CONTRIBUTORS

Celebrating our Sixth Year in Publication!

Here at IT’S YOUR HOME Magazine, it is all about YOU and the community we live in.

It has been our pleasure to provide a sense of close community living with spotlights on the people that make Pasco County special through our Hometown Stories and the Local Business Owners that make it home. We encourage you to live, play, shop and buy local. Debbie Dawson Publisher/Editor/Realtor | My passion is connecting local businesses to the residents of our community. With many years of experience in sales and marketing I have built a foundation for promoting small to mid-size businesses including my own career in real estate. I enjoy spending my free time with my family and exploring new finds in our community. My happy place is at the beach, sand in my toes, watching the sunset while enjoying a perfect gulf breeze.

Tom Cristello Creative Director | I began doodling at the age of 2 and have been designing something ever since. I now have an extensive background and education in Marketing, Art and Design. I use that to be a “graphic problem solver,” making ideas develop and take form. I like nothing better than transforming a vague idea into an effective design. When not on the job you will probably find me on my motorcycle, at the beach, or looking for some kind of new adventure.

Doreen Damm Publishing Director | I have a background in Management, Sales and Visual Merchandising, I have always enjoyed doing a job that benefited others. I am a Native Floridian with a passion for nature and an interest in local history. I get inspiration from our many parks, and enjoy photographing the many visitors to my wildlife garden.

Kenzie Clarke Intern | A young graphic/web designer with a passion to create. I paint, play multiple instruments, surf Pinterest for hours, drink coffee, and most importantly - work til my task is completed to perfection. What better traits are there than that?

Debra Taylor Tee Editorial Director | My background includes public relations with an emphasis on journalism. The publicist in me enjoys promoting local businesses through entertaining articles, profiles, and blogs. I love to live, work & play in West Tampa Bay, because being on or near the water is truly a tranquil, inspirational and spiritual experience I cherish.

Diana Jerome Senior Wine Consultant - Time for Wine | Author of “Time For Wine” - My background in Human Resources, as well as Sales/Marketing, have enabled me to bring that skill set to Time for Wine as their Senior Wine Consultant. One of the benefits of this job is that everyone is always happy to see “the wine lady.” Making your wine experience personal, unique and professional is what we strive for… how great is that?

Todd Unbehagen President / CEO, Unbehagen Advisors | I have a background in tax, small business accounting, payroll and insurance. I graduated from UF and have degrees in accounting, finance and economics. I have a passion to guide others to succeed financially in most aspects of their life. I enjoy all of the outdoor activities that Florida has to offer with my family including, saltwater fishing, boating, hunting, beaches and baseball.

Barbara Marville-Kelly Ageless Living | My real estate background allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life much like my TV Hosting. I enjoyed a wonderful career at The Home Shopping Network, which lead me into my current Hosting position on We Beam TV. “My Passion is LIFE, making a difference, family, friends, good health and DANCE!!”

Paul Friedlander Membership Director, “West Pasco Chamber of Commerce” | I am very active in the Pasco County community through various prominent organizations and numerous voluntary and fundraising community roles. Family means everything to me and I include them whenever possible in community events. My wife Pam and I spend our “time off” visiting with my children, grandchildren and Mom. Outdoor activities with the family include the park, kayaking and swimming. Indoor TV time can range from sports to the Disney Channel and there is always time for a good read.

Ed Caum Tourism Manager, Pasco County | Author of “It’s Your Backyard“ | My background as retired military with a combination of communication, marketing and sales skills have served me well in promoting Pasco, both nationally and internationally. l serve on two Visit Florida’s committees and also am a board member for the Pasco County Leadership Program. I love the opportunity Pasco Tourism gives me to work outdoors on projects. Pasco is the perfect place for me to enjoy my hobbies, boating, fishing, kayaking and photography.

Testimonials: “I’d like to say thanks to Amanda Alexander for so efficiently marketing and selling my home. After no action from a previous Realtor, I turned to Amanda Alexander. My house was difficult to sell due to a roof needing to be put on. She found a roofer that would put the roof on and get paid at the closing. Amanda was very professional and always kept me informed. She had full advertising, open houses, giving all out attention and within just a month we had a sale! All inspections and details were well

cared for, making it an easy transaction. She was so pleasant to work with and I feel I’ve made a friend whom I’d like to recommend to anyone needing her knowledge, thoroughness and service.” Laura L. Maranto “Amanda was a pleasure to wor with. She was our listing agent for our first family home in the Westchase area. She was very prepared from day one! She was always very patient and understanding of our needs. Amanda is very tenacious and she will work harder than most realtors you will meet in Florida!” Kerry Anderson

“Amanda was amazing to work with, very thorough and she paid close attention to what we really wanted. She found us the perfect house for our family and we could not be happier. It has been such a pleasure working with Amanda through the sale and purchase process. I would highly recommend her for your real estate needs. She is willing to fight for you when you need her to, and she is there to listen as you are in the process of a major decision-making process. A Guide To Creating A Cohesive Home, Inside And Out

From Table to Gables by Erin Viera

Whether you’re moving into a new home or remodeling an old one, the best place to look for design inspiration is right under your feet — in the details of the home itself. Taking decorating cues from your home’s architecture can go a long way toward creating a cohesive look when it comes to choosing furniture and decor. Let’s start by heading outside and taking a good, long look at your house. How would you describe its architectural style? Your answer may be simple enough if your home falls within a common category such as Victorian, classic Colonial, or ranch. But you may also feel unsure, especially if your home, like many in America, incorporates elements from several different styles. If you don’t have a good sense of your own personal style, even the simplest design project will feel like a challenge — and your home could wind up looking like a disconnected mash-up of furniture and accessories. While it’s acceptable — and even encouraged — to combine decor styles when

furnishing your home, it’s a good idea to have a handle on your favorite looks before getting started. According to interior designer Kerrie Kelly, author of the book My Interior Design Kit, there are three “master” styles that will help you lay the underpinnings for a well-designed room that reflects your personality and taste. “Although there are a seemingly unlimited number of highly specific design styles that can be incorporated into a space, a case can be made that they all evolved from one of the following three styles: traditional, modern, and transitional,” she says. To keep the look cohesive and complementary, try to select items from two of the master styles listed above. Most importantly, trust your instincts. “Some of the most effective interiors combine styles in an unexpected way,” Kelly says. “The curated look of vintage and modern or rustic and minimalist typically reflects the true story of those who reside through thoughtful, meaningful design elements.” Read more at www.homes.com/blog

The mission of Marjorie’s Hope is to help economically disadvantaged children within Pasco County. By doing so, this successful non-profit remains instrumental in raising children’s hopes, self esteem, and grades! After all, the children of today are the future of tomorrow. This school season – thanks to many local businesses, service clubs, private donors, and volunteers – Marjorie’s Hope provided more than 1,300 backpacks containing school supplies and personal hygiene items to Pasco children in need. The organization’s goal for the 2015-2016 school year is to open a free Clothing Closet for needy Pasco students. For this dream to become a reality, Marjorie’s Hope depends upon the support of the community, local business partners, private donors, volunteers, and most importantly, the generosity of an individual or property management company, willing to donate a retail store-front for one year. Since the Clothing Closet will not be open to the public, a high traffic store-front location is unnecessary. The first-year-free rental would allow the organization time to establish the Clothing Closet, cover monthly utility expenses, and actively seek grants to pay moving forward. While it saddens all involved that there is a desperate need for this venture here, Marjorie’s Hope seeks to fill a void for students, agencies and court systems within our community.

& BEAUTY

The purpose of the Clothing Closet is to provide needy, schoolaged children a place to shop…free of cost, embarrassment and humiliation. Each child referred by the Pasco County courts; school resource officers and administrators; social service agencies; clergy; youth & families domestic violence shelters; mobile medical units; and other approved agencies, will have the opportunity to shop once annually and, eventually, twice, for a designated number of clothing articles, shoes and accessories. If a child only has clothing with holes or stains, they often become targets of bullying and social isolation. By providing gently-used and new clothing items, Marjorie’s Hope is striving to thwart acts of bullying, and promote social acceptance among the peers of the students they help. The store-front should be located on a public transportation route, as a convenience for families without transportation. Hours of operation must accommodate families requiring evening and weekend hours, with expanded times for back-toschool and holiday breaks. Shopping will be by appointment only, and volunteers will assist shoppers and accept donations during regular hours or by appointment for pick-up/delivery. If you have a store-front you are willing to donate for one year, or for more info. about Marjorie’s Hope Clothing Closet, corporate sponsorships and donations, visit www.marjorieshope.com, or contact Debi Shackowsky at 727-776-5458.

Fall Root Vegetables

While Root vegetables may not be the most attractive-looking specimens in the produce department, these humble tubers — beets, turnips and carrots, among them — are winning the hearts of restaurant chefs across the country. And you’ll find they hold a delicious place in your own kitchen as well. Autumn is prime time for savoring these hardy roots because the frosty weather transforms their starches into sugars. Root vegetables are especially suited to roasting and braising — cooking techniques that intensify the vegetables’ natural sweetness. You can also simmer them in soups and stews, or steam and mash them for side dishes. However they are prepared, root vegetables will add a sweet note to your autumn table. They not only taste good but, they are good for you. Due to their ability to absorb vitamins and minerals from the ground, root vegetables grown in rich soil are full of nutrients and are an excellent source

of fiber, vitamin and antioxidants. Several have remarkable healing properties. Beets provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support. They are especially good for the nervous system and eye health. They help prevent heart disease and cancer, and their fiber is especially healthy for the digestive tract. Beets contain folate, manganese, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin C, B6, and iron. Turnips are a good source of vitamin C, while the greens (the tops) are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, folate and calcium. Carrots are a well-known and proven aid to eye health, including glaucoma and cataract prevention. Newer studies reveal their ability to prevent colon cancer and cardiovascular disease. They are an excellent source of vitamin A, with one cup of carrots providing more than the daily requirement. They are also a good source of vitamin C, B, K, E, manganese, potassium and more.

STORY

by Debra Taylor Tee

O

ne entry on dictionary.com defines “aesthetics” as a study of the mind and emotions in relation to the sense of beauty.

That is exactly the comprehensive approach taken by Dr. G Kashlan when he consults with and treats his patients at his practices. Dr. Kashlan started with Sunshine Primary Care in Trinity. Later, he branched out to Lutz with Prime-Aesthetica Med Spa Centers. Dr. Kashlan explained, “We have only one, main goal: To provide the best quality of care utilizing the most up-to-date technology and cosmetic protocols… to help our clients lead healthy, beautiful and happy lives!” Dr. Kashlan graduated from medical school in 1996. He completed his first Medical Residency at AUH in 1999, and he began a postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 2001, he moved to Rochester, NY, to do his 2nd Medical Residency at Unity Health System, a division of University of Rochester. His strong work ethic and tireless drive earned him the “Outstanding Intern Award” at Unity Health System. It was in Rochester, where Dr. Kashlan met his wife of twelve years, Bayan. “My wife used to live in Toronto, Canada,” Dr. Kashlan explained. “We had Lake Ontario standing between us for a while. However, I took advantage of the first visit Bayan made to Rochester. We met, chatted, and fell in love in April 2002.” They did not waste any time! Dr. Kashlan and Bayan were married not long after their first meeting. They moved to Trinity in 2010, and currently reside in New Tampa. The happy couple has three beautiful children: daughter, Yomna (11), son, Hamza (6), and daughter, Seema (2), and they all enjoy spending quality time as a family. “You can’t go wrong about the saying ‘happy wife equals happy life!’ It is not always easy to find and create balance between my personal and professional lives, but

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

I try my best. I want to be an ‘A’ student at home too,” Dr. Kashlan quipped. His passions include travel, theatre, culinary goodness, his profession, and the many ways he is able to enhance the health and beauty of his patients. Dr. Kashlan feels “right at home” practicing cosmetic medicine in the Lutz, and Trinity/New Port Richey communities. Conversely, his patients have shown their appreciation for his kindness and compassion, by honoring him with a “Patients’ Choice Award” and “Most Compassionate Doctor” honors. He and his team were awarded “The Best of New Port Richey 2013”, and the American Medical Association recognized Dr. Kashlan with a “Certificate of Appreciation” for his service. Dr. Kashlan and his skilled staff utilize the latest in safe, state-of-the-art cosmetic procedures and weight loss techniques, and the doctor and staff remain current with technological advancements by regularly participating in continuing education opportunities. His practice specialties include laser hair removal; laser face/skin resurfacing/rejuvenation; non-surgical facelifts & nose jobs; Dysport/Botox and Restalyne treatments; Obagi and Skin Medica products and peels; chemical peels and microdermabrasion; massage therapy (deep tissue, relaxation, electro-stimulation and ultrasound); anti-aging and bio-identical hormone replacement; weight solutions and obesity services, including HCG, medications and cryolipolysis/cool sculpting, radio-frequency and cavitation; spider vein treatment and sclerotherapy; and more! The good doctor admits that his office feels like his second home, and he enjoys working alongside his talented staff members, as well as interacting daily with his patients. He considers all of them “extended family”. “I have practiced medicine in many places and moved through different cities and states, but I’ve never been happier since I moved my practice here,” Dr. Kashlan confessed. 13

Halloween Treats

Heathly Quick Mummy Munches Spread pizza sauce on toasted bread or snack crackers for the base of this fun take on pizza bites. Zig zag strips of cheese for the bandages and add sliced olives or mini turkey pepperoni for the eyes.

“Boo”nanas This quick is as simple as peeling a banana and slicing it in half. Press chocolate chips into the ends for the eyes and nose. What to take it up a notch, insert a popcycle stick and dip the banana in melted white chocolate before adding the eyes and mouth and put in freezer to harden the chocolate coating. Pumpkin Patch Peel clementines or tangerines and insert celery sticks for the stem. These sweet and juicy snacks will be gone before you can say “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown”. Monster Mouths Core and slice apples, then spread creamy peanut butter on one side of each apple slice. Place a few mini marshmallows along the edge with the peel and top with another apple slice. Deviled Spiders Take your traditional deviled egg recipe and creep it up. Slice pitted black olives in half and place one half in the middle of the egg. Slice more olives lengthwise into eight pieces and push into the filling for the legs. Octopus Dogs My personal favorite. Starting lengthwise an inch from one end of the hot dog, slice it in half all the way to the other end. Turn the dog and slice in half again. Now you have 4 legs. For an 8-legged octopus, carefully slice each leg in half again. Place hot dog on plate with whole end standing up and legs fanning out in a spiral. Depending on the wattage, microwave dog 35 to 50 seconds. The legs will curl and you have an octopus.

hen young people enter the wide, wild world of business, it can be challenging to successfully blaze trails, especially when you don’t know the right people with whom to associate.

Angel Cook understands this, and she has lived in West Pasco County her entire life. She knows how it feels to be new to networking, and she has felt the awkwardness that accompanies meeting strangers and pressing palms in an attempt to capture new customers and repeat business.

HERO

By Debra Taylor Tee community that we are strong, we are excited, and we are eager to help be a part of what makes West Pasco so great!” The Young Professionals also participate in fundraisers throughout the year, with their two major efforts being Sleek & Sexy planned for November, and the CHASCO Bowling Tournament held on the Tuesday during the CHASCO Fiesta. The monies raised from these events benefit local, non-profit organizations including, but not limited to United Way, SPCA, PACE Center for Girls, The RAP House and the Center for Independence.

Angel first embarked on a career in insurance 14 years ago, and she promptly realized that even though she knew a community of people, it would require a focused effort to approach them as potential customers and sell them property and casualty insurance.

Angel and her husband are parents to two girls: Lexi (15) and Taylor (11), and they certainly lead by example, instilling in their daughters the value of creating balance between family, career, and community to truly have it all.

That’s when the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce became a huge asset to her and to others, as a bridge between area professionals and customers from all walks of life and business genres.

A real angel at work in our area, Angel is an active volunteer, giving back to our community through various organizations, aside from WPYPG: Rotary Club of Trinity, Community Service Council, Networking Professionals Inc., Junior Service League of Greater New Port Richey, Trinity Business Association, West Pasco Business Association and The RAP House.

An important organization within the Chamber, known as the West Pasco Young Professionals Group, was formed to help individuals like Angel – new to the business world – build a customer base through networking opportunities with others of similar mind-set within the community. Angel explained, “I became involved the first year it was organized in 2007, thanks to Kelly Armstrong and Tina Shelton. I was new to networking and needed like-minded, career-driven people to help me grow as a salesperson.”

“I have to say, the best part of living in West Pasco is the community. We have amazing people who generously donate their time, money and complete dedication to helping this community grow and improve. They come together for a cause and will not stop until the goal is reached. I am proud to call West Pasco home and would not have it any other way,” Angel added.

Eight years later, Angel is the newly-appointed chairperson of the WPYPG, and she is optimistic about the group’s future growth and development. “We plan on having new, engaging speakers at each meeting, that will educate and help the Young Professionals in any area of business they may be in. LIVING Taylor Made to a Tee

Celebrating 50 years A few weeks ago, I celebrated my 50th birthday, which is a huge milestone! Many things have happened in the last five decades, lots of which have changed all of our lives for better, and in some cases, for worse. As I reflect on days gone by, there are several advancements that stand out the most. It’s a fact: I have a love-hate relationship with technology. However, computers drive my professional life and that of my husband. I am a writer, and Mike is the senior tech support analyst for a POS software company in Clearwater/New Port Richey. Since I did not take business or accounting classes in high school, my first experience with computers came in college. Today, children are exposed to computer applications at very young ages, and they will never know the joys of broken typewriter ribbons or white-out correction fluid. Alexander Graham Bell would be amazed at the strides technology has made with his popular invention considering the advent of Smartphones. Forget about rummaging for coins to make a call from a pay phone, or calling loved ones “collect” long-distance. Today, nearly every wireless plan offers unlimited calling to practically anywhere in the world. Gone are the days of vinyl records; eight-track tapes; cassettes; Beta and VHS tapes. Our favorite tunes get downloaded through our MP3 players and IPods. Who would have thought the movie theater would become a dangerous place? No worries! New movies will soon be released on Blue Ray and DVD, and I can easily access Red Box or Netflix to find my faves. The Internet is a wonderful thing… sometimes. The resources available are endless, so a visit to the local library is now an afterthought. Social media has taken the world by storm, and to some, by hurricane! It is amazing to re-connect with pals from high school and college and continue our friendships from back in the day. Yet, be careful! It is very easy to be mislead, scammed and hacked by imposters using the deep web for evil and often, criminal reasons. (If you think I’ve watched too much CSI-Cyber, think again.) When we post on these social media sites, we must exercise caution! The wrong posts can easily come back to haunt us when we least expect it. Whatever is put into cyberspace cannot be removed, and it will not disappear. It’s out there for everyone to see and scrutinize forever. I’m thankful that, so far, I have survived the many technological advancements over the last five decades. So far, it’s been real, and it’s been fun. Fortunately for me, it’s been real fun! Cheers to the next 50, and all that comes with it!

The Pass-Along Garden As told by Frances Clark Mallett, Written by Susan Mallett Eckstein

The carved wooden sign in my front yard reads, “Elijah Paul Duncan Garden”. It might seem odd to see such a sign in Frances Mallett’s yard where it sits among the ferns, bromeliads, and colorful flowers. The story behind that sign tells of long ago friendship, love of plants, and making home where your flowers grow. In the mid 1950’s, E. P. Duncan, an avid fisherman, pulled off Highway 19 at my husband’s bait and tackle shop, The Outpost, to buy supplies and get the scoop on the local fishing hot spots. Duncan had recently driven from California cross country in a homemade truck camper to find a friendly small town on Florida’s Gulf coast where he could afford to live on a modest, retired military pension. New Port Richey fit the bill and boasted lots of good fishing spots. My husband is quite a talker, so he and E.P. soon became friends. After meeting our children, a bond of love grew where Duncan became a frequent guest at our family dinners and a fishing buddy for our oldest son.

20 Celebrate Fall Issue 2015

To all of us, he was “Sarge” and we loved him. I had always been a practical gardener, focusing mainly on growing vegetables that we ate. It was Sarge, whose small trailer was surrounded by beautiful flowers growing in pots (he had a special touch with plants), who encouraged me to grow flowering plants. He shared cuttings, potted plants, and seeds; I was hooked. Sarge was generous with his flowers and told me that I was always to share plants with others so that they might experience the joy and beauty of gardening. Today my yard is filled with native plants and other plants that thrive in the hot climate of our area. As this legacy continues, I share cuttings from a gorgeous pink plumeria, brilliant blooming bromeliads, mysterious night blooming cereus, salvia plants to attract butterflies, self-seeding New Zealand spinach, and even let the caterpillars eat my parsley so they can become beautiful Monarch butterflies. The “Elijah Paul Duncan Garden” sign today reminds us of family memories of love for a man, his love of growing things, and the passing along of plants to others so his legacy continues well into the future.

The Evolution of Thanksgiving by Debra Taylor Tee Thanks-giving has long been celebrated around the world, going back to ancient times when Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, and Jews spent several days giving thanks to their gods for plentiful harvests. Our own country’s Thanksgiving story was taught to us when we were small children, even though it has met with controversy over the years. As the story goes, following a long, arduous pilgrimage across the pond via the Mayflower, the pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, and settled in New England. After their first successful harvest, they invited their Native American neighbors to sit down and share a meal, giving thanks for their bounty. Historians recognize the conflicting details that surround the story of America’s first Thanksgiving, as it was not necessarily a pleasant coexistence between the pilgrims and the Native Americans, as we as children, were led to believe. Furthermore, a Florida connection predates that which we recognize as “The First Thanksgiving”, because historical proof legitimizes that Spanish explorer, Pedro Menéndez de Avilé, invited members of the Timucua tribe to celebrate mass giving thanks to God for their safe arrival on this continent, following their journey to America in 1565. In 1789, President George Washington and the Continental Congress declared several days of thanks-giving in celebration of a successful conclusion of our country’s Revolutionary War of independence, as well as the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. In 1819, New York became one of several states to begin observing Thanksgiving on an annual basis. Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the

United States in 1863, when in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln commended Americans to give thanks to God, lift up the widows, orphans and families of those lost in the war, and “heal the wounds of a nation.” This adoption of a national holiday had been instigated by author Sara Josepha Hale, best known for her nursery rhyme, “Mary had a Little Lamb”. She led a tireless, 30-year campaign, writing letters, publishing recipes for pumpkin pie and stuffing, and simply promoting the concept of a designated day for Thanksgiving. President Lincoln finally succumbed and declared “Thanksgiving Day” to be the fourth Thursday in November each year. This remained in place until the Great Depression, when in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up one week, in an effort to stimulate retail sales prior to the holidays in the midst of the failing economy. “Franksgiving” as it became known, was met with much opposition, and in 1941, the holiday again returned to the fourth Thursday in November. An interesting development in the evolution of Thanksgiving occurred in 1989, when President George H.W. Bush began a tradition of administering a Presidential Pardon for one or two lucky turkeys each year. A pardoned turkey (or turkeys, as the case may be) would never end up on anyone’s dinner table, but would live happily ever after on a farm. This tradition has held steadfast and true through the current presidential administration. It is true that turkey is the main course of the majority of Thanksgiving feasts in the United States, even though venison and fowl (a category that did not include turkeys), were the entrées our pilgrim ancestors prepared. Our accompaniments most often include stuffing (or dressing, if not cooked in the bird), potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, just to name a few. Our pilgrim counterparts and their Native American guests added corn, nuts, grains, and cranberries, to their Thanksgiving table. They celebrated for as many as three days, feasting, hunting, and participating in other forms of entertainment. Today, we, too, celebrate for three or four days feasting, watching parades and football games and volunteering on Thanksgiving Day; holiday shopping starts early on Black Friday; and visiting local businesses on Shop Local Saturday is becoming the norm. Our day of rest comes Sunday, when we go online in search of the best deals for Cyber Monday shopping. Our forefathers would be amazed at this celebration’s transformation over the centuries, the lengths Americans go to celebrate, and the extraordinary heights our economy is stimulated, thanks to Thanksgiving holidays! *Facts obtained from www.history.com/topics/thanksgiving/ history-of-thanksgiving

Welcome Fall at the Front Door Make a welcoming entry for guests by setting up displays of fall-themed items placed in layers on your front porch. The traditional favorites such as pumpkins and bales of hay, can be layered with mums in rustic chic baskets. Add visual interest by varying the colors, sizes and shapes, and consider artificial so they last in the Florida heat. Decide on a color scheme with orange and tan as your foundation. Put an emphasis on the natural elements and use accent pieces for interest. Think outside the box, try using a birdbath with cascading ivy as a plant stand for the mums and hide the pots with mini pumpkins and gourds.

Wagons, wheelbarrows and antique crates make a great home for seasonal flowers. Make them pop by adding red pepper plants or crotons and bring in the sunshine with yellow marigolds. Have fun with your wreath. There are several purchasing options available, but how about making your own this year. A quick trip to the craft store for supplies and your wreath will reflect your personal style. For the beginner, a grapevine wreath with floral stems, sprays and twigs is the way to go. The stems tuck out of sight, no tools required. You can even weave ribbons through the vines and let them hang without the challenge of tying that perfect bow.

Three Season Holiday Décor

by Doreen Damm

With temperatures still in the 90’s and everything a rich green, how do you get in the fall mood? Well, instead of the leaves changing colors, you can change the accent colors in your home. 1. Look for decorative pillows not only in colors of orange and rust, but textures or patterns that give a sense of the great outdoors. 2. It may be too warm to use a throw blanket but it is an easy way to suggest it is cooler outside. Choose beaded fringe or a bold plaids to drape of the arm of a chair. 3. Candles, pine cones and leaves can add interest to your coffee table. Arrange them loose on a remnant of burlap or place them in a large vases of varying heights. 4. Don’t forget the dining table. You can set autumn vegetables, nuts and berries in a grapevine wreath as the center piece. Insert spikes of wheat or dried flowers among the vines. This autumn décor will spice up your home from fall to Thanksgiving. Simply add some pumpkins to take it into Halloween and then set the dinner table for company with table runners, placemats and napkins for Thanksgiving.

WEST PASCO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

On The Cutting Edge

A century ago, only 40 major U.S. cities had a chamber of commerce. Today, there are more than 7,000 chambers, boards of trade, and designated nonprofits advancing the interests of their communities. Political and civic leaders across the country recognize that a chamber creates a stronger, more dynamic community. Companies are interested in a range of issues, from health care and transportation to education and workforce development. Further, scarce resources are causing politicians, nonprofits, and business leaders to collaborate more than ever. A chamber is uniquely qualified to be the focal point for this collaborative effort and to effect positive change for both businesses and the community. The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce is on the cutting edge of working with these organizations and bringing the West Pasco Community together, strengthening our economic climate on a daily basis. It is not about the arrival of the destination, it is the discoveries of the journey, embracing new experiences, developing deeper relationships with others. Meeting any obstacles with a clear and loving heart, the seat of our soul and power in decision making! Living each day as if it could be our last! Looking at life with a common evaluation gauge, on a scale from 1-10 has come to light with my husband and I recently as a result of both of us achieving a “10” score, from my dancing and his evaluation of a recent workshop he did! The number “10” just keeps popping up! When that happens, it becomes another “AHA moment” and evolves into a concept or idea. So this time we are using a 10 as our gauge in evaluating life with no judgment just a simple evaluation process that lets us know what frequency we are living in. Are we living in the higher positive frequency and in the “groove” moving forward with unwavering passion for what we do in our golden years assuring that they ARE golden and not rusty years? Or are we in a lower frequency just slugging along in life, simply existing? It all comes back to choices! Business & FINANCE HOW ARE YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUMS CALCULATED? by Charles S. Philips, PLC Having practiced in the area of insurance law for over 20 years and having had the legal experience of working both sides of the industry I thought I fully knew how the insurance business worked, including how insurance premiums were calculated. I had always believed that some of the most important factors were driving record, age, mileage driven per year, and where you lived to name a few. I also had heard rumors throughout the years that your credit score could also factor into the process, but it was just that, a rumor. I am probably dating myself here, but as Gomer Pyle used to say “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise”. Consumer Reports magazine recently completed a lengthy, extensive study on insurance rates, collecting over 2 billion price quotes from up to 19 car insurers including all of the standard carriers in each state for all 33,419 general zip codes and they determined that your credit score more than your driving record can result in you being charged more for your car insurance. The price data revealed that even people that had never had an accident could pay higher premiums if their credit score was not up to their insurance company’s credit score standards. Insurance companies create their own proprietary score that is different than your FICO score which they use to determine your car insurance premiums. They do not disclose this scoring formula either.

Reports found that some notable insurance companies charge their loyal customers a “loyalty penalty”, hiking up their rates just for the mere fact that they were complacent and continued to renew their auto coverage with that company. Sounds crazy doesn’t it?

Also check the discounts that you are allegedly receiving for multiline coverage, multicar coverage, and a security system, to name a few as you might not be saving as much as you think.

I recommend you thoroughly read this article from Consumer Reports, then shop your coverage and ask the questions that are raised by this article. Thereafter, check your FICO score and get a copy of your credit report so that if there are any errors on it you can try to correct them. Finally, if your company penalizes you for being a loyal customer and raises your rates just because of that fact, shop your coverage and move on to a different company. You will probably be just as shocked as I was to also learn that being a loyal customer who renews annually could actually result in you being charged more in premiums each year. Consumer

Jon Chelena

aka

JC Nasty

STAR

by Debra Taylor Tee

When the Buccaneers came to Tampa Bay in 1976 as an NFL expansion team, young Jon Chelena became an instant fan. After all, he had been born and was being raised in Tampa, he loved the sport, and it made perfect sense that he would throw his support behind his hometown team. Little did he know then what being a Bucs fan would come to mean to him through the years.

Jon attended home games with his family and friends, but one friend in particular, Keith, kicked it up a notch in 1989, and began a super-fan persona known as Big Nasty. He “painted-up” his face, donned a Bucs jersey and other gear, and began pumping up the spectators. A few months later, Jon and his brother, Steve, joined the fun becoming JC Nasty and Nasty Steve. Collectively, the three are known as the Nasty Krewe. Jon explained, “I started JC Nasty as a crazy guy who would go to the games, cheer, and get other fans fired up on the 3rd down and defense, but along the way something happened. I realized that adults, and especially kids, liked JC Nasty, and that I could use that crazy guy as a platform for some really great things in life!” And that is exactly what he did.

Jon admitted, “I plan to do this the rest of my life. I know my calling is to motivate people and encourage them to be the best that they can be. Rayun | Sauvignon Blanc This Sauvignon Blanc makes you feel like there is a plateful of fresh seafood in front of you, and the cool ocean breezes are just a tickle at your neck. Crisp and refreshing, with waves of lacyand limpid juice that suggest citrus and pineapple, this white just can’t be beat on quality or on price. With intense fresh aromas, with notes of green apple, melon and zippy gooseberry, this Rayun has a crispy refreshing palate, with a good persistent finish. The word “Rayun” meaning “blossom” comes from the language spoken by the natives of Chile before the discovery of the Americas. Hands down one of the best value wines in the shop. This excellent Sauvignon Blanc from Chile over delivers and easily drinks like twice the price. If you are looking for a smooth wine that is well balanced, with hints of citrus, but yet bright and flavorful, then we have the wine for you! “You can serve these delightful tacos with our Rayun Sauvignon Blanc and a tossed salad. Trinity’s Premier Coffeehouse by Christy Collier

From the Pacific Northwest coffee country to Trinity, Florida... Perks Coffeehouse knows specialty coffee. Clara Rose, the owner, and her daughter, Danielle, who works at the coffeehouse, are from the Pacific Northwest, an area known for coffee. “I grew up where coffee was King,” Clara Rose said. “I wanted to bring that coffee culture to the area.” Perks coffee is made from specialty beans; a step above premium beans. All Perks coffees are locally roasted. Buddy Brew, a local roaster from Tampa, is their coffee supplier. “Tampa has some really good local roasters. Buddy Brew has the most amazing coffee,” said Clara Rose, Perks Coffeehouse owner. The owner has been trained by a master barista. She learned and trained in understanding the differences in coffee beans. Perks offers two types of coffee brews, a house blend and a bold roast. The house blend has a mellow flavor incorporating an Ethiopian coffee bean and a Brazilian coffee bean. The bold roast is a Sumatra coffee bean, but a lighter roasted Su-

matra with a rich, full-bodied flavor. All their coffee beans are fresh and roasted weekly for Perks. Bakery and other items are also local with the exception of a few that could not be obtained in the Tampa Bay Area. Perks continues to expand their coffeehouse services, and they will extend their hours in the near future. They offer retail items, such as, mugs, travel mugs, and cold brew beverages for on-the-go. Coffee is sold by the pound, and coffee related gift items, seasonal gift baskets, and gift cards are sold in the coffeehouse. The mission of Perks Coffeehouse is to create a sense of community and a place for people to enjoy a great cup of coffee while offering a space to have meetings or a nice atmosphere to relax. The coffeehouse offers open mic night once a week, and it is a prime business location for numerous small business meetings throughout the week. The Trinity location was ideal for their mission. “I love how everyone is looking for a place to connect, be a community, and look for places to create community,” said Clara Rose.

The Northern Most Barrier Island - Anclote Key The Anclote Key lighthouse sits on the southern tip of Anclote Key, off the Coast of Pasco County, Florida at the mouth of the Anclote River. Historically, it is known for its sponges which are found on the bottom of the Anclote River and along the Nature Coast. But to locals it is where you go for sun, surf and sand! This island draws locals in droves who love to take their boats and personal watercraft out to soak up the sun, walk the beach, go shelling, swim and visit with other island lovers. It has also become a popular destination for tourists who visit the island as part of their vacation. Charters from Pasco County run out to the island on a regular basis and pontoon boats and can be rented at multiple places so visitors can navigate their way to the island on their own. HISTORY In 1852, Walter Lowe, captain of the schooner Chestnut, anchored off Anclote Key and over several days secured a cargo of sponges. He made such a huge profit that others mirrored his endeavor and the sponge trade was born in Florida. Anclote Key is a pristine slice of the Florida of yesteryear. The word Anclote is a Spanish word meaning anchor. The island is about 180 acres and around four miles long, and almost a mile wide. The key is made up of four islands and continues to grow as sand accumulates along its length. The islands are Anclote Key, North Anclote Bar, South Anclote Bar and Three Rooker Island. Anclote Key is the northernmost island of the 320-mile chain of barrier islands which protect much of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Anclote Key Preserve State park has been preserved in a primitive state. Since it is accessible only by boat and is remote, the island attracts many birds that tend to avoid human contact, making the park a key destination for bird watchers. The park is home to at least 43 species of birds, including the American oystercatcher, bald eagle and piping plover. CAMPING Primitive camping is available on the North end of the island along with picnic pavilions and grills. Visitors must bring water and supplies as there are no provisions on the island. Plenty of sunscreen and bug spray is also recommended. Camping is free but before you go call 727-469-5942 and check in.

Living the Wild Life

Snowbirds

Yes, it’s that time again. The snowbirds are returning to their winter homes here in Florida. Not the two-legged kind, but the two-winged kind. The northern birds are starting to migrate and this is the perfect time to do a little bird watching.

I’ve been bird watching since I was a young child and was suitably nick named “Dorie Bird.” While vacationing at my grandparents, you could always find me up a tree whistling to my feathered friends. They lived next to a bird sanctuary which provided us with a wide variety of species. We would be awakened a half hour before sunrise to fill the feeders and sit quietly as the birds began to sing. It would not be long before they would start to arrive with first light. The early bird did not get worm, but had dibs on the choice seed. It was then that I learned to identify birds not only by sight but by their calls. I did not return to bird watching until I met my husband. Although he was neither a gardener nor a wildlife enthusiast, he found joy in watching me get excited about planting a bird garden. As the birds started showing up, I would explain their behavior and soon it was not just a matter of watching birds eat, but watching birds interact with the environment. If you asked him 20 years ago if he was going to be a bird watcher, he would have sternly said “not in a million years.” Now he cannot image his life without relaxing in the garden and enjoying the many visitors we have to our small, Learn to Tickle the Ivories at Schulz Music Hall but active, wildlife garden. To start you own bird garden, all you need is food, water and shelter. This can be as simple as a flat surface to scatter seed, a shallow container to hold an inch of water and a potted tree or shrub grouped together, or as elaborate as feeding stations, waterfalls and mass plantings of Florida friendly plants and of course anything in between.

Learning to tickle the ivories has never been so much fun!

Having her own piano studio and teaching classes in a group setting is a dream come true for Dr. Angela Miller, owner of Once the birds have found your offerings, which could take a few Schulz Music Hall in New Port Richey. weeks, you will be on their daily route. FootGolf

has Arrived

in Trinity

What do you get when you cross soccer and golf? FootGolf, of course! Following suit with more than 240 courses throughout the United States, FootGolf is the newest rage at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club in Trinity. The object of the game is to kick a #5 regulation soccer ball into 21-inch holes along a 9- or 18-hole course, in the same manner as one would play a standard golf match, only without the clubs. The player using the fewest number of kicks at the end of the game wins. The sport was developed in Belgium in 2006, and it has evolved over the years, gaining in popularity with young people, much like soccer. Since golf can be an expensive sport with which to become involved, FootGolf is an affordable, entertaining alternative, giving golf courses a boost, thanks to an insurgence of young patrons. SSGCC has adapted their 18-hole Challenger course for FootGolfers. Tee times for FootGolf are 11AM u 6PM, and are

available seven days a week. The same rules apply for FootGolf as for traditional golf. You have the option of renting a cart, or walking the course for a nominal fee. Considering FootGolf is usually played with groups of up to four people, it makes a great way to celebrate birthdays, host fundraisers and corporate outings, and compete in league play. FootGolf birthday parties at the club are a unique, entertaining way for your child to celebrate with up to 36 friends! The parties can be scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays after 2:00 PM, and include a complimentary round of golf for the birthday boy or girl, and a complimentary return round of FootGolf for each guest. FootGolf uses golf’s basic model, including tee boxes, greens, bunkers, and water hazards. Scorecards display FootGolf par scores for each hole, as in regular golf. The sport is governed by the Federation for International FootGolf.

Purr - fect Pet Boarding in Pasco Our pets are our family members, and we want them to be healthy, happy and safe, much like our children. Unlike children, however, it’s not always possible or permissible to take them on vacation, or to appointments, or even keep them in our homes when we host special events, or experience hospital stays. Over the last 20 years, Animal Care Center of Pasco, Inc., has expanded to three facilities, including Best Care Animal Hospital and Country Oaks Animal Hospital. Eight veterinarians serve the three offices to expertly manage your pet’s healthcare needs. Thanks to this wonderful network of animal healthcare professionals, you can have peace of mind knowing that your pet has safe places to board, complete with lots of activity, love, and attention from dozens of team members with a sincere passion for animals. Secure cages and runs ensure your fur-baby is in no danger of running away or getting hurt. Trained staff members take dogs on leash walks four to six times per day, meaning your pet will get regular human interaction and proper, supervised exercise while you’re unavailable. The three facilities provide nourishing food and comforting blankets, so your beloved pet will feel right at home!

Plus, one of the great amenities of boarding your pet at ACC, BCAH or COAH, is that he or she will receive a nice bath or grooming before you pick them up to return home. Pet owners must provide proof that all vaccinations are up to date, and pets must have a stool check prior to boarding. The only restriction: aggressive dogs are not accepted for boarding. No other restrictions apply. It matters not what age, size or breed of cat or dog, these three facilities are purr-fect places for your pet to board!
