Dear Readers, Welcome back! Just wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about what you will find within the pages of the Fall 2012 issue. Our inspiration came from the classic German Fairy Tales written by the Grimm’s Brothers. Now, these are not the traditional fairy tales with all the sugary sweet changes put on them by the present day media outlets. I recommend that you all take the time to read the original Grimms’ Tales to truly grasp everything we were working towards. Two of our favorites are Rumplestiltskin (Jason’s favorite) and Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs (Heather’s favorite). Not only did we get to enjoy the fun of translating the Grimms’ Tales from paper to wedding style, but we also got to enjoy an Oktoberfest, a Renaissance Faire, beer, candy apples, and so much more! Needless to say, we had a great time putting together this issue for you to enjoy. We definitely hope that you have as much fun reading it as we had creating it. One more thing...we have an exciting announcement! Starting in the New Year 2013 there will now be SIX issues released every year! Now you don’t need to wait three months between each issue to see the next. This means more inspiration, advice, and other wedding fun! Thank you so much for your continued support as well as all the help we get from all our great contributors, vendors, friends, and family. Enjoy!

Q&A Q- Do I have to invite guests to both the ceremony and reception? A- Yes and no. If you invite a guest to the ceremony you should invite them to the reception too. However, if you want to keep your ceremony very personal and intimate it is okay to just invite some guests to the reception.
Q- I really want to wear a black gown, but my mother insists on white. What should I do? A- You can wear whatever color you like. However, talk to your mother find out her concerns and thoughts. Explain to her why you want a black gown. You can always wear a traditional white or ivory gown for the ceremony and change into a black gown for your recption.

Renaissance Faire L
ove, romance, chivalry; all ideals associated with the common wedding. These are all time honored and no matter how things go, there are things that will never go away, at least not completely. This date takes you to a place where those ideals are definitely not overlooked. For a fun date night full of action, adventure, and excitement check out your local Renaissance faire. Renaissance faires are a great place to go for a nice date, and they can be found all over the country. It is like a time machine, taking you back to the medieval times of old, full of knights, jousting, and so much more. These events are usually full of great food, great shows, and tons of interesting characters and vendors to check out and enjoy. For those that really want to immerse themselves in the atmosphere, try dressing up in a medieval style costume. There are a variety of costumer purveyors that will be more than happy to get you set up from a corset to cape and everything in between. This is optional of course, but can add more to the fun. Just a few tips before you head out. First, make sure you check out your respective faire schedule. Many faires have themed weekends and different events going on, so make sure you pick an event that is thrilling to you and your future spouse. Second, make sure you take the time to check out the specials. There are usually discount tickets available through different promotions and organizations. Third, many hotels that are local to the faire offer discounted room and ticket packages that will not only save you money, but can make it more than just a date. It can turn into a weekend getaway. Finally, make sure that you pick up a program when you arrive and look through it to see exactly what shows and events are going on when and where throughout the faire. That way you can make sure you get to see what you want to and not miss out on some of the great attractions that they have going on. Now grab a turkey leg, a glass of mead, kick back, and enjoy the day.

HairThis hairstyle is great for shoulder length to long hair and all hair types.
Items needed: curling iron (one inch barrel), hair spray, and hair clips. Entire hair can be curled the night before, which is preferable. Clip each curl with a hair clip and spray. Once your hair cools off (if you do it the same day, try and leave curls clipped for a few hours.) remove clips. When all the hair is loose, run your fingers gently through the curls. Do not comb or brush. You will lose the beautiful bouncy curls.

Skin - has a very satin finish. The foundation used was Nars Sheer Glow. A very light contour using Nars Laguna Bronzer.
Cheeks - are blushed with a peach colored cream blush. Eyes - are completed by using MAC's painterly paint pot, then a light
dusting of chrome yellow eye shadow across the eyelids, soba eye shadow in the crease, and Vanilla eyeshadow under the brow bone to highlight. The vanilla is also used to highlight the inner eye area/tear duct area and above the cheek bones. Mascara & Primer is by Tarte. No eyeliner is used just two very nicely applied coats of mascara on both the top and bottom lashes for fresh wide open eyes and precise definition.
Lips - are popped with color using MAC's Full Fuchsia lipstick with beet
lip liner and a dab a clear lip glass to add a subtle shine.

For the Cinderella look: HairThis hairstyle is great shoulder length to long hair and all hair types.
Items need: curling iron 1/2 inch barrel, hairspray, ponytail hooks, bobbie pins, and brush. Brush hair tightly into a high ponytail. Use ponytail hook to maintain a very tight ponytail. With a 1/2 inch barrel, curl hair using small strands. After curling hair, grab curl, and while holding vertically, grab a strand of hair and pull curl down. Clip with a Bobbie pin. Repeat this step until no hair is left. Hairspray and you’re done.

Skin - has matte finish . The foundation used was Makeup Forever’s HD.

Cheeks - are blushed with a peach colored cream blush. Eyes - were created by using an asymmetrical application.. The crease is outlined using a fine angle
brush and black waterproof gel eyeliner from makeup forever. Outlining from the inner corner of the eyes through the center of the crease to a sharp point meeting at the end of where the brow ends. The same is repeated under the eye so that the lines meet to a thick defined cat like eye line at the end of the eye. From the crease to the lid/ base of lash line, fill in with shades of black. MAC’s typographic and print shadows were used to do this. Repeat the same steps on the opposite eye (minus meeting the lines to an inner point by the tear duct). Extend the points outward to bridge of the nose and under the eye bringing that line down and outward toward the bridge of the nose and keeping both lines disconnected. Fill in with the same shadows. MAC’s Vanilla eye shadow was used to highlight under the brow bone and above the cheek bones. Apply false eyelashes that fit the correct eye size and shape (you can get at any beauty supply store) and use Duo adhesive in dark to apply the lashes (the safest and best eyelash adhesive). .
Lips - Rose colored sheer lip stain by Nars was used. Enough color on the lips but not heavy. Just a
stain so the lips would not compete with the eyes, but still bright and fresh.

n creating the style to wear for a Grimm’s fairy tale inspired wedding, romanticism is a fitting choice. This was the era (Romantic Period) of fashion when these tales were first told. Blues, browns, yellows and reds were the shades most often worn; in the past, the shade you wore was significance to your wealth, today we choose the shades that look beautiful. The dresses were designed with corset bodices, sweetheart shape neck lines and made of crinoline (tulle) and lace. Kate Linde Bridal, a wholesale European bridal gown distributor, provides beautiful corset style gowns from four fabulous collections. Gorgeous gowns are available from sheath to ball gowns and everything in between. Styles such as ‘Katrin’ with beautiful lace details, an elegant ribbon corset, and sheath style. And ‘Berkli’ with layers of gorgeous tulle, stunning bodice details, and slight ball gown style. Both are from the Lady White collection. These European gowns are truly romantic and elegant. Vera Wang, one of the most well known bridal designers decided to change her runway and feature some non-traditional wedding gowns in shades of black and nude. These gowns (showcased during Bridal Week, October 2011) came as a shock to everyone including the media. With all the hype and excitement these black gowns received on the runway, they also make a wonderful choice for your non-traditional Grimm’s inspired wedding and sure to get some shock and excitement from your guests. In looking at the Fall 2012 collection by Vera Wang, styles ‘Joelle’ and ‘Josephine’ would be a perfect fit for the bride who chooses to wear black, with a hint of the color nude. The combination is extremely elegant and fulfills the look. BHLDN, the newest addition to the Urban Outfitters brand, offers beautifully constructed wedding gowns and accessories. The company has two stores in Houston & Chicago and offers the entire line on their web site. Styles like ‘Burnished Organza Gown’ features lace and ruffles, ‘Cascading Goddess Gown’ gives a true “Into the Woods” feel with its asymmetrical skirt, ‘Banderole Gown’ has a complete romanticism tone with the flowing sleeves and ruffles throughout the gown and ‘Crashing Waves’ adds color to the bride and with the single shoulder strap you will truly feel like a goddess. Tina & Terry, owners of Wedding Bells Boutique in Northfield, NJ stated they have many gowns that are romantic, made of lace and have corset bodices. According to the owners, “This season lace is bigger than ever.” They also noted that colored sashes, pink gowns and dresses with blue and black accents are among the popular choices. These would all make your style true and unique. See how we used more traditional and corset style gowns for this issues inspiration starting on page 59.

Oktoberfest Celebration S
ince the Grimm’s fairy tales are German fairy tales that were told to children, we thought it would great to experience some of the German culture. Other then going to Germany, what better way is there to get in touch with German culture then to take part in a truly German Oktoberfest. This event took place in North East Philadelphia at Cannstatter Volkfest Verien. They have been having this festival on Labor Day weekend for over 125 years. Many of the long time attendees are first and second generation immigrants from Germany. The event featured all sorts of great German traditions. There was great German food, German music, and of course German beer. It also featured German vendors, including beer steins, lederhosen, and hand carved German wall clocks. The centerpiece of the showcase was the Fruchsaule, a giant column made of fruits and vegetables that is the symbol of Oktoberfest. Most people only think of beer when they think of Oktoberfest. What few people realize is that Oktoberfest was actually about the Bavarian agriculture. The first Oktoberfest took place in Munich in 1810 as a celebration of the marriage of the Bavarian crowned Prince Ludwig. The following year they held the event again to showcase the agriculture of the Bavarian people and included a horse race. Now the festival is not only held in Munich, but in locations all over the world. It has become a more modern festival; however the agriculture part of the showing still occurs every four years. It was a great experience! We had a great time and learned so much. It was also fun to eat all of the great food, drink some great beer, and enjoy all the sights and sounds that make Oktoberfest a wonderful event. If you have a chance and you are in the area it is definitely worth checking out and if you are not from around the Philadelphia area, make sure you try to take part in an Oktoberfest near you.

here are many pieces that go into the puzzle of planning your big day. Whether it is the menu, the tuxes, the dresses, or any other part of it; everything takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. One thing that can get overlooked in the process however, is the beer menu. Many people just take the attitude of “whatever is a good deal and a brand I have heard of is good enough.” But there is so much more that can go into it to make the perfect pairing between your big day and your beverage selection. We sat down with a Sommelier, AKA beer expert, Matt Simpson to find out some of the more important things about the beer you choose on your big day.
While picking the perfect beer for your big day is important, it is also important to realize that there is no single “correct” answer in this hunt. Because beer is available in so many varieties, styles, flavors, etc; it is nearly impossible to limit the choice to just one. Once you factor in individual tastes, the spectrum becomes even broader. One tip to keep in mind when choosing your beer is the audience you are serving to. If your audience is full of beer lovers who drink all different types of beers, this gives you more opportunity to go with some of the more exotic beer types. However, most weddings have a more mixed market of guests ranging from your casual beer drinker all the way up to your beer connoisseurs. If you are trying to get a beer that is going to be a crowd pleaser across the diverse span of your guest list, it is generally a good idea to pick a beer that is less hoppy, possibly blonde ale. These are available both in your smaller private labels as well as from your larger mass production companies. Keep in mind your food choice, when considering your beer. Beers have so many flavors and can pair very well with a variety of different foods. Because beer is carbonated it helps lift the flavors of the food to really make it pop. Some of the best pairings involve chocolate and cheese, but there are many more. It’s also important to keep in mind how you plan to serve the beer. Many times you can purchase craft beers in larger bottles similar to that wine is found in. This can make for an interesting and unique presentation. However, bear in mind that you don’t want to buy it too early if that is the plan. When taste is a concern, you are better off going with either cans or a keg. Both do not allow in any light. Light is what causes beer to turn or “skunk.” Bottles, if purchased early, should be stored in a dark place to help it maintain its fresh taste. It’s also a good idea to check with local vendors. The reason for this is many times local vendors have some interesting varieties and unique flavors that you may not be able to get through a mass production facility. It is also smart because there is sometimes a chance you can get a better deal from local vendors. An important thing to do when looking for a great beer for your big day is to make sure you do your research and don’t be scared to ask. There are numerous types, flavors, and so much more available; it can be very overwhelming. There is hope though. If you go to local vendors or find a local beer Sommelier, they will be more than happy to help you. You can also contact Matt, as he is always more than happy to answer any beer question you may have. There are even ways to set up a “beer tasting” similar to that of a wine tasting to make sure you are getting exactly what you want. Most importantly though, make sure you get a beer you like, and enjoy your big day.

Our Real Bride was married on August 31st, 2012! Congratulations Josephine and Dino! We had the chance to catch up with Josephine when she got back from her amazing honeymoon.

ummer months in South Jersey is a time to head to the shore, take mini vacations and relax; but that was not the case for Josephine. With just the summer months in front of her (before her 8/31 wedding) she and fiancé Dino were sure busy getting all the final details ready for their big day. The couple purchased their invitations from an individual woman that worked out of her home. They found this better (and less expensive) than going to a stationery company. In addition to the invitations, this woman also created the place cards. One of the most used web sites for Josephine was Etsy.com. It was on this site she found their programs, table numbers, and a couple of signs. Early in the summer, the couple found out the church they were to be married at had a broken air conditioner. Having a Labor Day weekend wedding, they knew it would be hot. Josephine found programs that were both functional and informative. They were fans! For the reception, her venue did offer frames to place table numbers in; however, to save some time, the couple chose a tented style table number. The signs were a cute add on. The ring bearer was to carry a sign that read “Here Comes The Bride” instead of a pillow and “Mr.” & “Mrs.” signs were bought for the back of the bride and grooms chairs. One piece of advice about Etsy, is this is a handmade website, keep that in mind when ordering The favors were a tricky thing for the couple to buy. They wanted something pretty and useful for their guests. After visiting the Lenox Outlet in Egg Harbor Twp, NJ they found votive holders with a cherry blossom design and a candle inside. Making the candles look complete, Josephine bought wrapping paper from Hallmark and
ribbon from efavormart.com to make the gifts truly look like a gift; to add one more personal touch, they ordered personalized stickers from weddingpaperdivas.com and placed on the boxes. This was a very time consuming task she took on, probably totaling 8 hours, but worth it, she said! For the bridal party gifts, Josephine and Dino wanted to truly express their gratitude to their friends and family. Josephine bought the girls a personalized cosmetic bag with their initials monogrammed and then she filled the bag with make-up, oil absorbers cloths, earrings by Eliot Danori, a shamballa bracelet, and a gift card for all of the to get mani/pedi’s before the wedding. Dino handed out Gucci wallets, silk pocket squares and a cigar to help celebrate. As for the flower girl and ring bearer, they received a photo box frame and personalized coloring book with their names. In addition, the flower girl received her basket and accessories; the ring bearer received a gift card to Toys R Us, how fun! Some other DIY projects included a “Just Married” sign for the car for when they left the reception. Not all car rentals allow you to place signs on the cars, so check before hand. They rented a vintage Rolls Royce for this occasion. As for the sign, they designed it and had it printed at Kinkos. Lastly, Josephine made necessity baskets for the restrooms; it is amazing how much you can go through for one wedding! The couple mentioned they learned a lot about weddings in preparing for their own. Josephine hinted to us there were a lot of “props” bought for the wedding to create fun memories, check us out in the next issue to see how Josephine and Dino’s day turned out.

Food as a favor is always a good way to go, because most people enjoy receiving food. Brides and grooms can rest assured that there is a better chance that a food favor is going to be used instead of placed in a drawer and forgotten. One particularly sweet treat that brides and grooms can give out, that are sure to be a crowd pleaser, are candy apples. While they are particularly great to as a favor for a Snow White styled wedding design, candy apples arealso fall favorite. They can be used in a traditional wedding of any style, especially during the autumn months. Candy apples are also a great choice for any wedding, because they are a very versatile favor. You can get them in a variety of flavors, colors, and styles to make them fit your wedding style, as well as your taste buds. any brides and grooms dream of having a fairy tale wedding. They hope that it begins with ‘once upon a time’ and ends with ‘they lived happily ever after.’ When reading through many of the favorite childhood fairy tales, we find that many of them are set in a time long ago, in a land far away. And in many cases, there is almost assuredly a beautiful castle. In a day and age of modern technology and digital everything, there are not too many castles to be found. But if you travel to Reading, PA; there is one tucked away off the beaten path. As you travel down the long and quiet Stokesay Castle lane, you seem to be passing through a wormhole in time. You leave the sights and sounds of the town and are transported to a secluded area where you seem to be in the middle of nothing. As you come into the clearing, you see a monstrous and beautiful stone building come into your view. It seems something like this only exists in movies. This is Stokesay Castle. From the time you arrive to the outside of the building, as you enter the giant wooden door, or as you stroll through the winding staircases and hallways of the building, you feel like you are in that fairy tale castle. Not only did we have a chance to tour the beautiful castle and its grounds, we also had a chance to sit down with Larissa, the wedding coordinator at Stokesay Castle about the venue. Here’s what she had to tell us.
What is the history of Stokesay Castle? Inspired by a 13th century English castle by the same name, Stokesay Castle was once the summer home of the Hiester Family. Mr. Hiester spared no expense when it came to the 10 acre property. Local building materials and craftsmen were used, and great care was exercised in duplicating hand-carved beams, and leaded windows. Even with the addition of $30,000 worth of hardware, some of which are still present today, Mr. Hiester’s fiancé did not approve of this luxurious wedding gift. The Castle was occasionally used by the Hiester Family until 1956, when it was purchased by a group who turned it into a restaurant in the 1970’s and operated until they were forced to close in 2007. Thankfully, Jack Gulati had fond memories of Stokesay Castle and rescued it in March of 2009, from almost certain deprecation. Mr. Gulati dedicated millions to the restoration of the Castle, Ballroom and surrounding grounds. Upgrading much of the plumbing, electric and other amenities have left Stokesay in a memorable, yet modernized state. What is the alcohol policy? All alcohol must be purchased though Stokesay Castle, we do not offer any outside food or beverage to be brought into the castle. The Culinary Team is led by Executive Chef Willie Brockington and is supported by a number of well trained, passionate cooks that are able to customize and assemble the most exquisite dishes. Can ceremonies be held there? Accommodations for outside wedding ceremonies are available in our charming Wedding Garden. With its well-manicured landscape, the Garden presents convenient and picturesque photo opportunities. Is there a place for brides and grooms to get ready? We offer two rooms for the Bride and Groom. The Princess Suite, for the ladies, is a room located at the top of a tower overlooking our Wedding Garden. You will be able to get pampered in the two rooms in the tower, which are well equipped with everything you need, including your own private bathroom. For the Gentlemen, we have the Board Room, which is what we like to call the “Man Cave.” It features a Boardroom Style table, private bathroom, and state of the art entertainment with a flat screen TV and XM Satellite Radio. Is there anything about Stokesay Castle our readers might be surprised to learn? The Castle isn’t haunted, although it is apparently been in several books and even in a haunted tour. However, this Castle is not haunted, but enchanted with a wonderful staff and beautiful remodeling that is breathtaking. What is the most memorable/bizarre request a couple has had? We had to find an Elephant for an upcoming event, and I will say that it was one of the most difficult yet exciting things I’ve had to do. It was definitely something that is not often requested, and was difficult to locate and get to Reading, PA but needless to say we did find an elephant and it is definitely going to make the event! Has Stokesay Castle hosted any celebrity weddings? We’ve had local celebrities have events or weddings here, but no big name celebrities. What makes Stokesay Castle unique or different? Well first off, it is a Castle! You can’t tell me that when you were a little girl you didn’t dream about getting married in a Castle, we all have. Stokesay Castle offers that feeling of being a complete princess on your wedding day. We only host one event on the grounds at a time so it is all about you and only you! We will be with you leading up to and continuing throughout the day of your wedding. We want you to relax and we’ll take care of all the details for you. o doubt your perfect wedding day includes you and your loved ones enjoying an evening of fun dancing, delicious food, drinks, and great company. Traditionally, for most couples, a wedding cake ends the reception’s dinner time and signifies “it’s time to party!” Do you want more than just wedding cake for you and your guests to enjoy? In Sicilian tradition, after the cake cutting and dancing, a Viennese table is presented. A viennese table is a single table, or multiple tables, that offers pastries, cake, coffee, and more. These tables are sometimes adorned with flowers, fancy linens, and other extra stunning elements. Depending on the venue, the tables are wheeled in or there will be a separate room for the display the delicious goods. Recently, similar varieties of dessert displays being offered with a twist including candy buffets, specialty stations (such as make-your-own ice cream sundaes), mini donuts, bakery/sweets tables, and more. Include Pinkberry at the reception, offering guests mini cups of yogurt plus several toppings (your favorites!). The options to personalize these yummy treats are endless!
Maybe you would like to incorporate a long-time family recipe for a baked good or add your favorite childhood treat. oline and Mike were set up on two blind dates by mutual friends. The first one Mike never showed up. So, they rescheduled for dinner and a movie at their mutual friend’s house. Joline and her friend were making calamaria and she “accidentally” tossed one at Mike’s face. Surprisingly, Mike was still interested and asked if they could meet up again when he dropped Joline off that night. Ironically, a year before they had also been working at neighboring stores in the mall. Joline thought Mike was cute, but never did anything about it. Joline didn’t notice he was “that guy” because he stopped dying his hair, until a few months into seeing each other. Joline and Mike had discussed getting mariied, but put off the proposal when they had their son. Joline was still on maternity leave and Mike was at a new job. Joline was in the living room, Mike came home grabbed their son and then came back complaining that the baby needed changed. Joline was tired and irritated, but when she took her son from Mike she noticed his onsie was different. Mike had gotten the onsie embroidered with, “Will you marry my daddy?” and tied the ring around his wrist. Of course Joline said yes!

ove knows no boundaries. It spans many gaps, and unites people from all over the world. Such is the story of Elena and Roberto. Elena, who hails from Madrid, Spain, and Roberto, who is from Peru, after 5 years together decided to celebrate their love last August in beautiful Montreal with just a few members of her family and some friends. Elena wanted the wedding to be an intimate yet elegant affair. She chose a dress with a 1930’s style designed, complimented with jewelry that is a family heirloom and carried a vintage lace fan. The ceremony was held in a Montreal Courthouse. This was not a cold and impersonal civil wedding. Instead the officiant added a real personal touch to help make their day even more special. And because the officiant also spoke Spanish, it really made everyone feel at home. After the ceremony, they went to take their bridal shots in the beautiful Plateau neighborhood and Parc Lafontaine: Elena, who had only been in Montreal for a few days, had a blast discovering the city, and was so surprised and touched by the kindness and cheerfulness of the many montrealers who spontaneously congratulated the newlyweds. Finally, they had an intimate dinner at Mochica, Montreal's best (and best known) Peruvian restaurant, were they enjoyed typical Peruvian Pisco Sour and Ceviches. Overall, the day was beautiful and truly captured the love that these two have for each other.

Directions 1 Each ribbon should be about two feet long so that you will have enough length to tie a perfect bow and cut away excess ribbon as necessary. Use any type of ribbon you would like – a smaller size (under a half inch) is best for the ribbon used to tie the rings on the inside of the book. 2 You need to choose what page you would like to show when you open your book to reveal your rings. It wouldn’t look cute opened up to the chapters page or the dedication page, and each and every book is different – so pick your page. You will rip out the pages leading up to this page. 3 Decide where you are going to punch. Push the punch as far forward onto the page as you can, and squeeze. The thickness of your book pages will determine how many pages you can punch at one time. The easiest way I have found to punch in the exact same place, is to trace the design onto the next page, then line your punch up and punch away. This means using every single punch hole, you will trace the spot for your next punch. 4 Punch until you have about 3/4in to a 1in hole in your book, you can always put your rings inside to measure if you have enough room for them. 5 Once you have all your pages punched, you will tie your ribbons. Starting with the ribbon that you want to be on the outside of your book. Thread it through the opening and tie a tight knot – no bow yet. Tie the knot on the outside edge of the pages, so that when your book is closed it will not be closed on the knot. 6 Then using your second (and thinner) ribbon tie another tight knot and this time tie it in the center of the punched out hole. 7 When it’s time… thread your rings onto the inside ribbon. **If you are having them carry your real wedding rings down the isle, make sure to tie a simple bow with NO knot underneath, to hold the rings. This is very important. The reason being, once carried down the isle, the rings will be easily removed with one pull from the end of the bow. If there is a knot underneath the bow your poor groom will have to dig to untie the knot and remove the rings. 8 Next tie your outer bow and re-adjust the inner bow to make sure it’s tight and lays flat. 9 Cut your ribbons to desired length.
Our Review We absolutely LOVE this DIY project. The ring bearer book was simple to do, very unique, and ecofriendly! After the wedding you can easily place it on your bookshelf or display on your coffee table.

Q. Tell us about yourself. Personality, likes, dislikes: Joe - I’m pretty easy-going fella. I like good-hearted folks and I dislike mean people. I’d describe my personal style as “Casual Man meets Business Owner Chic” and I prefer short walks on the beach... it takes too long to get back when you walk to far. Coleen - I’m a New Yorker - I’m excitable, enthusiastic, outgoing and I move at a fast pace. I love helping people and making things easier and better for people. I love my three huge dogs and I really dislike humidity.
How long have you been a stationery designer? Joe - I started working as a freelance graphic designer in 2005. Coleen - We’ve had PaperFreckles since 2009 officially.
What made you choose this profession? Joe - At the time I decided to pursue a career in graphic design, I had been working in the food service industry as a chef for about eight years. I knew I was ready to move away from the industry altogether but was searching for something I waould really enjoy and be able to make a living with. I’ve always been creative, but being an “artist” in a purists sense of the word wouldn’t be viable. Graphic design fit the bill. After working as a print designer, people starting asking if I would consider designing their wedding invitations... Coleen - I love good design and color, and I’ve always loved stationery. I was lucky enough to marry a man with artistic talen who can bring my visions to life. We make a great team! I also love talking to people, asking questions, getting to know them better. I’m genuinely interested in people and so I love meeting with new brides and learning about their love stories. I love thinking of how we can bring their personality to paper for their wedding stationery.
Why did you start your own business? Joe - The idea of working for yourself and being in control of your own success was extremely appealing and luckily I get to work together with my wife to create our success now. Coleen - I have so many ideas floating around my head, I needed a viable outlet for them!
What do you love most about being a stationery designer? Joe - I love the variety that it offers. Sure, we’re designing wedding invitation and paper goods - but there’s always something to work on..always a new idea to chase down. And being able to be part of such an important day for our brides is really special! Coleen - I love that I can work together with my husband. I love working with people, and we get to work with brides during the most happy time of their lives, so that makes it even better!
What services do you offer brides and grooms? Joe - We offer custom wedding stationery designs. The bride and groom come to us with their wildest ideas and we find a way to make them happy. As we like to say, “ Just like Freckles - no two are alike.” In addition, we also offer a growing selection of customizable invitations for those couples looking for something with unique touches but aren’t looking for fully custom design. Coleen - We do more than just paper. We’re really selling ideas. We think of ways to relate a couple’s unique relationship via their wedding stationery. Whether a custom logo or map - we think of ways to help the couple express themselves to their guests. We help them plan all their wedding stationery needs - from save the dates thru thank you cards. Couples come to us for our ideas and know they’ll get something highly personal and memorable.
What style best describes your work? Joe - Because our work is custom to the bride and groom the style is sometimes fluid, but I would say witty and whimsical with unqiue details. Coleen - Well, we customize our style to fit our clients - that is one of our specialties. Some artists have one unique style, and brides choose them for that style. We really work with a couple to create something in a style that fits best for them. I think what we do particularly well is design for brides who want a blend of traditional and modern styles. Many times they have family obligations or their venue dictates a traditional style, but they want to find ways to infuse a modern or whimsical touch.
What are some of your favorite wedding memories? Joe - We’ve been very lucky to have worked with so many wonderful families, but I think the most enjoyabl memories we take away are when the bride and groom (and even the parents too!) tell us that we really helped to bring their vision together. there have been a number of instances where our design have dictated the rest of their wedding decorations and themes. Coleen - My favorite wedding, in addition to my own of course, was my college roommate’s. She’s Belgian, and got married in this gorgeous country lodge in the Belgian countryside. Their weddings go all night, and ran till 5am. They had a 10-tier cake adorned with sparklers that was wheeled onto the dance floor. Also, all of her aunts and uncles dressed up as nuns and performed a comedy sketch for the guests…it was awesome! I also went to a weekend-long wedding in a castle on a lake in Ireland. It was in March, and was sunny the entire time - which is highly unusual. We played billiards after hours, and hung out in the pub (drinking Guinness) that was in the castle’s basement - it was really such a fun experience!
What advice do you have for brides and grooms? Joe - From a professional standpoint - dont wait until the last minute to think about your invitations. It’s usually the first thing your guests come in contact with relating to your big day so it has the potential to really set the tone for the event. On a personal level - you can read all the advice columns, books, and blogs you want about what the most important thing in your wedding is. But the truth is, if the food and the entertainment or the dress and cake are what’s most important, spend your money there... it’s your day after all. Coleen - Do what YOU want to do. It’s your special day - and although someone else may be contributing financially and you want to take their opinions into consideration, don’t sacrifice what’s most important to you. Speak up for yourselves and kindly let your family members know how important they are, but ultimately, this is YOUR day. If a family member really cares about something that is not that important to you - let them run with it and it’s one less thing on your list to worry about - view it as a gift. It makes me sad when people don’t get along when planning a wedding - it’s so important to always remember the real purpose of the day, and squash all the minor frustrations that don’t matter in the long run.
