editor’s note ISSUE 13 A Tim Burton Wedding

Dear Readers, This issue was one of the more fun issues that we could take part in. There was some difficulties that delayed the release (you can find out more about that in our featured article), but in the end it all came together. It couldn’t come out on a better day. What better way to celebrate Halloween but with the master of Halloween himself, Tim Burton. For this issue we took Tim Burton and his films and used them for inspiration to create some of the more unique and avante garde wedding ideas that can make your wedding amazing. His visual style makes for some very stunning and impactful pieces that can be incorporated throughout the wedding. Whether it’s the cake, the stationery, the dress, or even the venue; you can find a way to include Tim Burton’s unique style in your wedding day.

xoxo, Jason and Heather

Q&A Q- My fiancé and I want to have a darker offbeat wedding. We want to keep our wedding elegant, but with an offbeat twist. Where can I find inspiration? A- We LOVE weddings with an offbeat twist! First, visit www.itsaboutdetails.com and you will find all types of offbeat wedding ideas and inspiration. Second, check out websites like pinterest. There are endless ideas. Third, depending on your direction watch movies! Just make sure not to take them too literal. Look for patterns, colors, style, etc. in the movies you watch. Q- Our wedding date happens to be on Halloween, but we don’t want a Halloween or offbeat wedding. Is it ok to have a traditional wedding on Halloween? A- Absolutely! If that’s the date you want and that works best for you and your fiancé then don’t feel pressured to incorporate Halloween or offbeat elements. If you’re still concerned about it, give a nod to Halloween by having a candy bar at your wedding.

If you would like to have your questions answered, please send them to info@itsaboutdetails.com.

date night

A Night of Tim Burton D

ate nights don’t always have to be about going out for a night on the town. While going out is usually a good time, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and relax at home with your soon-to-be spouse. With all the pressures of the wedding day looming, it’s good to take the time to relax. One date night idea that completely encompasses that idea is a stay at home movie night. Since this issue is Tim Burton inspired, there is really no better choice than selecting a few of your favorite Tim Burton movies and snuggling down with your honey. If you aren’t familiar with Tim Burton’s works, he has a variety of movies available that encompass a pretty broad spectrum of the genre. He has written, directed, or produced well over 20 films that all have his unique styling. They range from comedy to drama to action to horror to musical and a little bit of everything in between. So grab your blanket, pop some popcorn, and get comfy on the couch, it’s time to immerse yourself into the movie world of Tim Burton. Enjoy the show!

style & beauty

Style & Beauty

{it’s okay to be simple, unique and different}

W

hen doing a wedding that is a little bit more unique, like a Tim Burton inspired wedding, it can be very hard to find the right look for the bride. Most of the dresses, hairstyles, make up designs, and accessories fall into that “traditional” category. This can make the search that much harder when the couple is anything but traditional. Here are some tips to achieving the right style and beauty look for the unique couple.

• Think outside the box. Even though this is a wedding, you don’t necessarily have to get your dress and accessories at a wedding boutique. There are a variety of color gowns and accessories that are available through other types of stores.

• Try vintage. There are many second hand and consignment shops that may have a vintage dress or shoes that could fit the theme you are looking for.

• Consider DIY. Buy a dress and dye it. This is not the easiest way to do it, but with some work and a little practice it can be done. There are also a variety of DIY options for accessories, both online and at stores.

• Look everywhere for inspiration. Don’t just look at your traditional wedding books and magazines,

especially for hair and make-up. If you see something and like it, snap a picture of it with your cell phone.

• Don’t be scared to ask your hair stylist and makeup artist. If you talk things out with your hair stylist and makeup artist and tell them you are looking for something unique, they will be more than happy to work with you. Many hair and make-up artists love a challenge and are excited to do something more than the traditional looks.

Above all else, be yourself. Try to include your personality into the things you are choosing and don’t let your decision be swayed. Just make sure you keep in mind that it is a wedding and that you will be looking back on these pictures for the rest of your life. If you use that as your guide, you can’t go wrong!

We’re Expecting! A s many of you know, there was a delay to the newest issue of the magazine. The delay was something of a personal matter that caused us to be forced to take some time and get situations under control. Now that things have become more manageable, we are not only able to present to you the new issue, but also able to share some great joy. The personal issue that delayed the issue is that we are expecting our first baby! We are very excited to share this new development in our lives with you, our readers. We have been married now for just over 5 years and after a few years with no luck in the reproduction department, God has given us this little miracle. Heather has been expectedly under the weather, but things are starting to look up. We cannot wait until the baby is born. As we learn more so will you. Our due date falls at the end of April, so we will be blessed with a spring baby. We look forward to taking the great journey God has placed us on, and hope that you will follow along with us. We can’t wait to have more to share!

Tim Burton T

im Burton, his name is associated with many thoughts in people’s minds. His work is often considered “dark” or “gothic.” His works range from horror to comedy and everything in between, but to many his work is often labeled as somewhat bizarre. So, why Tim Burton? What about him made us choose an entire issue about him and how can he be incorporated into ones wedding? If you aren’t a fan of Tim Burtons, these questions are not without merit. It can be easy to write off this sort of theme as weird and unrealistic. However, when you take a look at things a little more closely, you can see there is more than what can be found on the surface. Tim Burton and his works can truly make a great theme for a wedding. Obviously, while this is not for everyone, there are plenty of cases that this can work. Maybe the couple is not into the traditional white wedding, maybe the venue is one that has some gothic overtones, or maybe the wedding is near Halloween. Whatever the reason may be there are definitely cases to consider this type of theme. As for the man himself, Tim Burton is a good choice because of the amount of depth there is to work with. His filmography is vast. There are many films that range through so many categories; there really can be something for everyone. Even more so though, is the styling of his films that can lead to some truly great wedding décor. The work of Tim Burton is visually stunning. All of his movies, while being about specific stories, are works of art. His work is more than just a movie. In all of the films that he works with, he takes the time to look at the visual aspects of the medium and takes it to another level. There are so many aspects of his work that can be drawn upon for inspiration. And the best part about a film that Tim Burton is a part of, it can easily be credited to him. His work is so unique that there are central themes and styles that he uses that make it clearly his own and like no one else’s. If you were thinking about a Halloween wedding or something a little unique, consider Tim Burton. Don’t be scared to go for it. If you take the plunge you won’t be disappointed.

stationery & favors Stationery - Still Elegant When having a Tim Burton inspired wedding, stationery seems like it is the easiest part. There are so many visual aspects to his films that can be incorporated, it seems hard not to find something. The trick however, is not to go over the top with the stationery design you pick. Here are some tricks to picking the right design for your wedding.

• Keep it appropriate. Remember a wedding is a formal and elegant event, even when it is a more laid back

one and offbeat. Try to avoid stationery that looks like it could be used at a child’s birthday.

• Fonts can go a long way. Sometimes the best way to incorporate a theme is through use of a familiar font. This way you don’t lose the formality of the event, but can still get the point across. • Color choice can help. Even with a simple design, using colors that are attributed to a specific movie or

theme can really make the inspiration go a long way without being overbearing.

• Don’t force it. Sometimes when working with a theme, it becomes very easy to try to force something to

work. Doing this will make you unhappy and leave you dissatisfied with the end result.

Favors - Keep it Simple Favors can sometimes be the hardest part to figure out for a wedding. There are lots of different options, but couples always hope that the favor they choose is meaningful or useful. When having a wedding theme like our Tim Burton inspired design, this can be even more difficult. This type of wedding theme can lead to some favors that are too over the top just to fit the theme. While there are lots of options available, here are a few tips that can help you make the right favor choice.

• Think edible. Your favor doesn’t have to be edible, but a favor with an edible component makes it more

functional. In our design, we did “Drink Me” bottles from Alice in Wonderland. The bottle could be kept, but the drink inside was something to be consumed. This increased the function.

• Keep your guests in mind. Think about it from your guest’s point of view. What would you like to

receive as a favor at a wedding you are attending?

• Be subtle. When it comes to themes, you don’t want to beat the guests over the head with the theme. Try to keep the favor tasteful and subtle.

The Straight Razor W hen planning your wedding day, there are things that fall by the wayside and can be overlooked by couples. If your wedding is going to be one with a theme however, these minor details can be just the thing to tie everything together. One of those minor details that couples under utilize is the cake cutting set. There are a variety of unique cake cutting sets available from a variety of vendors. For a Tim Burton inspired wedding, we thought nothing would be better than a straight razor cake knife. It plays homage to his film and can really fit the style of wedding that a couple is going for. No matter what style wedding you are choosing, don’t miss the opportunity to make the most of your cake cutter.

Oakbourne Mansion A great eco-friendly venue. www.oakbournemansion.org Oakbourneevents@gmail.com 1014 South Concord Rd. Westtown, PA

Q. What is the History of Oakbourne Mansion? A. The house was built in 1874 by Mr. and Mrs. John Hulme. In 1882, James C. Smith of Philadelphia purchased the home and 123 acres of land and named it Oakbourne. The Smiths enlarged and refurbished the granite mansion and established a 27-acre arboretum and created a small body of water named Oakbourne Lake. They also had the unique water tower built, which provided fire protection and running water for indoor bathrooms. Mr. Smith died in 1893 and his wife three years later. According to her will the property was left to the Philadelphia Protestant Episcopal City Mission with the stipulation that it was to be used as a retreat for sick and convalescent young woman and thus, The James C. Smith Memorial Home was established in 1896. The home operated for more than 70 years and it has been reported that 15,600 women were guests while the home was opened. Unfortunately, the expense of operating the home became too great, and it was forced to close in 1971. Westtown Township acquired this gem and its surrounding acres during the 1974 and transformed it into today’s Oakbourne Park. The park, arboretum, and recreation facilities are open daily to the public.

Q. What Services are offered? A. There are several options for Mansion rental to accommodate events of various sizes, including a discounted package for renting the entire first floor of the mansion and the surrounding grounds for indoor/outdoor events. The Mansion has a kitchen with commercial refrigerator, prep tables, and stove.

Q. What is the Alcohol policy? A. The Renter may provide Alcoholic beverages provided it is done in accordance with the rules of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. Bars may only be set up in specified areas and no beer kegs are allowed. The sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

Q. How many people can Oakbourne Mansion accomodate? A.

Q. Can ceremonies be held at Oakbourne Mansion? A. Yes. There is a beautiful room with a built in nave called the “Chapel Room” on the floor plan which is perfect for exchanging vows. Most clients opt to both the mansion and grounds for an indoor/outdoor event.

Q. Is there a place for brides and grooms to get ready? A. Yes, there is a room for that purpose which we call the “Bridal Chamber.”

Q. Is there anything about Oakbourne Mansion our readers might be surprised to learn? A. Most visitors are surprised to learn that the Mansion was convalescent home for women for over 70 years.

Q. What is the most memorable/bizarre request a couple has had? A. The weddings we have hosted have typically been traditional. Through the Friends of Oakbourne tree donation program one couple had a tree planted to commemorate their event.

Q. Has Oakbourne Mansion hosted any celebrity weddings? A. No, but the movie “Killer Instinct” was filmed there in 2000, and several professional photographers have used the mansion for photo shoots.

Q. What makes Oakbourne Mansion Unique or Different? A. The beautiful woodwork, stained glass windows and Victorian architecture, as well as the Water Tower make this a unique venue.

Q. What else do you want our readers to know about Oakbourne Mansion? A. Tours of the Mansion can be arranged by appointment. We also have tables and chairs available for rent.

The cascade bouquet featured blood-red gladiolas and faux black branches trailing from a center of carnations, gladiola, and red and black feathers. The small round bouquet of hand-tied natural stems features abracadabra roses, tied with an over-sized black and white striped ribbon. The boutonniere pairs an abracadabra rose with deep red sweetheart roses, tied with black and white chevron grosgrain ribbon and faux black branches. The table scape features silver sequin linens from UltraPom, deep purple chargers, black candelabras with sequined candles, and low arrangements of spider mums, deep red carnations and abracadabra roses in silver mint julep cups. The stationery was custom made and featured the iconic black and white stripes with a swirled backround. The font was from Tim Burton’s movie Sleepy Hollow.

Music for Your Tim Burton Wedding S

By Nick Doak

o, you have decided that your love (and sometimes obsession) of Tim Burton films cannot by suppressed any longer and your fascination of the worlds that are Burton must be reflected on your wedding day. Perfect! This decision allows you to be very creative when selecting music for your wedding ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception – a day that is sure to be like no other. Because Burton films are often accompanied with the signature sounds of American composer, Danny Elfman, you will probably want to hire a pianist to play a transcribed version of a movie’s film score, or just play the song selections through a stereo. The tunes below are suggestions that can be used for pre-service music, groomsmen entrance, bridal party entrance, bridal processional, and recessional. The choice is yours! Batman (1989) Music by Danny Elfman: Batman Theme; Love Theme Edward Scissor Hands (1990) Music by Danny Elfman: Main Theme; Ice Dance; Story Time; Beautiful New World; The Grand Finale James and the Giant Peach (Producer) (1996) Music by Randy Newman: Main Title; Lullaby; Into the Peach Sleepy Hollow (1999) Music By Danny Elfman: A New Day; Sweet Dreams Big Fish (2003) Music by Danny Elfman: Big Fish (Titles); Pictures; In the Tub Corpse Bride (2005) Music by Danny Elfman: The Piano Duet; Victor’s Wedding; The Finale Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) Music by Stephen Sondheim: My Friend; Johanna; By the Sea Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Music by Danny Elfman: Golden Ticket/Factory; Finale Alice in Wonderland (2010) Music by Danny Elfman: Little Alice; Only A Dream; Alice Returns; Dark Shadows (2012) Music by Danny Elfman: Is It her?

destination & honeymoon

London Honeymoon M

ost couples take their honeymoons in places that fall into a particular category. Normally they look to a tropical destination or go for a “romantic” trip to Paris or Italy. But for some brides and grooms, there is a desire to look for something a little more unique. For those couples who are looking for something different and maybe a little Tim Burton inspired, allow me to suggest London. London does not always conjure up the most warm or happy thoughts among people in America. When asked, many people associate London with a dark and dreary little town. They think of food like fish and chips and taking a pub crawl. This popular culture view, most of which is contrived from movies, is not the most flattering view. This, however, is not a real picture of London. London has a variety of things to offer newlyweds. For foodies, there are many places to take in all types of food. One of which is the Borough Market, London’s oldest market. There are vendors there with all sorts of delicious things to eat, including some unique eats. One unique eat they offer – a burgito, a fusion of a burger and a burrito. While there, it is also recommended that you take in Afternoon Tea. What better place to do this then the country that invented it? London is full of all sorts of history. There are a large variety of museums and sites to be seen. It also recommended taking the time to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace. This tradition has been going on for centuries and is a must see. The Tower of London is another famed historical site known for the place where Henry the VIII was murdered, Anne Boleyn was beheaded, and the home of the crown jewels. There is also Westminster Abby and St. Paul’s Cathedral to check out. For the more adventurous couple there is also a day trip to the fabled Stonehenge, the world’s most recognized prehistoric monument. London is more than just history though. There are beautiful views of the country side, and lush rolling fields. For the romantics, there is taking in a night at the theater at world’s most renowned theater district. Another out of this world experience is taking a ride on the London Eye, a large Ferris wheel type structure that overlooks the city of London. At 135 meters tall (nearly 450 feet), it is the largest cantilever observation wheel in the world. Honeymooners are able to rent a private capsule on the London Eye to take in the breathtaking views of the city. Each private booking comes with its very own guide, a bottle of champagne, and a box of truffles making this a perfect romantic experience. Although, it may not be the type of location that many would think of for a honeymoon, London offers newlyweds a great place to enjoy and a variety of unique experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. So, for those couples that are looking for something different and not the standard tropical getaway, London is a great place to consider.

Q. Tell us how you got into photography? That’s an interesting story. I have been teaching Jr. High art. I stopped teaching for a few years and an opportunity came up to apply for an art teaching position. (The sister of the chief of police filled that.) The following year I was called to interview for a photography position. I was offered the job the following day, even though I never had a course in photography and did not own a camera. I took courses at night and then taught what I learned during the day. I’ve now been teaching photography for 16 years.

Q. What types of photography do you specialize in? I am primarily a lifestyle and fashion photographer. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and families. I am currently working with designers developing their look books and shooting Bridal gowns. I am looking forward to more family, children and baby shoots. I also shoot for modeling agencies in helping their models updating their portfolios.

Q. Are Brides and grooms able to use you for engagement shoots and/or couture bridal shoots? Most Definitely. I love to be creative with couples. I know a lot of the wedding photographers include engagement sessions with their packages, but I think I can also offer an alternative to some of the more typical shots. And I try to keep the pricing very reasonable because I know how those planning weddings are very budget conscientious. I Believe I can offer an artistic edge to an engagement shoot. I would love to do a Trash the Dress shoot.

Q. What inspires you as a photographer? The art of it. I love to try and think outside the box. I am constantly looking. At locations, backgrounds, lighting… my mind is always going. I particularly love to experiment with lighting. Sometimes I can’t sleep because I’m thinking of something to shoot. People inspire me. Especially, my wife. We sit at look at pictures together. She shares ideas with me. We are both graduates with art degrees. This shoot was something I’ve been dreaming about for awhile.

Q. When looking for a wedding photographer, what are some things brides should look for? I think the couple should look for a photographer who embodies their dreams of what they envision their wedding to look like. The quality and integrity of the photographer is very important. So is a photographer with a pleasant personality to work well with people, be sensitive to the desires of the couple, and collaborate with the flow of the wedding and reception. So many times the photographer is the last considered and relegated to a small budget, when it is the pictures of the wedding that will last the generations. People will forget what was served for dinner or what the tables looked like or the first kiss unless it has been captured for all to see.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the inspiration and the styling of the shoot we are featuring? When the Tim Burton theme for this issue was talked about I immediately thought of Alice in Wonderland. It seemed to be a very couture type movie, in my mind. So I began to put together this concept, wanting to use the room Alice fell into in the beginning as a springboard to develop a couture bridal shoot: The paneled walls and the checkered board floor, The tea party, The Makeup and hair. I watched the movie several times, pausing it many times to capture in my mind elements I wanted in the set. The makeup artist even had a giant rabbit we could use. It was awesome putting this together.

Q. Who all was involved with helping with the shoot? Wow. It was such a team effort. I developed the concept and then built the wall panels, getting some initial help from Jesse Donaghy and her husband Patrick. Lara Cottingham painted the walls with help from her sister Stephanie. The optical illusion checkered floor was developed and painted by Lara. Couture collars by Ruth Cottingham. Tonia with Aribella Events was instrumental in styling the set with the tea set up and various props and the floral bouquets. Plain Elain provided the hair pieces. MMA (Model Management Agency) was gracious enough to have their models Kristen and Meredith for the shoot. They were excellent. Jenelle Laws did an incredible job with the hair and Jessie Donaghy was fabulous with the makeup. She also came with her husband Patrick and their giant rabbit, Lola. Patrick was great in helping move props and Lola in and out of the different set changes. A special Thank you to the two Bridal boutiques for the wonderful gowns. Country Way Bridal in Haddonfield, NJ and Van Cleve Wedding Pavilion in Paoli PA.
