Director Olympic Solidarity The idea of Olympic Solidarity was born more than 50 years ago in order to support a number of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) located in countries which had recently become independent. The IOC decided to organise its own assistance program to help the NOCs and, through them, the development of sport and the Olympic ideals. Since then, Olympic Solidarity’s general assistance policy has evolved considerably, both in terms of the variety of programs offered and the increase in financial resources available. The funds managed by Olympic Solidarity represent the share of the broadcasting rights from the Olympic Games belonging to the NOCs. The main Olympic Solidarity endeavours are to meet the specific needs of respective stakeholders and to adapt as much as possible programs to the situations of each country by applying a policy of flexibility and, hopefully, responding to the diversity of needs and requirements across the five continents. It is important to consolidate the progress made, but also offer new prospects reflected in the main objectives and strategies set by Olympic Solidarity.

These include advocating and promoting the Olympic Agenda 2020 values across all Olympic Solidarity programs and activities which cover the main areas of sports development: athletes, coaches, administrators, promotion of the Olympic values, knowledge-sharing and participation in the Games; increasing assistance for athletes and supporting NOCs in efforts to protect clean athletes; and strengthening partnership with the International Federations.

This last point is crucial, as the International Federations’ technical expertise, know-how, and knowledge of sport and their sphere of activity are essential to ensuring that the assistance and training programs designed, financed and implemented by Olympic Solidarity can be adapted in the best possible manner to our main stakeholders, i.e. to the 206 NOCs throughout the world, and to their athletes and coaches in particular.

Whether by examining athlete scholarship applications, providing access to training centres or sending experts to run technical courses for coaches, the International

ITTF President Federations work in close collaboration with Olympic Solidarity, and in doing so help to develop sport at all levels, including with the presence of National Federations on the ground.

Because it is clear that the fundamental basis for the development of each sport starts at national level, Olympic Solidarity encourages the NOCs and their affiliated National Sports Federations to constantly provide the best possible solutions for their athletes, to improve their organisational structures, to raise their management level and skills, and to make rational and efficient use of the resources available.

It goes without saying that the excellent results achieved thus far have only been possible thanks to the very fruitful and mutually beneficial collaboration with the International Federations, and particularly with the ITTF for almost 30 years now.

Indeed, the technical advice provided by the International Federations to their national bodies is invaluable. One entity cannot work alone and collaboration between all the parties – ITTF, Olympic Solidarity, National Federations and NOCs – is crucial in order to achieve satisfactory results in the mid to long term. Thanks to this collaboration, the funding which has been made available for important projects in relation to the development of table tennis, either from Olympic Solidarity through the NOCs or directly by the ITTF to National Table Tennis Associations, has been used to maximum effect.

In my capacity as Director of Olympic Solidarity, I would like to sincerely thank the ITTF for the excellent and fruitful collaboration enjoyed over the past few years, which has been based on openminded and focused discussions. Our joint strategy is to build a lasting legacy of success for table tennis, be it at the level of the athletes, coaches or sports administrators.

Together, we are doing our best to build a robust and sustainable high-performance system, to invest in the right areas, and to ensure that the right people are in place and have proper support around them.

Developing National Associations to realize sound structures for progressA major role for the International Table Tennis Federation is to support national associations in their efforts to develop projects focused on using sport for education, integration and socialization.

One key topic is the organisation of administration courses that will help national associations develop their own programs, as well as improving governance.

One of our fundamental missions as an International Sport Federation is to promote our sport globally, to be played in each corner of the world.

We want to include such minority groups as immigrants, people with disabilities, refugees and women. ALL should have the chance to play table tennis, not only at a high level, also just for fun. Table tennis is popular, universal and inclusive.

Notably in the most recent Olympic cycle, the ITTF reached a membership of 222 national associations and became the world´s biggest international federation. However, this should not be our ultimate goal.

The impressive number underlines the fact that table tennis is a fantastic sport, played everywhere; we must continue our efforts to develop the sport all around the globe.

Hopefully we can integrate the few countries that have National Olympic Committees but no national table tennis association, in the near future.

Sport and especially our beloved sport table tennis can break down barriers. Many projects which have left a lasting legacy have been realised; in particular “World Table Tennis Day” and “Table Tennis for All” have caught the imagination.

Most sincerely, I thank our Development, Education and Training Team under the guidance of Glenn Tepper, the Head of Operations, for their dedication and innovative efforts to developing table tennis around the globe.

Let’s make our sport popular, universal and inclusive.

ITTF Development and Education and Training Program began 18 years ago in 1999, with one staff member and a budget of US$60,000 including salary, travel and hospitality.

Today there is 10 fulltime staff, over 100 parttime course conductors and over 1.6 million USD in direct program support covering a comprehensive range of projects that continue to expand and innovate and which can be seen throughout this magazine.

The long running Continental Development Programs (including support for Continental Development Officers, World Cadet Challenge Continental Teams, Continental Federation administrative support, Coach Education, URC Courses, PTT Courses, Women’s Courses, Training Camps and Equipment Assistance) ; Hopes Program (including National, Regional, Continental, and World Hopes weeks as well as World Hopes Team) ; World Table Tennis Day-April 6 every year as the chance for everyone, everywhere to celebrate our passion for table tennis; Online Education (through ITTFEducation.com and Spins and Skills Coaching videos) ; our social programs through DreamBuilding; and the ITTF International Training Center Network, “With the Future in Mind” Scholarships, and Mentorship Program supporting our players and coaches all form part of a plethora of support for table tennis worldwide.

“ITTF DNA”-Developing National Associations is the key motto and guiding principle moving into the new quadrennial and all the above programs together with our newest project “ITTF Administration Course” will lead this pathway.

ITTF, already the leading International Sports Federation (IF) in terms of membership with 222 countries is very close to achieving the goal of being the first IF to have every country in the world as a member, with 4 countries remaining at the time of print.

The dream of bringing table tennis to every corner is getting closer, during the last Olympic Cycle five new member Associations were recruited and we expect the other four to be part of the ITTF family soon if not already done when you have this magazine in your hands. That would mean to have ALL countries in the World as ITTF members for the first time for any sport!

Development is for us not only a question of quantity, it means also quality and improving the services to our family. More than 600 courses have been organized during this cycle, which means 20% more than the previous, we are assisting the National Associations to run their own courses as well for a sustainable expansion. An expansion that considers everyone, like the newly APRIL 6 World Table Tennis Day which is an excellent tool to reach more people being Inclusive, Popular and Universal. The first two editions of the WTTD were celebrated with 354 events in a total of 108 countries!

We keep building our dreams with projects expanding like the Nittaku Dream Building in El Salvador, which started with 11 centres preventing children from being recruited by the gangs, has nowadays 19 venues. A project in rural Uganda, keeps helping to reduce school dropping rates. The latest Table Tennis for NepALL in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) has been launched to promote the table tennis for people with a disability.

Furthermore, there is the recognition from the sport community. Peace and Sport recognised the World Table Tennis Day with an award, same as Sport Accord which applauded the Ping Pong Paix project in Burundi and Congo DR. SportBusiness placed the ITTF as #1 International Sport Federation in “Global Popularity and Expansion”, Beyond Sport shortlisted us a Best Sport Governing Body twice and multiple films of social projects gained honours in Milano´s “Sport Movies & TV Award”.

Now, the future looks even brighter, just check the section “What is next” to have an idea. My thanks all development staff and course conductors for the teamwork, the ITTF Executive Committee, Continental and National Associations for their co-operation and support; also a special mention to Glenn Tepper for his continual advice.

I believe we have not reached our limits; that is our motivation. Table tennis is for all, for everyone, everywhere!

“Talents are born everywhere”, “knowledge is power” and “think globally, act locally” are few of the guiding principles that the ITTF Education & Training Program is pursuing with its activities aiming for (a better) future and for (the road toward) excellence. In the 2013-2016 Olympic Cycle the ITTF Athlete Development Model got full shape and we are proud that today it encompasses a continuous and sustainable pathway oriented toward high performance and elite sport. It starts with the Hopes, our most popular program that all the six Continents and also many National Associations worldwide have fully embraced.

From talents we move to prospects with the Rough Diamonds and even more so with the well-established “With the Future in Mind” scholarship program that offers a fast-track to the most promising Youth Olympic Games and Olympic Games candidates. Players, whom we often first meet at their early age of 10 during the Hopes, can embark with us on a journey that may last 10 years and conclude it by becoming Olympians. Isn’t that fabulous?

However, the above incentives are related to training, which represented the core in the initial years of the Program. In the last couple of years we have become more aware of the need not only to provide opportunities for players, but above all to offer tools to coaches enabling them to learn, develop and finally significantly improve coaching in their home environments. We believe that this approach is the only one that may ultimately bring success hence the educational side has become an important pillar of all our training-related projects. Besides, it also materializes in specially designed projects, like for example the Mentorship Program, e-learning via the educational platform ITTFEducation.com and the ITTF YoutTube channel and finally, through the access to some of the best training and educational hubs in the World, i.e. the International Training Centers members of the ITTF Network.

Players, coaches and officials have probably never had so many opportunities to train and learn as they do today, but our mission is far from accomplished; through partnerships we have to make sure that the numerous opportunities are exploited to their maximum, which in due time shall result in the acknowledgement that not only talents are born everywhere, but also champions are!

Fast forward to 2013 and Adham Sharara was elected to a final 4 year term, so technically speaking if the goal was achieved by the 2017 ITTF AGM the promise will have been realised, (despite the fact that Adham resigned mid-term) Only 4 countries (Eritrea, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and Bahamas) remain to become the first International Federation to have all countries worldwide as members.

ITTF is already the number one sport in terms of membership with 222.

At the time of writing, we were on a knife’s edge of achieving the goal set back in 1999.

Eritrea was a diamond in the rough and during their first course we discovered an existing and active National Association that we were not aware of, so that was one down.

The remaining three countries were met during the Rio Olympic Games with President Thomas Weikert, Deputy CEO Glenn Tepper and Development Director Leandro Olvech pushing to activate these 3 countries.

By the World Championships in Dusseldorf, 2017, we will either be celebrating this great achievement or to be so close that completing the quest by 2018 is an almost certainty.

Having achieved the maximum in quantity the next step, as we have done throughout the last 18 years is to focus on the quality.

Deutscher Tischtennis-Bund-DTTB (German Table Tennis Federation) Butterfly Butterfly has been a supporter of the ITTF Development Program since inception in 1999, which includes many projects such as: Peace through Ping Pong projects with Peace and Sport (Colombia, East Timor, Burundi, Congo DR) ;Tsunami Rebuilding, South Africa disadvantaged region project, Afghanistan project, equipment packages to 2 countries per year in 2013-2016 period, and many others.

Butterfly is also the major funding partner of the ITTF World Hopes project, providing opportunities for talented under 12 players worldwide to be involved in a structured program from National to Continental to World to Hopes Team.

Following the World Championships in Bremen, 2006, DTTB President and Secretary-General at the time, Thomas Weikert and Matthias Vatheuer contacted the ITTF Development Department wanting to support worldwide development though providing equipment packages. This has now been ongoing since 2006 with more than 15 countries receiving a significant package of tables, rackets, balls and scorers.

This is not the only area where Germany is active in developing table tennis.

In conjunction with German Foreign Ministry and German Table Tennis Federation, the University of Leipzig, has offered a 5 month course for different sports and different languages since 2011 including table tennis.

Participants only need to pay airfare. Hospitality and all tuition fees are paid. English-French-Spanish-Arabic speaking developing countries have all benefited.

Discussions are also underway to expand the DTTB support in 2017 with coaches to be sent to 2 African countries.

Chinese Table Tennis AssociationDouble Happiness The Continental Training Camp and Education Program called “China in…..” was introduced in 2014, supported by CTTA, funded by Double Happiness and ITTF Dream Building, and has to date include “China in Europe” and “China in Africa” in 2014, “China in Latin America” in 2015 and “China in Oceania” in 2016. “China in North America” is planned for 2017. Foundation for Global Sports Development (GSD) The Foundation for Global Sports Development is led by the well-respected international duo from USA, David Ulich and Steve Ungerleider.

From 2008-2012, GSD has provided US$30,000/annum for projects with a humanitarian leaning connected to the ITTF Development Program.

From 2013-2016, this was increased to US$50,000/annum to encompass also ITTF Education & Training projects such as Hopes.

For 2017-2018, this will increase again to include “table tennis for development” Refugee Projects and in 2019-2020 to US$100,000 to include components of the ITTF Athlete Development Model supporting young players worldwide.

ITTF wish to express our gratitude for this continual and increasing support.

Program since inception as well as supporting the “Stag ITTF Membership Countdown Assistance Project” whereby the last countries on Earth still not an ITTF member receive a significant package on joining ITTF.

Nittaku “Nittaku-Dream Building in El Salvador” was initiated in 2011 with the aim is to help disadvantaged children in the small Central American country. 11 rural areas were initially targeted.

“Our company is always willing to contribute to peace in our country; now we are proud to do the same on an international level in El Salvador”, said Nittaku´s President Mr. Isao Kiteoka.

“Also we appreciate the opportunity given by the International Table Tennis Federation.”

A highly pleased President and that was also the case with regards to the company’s Deputy General Manager, Mr Chiba.

“I am really happy that the ITTF gave us this opportunity, I have been in the table tennis business for 28 years”, he said. “It is the first time that I have been involved in a social program; I hope we can continue with such projects in the future.”

The project has now been running for 6 years and continues to expand and grow from strength to strength.

XIOM The South Korean manufacturer Xiom, led by Philip Kim, started an agreement with the ITTF named “Xiom Development Incentive Program” in 2011, where they provide eight equipment packages per year and have supported 48 countries in the last 6 years.

Each year, the first eight countries allocated an Olympic Solidarity Technical or a Developing a National Sports Structure Course receive the valuable offer.

They have also provided significant support to North Korea in a great show of solidarity and support for their northern brothers and sisters.

iPong provided 135 robots towards various development programs.

Stag Stag has been a supporter of the ITTF Development Program since the beginning and always the first to volunteer assistance for new and special projects especially when with a humanitarian link.

WORLD TABLE TENNIS DAY The World Table Tennis Community has a new motivation to celebrate the joy of playing Table Tennis: In 2015 World Table Tennis Day (WTTD) has been establisthed and covers the world every year on April 6 with lots of small and big activities able to gather all kind of people.

WTTD forms part of ITTF’s “Table Tennis for ALL” – Program and has the aim to make our sport popular, universal and inclusive. The term “ALL” not only means more people, but also different kinds of people in terms of age, gender, social status, culture and physical ability.

Under the slogan “Table Tennis for Everyone, Everywhere” WTTD puts the focus on having fun, not on competition, showing the world the bene-fits and pleasure of playing Table Tennis, bringing people together and ideally engaging new players in the long term.

In the first two years, a total of 354 events have been organized in a total of 108 countries being France and India the countries with most realized events (20 and 19 respectively).

The modality of implementation is simple: ITTF hosts one promotional main event each year in a different country and continent and cares about inviting all kind of relevant stakeholders to realize activities for April 6. Support is given through the provision of free and editable promotional material, a toolkit with helpful tips, a newsletter is sent out the weeks prior to the event, special initiatives are awarded and organizers have always the possibility for a direct and personalized contact with ITTF. The real stakeholders are all the many persons out there, doing lots of

activities to put Table Tennis into the spotlight every year on April 6.

Activities range from Guinness World Record attempt for most number of players in a table tennis rally, integration of immigrants or the use of Table Tennis for children to avoid engaging with gangs.

Some events even combined their celebration with additional noble aims like combating terrorism with Table Tennis Balls or planting trees in desert areas. Many organizers use unusual locations such as bars, shopping centers, pedestrian streets and public squares to celebrate and reach more people.

Why April 6?

SIMILAR AIMS - SAME DAY OF CELEBRATION April 6 has been established by the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace inviting all kind of stakeholders to cooperate, observe and raise awareness for the promotion of peace and sustainable development through sports. ITTF contributes to this invitation by organizing the World Table Tennis Day.

ITTF DNA - Developing National Associations ITTF DNA-“Developing National Associations” is our guiding philosophy in everything ITTF does, from Coach Education to URC courses to Online Education to Coaching Films to Women’s Courses to PTT Courses to Talent ID through Hopes Program to Competition Manager and Tournament Organizations Courses to Marketing Courses to Coach Mentorship to Athlete Scholarships and many more.

This is a free course, available at dna.ittf.com which can be very useful for both current and new members of National Associations, and can be modulized to target specific positions such as Finance for the Treasurer, or (ideally) done as a whole course.

Certification is provided either for the whole course or for the modules completed.

In 2017 ITTF DNA will have a new and very practical support for National Associations with the release of the ITTF Administration Course online.

Humanitarian Projects Expansion of ITTF Dream Building

Convinced that Table Tennis is an ideal tool for a positive social change, humanitarian responsibility remains high on the ITTF agenda.

Between 2013 and 2016, the ITTF, through its Dream Building Program, has supported several tailored projects in all continents bringing table tennis to minority or disadvantaged groups.

The concept behind the humanitarian projects is based on Sport for Development, where the technical aspects of table tennis are secondary and the main aim is the human development in a long term and sustainable way.

Since its inception, the ITTF Dream Building Program has been recognized by the Sport community with multiple international awards from prestigious organizations working within this field.

Global Partners

Peace & Sport

Peace and Sport (P&S), “L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport” is a neutral international organisation based in the Principality of Monaco under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco. The stated aim is to use sport as a vehicle for promoting peace in areas of the world that have suffered from conflict or extreme poverty. The ITTF and Peace & Sport have worked together since 2008 and established the “Table Tennis for Peace” program which targeted children from displaced families in Colombia (“Ping Pong Paz” project), children from disadvantaged areas with conflicts among their neighbourhoods in East Timor (“Ping Pong Ba Dame” project) and children from 4 villages with tribal conflicts between them and risks of recruitment as soldiers in Burundi and Congo DR (“Ping Pong Paix” project).

The Peace and Sport Cup is another joint project and brought to Qatar professional players from countries divided by ideological or political difference, some now less noticeable with the passage of time, stood side by side. Those players had to compete together as pairs, with some highlights being DPR Korea and Rep. of Korea playing side-by-side, or the doubles pairing of India and Pakistan.

April 6, in which both organizations promote together the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, as well as the World Table Tennis Day. Both ITTF and Peace & Sport look to provide opportunities for further engagement of sport within local communities.

Dream Building is the ITTF’s Social Responsibility Program and aims to ensure that: • Developing countries have access to the sport, and using Table Tennis as a means to teach peace and other values • Enough coaching / umpiring / management courses are provided to associations all around the world • Athletes with disabilities can keep their dream burning • Junior athletes are given sufficient opportunities and programs to develop in the sport and achieve their Table Tennis dreams • Countries devastated by natural, or man-made disasters, receive additional aid with rebuilding, courses and equipment packages.

United Nations Office of Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) Under the leadership of Mr. Wilfried Lemke, the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon, this agency has the task to advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals worldwide and specially with the United Nations member states and its delegates.

This advocacy moved in 2012 beyond the politics and bureaucracy into action on the field with an ambitious project. The education of young leaders of developing countries´ NGOs using sport for development and peace.

The selected participants at the camps are particularly committed individuals in local sports and youth organisations in their home countries, where they harness the potential sport offers, for example to integrate people living with disabilities, to strengthen and empower girls and women within their communities, and to teach basic skills to people entering the job market. All the participants strive to harness the social potential of sport to teach values and hence help bring about lasting change.

As a broad-based program, the

camp primarily promotes the young people’s leadership skills through lessons on theory and practice, professional exchange, excursions and intercultural learning.

Ping Sans Frontières (PSF) The international not-for-profit charity organization Ping Sans Frontières works to develop table tennis as an educational tool in developing countries, as well as in France. Their methodology of intervention is to accompany communities in their own development. PSF and the ITTF are partners since 2014 and cooperate in field projects, the World Table Tennis Day and editing a manual on how to build tables locally, with local craftsmen using affordable material.

Featured Dream Building Projects

ITTF-UNOSDP Dream Building in Uganda Birungi Lloyd, a young Ugandan rural teacher who participated in the first Youth Leadership Camp held in Doha, decided to use table tennis to improve children´s life when he returned back home after the camp.

He is a leader of the Hoima Network of Child Rights Clubs (HONECRIC) which operates in rural schools in Western Uganda, and with the support of the ITTF and UNOSDP, created a project where children must attend school in order to play table tennis. As a result, it brought drop out school rates to an unprecedented low level. Honecric now operates in 52 locations and reaches over 6000 children teaching them life skills like communication, cooperation, teamwork and confidence.

The Japanese Embassy in El Salvador and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency have been involved providing sport equipment and several volunteers while the Salvadorian National Sport Agency (INDES) embraced the project with logistic support.

Haiti Recovery

The task is now to put theory into practice by organising courses, developing the sport in schools, promoting links between the national federation and clubs.

After the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010 the international table tennis community and ITTF moved quickly in order to assist and reinstall the sport in the country. The response was extraordinary and approximately US$150,000 in cash and in-kind donations were collected. The funds raised were used for a comprehensive development program, which started with an Olympic Solidarity funded course but continued until today with regular visits from ITTF experts.

Nittaku Dream Building in El Salvador aims to prevent children from communities in risk to be engaged in gangs or gang-related activities. It began in 2012 in 11 strategical venues all over the country and after 4 years has been expanded to 19 regions, reaching more than 2000 children.

The coaches have been trained not only on technical skills, but also on the social aspects to be seen as role models by the youth, which very often lack proper adult advice. Every month the groups work on different values or topics such as respect, tolerance, self-esteem

University of Leipzig The International Coaching Course (ITK) is a further qualification course for coaches as well as physical education teachers with a duration of one semester at the Sports Science Faculty of the University of Leipzig. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM The Mentorship Program aims at offering one more avenue for personal development to coaches already committed to professional coaching and to enable access to the most prominent experts to facilitate the knowledge transfer.

Li Nan (CHN), Ruizhi Liu (CHN), Peter Karlsson (SWE), Dirk Wagner (GER) and other prominent experts are the guiding forces for this exciting and very individualized Program that follows the principle “learn from the best” and that offers both structure and flexibility.

The structure is provided through the mentorship workflow and an obligatory assignment prepared by the mentee.

Flexibility is essential to support varying individual mentoring needs across specific learning goals, preferences and learning styles that cannot be easily delivered through regular learning and certification programs.

The true and long term success is to be measured by the number of coaches that will be able to raise the standard of coaching in their countries.

The ultimate measure of that uplifted coaching level will be in the number and level of the players that they will nurture in their career.

The ITTF International Training Center Network was set up with the ambition to play a significant role in the implementation phase of the ITTF Athlete Development pathway.

The model itself stretches from Talent Identification initiatives – the ITTF Hopes Program, to Prospect Development – Rough Diamonds and Youth Olympic Games related projects, to Olympic Games preparation – With the Future in Mind, and finally Coach Education – supplemental and advanced education, delivered online or through mentorship.

After the revamp of the Network and its structure in 2016 it now consists of 12 International Training Centers, endorsed by their respective

National Associations, that are open for national, regional, continental and international participation, working in general support for the sport of table tennis and its growth, quality improvement and promotion.

The structure of the Network aims to reflect the different levels, orientations and conditions that ideally serve in the best possible way the interested clients, i.e. players and coaches, and therefore consists of 4 levels of training centers: Academy, High Performance, Elite and Hot Spot.

Each Center is operating on its own financial merit, under the laws and regulations of that country and with their own set of priorities, but agrees, by accepting the inclusion into the Network, to follow the spirit and solidarity of international sport, regulated in the ITCN Directives supported by ITTF laws and regulations.

The general build-up of the Network provides to the international table tennis community with a number of options for staging educational events, training camps as well as individual training arrangements for targeted players and coaches.

HOPES PROGRAM The ITTF Hopes Program is one of the many ITTF development initiatives targeting global reach and overall quality growth of table tennis. The number one goal is to encourage National Associations to run Talent Identification Programs and also to promote and work with young talented players in the U12 age cut for future success and development. The role of the ITTF Education & Training is to provide expert guidance, incentives and opportunities while following up with the education of coaches.

The latest modification and improvements to the Hopes model should considerably strengthen the role of the National Associations as well as of the Continental Federations and secure involvement, engagement and ownership of the young talented players and promising coaches, all following the new ITTF DNA “Developing National Associations” philosophy.

The ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge features a limited number of participants, 16 girls and 16 boys players with a maximum of 32 coaches, who qualify through their Continents using the following quota per gender: 3 places for Asia and Europe, 2 places for Africa and Latin America, 1 place for North America and Oceania, 1 place for the Host, while the 3 remaining places are awarded to National Associations based on a call for Wild Cards applications meeting the set criteria.

The World Hopes activity is organized as a seven day event featuring an official training camp conducted by World renowned experts and an internal tournament. Besides, all the participating coaches take part in in a mandatory online course held in the month prior to the activity that consists of different reference material, quizzes and assignments.

The ITTF Education & Training Program covers full hospitality for all the participants, who qualify and enter for this prestigious event, whereby full participation in the official training camp (World Hopes Week) and the World Hopes Challenge is mandatory for players seeking eligibility and selection to the Hopes Team.

DreamBuilding Hopes Ambassador is the title awarded to one selected player per year, a former Hope, who serves as a role model to all the upcoming Hopes.

The selection is based on “on and off” court behavior and table tennis results and the nomination comes along with a scholarship.

Since the inception of the Ambassadorship in 2014 three young players – Adriana Diaz (PUR), Jha Kanak (USA) and Youssef Abdelaziz (EGY), have earned this honor and did a fantastic job in keeping the values of the Hopes Program on a high standard.

The With the Future in Mind Program is the core component of the ITTF Athlete development Model targeting Prospects from non-traditional Table Tennis markets in the pursuit of their Olympic Dream. It’s a complete educational scheme covering identification, preparation, qualification and education of athletes, coaches and officials.

The WFIM that mainly due to the close and fruitful cooperation with Olympic Solidarity provides crucial support to identified young talents from all over the World. Following ten years of close cooperation with involved NOCs, National Associations and Olympic Solidarity, the ITTF WFIM project is now an established form of active learning, by doing and collecting valuable experience. Athletes and coaches selected for training camps or subject to long-term stay at ITTF recognized International Training Centers are learning from high-level coaches, other experts and sparring partners on a daily basis. The main challenge, however, remains in the hands of the National Associations to plan accordingly and to constantly embark on the road to excellence securing more individually based and professional planning.

The ITTF Education & Training continues to actively provide support to targeted athletes for their preparation, qualification and later their preparation for the Games themselves. The focus of the first two years of the Olympiad is on the Youth Olympic Games candidates and in the last two years of the Olympic cycle to Olympic Games candidates.

The program is also following the principles of “Global Reach” and “Universality”, two aspects that the ITTF is proud to have successfully implemented in all our programs and projects.

Furthermore, the main pillars of the project beside the obvious education and training elements, are the principles of shared commitment and proactivity, which provide a lasting legacy and lead toward the DNA of our sport, i.e. Developing National Associations, which is one of our guiding principles.

The motivation of going online and set up a comprehensive tool is to develop an educational culture by expanding the learning opportunities from training and competition halls to a virtual classroom, i.e. the ITTF educational platform.

The currently available content is mostly closely linked to the programs and projects run under the Education & Training umbrella, like for example Hopes, Young Umpires Project and With the Future in Mind programs. Besides, the platform also serves as a point of reference for good practice sharing and as a communication hub for various stakeholders.

The platform offers free access and so far more than 3,200 users from all over the World have already signed up. The video section has also been shared on the ITTF YouTube channel with the “Technical Advice from Experts” section that today features 32 videos of experts from very different fields of interest in sport – technical, tactical and other sport sciences.

The collection is constantly expanding and in 2017 a new series of technical videos presented by some of the most globally renowned experts from table tennis and from sport in general will be launched aiming to additionally enrich the content.

Spins n’ Skills

In order to offer to coaches and players an additional tool for their improvement and for a greater understanding of the sport, the ITTF has released the first series of tutorial videos called “How to Play Table Tennis” .

Eight videos focusing on some of the basic strokes and skills are available on the ITTF YouTube channel and accessible also via the educational platform ITTFEducation.com. Each video lasts three minutes and features also 3D presentations of the most important insights of the skills that are demonstrated by some of the best European players in recent times – Elizabeta Samara (ROU), Georgina Pota (HUN), Marcos Freitas (POR) and Michael Maze (DEN).

ITTF World Cadet

Challenge The ITTF World Cadet Challenge is a unique event on the ITTF Calendar, combining competition, development and education & training. Eight teams of 4 boys and 4 girls including 6 continental teams, and Hopes (under 12) Team all of which must be represented by 4 different countries in each team, and Host Team. There is a common training camp prior to the event, where every team trains once with every other team.

This unique interaction between players of different countrieslanguages-cultures-religions firstly within their team, and later training with every other team, ensures the social interaction makes for a great educational experience for every player. The education is not restricted to the athletes as nightly educational sessions for coaches based on the world’s best practises are an important part of this event.

Since it was first introduced to the ITTF Calendar (Hungary 2002) when Zhang Jike was the winner of the singles, this unique event is becoming more and more the favorite for many players, coaches and National Associations as they can send their top and promising Cadet players not only for an International event participation experience but also to attend a high level ITTF Training Camp where an ITTF Expert is assigned to educate and share the experience with both players and coaches on how to proceed with their future Table Tennis careers.

After being organized along with the World Junior Circuit Finals since 2003, in 2012 Guam was the first to organize the World Cadet Challenge after the decision of having it separated from the WJC Finals giving it more value, quality and international focus.

In 2015 where it was hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Mixed Doubles event was first introduced together with the existing Teams, Singles and Doubles events for Boys and Girls.

But again, giving it more uniqueness, the Mixed Doubles pairs can only be formed from different teams where a Boy/Girl get the chance to randomly pick his/her mixed double partner regardless the differences in ranking, language or even height!!

Gender equity and equality have always been aspects very much observed in the International Table Tennis Federation.

The Women’s Development Program and the Women’s Working Group were formally established in 2003.

After a successful 10-year period of Women targeted activities, such as Courses, Training Camps, Forums and Meetings, many of the objectives set initially were reached.

A steady increase in participation of women in development activities and competitions were recorded.

The ITTF was also represented in International Women Conferences.

In 2013 a new direction was taken and that was the integration of Women Activities into the Development Programs. As a consequence it was decided that the Women’s Working Group would be resolved and a Commissioner for Women in Sport would be appointed and be in charge for gender related matters.

The Women in Sport Commissioner has the mandate to: • liaise with the Development Program, Education and Training Program and Development and Continental Council; • advise the Executive Committee on policy and progress relating to gender equity; • monitor gender equity in the ITTF; • provide technical expertise and guidance to all committees and professional staff.

Interesting notes: • Every year at the WTTC, an update of Women in Sports activities is presented during the Development Workshop.

It’s a great opportunity for ITTF, Continental and National representatives to exchange ideas about the future.

• Several meetings are planned for the promotion of Women in Sports; In 2013 the Women in Sport Commissioner attended the Women’s World Cup and met with players. In 2014 a representative of the Athletes Commission was appointed to attend and discuss with players. In 2015 the Women in Sport Commissioner attended the DCC meeting in order to discuss with the Continental Presidents on ways to promote Women in Sports.

• In 2016 Yelena Druzhkova (Kazakhstan Table Tennis Federation) and Sue Stevenson (Table Tennis Australia) represented the International Table Tennis Federation at the first ever International Federation Women in Leadership Forum, jointly organised by Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

• The number of girls and women taking part in the development projects is increasing, with 2015 activities reaching 40.06% of female participation.

• The number of female players participating in ITTF Events is maintained around or above 40%, including the Junior Circuit, World Tour and World Championships.

• For the 2014 WTTC a record participation was broken in Women’s Team Event with a total of 94 teams.

• In 2014, Li Xiaoxia was awarded by the Association of National Olympic Committee, as the Best Female Athlete of London 2012 Olympic Games.

• In 2014, Natalia Partyka was nominated for the International Women’s Day Recognition Award, by the International Paralympic Committee.

• In 2015, Shaikha Hayat was awarded by the IOC with the IOC Women and Sport Award for Asia.

• In 2015, Sarah Hanffou, founder of Ping Sans Frontière was awarded by the Foundation for Global Sports Development, as one of the 2015 Athletes in Excellence.

From grassroots to rising stars Since the PTT governance moved from under the umbrella of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to the ITTF, the integration philosophy has been synthesized with the motto, One Sport One Family. The practical consequences in the Development and Education & Training Program is the aim to integrate PTT in all existing programs rather than duplicating.

With the support of the IPC, each year there are 6 courses (one per Continent) that focus on PTT, they are normally CoachEducation, Training Camps, URC courses or Classification Seminars.

PTT components are being included in all possible educational programs from the ITTF in order to move from the awareness phase into implementation.

PARA TABLE TENNIS 3 Natalia PARTYKA from Poland qualified for both events for the third time, while winning 4 gold medals across 4 Paralympics. Both Melissa and Natalia are integration role models for ITTF.

Featured PTT Projects

Smash Down Barriers Program

Table Tennis for NepALL Table Tennis for NepALL is a joint project of the ITTF, UNOSDP and the International Working Group of Sport for the Disabled. It was launched in 2016 with the aim to develop table tennis for people with a disability in Nepal. Besides regular training sessions, the project ensures the long-term sustainability of the project. A special focus was given to the reconstruction and adaptation of Table Tennis Centres to the needs of people with a disability, especially those affected by the earthquake of 2015. More than two hundred disabled players receive weekly training sessions.

The ITTF together with its 6 continental members funded the reconstruction of the table tennis centre damaged by the earthquake, with its inauguration carried out on the April 6 as the official launch of World Table Tennis Day. See Video:

“Smash Down Barriers” is a sport-for-development program supported by the Australian Government, Table Tennis Australia and ITTF-Oceania. Its objectives are to improve the lives of people with disability by: 1. Increasing levels of physical activity.

2. Providing leadership opportunities.

3. Promoting social inclusion.

2016 was a very successful year for the program. 5 countries joined the program, which currently operates in Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu in the Pacific Region, and Indonesia and Thailand in South East Asia. 2755 people with disabilities participated in table tennis activities and 41% of them were female.

The impact of the program is far more significant than simple statistics as illustrated by the story of Kope Taberanibou. Kope acquired his disability in 2009 when he was injured during Hurricane Thomas. Kope was depressed and afraid, because people with disabilities are often a source of shame and they’re discriminated as a result. 6 years later Kope was introduced to the Smash Down Barriers program and immediately fell in love with table tennis.

Kope’s story is remarkable, but it’s not unique. There are thousands of people with disabilities who are discriminated or neglected simply because they have a disability. Spotlight on Africa Khaled EL-SALHY, PRESIDENT AFRICA TABLE TENNIS FEDERATION We had a very comprehensive program for Development and Education & Training throughout Africa during the term of 2013-2016 covering the whole continent under some sort of rotation procedure with priority to those African Associations hosting official African competitions.

The program is very flexible to give a chance to each Association to select its preferred section needs for more promotion.

We continued having Coach Education but with possibility for the base level (L1) and also for the advanced level (L2), then coming now to the stage of professional level (L3).

URC Education also took a main part of the program with a very good planning for IR Education/Evaluation through a long term time table during our official African competitions in the previous 2 years and our match officials are well prepared to join an ITTF IR School soon for qualifying to be authorized IRs from Africa.

Then we had also some other Education programs for Tournament Organization plus practice camps for Juniors & Cadet especially prior to the ITTF-Africa Juniors Championships.

Special programs were available each year for Women & Para TT to promote such areas within Africa and to enlarge the number of Associations taking part in both categories.

Finally we had in the recent term (20132016) a very good Hopes Program

starting each year with National level followed by Regional Continental level to make final selection of the top African Hopes to take part in the ITTF Hopes Week & Challenge representing the whole continent, and I am so honored to find out that our African Hopes are doing very well in the final stage every year to ensure being a part of the ITTF Hopes Team taking part in the World Cadet Challenge.

I am so grateful to ITTF Development and Education & Training Department for their great efforts to follow-up with Africa as one of the largest continents to spread DET Programs Continentalwide and thanks to all Experts whom were responsible to conduct such remarkable program activities.

Cai ZHENHUA, PRESIDENT ASIAN TABLE TENNIS UNION To achieve overall progresses of our beloved sport across all regions in Asia has always been a priority of the ATTU, and it is what the ITTF/ATTU Development Program is all about.

Over the past four years, this program offered a world-class stage for young players in Asia to improve their skills, more opportunities for women and para players to get engaged, various education and training courses to increase the quality of coaches and match officials, equipment assistance to meet the needs of member associations, and many other kinds of activities that had spread the joy of table tennis to every corner in Asia.

Ronald KRAMER, PRESIDENT EUROPEAN TABLE TENNIS UNION The Executive Board newly elected in 2013 started its work in this area with new enthusiasm, adopting new goals and objectives for Europe. One of the first acts of this new board was to start a development program with newly defined and approved targets and methods for the improvement of top table tennis in Europe. The appointment of an experienced top coach as development manager and the combination of development of top table tennis – the so-called Eurotalents program - and supporting national associations appears to be successful.

The support from ITTF and the financial contribution of ETTU itself has led to a so far successful program of supporting young talents in the goal of reaching world top level. Of course it could not be achieved without additional education of coaches, the field to which ETTU devoted a great deal of its attention too.

Juan VILA, PRESIDENT LATIN AMERICAN TABLE TENNIS UNION LATIN AMERICA COMMITTED TO DEVELOPMENT Without doubts, in Latin America, there is an air of commitment to the development of Table Tennis, thanks to the efforts of the great majority of the countries of the Continent in conjunction with the ITTF Development and Education & Training Programs.

The excellent competitive results confirm this and especially in the period 2013-2016. The historical gold medals obtained by the teams of Latin America in the World Cadet Challenge 2015 were dreams come true.

Today, in Latin America, we plan and organize better, thanks to the continuous training process that we carry out, where the programs of courses and competitions are executed with great equity and transparency in our three major Regions (Central America, South America and the Caribbean).

There is still a lot to do, a long way to go, things to correct, but also a vaste amount of passion, great hopes, because we are aware that there is a great future.

Ramón ORTEGA MONTES Development Officer for Latin America Latin American Development program during these four years is remarkable for two reasons and both of them are of solidarity, the first one, that countries are giving the chance to neighboring countries to participate in the courses they organize; second one, many countries are trying to have their own course conductors and have as many as possible, coaches courses to have higher level in table tennis.

The program is working well and one mark of it are the World Cadet Challenge Girls’ Teams and Girls´ Singles Gold Medals on 2015. Some goals were reached but still we have the idea of having higher standards to reach the highest levels!!!

Tony KIESENHOFER, PRESIDENT NORTH AMERICAN TABLE TENNIS UNION The ITTF Development Program continues to play an important role in North America. Programs such as the Cadet Challenge, the Hopes Challenge, Women in Table Tennis, Junior camps and last, but not least, the annual PARA Table Tennis camp strengthen the fabric of North American Table Tennis.

These programs present an opportunity for athletes, coaches and administrators to exchange views, experience and expertise. ITTF North America has been working to enlarge these activities thereby increasing the footprint and creating a greater impact.

Development activities in the US Virgin Islands and Bermuda have become an annual effort addressing the need of these associations to develop table tennis from the ground up.

This may be a good occasion to urge the ITTF to expand these types of development activities and with adequate flexibility to address the different needs of the different continental associations, resulting in quality growth of table tennis around the world.

The opportunities, offered through the Development and Education & Training programs, are proving vital for our region of Oceania in supporting our National Associations, especially the isolated nations, to become more capable and sustainable.

We continue to try to get a relevant course to every National Association’s every 2 years through our Development Coordinator Michael Brown.

Michael’s close cooperation with Glenn Tepper, the ITTF staff and course experts has proved beneficial and left a large legacy throughout our widely spread region over the last 4 years.

Along side this our Events and Marketing portfolio is also lifting to new levels through support from ITTF Marketing Director Steve Dainton and his staff. Steady progress in all aspects is continuing.

ITTF- Oceania are indeed grateful for the support received from ITTF through these programs and look forward to further cooperation.

Michael BROWN Development Officer for Oceania The ITTF-Oceania Development Program continued to evolve throughout the 2013-2016 quadrennial, with a continuation of programs, as well as new programs introduced.

The biggest addition to overall development of table tennis within the Oceania region was the creation of the “Smash Down Barriers” Disability Table Tennis Program, which was made possible through the financial support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australia), and Table Tennis Australia.

This program has assisted to further develop Para Table Tennis throughout the region, and has provided opportunities for People with Disability to become integrated into their local communities.

At the beginning of 2015, a Regional Course Conductor Training was hosted, with participants from 12 different National Associations in attendance, which has helped to further increase the number of ITTF-PTT L1 Course Conductors within Oceania, which has seen an increase in the number of locally organised coach education courses, including New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Tuvalu.

The continued support received from several National Olympic Committees, Olympic Solidarity and the Oceania National Olympic Committees has assisted to continue the development of table tennis throughout the region, and we look forward to continued collaboration over the coming years as well.

Olympic Solidarity have been a strong partner of ITTF since the beginning of the ITTF Development Program in 1999.

As you can see above this amounted to nearly US$2,000,000.00 over the quadrennial to add to the over US$4,000,000 Development and US$1,600,000 Education & Training Program funds, going directly to the many and varied programs.

The aim of Olympic Solidarity is to organise assistance to all the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), particularly those with the greatest needs, through multi-faceted programs prioritising athlete development, training of coaches and sports administrators, and promoting the Olympic values.

This is funding from outside our sport so is a bonus to what is provided through the ITTF Development and Education & Training Programs. ITTF continually seeks

Learning from the best,

Chinese experts spread the word

Knowledge is the key to progress; it is the fundamental requirement for raising standards. The logic is simple, find those who possess the bank of information and then organise the word to be spread.

In the sport of table tennis, there are experts throughout the world who can advise at the very highest levels but if we look to the country that has enjoyed the greatest level of success in modern times, the country that has raised standards, there is no question as to the answer.

China has taken the sport to new levels; thus organising visits by experts from planet earth’s leading nation in the sport to the continents of the world was the initiative formulated in 2014.

Organised under the auspices of the ITTF Development Program, supported by ITTF Dream Building and the Chinese manufacturer, Double Happiness; the first on the list was appropriately Europe, the continent were the sport was born.

The National Institute of Sport in Luxembourg was the home for China in Europe from Thursday 2nd to Thursday 9th January 2014; a total of 20 national associations were represented; 23 boys and 22 girls alongside no less than 20 coaches.

Li Xiaodong was the head coach on duty, he was assisted by Chen Qi, the 2004 Olympic Games Men’s Doubles gold medallist in partnership with Ma Lin. Next on the list was China in Africa, the picturesque coastal town of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia was the home for the five day itinerary which commenced on Friday 5th September and concluded on Tuesday 9th September 2014.

Overall a total of 31 players were present, 20 boys and 11 6

girls, representing the National Associations of China, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, South Africa and Tunisia.

All worked under the watchful eye of experienced Chinese coaches with one being a name of most notable pedigree. Present to demonstrate his outstanding skill and give advice was Liang Geliang, the player who represented China in the 1970s and seemingly could turn defence into attack or attack into defence with equal aplomb.

China in Europe and China in Africa; the following year it was China in Latin America; the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico was the home.

Matters commenced on Wednesday 12th August and will conclude on Sunday 16th August.

Dr. Zhang Xiaopeng led the Chinese party; in addition to Puerto Rico, players from travelled from Aruba, Barbados, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala,

Guyana, Peru, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The schedule commenced on Monday 14th October and concluded on Saturday 19th October 2015.

Three visits to the northern hemisphere, the next was to the southern; one year after the excursion to the Caribbean, the destination was Tweed Heads on the east coast of Australia.

Proceedings of China in Oceania started on started on Monday 14th October and ended on Saturday 19th October.

Overall the program includes 22 players and 11 coaches from seven countries: Australia, China, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

What’s Next ITTF Development and Education & Training Programs continue to expand and innovate.

Our current list includes: Continental Development Programs (including support for Continental Development Officers, World Cadet Challenge Continental Teams, Continental Federation administrative support, Coach Education, URC Courses, PTT Courses, Women’s Courses, Training Camps and Equipment Assistance) ; Hopes Program (including National, Regional, Continental, and World Hopes weeks as well as World Hopes Team) ; World Table Tennis Day-April 6 every year as the chance for everyone, everywhere to celebrate our passion for table tennis; Online Education (through ITTFEducation.com and Spins and Skills Coaching videos) ; our social programs through DreamBuilding; and the ITTF International Training Center Network, “With the Future in Mind” Scholarships, and Mentorship Program supporting our players and coaches.

So with such a list ongoing in 2017-2020 what could possibly be next?

For 2017-2020 we plan to implement the following: • ITTF Bachelor of Sports Coaching specializing in Table Tennis-first intake November, 2016 • ITTF Administration Course-2017 • Spins and Skills Coaching Videos expanded-2017 • DreamBuilding-Refugee Projects-Using table tennis as a vehicle for social change-2017 • ITTF High Performance Level 4 Coach Education-2018 • ITTF Table Tennis for All Manual-2019 • ITTF Coach Accreditation Scheme transferred to online modules with maximum 12 hours practical courses at each level-by 2020 • ITTFEducation.com Continued expansion throughout the quadrennial
