Thank you for sending out a crew to clean my house last week. Doing my own cleaning was too much of a challenge for me to even try. My energy level has been very low and my IV bag and tubing kept getting in the way. So I was thrilled to have two of your finest clean for me. My bathtub has never been so shiny and my toilet so sparkling! Also, it was great to have my floor mopped and carpets vacuumed since I wasn’t up for that either.

-Thank you so much, Jill P.

Ms. Twister Maid Service gets Your Home or Workplace “Sophia” Clean! We have used Sophia for years. She is very dependable and always does a great job! We know when we walk into the home that it’s not just clean – it’s “Sophia” clean! She pays close attention to detail, always goes above and beyond. We have hired other people in the past, but Sophia is one of the few at the top of the list of our favorites. Her business is trustworthy and we don’t recommend anyone else to our family or friends. — Loriann This is only one testimonial from many, very satisfied residential and commercial customers of Ms. Twister Maid Service, LLC, a division of Team Farrell. With Ms. Twister, you not only get “Sophia” clean, you get the satisfaction of knowing that the money you spend with Ms Twister is being paid forward to help someone in need. “Ms. Twister uses a large portion of our profits to provide free cleaning services for women and men with breast cancer while they are undergoing treatment. This is made possible through Cleaning for a Reason,” explained owner Sophia Anastassiou. Cleaning for a Reason is a nonprofit organization that serves the United States and Canada, with a mission to give the gift of free house cleaning for men and women undergoing treatment for any type of cancer. Their goal is to “let these brave and strong women focus on their health and treatment while partnering maid services focus on removing the worry and the work of cleaning their homes– and it is all free of charge.” Ms. Twister is one of more than 1,200 maid services who donate free housecleaning as part of the Cleaning for a Reason organization. Since their inception in 2006, their partner maid services have volunteered their time to clean for over 21,000 patients, valued at nearly $6 million.* Ms. Twister Maid Services, was established in Port Richey in 2015, which was a dream come true for Sophia, who had been managing her own, smaller maid service. Having a larger team, and the support of Team Farrell and her community, it afforded her the opportunity to help more breast cancer patients during their time of need.

Award Winning Local Attorney

Stacy Kemp

Stacy Kemp is the founder of Kemp, Ruge & Green Law Group and is an award winning attorney and business woman. Attorney Kemp has been selected as one of the “Top Lawyers in Florida” by the Legal Network, and her firm was named “Small Business of the Year” by the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, her firm earned a place in the INC. 5000 for fastest growing privately held companies in the nation for the second year in a row. While this is just a small sample of what she has achieved, the plaques on the wall are not what Attorney Kemp uses to evaluate her success. “It’s nice to win trophies, but I’d rather win clients” is one of several client centered mantras that dictate the inner-workings of her firm. Her business model, though not revolutionary, is implemented effectively and relentlessly. She emphasizes constant client interaction,

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

pleasant conversation and a “can do” attitude to ensure her clients receive the best legal representation possible. Considering her firm’s revenue has grown by over 100% each of the past three years, her approach must be working. However, what truly sets Attorney Kemp apart from her peers is her commitment to the bay area’s community. Since starting her firm in 2008, she has made community involvement as integral to her firm’s business model as she has superior client service. With an ever growing list of sponsorships, charities and benefits, Attorney Kemp aims to support the community that supports her. Perhaps no greater example of her philanthropic nature is her firm’s presenting sponsorship of the Chasco Fiesta (a nine day festival benefiting more than 25 nonprofits locally). The heart of Attorney Kemp’s success lies in the fact that she is from this area and, even as a young child, she has always wanted this area to thrive. She attended River Ridge High School where she was very active in Future Business Leaders of America, as well as a number of other extracurricular activities. Then, she went on to Saint Leo University where she majored in Criminal Justice and earned National Dean’s List recognition multiple times. Finally, staying local once again, Attorney Kemp earned her Juris Doctorate from Stetson University College of Law. While there, she received numerous awards including the prestigious “ William F. Blews Award for outstanding pro bono service” and another series of Dean’s List awards.

The “Coolest” Family in Town!

STORY

Gil & Julie McWilliams, McWilliams & Son Heating, Air Conditioning and Electric If there is one thing certain about living anywhere in Florida during the summer months, it is vital to have a reputable air conditioning company at the ready for all of your air conditioning and ventilation needs. When the professionals of that company are dependable and provide quality service at affordable prices, it is a no-brainer! Gil & Julie McWilliams are the owners of McWilliams & Son Heating, Air Conditioning and Electric, a three-generation, family-owned business in Port Richey, and they deliver all of these things and more for all of their clients. Gil & Julie are well aware of the importance of providing the very best experience for customers each and every time – especially during the intense heat of the season – whether it’s during standard business hours or long after.

Their daughter, Lauren will be attending Mitchell High School this year and regularly attends community events promoting business. Other family members include Uncle Doug Saxon, as Office Manager and cousin, Brandon Saxon, Service Technician. Together, there are 30 employees and 18 trucks. The McWilliams team strives to do their best work day after day, for all things HVAC and electrical, including maintenance, repairs, and air quality. “Gil truly loves what he does and being able to provide a service that is very necessary in Florida is definitely rewarding. He has provided service even when the customer has financial issues. He‘d never let a family do without if he can help,” Julie confessed. Aside from business, the McWilliams’ are active throughout the community, participating in Port Richey Rotary, Trinity Rotary, Phi Delta Kappa, Junior Service League, Trinity Odessa Chamber of Commerce, West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, along with many networking groups like Trinity Business Association, Professional Service Network, and Trinity Referral Network.

In as much as their customers are highly- valued, family means everything to the McWilliams’. Julie continued, “McWilliams and Son is a family business. Everyone is involved one way or another. We spend time together in many ways be it business-related or not. We are together, be it working in the community or on family vacations. The key is involving everyone in all aspects beneficial to the balance of providing harmony. The AC business is not 9-5, and we all know that come summer, our time together may be limited, but come winter, we are out seeing the world… together.” Gil is “The Big Man” makes all things possible. He is hands on in every aspect of the company. Julie handles the marketing, advertising and public relations. The “Son” in McWilliams & Son, Devin, recently returned from active duty in the United States Marine Corp, and he is fully-trained and licensed as an HVAC mechanic. Soon, he will earn his electrical license.

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Julie said, “Through our involvement with these organizations we, collectively, are able to donate large amounts of time and funds back into the community. Together we are mightier than one.” Their commitment to community is as solid as their commitment to their family and their customers. They see the best part about the West Pasco community is meeting other like-minded people who come together to help those in need. Julie confided, “We are very fortunate in our success to be able to give back to the community by donating funds to many non-profit organizations and to help projects go forward that serve a purpose to better the lives of those who need it most.”

Health & FITNESS

Many people who have conventional dentures don’t like to wear them because they don’t stay in place. TeethXpress offers a way to keep dentures secure and allows you to go about your daily life with confidence. Conventional dentures are designed to give you the appearance of natural teeth, but not actually replace your natural teeth. You may have noticed that your denture that once fit well now slips constantly and requires costly visits to the dentist for adjustment. That’s because every day that you were a denture the bone in your jaw shrinks a little more. Eventually the denture won’t fit at all and you will have to replace it. TeethXpress is a very different solution. You will still have beautiful natural looking teeth, but now they will also function like natural teeth. The TeethXpress solution secures your denture to surgically placed dental implants so that you can eat, speak and live confidently without the fear of slipping dentures.

Gym-Free Ways to

Get Fit For celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza, the whole world is a gym Ramona puts her mom, Lucy, 81, to work on a Bosu balance trainer. — Matt Barnes

As a former competitive gymnast and a cheerleader for the L.A. (now Oakland) Raiders — a job that required me to dance in highheeled boots for much of my 20s and 30s — I’m often dealing with a tight lower back, hamstrings and hips. I especially feel this in the morning, so it’s helpful to do stretches while I’m in bed. A few side twists, hamstring stretches and leg circles make it much easier for me to get up. I went to Hollywood to pursue acting. Then I was asked to train Jessica Alba in gymnastics for Dark Angel — and that was the start of my fitness career. Halle Berry often uses my 3-2-1 workout, which includes three cardio segments, two circuit-training segments and one core segment. I’m a total gym rat, but I also love taking my clients outdoors. Changing your environment helps keep you motivated. But you don’t need a trainer to get moving. Here are a few quick exercises to try on the next sunny day. Aquatic abs At the swimming pool, throw in a little abdominal work. Support yourself with the pool’s edge and crunch your legs toward your chest. Step up your health When climbing stairs, boost your stamina — by taking two or three at a time. On a hill, stretch your strides. Reverse course If you have painful knees, try walking backward for a bit on your next stroll. This builds quadriceps strength with less joint stress. Push it When you pass a park bench, stop and do a few leaning push-ups against its back, to strengthen your shoulders and chest. Beach body Sand offers resistance and cushioning. At the shore, try broad jumps or lunges. Los Angeles trainer Ramona Braganza, 54, has sculpted some of Hollywood’s hottest physiques, including Scarlett Johansson’s and Anne Hathaway’s.

Healthy Hair

A healthy diet can help your hair stay strong and shiny. What you eat can also keep you from losing your locks. If you’re not getting certain nutrients from food, you might see the effects in your hair. Essential fatty acids, especially omega-3s, play a key role in the health of your skin, hair, and nails. You should eat some of these foods, which are rich in omega-3, every day: • Salmon, tuna, mackerel, and other fatty fish • Flaxseed oil • Walnuts and almonds Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid are also important to your hair. Vegetarians and vegans often don’t get enough of them. Foods with B-6 include bananas, potatoes (both white and sweet), and spinach. Major sources of B12 include meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. You can get folic acid with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits and tomatoes. Whole grain and fortified-grain products, beans, and lentils also have it. Protein is also critical for keeping your hair healthy, but many people don’t get enough. Lean meats like fish and chicken, eggs, and soy products are good sources. Eat one serving every day. Because trace minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and biotin also affect hair, it’s a good idea to take a daily multivitamin.

Before You Hit the Road

This Summer,

6

Make Sure You Consider These

Summer Car Care Tips By Leah Ingram

1. Keep Tires Inflated Now that you know that hot weather can affect your tire pressure, what can you do about it? Ensure that tires are properly inflated. According to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner’s manual, not the number on the tire. 2. Check Tire Tread Tires with good treads help with safe driving. Try this coin test to see if your tires need replacing or not. Take a penny and insert it upside down along your treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, those treads are dead and you need new tires. 3. Top Off Fluids Make sure that your fluids under the hood are all at optimal levels. Also, if you have a big road trip scheduled, you may want to get an oil change before you leave. Motor oil does more than just lubricate moving parts. It cools areas of the engine and provides protection over a wide temperature range. 4. Read Up on Recalls We just received a letter from Honda, letting us know that our 2003 Honda Accord is a part of the airbag recall that’s been in the news lately. Turns out the driver’s side and passenger side airbags need to be replaced. Other drivers may not be aware that they have a recalled vehicle and that it still needs to be repaired. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN Lookup Tool lets you enter a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to quickly learn if a specific vehicle has not been repaired as part of a safety recall. This tool covers recalls within the last 15 years. 5. Replace Wiper Blades When was the last time you put new wiper blades on your car? If it’s longer than six months, you need new ones. After six months, blades stop working well and could affect your visibility while driving in the rain. 6. Plan for an Emergency No one ever plans to get stuck on the side of the road, but emergencies do happen. Keep a emergency kit in your car; include jumper cables, a flashlight, paper towels, roadside flares, a first-aid kit, bottled water, car charger for cell phone, and even snacks like granola bars, among other necessities you think you might need if you got stranded.

Ready to Sell? 3 Ways to Get Started Now

If you decide to take the plunge and put your home on the market, we’ve got a few things you do right now to get a head start on prepping your home to sell this summer. 1. Hire Your Realtor®. A real estate pro is essential to a successful home sale right from the start. Not only will you rely on their expertise to make the decision to sell, you should also trust their advice on pricing your home, marketing it, and negotiating offers from buyers. 2. Schedule a pre-listing home inspection. Get a head start on other home sellers by getting a home inspection done now—before you list your home. By getting your home inspection early, your home sale is less likely to be derailed by unseen issues with your home when the buyer conducts their own inspection. You’ll have extra time to address any problems your inspection uncovers, or your agent can help you decide if it’s better to adjust your asking price instead.

3. Declutter and stage for buyers. While you’re in home improvement mode, you can also take your time decluttering and staging your home so it makes an unforgettable first impression on buyers. • Begin by cleaning out your closets and packing up photos and knick-knacks. • Make your rooms look more spacious by removing extra furniture and clearing your kitchen countertops. • Create a tidy, welcoming entry and apply a fresh coat of paint inside to help buyers see your home in its best light. • Freshen your décor with new throw pillows, decorative towels, bedding and other accessories.

Contact Debbie Dawson, RE/MAX Champions for more advice about how you can attract buyers by playing up the specific features of your home while staying within your budget.

Cooling Your Home This Summer

• S et your thermostat on the highest comfortable setting. If you’re leaving for the day, turn it up a couple of degrees. Don’t turn your cooling system off unless you’ll be gone for an extended period of time.

• C lean or change your filters monthly. Dirty filters can increase operating costs.

• U se a ceiling fan or portable fan to supplement your air conditioning. A fan can make you feel three to four degrees cooler so you can set your thermostat a few degrees higher and save on cooling costs. Use in occupied rooms since fans cool people, not rooms. • S witch your central air conditioning to “auto” for better cooling and humidity control and costs you less than keeping the system switched “on” continuously. • C lose blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day to keep the sun’s rays from heating your house. • C hoose a high-efficiency AC with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 14 or greater. Not only will your AC be more efficient, you could also be eligible for a rebate up to $350. • C losely monitor older air conditioning equipment – especially temperature settings, hours of operation and filter condition. • Sign up for EnergyWise HomeTM, a free program that can pay you over $147 a year to help manage Florida’s energy use. • P roperly insulate your home. In existing homes, wall insulation may be too expensive to install, so concentrate on attic and floor insulation. www.progress-energy.com

Multifunctional Kitchen

Nothing can kill a sale faster than a dated, closed-in kitchen area. Many of today’s buyers see the kitchen as the home’s command center, and not just a place for cooking and eating. They want the kitchen to be many things at once, hence the rise in popularity of what is known as the multifunctional open-concept kitchen.

The two main considerations when designing a multifunctional space are wall placement and storage. While it may seem like an easy solution to knock down walls, Brick says there are other architectural solutions, like open doorways, that can give a similar effect while keeping the space architecturally interesting.

If your clients are looking to renovate an existing kitchen, or you need to advise them on building one that’s brand-new, the Washington Post shared some background on how they can design a kitchen space so that it’s functional in many different way.

Being as honest as possible about individual organizational and storage needs is key when creating a multifunctional kitchen. For some owners who want to use the kitchen as a makeshift homework area or as a place to handle their bills, adding storage for these needs will be necessary. If your clients do a lot of cooking and entertaining for large groups, they will want to make sure the kitchen has space and storage to accommodate that process. If the family has small children, the kitchen can be designed with their safety in mind.

“Whether you are renovating existing structure or building new, architects fully recognize the need for space that is designed for movement and flow,” says Stephanie Brick, senior designer at Sustainable Design Group, in Gaithersburg, Md. “There are still rules and important elemental guidelines — you do not want to just delete all of the walls on your first floor. But by being selective in the design, materials and professionals you work with, you can easily achieve a space that does not merely react to, but anticipates, your bustling lifestyle.”

24 June Issue 2016

Brick has one final piece of advice when designing this type of kitchen space. “Honesty with your architect is key to creating a strong working relationship and delivering an equally beautiful and functional space in your home.”

Homeowners will value the simplicity of concrete coffee tables and flooring and teak furniture, which can withstand the outdoor elements and transition easily into subsequent seasons. Teak furniture, such as

“Natural wood outdoor furniture will take center stage, but will be modernized by concrete or stainless steel accent materials, which will pop up in anything from chair legs to coffee table tops,” said Kerrie Kelly, Zillow Digs home design expert in a release this morning. The sleek wood and concrete materials will be contrasted with bright aquamarine hues in throw pillows, umbrellas, and other materials. The predicted most-popularstatement color of the summer adds vibrancy and warmth and to any space, and pairs seamlessly with the slate gray

Zillow also noted the out-of-style fads to forget in 2016. Anything high-maintenance or ornate should be ditched for this year’s new trends. Homeowners want a stylish yet comfortable vibe, so wrought iron furniture sets and floral patterns will seem too intricate and overdone, and will be quickly replaced by the above modern furniture and solid, bold colors. Homeowners will also steer clear of lawns that require, year-round attention, and will instead spend their energy creating a comfortable outdoor living space that feels like an extension of their home.

My daughter is about to start college. What does she need to know about opening her first checking account?

Starting out on one’s own in college involves many financial firsts. Opening a checking account to manage money might be just one of them. As your daughter prepares to head off to school, she should begin to shop around and find a bank or credit union that offers the best deal. Many banks (both local and national) and credit unions offer accounts tailored specifically to young adults. Some things she should keep in mind when shopping around include: • Is there a monthly maintenance fee? • Are there overdraft charges? • Does the account pay interest? • Does the account come with free checks? • Is there an ATM on campus or close by? • Are there penalties for using an out-of-network ATM? Many colleges and universities have begun to partner with financial institutions to offer accounts to their students. In fact, 40% of college students attend schools with these types of arrangements. (Source: U.S. Government Accountability Office, College Debit Cards, February 2014) Some colleges may use official communications, such as email, to market a particular financial institution’s products. Others may allow a financial institution’s staff on campus to promote their products. A college or university may even be paid when a student opens a sponsored account. It’s important to note that these sponsored accounts can come with high fees. As a result, you’ll want your daughter to be aware that just because an account is sponsored by her college or university doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option, or even that she has to use it. One resource that clients (and my children) have used in the past is FamZoo. By opening a prepaid card that you control through FamZoo this allows you to teach your daughter to split account balances for spending, saving and giving – and how to budget. Although, it is always better to start this sort of financial education much earlier, even in the elementary school years, it is never too late. You can go to www.famzoo.com to explore this creative and worthwhile option. Call and put our team to work for you!

Appointing a guardian

for your minor children

When one parent dies, the other parent generally gets custody of minor children. But if one parent is unfit, or both parents die, your family and the court will look to your will when deciding who becomes the guardian of your children. Without your wishes in writing, the state will make a decision that’s out of your control. To keep this from happening, it’s a good idea to name your first and second choice for a guardian. Be sure to explain the following: • Why you believe this adult will provide stable, continuous care • The relationship between your child and the adult • The adult(’s) moral fitness to take care of your children Discuss your decision with potential guardians before naming them in your will. And be careful about appointing co-guardians. These work best when you choose a stable couple, but you can’t predict what will happen in the future.

HERO

A Perfect Balance of Love for Family & Community

Kelly Steen

Hero: “A person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a role model or ideal”

Many residents of West Pasco County recognize her name, her face, and her level of service to the community and local businesses therein. But how much do people really know about this special woman who dedicates so much of herself to better her community? Kelly Steen humbly describes herself as “efficient, helpful, and caring.” She definitely embodies all of these admirable qualities, and so many more! Kelly admitted, “When I first started networking, I was very shy and kept to myself. I am the type of person who will go to a new place and observe everyone and everything before I get involved. As I continued to network, I noticed how the people in our community gave back and how people helped each other. I thought this was wonderful and something I wanted to do myself.” Her community was a perfect fit of local business professionals with whom she wanted to interact, encourage and promote. So much so, she continued to get involved with various organizations and decided that it was something she wanted to teach her daughter. “I love helping others and so does she,” Kelly said. When it comes to her beloved daughter Ashlyn, Kelly is even more dedicated to her most important job as Mom. She has served as her daughter’s Girl Scout troop leader for 5 yrs, and she enjoys volunteering at her daughter’s school. Kelly proudly stated, “My family is always my main priority. It is challenging at times to balance work and home, but without my family and God, I would not be where I am today. Watching my daughter grow and become a caring and loving person is so rewarding. I am so proud of her. She is a smart and loving little girl. She teaches me to be a better person. We volunteer every year with The United Way of Pasco County for their Stuff the Bus event, as well as many other organizations’ events. I truly love being a part of her life and volunteering with her.”

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Kelly is also grateful to have her Mom around, because she helps with her granddaughter whenever needed. “I am truly blessed,” she said. We are excited to introduce Kelly as Marketing Director of It’s Your Home Magazine. She is a leader in our community that truly cares about helping others. She is very involved and is now a great asset in further assisting IYH Magazine in our mission to connect our readers to the local businesses in our community. Her mission with IYH is to grow the magazine and give residents/businesses of the community the resources they need. The majority of West Pasco residents don’t know what all Pasco has to offer, because many work and play in other counties. Kelly wants to help change that. Her most helpful hint to residents and local business owners, alike, is something she learned early on: If you don’t know someone, talk to them, and get to know more about their business. She emphasizes that you don’t have to become a patron of a business, necessarily, but you may know someone who can use their products and services. Word of mouth referrals are often the best way to help small businesses. Kelly said, “If you are unsure of how you can get involved, contact me I would love to help you.“ To that end, she continued, “I love being able to connect our businesses with our residents. I think it’s wonderful how It’s Your Home Magazine, a community lifestyle magazine, is geared toward its readers. I hope you will love it too, and if you have any thoughts on how to make the magazine better, or if there is something you would like to see in the magazine, contact me. We want this to be your favorite resource guide.“ Welcome to the IYH &Topaz Digital Ink team, Kelly! We are blessed to have you!!

Credit Mistakes Potential Homebuyers Make Maintaining a strong credit score is one of the most important things potential buyers can do if they want to qualify for a mortgage, since credit scores are used by lenders to measure financial health. A recent study showed that 34 percent of potential buyers believe their current score will hurt their future ability to purchase a home. If your clients are concerned about their current credit rating,

People who hold high credit balances are not looked as favorable loan candidates since high balances and maxed out cards raises the debt-to-income ratio, according to lenders.

• Don’t be late. Paying bills on time is essential, since a person’s payment history makes up 35 percent of the total credit score. A late bill payment of 30 to 60 days also gets reported to credit bureaus and stays on the credit report for a whopping seven years.

• Too much disputing. While it’s a good idea to keep tabs on the credit report and dispute false charges, doing so too-often will be a red flag to lenders who may chalk it up to gaming the score instead.

Yahoo! Finance offered some advice on common credit problems they should avoid.

• Applying for new credit. According the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), applying and being approved for a new line of credit can cause concern with lenders who might take it as a sign that there’s a higher risk of default due to increased spending. Bottom line, if your potential buyers are planning to apply for a home loan in the near future, make sure they don’t apply for anything else around the same time, Yahoo! Finance warns. • Having high balances. Just making minimum credit card payments isn’t good enough for most mortgage companies.

• Not having a credit history at all. Credit can’t be established if there’s none to begin with, so if your clients have a thin credit file, let them know they need to start building their history before applying for a home loan.

Taylor Made to a Tee

Summer Reflections

by Debra Taylor Tee

What’s a vacation? I think it has something to do with not working. I’m not terribly familiar with the concept anymore.

https://keepitlocal-llc.com

I miss the days of young when we were counting the hours until the LAST day of school, be it all Fridays, the eve of Christmas break; the cusp of spring break; the all-important summer break; and the final moments of your last class as a high school or college graduate. Those were the days… Adulting, as I’ve heard it called by friends and associates, is much different today than it was during my youth growing-up in small town Kentucky. Moms stayed home and performed amazing duties, not only as Moms, but as domestic engineers. Dads worked 9-5, and joined the entire family at the dinner table before CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. Life and adulting has changed in many respects from those “good old days.” I wear many hats at this stage in life, and I mean that figuratively. I volunteer as a community liaison for a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue. I am editorial director and head writer for this publication. I write blogs for another local marketing company owned by my mentor and friend, Stacy Hansen. I serve as administrative assistant to a locally-based, point-of-sale [POS] software company; and I am a caregiver to two individuals in their early 80’s. The lady has a terrific mind, works crossword puzzles all day, and frequently repeats the same stories I’ve heard a thousand times about many wonderful times with her late husband and her only son. The gentleman has Alzheimer’s disease and can’t remember the question he asked me two minutes ago. He was once a very hard worker for a natural gas company, and served as chief of the local fire department. Both have long since retired, and both need care 24/7, 365. Neither desires to vacation anymore. It puts things in clarified perspective. I miss the days of being able to surround the family table with my loved ones on a regular basis. I miss the family vacations we took to Steinhatchee and Myrtle Beach, SC. I miss my carefree lifestyle and being able to do my thing…whatever that was…whenever I wanted. However, I’m thankful I have these precious memories upon which to reflect. No matter when I finally get an opportunity to vacation, or “staycation”, as the case may be, I think I’ll remove my adulting hat – and all of the others – and escape to Sun Park West and/or Howard Park. I’ll follow it up with a potent, refreshing beverage at Gil Dawgs, or perhaps, my favorite delicious dinner at Dimitri’s on the Water, paired beautifully with a fabulous merlot or pinot noir, of course. I’ll top it all off with a visit to the water. To me, the Anclote, the bayous, and the gorgeous gulf waters are the most beautiful, spiritual, serene scenes upon which to escape, ponder and reflect…and be thankful I remember. #PrayForOrlando

Dishing Out Health

SKINNY CHICKEN ALFREDO STUFFED SPAGHETTI SQUASH By Jamie Vespa MS, RD, LD/N dishingouthealth.com

Skinny Chicken Alfredo Stuffed Spaghetti Squash is a delicious spin on the beloved Italian staple! This easy recipe is low in calories and high in fiber and protein. Your family will love it! INGREDIENTS • 1 medium-sized spaghetti squash, halved • 1½ cups shredded chicken breasts (rotisserie is great) • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tsp butter (I use grass-fed) • 1 small shallot, minced • 2 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 tbsp flour* • 1½ cup unsweetened cashew milk • 2 cups fresh baby spinach • 3 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • 4 tbsp parmesan cheese - divided • Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Answers from Page 28

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F 2. Use a large knife to cut the spaghetti squash lengthwise from stem to tail. Rub the flesh with olive oil or lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Lightly season with salt and pepper and place the squash halves cut-side down on a baking sheet or roasting pan. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before handling. Turn oven broiler to HIGH. 3. While the squash cools, heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add minced shallot and a pinch of salt and pepper. Saute for ~2-3 minutes, until softened. Next, add butter and garlic and saute until aromatic, ~1 minute. 4. Whisk flour into garlic butter mixture continuously for about 30 seconds until well-combined. Carefully pour in cashew milk and turn heat to high, bringing mixture to a low boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let simmer for ~5 minutes, until mixture starts to slightly thicken. 5. Begin scraping out the seeds of the spaghetti squash and discarding them, and scraping out all the spaghetti-like strands to be incorporated into the mixture. 6. Add shredded chicken and fresh spinach to skillet, stirring frequently until spinach wilts down. Add the squash strands, 2 tbsp parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Mix until well-combined. 7. Fill squash boats with chicken alfredo mixture, dividing evenly amongst each half. Top with remaining parmesan cheese (~1 tbsp per boat). Broil for 6-9 minutes, checking every few minutes, until the cheese is melted and slightly crisp. Top with additional parsley and serve! *To make gluten-free, sub flour for sorghum flour, sweet rice flour or corn starch

& ENTERTAINMENT TIME FOR WINE

A Toast to Summer Fun

There are two major categories of German wine: table wine and “quality” wine. Kabinett - literally “cabinet”, meaning wine of reserve quality to be kept in the vintner’s cabinet. Fully ripened light wines from the main harvest, typically semi-sweet with crisp acidity, but can be dry if designated so.

At Time for Wine, we carry a most amazing Sparkling wine, which is produced by means of a second fermentation. A mixture of sugar and yeast (the tirage) is added to the base wines (the cuvée) so that a second fermentation will occur. The carbon dioxide naturally produced during fermentation remains in the wine and is the source of its characteristic feature, bubbles. Our Biroth Cabinet Sekt is the perfect selection while enjoying some fun in the sun. Combining with the perfect seasonal blueberries, will make for a decadent and delightful beverage for your summer celebration. What better way to relax and enjoy a special celebration, with a Blueberry Champagne Cocktail. All you need is the following: 1 cup water 2 cups sugar 2 tsp. lemon juice 2 cups blueberries plus additional to garnish 1 oz. blueberry syrup (http://www.saucemagazine.com/recipe/790) 3 oz. Biroth Cabinet Sekt First, make blueberry syrup: Combine the water and sugar in a medium-sized pot and stir well. Over medium heat, dissolve the sugar. Add the lemon juice and 2 cups of blueberries. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the fruit breaks down. Double-strain into a clean jar, gently pushing the back of a spoon against the berries to release the juices. Pour 1 ounce of the blueberry syrup* into a Champagne flute and top with the Sekt. Garnish with a blueberry. Your guests will love it!!! Shalyah Fearing, The Voice of Hudson and control my technique as a singer. I learned from Pharrell how to be creative with music and make it my own. From Adam, I learned the greatest lesson of all: ‘perfection is just glorified opinion.’ You can’t possibly please everyone. All you can do is go out on the stage and give your best performance every single time!” That she did until her elimination from the highly-acclaimed televised competition in week six, finishing in seventh place. “Before I appeared on The Voice, I thought that I had learned everything. Then I got (there) and realized how far I was from the finish line. After being on this show, I can now see the finish line. I’m not there yet but I can see it. I’ve learned so much being on this show, and I will take it with me forever,” Shalyah added.

Most of us can only dream of stardom. The process is grueling. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to know the right people who can help along the way, but it is crucial to make the correct decisions to successfully navigate the path required to reach that all important goal. Hudson resident, Shalyah Fearing, 15, recognized all of these things, which is why she is well on her way to becoming a shiny star in the music and entertainment industry! From the age of five, Shalyah has shared her vocal gift with her family, her church and her community. However, thanks to her drive and determination, when she turned 15, she headed north to Atlanta, GA, for an open casting call for NBC’s Emmy award-winning, The Voice. Her decision to take that step resulted in her being chosen to compete alongside 23 talented vocalists, all selected for season ten of the popular show which aired this spring. Each week, Shalyah used the corrective criticism from superstar judges Pharell Williams, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and her own team coach, Adam Levine, to further develop her voice and style.

During the show, Blake told Shalyah, “Your voice is developing before our very eyes. Considering what you’ve been through, you have remained true to your story. Your journey is just now starting for you.” She lives with her parents and seven siblings in Hudson, and they are quite a musical family! Shalyah said, “Life is good. We all love music and play instruments. Four of us are in a rock band we call Fearingstar.” She anticipates the next step in her musical career is to attend a school of arts to learn more about her craft. From then, she hopes to continue singing and writing music to inspire others. Congratulations on your successful ride on The Voice, Shalyah! Your community wishes you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

Following her performance of “The Climb” during week three, on Monday, April 25, Adam praised her efforts: “Love you. You’re amazing. You are the embodiment of that dream. It is unbelievable how you have advanced with your talent. This is an amazing moment and I’m very proud of you!” It is safe to say her family, friends and community are proud of her, as well. Shalyah made many friends through her experience on The Voice, but the most important lessons came from the judges. She said, “I’ve learned from Christina how to use

Capt. Bob’s West Central Florida

Fishing Report Looks like the winds will start to calm down more this week. Finally. So we are going to discuss our offshore quarry this week. Water temps are still cool and the fish are hungry so let’s get to it. I would have to say the most popular offshore species for West Central Florida anglers is Grouper. Known for their tackle testing demeanor and excellent table fair, they always bring a smile to the lucky angler that gets a hookup with one of these beasts. Grouper are considered to be an offshore species but Gag Grouper can actually be caught just about anywhere. However, most near shore Grouper are undersized especially with the new size limit of 24 inches for Gag’s. Larger keeper Grouper on the west coast are generally located from around 9 miles on out on hard rocky bottom. Red Grouper, Scamp and Red Hind are located in even deeper water. Yellow Fin and Snowy are deep drop fishing in around 600 feet of water. We prefer large #8 circle hooks tied on to 5 feet of 150 lb. fluorocarbon leader. Use a 6-ounce weight out to around 45 feet then 8-ounce out to around 120 feet. Main line is usually 80 lb. mono or 100 to 120 lb. Dacron. Numbers, numbers, numbers is what everyone is always asking for. GPS coordinates that can put you on prime Grouper grounds is the main key to success. There are numbers that are public that can be found on some charts or maybe you are lucky enough to no someone with good numbers. Having a GOOD depth recorder is a necessity to find fish and establish tour own set of numbers. If you find fish and you’re not hooking up does not mean they are not there, change baits. You should have frozen pilchards and or sardines on board for when the live bait bite is slow. Another good way to find fish is trolling a stretch 15 in 12 to 25 feet of water and a stretch 30 in 25 to 45 feet. When anchored up bring a Kingfish spinning rig and throw out a live bait for a passing Kingfish. They generally swim above the Grouper. Happy fishing and tight lines. We are booking river and island cruises on the Magic Dolphin Island Adventure this week as well as an Island Adventures on the weekend so call and get ready for a great day in paradise. Living the Wild Life

What’s All the Hooting About? My husband and I enjoy nothing more than sitting in the garden after the sun goes down and listening to the sounds of nature. One sound in particular excites my husband. The hoot of an owl. He takes joy in hooting back to them and sounds so realistic, I have to keep reminding him he doesn’t speak owl and could be saying something he shouldn’t.

The Eastern Screech Owl is the smallest of the Florida owls, maxing out at 10 inches. Rather than the typical “hoo, hoo, hoo” sound that other owls make, the screech owl whinnies and trills. These little guys can be very good to have around as they dine on insects, lizards, mice. They live in all types of wooded habitats including suburban backyards. While they nest in natural tree cavities, they may take up residence if you provide them with a screech owl box. They can be seen roosting throughout the day and are often mistaken for baby Great Horned Owls. Great Horned Owls are one of the most common of the Florida owls but there is nothing common about them. With a voracious appetite, they will eat anything from small fish and frogs to larger mammals such as rabbits and opossums. They even prey on large birds and other owls. They are the largest of the Florida owls measuring up to 25 inches for a mature adult and sport horn like feather tufts called plumicorns on their head. For such a large bird, the Great Horned Owl has a weak voice. Its call is a “hoo-hoo-hoowha” and is much quieter than the smaller Barred Owl. The Barred Owl is related to the Great Horned Owl but you can’t miss their powerful voice with a “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” call. Just slightly smaller than their relative, they measure between 18 and 24 inches. They get their name from the distinctive feather pattern which is barred colors of alternating white and brown. Not only active a night, the Barred Owl hunts for small mammals around forest edges such as open fields and pastures. One thing these three owls have in common is they need mature trees and fields. It is important the we continue to maintain conservation areas for them to live and hunt as they are very territorial. They call out telling other males this is their home! They also use calls to communicate with their mate and their owlets. There is just something magical when you hear an owl “Hoot” and that’s what all the hooting is about. To listen to clips of these three owls and other Florida birds visit: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/birds/ florida-bird-sounds/ Doreen Damm
