Dalt Vila and Ibiza Port: entertainment and culture Ibiza
I
biza Town is the capital and most-populous part of the island, with almost 50,000 inhabitants. Crowned by the medieval and walled Dalt Vila, which means ‘high town’ in the Ibizan language, it is the administrative center of the entire island. The historic heart of Sa Penya and La Marina and the city sprawl, which features more modern buildings and shopping avenues, combine with a large promenade along the seafront that connects the entire port area. The city’s concentration of commercial and cultural life, both in its historic and more modern areas, invites you to enjoy cultural walks, shopping, great cuisine, sidewalk cafés, and fun nightlife. There are also plenty of beaches where you can cool off, sunbathe or practice water sports, including Talamanca Bay, Ses Figueretes, and Platja d’en Bossa. 5

See & Do
A WALK THROUGH DALT VILA The walled city of Dalt Vila was named a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999. Its Renaissance walls, with their numerous bastions, are the best preserved in Europe and surround a historic city that retains traces of all the cultures that have passed through the island – from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Muslims, to the Catalan conquerors in the 13th century. A pleasant stroll through the cobblestone streets allows you to appreciate architecture of great beauty and simplicity that gives shape to ancient mansions, and civil and religious buildings, along with multiple museums where you can discover the island’s history and art. This cultural environment oscillates between the calm and tranquility of winter and the intensity of summer, when a wide variety of bars and restaurants serving up a huge range of cuisines swings into operation. Throughout the year, Dalt Vila hosts events such as the Medieval Fair, the Ibiza Jazz Festival, and the International Music Summit, as well as offering guided and dramatized tours that showcase its heritage.

LA MARINA NEIGHBORHOOD La Marina, Ibiza’s old fishing district, begins at the foot of the Renaissance walls and stretches all the way to the shore. Its narrow streets, full of history dating back to the 14th century, are dotted with stores, boutiques, bars, and restaurants that make this area the busiest and one of the liveliest on the island. Next to La Marina you find the Paseo de Vara de Rey and the Plaza del Parque, which feature vibrant terraces and a wide selection of stores, ranging from completely original offerings to luxury boutiques belonging to the biggest brands. PASEO JUAN CARLOS I AND TALAMANCA BAY The Paseo Juan Carlos I is known as Ibiza’s ‘golden mile’. Flanked by
high-rise buildings overlooking Dalt Vila and La Marina, it runs along the island’s two most exclusive marinas: Marina Ibiza and Botafoc Ibiza. Docked there are luxury yachts, sport boats, and rental boats, which are ideal for touring the Ibizan coast and neighboring Formentera. Both marinas are also home to the island’s most luxurious boutiques, featuring exclusive world-famous brands such as Gucci, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Dolce & Gabbana, among others. The Paseo Juan Carlos I leads to Talamanca Bay, a family beach where the seaside cuisine is a must-try. Another highlight of the area is the nightlife: the legendary Pacha nightclub is located here, as is the spectacular Cabaret Lío, which raises its curtain every night..

Ses Salines, a natural treasure Ibiza
S
es Salines Natural Park is an essential visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the extraordinary nature and biodiversity of Ibiza. The name derives from the salt flats here, which since ancient times have been a major source of wealth on the island and are still an important salt-producing center to this day. Located in the south of the island, the area also boasts three of Ibiza’s best beaches: the extensive sands of ses Salines and Es Cavallet and the coastline of Cap des Falcó, covered in unique rocks called còdols.

Ses Salines
See & Do
SES SALINES NATURAL PARK Ses Salines Natural Park covers 2,800 hectares of land and 13,000 hectares of seabed between Ibiza and Formentera. In fact, its Posidonia seabed connects the two Pityusic Islands and is a World Heritage Site. This place of infinite beauty is also known for its large bird populations. Among the more than 200 species that fly over the reserve are its iconic flamingos, whose majestic presence colors the flats white and pink, creating unique scenes. SES SALINES BEACH Ses Salines is one of the best-known and most-visited beaches in Ibiza. The reason? It is made up of a golden dune system and a long stretch of fine sand bathed by turquoise waters. Along the beach, you’ll find many restaurants with different atmospheres and styles that often offer sun loungers and sunshades. The more adventurous can practice sailbased water sports, while those
12
seeking tranquility can head to the intimate and exclusive small coves located in the direction of the Torre de Ses Portes. Near the beach is the village of Sa Canal, composed of small houses and warehouses built between the 19th and 20th centuries for the exploitation of the salt pans. In front of the village you find the salt dock where ships still moor to export salt to this day.
ES CAVALLET AND CAP DES FALCÓ The extensive sandy beach of Es Cavallet, with its blue waters and dunes colored by the green of the junipers, is one of Ibiza’s earthly paradises. It is a dream beach and although crowded, its long expanse of sand means you can always find the perfect spot. It is also the ideal place for snorkeling, since it has a sandy seabed and rocky areas beneath its clear waters. Just in front of Es Cavallet, after crossing
the ses Salines road and following the path next to the salt flats, you find Cap des Falcó. This unusual stretch of coastline is made up of unique stones known as còdols, which run along a path and join it with Es Codolar beach to the northwest. The Cap des Falcó mountain is an area of important ecological value for birds and a natural viewpoint from where you can appreciate the geometric and chromatic beauty of the salt flats.
TORRE DE SES PORTES Whether you start from ses Salines or Es Cavallet, one of the mostrecommended walks on the island is the one that leads to Torre de Ses Portes, which is located at an equidistant point from both beaches. Built in the 16th century, this defense tower owes its name to the three sea passages between Ibiza and Formentera, which are known as Es Freus. Palladium guides

he traditional dance of Ibiza, ball pagès recreates the courtship of a man inviting a woman to dance with a rattle of his castanets. The woman’s choreography, which is based on repeated circles and figures of eight, is performed with small steps, her head kept low and body close to his. Meanwhile, the man plays traditional musical instruments, while leaping around his partner. Throughout the dance, the couple never turn their backs to one another, and the man never takes his eyes off the woman. This traditional dance also served as an excuse for the dancers to show off their finest clothes. The men wore – and still wear today – white shirts and pants with a red sash, while the women’s dresses are authentic works of art composed of wide skirts, with sashes and lace. But the most striking adornments are the women’s jewels, known as emprendada. These majestic sets are made of gold, silver and coral, and traditionally represented social status.

Santa Eulària
See & Do
SANTA EULÀRIA TOWN The town of Santa Eulària stands out for its beautiful walking route along the river – which is low flowing, and the only one in the Balearic Islands – and its refreshing promenade full of bars and restaurants overlooking the beach. The town center is crowned by the beautiful 16th-century church of Puig de Missa, which stands atop a hill. On the way up, you can visit the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza, located in the Can Ros farmhouse, and dedicated to the island’s customs, traditions, and culture. AIGUA BLANCA Aigua Blanca is a beautiful sandy beach protected by cliffs, with clear turquoise, green, and blue waters. It offers a quiet and liberated atmosphere – naturism is permitted – and is ideal to enjoy in the morning, given that the cliffs cast a shadow across the sands on summer afternoons. To reach it, you have to walk down a 200-meter (650-foot) slope.
29
CALA NOVA AND CALA MASTELLA Flanked by two rocky outcrops and a pine forest that perfects its natural charm, Cala Nova has a peculiar scenic attraction. It has sandy and rocky areas, and a gently sloping seabed. Another of the beaches in the municipality is Cala Mastella, with fine white sands, a quiet atmosphere, and a wide range of water sports. S’ESTANYOL A few minutes from the village of Jesús is the beautiful stone beach of s’Estanyol, bordered by a pine forest. With crystal-clear waters and beach huts along its shores, it has a seabed that is perfect for snorkeling. CALA OLIVERA Within the Roca Llisa development, which is home to the island’s only golf course, lies the tiny, paradisiacal and little-frequented cove of Cala Olivera. You access it via the road that connects the village of Jesús with the area of Cala Llonga, and although there is a security checkpoint at the entrance to the development, the beach is open to all. T
he opening of Pacha Ibiza in July 1973 was the trigger that turned the island into a global reference point for partying. This first nightclub, located in a traditional Ibizan-style building, was later joined by Amnesia and Ku Club, now known as Privilege. At that time, the good atmosphere, which attracted bohemians from all over the world, developed in unrestricted, often outdoor spaces. The freedom of opening hours promoted endless parties, and led to the well-known after-hours spots that allowed visitors to hop non-stop from club to club all day, evening, and night. These were the times before the figure of the DJ had emerged, and promoters opted to push large-scale artistic
productions instead. Between the 1980s and 1990s, this saw the stages of the major nightclubs filled with well-known artists such as Spandau Ballet, whose 1981 performance at the old Ku Club marked a turning point for the island. However, the most famous live performance around that time was by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé, who also chose the Ku Club to perform their song Barcelona in 1987. The track would later become the official anthem of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The trend soon changed, however, and with the arrival of electronic music, the party scene in Ibiza began to pay homage to the best DJs in the world, who continue to reign over its eternal nights to this day.

long the coast of Ibiza you can find seven defense towers, located at strategic points. They date from between the 16th and 18th centuries, and their main purpose was to defend the island’s population against pirates. As such, they are all situated in high places, near beaches and coastal areas where enemy landings were possible. Visiting them all can make for a historical yet atypical tour. In the municipality of Sant Josep, you find the Torre d’en Rovira, between Platges de Comte and Cala Bassa, as well as the Torre des Savinar, in front of the islet of Es Vedrà. Ses Salines
Natural Park plays host to both the Torre de sa Sal Rossa, also known as the Torre des Carregador, in La Xanga, and the Torre de ses Portes. The aim of both was to defend the salt works and the nowdisappeared fishing village from possible looting. In the municipality of Sant Joan you find the Torre de Portinatx and the Torre des Molar, also known as the Torre de Balansat, located close to Port de Sant Miquel, which is located on a cliff with spectacular views. Finally, there’s the well-known Torre d’en Valls in Santa Eulària, located between the area of Pou des Lleó and Cala Boix, with the islet of Tagomago opposite.
