Another Happy Roof! I am the President of our Homeowners Association in Fl. I heard about Hammerhead Softwash through a friend who had contacted them to clean their roofs. After meeting with Joe Marchiselli, and having a demo section of my roof done for no charge, I was thrilled with the outcome and immediately contracted them to do all 20 units in our complex. Needless to say, our residents were thrilled with the job they did. Their staff were extremely polite and helpful. They even moved and put back furniture and plants while doing the work. Our members immediately phoned me and wanted to pay right away and couldn’t believe the price. We had our roofs cleaned 3 years ago by a pressure washing company and weren’t happy with the result. Hammerhead’s job by far excelled our previous cleaning and we are very happy to recommend them to anyone. -John Strong, President Norstar Cove Villas www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

Helping our Community Achieve Their Financial Dreams Robert Wolf of Sterling Wealth Management

Confucius said, “Choose a job that you love and you will never have to work a day in your life,” and that certainly rings true for Robert Wolf, owner of Sterling Wealth Management. Rob finds it fun to put together his clients’ financial information like a jigsaw puzzle. “I enjoy helping people grow their financial wealth so they can see that they can, hopefully, achieve their financial dreams. I love being part of that dream. Being able to say ‘You won the game, you can retire,’ is very rewarding,” he confessed.

Sterling Wealth Management is an independent advisory service, through which Rob provides his clients with unbiased support. Each financial plan is individually tailored for each client. Style & BEAUTY Julian Hartzog A superior level of artistic vision and expertise At first glance, Tarpon Springs resident Julian Hartzog’s eclectic wearable art fashions appear perfectly tailored for Judy Jetson, matriarch of “The Jetsons” animated intergalactic family. However, look further and discover a superior level of artistic vision and expertise. Julian’s initial exposure to wearable art six years ago at Wearable-X presented by the Dunedin Fine Arts Center for the last decade. What he observed sparked his imagination to conceptualize and create a spectacular collection of his own. He had seen artistic attire made from raw meat, vegetables, lampshades, balloons and even condoms. The electrical engineer and portrait artist found inspiration in Christmas decorations, and his vision became clear. Julian chose to approach his wearable art endeavor using sparkling metals to achieve the looks he envisioned. His stunning, runway-worthy couture, Girls in Ribbons was born, using sheets of

aluminum expertly wrapped around his models. At the August event, Julian explained about this year’s disco-themed collection, “I’m working with stainless steel that is laser cut and hand formed. It’s very shiny, like mirrors, and I am just hoping nothing malfunctions!” There were no malfunctions, and his success has been recognized for two consecutive years at the DFAC Wearable-X end-of-summer shows. Furthermore, his “sleek and modern,” Girls in Ribbons is currently displayed at the World of Wearable Art in Wellington, New Zealand, where he was Wellington International-Americas Award winner for the collection. “This is so exciting for Julian - especially at age 77!” says fellow Tarpon Springs artist and designer, Siobhan Nehin. “He is a hypercreative technical genius.”

Upon his return, David stopped by his office in downtown New Port Richey and entered through the back door. Becky thought he was an intruder and threatened to call the police, until David assured her he owned the building! Now married for “11 amazing years”, David and Becky take as much time as they possibly can out of the office to spend time together traveling and enjoying life!

Larry & Joanna DeLuca Love • Patience • Understanding

According to Becky, that’s their secret to a successful marriage. She recommends, “Marry your best friend and take time to be together as a couple, doing things you both enjoy; and make the most of the time you have with your spouse or significant other.”

For two people to have met in New Jersey in 1997, successfully survived a long-distance relationship for more than two years, married, moved to Florida, and blended their personal and professional lives, takes an incredible amount of love, patience and understanding, among other things, and that’s the continuing love story of Joanna & Larry DeLuca of DeLuca’s Fine Jewelry and Style Makers Salon. Larry fell in love with Joanna for her style, her flair and her beauty, and the list goes on. Joanna fell in love with Larry for his passion, his romantic nature, his attentiveness, and so much more! Together, this creative, dynamic duo combined their love, their passion, and their talents to create a solid marriage of 15 years, and a beauty business collaboration that is accentuating the aesthetic style of their family, friends, and neighbors throughout Trinity and West Pasco County!

Steve & Tina Farrell Love • Friendship • Loyalty Steve and Tina Farrell of Team Farrell Contracting and Roofing, met while attending high school in Long Island, NY, in 1986, and they have been together ever since.

David & Becky Dempsey Love • Friendship • Fun Dr. David and Becky Dempsey have a very interesting cutemeet story… They met at work in 1986, but not for a week after Becky started her new job at David’s dental practice. He happened to be out of town the week she started, so Becky did not know what her boss looked like. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

The proud parents of three daughters and a son: Annamarie (25), Christina (25), Shelby (20), and Stephen (18), Tina and Steve maintain balance between their personal and professional lives by consistently including their family in their work, charity and social events, as a better way of giving more back to the community they love! However, it’s the love they share between them that keeps the romance alive for Steve and Tina. “Steve is my BESTFRIEND and the Love of my life. It is just that easy. When you have love, friendship and loyalty, that is the secret to a successful marriage,” Tina added. 19

LOVE: Unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another; Brotherly concern for others Merriam-Webster should have Debi Shackowski‘s photo beside each of these definitions. When she was growing up, Debi’s parents were a very civicminded couple, active in the Lions and Kiwanis clubs. They raised their family to reach out and serve others whenever there was a need. As a teen, Debi chose to follow her parents’ lead, and she stepped-up to participate in a successful high school project in 1975. From that first experience in high school, Debi has compiled an extensive resume, and she continues to selflessly give of her time and her voice as an advocate for those in need, with love and conviction. • In the late 70s, Debi became a founding board member of Seminole Mall’s Teen Boards, hosting fashion shows, pageants, and other events as a means of providing girls with scholarships. • Debi volunteered with Health Rehabilitative Services annual Christmas Toy Shop, and 20 years later, she still volunteers annually, along with her children. • Debi served as President of the Pinellas County Chapter of Children with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD), and worked closely with the Board of Directors (BOD). • Debi was guest speaker for CHADD BOD National Conferences, and she was chosen to be the first legislative delegate for the state of Florida, in an effort to amend The Handicapped Act to include other impaired conditions. • From 1988-1990, Debi served as President of the Pinellas County School Board Department of Exceptional Services (DEES), and she was nominated for the State of Florida Department and Bureau of Exceptional Education Services as a parent liaison for children with special needs in the state of Florida.

It was during this tenure she worked with local chapters of the National Organization of Women and the American Civil Liberties Union, as well as with the Washington D.C. offices of Housing and Urban Development to uncover illegal practices within the residents program, and, ultimately, facilitated the termination of those board members responsible. Debi is a shining example of love and advocacy, and she has raised her children to have the same, generous spirit and strong voice. She and her children have made numerous trips to Washington D.C., to lobby for causes and meet with Senators and Congressmen. She has shared with them the importance of freedom of speech and lobbying, and the incredible impact the proper use of their voices can have, all the way to Congress, if necessary. Debi’s goal was to give back to the children within her community in the same way others gave to her children while she completed nursing school and they lived in transitional housing. She founded Marjorie’s Hope, an organization in memory and honor of her younger sister, who lost her life in a crash with a drunk driver in 1996. Marjorie loved God, her family and children. The mission of Marjorie’s Hope is to provide backpacks, school supplies, and other necessities to children like those whom Marjorie supported likewise. *Definitions from www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary

Welcome to Starkey Ranch Your New Home Awaits You! A new community is on the Trinity horizon, like no other of its kind. Positioned adjacent to James B. Starkey Wilderness Park, Starkey Ranch will encompass 2,500 acres consisting of residential communities, interconnected trails throughout the community, its parks, and local businesses, as well as a school for grades K-8. This exciting acquisition by Wheelock Communities was finalized in 2013, and culminated into an announcement in February 2014, regarding the future of the property. Today, master plans are underway to break ground in March and begin construction of beautiful, contemporary homes and the expansive site development. In 1922, Jay B. Starkey chased after his dream of being a cattle rancher, and he purchased tracts of land in Pinellas County, which later became known as Ulmerton Ranch. After the depression, he and his friend Dave Cunningham, entered into a partnership and began looking north to Pasco County, as little could be done to expand at their Pinellas location. In 1937, they drove 300-head of cattle north to the grassy expanses of the southwest corner of Pasco. Jay & Dave included Dave’s two brothers in a new partnership, and they purchased what became CS Ranch. By 1956, Jay was the sole proprietor of would be known as Anclote River Ranch.

He sold the cattle from the ranch to his son, Jay B, Jr., in 1965, while holding onto the citrus groves and timber business. Because it was obvious how economic development was affecting Florida, Jay Sr., made the bold decision to sell 18,000 acres of his ranch to the Southwest Florida Water Management District to ensure the land would not be developed, but be kept intact as a wilderness preserve for the benefit of future generations to see the beauty of West Florida as it used to be. That’s what you will find in the Starkey Ranch community, as it is destined to follow the spirit and legacy of the Starkey family. The 2,500 acres of what will become Starkey Ranch includes 800 acres dedicated to parks and recreational facilities, and 20 miles of trails that connect the community with areas of Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve. Be in perfect tune with nature and history at Starkey Ranch this spring, when the first homebuyers will have a selection of three types and sizes of single-family residences in the Whitfield Park neighborhood! Home designs have been predetermined to follow architectural styles such as Craftsman, Florida Vernacular, Spanish Revival and Ranch Modern, and feature rear-entry garages, and large front porches that overlook beautifully manicured lawns and landscapes.

Clean Up

Living Areas in 15

Minutes

By Sarah Aguirre what You Need: A basket, bag, or box to put non-living room items. A dust rag. A vacuum cleaner or broom. • Put all items that do not belong in the living room in a container. Do not try to pick up each item and place it where it belongs. • Tackle the couch. Brush off the couch onto the floor. • Dust down the coffee table. The goal here is to quickly brush off the table and neatly stack its contents. • Vacuum or sweep up the floor. Don’t move furniture. Don’t try to vacuum the pillows and couch. Leave these more in depth items for when you have more time. Do, however, remember to get the dirt we brushed out of the interior of the couch. Duct

Cleaning can be a

WASTE of

Money

Although there are certain occasions where cleaning your duct system can be beneficial, more times than not, it can even be counterproductive. Consider, if your ducts really are dirty, what caused it in the first place. If you don’t remove the cause, the problem will present itself over and over again. Instead, have a product installed called the Air Oasis that is installed in you’re A/C system continuously cleaning and sanitizing your air conditioning duct system and your home while the A/C fan is running. For about the same cost as getting your ducts cleaned properly, you can have the Air Oasis installed and always have cleaner air and a better indoor environment. These products use a technique engineered by NASA and enhanced by the Air Oasis research and development team. The process, called AHPCO, or advanced hydrated photocatalytic oxidation, results in a dramatic decrease in the amount of carbon-based contaminants in the air, meaning you’ll be breathing fresher, healthier air. The science is easy to understand, the cost is extremely reasonable and it comes with a money back guarantee. Call Best Services A/C for more information at 727-773-0151.

Editor’s LETTER

February is the month for love This issue is all about love! Love of family, love of community, love of business and love of life! Thankfully, I can honestly report that I’m on board with all three! Over the years, you’ve heard all about my love of family, time and again, ad nauseum! I’ve shared with you my love of chiropractic and how much it has enhanced my health and my life; and the spiritual connection I experience when I’m near the peaceful Gulf waters…or any body of water, for that matter! I’ve shared the love and joy of my wedding, my family vacations, and my involvement with the cultural arts and animal rescue organizations. However, it occurred to me as I was contemplating this article, that I may not have adequately conveyed just how much I love our local businesses & organizations! It goes without saying that working with Debbie Dawson for seven years has been a joy and pleasure, and it has afforded me the opportunity to build solid relationships with many small business owners. Possessing the biggest heart in the world, Debbie is a work-a-holic, with ever-attainable goals of befriending everyone she meets, and promoting and

supporting their local businesses. It’s proven beneficial in her success as a Publisher, RE/MAX Real Estate Agent, Mom, and Grammy, and it’s only ONE of the many reasons I love her! Like Debbie, I, too, love the local businesses and organizations with whom I’ve had the pleasure of supporting, promoting, and befriending over the years. West Pasco and North Pinellas Counties are blessed to have many amazing individuals sharing their talents and passions in our communities. I love that Metropolitan Ministries in Holiday just broke ground for the beginning of an amazing complex dedicated to providing transitional housing for hundreds of homeless individuals and families in Pasco County in need of shelter, a new start, and a break. Statistics indicate thousands of men, women and children are homeless in Pasco during any given year. Finally, I love that Trinity-Odessa is on the brink of such enormous economic growth! This huge expansion should increase the influx of traffic to benefit all of our precious local businesses in West Pasco and North Pinellas counties, and build supreme awareness to just how much our expanding, vibrant communities have to offer!

Business & FINANCE

Here’s How To Figure Out Whether You Should

Do Your Own Taxes BY LIBBY KANE

Do your own taxes if: You have a straightforward tax situation without dependents, investments, or significant assets or charitable contributions, and you don’t own a business. Those basic, free versions of tax preparation software mentioned above were created for people like you. You have the time and patience to deal with it. Taxes probably aren’t the kind of thing you should do with Netflix on in the background. Expect to set aside some time to give it your undivided attention — in 2012, the IRS estimated you’d need 16 hours to do all of the preparation work for the basic form 1040. You feel comfortable hitting submit and want that control over your money. If you feel comfortable navigating the software, looking up questions on the IRS site, and the idea of having to fix any errors doesn’t terrify you, then you’ll probably feel more comfortable doing your own. Hire a professional if: You earn over $200,000 a year. Kiplinger reports that IRS statistics show an increased likelihood of IRS audits once your household income passes $200,000, and even more so if you earn over $1 million annually. You’ve had a major life change in the last year. Did you get married? Buy a house? Have a baby? These all impact your tax filing, and, at least the first time you document them on your taxes, you might want someone to show you how best to do it. You have a complicated tax situation with dependents, investments, or significant assets or charitable contributions, or you own a business. Nearly every financial transaction comes with some kind of tax consequence, and the more transactions you have, the more things you need to take into consideration. People who own businesses, freelance, or are self-employed in particular might want the help of a professional to iron out their atypical tax situations — deductions for home offices, business meals and travel, and vehicles are also audit red flags. Learning the gift of emotional intelligence is forefront now more than ever before, because people are seeking alternative ways to live a better quality of life. This is The Art of the Heart Mastery: completing the math of the mix of emotions, and putting them into proper perspective, eliminating STRESS! Business & FINANCE DO YOU KNOW OF A LOCAL BUSINESS IN WEST PASCO THAT COULD USE A BOOST IN REVENUE? This Chamber Means Business! By Paul Friedlander Why the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce? Within minutes, dozens of friends and neighbors from our community crash a local Mom & Pop business where everyone shops! This amazing group has increased sales from $450 to over $2,000 in 30 minutes. Business owners are shocked as the Cash Mob West Pasco group enters their store each armed with a $10 bill. The “MOB” then retreats to a nearby restaurant to enjoy networking and a tasty lunch. Votes are taken for the next Mom & Pop business to “HIT” in the West Pasco County Come armed with a $10 bill, support a small local business, have fun, network, make new friends and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. You’ll be hooked, we all have a great time. Then, you vote for your favorite local business to be “MOBBED” next month. Please share. We would love to make this the largest “MOB” to loves to support our local businesses. www.facebook.com/CashMobof Westpasco

www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com

It’s actually quite simple — a chamber of commerce is a group that’s dedicated to protecting and promoting the local business community. The primary goal? To help business owners network and grow. The Chamber hosts networking events, fundraisers, workshops, and other activities, all with the aim of connecting local businesses. The Chamber has a good reputation, and many consumers have positive perceptions of members and their businesses. In fact, you may be interested to know that according to a 2012 study conducted by the Schapiro Group, 49% of consumers were more likely to think favorably of a local business if it was a member of the local Chamber — and 80% were more likely to purchase a product or service from a chamber member. The Chamber offer discounts to members on everything from office supplies to continuing education. You may get access to email lists, as well as first dibs on booths at trade shows and other events. ‘You get out of a Chamber of Commerce what you put in” is very true, but what if that Chamber helps you get some traction up front. “Sounds good to me!” For membership information, contact Paul Friedlander at the WPCC at: Paul@westPasco.com or 727-641-0575. Community EVENTS Top Diet Trends For 2015 Pollock Communications

36 February Issue 2015

Here’s a list of what registered dietitians say is trending for 2015. Their expert predictions are sure to affect consumer-purchasing decisions, influence food manufacturers and determine what’s on the supermarket shelves in the coming year: 1. Sprinkle your superfoods. This year, most registered dietitians named seeds and nuts (54%) as the superfoods that will reign in 2015. Kale remains the Queen of Greens though, with most of the nutrition experts surveyed agreeing that kale, Greek yogurt, coconut products and avocado are prevailing healthful food choices for consumers. 2. Go green… with tea. When it comes to better beverages, green tea gets high marks with 35% of dietitians selecting it as the drink of choice for its myriad health benefits. 3. The “beef” about beef. According to dietitians, most consumers view animal-based protein, such as meat, fish and poultry, as high-quality, but nutrition pros rank quality proteins differently. Nutrition experts recommend fish and seafood, eggs, legumes and nuts, poultry and dairy as healthy, high-quality proteins, followed by soy. Red meat is considered less healthy among the nutrition pros, most likely due to the saturated fat, cholesterol and high environmental demands required to produce beef. 4. Gluten-free diets dominate. According to the experts, 66% believe gluten-free or wheatfree diets will continue to be trendy in 2015. “Regardless of the lack of evidence consumers believe that eliminating foods with certain ingredients will help them lose weight or be healthier,” explains Jenna A. Bell, PhD, RD, Senior Vice President and Director of Food & Wellness at Pollock Communications. In fact, the survey revealed that 70% of dietitians believe consumers will be more interested in nutrition and weight loss in 2015 than they were in 2014. Dietitians also noted that we will see “clean eating” as well as the Paleo diet, as popular eating trends. 5. Old is new. Despite the popularity of some low-grain diets, half of dietitians agree that ancient grains, like amaranth, quinoa, spelt and freekah, will be a top trend in 2015. Pet CORNER

Everybody Needs Some Puppy Sometime

By Doreen Dam m

Unconditional love is hard to find these days but not when it comes on four feet. Dogs make great companions. You can tell them about your day and they won’t tweet all of your secrets. They won’t laugh at you when you are having a bad hair day and post it on Facebook. They enjoy hugs and give kisses freely. They are never too busy to spend time with you and always enjoy a good long walk. If dogs are not your type, consider the wide variety of options to share your love with and reap the rewards of pet ownership. Some of the benefits include lower blood pressure, less anxiety and improved immune systems. They can even boost your social life so plan more events with your pet in mind.
