Hometown STORY

Debora Diaz, Passionate about LIFE & Law Walk into her law office, and you immediately notice soothing aromas of doTerra essential oils, as her passion for LIFE and law extends to include her passion for alternative paths to health and wellness.

Attorney Debora Diaz admittedly “works hard and plays hard,” but she loves to spend down time on the water in the Florida sunshine, often venturing out solo on her jet-ski after a busy day at her practice in New Port Richey. The native of Rochester, NY, admits, “I am passionate about LIFE, enjoying the simple things, but also making memories. I love the ocean and sunshine!” Debora understands about life being short, and she strives to do everything she can to live her life to the fullest each day, and provide effective legal counsel to empower her clients and bring peace to their lives. She freely admits, “I am passionate about life, the law, health and wellness. I want to make a difference! Debora studied industrial and labor relations at Cornell University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She went on to Syracuse University to attain her law degree. Since her admittance to the bar in 1995, Debora has successfully exercised her legal prowess for more than 20 years. Her law practice focuses on family & business matters such as pre-/post-nuptial agreements, divorce, paternity, parenting plans, child support, non-traditional family law matters, and those of same-sex couples. Additionally, Debora tackles issues involving small businesses, non-competes, employee handbooks and policies, and administrative licensing. “My practice is based on honesty, integrity and customer service at all times. Every day is different for me, but I love the satisfaction my clients receive and the problem-solving aspect of my cases,” Debora said.

Her friends and colleagues describe Debora as generous but cautious, strong, and an independent professional who is organized and to the point. Other adjectives used when discussing Debora’s attributes include industrious, reliable, dependable, goal-driven, and “a good Samaritan to our community”. “I am involved in several organizations, and I enjoy each of them,” she confesses. Debora is a member of the West Pasco Bar Association, Clearwater Bar Association, Rotary Club of Holiday, Working Women of Tampa Bay [WWOTB], Woman In Networking [WIN], Women Helping Women, Keep It Local, LLC, and Pasco Cash Mob. She also serves as a director and charter advisor member of Trinity Odessa Chamber of Commerce, and she sits on the board of directors of the Connections Job Development Program. Although she resides in Pinellas County, Debora truly believes in giving back to the community where she devotes the majority of her time practicing law. She said, “I go to local restaurants, shop our small businesses and seek professional services locally. I regularly donate to different non-profit organizations in our community, because life is about helping others and hopefully, leaving the world a better place. I try to live by the motto be kind.”

Unfortunately, one very important family case fell completely out of her hands.

Debora enjoys sharing her life with significant other, Jeff, who she strongly believes was heaven-sent from her late husband. The couple enjoys spending time together, boating, jet-skiing, traveling, and capturing life’s special moments through photography, her latest hobby.

After celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary July 11, 2007, Debora lost her husband, Bob Brenhoch, the following November to a massive heart attack. It was a life-changing event for her, shifting her perspective and heightening her passion for health, wellness and LIFE… in all CAPS! www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Debora shared, “My life and work experiences have molded me into the person I am today, and they help me resolve conflict. We have all had sad or painful experiences in our life. However, like they say the storms don’t last forever, and after the storms, there comes sunshine!” 9

Butterfly Gardening for Kids by Doreen Damm

The green world around us is a magical place. Plants grow from tiny seeds, caterpillars change into butterflies and animals live their lives without regard for us. So how do you get children interested in planting and tending a garden at home? Plant a butterfly garden! The most recognized and easy to attract is the Monarch Butterfly. Vibrant orange and black wings that look like panes of stained glass are sure to please. They lay their eggs under the leaves of Milkweed plants. You don’t have to plant native Milkweed, the Mexican Milkweed is suited for Florida’s heat and readily available at your local garden center. Milkweed is the main food source for the hungry caterpillar that is going to hatch from that egg. They will eat the stems bare, but the plant will quickly recover sending out new blooms and leaves for the next generation. Plant them mixed in with other nectar producing plants to disguise the stems in the interim.

Kids can have fun checking their caterpillars’ movements daily. Once the caterpillar has fattened up, it will climb to a spot where it will hang upside down until it becomes a Chrysalis. At this point you can just observe, but to keep the young ones interested you may want to bring it inside a safe house. The chrysalis will turn dark and transparent just before hatching. While the newly hatched butterfly’s wings are preparing for flight they are very docile and will happily rest on your hand, just be sure not to touch the wings. Kids thrill at the chance to hold a butterfly and will want to attract even more. Taylor Made to a Tee – Live, Laugh, Love…While You Can

This issue celebrates family, and I originally planned to share humorous anecdotes from our annual family gathering for the Kentucky Derby, or as I call it, “The Derby Day Nash Bash,” held at my cousins’ home the first Saturday in May. Our beloved cousin, Jeff Nash, serves as “bookie,” and we legally place bets on the day’s races. There are spreadsheets, jackpots, mint juleps, jocularity, delicious food, and great family-friend fellowship! Mike and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and came away only $10 down for the day – what I would call a successful Derby! Additionally, I thought I would include details of the surprise my sister and I concocted for our Mom on Mother’s Day. My nephews had baseball games, my husband was on-call, my brother-in-law had to sleep before his next 3rd shift, so Dana & I got creative! She picked up Mom’s favorite, yellow roses, I prepared her choice meal, bought her best-loved cake and candy, and we surprised her with an early picnic lunch. She did not expect anything, which made it a short but sweet, extra-special Mother’s Day! On the Wednesday following, before the warm, fuzzy, family feeling had faded, I learned that a dear college friend lost her youngest daughter in an auto accident near our alma mater. I felt like I had been punched in the gut. My heart was broken, and I ached for my friend in her profound loss. My heart still aches as I prepare to attend services for her daughter. I can’t help but reflect on the many precious moments spent with my best friends in college and my own beloved family, even the abbreviated celebrations, like Mother’s Day, cut short by ballgames, work and life. Little did my friend know, this would be her final Mother’s Day with her 20 year-old daughter, an aspiring nurse. I can only imagine the void she must feel in her heart right now, only days after they celebrated together – her daughter’s life cut way too short. Cherish every moment you have with your loved ones. You never know when it will be your last. RIP, Sweet Alyssa. 12 Family Issue 2015

genealogy A Recorded History Of A Person’s Family by Cammy Vaughn We have all heard family stories of a famous or notorious relative that is handed down from our parents and grandparents. As an amateur genealogist your task will be to piece together your ancestor’s lives separating fact from fiction. It is important to work backward in time and be aware of what was happening in the United States and abroad at the time in which they lived. Begin your quest with yourself and your parents. Then work with the four generations of your grandparents. Record everything you know about each person. Now comes the detective in you. You must piece together clues and information that you have working from the known to the unknown. Once your first four generations are complete, increase the number of generations by one. With so much information on line now, you can do a lot of research on the computer from the comfort of your home. A few of the many genealogical software sites that you can 16 Family Issue 2015

explore and build your family tree are: www.familysearch. org, www.ancestry.com, www.rootsmagic.com, www legacy.com, and more. These various software sites hold a wealth of information including on-line training videos and webinars. These can be viewed at your convenience. Also, the local West Pasco County Genealogical Society offers informative seminars that are held monthly. Some important documents to search are: birth, marriage, and death certificates, census, military, cemetery, land and probate records, wills, etc. Enjoy the journey and discover “Who Your Ancestors Were and Where They Came From.” for more information about West Pasco genealogical society visit: www.wpcgs.com For Ad Info Call 727-709-9541

She said, “It is all about balance. If you don’t keep balance in your life, then you are not at your best for anyone – in the office or out. Tidying Up Can Result in Life-Changing Magic!

Organizing phenom Marie Kondo promises big results — if you embrace enormous changes and tough choices. After nearly a lifetime of practice, the Tokyo-based Kondo has developed what she calls the KonMari Method. There are two key tenets: Keep only what inspires joy in your heart and organize by category, not spaces. That may be the first bit of advice, but there’s much more, in fact — 216 pages’ worth in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing

Tidying Step by Step

1. Think of what is your ideal life. In other words, how do you want to live? 2. Gather items by categories not room and group them together. She suggests starting with clothes first, then books and then documents. 3. Ask yourself, do these things spark joy? “Take and touch each item, one at a time with your hands and feel if it sparks joy in you or not,” she says. 4. Sort all goods you plan to keep and put them in their proper location after determining the place where each item should be.

ARE YOU DROWNING 18 Family Issue 2015

Seems too easy, right? According to Kondo, what makes the method more difficult is the fact that many of us imbue our things with emotions. We hang on to items we don’t like because they were gifts; we allow books and papers to pile up in anticipation of reading them later; we refuse to let go of regrettable purchases because of the money we spent on them. “The purpose of the KonMari Method is to sharpen the sense of judgment of what items are important to oneself,” she says. This is where the difficult part comes in, and Kondo has a simple remedy. In the words of Queen Elsa in Frozen, “Let it go.” Read more at: www.houzz.com/ideabooks/46893825?utm_source=Houzz&utm_ campaign=u1213&utm_medium=email&utm_content=gallery1

Now Selling in Starkey Ranch Imagine a community where the beauty of natural Florida meets eight hundred acres of parks, green spaces and twenty miles of trails. Imagine your family enjoying a movie in the park, sitting under the trees and enjoying the night. Imagine running and playing with the dog in one of two great dog parks. You can stop imagining and make this your reality at the new master-planned community of Starkey Ranch, located along SR 54 on the Trinity Odessa border. Neighborhoods will be centered on parks and interconnected trails where neighbors can meet, engage in activities, celebrate moments or just unwind. With a community K-8 school, an expansive district park for athletic activities and recreation, and an abundance of nearby places to shop and dine, residents will find everything they need just minutes away. Starkey Ranch District Park On December 17, 2013, the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners, District School Board of Pasco County, Pasco County Parks and Recreation, and Wheelock Communities approved an innovative public-public-private partnership (P4) that, in its scope, is unique in Florida and possibly the United States. Under the agreement, the partners will design, construct, operate and maintain for joint use a park, school, library and theater within Starkey Ranch. Turn Your Family Room into a Movie Theater

For the movie aficionado, there’s nothing like a home theater but most of us do not have a dedicated room just for movie night. You can create a quality movie-watching experience right in your family room. Decorate Around Your TV Just because your TV is the main feature of your home theater doesn’t mean it has to constantly take center stage. Consider placing it in a unit or console, allowing you to hide it behind closed doors when not in use. Flat screens can elegantly blend into surroundings. Hang it among other wall art or amid bookshelves that span the wall. Or consider placing it above your fireplace.

Don’t Forget the Refreshments Incorporate furniture into your family room that can double as a platform for concessions. A low coffee table that elegantly displays books by day can be ideal for that big bowl of popcorn and gummies during show time. Mix dinner and a movie by using the coffee table or long side table as a buffet. Smaller end tables allow a place for guests to set their drinks or treats, lessening the likelihood that something will get knocked over.

Get the Seating Right With your TV place, arrange the family room to create views from any seat. The main seating area, such as a couch or sectional, should face the screen to give the room balance and provide for optimal viewing. Consider how your other furniture can easily transition from family room positioning to movie-watching mode. Where a pair of reading chairs are best positioned facing the couch to create a gathering area, these chairs can be rotated to give a front-row view of the film.

Do a Sound Check While wireless technology still isn’t perfect, movies from your TV can be piped throughout the room without the hassle of extra cords. Even if you’re not ready for wireless, you can add speakers on the opposite side of the family room from your screen, imitating a theater’s balanced sound. Disguise the speakers by embedding them between books and sculptures on a bookshelf, or place them behind the door of a built-in cabinet or end table and open the door for show time.

Be a Champion for a Kid... Be a Foster Parent Getting the Most from Your West Pasco Chamber of Commerce Want to know an easy, affordable way to grow your business? I will share this secret with you: Join your local West Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Indeed, the Chamber of Commerce can be one of the best friends your small business can have. Think about it: The whole purpose behind a Chamber of Commerce is to help small businesses succeed. Indeed, over 85% of U.S. Chamber members are small business owners. And what kind of business are you involved in? Right, a small business. The West Pasco Chamber is a place committed to your success. At your local Chamber, will find a host of programs and resources intended to make your life easier and your business more profitable. And considering that most small businesses are out there all alone, having a network of like-minded entrepreneurs on your side can really be nice. Let’s consider the various ways a Chamber of Commerce can help a small business:

Imagine being taken away from your home, not knowing where you will go, leaving behind your favorite things. Now, imagine this through the eyes of a child. Approximately 100 Pasco children currently find themselves in homes outside of Pasco due to the current lack of needed Foster Homes within the county. Many of these children will need to live in a temporary foster home, but we simply cannot meet our growing need without your help. When you open your heart and home to foster children, you open the possibilities for them...you foster hope. What does it take? You need to be at least 21 years old, have appropriate housing and be able to pass a background screening. You will need to complete a home study and 24-hours of special training called Professional Parenting. You must have adequate space and be able to provide for your family now—although you will receive financial assistance to help care for the child, you cannot rely on this to pay your bills. To be a foster parent, you can be single or married—have a family of your own or be an “empty-nester”. For more information on becoming a foster parent, please call the Eckerd Recruitment Line tollfree at: 1-866-233-0790. Eckerd Community Alternatives: www.eckerd.org

1. Programming: The programming done by Chambers is intended to help their members grow their businesses. Chambers bring in speakers, offer educational seminars, create informational newsletters, host luncheons, spotlight successful members, facilitate small business counseling, supply relevant demographic materials, sponsor business expos, and offer a variety of other programs intended to help grow members’ businesses. 2. networking: As indicated, one issue many small business owners have is that they are out there on their own, without a whole lot of support from anyone else. But if you join your local Chamber, that will change in two significant ways. • First, you will suddenly be mixing with a host of like-minded people. • Second, Chambers of Commerce regularly have mixers, offering you the chance to meet and do business with your fellow Chamber members. 3. getting involved: Chambers always have a variety of committees that allow you to participate in your community on issues of importance to you. By joining one of these committees, you can make a difference and have your voice heard. 4. discounts: Chambers offer their members discounts and deals with other members. So yes, joining the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce is a very good idea. Visit www.WestPasco.com for more community information.

Business & FINANCE

It seems that the local small business world is gaining confidence again now after the “Great Recession.” This year at Unbehagen Advisors, in our tax and small business monthly accounting/bookkeeping and payroll divisions, we have been meeting with many new entrepreneurs that are considering venturing out on their own to start a new business. It feels like 2006 all over again… well, almost! Among other topics, they ask us many questions about what type of entity to form for their new business venture. Sure, other popular questions include, “What can I deduct? How do I pay my employees and independent contractors? What kind of insurance do I need?” - among others. Yet, the main question that they initially ask is, “Should my business be a Sole Proprietor, a LLC, a C Corporation or taxed as a S Corporation?” Answering this question requires an individualized approach to each client. There are many complex issues to consider when forming a small business entity, but with careful consideration it can make a dramatic difference in both legal protection and how much tax that the entity will owe on its income. Just by selecting a certain entity, legally, a small business can pay less tax than others on its income! However, the entity and owners must play by the IRS rules set forth to do so, and this must be explained clearly to them.

“HEART”

Business & FINANCE

Family | Home | Community By Barbara Marville Kelly “Heart” is where the home is, and Home is where the “Heart” is! Our lives are centered around this concept, easy to grasp and live on a daily basis. This is why we love “It’s Your Home Magazine” and the deep relationship it builds between our families and our community. As we become more engaged in community, we discover how it enhances our lives and reinforces business-building opportunities, as well as relationship-building possibilities, between new friends and acquaintances, resulting in a wonderful sense of accomplishment when it comes to giving back! It starts at home and is built on a strong foundation of LOVE, understanding, and respect for our family members. Building deeper relationships from a “heart-centered” place allows us to become more in-tune with ourselves, thus being able to reach out to others. Making decisions from our heart, rather than our head, helps us to develop a state of “heart coherence”. This allows us more meaningful moments and richness in all areas of our life experience, including deeper “heart” connections with people we know, and of life, in general. Science has shown proof that “heart coherence” benefits not only our own well-being, but also those around us. “Heart coherence” is a mental and emotional state. We can experience the state of being in-sync when the heart, brain, and nervous system work more harmoniously and efficiently. “Heart coherence” can change everything with a simple exercise of “self-mastery” of the inner game of becoming one’s “best self ”, which, in turn, makes for a better world. Begin with a few moments of quiet. Be totally present. Take a few deep breaths, and allow yourself to feel appreciation, gratitude and love. You will then understand why “Heart” is where the home is, and Home is where the “Heart” is! By Defy Aging, Inc. Business & FINANCE

Here are just

4

reasons to get you thinking

1) To decide who receives your assets

Whether it’s a family heirloom, a classic Corvette, or your savings, you should decide who receives your belongings after you die. Generic State rules might not meet your wishes and never include provisions for those not related to you, like close friends or mentors. Make sure your loved ones get the assets you want them to receive.

2) To provide for a favorite charity

Wills don’t have to be just for friends, family, and loved ones. Including a charity in your Will is a great way to give back and make sure your assets are used for a good cause.

3) To appoint a guardian for your children

No one knows their children better than a parent and, if you pass away without a Last Will and Testament, the State will decide who should care for them. You can choose a guardian for your children in your Will and make sure they’re looked after by someone you love and trust.

4) To make a difficult time less difficult

Losing someone is incredibly hard, and the last thing any of us want to do is spend those hard times haggling with lawyers and family members. Making a Will keeps your loved ones from having to deal with bureaucracy in a time of sadness.

June 5 | National Doughnut Day Always the first Friday in June, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression, and to honor the work of World War I Salvation Army volunteers who prepared doughnuts and other foods for thousands of soldiers. June 5 | National Gardening Exercise Day Intended to recognize the important physical health benefits of gardening. It’s good for the mind, body and soul. Take this opportunity to go out and burn off calories and have fun doing it. June 10 | National Iced Tea Day In 1904, English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World Fair. It was a sizzler of a day, and fair visitors needed something cold to quench their thirst. He dumped some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. This was the first known use of iced tea. June 24 | National Catfish Day We’re not making this up. On June 25, 1987, President Ronald Reagan began a presidential proclamation with the words “More and more Americans are discovering a uniquely American food delicacy the farm-raised catfish.” June 26 | Take Your Dog to Work Day Always the Friday after Father’s Day, is a very special day for you and your dog was created in 1999 by Pet Sitters International. It was created to recognize dogs as great companions, and to encourage adoptions of dogs. Of course, make sure your boss will allow it before you show up with your four-legged friend.

Chef Du Jour Scott Cochrane

For the Love of Lonzalo’s Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times! That’s the familiar slogan put in place by Chef Scott Cochrane, owner of Lonzalo’s Pizzeria and Ristorante in Longleaf. Chef Scott opened Lonzalo’s on Valentine’s Day 2009. His love of all foods Italian was translated into a lovely Italian bistro, perfectly suited for families and friends to gather for fun and fellowship over flavorful cuisine! “My favorite things about this community are the people I’ve met and the good friends I have made through the restaurant,” Chef Scott confessed. You might picture the namesake of this fine Italian restaurant, Lonzalo, as a robust Italian chef tossing rounds of pizza dough in the air repeatedly, with a twinkle in his eye and smile on his face. Rather, Lonzalo’s was actually named for a former local ranch foreman named Lonnie Lonzalo Cannon. He was a long-time ranch hand for JB Starkey, Sr., and JB Starkey, Jr. Today, he is 95 years old and resides in northern Florida. The local connection is very important to Chef Scott, who insists on buying quality food products from local suppliers. “We buy from local food distributors, mainly American Foods. Our suppliers are chosen by quality first, then by price. We do not sacrifice quality over cost at Lonzalo’s,” he explains. Using these quality ingredients, every succulent Italian preparation is made fresh every day! You can find all of the family favorites on the Lonzalo’s menu: salads, pastas, specialties, and of course, pizza! Chef Scott serves up an incredibly thin crust cheese pizza, his favorite dish to prepare. However, if you prefer a hand-tossed crust or a deep dish loaded with your fave usual suspects, there’s no better choice than Lonzalo’s!

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Although the super thin crust cheese pie is his favorite to prepare, the dish he considers his most delicious creation is the “Zuppa Di Pesce”, a succulent seafood medley of shrimp, scallops, scungilli, mussels and clams, sautéed to perfection in your choice of a garlic white wine sauce or home-style marinara. Chef Scott and his talented staff proudly present “Brain Teaser Trivia” on Tuesday nights at Lonzalo’s, beginning at 7:00. It’s family-friendly and free to enter, with the top three teams walking away with cash prizes! Feel like belting out a classic? You are invited to join host Allen “Hudson” Brady for “Hump Day Karaoke”, Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. If you are planning a graduation party, a family reunion, or practically any event this summer, Lonzalo’s is quickly becoming the go-to caterer in West Pasco County. Call Chef Scott and his catering team to discuss the numerous options available to meet and exceed your expectations! He and his staff will happily work with you on the menu of your choice, be it Italian or not. Chef Scott welcomes families to his restaurant in true Italian style, to enjoy delicious, quality food, superior service and a fun, casual atmosphere. His goal is simple: “We want our guests to feel they received courteous, prompt service and the best quality food, all while having a good time.” Good Food, Good Friends, Good Times!

Love Lonzalo’s!
