Partners in Crime and Life
It takes a special breed of human to put his-or herself in harm’s way to protect and serve their community. Moreover, it takes a special breed of canine to successfully master the art of tracking criminals, bombs and missing persons. When the two come together as a united front, it becomes an unstoppable, award-winning team of professional crime-fighters and life-savers. Deputy Joe Liddick joined the Pasco Sheriff ’s Office in 1996 and became a member of the K-9 Unit in 2000. Joe partnered with Ace when he was an 8-month-old puppy, and after a few months of specialized training, they hit the streets and have performed as one of those heroic teams since. To date, this K-9 team has successfully tracked and located 275 people, and they hold the record for the most catches in a single year at 75. “Ace is a great dog to have as a partner. At home, he is a regular dog who likes to play with kids and other animals, but when I put on my uniform, he is ready to go to work. He is a tracking machine and can catch a scent from a mile away. Once he has caught the scent, nothing can stop him,” Officer Liddick boasts.

“This job is very dangerous, but it is also very exciting and very rewarding,” Officer Liddick admits. ““It’s great to get to work with Ace. Every day at work for him is like play. He thinks it is one big game. He is great at tracking people and loves what he does. He makes me look good!” The Liddick family recently celebrated their beloved Ace’s 8th birthday party with hamburgers served up at local restaurant, and no canine deserved it more! Criminals emit a scent of adrenaline when they are fleeing from police. They will often make a futile attempt to hide wherever they think law enforcement won’t find them. When a K-9 team like Deputy Liddick and Officer Ace join a search, even a perpetrator hidden in a murky, gator-infested swamp won’t escape arrest. However, it is not always criminals that need to be found. For example, a gentleman with a medical condition went missing for several hours in a heavily-wooded area while searching for his downed remote-controlled plane. In the midst of a diabetic episode, the man was tracked by K-9 Ace, and medical attention was summoned by Officer Liddick, saving the man’s life. Thanks to their numerous, valiant, crime-stopping, lifesaving efforts, Deputy Liddick and K-9 Officer Ace gained recognition from their peers last March, when they were awarded the 2015 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year and K-9 of the Year honors. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Jack Mariano, Pasco County Commissioner The Rise of SunWest Park
He was not expected to win the Pasco County Commissioner’s race in 2004, but Jack Mariano edged out incumbent Peter Altman in a narrow victory, and he has embraced the position ever since. Handling such major matters as transportation, economic development, parks, and zoning, Jack also oversees final budget approvals as the head of the legislative body of the Pasco community. Ten years prior, Jack and his wife Michelle migrated to West Tampa Bay from Boston, MA. They landed in Hudson and raised two daughters, Amber, 19, and Lauren, 18. Both girls were enrolled in the Pasco County school system, and that’s where Jack’s political aspirations began. Although, his initial bid for election to the Pasco County School Board was unsuccessful, he discerned the stumble as “divine intervention”, and made the decision to take a different course by joining Leadership Pasco and becoming educated about county government. This is what ultimately inspired him to run for the Commissioner’s seat. Jack has said, “I will approach every situation as an opportunity, not a problem,” which is exactly the optimism constituents should expect from their hard-working, community servant. One of the biggest projects Jack has fought long and hard to see come to fruition, is SunWest Park in Hudson. Shortly after Jack was elected, Gary Grubbs, mining operator with SunWest Mines, shared some vital information that would prove incredibly beneficial to Pasco County.

Cave divers will enjoy the Jewel of SunWest, a 300-ft-deep cavern, perfect for underwater exploration. Additionally, a second 25-acre, deep water lake provides snorkelers and scuba divers a captivating experience. Coming attractions include an amphitheater overlooking the bay; a ropes course; zip-lines; water trampolines; and large water inflatables for kids. In addition, Jack is excited about the state-of-the-art wakeboard facility Patrick Panakos, operator of SunWest Park, is creating. He said, “This will be the best wakeboard park in the world. We are aligning ourselves to be the most unique destination that cannot be copied anywhere!” Furthermore, SunWest Park would not have opened July 4th, without the investments of time, talents and money by five key individuals: Gary; Charlie Grant of CLC Trucking; Roberto Saez, project manager; landscaper, Tom Giroud; and citizen, Larry Derringer. “Gary agreed to do the beach scraping and covered the $2 million cost.” Jack said, “He hung in there in spite of all the setbacks and delays. Last May, bids were coming in $4 million too high. Gary and Charlie stepped up, and together, the duo saved Pasco more than $4 million on earth removal and beach scraping.” Jack continued, “Tom crafted the one-of-a-kind intricate, lime rock wall and highlighted it with a huge Pygmy palm tree grouping that had been waiting for its perfect spot for 25 years! Also, Larry Derringer of New Port Richey, performed research and helped procure the best sand at a significant savings. Without his efforts and the diligence of Roberto, we would not have gotten this project to completion or open when we did. The amazing quality of the final product was due to the tremendous community of supporters and volunteers!” Jack extends a cordial invitation to everyone to visit and enjoy SunWest Park, open daily from noon to 9 p.m.
Gary introduced him to an old, barge canal, channeling threequarters of a mile directly to the Gulf. Amazed by its beauty, proximity to the Gulf, and the 175 acres of Caribbean-blue water, Jack’s wheels started turning as to how to develop this gorgeous, county-owned site to benefit his community. The entire property was originally donated to Pasco in 1986, but was closed in 1987, when someone drowned. It has been sitting idle until now. After many phases of development – at times amidst controversy – this former lime rock mine is now SunWest Park, in the heart of Pasco County! Slated to be Florida’s next most popular tourist attraction, SunWest Park currently offers visitors “whiter-thanPensacola” sand beaches that border a 75-acre freshwater lake, as well as professional grade sand volleyball courts.

Those Rascally Raccoons Well nicknamed the masked bandits of the campground, they have slowly become a regular sight in our neighborhoods as more of them lose their natural habitat and resort to the free lunch inside our trash cans. My mother-in-law tells a story of camping in Hillsborough State Park when my husband was a young boy, recalling how their campsite was raided by these cute little mammals. It seems they had a craving for Italian food and helped themselves to a spaghetti dinner. I also have memories of a raccoon covert op on our bait bucket, tell-tale signs of wet paw prints surrounding what was to be bait for our day of fishing along the banks of the river. Even now, in my wildlife garden, a heavy duty metal tool cabinet meant to keep the squirrels from chewing their way into the birdseed has become a favorite target. These clever guys have figured out how to pull on the door to bend the metal braces back past the lock. I only wish I had a night camera to catch them running away with the seed container tucked under one arm. Needless to say, living adjacent to conservation land, we have never had problems with raccoons. They have become more accustomed to being out during the day as they learn to live in our human habitats. This is not a sign that they are rabid, just that they want a snack. It is always best not to feed them intentionally. Never put human food in bird feeders. Feed your pets indoors and keep lids secure on trash cans. Be aware of the signs of rabies and never try to approach, tame or feed them by hand. It has been a true delight to watch the many raccoon families visiting our garden. By following safe, observe-only guidelines you too can see past their criminal mischief and enjoy the occasional visit to your garden.

minimalist - Even if Only for a Week

Ever wonder why you completely relax when you stay in a hotel or rent a vacation home? Look around, there is no stuff cluttering your retreat. Nothing to prompt you to do your normal routine of chores, cleaning and those never ending to do lists. It is just the essentials in each room leaving your mind to relax and take in the good life. Well you can have that at home too. Just before you go on vacation, instead of packing the essentials for your trip, pack everything but your essentials. Put away all the little décor items that remind you to dust. Store all those kitchen gadgets and just leave out the coffee pot. Declutter table tops and even put extra furniture pieces in the garage for the time being. If your space is clear and only what you absolutely need to sit, eat, and sleep are left, you are free to relax and enjoy that dream vacation from the comfort of your very own home. Here are a couple of tips to help you go “Minimalist” • The largest things in any room are the furniture. Determine which pieces can be eliminated without sacrificing comfort and livability, the fewer pieces the better. Clear the floors of non-essential items. • Do the same thing with all flat surfaces. Clear them off leaving only one or two items. Everything you need should be out of sight, in drawers or cabinets. This also applies to wall art. Keep it simple with just a couple meaningful pieces. • Your room should be mostly subdued colors using your accent pieces to add a splash of bright color and interest. • Don’t forget your outdoor room. A few quality pieces of patio furniture with bright, solid colored cushions can give you that resort feel. Condense all those potted plants into just one or two large container gardens. A minimalist home is very calming. The fewer items, the less visual stress we have. You will find it more appealing, even if only subconsciously. Try out this new look in your home this stay-cation. Who knows, you might like it enough to keep it all year.

After many years in the television business, including the present, we have used this metaphor of “Lights Camera Action” to take a snapshot of our present moments and life experiences, in order to evaluate our path and direction. “Are you camera ready to show up in life?” Camera ready in television is when you are ready to go live “on air!” There is such a profound similarity to showing up in life, as “camera ready!” As a former HSN Professional TV Host for 15 years, now with Tampa Bay Multi Media starting over once again in my life, the above questions brought me to the metaphor of “Lights Camera Action!” I coached my own way to be of service to others. Lights: Shine the light on YOU! Camera: Look at yourself as if you are observing yourself thru a lens, ACTION: After looking and observing, what do you see? Only two emotions, comfort or discomfort. Many families choose to travel on vacations, while others make plans closer to home and staycation in an effort to stretch thin budgets. For staycationers like me, West Tampa Bay is rich with events and activities for people of all ages! Here are a few of my favorite pastimes that are great ways to pass the time during the long days and short nights of summer: Now that SunWest Park is open, you’ll frequently find me there. Soft, white sandy beaches are beautiful against the blue water of the lakes. Relaxing by the water at a brand new venue is just what the doctor ordered!

I’m headed to the Trop for a Tampa Bay Rays fix! Attending a baseball game in person is so much more fun and exciting than watching it on TV. When the Rays are on the road, I do enjoy going to Fiddlers Green in Trinity to catch the game. Great food, great friends and great fun are on my agenda! I highly recommend a visit to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. Night in the Islands gives me the opportunity to be Greek, if only for a night! Plus, Dimitri’s on the Water has some of the best Greek cuisine on the Docks! Wine Walk! Wine Walk! That, too, is held at the Sponge Docks, but also, downtown Tarpon Springs. As much as I love wine, that’s a must-do! Thursday evenings are always the Sunset Beach Concert Series in Tarpon. You can never go wrong with a concert on the beach! These are just a few of my faves, and my staycation schedule is filling up fast! At this rate, I’ll be stacationing the rest of the season! I’d better get busy…

IRS Reminds Taxpayers to Safeguard their Tax Records as the Beginning of Hurricane Season Approaches WASHINGTON – Hurricane season is here and the IRS advises individuals and businesses to safeguard their records against natural disasters by taking a few simple steps. Create an Electronic Additional Set of Records Taxpayers should keep a duplicate set of records including bank statements, tax returns, identifications and insurance policies in a safe place such as a waterproof container, and away from the original set. Keeping an additional set of records is easier now that many financial institutions provide statements and documents electronically, and much financial information is available on the Internet. Even if the original records are only provided on paper, these can be scanned into an electronic format and saved to the cloud, downloaded to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, or burned to a CD or DVD. Document Valuables Another step a taxpayer can take to prepare for a disaster is to photograph or videotape the contents of his or her home, especially items of higher value. The IRS has a disaster loss workbook, Publication 584 (located at www.irs.gov), which can help taxpayers compile a room-by-room list of belongings. Update Emergency Plans Emergency plans should be reviewed annually. Personal and business situations change over time as do preparedness needs. When employers hire new employees or when a company or organization changes functions, plans should be updated accordingly and employees should be informed of the changes.

Junior Service League Goes Above and Beyond Thanks for Your Leadership, Stefanie Pontlitz! ~ By Debra Taylor Tee ~
The outgoing president of Junior Service League of Greater New Port Richey (JSL) has a great deal about which to be proud. Stefanie Pontlitz and her dedicated group of hard-working ladies have collectively donated thousands of hours, old-fashioned elbow grease, and much-needed financial support to more than a dozen non-profit organizations and worthy causes throughout NPR and West Pasco County. So much so, that their fundraising efforts have soared to more than $30,000 during her tenure. Stefanie said, “I was ten years-old when my mom was JSL President, and I remember looking at those women thinking ‘these women have it all.’ That same thought crosses my mind whenever I look at our members. They are the cream of the crop! And after all of our awards and successes this year, others see it too. I see many more fruitful years for us ahead. I’m thankful these ladies have let me be their leader this year, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings!” JSL is comprised of women from all walks of life, who unite to selflessly share their time and talents to the benefit of the community they love! Their areas of expertise include teaching, banking, fundraising, and homemaking, just to name a few. The empowered individuals that make up this dynamic group of women may never have crossed paths prior to working together through JSL, but the resulting camaraderie, or ‘sisterhood,’ benefits everyone involved, but none so much as our community, as a whole. As president, Stefanie has been the “go-to” whenever anything was needed. She was in charge of running board of directors and general meetings; overseeing the various committees insuring all were on task, and daily operations of JSL flowed smoothly. With a dozen new members joining the team, Stefanie made sure everyone was welcomed and informed about the projects underway by the club. Further, Stefanie proudly served as liaison to the community on behalf of the club, “to let Pasco know how much good JSL is doing!” She explained, “In addition to the money we distribute to various organizations, we choose 2 sweat equity projects, where the girls can help the non-profits first hand. We don’t just write checks, we really make a difference. This year, we couldn’t decide, so we chose 3 projects to tackle hands-on!” www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com
The three projects were blessings to the recipients: ∙ PACE Center for Girls is currently receiving much-needed make-overs of their library and cafeteria. ∙ The RAP House project is in progress and includes new seating, a television, a wall desk, bookshelves, books, games and more. ∙H ealthy Families Pasco desperately needed freshly painted walls, and JSL made it happen. In 2014, JSL deservedly won the Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropic Service Organization of the Year award, thanks to their generous fiscal and physical support of dozens of area non-profit organizations. Stefanie also serves as Vice President of Development for United Way of Pasco and is active in Leadership Pasco, SPCA Suncoast, and Trinity Rotary. She and her husband, Derek, a financial advisor in downtown NPR, will reside in New Port Richey in the coming year. As Angie Gardner accepts the presidential role for fiscal year 2015-2016, women who have a desire to serve and support others are encouraged to join JSL! The club meets August – May, with a break for family in June and July. They will host a New Member Mixer on August 20th, with the location to be announced. One Community Now was proud to present a check to Metropolitan Ministries on June 11th in the amount of $21,588.66 from the funds raised at the Chasco Fiesta Hunger Walk 2015. Hunger Walk raised over $74,000 for the Pasco Pack A Sack Food for Kids program and Metropolitan Ministries Hot Meal program. Over $50,000 will be given to our Pack A Sack partners to provide food for food insecure children over the weekend. One Community Now is a 501c3 faith-based organization with the mission of Building Unity for Community Transformation. We work together with churches, businesses and organizations in our community to help meet the un-met and under-met needs in Pasco County. One Community Now is made up of representatives from various churches. Most of our focus has been on poverty related issues. We also host the One Community Now Veterans Stand Down and Neighborhood Impact in Holiday.

Hub Reynolds, Jr. “Hell, I’m Just Me” By Debra Taylor Tee His story is the making of several good ole country songs. He may not walk or talk like John Wayne, or write or sing like Hank, but he’ll be the first to share proudly, “Hell, I’m Just Me.”
Mason, 25, and Dallas, 21, are “Daddy’s boys” and Hub’s pride & joy, along with his two-year-old granddaughter, “Miss Addie,” or little Miss Addison Reynolds. Family means everything to him, which is how he decided upon his stage name of Hub Reynolds, Jr., a tribute to a very important relative.
That also happens to be the name of his hit single played in more than 120 countries around the world, and climbing the Reverbnation charts weekly. This upcoming, local, country star known to his loyal Pasco and Pinellas county fans – and those across the globe – as Hub Reynolds, Jr., is the product of a challenging life, yet one transformed.
Hub Reynolds was his uncle and popular country music “honky tonk” singer in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. Hub Jr., was once likened to his family member and mentor, considering his chiseled good looks, and his smooth country style. Rusty traded in his nickname for one with true meaning to him: Hub Reynolds, Jr.
Born Russell M. Reynolds, September 24, 1961, in Winterhaven, Fl, “Rusty,” as he was affectionately known, grew up in the Tampa Bay area until he was 15 years-old. Employment opportunities led his father to relocate to Jacksonville, and later to Atlanta, and the young man went along. Rusty remained in Georgia until 2011, when he returned to Florida following a divorce and the utter collapse of the world, as he knew it. Like many young people, Rusty dabbled in several trades through teens and early twenties. He started working as a bag boy at Winn Dixie in 1978, and spent 10 years working alongside his father at the popular grocery chain. He resigned as an assistant store manager in 1988, and entered the field of construction. Rusty’s niche as an electrician journeyman expanded to include electrical lighting design, and finally, builder/contractor. One of the youngest, most successful builders in Atlanta, Rusty Reynolds was highly acclaimed by one of the most well-known home inspectors in the Southeast United States, Jeff Pope. Pope described the homes designed and built by RMR Construction Company as “impeccable.”
After debilitating losses and three-and-a-half years of homelessness, Hub refused to give up. He has, instead, chosen to forgive those who hurt and disappointed him in the past, thanks to his solid Christian values. Hub has traveled 35,000 miles across America six times doing his own public relations, shaking hands and attacking the media markets, all while using the Hub Reynolds name to propel himself into the wonderful world of country music. His aspirations include recording a CD in Nashville at Trinity Broadcast Network, thereby making enough money to open three companies: Hub Reynolds Music Company, to represent and remarket his uncle’s songs to fund the Hub Reynolds, Jr., Music Enterprises Company, and a non-profit, RMR World Ministries Inc., a Christian organization to build baseball diamonds, food banks, shelters for abused women & children, and programs for Veterans and soldiers. “My faith is who I am,” stated Hub. “Hell, I’m Just Me.” You can download Hub’s hit single, “Hell, I’m Just Me” at www.CDbaby.com; and keep up with his progress on www.facebook.com/HUBREYNOLDSJR, and other social media sites.
Unfortunately, RMR shut their doors in December 2004, and Rusty became an independent contractor until May 28, 2006, the last day he worked in construction, as the economy imploded. After the collapse of his business constructing million dollar homes, Rusty suffered the loss of his 23-year marriage, when his wife filed for divorce as the bank account dwindled. Depression set in, and he became suicidal over time. So much so, that he actually measured the length of rope that would be necessary to hang himself from an I-85 overpass. Hub recalled this dark time in his life, “I planned suicide, but I couldn’t do it, thanks to my faith in God, and my boys.” www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Columbia Winery What can one say about our Columbia Chardonnay besides, ‘thank you Sir, May I have another.’ Having recently visited this wonderful winery in Woodinville, WA, and learning about their processes in creating this wonderful varietal, it was interesting to note that this Chardonnay was fermented in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures around 58°F to preserve the fruity esters. Tourism Manager, Pasco County New Port Richey, FL- Pasco County is a great destination to get outdoors and find an adventure in the sun. Visitors can find a wide variety of activities to fill their days whether it’s at a local watering hole, favorite restaurant, an island offshore or zip lining through the trees. Pasco offers friendly boat captains, tour operators and knowledgeable staff. Local businessmen and women who operate tourist destinations, provide services not only to visitors, but local customers as well. These tourism providers are the ones serving half a million tourists that visit Pasco on any given day throughout the year. One aspect that often gets forgotten is the spirit of community these folks have and what they give back to the community where they live and work. A great example of this happened late in June when a veterans group paid a visit to Anclote Key. What could a group of wounded warriors possibly get out of a boat ride to a barrier island? The answer is complex. Veterans like the company of other veterans who have experienced similar situations, some not so fun and very dangerous. Others experiences are the hijinks’ and shenanigans that go on between family members. The term brothers and sisters in arms hold true, in that veterans form tight bonds with their battle buddies and the protective group becomes a tightknit family structure. I know this because I am a veteran myself. The group of veterans visited from a group home where they are working to overcome some of the trauma they experienced overseas and are now trying to reintegrate their lives into “Civilian” life. The after effects of combat can be any combination

of things from Post-Traumatic Stress, Disorder (PTSD), drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness or anxiety. My Warrior Place sponsored the trip to the island as a way of connecting the wounded warriors with a “normal” activity. The purpose is to get them outdoors interacting with each other and to just relax. What made this unique is the two tour providers set aside time to give back and offer their “Tourist Amenity” for free. Capt. Bob Hubbard of Island Paradise Charters and Capt. Dale Hayberg another area boat captain and master diver, donated their time and boat costs to provide this service to the veterans of My Warrior Place. “It’s important to me to give pack to the community,” explained Capt. Hubbard. “Not everyone gets to see how beautiful our Gulf Coast is. This allows me to show them how proud I am of them and thank them for their service to our County.” When not shuttling visitors back and forth to Anclote Key, Capt. Hubbard’s business offers sunset cruises, weddings, beach Bash BBQs and he runs Adrenaline Fishing a near shore and offshore fishing guide service.
As the little plane taxied up to the white sandy beach it drew the interest of the entire Island. The pilot jumped out and waded ashore and introduced himself. “I’m Charlie Floyd, a Marine, and I’m here to take you flying.” This was the highlight of the day as each of the wounded warriors got to sit back seat on the DuckWing Triking plane, Sea & Sky Cygnet, for a trip above the island unveiling the deep crystal blue of the Gulf waters surrounding Anclote Key. Capt. Floyd echoes the feelings of the other captains, “I served and I want to continue to serve through supporting veterans’ programs that make a difference in the lives of our wounded warriors.” So when you think of Pasco County, the tourists, our attractions and outdoor fun, think of the local businesses that make up the tourism industry and are good community partners year-round using their “Tourist amenity” to give back to our local folks. “My office is the boat and the beach,” Capt. Hubbard said. “That’s something I just want to share with others.” In a surprise visit that day, a whine way above the island slowly grew louder and a V-Winged light-sport aircraft with pontoons appeared and landed just offshore.

Celebrating Sally and Sallybrating with SOCKS

While most 13-year-old girls are selecting bikini options for the day’s beach outing with friends, or taking interest in this week’s make-up and clothing trends, Sally Campbell is making a very important fashion statement of her own, and is making plans to attend “Christmas in July” to benefit cancer patients and caregivers. Sallybrating with SOCKS is Sally’s way of bringing smiles to cancer patients across America and here in her own backyard! Sally joined SOCKS, which stands for “Students Organizing Cancer Krazy Socks,” and is a junior board member of the non-profit organization, whose volunteers collect and distribute aloe-infused, moisturizing, and crazy socks, for cancer patients and caregivers in need of a fun level of warmth and comfort during what can be a cold and scary time. A student at Centennial Middle School, Sally has spear-headed fundraisers at her school, and successfully solicited support through donations from local businesses and her community. She is a regular volunteer at Relay for Life events throughout Tampa Bay, hosting booths and serving cancer survivors meals. Sally’s team raised over $1500, for the cure at the Dade City/San Antonio RFL event.

Recently, Sally received the “Disney’s Friends for Change” grant, which she used to host a spaghetti dinner at the Hope Lodge in Tampa, serving and visiting about 100 cancer patients and family members, each of whom were gifted a pair of socks! She is currently collecting donations of “socks and other goodies” for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital “Christmas in July” event, July 31st. “My main goal is to reach as many people as I can and continue to collect socks,” she said. To date, Sally has helped collect nearly 2,000 pairs of socks that have been personally delivered or mailed to cancer patients in all 50 states. Making cancer patients smile is her main priority! Doggie Day Trip We all love to spend a day off splashing in the water, exploring a nature trail or just taking a walk. That holds especially true for our four-legged family members. Honeymoon Island State Park has a great off leash dog beach. A little closer to home, Tarpon boasts a state-of-the -art dog park located adjacent to Tarpon Splash Park. There are several dog friendly parks like JB Starkey and Key Vista to go for a hike right here in Pasco, so grab that leash and put on your walking shoes.
