Dear Readers, We hope you are all having a great summer. With wedding season in full force, we thought that this would be a great issue to work on having a fabulous wedding on a tight budget. What we decided to do was to set a budget and then plan a wedding while trying to stick to that budget. We chose $10,000. Even being in the industry and knowing everything we know, a $10,000 budget was a lot harder than we expected! We had a great time coming up with all of the great ways that you can keep your wedding fabulous and under $10,000. Just remember, prioritize and be realistic, that is the best way to keep your wedding beautiful and under budget. More importantly, no matter how much money you spend, no matter if you have an extravagant wedding or an intimate wedding; at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the person standing across the aisle from you. You are building a life together. As long as you are both happy, your day will be a great one.

Q&A Q- My fiancé and I have a small budget. What’s the easiest way for us keep our budget under control? A- Keep the guest list small! A smaller guest list will not only keep catering costs down, but it will also keep the favor, cake, stationery, floral/décor, and rental costs down. When determining your guest list, limit it to your close family and friends. Don’t feel pressured to invite coworkers, old high school or old college friends you haven’t seen in years, and distant relatives whose names you don’t know or can’t remember. Also, consider making it an adult-only wedding and don’t include a plus one for single guests. Q- I want to provide alcohol to our guests, but my fiancé thinks it’s too expensive! We both think cash bars are tacky. Is there a way for us to find a compromise we both can agree on? A- Absolutely! Skip the full bar and any hard liquor. Simply provide beer and wine to your guests, it’s much more budget friendly. Your guests will definitely appreciate beer and wine only, over no alcohol at all.

Movie & Concert in the Park Total Cost = FREE!

I

n the spirit of working with a wedding under a budget, sometimes it is hard to find the money to have a true date night. It is so important to have date nights with your future spouse. Dating will help keep you connected as a couple. It helps keep your eyes on the most important part of the wedding, each other. That being said, whenever you are planning a large event and money starts to become an issue, there is nothing worse than adding more stress to the situation by using more money. So how can you have fun and connected with a limited budget? There are a variety of ways to have a good time without spending a dime. One suggestion during this time of year is to keep your eye out for either a concert or movie in the park. Hair & Makeup Budget Tips P

By Noreen Diani

rofessional hair and makeup range in price based on their level of experience. Hair and makeup service can range from $ 75 - $ 150 for the bride and $ 75 - $ 100 for the bridal party. What if you can’t afford a professional’s service? Here are four budget friendly tips to get the look you want for your wedding, but without breaking the bank.

1. Ask for the services of a friend. There's a good chance that you're acquainted with someone who knows hair and makeup. Most likely they would be more than willing to help out. They don’t need to be a professional, but it’s important that you trust them to make you look stunning on your wedding day. Offer them a reasonable price. If they offer to do it for free, then consider yourself very lucky. Use your own products. If you don't have the long-lasting cosmetics, then it's best to invest on top-quality brands that you can still use long after your wedding day.

2. If you have the skills… do your own makeup. Most practical brides choose to take this approach if they are skillful in applying makeup. Some may not want the added stress on their wedding day. However, if you're going for a lighter makeup that looks natural then it should be a breeze. Do a few trial runs in the weeks leading up to your wedding day so you can experiment with what looks good and find out what doesn’t.

3. Opt for a DIY wedding hairstyle. Many brides are often intimidated by the seemingly complicated hairstyles, but with practice you will soon realize that it’s much easier than you think. DIY instructions for fashionable wedding hairstyles are abundant online! Check out YouTube.com. To achieve most of these styles you just need a curling iron and lots of hair pins. Of course, you will still need the help of another person so ask a close friend for assistance.

4. Look for credible hair and makeup professionals on wedding vendor websites. Some people acquire a side-job as a beautician by posting their services on wedding vendor websites. Keep in mind that just because they don't work in a salon or they are cheaper doesn't mean they're less talented. Some are trained and certified. It is important to use good judgment in choosing one who is trustworthy and skilled in their profession. These wedding vendor websites have bridal feedback/references so you can see how other brides liked their services.

Wedding Budget Breakdown By Tonia Adleta

T

his breakdown is a good rule of thumb, but it is very challenging to come up with averages for a budget. For example, find a photographer and a videographer for $1,600 can be very challenging. One of the most important things to keep in mind while planning your wedding on a budget (regardless of how big or small your budget) is flexibility. Set an overall amount, but allow some movement. For example, if you’re able to find the perfect wedding gown for $250 then your flower/décor budget just got a little boast. However, if you overspend on your wedding gown by $400, that money needs to come from somewhere. It’s very easy for these things to be forgotten when the emotion of a wedding are involved! Another consideration in your budget breakdown is what each category really includes. For example, the 8% style/beauty, sit down and really decide what’s included in that category. Does it include the gown, undergarments, shoes, veil, jewelry etc.? Another example, are menus, programs, invitations, escort cards, any signage etc. could fall into the 5% stationery/favor category, but it could also factor into some of the larger categories too.

A few more things to keep in mind: - Pick you DIY battles and count the real costs. Don’t assume you will just save money because it’s DIY. - Know your budget and be upfront about it. Communicate your budget to vendors in the beginning of the process. - Weather is very unpredictable. Consider purchasing wedding day insurance. - Wedding planners can save you money in a number of ways. They have preferred partnerships, expertise in creating a budget, prioritizing spending and task management. - Lighting and linen can make a huge impact. Upgrade linens for just you cake table, escort card table, or another specialty table. - Remember to tip your vendors! Even something little like a $5 starbucks gift card with a handwritten note can mean the world to the vendors working hard to create the wedding of your dreams.

The Breakdown **This budget is based on a wedding held on a Sunday with a total of 75 people. There are 3 bridesmaids, 3 groomsmen, 1 flower girl, 1 ring bearer, and 2 set of parents.

Reception – 44%

- Catering/Venue – 35% - Beer/Wine – 2% - Cake – 1.5% - Rentals – 5.5%

Ceremony – 3% Style & Beauty – 8% Music – 8% Photography & Videography – 13% Transportation – 5% Gifts – 2.5% Flowers & Décor – 8% Stationery & Favors – 4.5% Extras – 4%

P

Let’s be Real

lanning a wedding is not an easy task. There are so many variables that overlooking things is not just a possibility, it’s the rule. What can make it even harder is trying to plan a platinum wedding without the platinum budget. This type of situation can make the planning process even more stressful and a lot harder. Here are some tips to help you when you are planning a budget wedding.

• Have realistic expectations. It’s important to realize how much things cost, and what you are getting for

your money. There are going to be things that you may have to compromise or change in your vision to meet the budget goal.

• Set priorities. One of the best things you can do with a budget wedding is to know what is most

important to you. If the pictures or video are most important to you, then realize that is where the substantial investment needs to be and maybe you can cut back on something that is not as important.

• Be open and honest. If you have a budget, don’t go into meetings with vendors and not let them know. If

they are unaware of your constraints, they may offer you things that are way out of your price range. This can make things seem more disappointing as you are setting yourself up to want something that cannot work for your plan.

• Ask for help, especially when meeting wedding professionals. These people are experts in their

respective fields. That being said, they may have tips and tricks to get you under the budget and still have some of the things you desire. Maybe the caterer has a lighter fare option or a plan that can lower the per-head cost significantly. Or maybe the florist can suggest a flower that is similar in look and color to the type you originally wanted, but at a better cost. Utilize the knowledge they have.

• Be savvy. Look on the internet and in books and magazines for smart and savvy ways to achieve

a particular look and save money. There are blogs, websites, and magazines dedicated to finding ways to achieve all sorts of things without spending a lot of cash.

• Be discerning with your choices. Whether you are talking about the guest list or some other part of the

day, think through the options. Make sure you go over the people on your guest list to confirm that everyone on that list is someone who should be there. Eliminate extra costs but not allowing for “plus ones.” There are plenty of small things that can be done that will add up at the end of the day

• Be aware of extra costs. Make sure you look over the documents and ask questions when you are

working with vendors. Keep track of things that may cost extra and make sure you know what they are so they can be avoided. There can be many hidden fees that can easily be avoided by asking questions and looking at paperwork provided. One of the best questions you can ask is “What is included?” This way they will tell you what you are getting and what items may carry an up charge.

The most important thing to remember is to think things through and pay attention to all the information you are getting. Don’t be scared to ask questions and look at all the options. This way you can lay out all of the choices in front of you and make the best decisions. If you keep everything organized, it can really help make the day come together so much easier.

stationery & favors

forgotten details

Those little Extras Total Cost = Varies!

H

ave you ever been somewhere and when the time came to pay, you were certain you had it all figured out down to the penny? Then the bill comes and something is wrong. Maybe you forgot tax or some sort of fee, but in the end the number was just a little different than you expected. The same thing can happen with your wedding. There are many things that can be over looked and really throw off the budget. Here is a least of just a few things that might be easily forgotten.

• Tips/Gratuity: There are many vendors that will be at your event that you should

tip. Musicians, DJ’s, Limo Drivers, Officiants, just to name a few. When doing your budget remember to include the gratuity.

• Rehearsal Outfit: Not only do you need a dress for the big day, you will also need a nice outfit to wear on the night of the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. It doesn’t have to be anything to pricey, but keep it in mind.

• Incidental fees: There are a variety of fees that will need to be paid, but can be

forgotten. Most of the vendors you are going to use need to charge sales tax. There is also postage for the invites, delivery fees for items that need to be delivered to the venue, and shipping costs for item your purchase online. This may even include the cake.

• Reception and Ceremony Accessories: Don’t forget about the little things that you may need for reception and the ceremony. This can include the unity candle, unity sand, a jumping broom, or any other items you may need for the day of the wedding.

venue spotlight

Three Venue Options that are great on a budget

W

hen planning a wedding on a budget one of the most important things to consider is the venue. Venue and food tend to take up a large portion of the budget, so it is important that you pick the right venue. Here are a few venue types and some of the pros and cons when considering them.

Caterer with a venue Pros:

• Lower level of stress. Most caterers with their own venue have someone in house that will make sure that the space and the party are set up and ready to go. They will also handle their own clean up and tear down. • More experienced people. Remember, these professionals do weddings and other events all year long. In most cases, this is the first time you are planning a wedding. They are professionals and will be able to get things done in an easy and efficient way. Unless you are having a wedding planner, you will not have the same expertise at your disposal.

Cons:

• Has the highest overhead. In some cases, there may be a site fee along with the cost of the food. • There are more limits on what you can do. These types of places may come with restrictions that the other two venue options do not. This can include decorating and alcohol restrictions and rules.

Backyard Wedding Pros:

• No site fees. This is generally a great way to avoid the overhead of using a venue. • More “at home” feeling. Having your wedding at a location like this will usually make you feel more comfortable and more at home. • It can be more intimate. This type of wedding can definitely have a more intimate feeling and is usually best suited for smaller groups. • More time to set up and clean up. While you don’t want to be cleaning up for a month, having a wedding in your backyard or in a parents or relatives yard does give you a little more flexibility.

Cons:

• This choice is generally a lot more work. You have to set up everything yourself. Whether it is tents or tables, there is a huge undertaking of pre and post set up. There are companies that can be paid to do this, but then you lose the savings • Restroom facilities. While this may not seem like a big deal, if you have a group of 50 or more people at your wedding, it is something that needs to be considered. • Overall capacity. One thing to consider with this venue type is how large is your space versus how large is your wedding. If you are having 200 people, you will need a significantly larger area to work with. • Zoning concerns. Some townships may require you to get a permit if you are having over a certain number of people. Also be aware that there is a possibility that there may be noise ordinances and time restrictions to consider. Also remember that with a larger group, there could be parking concerns. • Where is the food coming from? If you are using an outside caterer, consider that in the cost and look at the overall cost compared to other options. If you are providing the food yourself, make sure the cost of this is calculated as well to ensure you are saving enough money. Beyond that, remember that this will take someone away from the wedding for a good portion of the day. Also make sure that the area you live in does not have any health department regulations included with serving food to a group this size, as some areas do. • Weather. You will need a “Plan B” in case of bad weather. This can be resolved with a tent or if the house is large enough. Just make sure you know what the plan is before the day of the wedding.

made u look Photography

made u look Photography

Local Park Pros:

• You will be getting married in a beautiful and natural setting. This type of wedding will allow you to really take in nature and incorporate the beauty of the world around you into your wedding. This can also help cut down on decoration costs. • Usually less expensive. The site fees at a park are in most cases lower than other venues and sometimes it’s even free. • There is plenty of space. A wedding in the park allows you a lot more room to move around and spread out.

Cons:

• Food can also be an issue here. Who is providing it and what is the cost? • Restrooms may be an issue here as well. Make sure to scope out where the restrooms are in proximity to where you are having the event., • Be aware of time restrictions. Some parks close at dusk and the party will have to be wrapped up and cleaned up by then. • Clean up and set up. This type of facility usually requires the wedding party to do their own set up and clean up. Remember that when thinking of time. Also, realize there may be a deposit that can be lost if clean up does not meet the parks expectations. • Privacy. Most parks are public. So, if you are having your wedding there and reserved a pavilion, these types of venues do open up the opportunity for “wedding crashers” and are the least intimate place to have your wedding. • Again, weather. You will need a “Plan B” in case of bad weather. This can be resolved with a tent or pavilions. Just make sure you know what the plan is before the day of the wedding.

Total Cost = $1,169.50! • Reception Tables and Chairs = $0 - Use the tables and chairs supplied by the caterer/venue.

• Linens = $187.50 - Use house linens for the tablecloth that are typically already included. - Upgrade grade to colored napkins in Bengaline for added texture and a pop of color. - You can also upgrade other less expensive elements like chair wraps or tables runner

• Centerpieces = $340 - $540 - Use non-floral décor items and small unique containers for your centerpieces. The smaller the container, the fewer the flowers required to create a full look. - Check out second-hand store and even your grandmother’s attic for old books, silver pitchers, vintage teacups, etc. - Use less expensive flowers to build your base and then add in your specialty flowers, like garden roses, in fewer numbers to both provide added emphasis and a pop of color. Using this technique for all of your decor and your flowers will provide a consistent touch throughout your wedding and allow you to still incorporate some of your favorite flowers.

• Bride’s Bouquet = $75 - $125 • 3 Bridesmaids Bouquets = $150 - $225 • 4 Boutonnières = $32 - $60 • Hanging Lanterns = $20 - These can easily be found online and at discount stores, for example Big Lots or Christmas Tree Shop

6 Important Things to Know -when looking for and officiant on a small budgetBy Rev. Ann Fuller 1. Don’t expect a personalized service. You and your fiancé may be ok with the basics, because at the end of the ceremony you will still be legally married! 2. Depending on the location of your ceremony a family member or friend can officiate. 3. In some states, notaries are allowed to solemnize marriage. 4. Decide what’s important to you. 5. Expect to spend extra time searching for an officiant. 6.

If you find an officiant that’s over your budget, don’t pressure them for a lower price; graciously move on to the next.

Total Cost = $1,800!

es, it can be done! There are definitely ways you can save when planning your wedding, while still getting quality vendors. It’s all about compromise and focusing on what is most important to you. For some brides, a $200 wedding gown is all they need, where another bride might fall in love with a $2,000 designer gown. In that case, she would have to give and take as necessary in other parts of the budget. Here are three vendors you will want to hire for your big day and ways to cut down the cost, while still hiring quality professionals and respecting their pricing and options.

• Photography = $1,000 - You could save money by choosing a wedding day that is not “typical” such as a Friday, Sunday or even middle of the week. - Have a small, intimate and personal wedding and hire the Photographer for just a couple of hours to capture photos of your ceremony. - Look into hiring an Associate of a Photographer or Photography company, they may offer steep discounts to book someone still building their portfolio. To be sure you are getting photos you want, ask them for referrals and pictures from past events. Check out www.lisamariefigueroa.com.

• Videography = $300

- There are on-line video services that ship small cameras to you to pass out to your guests. Then you ship the cameras back so the company can download all content and provide some editing then send you a video. Check out www.idocam.com.

• Transportation = FREE! - $500 - A rental car is a great option instead of a limo or sedan. - Ask friends or family to be your designated driver to and from the venue. - Book a limousine for only your trip at the end of your wedding day to the hotel, an average transfer in a limousine will be approximately $500.00 for a nearby trip to your location from your venue. Check out www.VIPlimos.us.

Wedding Music

{A budget that will keep you in the black} By Nick Doak

W

Total Cost = $800!

hen planning your big day, staying true to the budget can be quite a difficult feat. If not careful, choosing the wrong musicians or DJ for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can break the bank. Here are three options for choosing the music for your wedding without exceeding your $800 budget for entertainment. Feel free to mix and match the different scenarios to best fit your wedding style and wishes.

• The DJ Option = $500-$800 In this scenario, a professional DJ is responsible for all that is music at your wedding, including the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. - Pros: Only dealing with one person or company; Easy transitions between special events; DJ can provide limitless variety; Great for both small and large weddings. - Cons: DJ might need to bring more equipment if the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception are in different locations; More equipment to set up equates to higher costs.

• The Live Music Option = $600-$800 Hiring live professional musicians to play at your wedding will definitely create a memorable vibe shared by all. In this option, a lone musician performs for both the ceremony and cocktail hour, while an acoustic duo or jazz combo band entertains the guests during the reception. - Pros: Live music is unique and special. - Cons: Might have to deal with several musicians or entertainment companies; May be best suited for smaller more intimate weddings.

• The Friend of the Family Option = $100-200 Another possibility is to have one of your guests, who is also a musician, perform live for the ceremony and work the personalized iTunes playlist for the cocktail hour and reception as a gift to the bride and groom. In order for all your guests to hear and enjoy the music, you’ll probably need to rent a PA system to connect your iPod. - Pros: Meaningful memory of having a friend play at your wedding; All songs played were personal song choices made by bride and groom; Most cost effective. - Cons: Your friend has a “job” at the wedding; No flowing transitions between songs; Not the best option for the bride who wants an uninterrupted dance floor scene.

destination & honeymoon

the Gift of a

Honeymoon W

hen planning your wedding, the last thing you want to worry about is your honeymoon. Budgets are already tight, and many people find it hard to afford going on a big trip after paying for the wedding day themselves. What better way to have a dream getaway than by using a honeymoon registry! More often than not, most couples already have a lot of the things they need to start their lives together. You can only get so many toasters, coffeemakers, etc. Skip the other registries and just give your guests the option to go on your honeymoon registry. Guests can gift a variety of things. They can gift your hotel stay, your meals, excursions, extras, and on some registries even give your spending money. This is a great way for your guests to give you a gift that you are going to use and remember forever. A honeymoon registry is very customizable, with plenty of options to choose from. Not only is a honeymoon registry great for you and your fiancé, but it’s also great for the guests of the wedding. It’s an easy and convenient way for your guests to get you the gift you want without even leaving their homes. The honeymoon registry allows them to choose how much they want to give. They can pay for a portion or all of any of the items on the registry. Once the item is paid for it is removed, avoiding the chance of duplicate gifts. A honeymoon registry is a great idea for all couples, but especially for couple that already has it all. Make sure to start your honeymoon registry early on so that your guests have a chance to look at it and decide on their gift.

Classical Guitarist

Nick Doak Owner: Nick Doak E-Mail: nickdoak@gmail.com Website: nickdoakguitar.com Phone: (443) 417-5715

Not only is Nick a talented guitarist, he’s a nice and down to earth guy. We were fortunate enough to hear him play live on multiple occasions. Nick also regularly contributes to it’s about details. He’s filled with endless miusic knowledge, tips, and advice.

Q. Tell us about yourself. Personality, likes, dislikes: I am a graduate of West Chester University of Pennsylvania 2011, summa cum laude, with a dual bachelor’s degree in music education and performance, with a focus on classical guitar, as well as, a vocal minor. I grew up in the rural northern Harford County, Maryland and currently reside in West Chester, PA. To date, I have performed in over 100 weddings and numerous special events from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia.

Q. How long have you been a classical guitarist? I have been playing the guitar for about 15 years and have been performing in weddings for the last 10.

Q. What made you choose this profession? I did not knowingly choose to be pursue a career in the wedding industry, but rather fell into overtime. I have always loved to play guitar and perform live. It was not until after I performed my first wedding at age 15 that I realized I could make a living playing guitar for wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions.

Q. Why did you start your own business? I continue to perform at weddings to assure brides and grooms that the musical needs for their wedding ceremonies are provided by a highly qualified, reliable, and experienced musician.

Q. What do you love most about being a classical guitarist? The part I love most about providing music for weddings is by request of the bride, taking a popular song on the radio and arranging it to be played on the classical guitar. It is fun to hear songs out of its original context.

Q. What services do you offer brides and grooms? One of my favorite wedding memories is being the best man at my older brother’s wedding.

Q. What are some of your favorite wedding memories? Elizabeth’s tears, first during her vows and then when she saw her reception for the first time, the look on Stephanie’s face when she realized her husband and I coordinated a surpise renewal of their vows, Jeff ’s note of gratitude after the wedding, Marie’s father’s tears as he walked her down the aisle… each wedding has a favorite moment.

Q. What advice do you have for brides and grooms? Keep it simple.

Q. Is there anything else you would like brides and grooms to know about you? I am very easy to work with and can help you find the right songs for your wedding ceremony that fit your style. Brides and grooms can watch and listen to video clips of a few of my performances on my website at www.NickDoakGuitar.com.
