. But alas, we all know how and why travel

was derailed for a couple of years so we didn’t get to make it official in Hawaii. A vow renewal coupled with a honeymoon was the next best thing.

Paradise Found on Ka’anapali Beach

Our favourite spot on Maui is Ka’anapali Beach, which stretches almost five kilometres on the island’s west shore. The area has a great blend of restaurants, as well as 30 hotels of various sizes that offer a range of activities, from snorkelling to hula lessons. It’s clear why TripAdvisor picked it as the best beach in the U.S. for 2023.

We kicked off our trip with a stay at Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, the most authentically Hawaiian of all the properties along the strip. It has a full slate of complimentary classes focused on sharing the beauty of Hawaiian culture. We learned about the navigation techniques used by early travellers to cross the Pacific

and explored the beauty of the Hawaiian language, which would come in handy later during my vows to my husband.

The hotel has a charm of its own. It’s not the grandest in the area, but it has a warmth that makes you feel like you belong. Though we stayed just a couple of days, the staff of its new beachfront restaurant, Huihui, already knew our usual breakfast order and penchant for poke (diced raw fish marinated in soy sauce). Strolling back to our room after dinner, Brian picked up a white frangipani blossom that had fallen and tucked it behind my ear. Sometimes it’s the small things that are the most meaningful.

Stargazing, Mai Tais and Hula Dancers

The Sheraton Maui is a busy resort with 508 rooms, but it’s easy to find quiet spots. We booked a private dinner in a beachfront bungalow, where we held hands and took in the rainbow of hues

left behind as the sun sank into the horizon. Other than a lone server and some kids jumping off Black Rock into the water off in the distance, we felt like we had it all to ourselves. We sipped mai tais and shared bites of filet mignon, grilled fish and pineapple crème brûlée until only the light of the tiki torches nearby remained. We woke up the next day thinking about exchanging our vows. First though, we had to tick off a couple of things from our Hawaiian bucket list–attending a luau and star gazing under Maui’s dark, clear skies. The Hyatt Regency Maui offered both.

Its award-winning version of a luau, Drums of the South Pacific, was enchanting–hula dancers with supple wrists and lithe hips, a quartet singing classic Hawaiian tunes and ample servings of slow-cooked pork, teriyaki chicken, garden salad and taro buns with passionfruit-infused butter.

We followed that with a Tour of the Stars, the hotel’s rooftop astronomy program. Through high-tech HD telescopes, we could see constellations, planets and stars, like Betelgeuse (a.k.a. “Beetle Juice”). Its light takes almost 650 light years to reach Earth–a humbling reminder that our time on this planet is but a mere blip, so make the most of it.

Vow Renewal–Hawaiian Style

On a sunny afternoon, I made my way to

the hotel’s Oriental Gardens, carrying a bouquet of white orchids. My husband was waiting for me alongside Tino, a Mauiborn officiant who blew a conch shell three times to signify a ceremony was taking place and offered a blessing of our union.

In keeping with Hawaiian wedding customs, my husband and I exchanged lei–a ti leaf version for him and white orchids for me—before exchanging vows. I said he was my guiding hoku (star), my ‘ohana (family) and would have my aloha (love) until the end of our days together. Happy tears and a memory of our time in Maui that will last a lifetime.

freshness is key. Cocoa and coffee also grow here, transforming their respective beans into some of the most natural, mouth-watering and irresistible ambrosia you have likely ever tasted. Chickens, sheep and goats are all freerange, while tuna, snapper, conch and lobster are plentiful on grills across the land.

Treat yourself to a truly remote island retreat offering everything from volcano hikes and waterfalls, to pristine beaches and excellent food

It’s not every day the Kardashians are denied access to an island resort. Except here, where the first rule of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is, don’t talk about St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Those who’ve experienced its contagious charm are reluctant to even pinpoint its exact location, risking word getting out. Who can blame them? Surrounded by notable travel powerhouses, this

unpretentious eastern Caribbean jewel generally flies under the radar, preferring to stay true to its core as an unspoilt Eden that guarantees to put you square in the middle of the soothing screensaver you’ve been staring at, and dreaming of.

CONNECTING WITH VISITORS THROUGH FOOD AND RUM

While its rustic remoteness and serene spirit are slowly making the rounds among international travellers, SVG’s flavours and aromas are also making people festive, and hungry. Thanks to its rich, fertile soil, SVG grows bountiful harvests of everything from tomatoes and cassava, to bananas and mango. And considering farms that grow these gifts from nature are less than 50 kilometres away from any given market,

Rum is an award-winning pastime in these parts, notably Captain Bligh XO Aged Rum which won World’s Best Rum in 2014 at the World Rum Awards in the U.K, and Sunset Strong which won World’s Best Over Proof Rum in 2016. It’s widely believed that what separates rums of this region from others produced in the Caribbean is the volcanic filtered water used to make them. Regardless of whether you’re a brown or white rum connoisseur, appreciating its blended local inspired flavours is just what your Caribbean adventure ordered.

EXPLORE ST. VINCENT

Traces of French and English influence abound throughout the country, including in Kingstown, where the so-called “City of Arches” has over 400 arched structures throughout downtown, and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1765. Its cobblestone streets are lined with several churches including St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Assumption with its gothic spires, and St. George’s Anglican Cathedral with its sets of stained glass windows. Head north from the capital along the leeward side and take in virtually untouched countryside, complete with quaint fishing villages, farmed lands and breathtaking vistas, not to mention black sand beaches. Film buffs will recognize picturesque Wallilabou Bay from some Pirates of the Caribbean films, while adventure buffs look to La Soufriere Volcano, which features rewarding treks lasting several hours. Between the two, there’s Dark View Falls, a rare and multilayered series of towering cascades of respite from the Caribbean heat.

JAW-DROPPING GRENADINES

Head to Grenadines Wharf in Kingstown and hop on the ferry. Destination: Bequia, where Yachties mingle with boat builders, “cocktail cruisers” with fishermen. Meander the lush bluffs and take in panoramic views of teal waters below before heading to pristine Princess Margaret Bay for a swim, scuba and snorkel.

and beautiful beaches attract more than 50,000 people per year. A dip at blissful Salt Whistle Bay, known for its Robinson Crusoe vibe, out-of-this-world white sands and limitless aquamarine shades, is a must.

Small but mighty Union Island is an undiscovered treasure, retaining its homely outpost, off-the-beaten-path feel. Bustling shops, engaging locals and jaw-dropping terrain make exploring this charming island a no-brainer. Further south, Mopion Island is the stuff of postcards. A small, solitary sand spit gem, surrounded by turquoise water and adorned with a single, iconic thatch umbrella, built to warn sailors of the reef. You’ll Instagram yourself silly, and find it near impossible to ever want to leave.

RECHARGE IN UNCOMMERICALIZED OASES

While neighbouring countries accrete commercialized saturation, SVG remains keen on keeping its vibe authentically fresh and one-of-a-kind, especially as it relates to accommodations. While the country is home to lovely, ask-andyou-shall-receive-retreats, Petit St. Vincent takes the cake when it comes to disconnecting and recharging.

A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, PSV is a private island paradise with 22 villas, four kilometres

of white powder-like beaches, Balinese spa treatments and virtually non-existent Wi-Fi. It’s an unpretentious vibe that management wants to preserve; the belief being that the likes of Kardashian-level celebrity would have brought unwanted attention and ultimately compromised the destination’s low-key energy and natural beauty. Talk about an unspoilt Eden.

Cruise ships frequently stop in the country’s main port in the capital Kingstown, but in 2017, Argyle International Airport, the country’s first, made it easier for international visitors to arrive by air, namely Canadians who can now hop on direct weekly flights from Toronto with Air Canada.

All About the People

Known for their warm hospitality, Bajans as they affectionately call themselves, are as vibrant and welcoming as the island itself. A unique cultural tapestry influenced by African, European and Indigenous heritage is at the root of a contagious zest for life that lingers in the heart long after you leave. We had arranged for a driver to accompany us on our outings and Russell’s genuine kindness and enthusiasm for sharing tidbits about life as a local gave depth to an already enriching experience. He was just one of many locals who made our visit so memorable.

A nod to Russell who schooled us on life in Barbados and had a #1 playlist for our island outings.

Beachside Bonding– Bajan Style

Four idyllic days in Barbados proved to be perfect for some mother-daughter time with a side of opulence and laid-back luxury

It had been several years since I last visited Barbados and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the infrastructure had continued to develop with sophisticated elegance, but the authentic hospitality I remembered had not been compromised.

On this trip, we had a specific agenda. I was travelling with

my 18-year-old daughter, Mackenzie and we were in search of some quality mother-daughter bonding while indulging in some of the best the island had to offer. From the moment we were greeted by our VIP concierge service and fasttracked through customs, we entered a realm of discerning excellence.

On the Water

There couldn’t be a better way to spend our first day in Barbados than by taking an extraordinary luxury catamaran around the island. The attentive crew of the Calabaza II were our hosts for a day on the water where we snorkelled amongst colourful coral reefs and a kaleidoscope of sea life. After a sumptuous lunch and a little tanning while taking in the gorgeous coastline, a second stop was made to dive in–this time alongside stingrays and turtles. All the while a crew member was by our side to ensure we didn’t miss out on any of the undersea beauty around us. sailcalabaza.com

Rum: A Signature Spirit

No visit to Barbados is complete without tasting some of their quality rum products, and while brands such as Mount Gay might be more internationally known, there are several independent distilleries worth a visit. We opted to indulge in the rich flavours and storied history of Barbadian rum with a tasting tour of St. Nicholas Abbey, one of the island’s oldest surviving plantations. There we were able to explore the historic distillery and plantation grounds dating back to the 17th century which offered a fascinating glimpse into Barbados’ colonial past. Knowledgeable tour guides captivated us with stories of past owners and occupants while maintaining a deep respect for the history and enduring legacy of the individuals who were enslaved.

The current owners of St. Nicholas, the Warren family share their secrets of the distillation process while you get the opportunity to taste the quality craftsmanship of generations. The medium-bodied 18-year (our favourite) is a molasses-based rum taken straight from the barrel and aged at St. Nicholas at bottle strength. Whether it’s a more complex aged rum or a modest white, each product is handbottled and when purchasing from their rum shop, you can even have your bottle personally engraved as a special souvenir. stnicholasabbey.com

Cuisine From Coast to Coast

Barbados offers a unique fusion of flavours that reflect the island’s rich history and cultural diversity. Fresh seafood abounds, as do hearty plates of Caribbean staples. And whether it’s an upscale restaurant, lively food market, or beachside shack, any level of foodie in search of a good meal on the island won’t be disappointed.

Here are two of our favourite foodie finds:

Cocktail Kitchen, located in the vibrant St. Lawrence Gap area known for its dining and nightlife is where you can eat alongside locals and tourists alike. Chef Damian “Day Day” Leach heads up a delightfully fresh menu that offers generous portions if you’re hungry, but is also perfect if you want nibbles and creative cocktails. Try one of the many selections from their small bites or shareables menu, like Breadfruit Nachos or Chilli Lime Shrimp. ckbarbados.com

Calma Beach Club, in the heart of Holetown on the west coast, was an unexpected find. Locally sourced ingredients and barefoot elegance are its claims to fame. Daily caught fish and produce that would be the envy of anyone back home come together in a menu offering island-inspired dishes served up with plenty of beach vibes. Hang out by day or dance under the stars at night–and don’t miss one of their decadent dessert cocktails. calmabarbados.com

Embracing Barbados’ Natural Beauty

Our itinerary included stops all over the island, which allowed us to take in the lushness you might miss if you stick to the beaches. If you love tropical flowers, Hunte’s Gardens is an oasis nestled in the heart of Barbados in St. Joseph’s Parish. Photo opportunities are everywhere as you wander through this enchanting botanical wonderland. Created by legendary horticulturist Anthony Hunte, the gardens are a blend of tropical plants, trickling waterfalls and whimsical sculptures. It’s a must-visit for any nature lover but you don’t need a green thumb to appreciate the love and care that goes into maintaining this slice of paradise. huntesgardens-barbados.com

Out and about around the island

Our visit to the Animal Flower Cave was another testament that not all beautiful Bajan scenery has to include white sand beaches. On the rugged cliffs of the north coast, the enchanting cave is a natural wonder. The cave and property are owned by the Ward Family whose lineage in Barbados traces back to 1864. The cave’s unique name originates from the delicate sea anemones that dot its crystal-clear pools, resembling vibrant flowers. The intricate rock formations majestically towering over crashing waves create a mesmerizing experience. Stunning coastal views create a perfect backdrop for lunch at the onsite restaurant, where fresh fish is caught daily onsite. animalflowercave.com

Where to Stay

The O2 Beach Club Barbados turned out to be the perfect place for a mother-daughter retreat. Luxurious but not pretentious, think Caribbean chic meets modern Miami. From the moment we arrived, the warm and attentive staff made us feel right at home. The rooms were spacious and contemporary and boasted breathtaking ocean views. Being a relatively small property (130 rooms) meant that it was merely steps before you were dipping your toes into turquoise waters. The size of the property packs a lot of punch with amenities that include three pools (two adults only), six dining options (indoor and outdoor) and seven bars including a rooftop deck. Offering an all-inclusive plan with this level of luxury means a hassle-free experience from start to finish and the boutique hotel style guarantees attention to detail and impeccable service.

Enjoy easy-going Bluefin restaurant with its casual Bajan essence, or order poolside from their menu if you can’t tear yourself away from your lounge chair. Elements open-air restaurant and bar are at the heart of the action day or night, with live music most evenings. We enjoyed more than one stunning sunset on the rooftop while sipping cocktails and tasting tapas at Brisa lounge. For sophistication and elegance, Oro restaurant on the 9th floor is worth a visit whether you are a hotel guest or not. Experience a delectable blend of European and Caribbean flavours that put a unique twist on classic favourites. We Indulged in a perfectly aged Porterhouse and the mouthwatering 48-hour braised lamb shank. Both rivaled any gourmet restaurant at home. With an impressive wine selection, vintage Hollywood vibe complete with baby grand and panoramic views, every aspect of our dining experience was perfection in paradise. o2beachclubbarbados.com

Exceptional Extras

The O2 philosophy of “Breathe it all in” is reflected in the little extras they can arrange for guests. Oceanside dining takes on a whole new meaning under the stars in their “Beach Bubble” gastronomic adventure, and they are experts at making special occasions sparkle with bespoke events. Mackenzie and I were looking for something fun to do one afternoon and the hotel arranged a Paint and Sip Masterclass with Yasmin from @paintandgroove right on property. As the least artistic in our family initially I felt a little intimidated, but as our laughter filled the air and libations flowed, my creativity blossomed. I think even Mackenzie was impressed with my masterpiece. Thanks Yasmin and O2 for such a delightful experience!

Serenity Found

As avid spa-goers, Mackenzie and I were seeking a couple of hours of relaxation but were hoping for something representative of our island surroundings. We didn’t need to look far. From the moment we walked into Acqua Spa, we felt the elements all around us. Located on the 8th floor, this is the highest spa on the island and floor-toceiling windows take full advantage of stellar sea views. Real ocean waves blended with soothing spa sounds and scents, enveloping us like a warm hug. There are plenty of services to choose from, whether a mani-pedi or a unique body ritual.

We took advantage of the fact they have the only on the island which allowed us to have some heartfelt conversation and more laughs. The Bajan Body Blast also left us feeling pampered and lusciously nourished.

The Best for Last

A delightful surprise awaited us on our final night at the hotel—an enchanting encounter with some of nature’s magic. As we savoured our last cocktail at Elements bar, immersed in the melodies of the live band, we struck up a conversation with our bartender. He asked if we had ever seen a mother turtle lay her eggs on the beach. We responded that we had not and he mentioned we might still have time. Filled with anticipation, we quietly made our way down to the beach where to our amazement, a majestic turtle was gracefully carrying out the cycle of life. After she carefully covered the eggs with sand, she turned and gently made her way back to the sea. It may not have been a planned part of our itinerary, but it couldn’t have been a more perfect and poignant farewell to our four days on this idyllic island.

We may have indulged in some of the luxurious offerings on the island but beyond the grandeur, it was the simple moments like these that made us appreciate that this journey was not just about the destination, but about connecting as mother and daughter on a deeper level.

All Aboard the ROCKY MOUNTAINEER

After hearing the much anticipated words “all aboard” beginning a two-day Rocky Mountaineer train trip in the American Southwest I settle into my seat, excited to discover how this relatively new Rockies to the Red Rocks journey stacks up against their iconic Canadian Rockies trip.

The Vancouver-based company, which has been offering luxury train travel for over 30 years in Canada had its first full season between Moab, Utah and Denver, Colorado in 2022. (A 10 week preview happened in 2021, between mid-August and October, four months short of its regular season, that runs from April to October).

U.S. visitors to its Canadian routes, in the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies to the Red Rocks is its first standalone route in the United States.

The train trip was several years in the making since the company searched long and hard to find a route that would ensure guests would see incredible scenery, albeit different but equal to the Canadian Rockies.

And while Rocky Mountaineer once operated a day trip between Vancouver and Seattle to connect

Having travelled the Canadian “First Passage to the West” route twice, between Vancouver and Banff, I knew it was going to be a tough act to follow, considering the Canadian Rockies are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. And while lush forests and snow capped mountains aren’t part of the geography of the American Southwest, its desert beauty is unsurpassed.

A luxury train trip through the American Southwest comes with plenty of spectacular scenery, unique wildlife and lasting memories
Exterior Ruby Canyon

After having done a two day preexcursion organized by the Rocky Mountaineer in Moab and visiting some of its best tourist sites, like Arches National Park with over 2,000 natural stone arches, soaring pinnacles and beautiful red rock slot canyons, I was already fascinated with the geography of the region.

It wasn’t long before the train pulled away from Moab and we were travelling past breathtaking rock canyons. And like the Canadian train trip between Vancouver and Banff, the scenery between day one and day two changed. While red rocks were most noticeable near Moab, on the second day along the Colorado River the landscape flattened and we rolled past cattle grazing fields and wound our way through an interesting, 10-kilometre (six-mile) stretch called Moffat Tunnel, which reached its highest elevation at over 2,834 metres (9,300 feet). In total, the route has 47 tunnels. Because of the reduced height requirements to pass through these tunnels the double-level, gold coaches, available in Canada, cannot be used on the American Southwest route. Instead, the shorter silver coaches make the journey, which results in all meals being served at your seat instead of a lower level dining area. However, the same high level of regional cuisine is provided on SilverLeaf Plus, paired with signature cocktails, local wines

and craft beer.

Guests can board the luxury train either in Moab and end in Denver or vice versa with an overnight stay in the charming city of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, at roughly the halfway point on a 570 kilometre (354 mile) journey.

“One of the reasons we were looking at other routes is a lot of our return guests would come back to the Rocky Mountaineer and say what’s next,” says our affable host and self-described train nerd Michael Hannifin.

He points out the first day of the Rockies to the Red Rocks trip will bring us past the red sandstone cliffs of Ruby Canyon on the Colorado River, that is largely inaccessible except to river rafting.

Hannifin also gives us a heads up we might soon see a “bottoms up” or “Colorado salute.” For some inexplicable reason about a dozen river rafters during our train trip dropped their pants and exposed their bare buttocks. Mooning was definitely something I never saw on either of my Canadian Rockies trips, but apparently it’s common

in the American Rockies, with Hannifin noting the current record of “mooners” was 63 for one trip. It became a joke among passengers on who was able to capture this somewhat surprising view on camera.

The more usual wildlife sightings were numerous and just a half an hour into our train trip Hannifin points out our first wild animal sighting–a Pronghorn. By the journey’s end we will also have spotted elk, deer, a coyote and eagles.

But it was the spectacular mostly red rock landscape, that kept me glued to peering out the spacious, glass-domed coaches. And while we could wander into an adjacent bar car I opted to spend most of my train trip in the main coach so I wouldn’t miss host Hannifin’s commentary, affectionally dubbed “Mike’s musings.”

Had I been in the bar car I would have missed out hearing Mike’s recording by Johnny Cash of Cisco Clifton’s Fillin’ Station, just as we passed the deteriorating gas station in the abandoned ghost town of Cisco. Just one memory that will last among many.

Exploring Vancouver’s four distinct and unforgettable Fairmonts

PICK YOURPleasure

Since their first incarnation as Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886, Fairmont hotels have spread around the world from Shanghai to Dubai. Their acquisition in 2015 by French hotel group Accor only elevated their historically high standards of luxury, service and attention to detail. But each Fairmont retains its own personality, most notably in Vancouver, the only city with four Fairmont hotels to choose from.

FASHION FORWARD

When King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in 1939, they stayed on the 14th Floor. After a $75 million dollar renovation, four opulent Heritage Suites on that floor have emerged in all their former glory. The lobby panelling of African Sapele wood gleams again. The richly detailed brass gates shine. In fact, every room and suite in the hotel has been updated with modern amenities without losing a jot of the grand features that define “the Castle in the City.” You’ll find the marble disc that marks the centre of Vancouver outside the entrance to Notch 8, the restaurant that’s a modern homage to historic train travel. Fortify yourself with a vintage inspired craft cocktail before exploring the Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci and St. John shops in the lobby, or step outside to Alberni Street to find Saint Laurent, Hermes, Tiffany & Co. and Burberry. There’s vintage shopping, Zara and Banana Republic stores on nearby Robson Street.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ?

From the lobby of Fairmont Waterfront, you can see the white sails of Canada Place where the cruise ships dock directly across the street. A favourite with families, there’s lots to explore. Walk or cycle to Stanley Park along the Seawall to visit the Vancouver Aquarium or learn about the cultural history and biology of the Northwest coast from a First Nations guide with Talaysay Tours. French doors in the third floor Terrace Rooms open to private patios with access to a year-round heated pool and a 2,100 square foot potager garden. The hotel’s focus is on sustainability, with a zero-waste policy and no single use plastics. Meet the resident beekeeper and visit the 250,000 bees who produce honey for the hotel, and for its signature West Coast Wild Gin. Dine at ARC, where an expanse of curved glass offers a panorama of the harbour, mountains and sky. The Bottomless Brunch is a must-do.

CURATED, COOL AND COLLECTED

Surrounded by sculptures and literally wrapped in a poem, Fairmont Pacific Rim was rated the World’s Best Business Hotel by Conde Nast Traveler readers and has a coveted AAA Five Diamond Rating. Dedicated to art, music and fashion, the lobby has been known to transform into a catwalk and the Lobby Lounge has hosted impromptu guest performances by well known musical guests. Relax in the TASCHEN library with an inspiring travel book, then journey to Botanist Bar, just steps away, for a Michelin award-winning tea-infused cocktail. At Botanist, executive chef Hector Laguna leans into the biodiversity of the Pacific Northwest with a plant forward locally sourced menu. Live music fills the air till the wee hours. Rejuvenate at Willow Stream Spa where rare oils, gemstones and minerals will spice up your treatments. With its rooftop pools, dedicated practitioners and mountain views, the spa garnered a 2023 Forbes Travel Guide Five Star Award and was named one of the best spas in the world in the Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers Choice Awards.

WELLNESS TAKES FLIGHT

There’s no better place to begin or end your trip to Vancouver than Fairmont Vancouver Airport. It’s been voted the Best Airport Hotel in North America for eight years in a row at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. Wrapped in burled and inlaid wood panelling the colour of crème brûlée, the décor is contemporary and welcoming. The emphasis is on wellness, with an extensive gym, an indoor 3-lane resistance pool and a children’s wading pool that overlook the main floor of the international terminal. Rooms have runway or mountain views with floor to ceiling soundproofed windows. Fit on the Fly Signature Rooms have a Peloton bike and a FITBENCH ONE for in-room workouts. Enjoy the action on the runways with a copy of the plane spotting guide found in every room. Fairmont Gold rooms and suites add telescopes, exclusive lounge access with breakfast and canapes and a personal concierge who can organize e-bike outings to the surrounding wetlands for a guided birding tour. Time to fish before takeoff? The fish valet will prep and freeze your unique souvenir.

Pirate in

GALVESTON

Planning a cruise from Galveston? Add a day or two to play pirate on the island founded by the famous marauder Jean Lafitte in 1800

> BURIED TREASURE

With over 1,500 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s no wonder that downtown Galveston has its share of galleries, boutiques and antique shops all housed in stately Victorian buildings. The former banks, merchant warehouses and cotton brokerages date from the 1850’s when Galveston was known as the “Wall Street of the South.” The Strand, from 20th to 25th street, is the

best place to search for that one-ofa-kind vintage souvenir or a piece of original art. The Galveston Arts Centre supports local up and coming artists. Check their website for the dates of free Artwalk events.

> AHOY LANDLUBBERS, LADS AND LASSIES

Stay high and dry while you explore the ocean depths, a tropical rainforest and travelling exhibits from around the world in three giant glass pyramids at Moody Gardens. Watch more than 10,000 marine animals, from sharks and seals to penguins and jellyfish, dip and dive in the 1.5 million gallon tanks of the twelve-storey Blue Pyramid. Butterflies and birds flit around meandering paths in the ten-storey Rainforests of the World pyramid. Sloths and monkeys relax in the treetops while scaly Komodo dragons lounge safely inside their enclosure. Sharks are ready for their close-ups, if you are, on the largest 3D screens in Texas in the Discovery Pyramid. Bring a bathing suit. There’s a white sand beach outside.

> WHAT’S COOKING IN THE GALLEY?

Head for Riondo’s Ristorante in The Strand for exquisite northern Italian

dishes from scallops to tiramisu created in-house from family recipes by executive chef-owner Rico Caminos. Fresh seafood and veggies are sourced from local markets, while the wine list is plucked from vintages worldwide. Try the seafood ravioli and spinach gnocchi. The bank vault makes a romantic setting to steal someone’s heart.

For dessert, cross the street to La King’s Confectionary, a Galveston institution since 1889. Their Purity ice cream, a Texas original, is handmade in store. Try a cool banana split or a creamy milkshake at the original marble soda fountain counter that stretches the length of the store’s wellworn wood floor. Come in and watch yards of shiny taffy being pulled into treats on the weekends or pick from dozens of other original candies.

> WHERE TO DROP ANCHOR

The Tremont House, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is a 119 room jewel of a boutique hotel created from the 1870-1880 Leon H. Blum Building, a warehouse for the import of “fancy goods and notions.” Palm trees tickle the walkways between the upper floors under a sunny, skylight topped atrium.

A 14-foot carved rosewood bar dating from 1888 nestles in a corner of the piano lounge. Rooms are refined and supremely comfortable, with Mascioni Italian linens, Illy coffee, and soft upholstered easy chairs. Suites on the top floor have views of the harbour and pressed tin ceilings. Suites in the historic annex have soaker tubs, high ceilings and tall windows, reminiscent of New Orleans. Any modern day buccaneer would be happy to moor up here.
